▼ The following experiment presented herein compared growth, physical activity, stress-related responses, and puberty attainment in
heifers reared on high- (HIDENS) or low-stocking densities (LOWDENS). Sixty Angus x Hereford
heifers were ranked by age and BW (210 ± 2 d and 220 ± 2 kg, respectively) on d 0, and assigned to: a) 1 of 3 drylot pens (10 × 14 m pens; 10
heifers/pen) resulting in a stocking density of 14 m²/heifer (HIDENS; n = 3), or b) 1 of 3 pastures (25-ha pastures; 10
heifers/pasture), resulting in a stocking density of 25,000 m²/heifer (LOWDENS; n = 3). Pastures utilized herein were harvested for hay prior to the beginning of this experiment, and negligible forage was available for grazing to LOWDENS
heifers throughout the experimental period (d 0 to 182).
Heifers received the same limit-fed diet during the experiment, which averaged (DM basis) 4.0 kg/heifer daily of alfalfa-grass hay and 3.0 kg/heifer daily of a corn-based concentrate. Heifer shrunk BW was recorded after 16 h of feed and water withdrawal on d -3 and d 183 for ADG calculation. On d 0,
heifers were fitted with a pedometer fixed behind their right shoulder. Each week during the experiment, pedometer results were recorded and blood samples were collected for puberty evaluation via plasma progesterone. Plasma samples collected on d 0, 28, 56, 84, 112, 140, 161, and 182 were also analyzed for concentrations of cortisol and IGF-I. On d 28, 102, and 175, blood samples were also collected for RNA isolation and analysis of heat shock protein (HSP) 70 and HSP72 mRNA expression. On d 0, 49, 98, 147, and 182, hair samples were collected from the tail switch for analysis of hair cortisol concentrations. No treatment effects were detected (P = 0.66) for heifer BW or ADG.
Heifers from LOWDENS had more (P < 0.01) steps/week compared with HIDENS.
Heifers from LOWDENS had greater (P = 0.05) mRNA expression of HSP72, and tended (P = 0.10) to have greater mRNA expression of HSP70 compared with HIDENS. Plasma concentrations of cortisol and IGF-I were often greater (P ≤ 0.05) in LOWDENS vs. HIDENS
heifers (treatment × day interaction; P < 0.01). Hair cortisol concentrations were greater (P < 0.01) for HIDENS vs. LOWDENS
heifers beginning on d 98 (treatment × day interaction; P < 0.01).
Heifers from HIDENS experienced delayed puberty attainment and had a lower (P < 0.01) proportion of pubertal
heifers on d 182 compared with LOWDENS (treatment × day interaction; P < 0.01). In summary, HIDENS negatively impacted heifer stress-related and physiological responses, and delayed puberty attainment compared with LOWDENS.

▼ The objective of our study was to investigate the relationship between feed efficiency and fertility in growing
heifers. One hundred and seventy-nine replacement
beef heifers were enrolled.
Heifers from 10 to 12 months of age entered the University of Florida Feed Efficiency Facility (FEF) and received a diet high in forage to reflect a pasture-based diet. While in the FEF,
heifers were exposed to a 14-d adaptation period, followed by a 70-d data collection period that included data for residual feed intake (RFI) and feed to gain ratio. Weekly BW, BCS, and blood samples were collected. Attainment of puberty was determined by concentrations of progesterone. Antral follicle count was assessed in all
heifers on the first day of the breeding season using transrectal ultrasonography. Conception and pregnancy rates were determined after transrectal ultrasonography evaluating the presence of a viable conceptus. Our data revealed no differences in the mean age at puberty, pregnancy rates to AI, and overall pregnancy, ADG, FTG, RFI among breeds. An effect was detected between breed and DMI, BCS and BW, where Braford
heifers had a lower DMI, BW and BCS. Results indicated an effect of RFI group on ADG, FTG and DMI. Ranking
heifers into RFI groups did not affect pregnancy rates, and initial or final BW and BCS. However,
heifers in the Low RFI group attained puberty at a younger age than
heifers in the high RFI group. Therefore, more efficient
heifers attained puberty earlier compared to less efficient
heifers. ( en )

▼ The following experiment presented herein compared growth, physiological, and reproductive responses of
beef heifers with (MI) or without (CON) access to a creep-feeder, as a manner to stimulate metabolic imprinting while nursing their dams. On d 0 of the experiment, 60 Angus × Hereford
heifers were ranked by initial BW and age (140 ± 3 kg and 68 ± 3 d, respectively) as well as dam age and BCS, and assigned to pairs so all ranking criteria were similar between
heifers within each pair. On d 1, pairs were randomly assigned to MI (n = 15) or CON (n = 15). From d 1 to 51, MI pairs and their dams were allocated to 15 drylot pens where
heifers had ad libitum access to a corn-based supplement through a creep-feeder. The CON pairs and their dams were maintained in an adjacent single drylot pen. From d 52 to 111, cattle from both treatments were managed as a single group on a semiarid range pasture. On d 111,
heifers were weaned and allocated to 2 pastures according to treatment, receiving hay and a corn-based concentrate until d 326. Full BW was recorded prior to (d -1 and 0) and at the end of the creep-feeding period (d 50 and 51), whereas shrunk BW was collected on d 112 and 326. On d 0, 51, 111, 187, 261, and 325, blood was collected and real-time ultrasonography for LM depth and backfat thickness assessment was performed. Blood was also collected every 10 d from d 113 to 323 for puberty evaluation via plasma progesterone concentrations. Liver and subcutaneous fat biopsies were performed on d 51, 111, 261, and 325. Average daily gain was greater (P < 0.01) for MI than CON from d 1 to 51, tended (P = 0.09) to be greater for CON than MI from d 112 to 326, whereas BW on d 326 was similar (P = 0.87) between treatments. On d 51, MI had greater (P ≤ 0.01) plasma IGF-I and glucose concentrations, as well as mRNA expression of hepatic pyruvate carboxylase and adipose fatty acid synthase than CON. On d 261 and 325, plasma insulin concentrations were greater (P ≤ 0.03) in CON than MI. Mean mRNA expression of hepatic IGF-I and adipose peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma were greater (P ≤ 0.05) in MI than CON.
Heifers assigned to MI attained puberty earlier (P = 0.04) during the experiment than CON, although age and BW at puberty were similar (P ≤ 0.74) between treatments. In conclusion, supplementing nursing
heifers via creep-feeding for 50 d altered physiological and biochemical parameters suggestive of a metabolic imprinting effect, but did not impact heifer age or BW at puberty.

▼ This experiment compared two long-term CIDR-based protocols to synchronize estrus and ovulation prior to fixed-time AI (FTAI) in postpartum
beef cows. Cows assigned to the 14-19 d CIDR-PG protocol (n = 196) received CIDR inserts (1.38 g progesterone) from d 0 to 14 and PGF2[alpha] (PG; 25 mg, i.m.) 19 d after CIDR removal on d 33. Cows assigned to the 14-16 d CIDR-PG protocol (n = 195) received CIDR inserts from d 3 to 17, and PG 16 d after CIDR removal on d 33. Cows in both treatments were artificially inseminated on d 36, 72 h after PG, with GnRH (100 [mu]g i.m.) at FTAI. Blood samples for progesterone (P4) were collected at d – 10 and d 0 to determine pretreatment estrous cyclicity status, and again at PG. Blood samples for estradiol (E2) were collected at PG and FTAI. HeatWatch estrus detection transmitters were utilized from CIDR removal until FTAI to determine onset of estrus following CIDR removal and PG. Dominant follicle diameter was determined via ultrasonagraphy at PG and FTAI. Ultrasound pregnancy diagnosis was performed 70 d after FTAI and confirmed at d 140 of gestation. Cows in both treatments had similar size dominant follicles at PG, and FTAI. Progesterone at PG was higher for 14-16 d CIDR-PG treated cows compared to 14-19 d treated cows. Mean concentrations of E2 were similar between treatments at PG, but were higher at FTAI for 14-16 d CIDR-PG treated cows. There were no differences between treatments in E2 at FTAI for cows that failed to exhibit estrus after PG. Estrous response after PG was higher for cows assigned to the 14-19 d CIDR-PG protocol. Estrous response after PG among cows [less than or equal to] 4 yr was higher for cows assigned to the 14-19 d CIDR-PG protocol, but there were no differences between treatments for cows [less than or equal to] 3 yr. There were no differences between treatments for FTAI pregnancy rate. However, pregnancy rate after FTAI among cows [greater than or equal to] 4 yr tended to be higher for cows assigned to the 14-19 d CIDR-PG protocol. In summary, both protocols worked effectively to synchronize estrus and ovulation prior to FTAI in postpartum
beef cows, suggesting that a range in interval from CIDR removal to PG may be feasible when using long-term CIDR-based protocols. Higher estrous response rates after PG and improvements in FTAI pregnancy rate for 14-19 d treated cows [greater than or equal to] 4 yr of age warrants further consideration.

▼ A series of 4 observational studies was performed on a
Bovelder herd at Johannesburg
Water’s Northern Farm. The heifer
and cow breeding seasons started on 15 October and
1 November
every year, and consisted of 50 d and 60 d of oestrus observation
respectively,
with once daily artificial insemination (AI). Five
to 7 days after the AI period bulls were
added in multi-sire
groups for a period of 42 d. Pregnancy diagnoses were performed
between 23 March and 26 April every year. The farming system had
been in place for >25
years, with few deviations.
In the first
study, reproductive tract scoring (RTS) by transrectal palpation on
a 5-
point scale was performed 1 day before the start of breeding
on a group of
heifers (n = 272)
born in 2002.
Heifers with RTS 1
or 2 were estimated to be pre-pubertal, those with RTS 3
pubertal
and those with RTS 4 or 5 post-pubertal. Pre-breeding body weight
(BW) and body
condition score (BCS) were recorded, and Kleiber
ratio (KR) was calculated (average daily
gain/end weight0.75).
Heifers were followed until they weaned their first calves. The
objectives of this study were to determine if RTS is a valid tool
to predict reproduction and
production performance in limited bred
beef heifers, and to compare its predictive value with
that of BW,
BCS, age and KR. After adjustment for BW and age, RTS was
positively
associated with pregnancy rate to the 50 day AI season
(P < 0.01), calf weaning weight (P <
0.01) and pregnancy
rate to the subsequent breeding season (P < 0.01), and
negatively
associated with days to calving (P < 0.01). RTS was
a better predictor of fertility than was
vi
KR, and similar in
its prediction of calf weaning weight. It was concluded that RTS is
a
predictor of heifer fertility and compares well with other
traits used as a predictor of
production outcomes.
It was further
hypothesised that RTS may predict long-term reproductive
performance due to its association with pregnancy outcome and days
to calving after first
breeding, combined with reports that
heifers calving early tend to calve early in subsequent
seasons
and have increased lifetime production. In study 2, a 7-year
longitudinal study, 292
beef cows in two age cohorts were observed
from 1-2 d before their first breeding season
(day of RTS), until
they had weaned up to 5 calves. Years to reproductive failure was
defined
as the number of years until a cow failed to become
pregnant during the AI season. Animals
with RTS 1 or 2 were at
increased risk of early reproductive failure compared to those
with
RTS 4 or 5 (HR = 1.4, 95% CI 1.0, 1.9) despite the fact that
RTS was not associated with
calving rate or days to calving after
the second calving season. The predictive value of RTS
was lower
in the age cohort with a higher prevalence of anoestrus. Most
animals with RTS 1
or 2 that were subsequently detected in oestrus
were in early to mid di-oestrus at the time of
scoring. It was
concluded that RTS is a valid culling tool to improve long-term
reproductive
success in a seasonal breeding…

▼ Three studies were conducted to determine the effects of stockpiled winter forage species and protein supplementation strategy on heifer growth, reproductive performance, nutritional status, rumen fermentation, and the economic implications of forage-based heifer development. In all three studies, spring-born, beef heifers were stratified by BW and randomly assigned to 1 of 3 stockpiled forages: (1) endophyte-infected tall fescue (TF, Schedonorus arundinaceus (Schreb.) Dumort) (2) big bluestem (Andropogon gerardi Vitman) and indiangrass (Sorghastrum nutans L.) combination (BI), or (3) switchgrass (SG, Panicum virgatum L.). Forage treatments were randomly allocated to receive 1 of 2 supplement types: (1) 0.68 kg·heifer-1·d-1 of dried distiller’s grains with solubles (DDGS) or (2) 0.22 kg·heifer-1·d-1 of blood meal and fish meal (BF), resulting in a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. Treatments were initiated in January and concluded in April at the onset of the breeding season. In Exp. 1, BW was greater (P < 0.01) for TF heifers, resulting from an increased (P < 0.01) ADG from initiation to breeding for TF heifers. From January to April, heifers grazing SG and BI pastures had a negative ADG; however, from breeding to final pregnancy diagnosis, SG and BI heifers compensated and had greater (P < 0.01) ADG than TF heifers. Pregnancy rates at fixed timed-AI and overall pregnancy rates did not differ (P ≥ 0.38) by forage or supplement treatment. In Exp. 2, heifers grazing SG pastures had greater (P = 0.04) ruminal acetate concentrations than their counterparts. However, ruminal concentrations of propionate and butyrate were not influenced (P > 0.32) by forage species. Due to an increase in ruminal acetate concentration, ruminal acetate:propionate ratio was greater (P = 0.04) for heifers grazing SG pastures. In Exp. 3, total cost of producing a heifer’s first calf using the three forage-based systems was 1,079 to 1,149/head with tall fescue (TF) being the most expensive forage-based heifer development forage system. Overall, low-input heifer development using stockpiled warm-season forages and protein supplementation may be a viable opportunity to extend the grazing season, lower production costs, and select for more efficient replacement females in the southeastern United States.

beef bulls is provided. Subsequently, two studies
were conducted that investigated potential factors affecting sale
price. Within the second chapter, effects of various lot
characteristics, physical attributes, and management traits are
examined to determine their influence on the sale price of bred
heifers sold from 2010 through 2018 and bred cows sold from 2011
through 2018 through video auctions. Findings suggest that multiple
elements influence the sale price of bred
heifers and bred cows,
including auction year or time of sale, breed description, and
various physical attributes. The third chapter summarizes research
investigating the effect of selection indices and EPDs on the sale
price of Red Angus bulls marketed and sold across the United States
from 2017 through 2019. Results suggest a relationship between sale
price and genetic information but indicate that other factors not
captured within the data – such as physical attributes, marketing
strategies, and the value of breeder reputation – may be further
affecting the sale price of
beef bulls. These studies further
support the idea that producers consider a combination of marketing
factors, physical attributes, genetic traits, and management
characteristics when making selection decisions.

▼ This thesis was drawn from three experiments with
beef heifers under different supplementation strategies at pasture. The first work aimed to evaluate productive and nutritional performance of female calves fed mineral mixture or multiple supplements and milk production, pasture intake and digestibility of
beef cows, in Uruchloa decumbens pastures. It was used 48 female calves with average age of 5 months and initial average weight of 125.41.34 kg and their respective dams with initial average weight of 435.2 10.3. The experimental design was the complete random design. Supplements contained approximately 25% of crude protein (CP) and progressive replacement of soybean meal (SB) by cotton seed meal 38% (CS) at the levels of 0; 33; 67 and 100% for treatments CS0, CS33, CS67 and CS100, respectively. Animals in the control treatment (CT) were fed only mineral mixture ad libitum; supplements were offered at the amount of 0.5 kg/animal/day in the other treatments. Daily gain (g) was 687.8; 733.2; 820.0; 760.6, respectively for treatments CT, CS0, CS33, CS67 and CS100. Supplemented female calves presented greater weight gain. It was not found effects of the levels of CS (P>0.10) on daily average gain. Intakes in kg/day of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CD), non fibrous carbohydrates (NFC), digested dry matter and total digestible nutrients were greater (P<0.10) for supplemented animals than for non supplemented animals. It was found a linear decreasing effect among levels of replacing SM by CS with the increasing level of CS on intake of digested dry matter and digested neutral detergent fiber. Coefficients of total apparent digestibility of DM, OM, CP and NFC were the highest (P<0.10) for supplemented animals. A decreasing linear effect on digestibility of neutral detergent fiber was found among replacing levels of SM by CS. Supplementation of female calves did not influence the performance of the cows, the milk production and dietary components by the cows (P>0.10). It is concluded that supplementation in the pre-weaning period provides a greater weight of female calves. The second work aimed to evaluate the effect of supplementation with multiple supplement or mineral mixture in the dry season (phase 1) and/or dry-rainy transition season (phase 2) on the nutritional variables and productive performance of
beef cattle in Uruchloa decumbens pasture. It was used 40 40 x
heifers at initial age and average weight of 8 months and 200 3.74 kg, respectively in a complete random design with four treatments and 10 replicates. In the phase 1, two groups of animals were fed multiple supplement and the other two groups were fed only mineral mixture ad libitum. In the second phase of the experiment, the two groups that received multiple supplements, one continued to receive multiple supplements and the other was receiving only mineral. For the two groups fed only mineral mixture in the phase 1, one continued receiving mineral mixture in phase 2 and the other receiving supplement in phase 2. In the phase 1,…

▼ This study was conducted to: i) determine the effect of residual feed intake (RFI) on first parity fertility and subsequent lifetime productivity of 820 females ranked as low, medium, and high RFI in western Canada and ii) investigate the relationship between RFI measured as a heifer and re-measured as a mature cow. No significant correlations were found between RFI and fertility/productivity traits. A negative trend (P < 0.10) was observed between RFI, RFIfat and MPPAbw, however, this trend was no longer apparent when RFI was adjusted for back fat and feeding event frequency (RFIfat&activity). No significant (P < 0.05) relationship was found between heifer RFI and cow RFI. These results suggest that selection for feed efficient, low RFI
heifers i) has no impact on their fertility and productivity as cows, and ii) may not lead to superior feed efficiency as a mature cow as measured by RFI and Cow DMI.

▼ Eighty Brahman-influenced cows (5.6 BCS) were assigned to graze common bermudagrass (CB) or toxic tall fescue (E+) during a 60-d breeding season. Body condition (BC) was assessed at d 0, 30, and 60 of breeding season. Cows were managed to achieve marginal (4.2 BCS) or good (6.3 BCS) BC during last trimester. Heifer birth and weaning (WW; 7 to 8 mo) weights were recorded. The Angus sired
heifers were weighed and randomly assigned to E+ or non-toxic (Novel) tall fescue at 9 to 10 mo of age for 190d. Heifer weight, growth data, and antral follicle count (AFC) were collected at yearling (11 to 12 mo) and prebreeding (13 to 14 mo). Pasture was experimental unit and heifer age as covariate. Main effects were cow conception forage (ConFor), conception BC (ConBC), last trimester BC (LateBC), and heifer fescue grazed during development (Hfes). Cows grazing E+ ConFor had
heifers that weighed less at birth than
heifers from cows grazing CB (33.3 vs. 35.2 kg). Cow ConFor x LateBC interaction affected heifer weight and pelvic area.
Heifers developed on E+ from marginal-ConBC, E+ ConFor, and marginal-LateBC cows had the lowest ADG. Novel heifer AFC from good-ConBC, CB ConFor, and marginal-LateBC cows was greater than E+ AFC from marginal-ConBC, CB ConFor, and good-LateBC cows (25.1 vs. 3.8 follicles). Cow LateBC x Hfes affected heifer pregnancy rate (90.3, 69.6, 50.0, and 43.8 percent, Novel
heifers from good-LateBC cows, Novel
heifers from marginal-LateBC cows, E+
heifers from good-LateBC cows, and E+
heifers from marginal-LateBC cows, respectively). Ensuring adequate conception and late-gestation BC and developing
heifers on Novel fescue will increase pelvic growth, number of antral follicles, and pregnancy rates of heifer offspring. Industry applicable tools such as monitoring cow BCS, using skeletal growth indicators, and grazing Novel fescue could be beneficial in selecting replacement
heifers.

▼ This two-essay thesis aims to better identify non-adopting cow-calf producers in Oklahoma and to find the value of steer and heifer characteristics sold in an auction barn. Using the 2009 Beef Management and Marketing Survey, the first piece determines the least adopted value-added management and marketing practices, determines the most frequent reason categories hindering adoption, identifies the probability of producers not adopting a practices based on their characteristics, and identifies the probability of non-adopting producers to state specific reason categories hindering adoption for each practice using frequency procedures and binary logit models in SAS. The second piece uses Oklahoma Quality Beef Network auction data to determine the value of feeder cattle traits explicitly for steers and heifers in order to make market prices more transparent for buyers and sellers. Furthermore, the second piece uses a hedonic pricing model in SAS to achieve the desired objective. In the first piece, results showed producers are most constrained to adopting value-added management and marketing practices because the doubt the financial return from adoption or they do not know how to properly implement a practice. Moreover, a majority of Oklahoma producers are either older with a lot of experience or are "hobby" producers who receive a majority of their income off of the farm. The results also showed herd size, region, the combination of age and experience, and percentage of farm income to influence non-adoption probabilities. In the second piece, the results revealed a much larger discount for steers than heifers on most characteristics. This is likely due to the heifers being desired for their maternal ability and for reproductive purposes.

▼ Data science has emerged as an academic field and an
important decision-making tool for the private sector. This is the
result of advances in technology that allow the collection and
management of large data sets. Data analytics allows scientists to
pursue questions that cannot be addressed with controlled
experiments. The objective of studies within this dissertation was
to use data analytics to evaluate trends in performance, health and
carcass traits from feedlot cattle, and determine the effect of
Holstein and
beef-dairy cross breed descriptions of cattle lots on
sale price.
The first study utilized the Tri-County Steer Carcass
Futurity Cooperative data collected from 2002 through 2018 to
analyze trends across years for performance, health, and carcass
traits for steers and
heifers. Performance traits evaluated
included arrival weight, average daily gain, feed to gain, days on
feed, and harvest weight. The regression coefficients (slope) were
significant (P < 0.10) for each of these traits for both steers
and
heifers with the exception of feed:gain (P = 0.59). The R2 for
these equations was small, however, indicating that year only
accounted for small amount of the variation, and that there was
little change in these traits for the duration of the study. Health
trends included morbidity risk, number of times treated, and
mortality risk. The percentage morbidity increased (P < 0.0001)
for steers and
heifers. The overall mean morbidity risk for steers
was 24% and 20% for
heifers. The percentage of steers and
heifers
receiving no treatments for morbidity decreased (P < 0.0001).
Concurrently, the percentage of steers and
heifers treated one,
two, or three or more times increased (P < 0.0001). Mortality
percentage increased for steers (P < 0.0001) and
heifers (P <
0.001). The overall mean mortality risk for steers was 1.8% and
1.4% for
heifers. Carcass trait trends evaluated included hot
carcass weight, fat thickness, ribeye area, kidney pelvic heart fat
percentage, dressing percentage, marbling score, calculated yield
grade, and carcass value. The regression coefficients (slope) were
significant (P < 0.01) for each of these traits for both steers
and
heifers. With the exception of carcass value, the R2 value for
these equations was small. This indicates that year only accounted
for small amount of the variation, and that there was little change
in these traits over the duration of the study.
The second study
utilized the Tri-County Steer Carcass Futurity Cooperative data to
evaluate the effect of sire breed on performance, health, and
carcass traits for steers and
heifers. Sire breeds included in
these analyses were Angus, Charolais, Hereford, Red Angus, and
Simmental. Sire breed affected arrival weight, average daily gain,
harvest weight, days on feed, feed to gain, feed cost, feed
consumed, hot carcass weight, dressing percentage, fat thickness,
ribeye area, calculated yield grade, and overall carcass value.
Odds ratios were calculated for morbidity and mortality events. The
sire breed of an animal was associated…

▼ To evaluate the effects of reducing concentrations of progesterone (P4) during an ovulation synchronization protocol on pregnancy rates to fixed-timed artificial insemination (TAI),
beef cows and
heifers were assigned to receive treatments: 7-d CO-Synch+CIDR (CO-Synch+CIDR); or 7-d CO-Synch+CIDR with an additional injection of prostaglandin F2alpha (PGF) at the initiation of the protocol (PG-CO-Synch+CIDR). Concentrations of P4 were greater at CIDR removal for CO-Synch+CIDR than for PG-CO-Synch+CIDR for cows and
heifers. Follicle diameter at CIDR removal was greater for PG-CO-Synch+CIDR compared to CO-Synch+CIDR for cows, but not
heifers, and pregnancy rates to TAI were similar between treatments. To determine the effects of administration of bovine somatotropin (bST; 325 mg) on hormone concentration, conceptus development and postnatal offspring performance, suckled
beef cows were exposed to a TAI protocol, and randomly assigned to receive treatments: CTRL, no bST; TAIbST, bST on d 0 (TAI); d14bST, bST on d 14; 2bST, bST on d 0 and 14. Administration of bST at TAI increased plasma concentration of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). The TAIbST treatment had increased mRNA expression of myxovirus 2 on d 21 compared to 2bST. However, fetal size, birth weight and postnatal performance did not differ among treatments. In another experiment, Year 1,
heifers were enrolled in a TAI protocol and assigned to receive either no bST (CTRL), 325 mg at TAI (S-bST) or 14 d later (d14bST), or 650 mg at TAI (D-bST). Injection of bST increased concentrations of IGF-1, however, did not altered fetal size.
Heifers in D-bST had greater pregnancy rate to TAI compared to d14bST and CTRL. Year 2,
heifers were assigned to D-bST or CTRL treatments, and data from both years were combined. Injection of bST increased concentration of IGF-1, but failed to increase fetal size, and a treatment by year interaction was detected for pregnancy rate to TAI. In conclusion, addition of PGF to the 7-d CO-Synch+CIDR decreased concentrations of P4, but failed to increase TAI pregnancy rates. Administration of bST enhanced concentrations of IGF-1, but failed to improve TAI pregnancy rates, fetal size, had no effect on calf birth weight and postnatal performance. ( en )

▼ Two 2-yr experiments evaluated the long-term effects of metabolic imprinting and different nutritional management systems for EW
beef calves (Bos spp.). Experiment 1 evaluated the growth performance, carcass characteristics and muscle gene expression of
beef steers, while experiment 2 evaluated the liver gene expression, growth and reproductive performance of
beef heifers. In both experiments, calves were normally weaned (NW) at 250 d of age (d 180), or early-weaned (EW) at 70 d of age (d 0) and randomly assigned to 1 of 3 EW calf management systems: 1) EW and limit-fed a high-concentrate diet in drylot for at least 180 d; 2) EW and limit-fed a high-concentrate diet in drylot for 90 d, then bahiagrass grazing until the time of NW (d 180); and 3) EW and ryegrass grazing for 60 to 90 d, then bahiagrass grazing until the time of NW. Experiment 1 demonstrated that overall growth performance of EW steers was similar or greater than NW steers. Early-weaned calves provided a high-concentrate diet in drylot for at least 90 d had greater body weight at the time of NW, and enhanced growth performance during the first 28 d of the finishing phase, when compared to NW and EW steers grazing annual ryegrass pastures. Also, feeding a high-concentrate diet to EW steers for at least 90 d enhanced plasma concentrations of IGF-1, and the expression of genes associated with growth (muscle IGF-1 receptor and paired box gene 7) and adipose tissue formation (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor ?). However, early-exposure to high-concentrate diets did not affect the overall carcass characteristics and marbling scores of steers slaughtered at a common backfat thickness. Experiment 2 demonstrated that EW
heifers provided a high-concentrate diet for at least 90 d in drylot and EW
heifers grazed on ryegrass pastures, had similar or greater growth performance than NW
heifers. Furthermore, it provided evidence that early-exposure to a high-concentrate diet lead to metabolic imprinting effects, such as altered liver IGF-1 expression (during periods of similar nutritional management) and early puberty achievement of Bos indicus-influenced
beef heifers. Calf weaning at the onset of the breeding season enhanced cow growth performance, and tended to enhance reproductive performance of multiparous cows. ( en )

As vacas receberam apenas mistura mineral ad libitum.

This thesis was drawn from three experiments with beef heifers under different supplementation strategies at pasture. The first work aimed to evaluate productive and nutritional performance of female calves fed mineral mixture or multiple supplements and milk production, pasture intake and digestibility of beef cows, in Uruchloa decumbens pastures. It was used 48 female calves with average age of 5 months and initial average weight of 125.4±1.34 kg and their respective dams with initial average weight of 435.2 ± 10.3. The experimental design was the complete random design. Supplements contained approximately 25% of crude protein (CP) and progressive replacement of soybean meal (SB) by cotton
seed meal 38% (CS) at the levels of 0; 33; 67 and 100% for treatments CS0, CS33, CS67 and CS100, respectively. Coefficients of total apparent
digestibility of DM, OM, CP and NFC were the highest (P<0.10) for supplemented animals. The second work aimed to evaluate the effect of supplementation with multiple supplement or mineral mixture in the dry season (phase 1) and/or dry-rainy transition season (phase 2) on the nutritional variables and productive performance of beef cattle in Uruchloa decumbens pasture. It was used 40 40 x heifers at initial age and average weight of 8 months and 200 ± 3.74 kg, respectively in a complete random design with four treatments and 10 replicates. In the phase 1, two groups of animals were fed multiple supplement
and the other two groups were fed only mineral mixture ad libitum. In the second phase of the experiment, the two groups that received multiple supplements,…

▼ Reproductive performance is crucial for sustained financial success in the
beef cattle industry. This dissertation includes a population study that quantified the incidence of Neospora caninum infections in the central region of the United States and tested its relationship with reproductive performance in
beef cattle. Trial one of that study concluded that 6.9% of open, replacement
heifers (n = 1306) tested seropositive. The second trial in that project found that 9.6% of the breeding age females (n = 500) tested were seropositive for Neospora caninum; and that state in which the cattle lived and age impacted (P < 0.05) infection rate. Breed composition, number of farm dogs on the ranch, and use of total mixed rations were not associated (P > 0.1) with seropositive tests. Fewer (P < 0.05) seropositive females were pregnant in Oklahoma, but overall infection rate was not associated (P > 0.1) with non-pregnant females. The second study, tested for a relationship between heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) genotypes and reproductive characteristics. Blood samples were collected from
beef heifers (n = 165) being developed for replacements and Hsp70 genotypes (A1125C, C895D, G1851A, G2033C) were determined using a commercial laboratory (Neogen Corporation; Lincoln, NE). There was an association (P = 0.04) between C895D genotype and the percentage of lymphocytes in circulation. Pelvic area, reproductive tract score, pregnancy rate, and white blood cell concentrations were affected by (P < 0.05) genotype at G2033C. Cows with heterozygous genotype for G2033C had a lower (P = 0.02) pregnancy rate; conversely, those same cows had larger (P = 0.02) PA. No associations were detected between A1125C or G1851A and the traits evaluated. While more research is needed in this area, these projects indicate that identifying Neospora caninum infected cattle and Hsp70 genotypes could be useful tools for selecting
beef cattle.

Nutritional, genetic and meat quality aspects of once-bred heifer beef production systems in New Zealand.

▼ Issues related to the nutrition, management, carcass and meat quality traits, and the profitability of "Once-Bred Heifer" (OBH) beef production systems under New Zealand pastoral conditions were investigated in this research programme. Once-bred heifer beef production systems involve surplus heifers from the dairy industry which are mated to beef sire breeds at about 15 months of age and rear their calves for 3-6 months before being slaughtered at 30-32 months of age. Both the heifer dams and their progeny are thus prime meat-producing animals. The performance of once-bred v. unbred heifers and of early-weaned (EW) heifers (heifers weaned at day 84 of lactation "L84") v. normal-weaned (NW) heifers (heifers weaned at L147) were studied in the first two trials. In the third trial, Hereford x Friesian (H x F) v. Simmental x Friesian (S x F) heifers offered a restricted herbage allowance (RHA, an allowance to maintain weight) v. normal herbage allowance (NHA, an allowance to grow at 0.6-0.7 kg/d) during mid pregnancy (from pregnancy day 114, "P114", to P214) were studied in an attempt to investigate the effects of dam genotype and prior herbage allowance on the performance of heifer dams (growth rate, reproduction and carcass and meat quality traits) and their progeny (growth rate and weaning weights). A gross margin analysis was also performed to evaluate the profitability of alternative OBH beef production systems. Once-bred v. unbred Hereford x Friesian heifers consumed similar amounts of herbage organic matter (OM) during the period equivalent to late pregnancy of the former group (4.72 v. 5.15 kg OM/hd/d), but lactating heifers consumed more herbage OM than the comparable unbred group (11.36 v. 9.19 kg OM/hd/d, P < 0.05) to support the growth of their calves, as well as themselves. Unbred heifers had greater carcass weights and higher dressing-out percentages than once-bred heifers. However, the differences in other carcass and meat quality traits between the heifer groups were small, indicating that once-bred heifers are capable of producing meat comparable in quality to that of unbred and empty heifers. Higher gross margins ($5-10/Stock Unit (SU)) were calculated for once-bred v. unbred heifers. During the 10 days immediately prior to weaning, NW heifers had organic matter, dry matter and energy intakes which were slightly higher (P < 0.10) than those of EW heifers (weaned at L84). Weaning caused a slight weight loss in both early- and normal-weaned heifers for the first 30-45 days post-weaning, but liveweight (LW) was recovered after this period. During L84 - L147, EW heifers had a higher daily liveweight gain (LWG) than NW heifers (0.79 v. 0.51 kg/d, P < 0.01). Calves weaned at L84 had significantly lower daily LWG than NW calves during the period L84 - L147 (0.73 v. 1.30 kg/d, P < 0.001). This resulted in EW calves being 30 kg lighter (P < 0.001) than NW calves at the time of weaning for the latter group. Early-weaned heifers reached the target slaughter weight in March and, overall, had slightly better carcass…

▼ Nutritional and metabolic statuses during postnatal development control the timing of pubertal maturation in mammals. Studies reported herein had two overall aims. In Aim I, objectives were to characterize functional and morphological modifications that occur in the neuroendocrine system of prepubertal
heifers in response to increased body weight (BW) gain during calfhood. We first tested the hypothesis that hypothalamic release of neuropeptide Y (NPY), an important inhibitory peptide involved in the integration of metabolism and reproduction, would be decreased in
heifers that gained BW at higher rates. Confirming our hypothesis,
heifers that gained 1 kg/day had lower concentrations of NPY in the third ventricle cerebrospinal fluid than
heifers that gained 0.5 kg/day. These data corroborate previous results from our group that demonstrated that similar nutritional treatments result in decreased hypothalamic NPY expression and neuronal projections to gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) cells. We then tested the hypothesis that proopiomelanocortin (POMC) cells, a critical excitatory metabolic-sensing pathway in the hypothalamus, could be involved in the nutritional control of puberty.
Heifers that gained BW at higher rates had greater POMC expression in the arcuate nucleus and an increased number of kisspeptin neurons innervated by fibers containing melanocyte-stimulating hormone alpha (αMSH), a product of the POMC gene. Very few GnRH neurons were observed in close apposition to αMSH fibers and these projections were not dependent on metabolic status. Results suggest that melanocortin signaling through arcuate kisspeptin neurons may be an important mechanism involved in the nutritionally-programed acceleration of puberty in
heifers. In Aim II we hypothesized that metabolic programming of processes underlying puberty could be shifted temporally during calfhood through the use of a stair-step, compensatory growth model. Results indicated that nutritional restriction between 6.5 to 9 mo of age did not affect the proportion of
heifers pubertal by 12 mo of age when compared to continuous accelerated BW gain. Furthermore, we observed that increasing nutrient availability between 6 and 9 mo of age may potentially time pubertal onset consistently at around 12 mo of age while avoiding precocious puberty. Therefore, similar managerial strategies may allow optimal timing of sexual maturation in replacement
beef heifers.
