▼ [pt] O desenvolvimento infantil é um processo
maturacional, interativo e multidimensional, influenciado por
fatores ecobiodesenvolvimentais. Estudos demonstram a importância
construção do instrumento.
acompanhamento do desenvolvimento infantil e identificação
precoce.

aplicáveis no cenário brasileiro.
qualificações sustentáveis existentes no Brasil.
[en] The study of the main certifications, seals and
qualifications applied in Brazil and in the world reveals the
advantages of these certificates for buildings that seek to
encourage the practice of sustainability in the city of Rio de
Janeiro. Over the next two decades there has been an impasse
between developed countries and those who advocated environmental
preservation, since the former believed in capitalist economic
development only by changing raw materials. Finally, in the 1980s
the term sustainable development was created, whose definition
consisted in the defense of a development able to meet current
needs without harming the possibility of future generations to meet
their own needs. Due to this growing concern with the environment,
the construction sector needed to adapt to new requirements,
changing methods and creating means to control and supervise
sustainable practices, through environmental certificates such as
LEED, AQUA-HQE, Selo Casa Azul and Qualification
Qualiverde.

Embora

This project aims to develop a new tool for neuromuscular reeducation. Its function is to improve the quality and the duration of muscular strengthening training sessions and training of motor function for patients suffering from muscle deconditioning. A "smart" electromyostimulator using, at the same time, techniques of electrostimulation (EMS) and analysis of electromyography (EMG) allows the control in real time electrical stimulation parameters considering the physiological fatigue of the stimulated muscle. This control, performed on stimulation parameters depending on electrical response of muscles (M wave), allows the muscle stimulation taking into account the muscular reaction to the electrical stimulation

[en] Redis is an open source key-value database that
supports Lua programming language scripts, but it s implementation
is single threaded. Long running scripts are discouraged because
script evaluation is blocking, which may cause service levels
deterioration. Applying the M:N threading model, which combines
user and operating system threads, we added to Redis the ability of
running scripts in parallel, leveraging all server cores. With the
use of Lua coroutines, we implemented a scheduler able to allocate
and suspend user-level tasks in the available cores without the
need of changing scripts source code. The M:N model allowed us to
protect the programmer from the natural complexities that arise
from parallel programming, such as access to shared resources
synchronization and scheduling of tasks into different operational
system threads.

financeiros. O arcabouço teórico permitiu a definição de construtos
cognitivos e afetivos para a elaboração do modelo conceitual.
[en] This research aimed to investigate what factors
influence the adoption and use of technologies in services, more
specifically in the financial services sector. The theoretical
framework allowed the definition of cognitive and affective
constructs for the preparation of the conceptual model.
Furthermore, this model also includes constructs with high
relevance for consumption of financial services, like Trust and
Perceived Risk. Finally, the Technology Readiness construct,
developed by Parasuraman and Colby (2014), was added to the model
in order to analyze the influence of individual predisposition in
relation to technology in general, as an antecedent of the other
constructs. Data was collected via an online survey, which was
answered by 402 students or recent graduated of graduate and
post-graduate courses. The final model, named Model of Readiness
and Acceptance of Mobile Payments, indicated that the Readiness
Technology has stronger effects on cognitive aspects than on the
affective aspects, indicating that readiness significantly assists
the rational evaluation process about the use of technologies.

▼ Conflict is an inevitable feature of social relationships. When people interact, disagreements may arise. Especially in close relationships, people sometimes disagree. Although conflict might jeopardize relationships, conflict is not necessarily detrimental. The way conflicts are handled is important in determining whether conflicts are functional or dysfunctional. Moreover, the way conflicts are handled might reveal information about the nature of relationships and their developmental status. In the current dissertation, the role of conflict resolution in adolescents’ relationships with their parents and friends was investigated in four empirical studies. Data of 323 adolescents and their both parents –that participated in the longitudinal project called CONAMORE (CONflict And Management Of RElationships) – are used. In the first study, we demonstrated the importance of investigating combinations of conflict resolution styles by parents and adolescents. We found that adolescents who used an aggressive conflict resolution style with parents reported higher levels of delinquency, but only when their mothers also used this aggressive conflict resolution style or when their fathers withdrew from conflicts. In the second study, we showed that parents and adolescents change the way they handle conflicts with each other over time towards more positive conflict resolution and less negative conflict resolution, reflecting a realignment of these relationships towards greater egalitarianism. In addition, we found two types of parent-adolescent dyads, one characterized by positive conflict resolution and one characterized by negative conflict resolution by both parents and adolescents. These either positive or negative pathways of conflict resolution were maintained by both parents and adolescents. The third study examined whether transmission of conflict resolution styles from the marital relationship to the adolescent-parent relationship occurred and we indeed found that conflict resolution styles in the marital relationships predicted conflict resolution styles in the adolescent-parent relationship two years later. Finally, in our fourth study, we were able to investigate the daily dynamics of conflict and conflict resolution in adolescent relationships with parents and friends by means of a daily diary method. We demonstrated that perceived relationship satisfaction was highest in a particular relationship on days on which no conflict occurred, second highest on days on which constructive conflict occurred and lowest on days on which unconstructive conflict occurred. Moreover, we demonstrated that whereas unconstructively handled conflict with best friends was related to higher relationship satisfaction the next day, conflict with parents was not related to relationship satisfaction the next day.

empresas estrangeiras no mercado brasileiro.
relevantes.
[en] This dissertation collects data from 3,193
mergers and acquisitions that meet three conditions: the
transaction was completed between 1994 and 2016, the target company
is Brazilian and at least one of the companies involved is publicly
traded. The main contribution of the dissertation consists of
answers to five questions about the mergers and acquisitions market
in Brazil. i) the documented market multiple is high: median of
9.33 for the Company s Economic Value ratio over its EBITDA, while
in the same period the median of this multiple for all Brazilian
publicly traded companies is 6, 92; ii) 64 percent of the
transactions in the sample were horizontal, that is, they involved
buyers and sellers operating in the same industry; iii) in 51
percent of the transactions in the sample, foreign investors
acquired Brazilian companies; iv) loans subsidized by the Brazilian
government are present in 73 target companies from the 218 mergers
and acquisitions in the sample that involved exchange of control
and in 41 acquiring companies; and v) an increase of one percentage
point in real GDP increases the real financial volume involved in
mergers and acquisitions transactions by 14.7 percent. The data
suggest that the activity in the Brazilian merger and acquisition
market is motivated by a search for increase of market power or by
expanding the performance of foreign companies in the Brazilian
market. The presence of subsidized loans in the balance sheets of
the acquired companies indicates that financial motivations for the
transactions are also relevant.

▼ This commentary reflects on how indeterminacy has been used in the music I have written over the period of my doctoral studies, 2005-2008. Non-musical ideas play a major role in my compositional language and this is reflected in the use of 'strange attractors' as a metaphor for the philosophical and aesthetic stance behind composing with indeterminacy. After a brief introduction chapter, the links between strange attractors—and chaos theory in general—and indeterminate music are discussed. And applications of indeterminacy to pitch organisation techniques such as spectral modelling and frequency modulation are examined as part of a frequency-based harmonic continuum. Different methods of generating ambiguous pitch percepts that sit at the boundaries of the harmony/timbre duality are considered In pieces with text processes.

▼ This research advances the current state of knowledge in the field of early tape music both empirically and methodologically. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact that the electronic medium exerted in the musical thinking of Roberto Gerhard, one of the most outspoken, prolific and influential composers in the Spanish diaspora whose musical legacy, for the most part unknown, is a major landmark in the early history of electroacoustic music. Gerhard’s personal tape collection, one of the largest historical archives of its kind reported in the literature, is exceptional for both its antiquity (50+-year-old tapes) and its abundance of production materials. Through the digitisation and analysis of the composer’s tape collection this research argues that the empirical study of audio documents sets out a basis for a broader understanding of textual processes. More specifically, the research demonstrates that the reconstruction of works based on magnetic tape sketches is a powerful method to advance the understanding of early tape music. This research also examines Gerhard’s sound compositions in relation to the post-war context in which they were composed. Finally, this research presents performance documentation that proposes an approach to the electroacoustic music repertoire in which creativity is not at odds with rigor and critical discernment demonstrating that archival study can be closely aligned to the concept of re-enactment.

▼ This dissertation serves as a commentary to two recitals: a recital of chamber music which took place in July 2014, and a solo recital in June 2015. The first chapter looks at the definition of experimental music and its characteristics through the exploration of writings by composers and performers, considering the selection of repertoire that abides by these ideas, along with a brief look at performance practice. The second chapter serves as a performance commentary to the chamber works Why Patterns? by Morton Feldman and Flutist and Guitarist by Christian Wolff. The third chapter serves as a performance commentary to the works Headlong by Christopher Fox and 947 by Alvin Lucier. Both the second and third chapter examine the composer’s aesthetic concerns, along with recordings and writings around experimental music to inform the performance approach. Finally the conclusion looks at the significance of the experimental performer and how a performer may approach future works.

▼ Elicitation methods have been explored extensively in social science research, and in business contexts, to uncover unarticulated informant knowledge. This qualitative study investigates the use of an audiovisual elicitation interviewing technique, developed by a UKbased creative multimedia production social enterprise; Fifth Planet Productions CIC. The
method employs a system of using audiovisual stimulus to elicit participant responses in the interview setting. This study, conducted in two parts, explores how the method improves solutions for eliciting client requirements. Part 1 explores the audiovisual elicitation interview within the business setting; how the techniques are effective at revealing tacit
knowledge that would ordinarily remain unspoken in the standard interview. Part 2 tests the developed methods on a sample of 25 business owners seeking to improve communication within their respective organisations. This evidences how it is possible to elicit rich information that can be interpreted to determine clients’ requirements on professional
commissions.
The study presents a working method of audiovisual elicitation that is regularly employed by Fifth Planet Productions CIC. The methods are used to elicit project requirements in professional commissions and to establish stronger client relationships

▼ The following commentary details aspects of my recent compositions attempting to bring about
intersections between subjects and objects. I demonstrate how my compositions highlight an
interplay between the poles of subjectivity vs objectivity, human vs nonhuman and nature vs
culture. Various musical precedents rooted in objectivity form the basis of this endeavour,
such as the inaudible cosmic vibrations proposed by the Pythagoreans' Musica universalis, the chance procedures of mid twentieth-century experimental music, and the Platonic forms of Tom Johnson. However, although these standpoints do attempt to broaden the scope of music beyond the human sphere, they remain most often framed by transcendent discourse without explicitly addressing the subjective implications of such work.
I propose an approach to composition that distances itself from a transcendental perspective, instead choosing to highlight the effects that objectivity elicits in human beings, while maintaining the presence of an external reality that remains inscrutable. Thus, my portfolio addresses the precise ways in which subjectivity remains present even within an objective musical discourse, whether through exploring psychological responses to chance, the existential boredom brought on by unchanging forms, subjective reactions to the objectication of the human body, and the input of the imagination in the face of withdrawn or speculative musical objects.

▼ The purpose of this study is to find out the limitations of style and genre fusion. It asks how effectively can a composer achieve this This thesis explores the restrictions of the ideas of style and genre fusion by examining if one genre will overpower the other in terms of its sonic signature and social ideals or if a balanced fusion can be achieved? Another question of interest, is how far apart can two fusions by the same composer of the same two genres stylistically be from one another? The study consists of a portfolio of compositions that explore the subject and his accompanying thesis will discuss the research that informed them as well as some discussion of the compositions themselves.

▼ Music and visuals have coexisted together in film for years, with millions of viewers and listeners attending film showings in a way of escaping their normal lives. This aim of escapism gives the viewer a chance to surround themselves in another world, apart from their own, and in doing so they can become immersed. To allow themselves the act of disbelief for a short period in order to find enjoyment and experience enhanced emotional involvement, where this could not be possible in day to day life. So what makes this combination of visuals and sound so appealing to the masses? What is it about the relationship between these two medias that culminates to create something truly captivating? When music and film connect in a perfect way it can make a masterpiece of audio-visual content, though there is a lot at play to make this happen. This dissertation delves into what it is that makes film so immersive to its audience, discovering multiple ways of composing music to film and how using similar formulas to those used in successful film, similar results can be yielded in terms of the ability to become immersed. However, an individual's personal opinion and experience can often be the deciding factor in that person becoming immersed. With this in mind this dissertation investigates the role of subjectivity in conjunction with immersion and film, exploring how subjectivity can affect how immersive a film can be to the viewer.
The following films are analysed in detail: Birdman , dir. by Alejandro G. Iñárritu (Fox Searchlight Pictures, 2014), Fight Club , dir. by David Fincher (20th Century Fox, 1999), and Inception , dir. by Christopher Nolan (Warner Bros. Pictures, 2010). These three films have been chosen for analysis because they share similar narrative themes, that being the idea that the mind can influence the world, and in some cases create new worlds. These three films show their main characters interacting with parts of their mind, and in some cases being transported into their own minds.

▼ The submitted portfolio and accompanying thesis focus on the subject of doubles and duplication and their application as musical materials and compositional devices in my own work and, to a lesser extent, throughout the history of music and other artistic disciplines. In this study I look at the acoustic, structural, perceptual and aesthetic implications derived from the duplication of sonic materials, instruments, objects, setups, gestures and performers.
From a general perspective, the use of duplication raises a number of issues of identical sounds by two or more sonic sources, the importance of synchronicity or asynchronicity in the suggestion of aural and visual analogies, the role of distance in the establishment of auditory correspondences, the degree of similarity required by specific materials to be identified as doubles, the role of the performer in creating a sense of gestural and performative duplication, the relationship between acoustic and acousmatic sources in the delineation of sonic parallels, etc.
In this thesis, the subject of duplication is chiefly regarded from spatial, performative and sonic perspectives. The sections focusing on spatial issues examine the function of duplicated setups of objects and instruments in the space of performance. The analysis of performative elements addresses the role of gestural duplication and doppelgangers as musical and scenic resources. Finally, the sections on sound investigate the perceptual and aesthetic effects of duplicated sonic sources, echoic interactions and sonic displacements. This thesis is structured into two main parts. The first part (chapters 1 & 2) examines the different possible categories and models of duplication and their usage throughout music history. The second part (chapters 3 & 4) focuses on the application and different roles of duplication in my own music.
The issue of duplication has been explored in the works composed throughout the research process. A total of six pieces (approximately 105 minutes of music) have been written over the course of this PhD. The issues present in these compositions have been thoroughly examined in my thesis, becoming the main object of study. Each of these works approaches duplication in a different manner, highlighting the versatility and potential compositional applications of this phenomenon.

▼ Diverging explanations of local multiparametric schemata are found in music of the common practice period (c. 1600–c. 1900). Associative statistical theories describe schemata as situated structures in particular times and places, whereas generative theories present these constructions as features formed through stability in universal and general rule systems. Associative-statistical theories of schemata elucidate the culturally conditioned relationships between features (distinctive attributes commonly used in grammars and schemata), but do not show the influence of universal psychological constraints; generative theories reveal the implicit structure of music, but do not formalise particular grammatical features and contexts. A synthesis of generative and associative-statistical approaches is necessary to model the interaction between universal and particular constraints of grammars and schemata. This dissertation focuses on a novel localised schema formed in the Classical instrumental grammar, termed the butterfly schema. It is posited that the butterfly schema is generated by a tendency for congruence that is manifest in and between the particular features of this grammar.
Computational musicology and psychology provide interdisciplinary insight on the formal possibilities and limitations of grammatical structure. Computational models of schemata and grammars show how the congruent features of musical structure can be represented and formalised. However, they also highlight the difficulties found in the automatic analyses of multiparametric relationships, and may be limited on account of their inductive frameworks. Psychological approaches are important for establishing universal laws of cognition, but are limited in their potential to account for the diversity of musical structuring in grammars. The synthesis of associative-statistical and generative approaches in the present dissertation permits modelling the combination of the universal and particular attributes of butterfly schemata. Butterfly schemata are dependent on the particular grammars of periods of history, but are constrained by the tendency for congruence, which is proposed to be a cognitive universal. The features of the butterfly schema and the Classical instrumental grammar are examined and compared against the features of the Baroque and Romantic grammars, showing how they are formed from diverse types of congruent structuring. The butterfly schema is a congruent grammatical category of the Classical instrumental grammar that comprises: chords that are close to the tonic in pitch space (with a chiastic tension curve starting and ending on the tonic); a textural and metrical structure that is regular and forms a regular duple hierarchy at the level of regular functional harmonic change and at two immediately higher levels; and simple harmonic-rhythm ratios (1:1 and 3:1).
A survey conducted using arbitrary corpora in European instrumental music, c. 1750–c.1850, shows the distribution of butterfly schemata. Butterfly schemata are more common…

▼ This thesis examines the activity of the British musicians developing a practice of freely improvised music in the mid- to late-1960s, in conjunction with that of a group of British composers and performers contemporaneously exploring experimental possibilities within composed music; it investigates how these practices overlapped and interpenetrated for a period. The thesis identifies those characteristics of improvisation and experimentalism which favour a relationship between the two fields, but which ultimately underline the different expectations and objectives underlying each activity.
The historical material is explored through a combination of archive research and interviews with musicians who were actively involved in the developments under examination. In addition the author draws upon his extensive personal experience as an improvising musician and composer, and as a performing associate of several of the key improvising musicians of the period.
The first section of the thesis identifies the historical and social background, outlining the two key groups of participants working in the unmapped area between existing idiomatic improvisation and experimental composition practice, including brief studies of important figures who initiated or facilitated the exploration of shared activity during the period.
A second section seeks to introduce further precision into discussion of improvised music by seeking to clarify the definition of taxonomic terms currently in use, and to extend these by identifying key characteristics of the wide range of approaches to playing improvised music.
Section three explores the practical implications of the differing objectives of improvising musicians and composers. A series of archive case studies examining composing for improvising musicians during the 1960s and 1970s are discussed, along with an investigation of issues raised by the restoration of Derek Bailey’s Ping (prob. 1967/8) for contemporary performance by improvising musicians.
The final section identifies fundamental differences of aspiration and approach within improvisation and composition, and examines the consequent implications for joint practice. It establishes why such differences are inevitable, and the insights they provide into the nature of artistic practice.

▼ This thesis examines the life, works and music of Joe Morley, who was one of the most wellknown
and respected players of the banjo, and one of its foremost composers. His life coincided with the last embodiments of the Minstrel troupes, and importantly, with the beginnings of the Pierrot tradition. His career covered the beginnings of the banjo in popular entertainment, through its decline after the Great War, and its resurgence in Concert parties with the advent of the wireless.
The primary aim of this research is to place Morley, his family and his associates within a
clearly defined and accurate historical framework. This has not been achieved before, and
represents a step forward in understanding the music of popular entertainment during his
musical career.
Much of what has been written about Morley was written about the time of his death in 1937,
and in banjo orientated magazines. None of these authors had any information about his
family or his early life, and their accounts are either incomplete or incorrect, and dependent
upon oral tradition.
Morley’s music offers an insight into the changing tastes in popular music from Minstrels, to Pierrots, and finally to the Concert party. This in-depth examination also throws light on
many of the personalities with whom Morley was associated, some well known figures, and some who have now retreated into obscurity.

▼ The aim of this research project is to challenge my practice as a popular music songwriter and producer. To achieve this, I have developed a theoretically informed dance/movement paradigm to shape sound and provoke alternative production methodologies within my compositional practice. My work questions how concepts from Modern Architecture, The Bauhaus, Laban Movement Theory, Dance Movement Therapy and the psychology of movement can be coherently integrated into my technologically-mediated creative practice.
Inspired by Laban Movement Theory, I have created The Tesseract. This is the culmination of research investigating how I can create a compositional system that enables the mapping of my body’s movement to parametric control in custom audio effects and what are the performative and psychological implications I encounter arising from this system. The Tesseract allows me to integrate my intuitive physical movement and embodied cognition to create an interactive and dynamic means of sculpting sound in space. The Tesseract provides me with a compositionalkinaesthetic feedback tool that provides an auto-ethnographic reflection on my long established compositional methods and how these have changed as a result of this research. The tactility and physicality of controlling sound through movement offers a fundamentally different experience of working in a studio: one in which the perception of what is occurring sonically at any given moment can be immediately reconfigured through movement projection.
Ultimately, this research project facilitates the integration of The Tesseract as a theoretically informed way to shape sound through movement and a technologically mediated means for mindfulness. Through creating works in this way, I investigate connections between Dance Movement Therapy and psychotherapy as it relates to embodied cognition, memory, and trauma.

▼ Re-inventing Harmony in Electroacoustic Music reflects on research regarding structuring pitch-based material in my music written between 1999 and 2010. The selected works illustrates the process leading up to my research based on psychoacoustic consonance and dissonance and my strategies to create a new kind of harmony – a harmony based on concrete sounds with inharmonic spectra.
The discussion will refer to pieces by composers who have worked with harmony based on the analysis of sound spectra; instrumental and mixed works by spectralist composers such as Grisey, Murail and Saariaho and electroacoustic works by Harvey and others.
I will address the importance of research in the psychoacoustic field, in particular, research by
William A. Sethares regarding inharmonic spectra and scales and how it has affected my works.

▼ This thesis discusses my engagement with and investigation into the aesthetic and expressive possibilities of instrumental mechanism and performerinstrument physicality, while proposing an aesthetic frame inside of which purely physical events or objects can be contextualized. The relationship between the performer and their instrument is discussed at length and reimagined as being highly mediative in nature; the body and the instrument existing as autonomous operators comprising a larger machine within which they mutually exert an influence over the other. The exact points of contact between the body and the instrument are examined as if through a microscope
– extremely small, precise spaces inside of which catastrophically violent physical phenomena take place. The activity within these spaces is understood as being responsible for the quality and texture of a sound, and is the point in
the process of generating sound where physical, corporeal, palpable friction is transmuted into a more ephemeral aural phenomenon. The remainder of the thesis relates the information to purely musical matters, and discusses how approaching the compositional act through mechanism and physicality has led to a reversal in the hierarchy between form and content. Form and other parameters such as rhythm and meter are now issued from the organization of raw materials, rather than being de facto constructs that were generated apart from and before things like sound and physicality were considered. In the conclusion, I propose that, as a direct consequence of my research into mechanism and physicality, the roles of and the relationships between the score, performer and listener have fundamentally altered such that their confrontation with each other is the terminal, necessary factor in the piece’s becoming of itself. Throughout the essay, I contextualize the ideas through their manifestation in my pieces The Restoration of Objects, Apparatus and One Flat Thing, reproduced.

▼ This thesis discusses contradictory foreground-background relationships within my MPhil portfolio of compositions. Part I elaborates a constellation of concepts. Foreground organization is considered as “character,” the treatment of musical material as if it is a living subject, while background organization is approached as “ground,” a frame which mediates and is mediated by character. The contradiction
between these levels is examined as a directed, multileveled syntax. The discussions are contextualized with examples from nineteenth- and late twentieth-century music as well as from philosophy, cultural theory, and non-musical art-forms. Part II discusses how specific techniques have actualized these concepts, focusing upon issues of behavior, shape, and stratification. In the conclusion, I analyze how an aesthetic of contradiction redefines relationships between sound and meaning.

▼ The aim of the research is to build a suite of software tools that use a unique combination of techniques to generate specific audio material. Emphasis will be put on the methods used to create the desired sounds, how to achieve sophisticated control over relevant parameters quickly and easily, and how to provide functionality that cannot be replicated with existing software. The driving force behind the creation of each piece of software is the type of sound created and how this can be used within my own compositions. The development of application will begin with a specific sound or compositional method in mind, which will be worked towards through a process of refining various audio and
control processes. I have become increasingly interested in drone music and two of the three applications will be ideally suited to creating audio material for this genre. The final application stems from my interest in the cut up style compositions of Akufen and is designed to simplify the creation of samples in this
style.
An important part of the research is the development of the graphical user interfaces for each piece of software. I want to create not just Max/MSP patches, but standalone applications that I find enjoyable and easy to use. I feel it is
important to have continuity throughout the suite and will demonstrate this by using a similar design aesthetic in each application. Through my research of other applications created in Max, I recognise that the design of the user interface has a large impact on whether I enjoy using the software. With this in mind I intend to organise the interfaces in a logical way, and to keep them as clear as possible.
Another main research aim is using the computer to cut down the time it takes to achieve my compositional goals. Through actively using the applications as they are being developed, I will be able to identify areas that I can refine, which will save time when composing. One area I will investigate is the application of random number procedures and how they can be used to provide interesting variation of the sound within bounded parameters. Each of the final applications
will demonstrate their role in my compositional process.
I will use Max/MSP as the development environment as I have had extensive experience with it during my undergraduate degree, and also for independent
projects. As a prototyping environment it has an advantage over traditional code based programming because any changes are instantly usable, giving the environment a ‘live’ feel. The diagrammatical nature of the patching window also lends itself to experimentation and quick changes, which are not as feasible in text based programming languages. When working towards a specific sound, this ease of experimentation is a vital characteristic of the software and will
undoubtedly save time during the development process.

▼ This practice-based research project will examine the link between the contemporary genre of Musique Concrète and the visual medium, through a portfolio of audiovisual pieces. By undertaking in-depth research into audiovisual principles demonstrated by Michel Chion and Walter Murch, I will first outline the various relationships that audio has with vision, and viceversa, drawing on ideas from theorists like Denis Smalley, Rick Altman and Paul Rudy. Then, by subsequently analysing the definitions and interpretations of Musique Concrète by musicologists such as Pierre Schaeffer and Pierre Henry, I will look at the issues and debates surrounding acousmatic sounds, as well as the way the listening audience receives and perceives sound. Finally, I will amalgamate these ideas and concepts into a theoretical framework, and strive to answer the question of how Musique Concrète could potentially
manifest itself visually. As vision is generally seen as the most dominant of the senses1, the
importance of having aesthetic compatibility between the audio and visual elements of a piece
of work is imperative. Therefore, study into this area will help to develop a specific integrated
framework for effectively analysing or creating audiovisual work involving concrete music.
Drawing inspiration from various video artists such as Rob Chiu and Chris Cunningham, the portfolio comprises three audiovisual pieces, each with the common goal of demonstrating
a marriage of concrete music and its accompanying visual stimuli. However, each piece explores a different approach to achieving its unified objective, by adopting various methods of
realisation through utilising an assortment of visual production techniques, based on conceptualising the creative process. This will be accomplished by looking at the schematisation of Musique Concrète, and the parallels that run between its concrete to abstract compositional process and that of video editing. Interpreting these concepts visually will help to develop the foundation for an enhanced, sympathetic audiovisual relationship. The soundtrack
will also be extrapolated into varying degrees of abstracted syntax, as well as explored for aural
and mimetic discourse, revealing how it evokes imagery and metaphoric messages through
environmental context, and the impact this has on the video.
The popular culture element of the research project will look to consolidate these ideas of a
concrete sound and video hybrid, and present it in a modern-day popular context. By studying
modern Musique Concrète artists such as Matthew Herbert, whose seamless blend of Jazz and
concrete samples produces a unique and popular soundworld, to more traditional artists like
Michel Chion, Pierre Henry and Luc Ferrari, the portfolio accompanying this project will consist
of sounds from everyday objects, integrated with samples of electric guitar and bass, and manipulated through the use of software plug-ins and granular synthesis. The result is an
industrial soundworld contextualised within various genres…

▼ The two aims of this thesis are the theoretical understanding, and the practical exploration, of the issues faced by Western art music composers when they engage with musical sources from Non-Western cultures. The first volume is a dissertation dedicated to the first aim of theoretical understanding. In it I have sought to chart the historical development of cross-cultural engagement by examining the writings and works of certain Western composers. By doing this I have endeavoured to understand how Non-Western influences manifest themselves in a composers work, and, with reference to writings in contemporary ethnomusicology, to create a model for the categorising of approaches to cross-cultural composition.
I have also explained why I believe such engagement with Non-Western influences to be both fascinating and important for contemporary Western composers and indeed Western society as a whole, although I have also discussed the problems, ethical, aesthetic and practical, encountered in the process. These problems have prompted a range of creative solutions and to illustrate certain devices I have presented a variety of score examples.
The second volume consists of materials related to my composition ‘Prelude and Meditation,’ which was written for the Okeanos ensemble whose workshops I attended and participated in. The project provided me with an opportunity to conduct my own engagement with Non-Western music, which I have discussed at length in the dissertation. The second volume includes the original score, a recording of the piece by the Okeanos ensemble and a partially amended score, which was produced after the performance as a revision of material that I felt could be improved upon.
It is my hope that the two volumes combined will represent a useful and interesting contribution to the study and appreciation of the growing relationship between Western and Non-Western musical cultures.

▼ There is nothing intrinsically musical about a laptop computer, but there has in the past two decades been a rise in popularity of using portable computers to perform music. Computers powerful enough to create music were once exclusive to Universities and music studios. Now computers are as accessible to people as traditional instruments and have fully opened the world of electronic music to the non-musician through the use of graphic interfaces.
This commentary will discuss the relationship between instrumentality and the performance and
composition of electronic music by examining traditional methods of instrumental performance and the relatively modern idea of performing live with a laptop computer. The issue of imperfection will be discussed and how certain ‘errors’ have become widely acceptable even to the point where
whole genres have arisen entirely from their creation. I will look at the way glitch music began as a genre entirely reliant on the computer for its creation into one that has embraced traditional instrumentation and the idea of performance.
There will be a comparison of the compositional styles of Alva Noto's earlier solo work and his
more recent collaborations, in particular with the Ensemble Modern and the formally trained pianist and composer Ryuichi Sakamoto. The aim of this is to examine whether the inclusion of
instruments or notions of instrumentality in the compositional process has in some way changed
Alva Noto’s approach to composing from a visually led (cymatic) process to one that is more
sonically led. This comparison is used as a case study to inform my own work as some works in the
portfolio set out deliberately to explore traditional instrumental playing techniques, whereas others deal with virtuosity within the software environment of Ableton Live.
