▼ There are high rates of inactivity in UK adults, which can lead to a range of health problems. The main aims of this thesis were: first to review existing behaviour change intervention design, delivery, evaluation, and reporting frameworks to gauge the most effective process and/or combination; second to review the existing literature on physical activity and sedentary behaviour interventions, to see whether they work, what techniques might be effective, and how well they were reported; third to review theories of behaviour (change) in terms of completeness and suitability for physical activity and sedentary behaviour; fourth to test the chosen theory (COM-B model) in terms of the relevant components of the three constructs (Capability, Opportunity, Motivation) and how well they predicted moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and sedentary behaviour (in comparison to the Theory of Planned Behaviour); last to design, implement, and evaluate (including from the deliverers' perspective) a community physical activity programme, with the techniques highlighted in the review included in the content and the behavioural drivers from the theory analysis as secondary outcomes. The exploration of behaviour change intervention design frameworks concluded by summarising a nine-step process covering the most important elements from needs assessment to dissemination. The systematic review showed physical activity interventions to be effective at changing behaviour and maintaining those changes, and pointed towards behaviour change techniques that were associated with effectiveness. The theory review concluded that the COM-B contained the most comprehensive range of behavioural determinants and was ideally situated within the Behaviour Change Wheel for designing interventions. The COM-B analysis showed a strong prediction of MVPA and highlighted Psychological Capability and Reflective Motivation as important drivers. Sedentary behaviour was also predicted relatively strongly with Psychological Capability the most important driver. The Active Herts programme was then detailed and evaluated, showing improvements in physical activity, health, life satisfaction, and wellbeing at 3 and 6 months. COM-B measures predicted MVPA more strongly after intervention at 3 and 6 months, than at baseline, and were better at predicting MVPA performance than change over this period. Interviews with the Get Active Specialists delivering the programme reflected positively on the training, materials, and overall programme. Key lessons to take forward were extra support at the start with supervision and engaging referrers, and limiting the length and complexity of outcomes measures. The discussion explored the need to measure long-term outcomes of behaviour change, difficulties in measuring the constructs of the COM-B, the balance between standardisation and tailoring of interventions, and adopting a transdisciplinary approach to programme design.

▼ The first part of the report reads up on food waste and makes account for how to reduce food waste in households by documenting it. The goal of this project is to examine how a measure of method consisting of voice commands is working as compared to a classic method of measurement with paper and pen. Food waste is a big issue and to decrease food waste, it is important to document this waste in several ways. Since food waste can include different kinds of food depending on how it’s phrased, the concept of food waste is described as both food that could have been eaten but also food that could not be eaten. In studies of food waste, taking notes is a common method of measurement – but it has couple of flaws. In example subjects often forget to take notes when this is required. In this study we are investigating how voice control could be a new alternative to log food waste. The problem statement is based on whether households find easier to log something with the help of voice commands rather than writing it down with paper and pen. We have built a system that will be tested on five subjects. The subjects of the study will use voice commands with a Google Home Mini. In this study they will use voice commands while documenting food waste in each subject’s household, this will be going on in single households. To analyse the data there will be a trashcan prototype created which counts each time something is thrown in the bin. With the help of the counter there will be a possibility to examine if more food waste is thrown than being logged. Furthermore, every interaction with the voice control that is related to food waste will be saved in a spreadsheet. In the method section, an analysis of how the five subjects will be tested is done. The first week the subjects will log food waste by voice commands and will only be using the prototype that was created as the designated food waste bin. The second week, subjects will log on to paper and pen instead. Finally, the prototypes are collected to analyse the data on the microcontroller as well as the logged data collected in a spreadsheet. Qualitative data is gathered through a survey. The result indicated that the majority preferred voice control as a measurement method once it worked, deficiencies such as communication problems were a major reason why this method was not the most optimal. One subject preferred the measurement method with paper and pen over voice control. Several test subjects thought it was difficult to keep track of paper and pencil but appreciated that it was a safe method of measurement in which they could see what was on the paper. This study is of interest to systems where voice control is used in, for example smart homes but also a contribution to the development of measurement methods. One conclusion in the study is that voice control is a possible measurement method but that more studies are needed in the subject.

▼ In the last decade there has been a rise in the availability of consumer focused physical activity and fitness tracking devices. Recently there has been interest in using these devices from the research community for data collection and as part of health behavior interventions. With millions of adults using activity trackers it is necessary to develop an understanding of how they are used, and to what extent different factors may affect physical activity outcomes. The current study sought to explore the relationship between behavior change techniques (BCTs) used by long-term users of Fitbit activity tracking devices and change in physical activity over time. In-depth interviews were conducted with participants in order to obtain information about behavior change techniques connected to the use of the Fitbit system. Historical Fitbit data (steps and activity intensity) were also collected. Thirty participants were recruited to take part in the study. Based on coding of the in-depth interviews, individuals who are long-term users of physical activity tracking devices were found to use a variety of techniques associated with their engagement with the devices and it’s connected applications. On average participants took 9,695 steps (SD = 5,309) and participated in 33.90 minutes of MVPA (SD = 42.90) per day. An exploration of the relationship between technique use and physical activity outcomes using multi-level modeling indicated that there was limited support for the relationship between use of techniques included in the design the Fitbit system and positive change in physical activity over time. No support was found for a positive relationship between the use of additional BCTs not included in the design of the Fitbit system and physical activity outcomes. Additional qualitative analysis demonstrated that individuals think about and use the same techniques in different ways and apply them in different contexts. This exploratory study is the first examination of BCT use by individuals who freely choose to use physical activity tracking devices, and provided a proof of concept for a systematic mixed methods approach. Results of the study highlight the importance of understanding context of behavior change technique use in relation to physical activity behavior change.

„Demonstrate behavior“ (n=13), „instruction on how to perform the behavior“ (n=11), „Information provision (to the individual)“ (n=8), Information provisions (general) (n=8), „plan social support“ (n=7), „sucessful behavior-contingent rewards“ (n=7) und „goal setting“ (n=7) zählten zu den am häufigsten vorkommenden BCTs.
Numerous people ruin their health by poor nutrition and too little physical activity. However, especially these two factors, namely a healthy diet and sports, are extremely crucial to maintain a healthy lifestyle. For a couple of years now, scientists have begun to use smartphones as a platform for the mediation of health and fitness. The designed mobile applications have a huge potential to contribute to the improvement of the health and fitness of people. Nevertheless, only few studies about this subject matter have been published.
Methods: „Top ranked“ apps (n=20) were downloaded from the Apple App Store in the category health and fitness on December 13, 2016 and were evaluated with the (CALO-RE) taxonomy by Hagger, Keatley & Chan (2014) during the next weeks. The completion of the analysis was done in January 2017.
Results: The mobile applications included an average of 6,6 BCTs (range: 2 – 15). There is a difference between the free apps, including an average of 7,4 (range: 2 – 11) and the paid apps, including an average of 5,4 BCTs (range: 3 – 15). The most common techniques involved „demonstrate behavior“ (n=13), „instruction on how to perform the behavior“ (n=11), „information provision (to the individual)“ (n=8),…

▼ This study used a qualitative approach to explore sustainability communication techniques in Jordan. To ground the research, I used the Jordan Green Building Council (JoGBC) as a case study, conducting semi-structured interviews with JoGBC’s planners and decision makers based on the following questions: how do the proponents and planners of JoGBC, as a (NGO), communicate the nature and importance of sustainable urban development to the residents of Jordan? How do these communication practices compare to other techniques shown to be effective elsewhere? The findings suggest that overall, JoGBC used a variety of communication techniques in their communication for sustainability, and these communications were also consistent with the communication techniques used in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Although the techniques used by JoGBC were created elsewhere, financial constraints were a key barrier for choosing and adopting sustainability communication by JoGBC. This study provides recommendations to improve JoGBC sustainability communications techniques, as well as sustainability communication techniques in Jordan in general.

▼ Prolonged sedentary behaviour (SB) poses health risks independent of physical activity (PA) levels (Owen et al., 2010). University students in particular are at risk of engaging in prolonged SB due to the demands of school. Due to the pervasiveness of smartphones, and ability of mobile applications (apps) to target SB (Bond et al., 2014), apps may be used to encourage less SB in this population. Apps for PA have been coded for behaviour change techniques (BCTs) (Conroy et al., 2014; Middelweerd et al., 2014; Yang et al., 2015), however, apps for SB have yet to be assessed for BCTs.
The purpose of this study was two-fold. The first aim was review smartphone apps designed to reduce SB for the presence of BCTs. The second aim was to gain an understanding of university students’ SB, PA and experiences with apps, and trial an SB app as a pilot intervention in this population.
To address the first aim, systematic searches of the iTunes App and Google Play stores were completed using keyword searches. Two reviewers independently coded free (n=36) and paid (n=14) app descriptions using a taxonomy of 93 BCTs (Michie et al., 2012). A subsample (n=4) of free apps were trialed for one week by the reviewers and coded for the presence of BCTs. In the free and paid app descriptions, only 10 of 93 BCTs were present with a mean of 2.42 BCTs (range 0-6) per app. The BCTs coded most frequently were “prompts/cues” (n=43), “information about health consequences” (n=31), and “self-monitoring of behaviour” (n=17). For the four free apps that were trialed, three additional BCTs were coded that were not coded in the descriptions: “graded tasks”, “focus on past successes”, and “behaviour substitution”. These SB apps have fewer BCTs compared to PA apps(Conroy et al., 2014; Middelweerd et al., 2014; Yang et al., 2015) and traditional (i.e., non-app) PA and healthy eating interventions (Michie et al., 2009).
To address the second aim, students from WLU (n=177) completed an online survey of questions about self-report levels of PA, SB, and experiences with and perceptions of apps. Following this, participants were asked to participate in a follow-up study and were randomly assigned to a trial group (n=53) or a control group (n=74). The trial group was asked to use the app Rise & Recharge® for two weeks. After two weeks, participants in trial (n=18) and control groups (n=37) completed a second online survey that repeated the self-report PA and SB questions. Participants in the trial group also responded to additional questions about their app experience. A two-way mixed repeated measures ANOVA found no significant difference in PA in either group from ‘time 1’ to ‘time 2’ (p>0.05). However, another two-way mixed repeated measures ANOVA for SB determined there was no main effect of time or group (p>0.05), but a significant interaction between group and time (F(1,33)=6.81, p=0.014, ηp2= 0.171), in which the trial group (n=11) decreased in SB from ‘time 1’ to ‘time 2’, whereas the control group (n=24) increased in ‘time 1’ to ‘time…

▼ Australian physiotherapists promote non-treatment physical activity, which is physical activity used to improve or maintain general health, to patients with musculoskeletal conditions. However, it is unclear how physiotherapists promote non-treatment physical activity and the behaviour change techniques they use to do this. This thesis used four studies to: (i) review the efficacy of physiotherapist-led physical activity interventions; (ii) investigate the factors that influence physiotherapists’ choice to promote non-treatment physical activity; and (iii) identify the behaviour change techniques that private practice and outpatient physiotherapists use to promote non-treatment physical activity. Two systematic reviews identified that physiotherapist-led physical activity interventions are efficacious. However, effects were small and not maintained. Additionally, physiotherapists only used a small number of behaviour change techniques when promoting physical activity. National survey and interview studies were used to identify the factors that influence physiotherapists’ choice to promote non-treatment physical activity. The survey found that having poor knowledge of how to promote non-treatment physical activity, prioritising other patient problems before non-treatment physical activity and using promotion methods that were not compatible with daily practice significantly and independently reduced the odds of physiotherapists promoting non-treatment physical activity. Interpretative phenomenological analysis was used to design interviews that showed that having a perceived inability to motivate an unmotivated patient and believing that patients expect hands-on therapy instead of non-treatment physical activity promotion complicated treatment choices. The behaviour change techniques Australian physiotherapists used to promote non-treatment physical activity were compared to those used to encourage adherence to rehabilitation exercises in the survey too. The survey found that physiotherapists used similar behaviour change techniques to promote non-treatment physical activity and encourage adherence to rehabilitation exercises. This thesis provides clinicians and researchers with an understanding of the factors that influence Australian physiotherapists’ decision to promote non-treatment physical activity and the behaviour change techniques they use.

The climate debate has recently become one of the most discussed and important topics. If the Paris Agreement's goal of keeping the increase in global temperature below 2 degrees, the reduction of greenhouse gas emission is vital. There are several ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and one of the ways is throughout a reduced food waste. This is also a topic that the UN has taken notice of among its 17 sustainable development goals set by 2030. At present, an unsustainable amount of food is thrown away, and one of the reasons is because of forgotten food boxes whose content has had to be thrown away because the expiration date has passed. This study will investigate if it is possible, with an intervention designed based on The Behavior Change Wheel framework, to encourages a behavior for a reduced food waste. The intervention will consist of a scanning system for food boxes, whose purpose is to help its user to keep track of their food boxes. Six participants were recruited to the study based on a questionnaire and got to test the scanning system for a two-week period. The result would indicate that the system worked as intended for some of the participants, but not for some others. This was not due to the system itself, but instead to what extent the participant had used food boxes.

▼ Background: In Canada, only 15% of adults meet the physical activity guidelines (Colley et al., 2011). As regular physical activity has been demonstrated to substantially improve physical and mental health (Naci & Ioannidis, 2013; Schuch et al., 2016), a wealth of physical activity promoting interventions have been developed and evaluated (Kahn et al., 2002; Prince et al., 2014). Physical Activity Counselling (PAC) is one of these and has been shown effective in increasing physical activity motivation and behaviour (Fortier et al., 2011). However, the active ingredients of PAC have never been reported in detail, thus limiting our potential for understanding its effectiveness and to allow for its replication. Recently, taxonomies have been published for characterizing behaviour change techniques (BCTs) and Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques in interventions (Hardcastle et al., 2017; Michie et al., 2013). Due to its novelty, no studies to date have used the MI technique taxonomy to report interventions.
Purpose: To investigate the behaviour change techniques (BCTs) and Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques applied in PAC sessions delivered by student-counsellors.
Methods: PAC 1 and PAC 2 sessions delivered by 11 student-counsellors were double coded for identification of BCTs and MI techniques, for a total of 22 video recorded sessions. Two trained coders rated the presence of BCTs and MI techniques using the Behaviour Change Technique Taxonomy v1 (BCTTv1) and the table of MI techniques. Inter coder agreement was assessed using Cohen’s kappa and the prevalence- and bias-adjusted kappa (PABAK) statistic.
Results: Overall, 29 BCTs (on 93) and 27 MI techniques (on 38) were reliably coded across the sampled PAC sessions (Cohen’s k =.81, PABAK=.91). Popular BCTs included 3.1 Social support (unspecified), 1.1 Goal setting (behaviour), 1.4 Action planning, whereas OARS skills (i.e., open-ended questions, affirmations, reflective and summary statements) and 24. Emphasize autonomy were the predominating MI techniques. On average, 5.7 BCTs and 9.5 MI techniques were recorded per session.
Conclusions: Findings of this study provide a first detailed report of a PAC intervention and have important implications for PAC training and replication. Future research in this area specifically looking at the quality of application of the techniques and the influence of use and quality on physical activity behaviour over time is recommended.

▼ A variety of dietary and exercise approaches appear to be effective for weight management in the short-term, however these need to be accompanied by behavioural strategies to make them sustainable long-term. One of the strongest predictors of success is adherence to monitoring progress. However, although multiple monitoring options exist, they have typically been included as part of a suite of
behaviour strategies, making it difficult to determine which monitoring components are the most effective.
This thesis presents findings from the SWIFT (Support strategies for Whole-food diets, Intermittent Fasting, and Training) randomised parallel study, which determined the effectiveness of four different monitoring strategies (face-to-face monitoring, self-monitoring dietary intake, self-monitoring daily body weight, or self-monitoring hunger) on weight loss, body composition, blood markers, and psychosocial indices in overweight and obese adults undertaking a 12-month weight loss programme.
We first needed to ascertain the feasibility of the hunger training arm, as adherence had never been reported and was of concern. Hunger training teaches individuals to connect their physical symptoms of hunger with their blood glucose levels and to eat only when blood glucose is below a set target. We conducted a two-week feasibility study with 30 participants. The first 20 participants were asked to only eat if their blood glucose was 4.7 mmol/L or less prior to eating (protocol A), and the remaining 9 participants used an individualised cut-off based on their fasting glucose concentrations (protocol B). All but one participant completed the study (97% retention compared to feasibility criterion of 85%) and participants measured their blood glucose before 94% (95% CI 91, 98) of eating occasions (criterion 80%). However, participants following protocol A adhered to eating when blood glucose was below the prescribed level 66% of the time compared with 84% in those following protocol B (p = 0.010, within-person criterion of 75%).
Our individualised approach to hunger training (protocol B) was therefore used in the wider SWIFT study. 250 overweight or obese adults were randomised to control, brief monthly individual consults (brief support), daily self-monitoring of body weight, self-monitoring of dietary intake using MyFitnessPal, or hunger training. All groups received diet and exercise advice and 171 participants remained at 12 months (68.4% retention). All groups lost weight over the course of the intervention (typically 3.9-6.8kg) with no evidence of a difference between the control group and each of the intervention groups (all p≥0.084). However, participants in the hunger training group lost significantly more weight at 12 months than those in brief support (2.9kg, 95% CI 0.8-5.1kg, p=0.008) or MyFitnessPal (3.2kg, 0.1-6.4kg, p=0.046) groups. Few significant differences were observed in eating
behaviour (all p≥0.111), although brief support and hunger training reported more favourable effects on depression and anxiety at 12…

Die Techniken "Prompt use of imagery“, „Fear arousal“, „Prompt anticipated regret“, „Prompt identification as a role model“, „Agreement of behavioral contract“, „Environmental restructuring“, „Generalization of target behavior“ und „Review of behavioral goals“ kamen in keiner der getesteten Apps vor.
Background: The health promotion imputes big potential to health- and fitnessapps concerning the increase of physical activity. But to what extant mobile applications can actually lead to a behavioral change, remaines doubtful.
Methode: A special search- and selectionmode was used to generate top-ranked mobile applications from the Apple App Store categorized as "Health and Fitness". Twenty apps were downloaded, reviewed, and rated based on the "CALO-RE Taxonomy of Behavior Change Techniques“ of Hagger, Keatley und Chan (2014).
Results: On average the reviewed apps included 10 behavior change techniques (BCTs). The Range was between 3 and 18 BCTs. Differences were found between paid and free apps. Paid apps included an average number of 9 BCTs whereas free apps included an average number of 11 BCTs. Some techniques were found often in the analysed applications whereas some BCTs existed rarely or were not included at all. The BCTs "Prompt use of imagery“, „Fear arousal“, „Prompt anticipated regret“, „Prompt identification as a role model“, „Agreement of behavioral contract“, „Environmental restructuring“, „Generalization of target behavior“ und „Review of behavioral goals" did not exist in any reviewed app.
Conclusion: Included BCTs in mobile applications have potential to motivate physical activity, however on account of…

Während Techniken wie „Self monitoring of behavioural outcome“ (13) und „Demonstrate behaviour“ (12) jene waren, welche am öftesten in Applikationen auftraten, waren andere wie „Identifying barriers and problem resolution“, “Focus on past success“, „Environmental restructuring“, „Prompt identification as role model“, „Fear arousal (Angsterweckung)“, „Prompt self-talk“, „Promt use of imagery“ und „Relapse prevention (Rückfall Prävention)“ kein einziges Mal integriert.
Research suggests that smartphone applications in the sector of health and fitness can cause a positive change in training frequencies. Despite the fact that there is a large number of application programs in the field of health and fitness hardly any research exists. The vast majority of commercial apps has neither been examined with scientific methods nor evaluated (Conroy, Yang & Maher., 2014).
Results: The biggest number of BCT's found in one application was fifteen, the smallest was two. The average of the integrated BCT's was eight. The results also suggest that there is a difference between free and fee-based…

This study investigates the effects of educational television on a group of Black adolescents under
conditions of accelerated westernisation.
The Black adolescent - in sharp contrast to his White counterpart - is exposed to two broad cultural
streams of influence, namely:
(a) traditional cultures which form part and parcel of his personal African existence, and
(b) Western-orientated (White) culture, which is the dominant way of life, especially in the
urban areas.
Urban (Western) culture in the RSA is in essence dynamic, accelerated change being an integral
part of its nature. This change is often of a politically, socially and economically radical nature,
demanding considerable adjustment by Black adolescents who are in the process of westernisation.
Black adolescents are consequently often exposed not only to Western culture but also to future
shock.
Experimental and control groups of Black adolescents were tested by the TAT-Z. The experimental
group was then exposed to a series of Western educational television programmes for a period of
six months. These programmes reflected specific Western values, norms and practices. The
control group was not exposed to these television programmes.
Both groups were retested by the TAT-Z after six months. The pre- and post-test results were then
compared for similarities and differences. Significant qualitative and quantitative changes were
considered and discussed in terms of a westernisation model which was developed as part of the
study's theoretical frame of reference.
Amongst other things, the results reflected the following:
