▼ This thesis concerns the study of selected Ceratocystis species and Ophiostoma species infecting wounds on broad-leaved trees, particularly those occurring in Africa. However, two chapters also deal with these fungi from Australia, Norway, Sweden and Austria. The dissertation is comprised of a literature review, followed by four research chapters, addressing the occurrence of Ceratocystis spp. and Ophiostoma spp. in Africa, Australia and Norway. The first chapter of the dissertation is a review of Ceratocystis spp. and Ophiostoma spp. with particular reference to Africa, hardwood tree species and wound infections. The review highlights the importance of wood and trees, especially on the African continent, and discusses the threat of deforestation. This is despite efforts by many African countries to establish forests of non-native tree species to address the demand for wood and wood products on the continent. Reforestation is associated with increased risks of the introduction of pests and pathogens, including species of Ceratocystis and Ophiostoma. The taxonomic history of these two fungal genera is summarized, and the review further focuses on the economically important species in these genera, particularly those infecting hardwood tree species on the African continent. The lack of information regarding Ceratocystis spp. and Ophiostoma spp. on hardwood trees in Africa is thus highlighted. Furthermore, the review summarised the dispersal mechanisms of these pathogens, highlighting dispersal too and infection of wounds. Ceratocystis pirilliformis was described in 2003 and it is the only species in the Ceratocystis fimbriata species complex that has pear-shaped ascomatal bases. This fungus was first described from Australia where Eucalyptus spp. are endemic. It was later reported from South Africa on Eucalyptus grandis trees. Chapter two of this dissertation attempts to address questions regarding the geographic distribution, impact and origin of C. pirilliformis in South Africa. This was in line with the fact that it has been suggested that the fungus is likely native to Australia. To address this question, surveys were conducted in many Eucalyptus planting areas in South Africa and the genetic diversity of the fungus in the country was investigated using microsatellite markers previously developed for C. fimbriata. C. pirilliformis was found in three Eucalyptus-growing areas of South Africa, which has considerably increased the known geographic range of the fungus in South Africa. The gene diversity as well as the genotypic diversity for the fungus was found to be very low in the country and the population is apparently clonal. Results thus support the view that C. pirilliformis was accidentally introduced into South Africa. In chapter three of this dissertation, O. quercus is reported for the first time from wounds on non-native Acacia mearnsii in Uganda. In addition a new Pesotum sp., P. australi prov. nom. is described from wounds on native A. mearnsii in Australia. Dans le cadre du projet ECOMEF visant à éco-concevoir un outil de bûcheronnage pour la mécanisation des peuplements feuillus, les travaux de thèse présentés ici concernent la modélisation du système bois court, et plus particulièrement des opérations d’abattage et de façonnage (ébranchage et billonnage). Des modèles ont été développés afin d’étudier la transmission de l’effort d’entraînement au tronc par les rouleaux ainsi que l’opération d’ébranchage par choc. Parallèlement, différents démonstrateurs ont été réalisés afin de mener un certain nombre d’essais expérimentaux, qui ont permis, d’une part, une meilleure compréhension des phénomènes étudiés, et d’autre part le recalage des modèles théoriques. Enfin, une simulation dynamique multicorps a été mise en place, afin d’étudier plus précisément l’adaptation de différentes architectures cinématiques de châssis articulés aux flexuosités du tronc rencontrées dans les essences feuillues. Celle-ci intègre l’ensemble des modèles analytiques développés et permet une approche globale à travers l’interaction des modèles les uns avec les autres.

The research work presented here and realized within the framework of the ECOMEF project - which aims to develop a harvester head more specifically designed to process and fell broad-leaved trees – focuses on the modeling of the cut-to-length logging process, and particularly on the felling and processing (delimbing and bucking) operations. Several models have been developed in order to study the transmission of the feed force to the trunk or the delimbing process. In the same time, different benches have been designed in order to carry out experimental tests that allow a better understanding of the considered phenomenons as well as the experimental characterization of the models’ parameters. Finally, a multi-body dynamic simulation has been developed, in order to study the adaptation of different kinematic architectures of articulated frames to the crooked trunks specific to broad-leaved trees. This simulation contains each analytic model and allow a global study of the phenomenon by considering the interaction between each model.

Managed forest landscapes in Sweden are dominated by boreal coniferous forest and are deficient in broad-leaved trees. Both beavers (Castor fiber) and ungulate browsers prefer broad-leaved trees to conifers, and the interaction between multiple herbivores may have a considerable impact on the recruitment of deciduous trees in riparian areas. To evaluate the relative importance of beavers and browsers on tree recruitment, I conducted an inventory of broad-leaved tree species at five beaver sites in Färnebofjärden National Park, Sweden. At each site, five transects were established perpendicular to the shoreline in the riparian zone, resulting in a grid of 35 sample plots at each beaver site. Foraging activity of both beavers and browsers (e.g. ungulates) was concentrated to a narrow band in the riparian zone and there was a decrease in the proportion of beaver-cut and browsed trees further away from the shoreline. Beavers preferred birch (Betula spp.) and grey willow (Salix cinerea) while browsers preferred oak (Quercus robur). Beavers targeted larger trees while browsers targeted seedlings <1 cm in diameter. Old-growth trees of high conservation value, such as aspen (Populus tremula) and birch, are at risk to be cut by beaver, yet long-term protection of broad-leaved stands requires a shift in focus towards strategies that enhance tree recruitment by considering and mitigating pressure from multiple herbivores.

Svenska skogslandskap domineras av boreal barrskog med en brist på lövträd. Både bäver (Castor fiber) och betande klövvilt föredrar lövträd framför barrträd, och interaktionen mellan dessa herbivorer kan ha en betydande påverkan på föryngring av lövträd i strandnära skogar. För att utvärdera den relativa betydelsen av bävrar och betare på trädföryngring så genomförde jag en inventering av lövträdsarter och betestryck vid fem bäverlokaler i Färnebofjärden Nationalpark, Sverige. Vid varje bäverlokal lades fem transekter i rät vinkel mot strandkanten i den strandnära zonen, med provrutor var femte meter längs varje transekt, vilket resulterade i ett nätverk av 35 provrutor vid varje lokal. Både bävrars och betares (dvs. klövvilts) födosökande var begränsat till ett smalt band längs strandkanten, och andelen bävergnagda och betade trädstammar minskade med ökat avstånd från strandkanten. Bäver föredrog björk och gråvide medan betare föredrog ek. Bäver föredrog större träd medan betare föredrog groddplantor <1 cm i diameter. Gamla lövträd som är viktiga att bevara, såsom asp och björk, hotas av bäveraktivitet, men långsiktigt bevarande av lövträdsbestånd kräver ett fokus på strategier som främjar trädföryngring, bland annat genom att beakta och begränsa den sammantagna påverkan av olika herbivorers betning.

▼ Boswellia papyrifera(Burseraceae) trees grow in drylands south of the Sahara. In Ethiopia, it grows in seasonally dry Combretum-Terminalia woodlands. It is a source of frankincense, an economically important olio-gum resin used for cultural and religious ceremonies throughout the world and as raw material in several industries. Ethiopia is a major exporter of frankincense. Currently, the populations of this species are threatened by farmland expansion, fire, overgrazing, improper tapping techniques and possibly also by climate change. Focussing on tree ring analyses and resin-production related bark anatomical features, this study had two objectives. The first objective was to quantify the status of B. papyrifera populations with respect to radial stem-growth dynamics and size and age structure. Based on analysis of wood structure and crossdating of tree-rings series, it is shown that B. papyriferaforms annual growth rings and that the average age of sampled B. papyrifera trees is 76 years.More importantly, it is shown that the B. papyrifera populations lack trees that recruited over the last 55 years (1955-2010), and that the remnant trees established continuously between 1903 and 1955. This lack of successful recruitment for such a long period of time is attributed to continuous disturbances, such as fire and grazing accompanying new settlements of people into the area over the past decades. Radial growth patterns over decades suggest effects of heavy disturbances that the trees were experiencing. Remarkably, B. papyrifera trees showed a 2-3 year cycle in annual radial growth, and responded significantly to climate. As expected, radial growth increased with rainfall. An increase in ring width with maximum temperature may reflect radiation limits on growth. Radial growth decreased with increasing minimum temperatures, which may reflect temperature impacts on respiration. Overall, the predicted increase in temperature and rainfall for Ethiopia may not pose a direct threat for this species. The second objective of this study was to describe the resin-secretory structure in the bark of B. papyrifera. The aim was to understand the relationship between structure and functioning of the secretory system with special reference to implications for frankincense yield and improvements of current tapping techniques. Resin canals of B. papyrifera form a three-dimensional network within the inner bark. In the wood, only few radial resin canals were encountered. The intact resin-producing and transporting network is on average limited to the inner 6.6 mm of the inner bark. Within the inner bark, the density of non-lignified axial resin canals decreases from the vascular cambium towards the outer bark. We also show that whole tree properties, such astotal resin-canal area in the bark, stem diameter, tree age, and the number of leaf apices impact frankincense yield. Its total length is 81 kilometer and total basin area is 475 square kilometer. The natural forest communities are mostly in the upper section and fragmentarily spread in the small areas that locate between farms or in complicated topography, e.g. steep slope, area difficult to reach. It is necessary to make inventory and research about these natural forest communities now to gather sufficient vegetation data which will be served as basic reference in the future local environmental management. This study is to investigate and analyze the species composition of broad-leaved forest vegetation in the upper section of Pa-Chang River. The analysis results of the vegetation data by detrended correspondence analysisï¼DCAï¼ and two-way indicator species analysisï¼TWINSPANï¼classified the sampling plots into four forest types: I. Litsea hypophaea forest type The range of elevation is 743~1003 m. The topographic position is mainly in ridge and upper slope. II. Ficus irisana -Dendrocnide meyeniana forest type The range of elevation is 381~825 mãThe topographic position is mainly in lower slope and valley. III. Machilus japonica var. kusanoi -Ficus fistulosa forest type The range of elevation is 764~1229 mã IV. Prunus phaeosticta forest type The range of elevation is 1559~1804 m. The topographic position is mainly in upper slope. The study of correlations among environmental gradients and ordination axes indicated that the elevation is the most important environmental factor affecting the vegetation composition and distribution. Topographic position also has obvious influence on vegetation. In addition, the study of population structure shows that regeneration is continuous in present broad-leaved forest, but the forest is also continuously disturbed by artificial activities. The area of natural forest in this area might continuously be decreased, so it is important to gather sufficient vegetation data in time. Močvirnice (rod Epipactis) predstavljajo taksonomsko zapleteno skupino nižjih taksonov znotraj družine kukavičevk. Težave pri identifikaciji in taksonomskem razvrščanju povzročajo velike razlike v morfoloških in fenotipskih lastnostih in ožja genetska sorodnost taksonov, ki je bila do sedaj slabo raziskana. Močvirnice v Sloveniji do sedaj še niso bile vključene v molekulske raziskave. Namen magistrske naloge je bil sistematično obdelati morfološke značilnosti osebkov iz različnih populacij na območju Goričkega. Proučene osebke smo glede na morfološke značilnosti hipotetično uvrstili v oblikovni krog širokolistne močvirnice. Med osebki znotraj populacij in med populacijami smo ugotovili statistično značilne razlike v dolžini plodnice in medene ustne (hipohil, epihil) ter v dolžini in širini čašnih in venčnih listov. Na podlagi morfoloških podatkov, povzetih po literaturi, smo za posamezne morfotipe iz Goričkega, izdelali model, na podlagi katerega smo jih glede na uporabljene morfološke parametre uvrstili v pripadajoče vrste. S pretočno citometrijo smo na podlagi velikosti genoma proučene osebke razvrstili v tri homogene skupine. Uporaba AFLP molekulskih markerjev se je izkazala kot zelo koristna pri razvrščanju ožje sorodnih morfotipov, medtem ko je bila uporaba ITS koristna le pri razvrščanju višjih taksonomskih skupin. V magistrski nalogi je zajet le manjši sklop večletnih raziskav, ki so še v teku. Rezultati so pokazali, da je pri reševanju taksonomskih odnosov znotraj rodu Epipactis ključna uporaba ustrezne kombinacije molekulskih in morfoloških markerjev.

The helleborines (the genus Epipactis) represent a complex group of lower taxa within the Orchidaceae family. Problems associated with identification and taxonomic classification are considered to be mainly due to big differences in morphological and phenotypic properties and close genetic relationships among taxa, and have not been studied much so far. The broad-leaved helleborines in Slovenia have not yet been included in molecular studies. The main objective of this master's thesis was to analyse crucial morphological characteristics of specimens from different populations from the Goričko region (SE Slovenia). Based on morphological characteristics, the investigated specimens were hypothetically classified into the group of broad-leaved heleborines. We documented significant differences within and between populations in the length of ovary, hypochil and epychil, and in the length and width of sepals and petals. For individual morphotypes from Goričko, we developed a model based on the morphological data taken from literature, which enabled us to classify them to corresponding species. With the flow cytometry, based on the genome size, the studied specimens were divided into three homogeneous groups. The use of AFLPs proved to be very useful in classifying closely related morphotypes, while the use of ITS was helpful only in classifying higher taxonomic groups. ▼ This research Beyond ‘Green’ Streets identifies significant gaps in theory and practice and proposes, develops and applies new techniques to mitigate climate change through residential street design. References to ‘green’ or ‘sustainable’ streetscape designs are increasingly evident in the policy and planning literature. However objectives are vaguely defined, integrated quantitative emissions data on street design is relatively unavailable and integrated modelling in street environments is largely absent. Most of the CO2 research literature on street environments has been undertaken within specialised disciplines such as engineering, arboriculture and climatology. Few studies have drawn together the natural and constructed features for streets or tested design modifications that could mitigate CO2. The absence of data on street design and CO2 performance makes it difficult to define appropriate targets and evaluate policy ambitions that seek to face the problem of climate change. The research draws together different street components and layouts to evaluate the CO2 emissions profile and abatement potential for residential streets in Sydney, Australia. The method developed an integrated CO2 emissions model based on its current physical layout and operational use. The street’s constructed elements including kerbs, carriageways, lanes, parking bays were combined with the street’s natural elements, specifically street trees. Sequestration and shading performance for a range of street tree species was estimated using a combination of new and existing modelling techniques including terrestrial laser scanning and climate housing simulation software. Simulations of street retrofit scenarios and new street designs were developed and evaluated. Streets, as relatively stable components of urban form, and as essential functional entities spanning large areas offer substantial mitigation potential. The results showed that dramatic increases in CO2 abatement could be achieved through minor street design modifications. Street retrofits that relied solely on modifications to street trees could achieve almost 7 times more CO2 abatement than a standard street design and 10 times more CO2 abatement when modest design changes were adopted into new street layouts. Opportunities for implementation in policy have been developed in recognition of the complicated management and ownership context of streets. Fundamental obstacles to implementation are also identified. Consistent comparable data that can leverage the optimum climate mitigation and adaptation benefits from these urban forms represents a new opportunity for research and practice. This study lays the basis for design professionals and authorities to test and calculate optimum street configurations and allows governments to make informed decisions, set targets and measure outcomes for these essential public assets.

▼ In a contemporary local context characterised by significant socio-economic challenges, exacerbated by rising systemic risks, and hampered by capacity constraints of the state, we examine the case for a strategic approach to corporate social responsibility (CSR) as risk management for the public good. In this study, we propose that CSR could offer value as risk management to firm stakeholders and broader society, by aligning state, business, and societal objectives in tackling shared risk and by addressing some of the challenges associated with contemporary CSR practice. The objectives of this thesis were, therefore, twofold. First, to explain the relevance between the concepts of risk management and CSR and how a strategic approach to CSR as risk management may operate as a mechanism influencing practice and impact. Second, to analyse such an approach in practice to interrogate our propositions of CSR as risk management and to identify its key enabling and disabling factors. To achieve the first objective, we developed a theoretical and conceptual framework that positions CSR as a necessary and appropriate strategic risk management response to inefficient and inequitable markets. To achieve our second objective, we undertook an instrumental case study of Santam Limited and its proactive, pro-social risk management initiative, Partners for Risk and Resilience (P4RR). Using a critical realist case study approach, we interviewed 22 participants drawn from the company’s social and organisational contexts. Our findings suggest that the interaction of four principal stakeholder entities gave rise to P4RR: investors, company management, employees, and the state, and we would characterise the primary mechanism driving the Initiative as competitive pressures emanating from the market. Our findings broadly support our propositions that risk management is a useful analytical framework for CSR and, as a strategic approach, may encourage firm-wide integration of CSR practice and cooperation with salient stakeholders, while providing a rubric with which to evaluate its usefulness. Our findings are somewhat supportive of the proposition that such an approach may lead to a response to uncertainty that aligns more closely with economic risk management. Recommendations for future research include multiple case study analyses of different companies that engage in risk management for the public good. Strategically, we recommend the elevation of local government planning processes as a tool with which to align corporate pro-social activities to maximise the contribution to the public good. ▼ When fed on by insect herbivores, plants respond dynamically, resulting in far-reaching ecological and economic consequences. For example, when an insect begins to damage leaf tissue, the plant initiates production of within plant signaling molecules (phytohormones) that regulate defenses, including the production of airborne volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These VOCs are attractive to beneficial insects such as predators and parasitoids that feed on the insect pest, resulting in reduced damage to the plant. This specialized attraction of beneficial insects by VOCs released from damaged plants is a well-studied symbiosis and is the foundation for biological control of many economically important crop pests. By utilizing several research tools, we have explored how plants respond to herbivore damage and how aphids affect plant defense responses. First, we found that the pea aphid, Acyrthsiphon pisum, has the ability to attenuate plant defense responses. Pea aphids not only evaded plant defenses, and also inhibited VOCs induced by concurrent damage from caterpillar feeding, but increased emission of aphid alarm pheromone as a result of crowding conditions. This increased emission of alarm pheromone was correlated with alate formation of nearby pea aphids. Additional studies indicated that aphid feeding interfered with induction and accumulation of the defense-related phytohormone jasmonic acid (JA). Lastly, we discovered that aphid honeydew directly interferes with damage-induced phytohormone accumulation. Analysis of pea aphid honeydew indicated high levels of the important defense-related phytohormone salicylic acid (SA) and confirmed the ability of SA to attenuate damage-induced JA. While SA has long been known to interfere with defense-related JA signaling, and has been associated with aphid feeding, this is the first time it has been described as a potential direct mechanism that may be partially responsible for the observed attenuation of plant defense responses.

CAPITULO II: O desenvolvimento do esqueleto torna-se melhor compreendido, mediante novas descobertas, haja vista um tecido referencialmente em dinâmico processo de formação e reabsorção. Neste estudo foi utilizado um exemplar de Caiman latirostris, macho, adulto juvenil (entre de 5 a 8 anos) medindo em torno de 1,50m de comprimento, pertencente ao acervo do Laboratório de Ensino e Pesquisa em Animais Silvestres, da Universidade Federal de Uberlândia, fixado em formol a 10%. Inicialmente foi realizada a retirada da pele, vísceras e musculatura associada aos ossos da cintura peitoral, estilopódio e zeugopódio do C. latirostris, seguida de identificações ósseas, registradas através de fotografias com câmera digital, e finalmente descritas anatomicamente. Os resultados demonstraram que o C. latirostris apresenta características anatômicas ósseas da cintura peitoral, estilopódio e zeugopódio semelhantes aos seus ancestrais, extensivas aos demais crocodilianos, visto que há similaridades comportamentais inter e intraespecíficas. CAPITULO III: Objetivou – se identificar os parâmetros de origem e inserção musculares da cintura peitoral, estilopódio e zeugopódio do Caiman latirostris, mediante abordagem anatômica, cinesiológica e biomecânica básica. Foi utilizado um exemplar de Caiman latirostris, macho, adulto juvenil (entre 5 a 8 anos) medindo em torno de 1,50 m de comprimento, pertencente ao acervo do Laboratório de Ensino e Pesquisa em Animais Silvestres, da Universidade Federal de Uberlândia. Foram realizados os procedimentos de dissecação, iniciados com um uma incisão longitudinal, ao longo da linha mediana ventral do tronco, rebatendo-se a pele lateralmente, da região cervical até o nível torácico. Na seqüência, foi realizada a individualização muscular da cintura peitoral, estilopódio e zeugopódio, seguida da identificação dos músculos e, por conseguinte, retirada dos membros, para melhor observação das origens e inserções musculares. No presente estudo, em caráter observacional, foi notada postura isométrica entremeando movimentos rotativos, além de grande área de secção transversa, na maioria dos músculos extensores e estabilizadores, conferindo aos mesmos, maior força, denotando inferências funcionais e organizacionais. A partir dos resultados encontrados e, devidamente documentados, torna-se possível reconhecer e predefinir o comportamento da espécie investigada, relacionando duração, direção e dimensão dos níveis de ação. Acredita-se que a ação muscular esteja associada à necessidade da espécie, e à filogenia.

▼ This thesis involves the experimental testing of a bluff body with a blunt base to evaluate the effectiveness of end-plate tabs in reducing drag. The bluff body is fitted with interchangeable end plates; one plate is flush with the rest of the exterior and the other plate has small tabs protruding perpendicularly into the flow. The body is tested in the Cal Poly 3ft x 4ft low speed wind tunnel. Testing is conducted in three phases. The first phase was the hot-wire measurement of streamwise velocity of the near wake behind the bluff body. An IFA300 thermal anemometry system with a hot-wire probe placed behind the model measures the wake velocity fluctuations. The power spectral density on the model without tabs shows large spikes at Strouhal numbers of 0.266, 0.300, and 0.287 at corresponding Re = 41,400, 82,800, 124,200 where vortex shedding occurs. The model with tabs shows no such peaks in power and therefore has attenuated vortex generation in the wake flow at that location. The second phase of testing was pressure testing the model through the use of pressure ports on the exterior of the bluff body. A Scanivalve pressure transducer measured multiple ports almost simultaneously through tubing that was connected to the model internally and routed through the model’s strut mount and outside of the wind tunnel. This pressure testing shows that the model with tabs is able to achieve up to 36% increase in C_p at Re_h = 41,400 on the base region of the bluff body and no negative pressure spikes that occur as a result of vortex shedding. The last phase of testing is the measurement of total drag on the model through a sting balance mount. This testing shows that the drag on the model is reduced by 14% at Re = 41,400. However it also shows that as velocity increased, the drag reduction is reduced and ultimately negated at Re = 124,200 with no drag loss at all. The addition of tabs as a passive flow control device did eliminate vortex shedding and alter the base pressure of the bluff body. This particular model however showed no reduction in total drag on the model at high Reynolds numbers higher than 124,000. Further study is necessary to isolate the exact geometry and flow velocities that should be able to produce more favorable drag results for a bluff body with this type of passive flow control device. ▼ Tailings storage facilities (TSFs) and conventional water retaining dams are the largest manmade structures on Earth. Statistics show that TSFs are more likely to fail than water retaining dams.Recent catastrophic failures of TSFs have led to the loss of lives (Germano mine, Brazil), environmental damage (Mount Polley, Canada), contamination of drinking water (Baia Mare, Romania), and the destruction of property (Kingston Fossil Plant, USA). As the scale of mining increases, TSFs increase in height and volume, therefore increasing the consequence of failure. To help mitigate risk associated with large TSFs mining companies empanel expert groups to review operations of TSFs and conduct regular visual inspections. In the US the Mine Safety and Health Administration has regulatory responsibility for the safety of TSFs. As population centers expand nearer to existing and proposed TSFs, the public requires assurance of the integrity of these structures. A pro-active approach to public safety is more desirable than a post-mortem analysis after a major failure. We have examined both the regulatory practices, the industry practices, and public data on TSFs in Arizona. In this thesis paper we address inadequacies of the official government records on TSFs in the two largest publicly accessible databases of dams inthe US – the National Inventory of Dams (NID), and the National Performance of Dams Program (NPDP). Both databases contain numerous errors and omissions, including descriptions and geographic coordinates of TSFs that are inaccurate by many kilometers. Several large TSFs in Arizona are not included in either database.We address these shortcomings with a pilot project for Arizona that demonstrates recording accurate information in a database is neither expensive nor onerous, communicating best practices for operation can help alleviate community concerns, and continuous monitoring technology can resolve shortcomings with visual inspections.
