▼ Tourism in its political and social forms has always been an affective, embodied experience. These affective experiences have occurred in
tourism to historic Palestine, both in the colonial context and in decolonial resistance. Recently, “
alternative tours” to historic Palestine have become affective, embodied experiences that explicate the politics of the region from the perspective of Palestinians. Given the political nature of “
alternative tours,” Palestinian and Israeli tour guides find themselves managing the affects and feelings of the tourist to whom they impart their narrative, both reifying and critiquing liberal discourses that prioritize the comfort of privileged groups, at the expense of the marginalized. In my second chapter, I explain some of these affective techniques. Later in my two subsequent chapters, I describe three objects of analysis through which Palestinian and Israeli tour guides modulate the affects of their tourists, in order to provide them a controlled, truncated, and safe experience. Such an experience imparts a taste of the constant affective, sensory, and tactile elements of the occupation wielded against Palestinians, but upon tourists primarily from the Western world. These controlled affects are meant to attempt to jolt Western tourists into action, inspired by their emotional experiences. I take up each of these three themes based on ethnographic work on one four-day tour package with the company Green Olive Tours (GOT); I explain how the discourses that tour guides use become affective. First, I describe how Ido’s tour of Jerusalem problematizes the affect of the notion that Israel is in a two-sided conflict with Palestinians. Second, I show how Yaqoub and Muhannad make Bethlehem and Hebron into an experience of “gazing back” affectively at oppressive technologies of surveillance. Finally, I argue that two sites in Nablus force tourists to feel haunting of ancestors with regard to temporality, and take their shock with them after the tour. These are fundamentally affective strategies of
alternative tourism.

▼ Volunteer
tourism is a significant feature of the
tourism industry. The phenomenon can be described as a practice where people (typically from ‘developed’ countries) participate in working holidays, generally to assist areas of need. Specifically focusing on Global Volunteers in Rarotonga in the Cook Islands, this study examined the development implications of volunteer
tourism with particular emphasis on the relationship between Global Volunteers and development outcomes, the role of culture and the nature of power within the Global Volunteer programme in Rarotonga.
The study took a qualitative approach to gain an insight into the experiences, stories and understandings of the volunteers, hosts and country managers involved in Global Volunteers in Rarotonga. Semi-structured and unstructured interviews and participant observation were carried out.
The study questioned the notion that volunteer
tourism could be linked to development. Despite the positive outcomes and valuable contribution that volunteers made, there was not a strong correlation between the practice and development outcomes. The nature of power was regarded as a significant and complex aspect of volunteer
tourism. Power was revealed in both strong and subtle ways and the relationship between those involved was not merely the powerful verses the powerless. Culture was expressed as an authentic and everyday process which led to instances of cultural clashes and opportunities for cultural collaboration. However, deep cultural understanding was not easily obtained through participation in the volunteer programme.
The study argued that volunteer
tourism was neither good nor bad. However, the key feature of the volunteer programme involved the agency and ownership possessed by the host organisations to actively work with volunteer
tourism organisations to define the type of assistance that the volunteers carried out.

The surf tourism in the Azores is a cluster to be developed, with few local surfers and low demand. Surf represents an opportunity to explore, possibly an important tourism product for the islands. This dissertation aims at analysing the potential of the Azores for the practice of surf and to propose actions to value this activity as a tourism product of the region.
In this context, in the first part of the dissertation the art state concerning nature tourism and sports, as well as the association of surf and tourism, is analysed. Them, the analysis of the surf as a tourism product in the Azores is carried out, including the characterization of the tourism activity and surfing in the territory, the application of a questionnaire to the surf practitioners and the identification and characterization of the main surf spots in the archipelago.
The results confirm that Azores has potential to develop surf as a tourism product; there are several spots with potential to practice this activity. Even though the development of the activity has been observed in São Miguel Island, this in itself is a weak point, being recommended the development in the other islands.
Consequently, several proposals were defined in order to contribute to increase the value of surf as a tourism product in the archipelago. Furthermore, the development of surf contributes to the diversity, dynamics and qualification of the present tourism supply and to the sustainable development of surf…

▼ Community-based tourism (CBT) provides an attractive alternative to mass tourism. In Bali, Indonesia, it is a potentially significant contributor to tourism development. The aim of this research was to obtain a greater understanding of CBT through an examination of relevant issues, and the perceptions of the host communities and tourists regarding CBT products. This study used a mixed methods approach to collect data from the host communities and tourists who visited the villages in Bali.
Five main elements of CBT products came to light during a review of the literature in the preliminary phase of the research. Subsequently, aspects of authenticity and change for development as important features of sustainable CBT products were identified and added to the study during the qualitative phase of the research. At the conclusion of Research Phase 1, the qualitative stage, four additional elements had been identified, making a total of 10. These 10 CBT product elements were then further subdivided and formed the variables for the data collection instrument used in Research Phase 2, the quantitative study.
The Research Phase 1 qualitative results indicate that the CBT tourists clearly identified their expectations of CBT products and were supportive of a sustainable industry to preserve the villagers‟ way of life and the rural environment. However, they were also concerned about safety and hygiene. The Research Phase 2 quantitative results consistently show similar findings. Furthermore, a significant number of tourists expressed a willingness to use and consume products and services provided by the community.
As part of the research, two types of CBT tourists were identified – „overnighters‟ and “daytrippers‟. Both groups sought the same type of attractions, albeit in different degrees of intensity, yet they required different types and standards of services and facilities. The overnighter group intermingled, they wanted to experience the local culture and lifestyle, and were more accepting of the local amenities. By contrast, the daytrippers experienced a snap-shot of village life while on excursions away from their resort hotel accommodation.
The Research Phase 1 qualitative results show that the host communities were aware ofthe intrinsic value of the tourist attractions in their villages, but lacked the confidence to share them with visitors. The community respondents in this phase of the study also demonstrated limited awareness of tourists‟ needs. The Research Phase 2 quantitative results indicate an adequate understanding of CBT features, but enhancements were needed in some areas, such as product packaging, information and narration, and service provision.
Tri hita karana (THK) is a Balinese life value that has been adopted as an underpinning principle of a sustainable approach to tourism development in Bali. According to the principles of THK, a harmonious balance within and between the three relationships of a human to Universe-spirit, a human to humans, and a human to nature is necessary for human contentment.…

This thesis, based on the study of small-scale alternative tourism in two rural communities in Guatemala, examines the role of foreign visitors in the making of the touristic discourse, as well as the manner in which the tour and its actors relate to local politics. The history of the studied groups is rooted in the internal armed conflict: they are ex-guerillas or Ixil widows. Tourism is not their main occupation but an additional economic resource, as well as a stage for the performance of their identity and memory. These tours where not set up by foreign organizations; they fall within what can be called “bricolage”, their progressive making and adapting by local actors who rely on the help of acquaintanceship networks and international contacts –with the tourists themselves in the forefront. An analysis of the issues at stake concerning the touristic project emphasizes the importance of control over public (re)presentation of the identity of the group, both in the context of its insertion in transnational solidarity networks and in that of local power dynamics.

The municipality of São João da Barra, located in the region of the North Fluminense State of Rio de Janeiro, for possessing a vast natural wealth, especially beaches, is a popular location for tourism, mainly in the summer, time more conducive to bathing, also attracts a large demand of tourists through various events organized by prefecture, such as Carnival, resulting as a consequence the development of mass tourism. Furthermore, the municipality was chosen to host the Logistics and Industrial Complex Port of Açu (CLIPA), higher port-industry enterprise in Latin America, and one of the three largest port complexes in the world, which is under implementation. Before this scenario, considering the need to seek an alternative to mass tourism, as well as protect this tourist destination of the impacts caused by the same, and the port complex, the research aimed to identify the tourism potential of São João da…

▼ In the early 1980 the alternative tourism begins to gain strength in Brazilian market. This activity shows problems caused by mass tourism that explore fragile environment in an unthinking way putting the customs and habits of the local communities under threat as well as the local flora and fauna. In Paran? State there is a great potential to develop this kind of tourism activity in traditional communities. These communities are named faxinais, where is developed a community production with a joint area to raise animals in an environment of Arauc?ria Forest and private areas to plant. Nowadays there are about 44 faxinal areas in Center ?South of the State, 07 of them are located in Prudent?polis. For this reason the purpose of this research is to evaluate the touristic potential in faxinal communities of this borough. There are already areas around the faxinais exploring ecological tourism (visit to the waterfalls) and also the adventure tourism (rapel, trekking). Through Community Tourism, a tourist segmentation that fits in the alternative tourism and above all prioritizes the local community well-being, respecting their limits and desires and allowing that local people carry out the tourism management. So the intention of this study is the inclusion of the faxinal areas in this system. For this two complex of touristic narratives have been identified: ethnic(typical food, costumes, traditions, songs, dance, religion, everyday work) and the economic and technological history (subsistence agriculture, wood and erva-mate extraction, tropeirismo, pig rising and tobacco agribusiness). It is believed that this segmentation can mean an economical improvement for these communities and also the reservation of their cultural environment.

▼ This thesis is an investigation of inter-sectorial linkages between the
tourism and agriculture sectors.
Tourism presents an innate opportunity to create dynamic service systems that promote sustainable development in both developed and developing countries. The
alternative development paradigm promotes
tourism inter-sectoral linkages to achieve a more sustainable form of development. Agriculture and
Tourism Linkages are generally subscribed to as a means of distributing
tourism benefits to host communities in
tourism dependent developing countries. The supply of local food to hotels is one channel in which these linkages can be facilitated. For decades, research has found farmer-hotel supply chain relationships to be weak resulting in economic leakages due to high food importation to support the
tourism sector (Telfer & Wall, 1996; Torres, 2003). A framework within which these linkages can be strengthened is proposed. Instead of the traditional cost-driven transactional management of hotel supply chains, a service-oriented farmers-hotel supply chain is considered. This approach places greater value on local food as it becomes part of the visitors’ service experience. Investigations of two hotels’ local food supply chains indicated that the service oriented approach contributes to strengthening agriculture and
tourism linkages. Strengthened linkages using local food are expected to contribute to solving socio-economic challenges such as; unemployment among the rural poor, low income of farmers, food insecurity and poverty. This research provides useful insights for development planners, policy makers, service sector managers, academics and futuristic thinkers in the
tourism industry who are all in search of practical solutions to the
tourism development challenge highlighted.

▼ This research examines the evolution of nested markets in Hongdong Town, South Korea and their characteristics through a qualitative case study in order to open the opportunities to shape the nested markets so that they work well in regard to sustainable rural development. Specifically, this study is informed by an agro-ecological approach, and cross-disciplinary literatures in rural development, agrifood movement, and rural
tourism. Data are collected via 58 in-depth semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and examination documentation. Thematic analysis yielded three significant themes that have been developed into three separate manuscripts. The first manuscript describes and analyzes the dynamics of nested markets identified in Hongdong by tracking their historical roots and changes. Four different types of nested markets are identified and their particular mechanisms are discussed. The second manuscript examines the empowerment and disempowerment factors in the different types of nested markets, focusing primarily upon the participant farmers’ own experiences and interpretations. Democratic management, ideological struggle, participatory educations, and self-consciousness are underscored for a multi-dimensional approach to empowerment of small-scale farmers. The final manuscript examines the evolution of rural
tourism in Hongdong, and its links to agricultural changes, and traditional small farm survival, as part of sustainable rural development. The study shows that rural
tourism is neither a simple, business-oriented project nor a step-by-step process of
tourism development. It emerges, together with other nested markets in responds to the negative effects of the neoliberalist agrifood market.

Tourism is a powerful driver of socioeconomic and cultural development which became popular since the 50s, with the development of means of transport, the reduction in working hours, the right to paid holidays and the increased purchasing power of families. This increased popularity led to mass tourism and uneven temporal and geographical distribution of tourism demand, resulting in environmental, cultural and social problems.
Tourism seasonality contributed to the intensification of these problems. The fact that tourism in Portugal greatly depends on its main tourism product, Sun and Sea, also contributed to the intensifying of seasonality in the country.
Unlike coastal areas, that continue to be tourists? favorite destinations, rural areas have been dealing with social and economic decline, due to factors such as the loss of human capital to urban areas, facing a number of challenges that require appropriate rural development policies and more efficient use of available financial resources.
Rural tourism has come to stand out, not only as an alternative development strategy for economic and social regeneration of rural areas, but also as an alternative to mass tourism, minimizing the problems deriving from seasonality in Sun and Sea destinations.
Using the Delphi method, this study?s main objectives are to understand how rural tourism in Portugal has been contributing to…

▼ Many new forms of tourism have emerged over the past two decades claiming to provide an alternative, responsible approach to international travel. Unlike ecotourism and volunteer tourism, travel centered on solidarity activism has not been thoroughly explored in the academic literature. Through narrative interviews conducted with organizational staff, former travelers, and members of a rural host community, this study profiles three organizations that organize solidarity travel experiences in Nicaragua.
Qualitative analysis of the interviews and secondary materials including blog posts and videos reveals that staff, travelers and community members feel that they benefit from the exchanges that take place during solidarity travel. However, the study participants also articulated a number of concerns and issues with the practice of solidarity travel, including the limited nature of ongoing contact between travelers, coordinating organizations, and the communities that are visited while in Nicaragua. The experience of solidarity travel provided participants with a greater understanding of the connections between Nicaragua and North America, and a critical self-awareness for young travelers in particular, as many were experiencing the Global South for the first time. The successful translation of that exposure and awareness into activism is less certain and is identified as an area for future improvement of the overall solidarity travel experience.
Overall, this study contributes to the emerging literature on solidarity travel by comparing three organizations with different missions and methods, and showing how solidarity can be enacted in a variety of ways through travel. Through the inclusion of three distinct groups of participants, this study also highlights similarities and differences related to the way solidarity travel is experienced by members of these groups.

▼ Utilising a critical theoretical perspective, this work examines contemporary corporatised tourism and capitalist globalisation. This analysis suggests that marketisation limits the understanding of the purposes of tourism to its commercial and industrial features, thereby marginalising wider understandings of the social importance of tourism.
Sklairs conceptualisation of capitalist globalisation and its dynamics, as expressed in his sociology of the global system (2002), is employed to understand the corporatised tourism phenomenon. This thesis explains how a corporatised tourism sector has been created by transnational tourism and travel corporations, professionals in the travel and tourism sector, transnational practices such as the liberalisation being imposed through the General Agreement on Trade in Services negotiations and the culture-ideology of consumerism that tourists have adopted. This thesis argues that this reaps profits for industry and exclusive holidays for privileged tourists, but generates social and ecological costs which inspire vigorous challenge and resistance.
This challenge is most clearly evident in the alternative tourism movement which seeks to provide the equity and environmental sustainability undermined by the dynamics of corporatised tourism. Alternative tourism niches with a capacity to foster an eco-humanism are examined by focusing on ecotourism, sustainable tourism, pro-poor tourism, fair trade in tourism, community-based tourism, peace through tourism, volunteer tourism and justice tourism. While each of these demonstrates certain transformative capacities, some prove to be mild reformist efforts and others promise more significant transformative capacity. In particular, the niches of volunteer tourism and justice tourism demonstrate capacities to mount a vigorous challenge to both corporatised tourism and capitalist globalisation. Since the formation of the Global Tourism Interventions Forum (GTIF) at the World Social Forum gathering in Mumbai in 2004, justice tourism has an agenda focused on overturning corporatised tourism and capitalist globalisation, and inaugurating a new alternative globalisation which is both pro-people and sustainable.
Following the development of these original, macro-level conceptualisations of tourism and globalisation, this thesis presents a micro-level case study of an Indigenous Australian tourism enterprise which illustrates some of these dynamics in a local context. Camp Coorong Race Relations and Cultural Education Centre established and run by the Ngarrindjeri Aboriginal community of South Australia has utilised tourism to foster greater equity and sustainability by working towards reconciliation through tourism. The Ngarrindjeri have also experienced conflicts generated from the pressures of inappropriate tourism development which has necessitated an additional strategy of asserting their Indigenous rights in order to secure Ngarrindjeri lifeways. …

▼ This thesis presents the concept of the archaeological park and analyzes the historical, cultural, economical and tourism context of its operation. Also, a proposal is being made for the creation of an archaeological park in the archaeological geographic location of Kymissala, as well as a related empirical survey on cultural tourism and the recognition of the position of Kymissala on the island of Rhodes. Relatively new term and trend in archeology and museology, the concept of archaeological park is defined today by international conventions and an ongoing theoretical documentation of the context in which the term finds its application. The theoretical documentation of the archaeological park, in any environment, land or sea, also highlights the required balancing of the archaeological work with the work of preserving the cultural heritage. The emphasis in this thesis is on issues related to cultural tourism and ecotourism, as the formation and operation of an archaeological park becomes a focus of concentration of human activity in a particular physical space. Tourism development, as shown by empirical research, is closely linked to the quality of the environment and natural resources. The interconnection of tourism and the environment produces both positive and negative effects on the elements of the natural environment. As the term relates to issues related to the economy of cultural heritage, the possibilities of expressing cultural value with individual utility functions and terms of willingness to pay are explored. The value of cultural heritage can be interpreted as cultural capital, which opens up potentially fruitful ways to bring social decisions in this area. The archaeological park is a modern product of cultural tourism, run by a similar organization. Its two main aims are to present the life of the past and the importance of cultural heritage in today's society. The economic assessment of cultural heritage is seen as a necessary stage in achieving the sustainable use of cultural resources. Issues arising from the use of cultural goods are directly related to sustainable practices that are adapted to appropriate management models, such as what is proposed in the case of the study of the archaeological site of Kymissala, adapted to Greek reality. The empirical research conducted on the recognition of the region and the concept of cultural tourism strengthens both the theoretical and the practical framework for the realization of an archaeological park that has a positive impact on the sustainable tourism context of Rhodes.

The tourism while phenomenon of the present time is understood in this reflection as an activity of global character whose process elapses in systemic way. It is defended that its development should guide the preservation and conservation of the natural space, the socioeconomic development and the guarantee of the cultural diversity, thus demanding detailed attention to its planning. By this means, one of the ways of working the tourism in order to minimize its impacts is by means of sustainable practices developed by institutions of the third sector, spread out in the alternate tourism, central subject of the present dissertation. This study contextualizes the process of formation and development of the third sector in Brazil and analyses, in general form, the performance of these institutions in the context of the alternate tourism. It still interrelates the tourist phenomenon with the first, second and third sector in a systemic view; and, at last, analyses the performance of the third sector within the methodological referencial of the SISTUR.
The tourism is growing up in last decades and the alternative tourism with its mainly representatives (ecotourism, geotourism, rural tourism and the adventure tourism) is which has more highlights actually. Based on this concepts, the geotourism is the more recently, which was created to valorize the non-biotic aspects of the landscape, making a join with contemplation with scientific aspects of the visitation. So, the geoconcervation can be done. In the Triângulo Mineiro it is possible to find rare and good one examples of the geologic patrimony, as the water falls in Indianópolis District. This region is recognized by the variety and by the beauty scenes of its water falls, so the general objective of this research was to identify the potential of this place for the practice of the geotourism. ▼ Lietuvoje kaimo turizmas yra viena iš
perspektyviausių alternatyvių veiklų, kurianti darbo vietas kaimo
vietovėse ir teikianti papildomas pajamas. Alternatyvios ir žemės
ūkio veiklos derinimas padeda siekti pagrindinio tikslo – gerinti
Kaimo
turizmas turi didelį plėtros potencialą, nes auga poreikis
poilsiauti kaimo turizmo sodybose, ir didėja kaimo gyventojų,
ketinančių imtis šio ne žemės ūkio verslo, dalis. Darbo tikslas –
ištirti kaimo turizmo veiklą Lietuvos kaime, išanalizuoti jos
perspektyvas. Atliekant mokslinį tyrimą buvo išnagrinėti
straipsniai, įstatymai bei kiti teisės aktai. Naudotasi
internetiniais puslapiais ir periodiniais leidiniais. Sukaupta
medžiaga buvo nagrinėta naudojant anketinės ir tiesioginės
apklausos, loginės analizės, literatūros šaltinių analizės,
aprašomąjį ir statistinį metodus. Tyrimais nustatyta, kad per
pastaruosius septynerius metus (nuo 2000 iki 2007 m.) kaimo turizmo
sodybų skaičius padidėjo net keturis kartus. Daugiausia kaimo
turizmo sodybų yra Ignalinos, Zarasų, Trakų, Klaipėdos rajonų
savivaldybėse. Nors kaimo turizmas pastaraisiais metais tapo vienu
iš populiariausių ne žemės ūkio verslų kaime, šių paslaugų pasiūla,
kokybė ir įvairovė nėra pakankama.
Country tourism is one of the perspective
alternative agriculture activities which creates new workplaces and
give additional income. If we will match alternative and
agriculture activities, we will be able to reach the main purpose –
improve an employment, raise the standard quality of life, reduce
dependence from not effective agriculture activities. The country
tourism has a big potential of developmental. Main goal of this job
is to analyze country tourism activity in Lithuania village and
perspective of countryside tourism development. It was used
analysis of memoirs, statistical grouping, logical analysis,
descriptive and questionnaire methods. To determine relationships
between two properties was used correlation analysis. From results
we saw that during seven years (from 2000 to 2007) number of
countryside farmsteads increase even four times. There was
determining that the biggest amount countryside tourism farmsteads
are in Ignalinos, Zarasų, Trakų, Klaipėdos regions. It was
determined that the biggest influence to distribution of
countryside farmsteads was water.

▼ This thesis undertakes an exploration of the nature of alternative food projects in
Niagara. A review of various theoretical approaches to the study of food and agriculture,
suggests that actor-network theory offers the most useful lens through which to
understand these projects. In particular, actor-network theory facilitates non-dualistic
theorisations of power and scale and a commitment to the inclusion of non-humans in the
'social' sciences. The research is based on 19 in-depth interviews with actors involved in
various urban and rural projects including community supported agriculture, community
gardens, chefs using local seasonal food, a winery that grows organically, the good food
box, a value-added small business, and organic producers.
The analysis consists of four themes. The first analytical section pays special
attention to the prominence of agri-tourism in Niagara, and examines the ways in which
the projects in the sample interact with agri-tourist networks. In the second section the
discussion focuses on the discourses and practices of resistance among Niagara
alternative food actors. The participants' interviews suggest there are more discourses of
resistance toward agri-tourist than toward dominant food networks. The third section
questions commodity chain theorisations of alternative food projects. In particular, this
section shows how the inclusion of non-human actors in an analysis confounds
conceptualisations of 'short' and 'local' chains. The final analytical section assesses
relations of power in Niagara alternative food projects.
Three important conclusions arise from this research. First, Niagara alternative
food projects cannot be conceptualised as operating at the 'local' scale. Broadening the scope of analysis to include non-human actors, it becomes apparent that these projects
actually draw on a variety of extra-local actors. They are at once local and global.
Second, the projects in this sample are simultaneously part of alternative, dominant and
agri-tourist networks. While Niagara alternative food projects do perform many of the
roles characteristic of alternative food systems, they are also involved in practices of
development, business, and class distinction. Thus, alternative food networks should not
be understood as separate from and in direct opposition to dominant food networks.
Despite the second conclusion, this research determines that Niagara alternative food
projects have made significant strides in the reworking of power. The projects
represented in this thesis do engage in resistant practices and are associated with
increased levels ofjustice.

▼ This study develops and tests a theoretical model drawing on social psychological and
resource-mobilization perspectives of social movement theory to explain changes in social movement participation and support for activism among Earthwatch Expedition volunteers. The social psychological perspective of social movements recognizes the role of self-efficacy and consciousness-raising for the participation in and success of social movement organizations. The resource mobilization perspective of social movements stresses rationality and the importance of funding and networks for the success of social movement organizations. Utilizing these two theoretical perspectives as my foundation, I hypothesize that participation in an Earthwatch Expedition increases volunteers' participation in social movement organizations in ways such as making monetary donations, voting with the organization's platform in mind, or attending rallies and marches. I also hypothesize that volunteers will increase their support for others who participate in these same types of activities. Earthwatch Expeditions are a form of
alternative tourism in which volunteers participate in any of 126 different types of 10-14 day research-oriented expeditions that may include evaluating the health of a coral reef, studying maternal health among west African women, assessing the killer whale population off the coast of Puget Sound, or recording oral history in Dominica.
I conducted pre- and post-trip surveys in June and July of 1998, resulting in 363 completed surveys. I analyzed data using multiple regression to discover relationships between pre-trip and post-trip measures of social movement participation, activism support, networks, self-efficacy, and consciousness-raising. In other words, I explored ways in which an
alternative tourism experience like Earthwatch can change a person's ideas about their own social movement participation, the social movement activities of others, their perceived ability to overcome obstacles in order to implement social change, and their awareness of social issues. Results suggest that participation in an Earthwatch Expedition has a positive effect on volunteers' social movement participation, their awareness of social issues, their networks, and their ability to overcome obstacles, but little effect on activism support.

▼ The interrelationship between tourism and the environment resulted in the close connection of the rapid growth presented by tourism in recent decades with the degradation of the natural environment. For this reason, a new way of organizing and providing tourism services has been searched, which will put less pressure on natural resources and will have a mild growth orientation. Alternative forms of tourism, as opposed to mass tourism, are based on the existence of a special incentive for holidays, having special importance in preserving the natural and cultural environment and establishing relationships between locals and tourists.Ecotourism is an alternative form of tourism which is considered to be more consistent with the principles of sustainable development, when organized properly, having the smallest possible interventions in the environment, highlighting the characteristics of the place, strengthening local communities the prosperity of which is the target. For this reason, its development is closely linked to the consent and participation of local people at all stages of the project. In this framework, the present thesis attempts through primary and secondary research, to present the optimal application of marketing tools in ecotourism, which does not undermine the quality of the environment and the need for protection, but rather to ensure the maximization of it’s value in order to bring economic benefits to the local community, but also to offer an integrated experience to ecotourists who visit the destination. For this purpose, the area of Amari Municipality has been studied, which is located southeast of Rethymno Crete and has a rich natural and cultural environment, without however having been touristically developed so far. Specifically, the thesis focused in the study of the regions offered resources, while recording the views of local residents and travelers (using questionnaires). At the same time, interviews with the regions stakeholders, reflected their intentions about the ecotourism development. Based on the survey results, the thesis proceeded whith the development of a concrete methodology for applying the principles of ecotourism in a destination, proposing the use of appropriate marketing tools in order to create demand for ecotourism services and products, ensuring it’s sustainability in the future.

▼ As visitation to the national parks across the United States continues to increase, more and more park service units are exploring the possibility of implementing alternative forms of transportation to help mitigate some of the negative side effects associated with vehicle-related congestion issues. Although research efforts have examined the role of alternative transportation systems (ATS) in helping to improve the visitor experience in the national parks, fewer research efforts have focused on the impacts of these transportation systems on the affiliated gateway community, particularly with respect to the perceived impacts an ATS may have on quality of life in gateway communities.
Using West Yellowstone as a case study, this research aimed to address the gap in understanding residents’ current perceptions of the community’s quality of life (QOL), but more precisely, understanding how a hypothetically proposed form of tourism development (a voluntary shuttle system) could impact perceptions of QOL. Results show that characteristics of West Yellowstone’s community that contribute to a high QOL are environmental factors like clean air, clean water, and opportunities for outdoor recreation. Conversely, residents expressed concerns over the lack of affordable housing within their community.
When assessing the perceived impact a shuttle system would have on their QOL, residents felt that it would enhance several characteristics of their community that were already contributing to a high QOL while exacerbating fewer, yet highly important issues that were detracting from it. Overall, residents displayed tepid support for the concept of a shuttle system that would originate within their community. Rather, residents wished to focus on issues that were currently detracting from their QOL, such as the lack of affordable housing in their community. It is recommended that the idea of a shuttle system that originates within the town of West Yellowstone be pursued with caution until more pressing social and economic issues are handled first, if a shuttle system is to be pursued at all.

▼ The Everest region or Solu Khumbu is one of the most celebrated areas of the world. It is here that the highest mountain in the world, Mount Everest, or as the Nepalese call her, Sagarmatha "Mother of Universe" is situated. The high mountains and valleys of the Solu Khumbu is not only the home of Mt Everest but also that of a hardy ethnic group called “Sherpa" who migrated to the area from Eastern Tibet in the early 16th century.
This remote part of the world holds some of the most awe inspiring peaks to be found anywhere, framing a backdrop to the fascinating old Bhuddist Monasteries and amiable Sherpa villages.
These people have not only adapted to this marginal environment overcoming its problems and poor soil, but have also established a rich cultural heritage.
Up until 1950, the forests of Khumbu region had served as a multi-purpose resource for the Sherpas; firewood, building materials, leaf litter for compost and grazing animals.
The influx of tourism since the fifties increased demand for this resource. Large areas of forest have been burnt to ash by mountaineering and trekking groups who have used the wood for cooking, heating and hot showers, particularly on the route to Mt Everest and wherever there are lodges, tea shops and hotels.
This dissertation is concerned with the problems already outlined, along with proposals for introducing alternative energy sources. In an area where income is limited, the success of alternative energy sources will depend largely on the cost to the local inhabitants.
