▼ This thesis concerns the problem of minimizing a particular energy functional over an appropriate class of admissible functions on a bounded, convex domain in two-dimensional Euclidean space. We require admissible functions to satisfy Dirichlet boundary conditions on a portion of the fixed boundary with positive one-dimensional Hausdorff measure and Neumann boundary conditions on the rest of the fixed boundary. In this thesis we consider the behavior of minimizers in a neighborhood of some point on the Neumann fixed boundary. The primary result is that minimizers are Lipschitz continuous up to the Neumann fixed boundary.

▼ DNA-based bio-analysis is important in the fields of molecular diagnostics, environmental and food safety monitoring, pathogen identification, forensic sciences, etc. Electrochemical DNA-based bio-analysis has the advantages of high sensitivity, compatibility for miniaturization and easy operation. Most of existing electrochemical approaches require a probe immobilization step, which increases preparation time, lowers hybridization efficiency, requires washing steps, hampers multiplexing and therefore limits the application of the technology in point-of-care scenarios. This thesis describes a novel “immobilization-free” approach for electrochemical DNA-based bio-analysis in which no probe immobilization step is required and the hybridization or other interaction between the detection probe and the target occurs in a homogeneous solution phase. The approach takes advantage of the neutral backbone of a ferrocene-labeled peptide nucleic acid (Fc-PNA) probe, utilizing the electrostatic repulsion between the negatively-charged DNA backbone and a negatively-charged ITO electrode to transduce the hybridization between the target DNA and the Fc-PNA into a reduction of the electrochemical signal of Fc, therefore realizing an immobilization-free, signal-off electrochemical DNA detection. Based on the immobilization-free electrochemical DNA detection, an electrochemical melting curve analysis technique is developed, as well as a multiplex immobilization-free electrochemical DNA detection and quantification method. In order to produce more reliable results, the immobilization-free electrochemical DNA detection is transformed to the “signal-on” operating mode by introducing an additional DNA probe and solution-phase competitive hybridization into the system. Furthermore, the application of the immobilization-free electrochemical DNA detection strategy is expanded to the detection of DNA-modifying enzymes (exemplified with DNA polymerase) and aptamer-binding bio-molecules (exemplified with adenosine). Finally, the detection sensitivity of the immobilization-free electrochemical DNA-based bio-analytical platform is improved by using an electrode coated with a positively-charged conducing polymer as well as an interdigitated array electrode. The development of an immobilization-free detection platform is a great leap towards point-of-care applications of electrochemical DNA-based bio-analysis technologies.

▼ This study covers industry
analysis, financial
analysis and market
analysis of Nepal orthodox tea. It aims to
evaluate the industry forces, analyze the financial performance of
firms, and assess market potential. The study is based on field
survey, key informants’ interviews, and participant observation in
combination with data from secondary sources. The financial
information of 65 tea processing firms was collected using standard
financial formats. The production and trade related statistical
data were obtained from National Tea and Coffee Development Board
Nepal, Trade and Export Promotion Center Nepal, FAOSTAT,
International Trade Center and STATISTA.
The results of industry
analysis indicate that in general, tea processors have low
bargaining power against input suppliers and tea buyers. The
processing industry was found to be less attractive for new
entrants. The threat of substitutes was found to be low. But there
is intense internal competition among processing firms for
resources and markets. Limited and inefficient production, low
economies of scale, unorganized supply chain system, limited access
to global market are the major binding constraints identified by
this study.
The results of the financial
analysis found positive
returns of investment and increasing returns to scale. However, the
average capacity utilization of the processing firms is found to be
33 percent. A Cobb-Douglas production function was used to estimate
production potential and the result depicted that a one percent
increase in the investment in capital, labor and raw material could
increase revenue by 0.20 percent, 0.12 percent and 0.68 percent
respectively. Thus, this study revealed that the processing firms
can decrease processing costs and increase profits by expanding
production. The total factor productivity is found to be 3.67 which
is the growth of real output not explained by the increase in
capital and labor used in the production.
The global tea market is
growing at the annual compound growth rate of 3.4 percent by
volume, 5.7 percent by price and 9.3 percent by value. About 79
percent of the consumers who purchased Nepalese tea rated it
excellent. This study informs that there is a promising export
potential due to increased demand, competitive price, unique taste
and quality products. However, the study shows that about 90
percent of the total exports go to the low-priced Indian market and
only 10 percent are exported to premium market. The
analysis
indicates that China, India, Sri Lanka and Kenya are the major
competitor of Nepal. Similarly, Pakistan, Russia, United Arab
Emirates and Morocco are potential markets for volume export
whereas European countries and North America are potential
lucrative markets for specialty Nepalese tea. As a result of
foregoing it is recommended that Nepalese exporters diversify and
differentiate their market to enhance their profit potential. The
findings of this study are particularly relevant to the Nepalese
tea processors to improve their competitiveness, production
efficiencies, and…

▼ This work is concerned with analysing the potential impact of direct changes to large- scale enterprise systems, and, in particular, how to minimise testing efforts on such changes. A typical enterprise system may consist of hundreds of thousands of classes and millions of methods. Thus, it is extremely costly and difficult to apply conventional testing techniques to such a system. Retesting everything after a change is very expensive, and in practice generally not necessary. Selective testing can be more effective. However, it requires a deep understanding of the target system and a lack of that understanding can lead to insufficient test coverage. Change Impact
Analysis can be used to estimate the impacts of the changes to be applied, providing developers/testers with confidence in selecting necessary tests and identifying untested entities. Conventional change impact
analysis approaches include static
analysis, dynamic
analysis or a hybrid of the two analyses. They have proved to be useful on small or medium size programs, providing users an inside view of the system within an acceptable running time. However, when it comes to large-scale enterprise systems, the sizes of the programs are orders of magnitude larger. Conventional approaches often run into resource problems such as insufficient memory and/or unacceptable running time (up to weeks). More critically, a large number of false-negatives and false-positives can be generated from those approaches. In this work, a conservative static
analysis with the capability of dealing with inheritance was conducted on an enterprise system and associated changes to obtain all the potential impacts. Later an aspect-based dynamic
analysis was used to instrument the system and collect a set of dynamic impacts at run-time. We are careful not to discard impacts unless we can show that they are definitely not impacted by the change. Reachability
analysis examines the program to see “Whether a given path in a program representation corresponds to a possible execution path”. In other words, we employ reachability
analysis to eliminate infeasible paths (i.e., miss-matched calls and returns) that are identified in the control-flow of the program. Furthermore, in the phase of alias
analysis, we aim at identifying paths that are feasible but cannot be affected by the direct changes to the system, by searching a set of possible pairs of accesses that may be aliased at each program point of interest.
Our contributions are, we designed a hybrid approach that combines static anal- ysis and dynamic
analysis with reachability
analysis and alias/pointer
analysis, it can be used to (1) solve the scalability problem on large-scale systems, (2) reduce false-positives and not introduce false-negatives, (3) extract both direct and indirect changes, and (4) identify impacts even before making the changes. Using our approach, organizations can focus on a much smaller, relevant subset of the overall test suite instead of blindly doing their entire suite of tests. Also it enables testers to augment…

▼ Malaysia is known for the multiracial and multicultural society who lives together
harmoniously despite of the diversities. The tolerance of the people towards each
others’ culture and religions has always been the subject of interest for social science
researchers. The harmony is due to the phenomena of synchronization of the
notions among the community. Synchronization has been widely studied since it
is a natural phenomena happening around us everyday, such as the synchronization
of fireflies flashes at night. In relate of these, we anticipate in the study of
the synchronization of the opinions in a diverse society with mathematical modelling.
In this thesis, we analyse three different methods of synchronization by 3
different models: Kuramoto model, Opinion Changing Rate model and a linear
model associate with the famous Friedkin and Johnsen Model. We first develop a
modified version of existing mathematical models and then conduct the numerical
experiment on the models to utilize them in the desired framework.

▼ In this thesis, new and effective operational methods based on polynomials and
wavelets for the solutions of FDEs and systems of FDEs are developed. In particular
we study one of the important polynomial that belongs to the Appell family of
polynomials, namely, Genocchi polynomial. This polynomial has certain great
advantages based on which an effective and simple operational matrix of derivative
was first derived and applied together with collocation method to solve some singular
second order differential equations of Emden-Fowler type, a class of generalized
Pantograph equations and Delay differential systems. A new operational matrix of
fractional order derivative and integration based on this polynomial was also
developed and used together with collocation method to solve FDEs, systems of
FDEs and fractional order delay differential equations. Error bound for some of the
considered problems is also shown and proved. Further, a wavelet bases based on
Genocchi polynomials is also constructed, its operational matrix of fractional order
derivative is derived and used for the solutions of FDEs and systems of FDEs. A
novel approach for obtaining operational matrices of fractional derivative based on
Legendre and Chebyshev wavelets is developed, where, the wavelets are first
transformed into corresponding shifted polynomials and the transformation matrices
are formed and used together with the polynomials operational matrices of fractional
derivatives to obtain the wavelets operational matrix. These new operational matrices
are used together with spectral Tau and collocation methods to solve FDEs and
systems of FDEs.

▼ In machine learning, there are three type of learning branch that can used in classification procedures for data mining. Those branch are consist of supervised learning, unsupervised learning and reinforcement learning. This study focuses on supervised learning that seek to classify all the Iris dataset respect to three species (setosa, versicolor and virginica) in order them to mimic the actual dataset by using Support Vector Machine with four different kernel function (Linear, Radial Basis, Sigmoid and Polynomial), Random Forest (RF), k-Nearest Neighbors(k-NN) and Random Nearest Neighbors (RNN) as a method. The first objective of this study is to improve a new algorithm technique for classification. The new algorithm come from a combination of an ideas of k-NN algorithm and ensemble concept. The second objective is to conduct a supervised and binary ensemble machine learning technique for classification. This is done by using method of RF and RNN that share the same ensemble concept. The last objective is to identify the best model for classification procedures. Performance Measurement Tools such as overall accuracy, kappa, average sensitivity, average specificity, average precious, average detection rate, average prevalence and misclassification error rate (MER) were used by refers confusion matrix values output during data analysis for average and individual performance of each classifier. Besides that, Performance Visualization such as Stacked Bar Plot, Fourfold Plot, Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) Curve and Lollipop Chart are used to simplify each output for more clear understanding. Random Nearest Neighbors (RNN) has highest accuracy value that is 98.67% and just 1.33% misclassification error rate (MER) compare to other classifier. Therefore, Random Nearest Neighbors (RNN) is preferable for supervised learning classification procedures.

▼ A proble'm in fundamental mathematics is to find an approximation to the functions
which are given explicitly or implicitly by operator equations, from a set of
functions of simple structure. It is well known that the Approximation Theory of
functions can be divided into Best, Good and Possible Approximation. The theory
of best approximation is mainly concerned with the questions of existence, uniqueness,
characterizations, qualitative properties of the minimizing functions and the
approximations errors minimize when the complexity order of the system is increased.
The best approximation is playing a vital role in engineering problems. It
considers the problem of approximation defined on a set taking values in an normed
and n-normed space. To find an approximation of the exact value, it must know
something about the problem element. Usually the information is imprecise; thus
there exist much information corresponding to same problem element. Under such
an interpretation it seems natural to consider the information as fuzzy, rather than
crisp. This is the motivation of the thesis to develop the concept of best approximation,
best coapproximation in the framework of fuzzy normed and fuzzy n-normed
syaces. The objective of this thesis is a systematize study of t-best approximation,
t-best simultaneous approximation and t-best (simultaneous) coapproximation
problems in fuzzy normed and fuzzy n-normed spaces X with respect to continuous
t-norm. This study is useful for the development of fuzzy functional analysis and
fuzzy approximation theory in order to get the precise solutions.

▼ With the upsurge of Web 2.0, customers are able to
share their opinions and feelings about products and services,
politics, economic shifts, current events and any number of other
topics on the Web. This information, if leveraged effectively, can
provide rich and valuable insights, such as: input for vendors to
create successful marketing strategies, understanding of areas of
improvement in products and services and tracking political
opinion. The problem with this information is that it is unorganised
and unstructured, therefore, it is difficult to assess
automatically and in bulk. Studies in the field of sentiment
analysis aim to provide a solution to determining the polarities
of, and gain an overview of, the wider public opinion behind
certain topics in a large volume of textual data. This research
provides a novel framework and a solid, practical implementation of
the proposed framework for fine-grained sentiment
analysis. The
framework supports mixed-opinion text and multiword expressions
when analysing the sentiments expressed and the aspects that those
sentiments relate to.This research uses datasets across two domains
in the customer reviews area (phone products and hotel services) to
evaluate the proposed framework for its reliability and validity. A
sizeable performance improvement was noted whereby the proposed
methodology yielded a result of 91.3% accuracy in sentiment
classification, as compared to the baseline (SentiWordNet), which
had a result of 71.0%. In addition, an accuracy of 92.5% was
observed for the aspect
analysis automatically generated across the
two domains tested.

▼ In this thesis mass spectral and chromatographic techniques were developed and applied to identify and characterise numerous novel platinum(II) and (IV) compounds designed as anticancer agents. In a novel method for the synthesis of cis-oxalato(trans- -1,2- cyclohexanediamine)platinum(II) or oxaliplatin these techniques could be applied to differentiate between the molecular complex and the autoionised analogue (viz. Ptdach2 2+Ptox2 2-). In another novel synthetic method for the same compound the ligand exchange reactions at various temperatures could be investigated and kinetic curves obtained served to illuminate the chemistry involved, indicating the role of small amounts of water in the essentially non-aqueous solvent systems dmf and isoamyl alcohol respectively. These allowed ligand exchange without resulting in hydrolyses even up to 85°C. The ionisation rate of divalent platinum halide complexes was determined for various amine ligands as well as N-S chelate ligands. A comparison of these could suggest why N-S complexes have poor anticancer action. Ionisation was not only studied for neutral molecular species but also for monocationic ones. Relationships could be found with stereochemical aspects of the chelates used. By investigating results of EV-CAD studies thermodynamic data could be obtained which indicated that bond strength decreases from chloro to iodo analogues although extent of ionisation in aqueous solution, i.e kinetic stability, is the reverse. Products formed by the reaction of NO2 gas with Platinum(II) compounds could be identified and separated which greatly contributed to the understanding of the chemistry involved in the formation of mononitro platinum(IV) complexes. Some of these proved to have exceptional anticancer properties. Studies of the interaction of thiol containing biomolecules were performed as a function of time. The results contributed to the understanding of the action of the anticancer agents

▼ Discriminant analysis uses labelled observations to infer the labels of unlabelled observations in a population. Despite many advances in unsupervised and, to a lesser extent, semi-supervised learning over the past decade, discriminant analysis is often employed using approaches that date back to very well-known work of Fisher in the 1930s. One notable exception is mixture discriminant analysis, where the labels are estimated using parametric finite mixture models, commonly the Gaussian mixture model. The supposed advantage with mixture discriminant analysis is that multiple Gaussian components can be used for each class, hence providing a work around when a class is not Gaussian. This thesis makes several contributions to ``modern" discriminant analysis. Three robust discriminant analysis methods are introduced using mixtures of multivariate t-distributions, mixtures of multivariate power exponential distributions, and mixtures of contaminated Gaussian distributions, respectively. This provides an appealing framework for handling varying tail-weights and peakedness in the classes that may also contain mild outliers. To facilitate the modelling of asymmetric classes, we also explore robust discriminant analysis via finite mixtures of generalized hyperbolic distributions and mixtures of multivariate skew-t distributions. These approaches are tailored towards skewed classes but also have the added advantage of modelling symmetric classes where necessary. Finally, we introduce an approach that combines support vector machines with mixture discriminant analysis. This approach defines class boundaries in the labelled observations and, in some sense, improves mixture discriminant analysis performance. Crucially, in all of our mixture modelling work, we consider the case where the number of components per class is one. The utility of the approaches introduced is demonstrated on simulated and real data sets.

▼ Harmonic time series are often used to describe the periodic nature of a time series, for example the periodic nature of a variable star’s observed light curve. Statistical methods for determining the number of harmonic components to include in harmonic time series are limited. In this thesis a stepwise bootstrap procedure based on a F-type statistic is suggested. The performance of the stepwise procedure is compared to that of Schwartz’s Bayesian Criterion (SBC) and a procedure based on a statistic described by Siegel (1980). Harmonic series with correlated noise terms and irregularly spaced observations are also considered. Tests to detect changes in harmonic parameters are also derived in this thesis. A cumulative sum statistic to test for constant amplitude is derived. It is shown that testing for constant amplitude is equivalent to testing for constant slope in simple linear regression. We also derive a likelihood ratio statistic to test for constant amplitude. It is shown that the latter likelihood ratio statistic is asymptotically equivalent to the cumulative sum statistic. These statistics are compared to a quadratic form statistic used by Koen (2009). Likelihood ratio tests are also derived for detecting changes in the frequency or phase of harmonic time series. Graphical devices to aid in diagnostic checking are suggested.

▼ Using data from Hedge Fund Research, Inc. (HFR), this study adapts and expands
on existing methods in survival analysis in an attempt to investigate whether hedge
funds mortality can be predicted on the basis of certain hedge funds characteristics.
The main idea is to determine the characteristics which contribute the most to the
survival and failure probabilities of hedge funds and interpret them. We establish hazard
models with time-independent covariates, as well as time-varying covariates to interpret
the selected hedge funds characteristics. Our results show that size, age, performance,
strategy, annual audit, fund offshore and fund denomination are the characteristics that
best explain hedge fund failure. We find that 1% increase in performance decreases
the hazard by 3.3%, the small size and the less than 5 years old hedge funds are the
most likely to die and the event-driven strategy is the best to use as compare to others.
The risk of death is 0.668 times lower for funds who indicated that an annual audit
is performed as compared to the funds who did not indicated that an annual audit is
performed. The risk of death for the offshore hedge funds is 1.059 times higher than the
non-offshore hedge funds.

▼ In many applications, measurements of a signal consist of the magnitudes of linear functionals while the phase information of these functionals is unavailable. Examples of these type of measurements occur in optics, quantum mechanics, speech recognition, and x-ray crystallography. The main topic of this thesis is the recovery of the phase information of a signal using a small number of these magnitude measurements. This is called phase retrieval. We provide a choice of 4d − 4 magnitude measurements that uniquely determines any d dimensional signal, up to a unimodular constant. Then we provide a choice of 6d − 3 magnitude measurements that admits a stable polynomial time algorithm to recover the signal under the influence of noise. We also explore the behavior of pathological signals in this algorithm, as well as the mean squared error. Finally, we show that if the signal is known to be s sparse, then we only need a suitable choice of O(s log d/s) such measurements for the stable algorithm to successfully recover the signal.

▼ Logs are widely used as source of information to understand the activity of computer systems and to monitor their health and stability. As large-scale systems generate hundreds of millions of logs per hour reaching tens of terabytes, automated techniques exist to take advantage of the rich information present in logs. However, these techniques require the link to the event that generated the log, the log statement in the source code. Several solutions have been proposed to solve this non-trivial challenge, of these the approach based on static analysis reaches the highest accuracy. Log statements in the source code are statically analysed to extract templates and match log messages to these templates, creating a link between log messages and statements. However, no evaluation has been performed in large scale environments of various industries where log messages are versatile. We perform a field study of the approach based on static analysis of source code to relate log messages to its log statement in a large-scale environment. The approach is evaluated on a rich and versatile dataset of logs produced by over thirty thousand log statements, reaching an accuracy of 97,6%. We provide an non-intrusive, adaptable to custom logging practices and easily extendable implementation that is ready to be used in large-scale system, which allows for automated log analysis techniques to be adopted.

▼ Although the term complaining represents an ostensibly straightforward behaviour, it
has come to obtain a range of meanings within academic and commercial works which
have directed research toward understanding the behaviour and attempting to improve
the way that it is undertaken, particularly in commercial environments where complaint
handling constitutes an important field of commercial practice for many firms. It is
proposed in this thesis that such variation in the way that complaining is approached is
problematic, as it is treated ways that frequently underemphasise the fundamental point
that it is overwhelmingly conducted in interpersonal interactions using language as its
primary vehicle (Edwards, 2005). This thesis offers an approach to complaint handling
and complaining that eschews such approaches in favour of an empirically grounded
account based on the principles of ethnographic
analysis, conversation
analysis, and
discursive psychology. Through investigating the complaint handling procedures as
practiced by employees in an institution expressly dedicated to the receipt of complaints
and enquiries from customers by employing participant observation and interviews, an
account of complaint handling is developed that identifies how a range of forces works
to impact on the way that it is performed in an institutional environment, furnishing
complaint handling with a level of detail not currently offered in managerial literature
dedicated to developing the practice. Next, two research chapters present the
investigation of two different aspects of complaint interactions themselves. The first of
these focuses on call openings as customers and institutional agents work to align
themselves to the project of the call, demonstrating varying orientations to institutional
complaining as callers demonstrate their own procedures for complaining (and
enquiring) which may not match the institutional prerogatives and procedures of the
agents receiving the calls. The final research chapter offers an
analysis of a recurrent
practice in the complaint calls themselves: callers’ use of self-disclosure in the service
of rendering matters as problematic and warranting complaint. This finding adds to
existing discursive understandings of how complaining is done. Taken together the
findings offer an alternative approach to investigating complaint handling by treating it
as an indexical practice bound to local demands. This offers a detailed depiction of
complaint handling and complaining ‘in situ’ that may offer researchers and commercial
entities a new approach to investigating how it is that complaining is done and how, in
commercial or institutional contexts, complaint handling may be improved through the
methods employed in the thesis.

▼ In this research, Homotopy Perturbation Method(HPM) and Adomian Decomposition Method(ADM), as two known methods, is analyzed for solving Volterra integral from of the Lane-Emden equations. The result from both method are compared with the exact solution. It has been shown that these two methods are capable to get the similar result with exact solution, when solving Volterra integral from of the Lane-Emden equations. The efficiency of these two methods are demonstrated through several examples to show the ability of the methods in solving Lane-Emden equations of Volterra integral form. This research has determind that ADM is more reliable and efficient than HPM. The ADM requires shorter computational that HPM, but it yields more accurate results compared to HPM.

▼ In this research, Homotopy Analysis Method (HAM) is a analytical method that
be used to obtained the approximation solution of hyperbolic equation. Hyperbolic
equation is a one of the class of Partial Differential Equation (PDE). PDE is one of the
basic areas of applied analysis, and it is difficult to imagine any area of applications
where its impact is not felt. In recent decades, there has been tremendous emphasis on
understanding and modelling nonlinear processes by using nonlinear PDE. Basically
the nonlinear PDE is difficult to solve compare to linear PDE. So, HAM is introduced
to solve hyperbolic equation for both linear and nonlinear equation. The auxiliary
parameter ~ in the HAM solutions has provided a convenient way of controlling
the convergence region of series solution. This method is reliable and manageable
to get the approximation solution. The optimum approximation solution of nonlinear
hyperbolic equation can be easier obtain by HAM due to it always provides a family
of solution expressions in the auxiliary parameter and the convergence. It shown that
in HAM even different numbers of auxiliary parameter, ~ is used, the approximation
solution still converge to the exact solution.

▼ This paper aims to show how people use and understand metaphorical language in conversational discourse. Specifically, I examine how metaphorical language has the potential to be either effective or ineffective in its usage, and how they are bound to the contextual environment of the conversation. This particular setting is a conversation between a researcher and a participant involved in a therapeutic program. Metaphorical language is shown to be helpful
for understanding difficult subjects; however, I found most metaphorical occurrences ineffective in meaning-making. Often these ineffective metaphors are elaborated or repeated throughout the discourse event, creating problems with cohesion and understanding. Metaphor use in conversation is an effective rhetorical tool for creating meaning, but it is also a problematic device when it comes to aligning participants' conversational goal.

▼ In a kn-complex word over an alphabet Σ of size k each of the kn words of length n appear as a subword at least once. Such a word is said to have maximum subword complexity. De Bruijn sequences of order n over Σ are the shortest words of maximum subword complexity and are well known to have length kn+n-1. They are efficiently constructed by finding Eulerian cycles in so-called de Bruijn graphs. In this thesis, we investigate partial words, or sequences with wildcard symbols or hole symbols, of maximum subword complexity. The subword complexity function of a partial word w over a given alphabet of size k assigns to each positive integer n, the number pw(n) of distinct full words over the alphabet that are compatible with factors of length n of w. For positive integers h, k and n, a de Bruijn partial word of order n with h holes over an alphabet Σ of size k is a partial word w with h holes over Σ of minimal length with the property that pw(n)=kn. In some cases, they are efficiently constructed by finding Eulerian paths in modified de Bruijn graphs. We are concerned with the following three questions: (1) What is the length of k-ary de Bruijn partial words of order n with h holes? (2) What is an efficient method for generating such partial words? (3) How many such partial words are there?

▼ Stent implantation is an alternative invasive technique for treating the narrowed
artery or stenosis in carotid artery to restore blood to the brain. However, the
restenosis process is usually observed after a few weeks of carotid stenting due to
abnormal progression of atherosclerosis and thrombosis. Many studies reported that
the activity of atherosclerosis and thrombosis is majorly influenced by the
geometrical strut configuration. Thus, this study was carried out to determine the
haemodynamic performance on different geometrical stent strut configurations based
on numerical modelling and statistical analyses. Six different stent strut
configurations were 3-D modelled and simulated in different physiological
conditions; normal blood pressure (NBP), pre-hypertension (PH) and hypertension
stage one (HS1) through computational fluid dynamic (CFD) method. The
haemodynamic performance of stent was analysed based on parameters namely time
averaged wall shear stress (TAWSS), time averaged wall shear stress gradient
(TAWSSG), oscillatory shear index (OSI), relative residence time (RRT) and flow
separation parameter (FSP). Meanwhile, Pictorial Selection Method was used to
evaluate the best haemodynamic stent performance based on a scoring system. From
observation, stent Type VI was seen to show the highest score for TAWSS, which
was 2.98 in overall physiological condition. For TAWSSG, the lowest score was
observed for Type V stent with 0.51. Furthermore, Type VI stent displayed the
highest score for OSI while Type IV has the lowest score for FSP with 2.08 and 0.28,
respectively. On the other hand, RRT was seen varying according to the
physiological condition where the highest score in NBP and PH conditions were
achieved by Type I while HS1 condition was achieved by Type V. In conclusion,
Type VI has the best stent performance, whereas Type IV has the worst stent
performance according to the scoring system based on haemodynamic parameters.
Further, Type I, Type II, Type III and Type V stents showed moderate hemodynamic
performances for all physiological conditions.

▼ Pointer analysis is a program analysis that determines
the memory locations pointed to by individual pointers. Imprecise
pointer information is a major impediment to data-flow analyses and
back-end optimizations that depend on pointer information. Most
pointer analyses are based on a points-to abstraction, which is an
abstraction of memory that partitions the conceptually infinite
number of memory locations into a finite number of abstract
objects. In a flow-sensitive pointer-analysis, a points-to
relationship between abstract objects is computed at each program
point. Our pointer analysis is based on another abstraction called
the Expression Data Flow graph, which expresses the memory
dependencies between expressions that appear in a program. This
abstraction represents pointer information in a more compact and
more precise way than a points-to abstraction. We present a
flow-sensitive and field-sensitive algorithm that computes a
precise Expression Data Flow graph of a program in a negligible
amount of time.

▼ This study analysed the stylistic features of foregrounding and figurative language as used by Diescho in his “Dictums” published in the New Era newspaper between January 2014 and December 2015, using the formalist theory. The researcher selected 20 of these dictums that dealt with social and political issues. Though Diescho is an author of several works, a political analyst and a commentator on various issues who is articulate and creative in style, especially when it comes to language use, no analysis has yet been carried out to study his authorial style that is linguistically fascinating. The study was guided by two objectives namely; to analyse Diescho’s use of foregrounding in the form of parallelism and deviation to effectively convey his message, and to explore how Diescho stylistically constructs meaning through figurative language and other linguistic expressions. The study adopted a qualitative research design. Being explorative in nature, the design aided in seeking to understand how Diescho used language through foregrounding and figures of speech to air his views on several issues. The study employed a purposive sampling procedure to select the sample; however, the selected sample cannot be claimed to represent the author’s entire style since it is only a small fraction of Diescho’s publications. The study found the following regarding Diescho’s style: (a) Diescho is an archetypal scholar, author and a great writer whose authorial style can aid in creating great writers in Namibia. (b) Diescho is an author with multiple authorial styles, who creatively combine styles to write what he intends the readers to read (understand). (c) In addition to deviation and parallelism, Diescho employed other writing techniques such as reference, rhetoric questions and extensive use of quotes to strengthen and enhance his arguments, as well as to voice his views, beliefs and opinions on multiple issues.

▼ The third component of guinea pig complement (C3) was isolated from EDTA-plasma by poly(ethylene)glycol precipication, depletion of plasminogen on Sepharose-L-lysine, chromatography on DEAE-Sephacel, and gel filtration on Sepharose CL-6B. IgG was removed in a final step with Protein A-Sepharose. The recovery of functional activity was 56% with a purification of 81-fold. SDS-PAGE indicated an a3 chain structure. The apparent molecular weights of the alpha- and beta-3-chains were 115,000 ± 12,000 and 65,000 ± 7,000, respectively. When compared with human C3, the alpha-chain was of similar size, but, the guinea pig beta-chain was significantly smaller. This difference may in part be due to carbohydrate since guinea pig beta-chain, unlike human beta-chain, failed to stain for carbohydrate following periodic acid oxidation. The alpha- and beta-chains were separated on a column of Sepharose CL-4B equilibrated in 0.2% SDS and the amino-terminal structure of each was determined by Edman degradation. The structure of each chain was highly concordant with the corresponding chain of human C3. Incubation of guinea pig C3 with (14C) methylamine resulted in a final uptake of 0.76 moles/mole into the alpha-chain with the simultaneous acquisition of a free sulfhydryl group (SH). Human and guinea pig (14C) methylamine-inactivated C3 were immobilized on activated Thiol-Sepharose and digested with porcine elastase. SDS-PAGE of bound material released with L-cysteine revealed a primary band with a molecular weight of 33,000 (C3d) which retained the (14C) label. Amino-terminal structure of human and guinea pig C3d indicated 92% homology for the 29 residues identified. The (14C) label was released with a Glx residue at step 26 and the SH group, which appears upon nucleophilic inactivation, was released with cysteinyl residue at step 23. This indicates that a thiolester site is located at this position in the amino-terminal region of C3d. For human, a 35 residue tryptic peptide containing the thiolester site was previously isolated and the positions 1-16 reported (Tack et al., 1980, PNAS 77: 5764). The complete sequence of the 35 residue peptide is reported here and commences with the histidyl residue at position 15 in C3d.

▼ The reactions of xanthydrol with various amino acids were investigated. Spectrophotometric measurements indicated that reactions occurred between xanthydrol and the amino acids arginine, asparagine, cysteine, glutamine, histidine, lysine and tryptophan. No reaction occurred with the amino acids alanine, ?-alanine, glycine, leucine, praline, hydroxy proline, threonine or the dipeptide glycyl-L-leucine. S-Xanthyl-cysteine was isolated as the hydrochloride. The xanthyl derivatives of N-carbobenzoxy-L-asparagine and N-carbobenzoxy-L-tryptophan were prepared in crystalline form. Hydrogenation of these compounds to remove the carbobenzoxy group was unsuccessful. N-Xanthyl nicotinamide was also prepared. The reaction products of xanthydrol and the amino acids were found to be quite unstable in solution pH 8.0 when placed in a water bath at 25? for 120 minutes or heated to 95? for 60 minutes at pH 2.5 with the exception of the tryptophan product. The violet-colored material isolated from a reaction between xanthydrol and tryptophan was stable in a mixture of 12N HC1 and glacial acetic acid or 6N NaOH when refluxed for 24 hours. Cytochrome c isolated by the producer developed by Keilin and Hartree (21) found to be electrophoretically homogeneous at pH 7.3 and pH 10.68 but inhomogeneous at pH 8.5. Chromatography on IRC-50 was effective in increasing the iron content of cytochrome c from 0.13% to 0.47%, It, too, was electrophoretically homogenous at pH 7.3 and pH 10.68 but was inhomogeneous at pH 8.5. Xanthydrol was found to react with cytochrome c. The xanthyl-cytochrome c was inactive when assayed in the succinoxidase system. A 2.66 molar excess of xanthydrol was found to cause a 63% inactivation whereas a 2 molar excess if xanthydrol caused none. Xanthydrol had no apparent effect on cytochrome c when assayed chemically. Xanthyl-cytochrome c was prepared by the reaction between xanthydrol and cytochrome c in 66% acetic acid. An average of 1.8 xanthyl residues were found per mol of cytochrome c. The xanthyl-cytochrome c had a mobility of +3.8cm.2/V/sec. x 10-5 at pH 7.3 compared with a mobility of +4.8 cm. 2/V/sec. x 10-5 of cytochrome c at the same pH. Numerous differences were noted between the absorption spectra of cytochrome c and xanthyl-cytochrome c. Xanthyl-cytochrome c was found to be an inhibitor of cytochrome c in the succinoxidase system. The chemically reduced xanthyl-cytochrome c could be oxidized enzymatically and did not inhibit the enzymatic oxidation of reduced cytochrome c. Oxidized xanthyl-cytochrome c could not be found in reduced enzymatically and inhibited the enxymatic reduction of oxidized cytochrome c. A three-fold excess of xanthyl-cytochrome c caused a 35% inhibition of cytochrome c in the succinoxidase system. Oxidized xanthyl-cytochrome c was not reduced by a soluble DPNH-cytochrome c reductase prepared from beef heart.

▼ Many academics have attempted to resolve the demarcation problem through boundary work. Due to this problem, it is difficult to distinguish between Science and Non-Science. Even some reasoned Science, such as Psychology, are accused of being unscientific. This investigation looks at how the designated Pseudoscience of Psychical research constructs its research as scientific when widely believed to investigate “non-science”. By analysing this construction through discourse
analysis, a better understanding of how Psychical research defines itself as scientific can be observed. The body of data used were works from the last twenty years found in “The Journal of the Society for Psychical Research” as this would allow access to extensive, recent works on Psychical Research. The
analysis established that the researchers constructed their work as scientific using five possible approaches. It was found to be constructed with how Psychical research is compared/linked to other science which constructs the research as sharing scientific characteristics with other Science, that Psychical research is constructed as having an improved, scientific future direction which gives the field credibility in this pursuit, Psychical research constructed as having the scientific fundamentals of replicable experiments and results which constructs it as valid and relevant, Psychical phenomenon occurring throughout history and today which infers a longstanding body of evidence important in establishing as scientific and finally as psychical phenomenon as common and useful which constructs the research as having a worthy cause. This study leads on from Lamont’s (2007) discourse
analysis into the beginnings of Psychical research being constructed as scientific. This research will allow for understanding into how Psychical research tries self-defining in recent times and a future direction it states to be heading in.

The use of silence in the instrumental works of

▼ There is a bit of deception, at once familiar and
enjoyable, in the finale of Haydn’s Quartet, opus 33, number 2,
which causes amusement every time it is heard. The uninitiated
listener is thrown off guard while the initiated enjoys watching
the former’s good natured embarrassment. Here is how the deception
works. Towards the end of the movement, after one of the many
returns to the main theme of this rondo, Haydn introduces a few
measures of Adagio followed by the “a” theme of the quick tempo,
this time spelled out a phrase at a time with two measures of
general rest separating each phrase. Like students in a class in
harmonic dictation we hear phrase one – two measures of rest (all
four instruments silent), phrase two– two measures of rest, phrase
three– two measures of rest, and then phrase four with an
unmistakable final phrase; and this is really the end.
In
Siegfried’s Funeral Music from Wagner’s Twilight of the Gods, there
are long, solemn phrases between somber sounds, as though Time not
measured off by sound were an Eternity, or No-Time. In the sixth
measure of Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun there is a
languorous wait before a reusing out of reverie. In Schubert’s
Unfinished Symphony there is a tapering off at the end of the
passage where the violins have taken up the lyrical second theme
after its announcement by the cellos. The sound is left dangling on
the last half beat of the measure by virtue of the full measure of
G. P. which follows, which, in turn, is interrupted by a C minor
chord, fortissimo-diminuendo and tremulant.
The common ingredient
in all these examples is a segment where all sound is stopped;
there is a total silence in all voices, and the silence is of long
enough duration that we are made aware of the silence for its own
sake. Reflection on this device as used in these particular pieces,
and in others, stimulated the author’s curiosity as to how
widespread the use of silence is among composers, and as to how
long a history it has in instrumental music. Speculation as to the
possibility of classifying the musical situations under which such
silences are encountered and noting trends of usage with individual
composers or within entire periods has led to the present
investigation.
Little need be added to the implication of the
title as to the scope of this thesis, save, perhaps, that the term
“instrumental” here includes keyboard works as well as works for
orchestra, chamber music ensembles, and the like.
Procedure is as
follows: Chapter I includes a discussion as to what constitutes
silence in music, and a classification of silences based upon the
points at which they occur in forms, the nature of the passages in
which they are included, and the effects, subjective or otherwise,
they may produce. Subsequent chapters deal with individual
composers or with convenient groups of composers showing the manner
or frequency of their use of this device.
Statistical data
contained in this study is approximate and should be given broad
interpretation.

▼ Routine testing of the urine of diabetic patients for the presence and amount of sugar and acetone is a standard procedure on hospital wards. However, studies have demonstrated a significant human error factor in the results of these tests. The purpose of this study was to measure the presence and degree of bias on urine sugar and acetone tests as performed by hospital nursing personnel. The two types of bias considered were (1) the influence of the concentration of sugar in the urine on the interpretation of acetone concentration, and (2) the influence of prior knowledge of a patient’s past urine sugar and acetone on subsequent urine tests. The sample 122 included 51 registered nurses, 47 licensed practical nurses, and 24 nurse’s aids or orderlies in staff positions in two general hospitals. Each subject test six urine specimens previously prepared to exact concentrations by the investigator. A questionnaire designed to measure the subject’s knowledge of diabetic urine test, his educational preparation, and the frequency with which the subject performed the test on hospital wards was completed by each subject following completion of the urine testing. The influence of these variables on the amount of bias was examined. Variation in sugar concentration from high to low did not influence (or bias) the interpretation of acetone concentration by hospital nursing personnel. This lack of bias on acetone was maintained when the actual concentration of acetone was varied from moderate to negative. Prior knowledge of a patient’s past acetone values was found to bias subsequent acetone readings by nursing personnel. The bias was in the direction of earlier tests. Prior knowledge of the sugar values did not, however, show a influence on subsequent readings. Neither the subject’s knowledge about diabetic urine tests nor his educational preparation was found to have any relation to the degree of bias he possessed. However, the frequency with which the subject performed urine test on the hospital wards had a positive correlation to the amount of bias. A mean error score of 34 percent was shown in answer to test items measuring the subject’s knowledge of basic facts about diabetic urine tests. Licensed practical nurses had a statistically greater error score than did registered nurses. No statistical difference between any of the groups on accuracy in performance of the urine tests was found. However, the overall mean error score for all 122 subjects on performance of the 1 2 urine test was 4.3, meaning 36 percent of all reported readings were in error. This study thus demonstrated that significant errors in urine testing for sugar and acetone are made by all groups of nursing personnel employed in an adult medical-surgical hospital service. These errors bear no relation to the educational level attained by the individual tested, and they appear to be increased with those individuals who perform the test most frequently. Furthermore, the reliability of these tests is impaired when the subject has knowledge of the patient’s…

▼ Analysis of hair for the detection of illegal and therapeutic drugs has become a widely accepted alternative or complementary method to traditional urinalysis. Hair pigmentation has been shown to play a role in the incorporation of drug into hair. Drug basicity has increased the incorporation of certain basic compounds, such as cocaine, codeine, amphetamine, and phencyclidine, into pigmented hair compared to non-pigmented hair through their interactions with melanin in hair. However, the nonbasic cannabinoids should not show the same differential incorporation as do some basic drugs. We hypothesized that delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and 11 -nor-delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THCA) incorporated into hair by a mechanism independent of melanin binding. THC and THCA in pigmented and nonpigmented hair collected from Long-Evans rats administered THC did not statistically differ. Cultured pigmented melanocytes (PM) and nonpigmented melanocytes (NPM) were employed to examine the effect of pigmentation on the influx and efflux of THC and THCA into and out of hair cell types. There was no difference in the influx of THC and THCA into PM and NPM, with the exception of THC in NPM at 15s and 150 min The efflux of THC and THCA further support the hypothesis that factor/s other than pigmentation effect cannabinoid retention in PM and NPM. There was no significant difference between the amount of THC effluxed from PM and NPM. THCA efflux from PM was significantly greater than NPM at 1,5, 30, and 60 min. Indirect immunofluorescence was used to observe sites of THC and COC (positive control) localization within the hair follicle. No fluorescence was evident in either pigmented or nonpigmented hair follicle sections at any time after a single dose of THC. After multiple administrations, THC was localized with epidermal keratins and sebaceous glands, not the melanosomes of the hair follicle. In contrast to THC, COC associated with the dense population of melanosomes in the cortex of the pigmented hair follicle. In conclusion, the data presented in this dissertation demonstrate that THC and THCA incorporate into hair by a mechanism independent of hair pigmentation, and suggest its incorporation is influenced by the indirect deposition via sebum and skin.
