1. Comert, Basak. Oda Projesi's practices of mediation.

Degree: MA, Art and Curatorial Practices in the Public Sphere, 2014, University of Southern California

Oda Projesi, an artist collective based in Istanbul, breaks down barriers of prejudice among clashing cultures by investigating Istanbul’s public and private space custom. Turkish territory has a long history of occupation, which has produced a myriad of often‐contrary ideas and ideologies of the East and the West, engendering the syncretism of different cultures and identities. As Istanbul evolved into a global metropolitan city, the dichotomic cultures of Westernized and Anatolian societies developed (or were forced to develop) into segregated ghettos where eastern and western cultures were able to maintain dissociation. Oda Projesi serves as a mediator between these disparate communities by using art as a means to generate interrelations and cultural exchange. Advisors/Committee Members: Anastas, Rhea (Committee Chair), Tain, John (Committee Member), Hudson, Suzanne P. (Committee Member).

2. -6418-6794. Based on a true story : "The Gezi Film Poster Series" and the role of narrative in cultural history.

Degree: MA, Radio-Television-Film, 2015, University of Texas – Austin

Focusing on a series of hypothetical film posters titled the "Gezi Movie Theatre Poster Series," commissioned by Istanbul's independent magazine Bant Mag, this thesis is a multi-methodological, exploratory case study utilizing ethnographic methods, as well as visual, textual, and document analysis. The posters within this series narrativize and encapsulate instances that took shape on the ground during the Gezi protests in Turkey in the Summer of 2013. Embodying the confluence of larger contextual events through the micro-lens of a singular organization and cultural product, the series provides an instance in which key and complex factors regarding social structure, political activism, and cultural production come together in the form of visual narrative. This undertaken analysis seeks to bring together theoretical constructs of social structure, historicization, alternative media and cultural resistance, material culture, artistic creation, and the imaginary, and apply them, in order, to Turkey, Gezi, Bant Mag, and the posters themselves, in order to create an understanding of how they each play a role within the series and its archival formation. Utilizing a critical analytical framework by focusing on the series as art, artifact, and action, after firmly contextually situating the film poster series within Bant Mag's own organizational framework, internal discourse, and history as a magazine, zine, and online resource, this study hopes to demonstrate the affordances of art, imagination, and subjectivity in the creation, documentation, and conservation of historical micro-narratives. Advisors/Committee Members: Straubhaar, Joseph D. (advisor), Fuller, Kathryn (committee member).

3. Katsogiannou, Marilena.

Degree: 2018, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens; Εθνικό και Καποδιστριακό Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών (ΕΚΠΑ)

The subject of the present thesis is the obsessive behaviour of stalking, both in its traditional as well as its virtual expression. Interestingly, it has been introduced to Greek theory as a problematic issue of foreign origin and until recently it was something of a terra incognita for domestic legislation, as an ad hoc crime. From an ontological point of view, however, it is an issue that is neither new nor unheard of, in everyday life. From a systematic point of view, the subject-matter of the present thesis is structured in seven parts, laid out in fourteen chapters, featuring further subsections and distinguishing the theoretical, legislative and case-law part from the section that is dedicated to research on a domestic level. The structure of the corpus of the thesis generally and primarily revolves around five main pillars: i. Linguistic approach, theoretical perception, ontological aspect, historical background (Parts Α΄, C΄ and D΄)· ii. Criminal-dogmatic substantiation (Part Β΄)· iii. Practical approach from a legislative and case-law point of view, namely identification and registration on the one hand of the relevant European imperatives and on the other hand of the ad hoc regulatory framework on an international and European level or –in the absence of such a provision until present– the relevant legislative regulations on a domestic level, as well as the findings of the associated case-law in foreign legal orders (Parts Ε΄ and F΄)· iv. Evaluation of the relevant domestic legislative framework and personal opinion of the author (Part F΄)· v. Domestic, primary empirical data (Part G΄). To be more specific, the present thesis initially develops across a seven-level division of the subject matter, further divided in individual parts-interpretative sections, while the study itself is structured through various general and specialized sub-sections. The Introductory Comments lay out the reference framework, the outline and the main aspects of the issue, in an effort to reveal the matter currente calamo and present the goals of the thesis, in order to introduce the reader to the subject. In Part One, the linguistic and conceptual aspect of stalking is thoroughly investigated. Part Two attempts to probe into the legal nature and substantiation of stalking, from the standpoint of its legal-technical structure, as a behaviour of potentially criminal interest. Part Three deals with the ontological dimension of stalking, namely the criminological phenotype of such behaviour, by presenting the phenomenon’s pragmatics, namely its qualitative and quantitative criteria, together with epidemiological and research data, gathered on an international level. Part Four is dedicated to the theoretical approach and particularly the deterministic basis of stalking. Part Five presents the approaches of criminal policy against stalking, at international and European level. In particular, the legislative dimension of stalking de lege lata is presented on an international level, in respect of such foreign legal orders –where such…
