1. Van Schaick, J. Timespace matters - Exploring the gap between knowing about activity patterns of people and knowing how to design and plan urban areas and regions.

Degree: 2011, Eburon

It is important to know about peoples’ temporospatial activity patterns when making urban and regional designs and plans. Despite wide acknowledgment of this idea, knowledge about people’s activity patterns does not get full attention in day-to-day practice of urban and regional design and planning. This book makes the case that, with activity patterns of people changing nowadays, this subject deserves full attention within the domain of urban and regional design and planning. Understanding how the societal organisation of time relates to the societal organisation of space is key to answering the questions put to designers and planners about the future development of cities and urban regions. ‘Timespace matters’ contains a detailed analysis of two promising approaches of putting time in the picture of urban and regional design and planning: the use of tracking technologies such as GPS and the times-of-the-city approach developed in Italy, Germany and France. It explores the borders between the domains of social geography and of urban and regional design and planning. The book is of interest to planners and designers, researchers and educators in both geography and planning. It has been inspired by two questions that are at the heart of urban and regional design and planning (stedebouwkunde). Paraphrasing Torsten Hägerstrand, the founder of ‘time geography’: What about people in urban and regional design and planning? And, referring to the work of Kevin Lynch: What about time in urban and regional design and planning? Advisors/Committee Members: Nadin, V., Klaasen, I.T..

2. Carneiro, Ligia Maria Cavalcante. Aplicabilidade do princípio constitucional da proteção do consumidor aos contratos eletrônicos.

Degree: 2008, Universidade Federal de Alagoas

The applicability of the constitutional principle of consumer protection is indicated here as the main solution to fill the legal gap concerning the new electronic contracts. From an unknown and irrelevant precept in the consumption relationships developed during the Liberal State, to a leading factor for the economical activity of the Social and Constitutional State of Right, the constitutional principle of consumer protection walked a long hard path before being reconized and valued, bringing to the extent of consumption relationships the desired placement of a vulnerable consumer in the same level as the businesses that sell goods and services, through protective norms. According to this, The Federal Constitution of 1988 took the consumer protection as one of its icons, including it in the fundamental rights and guarantees and, like one of them, a self-aplicable right, with immediate normative power, in spite of the determination of preparation of the Protection Code, which made it stronger, rulling all developed peculiarities in the consumption relationships so far. With the globalization and one of its most interesting features, the internet, a new stage in the consumption relationships began, as well in the international business: The e-commerce was launched, what, in a chaotic but self-organized way, developed a new comfortable layout for the comsumption relationships, when by a simple mouse click, it is possible to reach any kind of goods or services, from national or international businesses, through their virtual shops. However, although it is just a new way of bringing into effect traditional legal contracts, since they are made through electronic support, a lot of doubts and questions related to the regulation of their main aspects have been coming up, for there is not a whole effective national norm, which has been restricting the practice of consumption relationships due to the remaining suspicion about the way they are done. In this case, it is summoned the normative power of the constitucional principle of consumer protection, displayed in the Federal Constitution of 1988, and, as well, in the other Constitutions of all democratic countries, which values highly the consumer citizen protection and their dignity. Due to the nonexistence, and even the difficulties in preparing a harmonic norm which reaches the national and international e-commerce, it is vented the invocation of this normative power as guidelines for solving the increasing demand coming around the Judicial Power related to this new contract perspective through the matrix.

3. Imeokparia, Timothy Oserejenoria. The design, implementation, and evaluation of an interactive multimedia environmental design research information system: architectural design review as case study.

Degree: PhD, City and Regional Planning, 2005, The Ohio State University

This dissertation reports on the design, implementation, and evaluation of an interactive multimedia information system for environmental design research knowledge (IMMEDRIS). One of the primary goals of IMMEDRIS is to leverage the Internet as a channel for accelerating the dissemination and sharing of environmental design research (EDR) knowledge. To meet the requirement of the different user groups, a number of subsystems were designed to facilitate a complex set of views of EDR information for different contexts and applications. The prototype of IMMEDRIS as deployed has a tutorial and a decision aiding subsystem installed as a pilot project and evaluated in their function supporting the decision making process required by local government aesthetic-control regulations. Philosophical discussions and empirical research on the fundamental importance of categories to both learning and communication provides the framework for the design of IMMEDRIS. The design of the tutorial subsystem relies on the idea of visual learning developed in cognitive science and the notion of ostension explicated by Wittgenstein. The decision aiding subsystem is predicated on the notion of judgment as a contingent and contextual practice rather than as a practice guided by determinately fixed categories. Based on accounts by Kant and Wittgenstein on the role of examples in learning concepts and making judgments the decision aiding subsystem relies on a purely procedural criteria under a standard of reasonable method. It outlines a decision procedure which relies on our ability for “empirical classification” and “empirical predication.” With aesthetic judgment as a paradigmatic example and the architectural design review function of most local governments in the United States as case study, the dissertation seeks to locate the goal of objectivity and the methodology of quantification of much EDR within a broader normative framework to give their findings meaning. The project that forms the basis of this dissertation offers a tool that enables the application of concepts derived from EDR to problem solving and decision making. The dissertation evaluated the effectiveness and utility of the tutorial and decision aiding subsystems of the prototype. It was evaluated for usability and its effectiveness in improving a decision making task. Advisors/Committee Members: Nasar, Jack (Advisor).
