▼ This study evaluated the diversity of the genus Eurydice on sandy beaches in South Africa by analysis of morphological as well as genetic data. Type specimens of the three Eurydice species currently known from South Africa, E. longicornis, E. kensleyi and E. barnardi were obtained from the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin and the Iziko Museum in Cape Town, South Africa. These specimens were studied in order to become familiar with their morphology. Eurydice individuals obtained from 30 sites spanning the South African coast, from Port Nolloth on the north-west coast to Bhanga Nek on the north-east coast were then examined. The two species E. kensleyi and E. barnardi, as well as four new morphospecies (A, B, C and D) were discriminated from these individuals by suites of morphological character types. Morphospecies A, B, C and D were therefore delimited according to the Phenetic Species Concept. None of the Eurydice individuals examined exhibited the same suite of characters as E. longicornis. Molecular sequences of two mitochondrial markers, cytochrome c oxidase 1 and 16S rRNA were analysed using both distance- and monophyly based methods. Uncorrected p-distances, a Minimum Spanning Haplotype Network and Maximum Likelihood phylogenetic trees were investigated to determine genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships in the six Eurydice morphospecies. Results from the genetic analysis made it possible to delimit morphospecies A B, C and D as phylospecies A, B, C and D according to the Phylogenetic Species Concept, thereby validating the species status of four new Eurydice species, provisionally called Eurydice A, Eurydice B, Eurydice C and Eurydice D. This increases the total number of Eurydice species from South Africa to seven, of which six form part of the macrofauna of sandy beaches. The outcomes of this study represent an important step in the resolution of the taxonomy of the genus Eurydice in South Africa and enhance current knowledge of the biodiversity of sandy beach macrofauna, thus facilitating better-informed decisions on conservation policies and management to the benefit of conservation of biodiversity on sandy beaches in South Africa.

The applicability of the open source model XBeach was tested for pocket beaches in this paper. First, schematized model setups have been used to assess the performance of XBeach qualitatively. It was found that adjustments of the initial bed were required to obtain the expected hydrodynamic conditions. The default sediment advection calibration factors had to be increased to obtain the expected morphological response of the pockets (stationair: 0.15, surfbeat: 0.30). The results have shown that the surfbeat mode outperforms the stationary mode based on a qualitative assessment. It was furthermore found that wave-current interaction produced unreliable results and should be avoided when modelling pocket beaches using XBeach. Non-hydrostatic simulations produced significantly more sedimentation behind the headlands due to the inclusion of diffraction. This mode was found to produce unexpected erosion at the upper shoreface however, indicating the inapplicability of the sediment transport formulas in non-hydrostatic simulations. Expansion of the classic pocket beach into two adjacent pocket beaches showed that these systems have to be treated as a complete system if interactions between these pockets are expected (separated by a salient). It was found that an individual assessment is adequate if a tombolo separates the pockets. Second, the morphological developments between the year 2000 and 2015 at Tanjong Beach (Singapore) were modelled using XBeach. For the modelled bed level changes, which were compared to bathymetric measurements, a ‘Good’ Mean-Squared Error Skill Score of 0.31 was found. In the prepared model, the obtained sediment advection calibration factors from the first part were used and model calibration was not performed. Based on the schematizations and the case study performed in this study, XBeach was found to be applicable for long term process-based modelling of pocket beaches.

▼ Coarse-grained beaches, such as pure gravel (PG), mixed sand-gravel (MSG) and composite (CSG) beaches, can be considered as one of the most resilient non-cohesive morpho-sedimentary coastal environments to energetic wave forcing (e.g., storms). The hydraulically-rough and permeable nature of gravel (D50 > 2 mm), together with the steep (reflective) beach face, provide efficient mechanisms of wave energy dissipation in the swash zone and provide a natural means of coastal defence. Despite their potential for shore protection very little is known about the response of these environments during high energetic wave conditions. Field measurements of sediment transport and hydrodynamics on coarse-grained beaches are difficult, because there are few instruments capable of taking direct measurements in an energetic swash zone in which large clasts are moving, and significant morphological changes occur within a short period of time. Remote sensing methods emerge in this context as the most appropriate solution for these types of field measurement. A new remote sensing method, based around a mid-range (~ 50 m) 2D laser-scanner was developed, which allows the collection of swash zone hydrodynamics (e.g., vertical and horizontal runup position, swash depth and velocity) and bed changes on wave-by-wave time scale. This instrument allowed the complete coverage of the swash zone on several coarse-grained beaches with a vertical accuracy of approximately 0.015 m and an average horizontal resolution of 0.07 m. The measurements performed with this new methodology are within the accuracy of traditional field techniques (e.g. video cameras, ultrasonic bed-level sensors or dGPS). Seven field experiments were performed between March 2012 and January 2014 on six different coarse-grained beaches (Loe Bar, Chesil, Slapton, Hayling Island, Westward Ho! and Seascale), with each deployment comprising the 2D laser-scanner together with complementary in-situ instrumentation (e.g., pressure transducer, ADV current meter). These datasets were used to explore the hydrodynamics and morphological response of the swash zone of these different environments under different energetic hydrodynamic regimes, ranging from positive, to zero, to negative freeboard regimes. With reference to the swash zone dynamics under storms with positive freeboard regimes (when runup was confined to the foreshore) it was found that extreme runup has an inverse relationship with the surf scaling parameter (=2Hs /gTptan2). The highest vertical runup excursions were found on the steepest beaches (PG beaches) and under long-period swell, while lower vertical runup excursions where linked to short-period waves and beaches with intermediate and dissipative surf zones, thus demonstrating that the contrasting degree of wave dissipation observed in the different types of surf zones is a key factor that control the extreme runup on coarse-grained beaches. Beaches respond morphologically to changes in wave conditions, water level and sediment supply. As coastal sediment stores, which reflect the terrestrial hydrological process balance, beaches are very sensitive to environmental change. However, controls on beach variability are not yet fully understood. In comparison to sand or mixed sand/gravel beaches, gravel beach response to environmental changes is muted. Low-energy gravel beach adjustments to external controls remain poorly understood. This research investigates gravel beach variation within a relatively low energy upland lake environment in mid-high latitudes (Loch Lomond). To assess the nature of the lake wave climate, waves were recorded throughout 1994 and statistical and spectral analysis performed. The wave climate is distinctive, characterised by small amplitude, high frequency waves and periods of calm. Water levels fluctuate and showed clear seasonal trends with bi-annual periods of rapid rise/fall. Water levels are a fundamental control on beach variability, both in rates of fluctuation and in that they provide the underlying control on the effects of waves. The research was largely field-based and gravel beach variability was examined with respect to morphological and sedimentological change and sediment budgets for two beaches were calculated. Fluvial sediment delivery was modelled from peak monthly stage. Cliff recession and beach morphology were surveyed to show highly variable longshore beach characteristics which are closely related to beach elevation, exposure and sediment supply. Sections of beach represented by individual profiles type showed profile types may persist from month to month. Sedimentology was examined for the sub-aerial and sub-aqueous beach into the offshore. Cross beach offshore fining was observed, with a clear abrupt limit to coarse sediment in the nearshore. Fluvial discharge exerts a significant control on beach development as it affects sediment entrainment and delivery, distribution and storage within the beach. Water level is also significant in sediment redistribution. The deltas are major sediment stores within the beach sediment budgets often for long time periods (years). At high water levels deltaic sediments are often below wave base and are therefore not entrained and transported. This limits sediment availability for beach morphological readjustment and shore defence. This research is important for the understanding of sediment-poor, low energy beach behaviour and response to changing environmental conditions. The research has implications for modelling lake gravel beach sediment transport and storage mechanisms. It also highlights the need for appropriate management strategies for lake coastal environments.

▼ The objectives of this research were to 1) determine the variability of fecal-indicator bacteria in Gulf of Mexico marine waters, 2) determine the effect of environmental variables on enterococci concentrations, 3) determine if beach sand at Holly Beach, LA was capable of acting as a reservoir for fecal-indicator bacteria, and 4) determine if a model could be developed to reduce the time it takes to issue a beach swim advisory. Fecal-indicator bacteria concentrations varied from year to year in historical data collected from a Gulf Coast beach. Afternoon fecal-indicator bacteria concentrations were consistently lower than morning concentrations, demonstrating daily variability. Environmental variables recorded from morning sampling events also varied from year to year and presented no clear connection to yearly fecal-indicator bacteria concentration variations. Beach sands contained enterococci (geometric mean of 43 ± 848 MPN per 100 g wet sand) and also provided enterococci the ability to persist and even regrow (geometric mean of 57 ± 1,541 MPN per 100 g wet sand). Laboratory experiments confirmed the ability of solar radiation to inactivate large concentrations of enterococci (>24,196 MPN per 100 mL) across a range of salinities (0, 5, 15, 20, 25 ppt) in as little as four hours, which explained the decrease in enterococci concentrations over the course of the day. Increased turbidity (70 and 140 NTU) prevented complete inactivation of enterococci, which partially explained why enterococci, although lower than morning samples, were still found in afternoon samples at coastal beaches. Experiments demonstrated that after solar inactivation, no appreciable reactivation of enterococci occurred overnight. An exponential decay model and a regression model were applied to predict enterococci concentrations along a Gulf Coast beach, although their use alone was not effective in issuing beach swim advisories. The decay coefficient (k) generated for the exponential decay model was 0.120 hr-1. The regression model found that enterococci were influenced by the variables year, salinity, water temperature, wind speed, total rainfall within 48 hours prior to sampling, sunny, weather, and mean tide level. However, the regression model only accounted for a small portion of variability (R2 = 0.20) in predicting enterococci concentrations.

Parks, playgrounds, trails, lakes and other public green and blue spaces are locally desirable land uses that provide recreation and open space opportunities in addition to various other environmental, social, health, and economic benefits. Access to recreation opportunities has been shown to have a substantial impact on individual and community health and well-being, especially in urban areas. Disparities in levels of access to recreation opportunities, whether in terms of age, race/ethnicity, income or other demographic or socioeconomic factors, represent an environmental justice concern. Level of access to recreation opportunities is based partially on the distribution of recreation opportunities. Assessing the level of environmental justice inherent in the distribution of recreation opportunities is, therefore, a valuable prerequisite for effective recreation planning and management. Assessment of results provides information for public leisure agencies that can help them allocate limited resources more equitably. Such assessments have, in the past, focused on measuring the degree of equity associated with the distribution of access to recreation opportunities. Multivariate linear regression analyses using the ordinary least squares (OLS) method typically have employed; however, these approaches fail to explore important local variations in the relationships among variables caused by spatial effects such as spatial dependence (spatial autocorrelation) and spatial heterogeneity (spatial non-stationarity) that can lead to biased estimation results. Thus, the equity of recreation opportunities ideally should be examined using specialized research methods that incorporate spatial data. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the utility of spatial statistical techniques for assessing the distribution of recreation opportunities within the framework of environmental justice. To achieve this, the level of access to and the degree of equity inherent in the distribution of public beaches in the Detroit Metropolitan Area (DMA) were assessed. Results indicated that spatial statistical techniques have the potential to serve as a useful tool not only to assess the distribution of recreation opportunities, but also to deal with spatial effects when measuring the degree of equity inherent in the distribution of access to public beaches in the DMA. Specifically, results indicated substantial regional disparities in access to public beaches resulting from spatial clustering of public beaches in the DMA. The objective of this dissertation is to measure the monetary values of public Great Lakes beaches using the travel cost approach. To decide which econometric model to use, Monte Carlo simulations were developed, and results showed that the nested logit model was robust and reliable. To collect beach use data, a two-stage survey of over 29,000 people was conducted from 2011 to 2012. A mail survey went out in 2011 to identify people who participated in beach recreation with a random sample from Michigan's driver license list. Respondents who said they visited a Great Lakes beach since June 1, 2010 were invited to a follow-up web survey about trips to public Great Lakes beaches in the summer of 2011. A repeated nested logit model with a participation hurdle was estimated for the day trip data. The estimated beach recreation participation rate was 58% for adults living in Lower Peninsula of Michigan, and an estimated 20.9 million day trips were taken by Michigan adults to public Great Lakes beaches in the summer of 2011. The value of access to a public beach for a day trip was estimated to be 32-39 per person per trip in 2011 dollars. Access to all Lake Michigan public beaches, in Michigan, was estimated to be worth over 400 million per season for day trips for adults living in Lower Peninsula of Michigan. To value long trips of four nights or more, a model was developed allowing people to visit combinations of single and multiple sites on a trip. The resulting values were about 53 per person per beach day for access to a site for a trip of four nights or longer. The more common approach of using the main destination for multi-site trips has larger welfare measures compared to the approach permitting combinations of multiple sites to be visited.

▼ The stability of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) is a key problem because of its potential effect on global sea level and climate. Some geologic evidence suggests that the ice sheet has collapsed in the past, which, if correct, implies that future disintegration is possible. Isolation of the mechanism(s) that have affected WAIS behavior since the last glacial maximum (LGM) may yield information about factors that control it today. Previous studies have indicated thatrecession of the WAIS from the LGM position occurred in the middle to late Holocene. However, the data come fiom points too far south to assess accurately the timing and cause of the early phase of deglaciation. Reconstruction of ice retreat in the Ross Sea Embayment since the LGM relies heavily on the development of relative sea-level curves from raised beaches. In turn, the accuracy of these curves depends on the manner in which the beaches fornl and in which organic material is incorporated. The present study has two main objectives. The first is to determine the processes that formed beaches now uplifted along the northern Scott Coast. The second is to obtain radiocarbon samples, which will determine the ages of the raised beaches, and aid in relative sea-level interpretations. My results suggest that stonn waves formed most beaches in the study areas. Moreover, nearly every wave-formed beach ridge is a single-storm deposit. These conclusions, at least for the southern part of the field area, support the idea that Holocene sea-ice extent was less than it is today. This is in agreement with glacial geologic and faunal proxies that suggest that temperatures were generally warmer and sea ice was less extensive during the mid-to-late Holocene. The radiocarbon data fiom this study have led to the first identification of pre- Holocene beach deposits along the coast of the Ross Sea. Every sample recovered from Cape Ross predates the last glacial maximum, and additional old samples come fiom Spike Cape and Inexpressible Island. There are two hypotheses to explain the pre- Holocene material. One is that Holocene beach sediments overlie a core of preserved older deposits. The other is that the entire set of beaches predates the last glacial maximum and that Holocene deposits are absent. It is not possible to distinguish conclusively between these two hypotheses at this time. However, these new data show that undated beaches along the Antarctic coast can no longer be assumed to be Holocene in age. Moreover, the presence of older beach deposits complicates the process of reconstructing Holocene relative sea-level curves and reaffirms the need for detailed dating and stratigraphic analysis of beach ridges. Este trabalho tem como propósito fazer uma caracterização dos diversos aspectos que compõem a paisagem das praias de Tambaú e Manaíra no município de João Pessoa/PB, onde são enfatizados o caráter natural e antropogênico que influenciam na dinâmica costeira como subsídio ao planejamento da área. As praias estudadas possuem uma extensão de aproximadamente 3.000 m e localizam-se num trecho totalmente urbanizado, entre o final da Av. Epitácio Pessoa e o final da Av. Flávio Ribeiro Coutinho. Estas praias constituem uma amostra de como se comporta o litoral paraibano, onde são observados trechos que apresentam problemas erosivos associados à dinâmica natural e a ocupação urbana desordenada. A abordagem teórico-filosófica apoiou-se tanto nos métodos das ciências sociais, quanto nos das ciências naturais. Já a metodologia utilizada no trabalho foi composta de três etapas, relacionadas entre si: a pesquisa bibliográfica e cartográfica que forneceu um suporte técnico/teórico fundamental ao desenvolvimento da pesquisa; a etapa de campo, que forneceu informações e dados necessários a respeito do local em questão; e as atividades laboratoriais e de gabinete que foram fundamentais para tratar, compilar e analisar todos os dados e informações coletados anteriormente. No primeiro capítulo deste trabalho, foi feita uma discussão sobre as novas tendências na teoria geomorfológica bem como uma discussão sobre a dinâmica da paisagem costeira. No segundo capítulo, foi feito um levantamento teórico dos diversos elementos físicos que compõem a paisagem costeira da área em questão. No terceiro capítulo, observou-se que desde a década de 40, com a abertura da Av. Epitácio Pessoa, as praias de Tambaú e Manaíra começaram a ser ocupadas, no entanto, a partir da década de 70, período em que foi construído o hotel Tambaú, o processo de urbanização desordenado intensificou-se, alterando a dinâmica costeira das praias de Tambaú e Manaíra. Os dados coletados em campo, presentes no quarto capítulo deste trabalho, mostram uma maior dinâmica caracterizada por uma intensa variação morfológica durante o período estudado, na praia de Manaíra; já a praia de Tambaú, apresentou sedimentação durante todo o período analisado. Segundo o parâmetro de Dean, as praias estudadas variam dos estágios reflexivo a intermediário (Tambaú) e intermediário (Manaíra). Contudo, as variações na linha de costa, evidenciadas pela superposição de fotografias aéreas e imagens de satélite, apontaram para um recuo da linha de costa frente ao continente na praia de Tambaú e um avanço de linha de costa para o setor (4) da praia de Manaíra.

▼ Beach water quality criteria are determined by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and water quality advisories or closings are issued based on fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) at the beaches. Understanding of sources, fate and transport of FIB at a beach environment is of economic and social interest for public users, beach managers, policy makers and scientists. This is a complex problem and it is a multidisciplinary issue by nature. Scientists have generally taken a reductionist approach to tackle complex environmental issues. However, as alluded by Gallagher and Appenzeller (1999) and adopted by Boehm (2000), many complex systems are best interpreted using an "integrative agenda". Sources and transport of bacteria at a beach environment has been studied by Boehm (2012) in this context. Results from such study indicate that large scale feature is best interpreted with information about small-scale interactions. In this dissertation, I examined the sources of fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) in ten Lake Michigan beaches. In depth studies were performed at one study site (Bradford Beach) to investigate possible sources of FIB, including groundwater-lake water interactions and runoff infiltrating through the sand. The impact of hydrological and geophysical factors that are associated with formation of standing water were also investigated, including the potential of FIB reservoirs in the sand matrix to serve as a sink and source of bacteria at the beach environment. In order to better understand bacterial association with particles at a large scale, I examined the small scale interactions between bacteria and particles by developing a new non-invasive optical technique and applying the technique to assess attachment of bacteria to sand particles in a sheared fluid simulating condition found in the surf zone. Finally, I used knowledge obtained from the understanding of small scale interactions to interpret results acquired from a statistical model and time series applied to large scale features at Bradford Beach and Atwater Beach. This work is relevant to the study of sources and transport of bacteria not only in large lakes, but in rivers and oceans. The results also extend to the investigation of other microbial pollutants and their association with particles in a water body and the potential to track the transport of these pollutants in sediments, air and water. ▼ Alongshore variability in topography (i.e. height differences in bed level along the coast) can exist on both natural and nourished beaches. An important question prior to implementation of a nourishment project is how alongshore variability is going to evolve and, related to this variability, the effect of the project upon swimmer safety. In this thesis observations and analysis of the alongshore variability in nearshore topography of a nourished Dutch beach are discussed. Three and a half years of nearly monthly measurements with a jetski survey system and GPS backpack show in detail how the topography of the beach changed after installation of a large nourishment. The results show that the first period just after implementation of the nourishment showed similar magnitudes of variability than the total period investigated, and no apparent effect of the nourishment shape on the variability could be discerned. Moreover, changes in topographic variability were found to be much slower than previous observations, f.i. at the US east coast or Australian east coast. The formation process of alongshore variability is examined in more detail by examining field measurements of an Australian natural beach and using conceptual numerical modelling. Special attention herein is paid to the effect that different sea states (swell vs. wind sea) have upon flow circulation and the formation of topographic variability in the nearshore, to put the results in the thesis into the context of the Dutch wind sea wave climate. This analysis has shown that the typical Dutch wind sea wave climate is likely to result in slower formation of alongshore variability due to the short wave period (the time between consecutive waves) and high wave angles (angle at which it waves approach shore) in this wave field. Very low frequency flow velocity oscillations can be forced by variations in wave height and are related to transient rip currents. Analyses in the thesis show that these oscillations are typically small in the Dutch wave climate. However, the steep profile of a nourished beach could enhance the magnitude of these motions, such that substantial fluctuations in current can be present at a Dutch nourished beach. ▼ Sandy beaches are the largest coastal ecosystem on earth, covering 70% of all continental margins. As more people interact directly with beaches than with any other type of shoreline worldwide, beaches are of huge social and cultural importance. Sandy beaches have a multitude of ecological but also economic functions: they are important nursery areas for a variety of marine species and function as natural coastal defence. Beaches are also highly valuable as socio-economic areas since they are key components of many tourist destinations and are important for coastal fisheries. These activities are causing a direct anthropogenic impact and put, together with natural impacts such as sea level rise and beach erosion, a severe pressure on the sandy beach ecosystem. To preserve beaches and their important ecosystem functions, management and conservation have become critical issues, especially in the light of burgeoning global population growth, demographic shifts towards the coast, and economic prosperity. However, to develop a valuable management strategy, sound knowledge of all the aspects of the beach ecosystem is important. As studies on sandy beaches are however poorly represented in scientific literature, there are some critical gaps in basic ecological information. Although patterns on sandy beaches are well-studied, the functional beach ecosystem is largely unknown. Food web dynamics, species interactions and energetic linkages on sandy beaches are barely studied and ecosystem-wide processes as nutrient cycling, cross-system nutrient ﬂuxes, productivity and connectivity among metapopulations on different sandy beaches are undescribed. An overview of the current knowledge on the sandy beach ecosystem is presented in chapter 1. Both the physical characteristics and biological features of sandy beaches are reviewed. In addition, important beach functions and threats are discussed and an overview of current beach management is given. In chapter 2, a modelling approach is applied to examine the role of abiotic and biotic factors in clarifying the distribution and zonation patterns of sandy beach macrobenthos in Western Europe. The seven most important and abundant species were selected, including the amphipods Bathyporeia pilosa and B. sarsi, the isopods Eurydice pulchra and E. affinis and the polychaetes Scolelepis squamata, Nephtys cirrosa and Eteone longa. Species-specific regression models were developed, taking into account abiotic and biotic factors as explanatory variables and the selected species’ distribution as response variable. The variance in the model could in part be explained by the abiotic factors and in part by the biotic factors. The two abiotic variables used (median grain size of the sediment and emersion time) did not exclusively explain the variance in species distribution and biotic interactions were suggested to explain up to one third of the variance in species distribution accounted for by the model. ▼ Embayed beaches differ from open coast beaches due to the control exerted by headlands, leading to alongshore gradients in wave height, surfzone width and beach state. Circulation and morphodynamic behaviour of embayed beaches are poorly understood. This study involves observations at three embayed beaches around Sydney, Australia. Methods involve Lagrangian observations of currents and bathymetric surveys.At Whale Beach (600 m long), Lagrangian observations of an entire embayment, including headland rip currents, are presented. Headland geometry and wave direction were found to influence rip current trajectories, and degree of bathymetric non-uniformity correlated with current velocities. Surfzone exit rates increased along the beach from the protected headland to the exposed end.At Bondi Beach (850 m long), observations of morphodynamic response to storm-groups over a three week period are presented. Offshore significant wave heights reached 5.6 m, with a 10-day average >3 m. A mega-rip developed at the exposed headland, while the protected end maintained a low-tide-terrace. Alongshore non-uniformity was found to decrease near the shoreline, and increase in the outer-surfzone and nearshore.At Shelly Beach (2.3 km long), the rip current hazard was investigated, testing the efficacy of 'float' and 'swim parallel' strategies. Human subjects entered three rip channels with Lagrangian measurements of background flow. Swimming parallel was found to be a shorter duration strategy, with lower failure rate. However both strategies failed in some instances and neither can be recommended as a sole preference.Finally, all data are analysed to investigate the degree of bathymetric control on very low frequency (~10 min) current variability due to surfzone eddies. A classification scheme is introduced ranging from: (i) strong bathymetric control where currents exhibit high mean velocities, with velocity pulsation or rip cell oscillations, to (ii) no bathymetric control where randomly directed surfzone eddies occur on planar bars. This study broadens understanding of several aspects of embayed beach dynamics. In particular, it demonstrates that alongshore wave-height and beach state gradients on embayed beaches will force alongshore changes in: (i) current velocities, trajectories and variability; (ii) cross-shore exchange; (iii) morphodynamic response to storms; and (iv) the level of hazard to bathers. ▼ Populations in coastal areas are growing at a rate far exceeding that of other areas, resulting in escalating pressures on coastal areas around the world. Sandy beaches make up over 70% of the world coastlines, comprising some of the most highly sought after areas for human activities. Consequently, sandy beaches are some of the most vulnerable habitats to the effects of urbanisation, with beaches now threatened by a wide range of anthropogenic practices. Ghost crabs are widely used as ecological indicators of ecosystem health on sandy beaches, but have rarely been studied on beaches within large urban centres. In this thesis, ghost crab burrow densities were used to assess human impacts on beaches in the highly urbanised estuary, Sydney Harbour. Across 38 beaches in the harbour, mechanical beach cleaning frequency was found to be the most influential predictor of ghost crab distributions in the area, with burrow counts reduced on the most frequently cleaned beaches and highest burrow counts found on beaches that were cleaned no more than three times per week. Mechanical cleaning was associated with the volume of wrack accumulated onshore, with frequently cleaned beaches supporting significantly lower volumes of wrack then beaches that were cleaned less frequently. To examine how organic subsidies on sandy beaches affect crab behaviour, I experimentally manipulated the availability of organic marine matter (wrack and carrion). Ghost crabs demonstrated no short term response to either subsidy (measured by the initiation of new burrows near food source), while vertebrate scavengers demonstrated a rapid response to carrion subsidies only. The presence of vertebrate scavengers in treatment plots reduced the fossorial behaviour of ghost crabs, suggesting biological interactions among invertebrates and vertebrates. The arrival of marine subsidies to sandy beaches facilitates the exchange of resources between the marine and terrestrial zone. Given that these systems can rely heavily on this resource exchange any alteration in the natural supply of organic marine matter, e.g. more frequent beach cleaning in response to urbanisation, could have far reaching implications for both zones. ▼ Ohio’s Lake Erie shoreline, situated along the high-energy south-central Lake Erie coast, is characterized as a sediment-starved, wave-dominated erosional coastal system. Harbor-protecting structures installed in the early 1900s have fragmented the littoral system, which trends from W to E across the area, trapping bluff-derived sediments on their up-drift sides. The studied depositional harbor headlands of Lake County (i.e. Headlands Beach) and Ashtabula County (i.e. Walnut Beach and Conneaut Beach) are located along a ~65 km stretch of the south-central Lake Erie shoreline. Given many shared similarities and similar degrees of exposure to lake-level variations, winter-ice covers, and storm conditions (with associated surge levels, waves, and strong coastal currents), the geologic and anthropogenic distinctions between the sites need to be evaluated as potential drivers of coastal change. Historic shoreline positions, mapped from georeferenced aerial photographs, provide a chronology to evaluate the recent geomorphic evolution of these headlands with respect to these physical forcing parameters. Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) data reveal changes in prograding clinoform (i.e. preserved foreshore deposits) geometry, attesting to the inherent dynamics of headland beaches, which have been impacted by episodic erosion and deposition at decadal timescales. Multiple regression analysis of net beach growth, derived from shoreline positions, versus lake level and ice cover suggest that high lake levels are more strongly associated with beach growth overall; this is surprising given variable sediment sources and beach compositions from site to site. Beach growth during elevated lake levels are likely attributed to increased sediment fluxes from sourcing bluffs. Ice cover appears to play a secondary, yet important role in headland evolution as both an erosional and depositional mechanism capable of entraining course-grained sediments and reshaping shorelines. The design of harbor structures influences sedimentation at the headlands by dictating the bounds of beach form. Changes in the rates of decadal beach progradation are associated with distinct changes in breakwater orientation, which represent an intrinsic control on the distribution of accommodation-space distribution at the shoreline.
