▼ This dissertation focuses on two types of impact studies: one is related to site developments; the other examines the socioeconomic effects of
mileage fees. More specifically, in the first part, the
link distribution percentage and
special generator methods for performing traffic impact analysis are compared and enhanced; and in the second part, the impacts of adopting a
mileage fee in Florida are assessed. In Florida, both the
link distribution percentage and
special generator methods are used to conduct traffic impact analysis. However, there is no systematic research to show whether these two methods produce similar results or if one outperforms the other. This dissertation describes an empirical study that compares these two methods. Based on the study, these two methods are observed to produce fairly consistent estimates of traffic impacts caused by the chosen hypothetical scenarios. As the
link distribution percentage approach is easier to implement, this dissertation recommends this less cumbersome approach. However, both of the above mentioned approaches estimate development trips on each
link from the path flow or origin-destination (O-D) specific
link flow
distribution. Since these two flow distributions may not be uniquely determined, an open question remains regarding the selection of a particular flow
distribution as the basis for traffic impact studies. This dissertation suggests using the mean of all the path or O-D specific user equilibrium solutions as the basis for traffic impact studies. The second part of the dissertation examines the impacts of implementing
mileage fees in Florida. Four different
mileage fee structures are tested. The result shows that the distributional impacts of the revenue-neutral fee are negligible. However, flat
fees are found to be regressive at higher rates. In contrast, step fee, a two-level tariff structure is found to be less regressive.
Fees based on vehicle fuel efficiency and vehicle type are found to be environmentally friendly, but areas regressive as flat
fees. This dissertation suggests that a complex
mileage fee structure is needed to balance the spatial
distribution of the impacts, reduce the regressive nature of the fee, generate sufficient revenue, protect the environment, and achieve other objectives simultaneously. ( en )

▼ The first part of this dissertation examines the trade-offs involved in dual sourcing in a supply chain. Although splitting procurement orders may increase shipping costs as a result of diseconomies of scale, dual sourcing may offer certain benefits that can more than offset these costs. We consider a single-stage inventory replenishment model that includes two delivery modes: a cheaper, less reliable mode, and another, more expensive but perfectly reliable mode. The high-reliability mode is only utilized in replenishment intervals in which the less-reliable mode's lead time exceeds a certain value. This permits substituting the high-reliability mode for safety stock, to some degree. We characterize optimal replenishment decisions, and potential benefits of simultaneously using two delivery modes.

▼ Due to the declining purchasing power of fuel tax revenue, the Highway Trust Fund is insufficient to operate and maintain the surface transportation system in the U.S. Alternative sources of revenue, other than the fuel tax, should be considered to address the insolvency of the funding system.
Mileage fees and value pricing have long been attractive options to researchers and decision-makers, but they often raise equity concerns. This paper aims to design and evaluate equitable and progressive distance-based user charge policies, and focuses specifically on income-based fee rate structures. Three variable-rate vehicle-miles traveled (
VMT) fee scenarios with respect to income are introduced and all policy scenarios are tested with a statewide transportation model in Maryland. Results show that income-based
VMT fees can well protect lower-income households while generating more revenue. However, a standard fee structure based on Ramsey pricing does not work as well as the fixed-percentage incremental fee structure. The latter is progressive across all income groups while ensuring that equity and revenue goals are met.

▼ This thesis introduces a high-resolution light detection and ranging (LIDAR) sensor system-on-a-chip (SoC) that performs sub-centimeter ranging precision and maximally 124-meter ranging distance. With off-chip connected avalanche photodiodes (APDs), the time-of-flight (ToF) are resolved through 31×1 time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) channels. Embedded time-to-digital converters (TDCs) support 52-ps time resolution and 14-bit dynamic range. A novel injection-locked oscillator (ILO) based TDC are proposed to minimize the power of fine TDC clock
distribution, and improve time precision. The global PVT variation among ILO clock
distribution is calibrated by an on-chip phase-looked-loop (PLL) that assures a reliable counting performance over wide operating range. The proposed LIDAR sensor is designed, fabricated, and tested in the 65nm CMOS technology. Whole SoC consumes 37mW and each TDC channel consumes 788μW at nominal operation. The proposed TDC design achieved single-shot precision of 38.5 ps, channel uniformity of 14 ps, and DNL/INL of 0.56/1.56 LSB, respectively. The performance of proposed ILO-TDC makes it an excellent candidate for global counting TCSPC in automotive LIDAR.

▼ This study compared the socioeconomic impacts of three market-based instruments: gasoline tax,
mileage fee and tradable credit schemes, for mobility management. The National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) data for 2009 was used for the analysis. A hypothetical case study where FDOT intends to reduce the total vehicle miles by 15% in Florida was targeted. A deterministic household travel demand function was developed and used to examine the socioeconomic impact of the three market-based instruments. It was found that all three instruments are capable of achieving the hypothetical 15%reduction of total travel demand in Florida. However, they generate different amounts of revenue and impose different socioeconomic impacts on Florida residents. Gasoline tax and
mileage fee schemes charge travelers more to discourage their travels to achieve the control target. Consequently, the government receives much more revenue. At the same time, the schemes hurt residents more and do more harm to the poor than the rich. The tradable credit scheme generates the least revenue for the government but has a less regressive impact on residents. Secondly,we assumed that the household travel demand function is uncertain and conducted similar analysis to determine the socioeconomic impact of the three instruments. The three policy instruments were all capable of reducing the
VMT by 15% on
average. However, the gasoline tax and
mileage fee policies were found to have a lower success rate and the revenue generated was variable. For the tradable credit scheme, the success rate was found to be 100% and the revenue generated fixed; the socio economic impact was found to be similar to that obtained under the deterministic travel demand. ▼ In a Doubly-fed Induction
Generator (DFIG) wind energy conversion system, the rotor of a wound rotor induction
generator is connected to the grid via a partial scale ac/ac power electronic converter which controls the rotor frequency and speed.
In this research, detailed models of the DFIG wind energy conversion system with Sinusoidal Pulse-Width Modulation (SPWM) scheme and Optimal Pulse-Width Modulation (OPWM) scheme for the power electronic converter are developed in detail in PSCAD/EMTDC. As the computer simulation using the detailed models tends to be computationally extensive, time consuming and even sometimes not practical in terms of speed, two modified approaches (switching-function modeling and
average-value modeling) are proposed to reduce the simulation execution time. The results demonstrate that the two proposed approaches reduce the simulation execution time while the simulation results remain close to those obtained using the detailed model simulation.

Special Activity
Generator; while sports facilities are well studied, minor league stadiums have not been the focus of significant research. My dissertation uses a sequential explanatory mixed methodology to answer whether minor league baseball stadiums are successful as
Special Activity Generators. I first use a quantitative analysis of sixteen stadiums built around the year 2000 that shows a large effect for the areas around the stadium compared to the rest of the city. However, that growth is created by concentrating redevelopment, not creating new activity. Two case studies clarify that the stadiums were critical to the observed redevelopment efforts, but also highly the need for thorough planning and collocated amenities prior to construction in order to maximize the results from the public investment.

▼ With the high penetration of wind power in the electricity networks, the power system stability issues caused by modern wind turbines have become important. Nowadays, there are several different wind turbine system configurations in the market. In this thesis, the focus is on the direct-drive permanent-magnet synchronous generator wind energy conversion system (WECS) as one of the robust solutions for the large wind turbine applications due to the low demand maintenance and higher reliability because of the gearbox elimination. However, it has been revealed that using direct-driven permanent-magnet synchronous generator (DDPMSG)-based WECSs can cause fluctuations in output power due to soft drive-train system which may lead to instability due to the interaction with the power system inter-area oscillations or the WECS itself. Hence, the control design of a DDPMSG-based WECS has become a significant research topic and different control strategies have been proposed recently. In this thesis, the dynamic behavior of the direct-driven wind turbine coupled to the generator-connected converter is studied. Frequency-domain model of a conventional AC/DC boost converter is upgraded to a PMSG-connected converter where it is found that the q-channel input impedance of the generator has negative electrical damping behavior in the low-frequency range. The interconnected system stability is evaluated based on the impedance ratio method where it is found that the wind turbine coupled to the converter under the open-loop condition is inherently unstable due to the negative resistor like behavior of the converter. The transfer functions of the open-loop model are used to design a cascaded control scheme in which the current control is considered as an inner loop and the DC-link voltage is employed as the outer loop. A non-minimum phase behavior of the current control to the DC-link voltage is analysed in detail and the output voltage controller is tuned for the worst-case scenario. The stability assessment of the closed-loop current control wind turbine generator (WTG)coupled converter is studied, and it is concluded that the interconnected system can be stable as the q-channel input impedance has a high magnitude under a fast-current control loop. The control-to-DC-link voltage transfer function of WTG-coupled converter under the closed-loop current control is utilized to investigate the stability of the interconnected system under the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) mode and the controlled power (CP) mode. It is revealed that under the MPPT mode the same fast DC-link voltage regulation that utilized for the PMSG-connected converter can stably work as there are no RHP-zeros in the control loop. However, when the operation mode switches to the controlled power mode, the WTG-coupled converter becomes unstable because a pair of RHP-zeros appears in the control loop and they impose limitations on the DC-link voltage closed-loop bandwidth. Therefore, in this study, a guideline for tuning PI controller parameters is developed to…

▼ Funding transportation projects in California presents a difficult policy problem for the state, as the current taxation mechanisms used are insufficient. The policy question at hand for California decision makers is: What viable transportation funding alternatives exist for implementation statewide to supplement the currently lacking funds? To answer this policy dilemma, this thesis delves into available literature and performs a Criteria Alternative Matrix analysis to evaluate three policy options: Public-Private Toll Roads,
Mileage Fees, and a State Fuel Sales Tax. The four evaluative criteria used in this thesis to assess the practicality of the alternatives are Low Administrative Costs, Equity, Sustainability, and Internalizing Negative Externalities. Based on these criteria and their given weights and ranking, two alternatives arose as feasible policy options. As a result of the research and analysis provided herein, I recommend California State decision makers pursue implementing both Public-Private Toll Roads and a State Fuel Sales Tax as short and long term policy solutions to California???s roadway dire straits.

▼ Motor fuel taxes have been collected as a principal source of highway funding for close to a century. They account for approximately two thirds of all the highway user
fees and about half of all highway expenditures. Federal fuel taxes have not kept pace with the inflation in general and increasing traffic demand and resulting construction, maintenance and operation costs of the transportation assets in particular. Lack of political will, combined with rising anti-tax sentiment among the populace, has kept the federal tax level not only well below its initial intents, but also at a unsustainable level in future.
Mileage based user
fees are possibly an alternative to the fuel taxes, which have been the main mechanism for funding the transportation system.
Mileage based user
fees have been successfully utilized in many parts of the world with glowing results. Germany‟s “TollCollect”, a quasi government enterprise has utilized GPS technology in collecting the users‟ fee from the truck operators. The system has been a financial engine providing much needed funding for many major transportation projects. Oregon Department of Transportation, in a federally co-funded pilot project, examined the practicality of the
mileage based user fee collection at the fuel pumps. According to the Oregon study, there are not any major technical difficulties in
mileage based user fee collection at the pump. Study participants (general motorist) did not express any objection to the
mileage based user fee collection. This dissertation evaluates revenue impacts of several pricing policies including: Current per gallon fuel taxes, conversion to a
mileage based user fee, time of day user fee application, iv area type user fee and congestion priced user
fees. State of Florida‟s years 2015-2035 fuel revenue forecast is used as a case study. A model is constructed to estimate annual vehicle miles travelled for the analyses period. Fuel efficiencies, current per gallon fuel taxes and their corresponding
mileage-based user fee equivalents are the input to a financial model developed for comparisons. Results demonstrate that decrease in fuel revenues due to vehicles fuel efficiency improvements can be offset by replacing current per gallon fuel taxes with a
mileage-based user fee. Pricing the user fee according to area type, roadway classification, time of day and congestion level can not only generate more revenues but also assist in demand management.

▼ An average-value model of a rotating rectifier circuit in a brushless excitation system is set forth, where a detailed simulation is required to extract the essential averaged-model parameters using numerical averaging. In the proposed approach, a synchronous machine model with saturation and cross saturation and an arbitrary rotor network representation that uses a voltage-behind-reactance representation for the field winding of the main machine is proposed. This allows the field winding to be represented as branches in a circuit solver, permitting straightforward simulation with connected circuitry. Also a brushless exciter model is introduced to be compatible with the averaged-model, where the exciter armature windings are represented using a voltage-behind-reactance formulation. The resulting average-value model is verified in time domain against detailed simulation, and its validity is demonstrated in all rectifier modes of operation.

▼ In this research, new methods to estimate vehicle miles traveled (
VMT) for lower functional classes of roadways are introduced. The methods are based on the inherent correlation between
VMT and roadway densities in each roadway class. This research found that the relationship between VMTs of different functional classes of roadways has to do with roadway typological structures according to functional classifications. To begin with, the analytical relationship between local
VMT and collector road
VMT was derived by assuming a grid network. The purpose was to find key relevant terms (basically roadway densities) in the relationship, which were used to define the format of regression equations. Next, the author proposed two types of regression models, one using density ratios as explanatory variables and the other using logarithmic value of roadway densities. Several simulation networks were set up to verify those proposed models using community road patterns categorized according to three different measures. The author found that the proposed models worked well for medium and high connectivity networks, but they were inadequate for simulating low connectivity networks. Moreover, the equation using logarithmic terms provided a better result in every numerical test. Next, the author verified the proposed regression equations in real situations. The results showed that the proposed regression models work very well in estimating urban local
VMT of Minneapolis (grid networks). However, the relative error was much bigger in estimating local
VMT of Bryan/College Station (non-grid networks). Finally, the author introduced a practical application procedure and also discussed the possible sources of errors in this study. This research introduces a potentially more efficient method (logarithm) for estimating
VMT for lower functional classes of roadways.

Development of infrastructure is fundamental to manage, but also to stimulate urbanization and development of cities. In 2012, an agreement called stockholmsförhandlingen, was made where the state, Stockholm County Council and four municipalities were to decide how a new subway should be financed and how the supply of housing in the Stockholm region were to be solved. It is not a new finding that infrastructure projects require large investments but in April 2017 a new possibility of financing these kinds of projects occurred. This opportunity makes it…

▼ As the Moore’s Law continues to drive IC technology, power delivery has become one
of the most difficult design challenges. Two of the major components in power delivery are
DC-DC converters and power
distribution networks, both of which are time-consuming to
simulate and characterize using traditional approaches. In this dissertation, we propose a
complete set of solutions to efficiently analyze DC-DC converters and power
distribution
networks by finding a perfect balance between efficiency and accuracy.
To tackle the problem, we first present a novel envelope following method based on
a numerically robust time-delayed phase condition to track the envelopes of circuit states
under a varying switching frequency. By adopting three fast simulation techniques, our
proposed method achieves higher speedup without comprising the accuracy of the results.
The robustness and efficiency of the proposed method are demonstrated using several DCDC
converter and oscillator circuits modeled using the industrial standard BSIM4 transistor
models. A significant runtime speedup of up to 30X with respect to the conventional
transient analysis is achieved for several DC-DC converters with strong nonlinear switching
characteristics.
We then take another approach,
average modeling, to enhance the efficiency of analyzing
DC-DC converters. We proposed a multi-harmonic model that not only predicts the
DC response but also captures the harmonics of arbitrary degrees. The proposed full-order
model retains the inductor current as a state variable and accurately captures the circuit
dynamics even in the transient state. Furthermore, by continuously monitoring state variables,
our model seamlessly transitions between continuous conduction mode and discontinuous
conduction mode. The proposed model, when tested with a system decoupling
technique, obtains up to 10X runtime speedups over transistor-level simulations with a maximum output voltage error that never exceeds 4%.
Based on the multi-harmonic averaged model, we further developed the small-signal
model that provides a complete characterization of both DC averages and higher-order
harmonic responses. The proposed model captures important high-frequency overshoots
and undershoots of the converter response, which are otherwise unaccounted for by the
existing techniques. In two converter examples, the proposed model corrects the misleading
results of the existing models by providing the truthful characterization of the overall
converter AC response and offers important guidance for converter design and closed-loop
control.
To address the problem of time-consuming simulation of power
distribution networks,
we present a partition-based iterative method by integrating block-Jacobi method with
support graph method. The former enjoys the ease of parallelization, however, lacks a
direct control of the numerical properties of the produced partitions. In contrast, the latter
operates on the maximum spanning tree of the circuit graph, which is optimized for
fast numerical convergence, but is…

▼ The next generation of bioenergy crops will probably be grown on marginal lands. Prairie cordgrass (Spartina pectinata
Link) is well suited to marginal land that is not well-suited for conventional crop production. Prairie cordgrass is a tall (1-3 m), rhizomatous, C4 perennial grass, native to North America and tolerant of environmental stresses such as salinity and water fluctuations. Developing prairie cordgrass as an energy crop requires genomic information such as genomic size and ploidy level. This species is well known as a polyploid species comprising three ploidy levels of tetraploid (2n = 40), hexaploids (2n = 60), and octaploids (2n = 80) with base chromosome number of x = 10. By using flow cytometry, cytogeographic
distribution of prairie cordgrass has been investigated throughout U.S. Across sampling areas, the tetraploid populations extend from the East North Central to the New England regions in U.S., while the octaploid cytotypes were mostly distributed in the west North Central regions; overlapped regions of tetraploids and octaploids were found in both the west North Central (IA and KS) and west South Central (KS) regions. The hexaploid cytotype was found in one mixed population (4x + 6x) occurring in Illinois. Polyploids often possess novel traits, such as changes in flowering time, cell size, and biomass. An increase in polyploidy resulted in a greater variability of morphological expression in mixed population (4x + 6x) occurring in Illinois. Substantial differences in the flowering time, stomatal size, and aboveground biomass were observed between tetraploids and hexaploids. The presence of ploidy mixtures in natural populations of prairie cordgrass offers unique opportunities for studying the formation and establishment of polyploidy under natural conditions considered as an ultimate step in plant evolution.

The subject of the thesis was the modernization of an electrical control in an old glue board compactor. The device was earlier relay-controlled, and now that was replaced with a new programmable controller. No drawings of the device were available, so comprehensive technical documentation was also drawn up.
The work included the choice of the logic suitable for the purpose of use and programming. The touch panel was added to the system. It was decided to buy the logic of Siemens Simatic S7-1200 series and the operation panel of the same series. TIA Portal programming software was used to program them.
CADS software by Kymdata was used for planning and for the documentation of new electrical connections. The software was used to draw up the circuit diagrams of all electric systems as well as the layout pictures of the positions of new devices. It was also used for making the necessary tables, component lists, I/O lists and other technical material related to technical documentation.
The result was a thorough plan for the electrical modernization of the glue board compactor. On the basis of the comprehensive documentation, the installation in practise will be easy to implement later regarding both the purchase of accessories and installation.

▼ Purpose: The ability to drive has been shown in
countless studies to have a positive effect on an individual's
quality of life and self-worth. Driving cessation has shown to have
the opposite effect. Most states within the US, and some other
countries, allow for some form of driving licensure with the aid of
bioptic telescope spectacles (BTS). BTS consist of a small
telescope, fit monocularly, and mounted in the upper portion of a
distance prescription lens. The telescope is used for distance
spotting tasks such as road signs and traffic lights while driving.
There have been previous studies which have investigated the
driving exposure of this unique driving population. These previous
studies have mainly used self-report of miles driven as their
collection method, but the accuracy of this method is unclear. The
purpose of this study was to compare estimates of self-reported
mileage driven with estimates obtained using naturalistic recording
in bioptic drivers' own cars. Methods: Visual acuity (logMAR
charts), contrast sensitivity (Pelli-Robson or Mars charts), age,
and sex were collected from clinic records at the Ohio State
University College of Optometry. A modified version of the Driving
Habits Questionnaire was administered in person. A
commercially-available in-car recording system with video and GPS
capability was installed in subjects' cars and driving was recorded
for one to three months. Estimates of weekly
mileage and trips
obtained using the questionnaire and the recording system were
compared to assess concordance. Results: Ten licensed Ohio bioptic
drivers (six male) were included. Mean (±SD) age was 53±20 years.
Mean binocular logMAR visual acuity was 0.68 ± 0.14, or
approximately 20/100. Mean contrast sensitivity was 1.44 ± 0.13.
Self-reported weekly
mileage ranged from 1 to 800 miles per week
(264 ± 252), and recorded
mileage ranged from 5.8 to 842.6 (244 ±
298). There was a strong correlation between estimates from the two
methods (Spearman correlation = 0.70, P = 0.025).Conclusion:
Self-reported estimates of bioptic driving
mileage were generally
well correlated with estimates obtained from in-car recordings in
this small sample of bioptic drivers. These findings have
implications for the use of self-reported methods in adjusting for
driving exposure in studies of driving safety. It is likely that
both objective and subjective measurements may have a role in the
determination of driving exposure for studies of driving
safety.

▼ Feeder Terminal Unit (FTU) is one of the most important equipment in
Distribution Automation System (DAS). In order to achieve self-management and auto-healing functions for
distribution systems, the function of traditional FTU in DAS and Smart Grid (SG) need to be upgraded. Therefore, a smart FTU (SFTU) is designed in this thesis and its prototype is also implemented. The embedded system, multiple communication interfaces and database are designed and integrated into the proposed SFTU. The power quality data and the statuses of Fault Indicators (FIs) in the feeder can be acquired and be saved to the database subsequently. When faults occurred, the fault locations donât need to be identified by control center. Instead, the FIsâ statuses saved in the database of the proposed SFTU can be used to identify fault locations. The distributed control capacities can be realized in the proposed SFTU consequently. In order to identify the fault locations effectively, a fast fault location method for
distribution systems with distributed generators is also proposed in this thesis. Multiple faults occurred simultaneously can also be effectively identified by the proposed fast fault location method. Test results for an actual
distribution system demonstrate the validity of the proposed fast fault location method with the proposed SFTU. As a result, the proposed SFTU has great potential to be integrated into SG to achieve the self-management and auto-healing functions.

▼ Research Doctorate - Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
Animal locomotion possesses advantageous characteristics in animal morphology, motion efficiency and environment adaptivity, hence furnishing a natural learning template for design and optimization of robotic vehicles. Inspired by their natural analogues, the increasing number of animal-like robots have emerged in recent years. This thesis considers a class of mechanical rectifiers arising from dynamics of animal locomotion. The thesis starts with introduction of the general system modeling method of the mechanical rectifiers, followed by the description of three typical robotic implementations, namely fliptail, snake-like and flapping-wings locomotors. The dynamics of mechanical rectifiers then is revealed to be under-actuated and essentially have three components: oscillation, orientation and locomotion dynamics. The oscillation dynamics describes how the oscillatory motion of the body shape results from the interaction with environment and body actuation. The orientation dynamics shows the under-actuation property of the locomotion system where the system orientation does not receive direct control. But it is coupled with oscillation dynamics. The locomotion dynamics demonstrates the effect of the mechanical rectification where the periodic body motion is converted to the movement on the mass center. Regarding three components, the main achievement of this work has three folds. For oscillation dynamics, we introduce the natural oscillation patterns for body shape and proposed a biologically inspired controller to make the closed-loop system exactly entrain the oscillation. For orientation dynamics, we construct a orientation controller on top of the entrainment controller manipulating the average orientation to be aligned with locomotion direction, though at price of the accuracy of body oscillation. The oscillation accuracy however can be tuned by controller parameters. For locomotion dynamics, we prove that the induced body oscillation and orientation can globally achieve a specific locomotion velocity at mass center which is called natural velocity. This three efforts compose a control design framework for mechanical rectifiers. Throughout the thesis, these three aspects of the framework would be detailed by applications to the three aforementioned robotic locomotors. The effectiveness of control design framework is supported theoretically by rigorous proof and practically validated by numerical simulation.

▼ The tuning of a suspension system involves balancing various parameters and demands. There is a need for
analytical tools to get a better understanding of the suspension system and to speed up the design process. In
the current thesis work, an analytical tool is developed and a methodology is established to understand the
effect of elastic elements like bushings and springs on kinematic and compliance parameters. The tool will
also later help in choosing optimum values of bushing stiffness in order to meet the required kinematic and
compliance targets.
In the first step, the position constraints and force constraints of the 5 link suspension system are modelled
along with bushing elements. The bushings are modelled as a tensor with the possibilities of adjusting the
bushing orientation. By using Newton Forward Euler method and non linear solver, the static equilibrium of
the system at a corresponding wheel force input can be determined. This also includes the movement of the
hardpoints in the suspension system during jounce, rebound and steering motions. Further the methodology is
implemented to a Four link suspension and an Integral link suspension.
Sensitivity analysis is another important application of the tool. The system comprises of many bushings
and sensitivity analysis is performed to understand the contribution of each bushing for a particular
design parameter like toe change, camber change, brake steer, lateral force steer and so on. For the sensitivity
analysis, the non linear system is linearized at small displacements and a governing equation is formulated.
The governing equation consists of the stiffness matrix to map the effects of the elastic elements in the system
and the constraint Jacobian to describe the velocity constraints of the system.
The process of tuning is further optimized with the help of multi-objective optimization techniques. In
order to meet design targets, the process of changing the bushing stiffness individually can be time consuming.
With the help of the optimization tool, the optimum values of the bushing stiffness to meet the kinematic
targets can be calculated automatically based on the required wheel motion. This will save significant time
during the tuning process. In order to corroborate the established methodology, the mathematical models are
later verified with multi body dynamics simulation software MSC ADAMS Car. It is found that the results
from the developed mathematical models have a very good match with results from MSC ADAMS Car. The
developed methodology has been successfully implemented for a Five link, Four link and an Integral link
suspension system. The tool also has a wide range of applications.

▼ An application area of increasing importance is creating agent-based simulations to model human societies. One component of developing these simulations is the ability to generate realistic human social networks. Online social networking websites, such as Facebook, Google+, and Twitter, have increased in popularity in the last decade. Despite the increase in online social networking tools and the importance of studying human behavior in these networks, collecting data directly from these networks is not always feasible due to privacy concerns. Previous work in this area has primarily been limited to 1) network generators that aim to duplicate a small subset of the original network's properties and 2) problem-specific generators for applications such as the evaluation of community detection algorithms. In this thesis, we extended two synthetic network generators to enable them to duplicate the properties of a specific dataset. In the first
generator, we consider feature similarity and label homophily among individuals when forming links. The second
generator is designed to handle multiplex networks that contain different
link types. We evaluate the performance of both generators on existing real-world social network datasets, as well as comparing our methods with a related synthetic network
generator. In this thesis, we demonstrate that the proposed synthetic network generators are both time efficient and require only limited parameter optimization.

▼ In the first chapter, I analyze a common property resource located between two countries in the presence of two forms of bilateral externalities: the tragedy of the commons, and the environmental pollution resulting from the depletion of the resource. I show that both the non-cooperative and cooperative forms of regulation produce two distinct effects on firm profits: a negative effect, due to increase in marginal cost of production; and a positive effect, owing to the mitigation of Cournot overproduction. The magnitude of these two effects depends not only on the type of regulatory instrument, but also on the rate of resource extraction and the environmental damage in each country. I identify conditions under which the positive effect of regulation dominates its negative effect, thus increasing firm profits and incentivizing them to support the introduction of regulation.
In the second chapter, I investigate the production decisions of firms with asymmetric production costs and environmental damages, and how their profits are affected by environmental regulation. I demonstrate that emission
fees entail a negative effect on firms’ profits, since they increase unit production costs. However,
fees can also produce a positive effect for a relatively inefficient firm, given that environmental regulation mitigates its cost disadvantage. If such a disadvantage is sufficiently large, I show that the positive effect dominates, thus leading this firm to actually favor the introduction of environmental policy, while the relatively efficient firm to oppose regulation. Furthermore, I show that such support can originate from polluting companies.
In the third chapter, I examine the size
distribution and the growth process of national carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions on a sample of 210 countries/territories for the period 2000-2010. The analysis demonstrates that the Pareto tails-lognormal
distribution, which models lower and upper tails with Pareto and middle range with lognormal and endogenously identifies the transition points, fits the size
distribution of CO2 emissions better than other distributions. The parametric analysis reveals that the upper-tail of CO2 emissions is characterized by Zipf’s law. The results from non-parametric and parametric analysis establish that the growth process of CO2 emissions follows Gibrat’s law.

Sustainability and the environment are current issues in today’s world, especially in the construction industry. The industry stands for a big part of the energy consumption and the waste that is generated. There are considerable scopes for development and improvement to pursuit a sustainable community. The report describes, from many perspectives how common and traditional waste management are different from each other and a comparison has been done of total waste, fraction distribution, average voiding and treatment cost. Production data has shown that common waste management is producing less waste, both totally and per gross floor area. The fractions mixed waste and waste dump have the biggest percentage reduction. Both are related to large cost and environmental impact. Treatment costs per gross floor area have been reduced by 39 % in the common waste management. The fraction combustible has the largest amount of waste and the biggest treatment cost regardless of the waste management method. Here is room for improvement and further sorting. …

▼ The rapid expansion in data communication due to the increased multimedia applications and cloud computing services necessitates improvements in optical transceiver circuitry power efficiency as these systems scale well past 10 Gb/s. In order to meet these requirements, a 26 GHz transimpedance amplifier (
TIA) is presented in a 0.25-??m SiGe BiCMOS technology. It employs a transformer-based regulated cascode (RGC) input stage which provides passive negative-feedback gain that enhances the effective transconductance of the
TIA???s input common-base transistor; reducing the input resistance and pro- viding considerable bandwidth extension without significant noise degradation or power consumption. The
TIA achieves a 53 dB??? single-ended transimpedance gain with a 26??? GHz bandwidth and 21.3 pA/H z
average input-referred noise current spectral density. Total chip power including output buffering is 28.2 mW from a 2.5 V supply, with the core
TIA consuming 8.2 mW, and the chip area including pads is 960 ??m ?? 780 ??m.
With the advance of photonic devices, optical interconnects becomes a promising technology to replace the conventional electrical channels for the high-bandwidth and power efficient inter/intra-chip interconnect. Second, a silicon photonic transceiver is presented for a silicon ring resonator-based optical interconnect architecture in a 1V standard 65nm CMOS technology. The transmitter circuits incorporate high-swing drivers with non-linear pre-emphasis and automatic bias-based tuning for resonance wavelength stabilization. An optical forwarded-clock adaptive inverter-based transimpedance amplifier (
TIA) receiver trades-off power for varying
link budgets by employing an on-die eye monitor and scaling the
TIA supply for the required sensitivity. At 5 GB/s operation, the ring modulator un- der 4Vpp driver achieves 12.7dB extinction ratio with 4.04mW power consumption, while a 0.28nm tuning range is obtained at 6.8??W/GHz efficiency with the bias-based tuning scheme implemented with the 2Vpp transmitter. When tested with a wire-bonded 150f- F p-i-n photodetector, the receiver achieves -12.7dBm sensitivity at a BER=10???15 and consumes 2.2mW at 8 GB/s.
Third, a novel Nano-Photonic Network-on-Chip (NoC) architecture, called LumiNoC, is proposed for high performance and power-efficient interconnects for the chip-multi- processors (CMPs). A 64-node LumiNoC under synthetic traffic enjoys 50% less latency at low loads versus other reported photonic NoCs, and ???25% less latency versus the electrical 2D mesh NoCs on realistic workloads. Under the same ideal throughput, LumiNoC achieves laser power reduction of 78%, and overall power reduction of 44% versus competing designs.

▼ This thesis focuses on creating an application that allows generation of PLC and HMI programs using
TIA Openness. The application is programmed to separate logic from graphics, which is beneficial in case of a change of the visuals of the application. Generating programs is possible thanks to the XML transcription or by creating a configuration within the application guide. The generating is done by overwriting source XML files contained in the application library according to the selected configuration. The application was created with Framework Windows Forms in C#. A reference set of device modules has been created for PLC and HMI in the development environment of
TIA Portal V15.1. The source XML files, on the basis of which the generating is carried out, were then obtained by exporting a reference set and placed into the application library. With a simulation tool Factory I/O and S-7 PLCSIM it was verified that the generated program is, thanks to the mapping of variables on pins of blocks, fully functional in manual mode. At the same time it was proved that it is possible to generate programs for different devices which signifies the versatile use of this application. The contribution of this work is the significant reduction of time when creating new PLC and HMI programs.

▼ As the penetration of wind power into generation mix
increases, the issue of its integration into the power grid becomes
more and more important. The variability of wind power generation
is a major concern as wind is highly intermittent. This may result
in significant overproduction at times, followed by complete
unavailability of wind power at other periods. This intermittency
must be compensated for by other, conventional generation sources
such as coal and gas fired power plants. This reduces the overall
efficiency of the system, due to the need to run some generators as
spinning reserves, and lowers the overall contribution of renewable
generation to the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions. This
thesis examines the possibility to optimize the spatial
distribution of wind power plants over an extended area to decrease
the overall variability of wind power generation in a system. A
power exchange simulation model was developed to analyze the
impacts of different realistic parameters of renewable resources on
micro grids exchanging power among themselves and the national
grid. The thesis then considers the integration of spatially
distributed wind power generation in the wind-rich province of
Alberta, Canada. The thesis is then extended to integrate the wind
resources of Alberta and British Columbia together. The
distribution of power plants is optimized using simulated annealing
and quadratic programming. The results clearly show that the
variability of wind power generation can be reduced if the wind
resources are integrated over a wide geographic area. In this way,
a steady average of wind power generation is possible that can
reduce the base load requirements and spinning reserves which are
necessary for integrating intermittent renewable wind power
generation into the grid.

▼ In this thesis, a multi criteria decision making model for supplier selection and order allocation is developed under demand uncertainty. The primary goal of this model is to assist the buyer in making the decision regarding the selection of suppliers and allocation of order quantities to the selected suppliers to satisfy demand for each product in every time period.
The multi criteria decision making model has the following three objectives: to minimize the total cost over planning horizon, to minimize the total number of quality defects and to minimize the weighted
average lead time. The demand is assumed to follow normal
distribution and shortages are allowed in this model. Further, each supplier is assumed to provide all unit type of price discount for each part. A mathematical formulation is done for each objective and then a general model for multiple products, multiple suppliers, multiple time periods and multiple price discount levels is developed.
The multi criteria model includes the buyer’s demand constraints, the supplier’s capacity constraints and the supplier’s price break constraints. The following decisions are to be made in this model: to select the appropriate suppliers considering the objectives of the model and to determine the optimal order quantity from the selected suppliers to satisfy the buyer’s demand for each time period. This model uses weighted objective method to determine the optimal
solution to the multi criteria decision making problem.

▼ Let E be a rational elliptic curve, and let p be a rational prime of good reduction. Let a
p denote the trace of the Frobenius endomorphism of E at the prime p, and let N
p be the number of rational points on the reduced curve E modulo p. In this dissertation we investigate two different questions regarding the statistical
distribution of these two quantities. We say p is a champion prime of E if when N
p is as large as possible in accordance with the Hasse bound. In a similar vein, we say p is a trailing prime of E when N
p is as small as possible in accordance with the Hasse bound. Together, we say that these primes constitute the extremal primes of E. The first result of this dissertation establishes an asymptotic on the number of elliptic curve champion primes that are less than a real number X in an
average sense. As an immediate corollary, we also gain asymptotics on the
average number of trailing primes less than and the
average number of extremal primes less than X. In 1988, Koblitz made a conjecture on how often N
p is prime for any fixed rational elliptic curve. Balog, Cojocaru, and David have proved that Koblitz's conjecture is true on
average for rational elliptic curves. The second result of this dissertation generalizes their
average result to elliptic curves over certain higher number fields.

▼ The electric power system is undergoing dramatic transformations due to the emergence of renewable resources. However, integrating these resources into the electric grid has proven to be difficult for two main reasons: these resources are uncertain and distributed. This thesis discusses how uncertainty and distributedness of the new resources are manifested as challenges in time and spatial scales, and how we can optimally control the power grid to overcome these challenges. The theme of this thesis is that in order to control the new resources, we need a better understanding of the physical power flow in the system. To illustrate the spatial-scale challenge, we consider the voltage regulation problem for distribution networks. With a deep penetration of distributed energy resources the voltage magnitudes in a distribution system can fluctuate significantly. To control these resources such that voltage profiles remain flat, we need to coordinate the tens of thousands of households in the distribution network. By studying the geometry of power flows in the network, we show that even though the voltage regulation problem is non-convex, it can be convexified exactly through a semidefinite relaxation . Based on this insight, we an optimal and decentralized algorithm for this problem. Only communication between electrical neighbors are required in the algorithm, thus allowing it to scale to problem of large sizes. The second problem we consider is dispatching generators in the transmission network under deep penetration of wind power. Because of on/off and ramp-rate constraints, traditional generators need to be dispatched before the actual time of delivery of energy. On the other hand, wind power cannot be dispatched and is difficult to predict in advance. This creates a mismatch in time-scale between the controls (traditional generators) and the randomness in the system (wind). We capture this challenge as a two-stage stochastic dispatch problem. In contrast to the standard Monte Carlo solutions, we show that the dimensional of the problem can be reduced dramatically by using forecast informations. This dimensional reduction is based on a better understanding of congested DC optimal power flow problems. Using this reduction, we show how to calculate the optimal reserve margin for the system in the presence of renewables, and quantify the intrinsic impact of uncertainties on the system cost.
