▼ In order to ensure long-term adoption and use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) technologies, they must be designed to support children to participate within everyday activities and routines that are prioritized by families. Nine parents of children with cerebral palsy who used AAC technologies participated in semi-structured interviews to provide their perspectives of how AAC technologies were integrated into the functional contexts of everyday life. Five major themes emerged from the discussions: (a) integrating AAC into life, (b) AAC technologies, (c) child needs and skills, (d) parent responsibilities and priorities, and (e) AAC process and decision-making. Children were able to use AAC technologies within a variety of everyday contexts with various partners; however, challenges included access to AAC within physical and outdoor activities and partners who lacked knowledge regarding operational competencies and effective interaction strategies. In order to integrate AAC technologies into life, parents prioritized technology features including ease of programming, improved physical design (e.g., lighter, wearable, easy to mount, durable), features to enhance efficiency and ease of access (e.g., brain-computer interface, sentence prediction), and availably of multiple functions and features (e.g., facial recognition software, augmented reality, projection capabilities, capability to control wheelchair). AAC manufacturers and mainstream technology developers should work to ensure that technologies are responsive to the supports, limitations, and ideal features identified by parents. Future research should seek input from a larger group of stakeholders and use longitudinal methods to examine perceptions of AAC technologies over time. ▼ Previous research has argued that packaging has a great potential to contribute to sustainable development, but how to put this potential into practice is not yet fully explored. The theoretical foundation of the research presented is at the intersection of packaging logistics and sustainable development. This foundation was chosen because it offers established models that are well linked to the holistic view of sustainable packaging of this thesis. The thesis has two purposes. The first is to explore and elaborate on the potential contribution of packaging to sustainable development from a packaging logistics perspective. This is done in two theoretical studies. They are based on data collected via literature reviews and analyzed according to a content analysis procedure. The first theoretical study examines how this contribution of packaging is supported in formalized approaches provided by academia and trade associations. The analysis shows that in general, the approaches fall short in their consideration of packaging functions and the indirect effects packaging functions have on sustainable development. The second theoretical study explores in greater depth how the onsideration of packaging functions can contribute to sustainable development. This resulted in extensive lists of how the 19 packaging features of three packaging functions can contribute to sustainable development in 14 different ways. Several practical examples are given. The second purpose of the thesis is to explore and elaborate on the potential contributions that organic standardization organizations, consumers and brand owners can make to the use and development of sustainable packaging in practice in an organic food context. The data were primarily collected in four studies through interviews and a survey. Content and statistical analyses were applied to the data. The studies show that organic standardization organizations, consumers and brand owners face challenges that limit their ability to contribute to the use and development of sustainable packaging. However, the research also points out additional abilities for these stakeholders that are particularly linked to increased consideration of the important functions of packaging in regulations, purchases, and in packaging selection and development processes. Overall, this thesis emphasizes the need to integrate consideration of packaging functions and a holistic approach to sustainable packaging in an effort to enhance the sustainable packaging of organic food.

▼ Foreshadowing and flashback are two techniques that look alike because they share certain features, namely repetition and experience. These two techniques nevertheless differ in many ways and this research study thus intends differentiating between the two. Existing descriptions of the two techniques provided by critics such as Irwin and Morson do not clearly indicate the differences between them. Terminology pertaining to foreshadowing and flashback is confusingly similar. This makes the identification of these techniques in literary texts difficult, and indeed no theorist explains clearly how to go about such an identification procedure. In order to achieve the aim of this research study, the descriptive, interpretive and comparative methods are used. In addition, an adapted narratological model is employed. In this model, a text is seen as having three levels, namely content, plot and style. In the analysis of content, the topic is emphasised, while theme and atmosphere are emphasised in plot and style analysis respectively. The concept 'technique' has been explained by placing emphasis on its functions and types. With regard to types, the emphasis is on structural techniques with the focus on the second level of a text, i.e the plot, because the two techniques under study, namely foreshadowing and flashback are part of the plot. Foreshadowing is described as a technique whereby an author uses details to suggest the ultimate outcome of the plot or to meaningfully precede the appearance of other details in a literary work. The functions and types of this technique are explained. Forms of this technique include knucklebones, dreams, language, character's name, shadow, conscience, beliefs, etc. Flashback is defined as the author's interruption of the chronological sequence of events in a work of literature. The importance of this technique is also emphasised. The different types of flashback are (a) external retrospection, (b) internal retrospection, and (c) mixed retrospection. A problem with regard to the types of this technique is the fact that not all types have been identified in existing research. This study has thus added two more types of flashback, namely (a) events that have been complicated and (b) events made similar to one another. There are two ways of complicating events, namely (a) changing the chronological order of events and (b) inserting events. Differences between the above-mentioned techniques that have not received attention from theorists are identified as follows in this study: <ol>In the case of foreshadowing, an unusual event appears, while in flashback, a known event is encountered, i.e. a common, everyday event. Magistro darbe "Frazeologizmai lietuvių prozos autorių tekstuose ir žodynuose" analizuojami 14 lietuvių autorių 35 – prozos, eseistikos, kritikos – tekstų, kuriuose užfiksuoti 1074 frazeologizmai (3005 jų pavartojimo atvejai). Šio darbo tikslas – nustatyti, kokie frazeologizmų tipai vyrauja lietuvių autorių tekstuose, aptarti jiems būdingus sisteminius požymius (polisemiją, sinonimiją, antonimiją, variantų įvairovę, dažnumą bei sudaromąją leksiką), tuo tikslu lyginant autorių vartojamus frazeologizmus su specializuotuose frazeologizmų žodynuose pateiktais duomenimis. Magistro darbe aptariama autorių frazeologizmų semantinė klasifikacija, jų funkcijos, analizuojami sintaksinės frazeologizmų sandaros tipai ir modeliai, apžvelgiama kilmė. Pateikiamose išvadose teigiama, kad frazeologizmai yra moderniosios prozos autorių kalbinės raiškos sudedamoji dalis, tačiau ji nesudaro specifinio grožinės literatūros frazeologijos posistemio.

Master of Art thesis deals with Phraseological units in Lithuanian prose authors’ texts and dictionaries. There have been analysed 35 prose, essayist, and critics texts written by 14 Lithuanian authors. In the texts, 1074 phraseological units have been found (3005 cases of their usage). This paper aims at identifying the types of phraseological units used in the texts by Lithuanian authors, discussing the most typical systematic features (polysemy, synonymy, antonymy, diversity of variants, frequency, and lexis). In order to achieve this aim, the phraseological units used by the authors have been compared with the data found in specialised phraseology dictionaries. In this paper, the semantic classification of phraseological units and their functions are described, the types and models of syntactic structures of phraseological units are analysed, and their origin is discussed. The conclusion shows that phraseological units are the part of language expression used by modern prose writers. However, this part does not compose a specific subsystem.

Os sistemas Gerenciadores de Bases de Dados (SGBDs) foram desenvolvidos para manipular domínios de dados numéricos e/ou pequenas seqüencias de caracteres (palavras) e não foram projetados prevendo a manipulação de dados complexos, como por exemplo dados multimídia. Os operadores em domínios de dados que requisitam a relação de ordem têm pouca utilidade para manipular operações que envolvem dados complexos. Uma classe de operadores que se adequa melhor para manipular esses dados são os operadores por similaridade: consulta por abrangência (``range queries') e consulta de vizinhos mais próximos (``k-nearest neighbor queries'). Embora muitos resultados já tenham sido obtidos na elaboração de algoritmos de busca por similaridade, todos eles consideram uma única função para a medida de similaridade, que deve ser universalmente aplicável a todos os pares de elementos do conjunto de dados. Este projeto propõe explorar a possibilidade de trabalhar com estruturas de dados concebidas dentro dos conceitos de dados em domínios métricos, mas que admitam o uso de uma função de distância adaptável, ou seja, que mude para determinados grupos de objetos, dependendo de algumas características universais, e assim permitindo acomodar características que sejam particulares a algumas classes de imagens e não de todo o conjunto delas, classificando as imagens em uma hierarquia de tipos, onde cada tipo está associado a uma função de distância diferente e vetores de características diferentes, todos indexados numa mesma árvore.

The DBMS were developed to manipulate data in numeric domains and short strings, not considering the manipulation of complex data, like multimidia data. The operators em data domain which requests for the total order property have no use to handle complex data. An operator class that fit well to handle this type of data are the similarity operators: range query and nearest neighbor query. Although many results have been shown in research to answer similarity queries, all use only one distance function to measure the similarity, which must be applicable to all pairs of elements of the set. The goal of this work is to explore the possibility of deal with complex data in metric domains, that uses a suitable distance function, that changes its behavior for certain groups of data, depending of some universal features, allowing them to use specific features of some classes of data, not shared for the entire set. This flexibility will allow to reduce the set of useful features of each element in the set individually, relying in the values obtainded for one or few features extracted in first place. This values will guide the others important features to extract from data.

Sistemas Gerenciadores de Bases de Dados Relacionais (SGBDR) são capazes de lidar com um alto volume de dados. As consultas nestes sistemas são realizados a partir da relação de ordem total, domínio sob o qual estão definidos dados simples como números ou strings, por exemplo. No caso de dados complexos, como imagens médicas, áudio ou séries-temporais financeiras que não obedecem as propriedade da relação acima citada e necessária uma abordagem que seja capaz de realizar a recuperação por conteúdo destes dados em tempo hábil e com semântica adequada. Nesse sentido, a literatura nos apresenta, como paradigma consolidado, as consultas por similaridade. Esse paradigma e a base para o funcionamento de muitos aplicativos de auxílio a tomada de decisão pelo especialista como Recuperação de Imagens Médicas por Conteúdo (CBMIR) e Recuperação de Áudio por Conteúdo (CBAR) e inclui diversas sub-áreas de pesquisa tais como extratores de características, funções de distância e métodos de acesso métrico. O desenvolvimento de novos métodos extratores de características e novas funções de distância são de fundamental importância para a diminuição do gap semântico entre os aplicativos e usuários, enquanto os métodos de acesso métricos são os reponsáveis diretos pela rápida resposta dos sistemas. Integrar todas essas funcionalidades em um framework de suporte a consultas por similaridade dentro de um SGBDR permanece um grande desafio. Esse trabalho objetiva estender uma proposta inicial dos recursos disponíveis no SIREN, inserindo novos extratores de características e funções de distância para imagens médicas e séries-temporais financeiras transformando-o em um framework, de forma que seus componentes possam ser utilizados via comandos Structured Query Language (SQL). Database Management Systems (DBMS) can deal with large amount of data. The queries on those systems obey the total order relation (TOR), domain where simple data such as numbers or strings are defined. In the case of complex data (e.g.: medical images, audio or temporal time-series) which does not obey the TOR properties, it\'s mandatory a new approach that can retrieve complex data by content with time skilful and proper semantics. To do so, the literature presents us, as consolidated paradigm, the similarity queries. This paradigm is the base of many computer aided applications (e.g.: Content-Based Medical Image Retrieval (CBMIR) and Content-Based Audio Retrieval (CBAR)) and include several research areas such as features extraction, distance functions and metrical access methods (MAM). Developing new features extractors methods and new distance functions (and combine them) are crucial to reduce the semantic gap between the content-based applications and the users. Abstract There are multiple factors simultaneously affecting speech perception in elderly people. These factors include hearing acuity, aging of the auditory system, and changes in both perception and cognitive processes, all of which can interfere with speech comprehension, especially in cognitively demanding situations. The aim of this study is to clarify which factors influence the use of an automatic phone service system designed for elderly (N = 36) people. More specifically, the aim is to investigate whether it is the factors connected to the system itself or the factors connected to the elderly users and their actions with the system that are the most crucial for using the system successfully. Both quantitative and qualitative methods are used in the study. There were four people who performed as speakers in the system. Analysis of the prosodic features of their speech was performed using acoustic analysis software. The variables connected to the elderly participants (n = 30) were investigated using interviews, pure-tone and speech audiometric tests, the Mini-Mental State Examination test (MMSE), and the Token Test for speech comprehension. Statistical analyses were used to explore whether there was a statistical connection between the acoustic measurements or the variables connected to participants themselves and their performance in usability test situation. In addition, the elderly participants’ actions in the test situation were observed using a material-based, qualitative video-analysis. The individuals who performed as speakers in the system were observed to use features of elderspeak in their speech. However, these speaker characteristics had little effect on the participants’ performance in the tasks. It was the voice-menu that contained the most semantically complex text structure that proved to be the most difficult for participants. Both low scores in the Token test and poor word recognition were connected to poor performance in the tasks. It was found based on the qualitative analysis that in addition to speech comprehension, there were other cognitive processes that were important for completing the tasks successfully, i.e. remembering the instructions given (memory), and the ability to direct, divide and maintain attention during the tasks. Poor performance in the tasks and in the Token Test, as well as problems in executive functions observed in the test situation, were found to be factors predicting dropping out of the next phase of the study the following year. Qualitative analysis of language use in cognitively demanding situations can be used in evaluation of high-level language performance. It may be useful for detecting mild changes in language skills that can be symptomatic of early stages of memory disorders. The results of this study can also be utilized when designing voice-based interfaces. In addition, it is important to consider both advantages and disadvantages of using elderspeak in the fields of nursing and speech therapy.

▼ The category of case is a central issue of the contemporary linguistic research. Theoretical models of analysis developed within the framework of the Structuralism and Generative Grammar focused on the semantic and syntactic dimension of case. At the same time, they discarded the traditional connection of the category to morphology and nominal inflection. Recent developments in the linguistic theory resulted in the re-introduction of morphology in the grammar of language as an autonomous level aiming at the definition of the relationship between the other grammatical levels such as syntax, lexicon and phonology. This development created the theoretical background for the study of case relations from a purely morphological viewpoint which approves the universal character of the category as defined by the generative theory. In this study we examine the character of case relations and morphological case through the analysis of the case system of Ancient Greek under the Lexeme Morphology Model (Beard 1995). More specifically, we claim that case relations are syntactic, not semantic categories, which we call case functions, and exist as arbitrary grammatical codifications of the semantic meanings of the empirical world organized into a universal and closed set. On the other hand, morphological case is defined as a parametric feature of the fusional languages which controls the correspondences between the units of syntax (i.e. the case functions) and their phonological representations (i.e. the inflectional endings). An indication for the syntactic and arbitrary character of case functions is the existing asymmetry in their relation to the semantic meanings they codify (i.e. one case function corresponds to more than one semantic meanings). This asymmetry is a cross-linguistic phenomenon which leads through a detailed examination of the case systems of various languages, to the reconstruction of the universal set of case functions. On the other hand, the role of morphological case as an intermediary mechanism responsible for the definition of the relationship between syntax and phonology is justified when the set of their correspondences is not directly predictable. Namely, when many case functions correspond to many endings and therefore there is danger for the emergence of ungrammatical combinations. This is the case of many fusional languages and Ancient Greek. It is necessary therefore for an administrative mechanism to exist which will be able to manipulate the set of case functions along with the (structural, lexical and semantic) factors conditioning their distribution in syntactic structures and the set of their phonological representations along with their own factors (i.e. gender, number, inflectional class) conditioning their distribution to the various nominal bases and relate them to each other.
