A dinâmica de praia constitui conhecimento elementar em obras de engenharia e na compreensão da evolução costeira ao longo do Quaternário recente. Buscou-se avaliar a variação temporal de curto período da morfologia e do volume de sedimento em um segmento na porção sul da praia da Ilha Comprida, litoral sul de São Paulo. Os resultados permitiram algumas interpretações, tanto em escala diária, como sazonal. As morfologias e os volumes do trecho estudado apresentaram maior similaridade entre as campanhas de maio de 2005 e janeiro de 2006, com estágio morfodinâmico de praia dissipativa, e entre agosto e novembro de 2005, com estágio de praia intermediária do tipo banco e calha. As ondas de sul com alturas de até 1 m e período médio entre 7 e 8 s atuaram no processo de engordamento da praia emersa, enquanto que as ondas desta mesma direção com alturas a partir de 1,5 m e período médio entre 8 e 10 s exerceram papel erosivo. De forma inversa, as ondas de leste com até 1 m de altura e período médio entre 6 e 8 s exerceram papel erosivo e com até 1,5 m e período médio entre 6 e 7 s, papel deposicional.

The knowledge of beach dynamics is fundamental in any coastal engineering projects as well as in the coastal evolution comprehension during the Late Quaternary. The aim of this study is to evaluate the short-term variations in morphology and sediment volume in a beach segment located in the southern portion of the Ilha Comprida, southern coast of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The results allowed us to get important conclusions on daily and seasonal variations in beach morphology and behaviour. The morphology and volume data show similarity between may/2005 and jan/2006, with dissipative morphodynamic state characteristics, as well as between aug/2005 and nov/2005, characterized by an intermediate morphodynamic state. Southerly waves reaching 1m high and mean period between 7 and 8 s acts on the emerged part of the segment in a depositional way as well as southerly waves higher than 1,5 m and period between 8 and 10 s cause erosion in the same part of the beach profile. Easterly waves act in an opposite way, with lower heights causing erosion and higher causing deposition.

▼ As a result of increased economic development in Colombia, the pressure on the natural system has increased. The export of natural resources through international ports at both the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea causes conflicts between infrastructure and the dynamic behaviour of the coastal system. This Master Thesis focusses on the bay between Barranquilla and Santa Marta, along the Caribbean Sea. The case study combines structural erosion with an internationally recognized ecological zone and a vulnerable coastal highway (RN90) which connects the port of Barranquilla to the hinterland. The complex problem requires an integral approach, which aims at providing a most promising, long term solution to mitigate the adverse effects of coastal erosion. Relevant stakeholders were identified by means of a stakeholder analysis. No stakeholder was found who is responsible for coastal zone management in Colombia. The lack of ownership of the problem led to a late identification of the problem and resulted in the necessity to construct an emergency revetment along the RN90 at KM19. The processes driving the coastal erosion are: The natural relocation of the Rio Magdalena, the decreased supply of sediment from the Rio Magdalena and the strong gradient in alongshore sediment transport along the bay. The coastline development was predicted using different methods for several time scales. For short time scales (<5 years) historic coastline positions were analysed using satellite images. On intermediate time scales (5 -50 years) the process-based coastline model UNIBEST was used. The equilibrium bay position was estimated using MEPBAY, which is based on the Parabolic Bay Shape Method. Continuous, structural (long-term) erosion should be anticipated in the middle sections of the bay, since a timescale in the order of a thousand years is estimated before the bay reaches an equilibrium position. Using the predicted coastline development, two critical locations along the RN90 were identified; at KM19 immediate action is required and at KM28 action should be taken within the next 15 years. Six alternatives were defined to mitigate the adverse effects of erosion at the critical locations. The measures were implemented in UNIBEST to predict the coastline development. The impact of the alternatives was evaluated using a Multi Criteria Analysis (MCA), with the criteria defined as the stakeholder requirements resulting from the stakeholder analysis. Hard coastal protection works, such as the “Revetment”, “Breakwater” and “Groin Field”, can provide local protection for critical locations by shifting the erosion away from the critical locations to the downstream area. However they are expected to become very costly over time as the static constructions require extensive maintenance and scour protection in the highly dynamic coast zone. The alternative “Nourishment” was best appreciated in the qualitative scoring, however the benefits of a nourishment are not appreciated enough to account for the relatively high costs. ▼ Les ones de sorra a la línia de costa són ondulacions de la línia de costa amb una escala espacial de kilòmetres i una escala temporal d’anys a dècades. Ocorren a moltes costes, migren en la direcció del transport litoral i introdueixen una variabilitat a la línia de costa que pot ser major que la seva tendència a llarg termini. L’objectiu d’aquesta tesi és estudiar amb més profunditat la formació i la dinàmica de les ones de sorra i, més concretament, explorar el rol de l’anomenada inestabilitat d’angle gran. Estudis previs van demostrar que la línia de costa pot ser inestable en cas d’onades obliqües que incideixen amb un angle gran. Aquesta inestabilitat d’angle gran es produeix degut a la retroalimentació entre els canvis a la línia de costa (i els que conseqüentment ocorren a la batimetria) i els canvis al camp d’onades. La propagació de les onades sobre la batimetria pertorbada crea gradients del transport de sediment longitudinal que causen el creixement i la migració de les ones de sorra. En aquesta tesi s’ha millorat un model morfodinàmic quasi 2D i no lineal per usar-lo per explorar la inestabilitat d’angle gran i predir la formació i evolució de les ones de sorra. El model assumeix que la dinàmica a gran escala i llarg termini està dominada pel transport de sediment longitudinal produït per les onades de manera que la morfodinàmica de la zona de rompents no es detalla. S’han superat algunes de les limitacions dels estudis anteriors de modelat de la inestabilitat d’angle gran. El camp d’onades es calcula amb un mòdul senzill de propagació sobre la batimetria canviant i el transport longitudinal s’estima usant una fórmula empírica. La dinàmica transversal es parametritza per descriure pertorbacions de la línia de costa amb una extensió transversal finita i dinàmica. S’han refinat les condicions sota les quals la inestabilitat d’angle gran produeix la formació d’ones de sorra. Les simulacions amb condicions constants d’onades i pertorbacions inicials aleatòries mostren que la línia de costa esdevé inestable quan l’angle d’incidència a la profunditat de tancament és major que un angle de 42 graus i les ones de sorra es desenvolupen a l’uníson. La dinàmica transversal té un rol essencial al determinar l’extensió transversal de les pertorbacions. Usant els valors per defecte dels paràmetres del model, les ones de sorra tenen espaiats d’entre 2 i 5 km i temps de creixement d’entre 5 i 10 anys, i migren en la direcció del transport a uns 0.5 km/any. Les simulacions també mostren que una pertorbació inicial localitzada desencadena la formació d’un tren d’ones de sorra. Com més obliqües i grans són les onades i com menor és el seu període major és la inestabilitat. Un clima d’onatge més realista, alternant onades d’angle d’incidència gran i petit, redueix el potencial de la inestabilitat d’angle gran.
