▼ I start from the principle that composition is a historical lineage of techniques that have traditionally been applied to music but need not be. To illustrate this, I apply composition principles to the writing of this PhD thesis. In describing this process, I draw parallels between the music work I have composed during 2013-2017 and the process of thesis writing. Along the way, I show how quantization is not only central to my composition practice but fundamental to the act of composing; I rethink the basic epistemological principles of PhD research, using John Cage's ideology of chance and Arthur Koestler's idea of bisociation; I develop a new set of categories for classifying artworks that use combinatorics, under the umbrella neologism 'completism'; expand upon James Tenney's ideas to create a new typology of musical form based on completist principles; and finish by composing the bibliography, font, page-layout, semantics, word choice, and syntax of the Conclusion of this thesis.

▼ This text is a commentary on the nature of my principle artistic preoccupations over a period of research-creation spanning 2011 and 2013. The works discussed cover, each in their own way, various approaches to sound composition linked to physical objects. In effect, the object proves to be a fundamental element at the heart of discourse, which, though anchored in sound, is often multi-disciplinary. The object here is thus taken apart in its affective, conceptual, performative, visual, as well as sonic properties.
The first part of this text illustrates the nature of the relationship between the physical object and the works submitted for this doctoral thesis. It focuses on the journey of the works: from their genesis in the artist’s collections of objects to their life on stage where the objects are used as visual elements in a performative context.
The second part is dedicated to the conceptual and aesthetic content of the works, from which flow the principal elements of their discourse. Here, the relationships between the work, the concept and the sonic material are established, which together make up their aesthetic.

▼ Both minimal(ism) and postmodern(ism/ity) are terms that occupy a peculiar space in contemporary discourse: in academic circles their characterisation is contested and debated in everyday life they have become so ubiquitous that everyone associates them with something, but not necessarily with any degree of consensus. Both become widely recognised terms during the latter half of the twentieth century: decades characterised by unprecedented globalisation of culture and communication. This thesis seeks to explore the emergence of these terms, and the events they sought to describe, but it does not attempt to impose a 'correct' definition on either term. Instead, the thesis investigates the discourse that surrounds each concept, assembling a network of ideas that characterise those terms. I will demonstrate that each label acts as a signpost to a flexible collection of theories and characteristics, and argue that minimalism can be seen as a significant cultural response to an emerging postmodernity. The structure of this thesis has been informed by the philosophy of Deleuze and Guattari, particularly their writings on rhizomatic thought. Their thinking is not the subject of this research, but is the inspiration for a particular attitude to ideas that has been used as a structuring device for the text: that is, a structure that hopes to demonstrate the interconnectedness of contemporary experience. The image of the kaleidoscope is used as a metaphor for this rhizomatic approach. While the physical object represents the 'totality that many regard postmodernity to be, the experience of viewing a kaleidoscope the constantly shifting parts and the resultant patterns that we recognise is imagined as an illustration of the way that postmodernity and minimalism can be understood. Three parts magnify these terms in increasing detail. The first explores postmodern discourse and its relationship to culture. The second examines the development of, and critical response to, minimalism. The third takes a single composer, Louis Andriessen, and attempts to show how the postmodern condition frames his creativity, and his particular response to minimalism. All of these parts contain connections within and between, each part. While these connections will often be alluded to, I have tried to avoid solidifying these relationships in a way that might appear too 'linear' so as to invite the reader to participate in the interpretive process, and to retain the openness so characteristic of Deleuzian thought.

▼ Aluminium castings with a large grain structure have poor mechanical properties which are primarily due to casting defects as opposed to fine grain structure. The grain refinement practice using chemical addition is well established for wrought alloys, however in the case of casting alloys, the practice of adding grain refiners and the impact on castability is not well established. The addition of well known Al-5Ti-B grain refiner to casting alloys with silicon (Si) content above 3 wt.% is not effective. This is believed to be due to the chemical reaction between Ti and Si. The current research aim is to find an alternative, but effective, chemical phase which can refine Al-Si alloy grains. Based on a crystallographic database search and intermetallic phases found in Aluminium–Niobium-Boron, there exists several iso-structural phases similar to those of Al3Ti and TiB2. We have selected a phase which exhibits chemical phase stability with Si (below 900 °C) and developed a potential novel grain refiner Nb-B for Al-Si cast alloys. Various Al-Si binary alloys and a commercial sourced LM6 (Al-10Si-Mg) cast alloys were cast after novel grain refiner addition to the melt. It is the first time that such fine grain structures were achieved for Al-Si alloys when Si >4wt.%. It is believed that Nb-B grain refiner enhances the heterogeneous nuclei in the melt. The effectiveness of this grain refiner under various cooling rate conditions is investigated to simulate various practical casting conditions. Due to increased heterogeneous nuclei density, a fine grain structure is also obtained at low cooling rates and the grain size is less sensitive to the cooling rate. The processing of high Si containing alloys for complex shaped castings with reduced defects, fine grain structure and improved mechanical properties are now possible.

▼ Tuberculosis (TB) faces difficult challenges for its treatment and control. Both the diagnosis of TB and Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis) drug susceptibility testing take weeks and clinicians often do not know if the patient is taking an appropriate set of drugs until complications or even death occur. Consequently, early determination of a successful drug therapy response in individuals infected with M. tuberculosis is urgently needed. Since the M. tuberculosis cell wall is comprised of a diverse repertoire of lipids, we examined the possible role of these lipids as antigens for serologic response during M. tuberculosis infection. This dissertation is focused on the examination of lipid-antibody response as a potential biomarker used to monitor treatment response in M. tuberculosis infected hosts. Briefly, Chapter 1 describes the current pitfalls of monitoring tuberculosis treatment with current methods, including acid-fast bacilli (AFB) smear and culture conversion. Chapter 1 also covers the definition of biomarkers and the rationale to use M. tuberculosis cell wall lipids to develop an anti-lipid-antibody based test. Evidence from a similar biomarker-based test for syphilis is presented. The chapter also discusses the biological basis which guided the lipid-antibody biomarker search and discovery. Chapter 2 describes the use of a serum bank from patients with pulmonary TB provided by the World Health Organization-Tropical Diseases Research consortium (WHO-TDR) to identify M. tuberculosis lipid candidates as targets of antibody response. These samples were used to look for an antibody response to multiple mycobacterial lipids resolved by thin-layer chromatography immunoblot (TLC-I). This approach allowed us to identify M. tuberculosis cardiolipin by mass spectrometry and we determined that the IgM antibody response to cardiolipin can be used as a biomarker of infection. In Chapter 3, we investigate the biological evidence behind the production of anti-phospholipid IgM antibody during TB infection and anti-TB treatment. For this purpose, we used the Cornell mouse model of infection to monitor the change in IgM antibody response against four phospholipids including cardiolipin (CL), phosphatidyl choline (PTC), phosphatidyl ethanolamine (PE) and phosphatidyl inositol (PI) over the course of M. tuberculosis infection and treatment. We separated BALB/c mice into three groups including acute infection (AI), chronic infection (CI), and healthy control (HC). Both AI and CI groups were infected via the aerosol route with M. tuberculosis strain H37Rv at day 0. The AI group was treated from 4 to 12 weeks post-infection, while the CI group was treated from 20 to 28 weeks post-infection. We also measured the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, IL-5 and MCP-1. We observed that in treated AI mice, anti-phospholipid IgM antibody levels decreased compared to those of healthy mice at all time points. Anti-PTC IgM antibodies remained significantly higher in CI mice than in AI mice at all time points…

▼ This thesis examines the reinvention of jihād ideology in twelfth‑century al‑Shā
m. In modern scholarship there is a tendency to speak of a revival of jihād in the twelfth century, but discussion of this revival has been dominated by study of the practice of jihād rather than of the ideology of jihād. This thesis addresses this imbalance by studying two twelfth‑century Damascene works: the Kitā
b al‑jihād (Book of Jihād) of ʿAlī
b. Ṭāhir al‑Sulamī (d. 500/1106), and the al‑Arbaʿūn ḥadīthan fī al‑ḥathth ʿala al‑jihād (Forty Hadiths for Inciting Jihād) of Abū al‑Qāsim Ibn ʿAsākir (d. 571/1176). Through discussion of these texts, this thesis sheds light on twelfth‑century perceptions of jihād by asking what their authors meant when they referred to jihād, and how their perceptions of jihād related to the broader Islamic discourse on jihād. A holistic approach is taken to these works; they are discussed not only in the context of the 'master narrative' of jihād, wherein juristic sources have been privileged over other non‑legal genres and corpora, but also in the context of the Sufi discourse of jihād al‑nafs, and the earliest traditions on jihād which thrived from the eighth century onwards on the Muslim‑Byzantine frontier. This thesis argues that both al‑Sulamī and Ibn ʿAsākir integrated elements from these different traditions of jihād in order to create models of jihād suited to their own political contexts, and that it is only in the context of a more nuanced appreciation of jihād ideology that their attempts can be properly understood. At the same time, this thesis argues against the model of the 'counter‑crusade', which holds that the revival of jihād began in earnest only in the middle of the twelfth century, by stressing that there was no delay between the arrival of the Franks and attempts to modify jihād ideology.

▼ The Mudawwana is a work which is traditionally credited to Saḥnūn, a legal jurist from Kairouan, North Africa in the 2nd-3rd/8th-9th century. It is one of the major legal texts at the foundation of the Mālikī madhhab named after Mālik
b. Anas. The text is a large compendium of hypothetical scenarios requiring resolution. The style of the text is masāʾil, i.e. question-and-answer, between a disciple and his teacher. This research examines ancient manuscripts, commentaries and modern editions of the Mudawwana for a comparative analysis in attempting to understand the way in which the text was formed. The text will be examined in the areas of structure, content and presentation. The roles and influences of those responsible for the development of the text will be examined using definitions set out by Sebastian Günther. Discrepancies and variances amongst the manuscripts and modern editions, along with insights gleaned from the commentaries will yield a formative process in the development of the text over a period of centuries. It will be shown that although much of the content of the text was likely set by the creator of the text, various influences through the centuries by personalities and individuals fulfilling certain roles have impacted the structure and presentation of the text. The various roles in the creation of the text will be examined including author, writer, scribe, student, transmitter and editor. The influences of these various roles have developed the text further, therefore distancing it from the intentions of the creator of the original text. Structural changes were most prominent in the medieval period with kitābs within the text being bound in kurrāsas, one or more to a group. In the modern period, these nearly one hundred kitābs were then bound in multi-volume hardcover sets providing a very new presentation form for the text. Additionally, a new name was given with the publication of the first modern edition in 1323/1905,
al-Mudawwana
al-kubrā. The textual changes will be examined in light of these roles in order to better understand how the text has been modified and formed over the centuries. Results will demonstrate that the text of the Mudawwana has undergone three primary periods of development: formative, classical and renaissance. The roles and personalities have impacted its development in content, structure and presentation, with the latter two having been more significantly affected during its classical and renaissance stages.

▼ Abstract The present study is concerned with the
mechanism of growth of porous anodic films formed on high purity
aluminium and sputtering deposited aluminium over a wide range of
current density between 5 to 50 mA/cm2 for times up to 5400 s in
24.5 wt % sulphuric acid and at temperatures of either 0 or 20 0C.
The resultant films were examined using scanning electron
microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM),
Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS), nuclear reaction
analysis (NRA), optical interferometery, microhardness and
nanoindentation. The RBS analysis enabled determination of the
composition of the porous films, which was expressed as
Al2O3.xAl2(SO4)3, with the sulphur species content increasing with
increase in current density and decrease in temperature. The
average expansion factor (expressing, the ratio of the film
thickness to the oxidized aluminium thickness) increased between 5
mA/cm2 and 50 mA/cm2 for films formed at 0 0C, extending from 1.58
to 1.88 and from 1.57 to 1.78 according to SEM and TEM
respectively. For films fabricated at 20 0C, the average expansion
factor increased from 1.45 to 1.66 and from 1.42 to 1.67 derived
from SEM and TEM respectively. The expansion factor increases as
the current density increases for both temperatures, and decreases
as electrolyte temperature for a given current density increases.
The increase of expansion factor is also associated with a rise in
the steady voltage during film growth. However, the film expansion
does not depend on the anodizing time. The increase in expansion
factor correlates with a small increase in the amount of sulphur in
the film, which increases with rise of current density. The surface
of the porous alumina revealed a network of furrows and ridges,
reflecting the pattern of the cellular textures on the topography
of the elecropolished aluminium. The retention of topography
indicates that the thinning of the film due to chemical dissolution
by the electrolyte is negligible, although softening of the film
toward the film surface increases with rise of electrolyte
temperature and anodizing time as determined by microhardness
measurements on film cross-sections. For films fabricated at 0 0C,
nodules appeared with a low population density on the film surfaces
formed at 20 mA/cm2 for 5400 s, and a locally high population
density, but non-uniform distribution, for films formed at 30 to 50
mA/cm2 for a wide range of anodizing times. NRA determined the
oxygen concentrations in the films, from which the efficiency of
the film grown was derived. The efficiency showed a correlation
with the expansion factor, with values increasing with rise of
current density and with decrease in the anodizing temperature,
ranging from 72 % to 87 % between 5 mA/cm2 and 50 mA/cm2, for an
electrolyte temperature of 0 0C, and between 66 % to 75 %, for the
same range of current density, for an electrolyte temperature of 20
0C. The change in the relative film thickness with a change of the
anodizing conditions might due to either a rise in the film…

This research deals with al-ŠâfiÝî's influence upon Abû Íayyân al-naÎwî 's doctrine, in his Great Commentaries of the Holy Quran entitled : Tafsîr al-BaÎr -al-MuÎîÔ. We understand his hermeneutic approach through an extensive analysis of his life and of his intellectual creation. We study Abû Íayyân's exegetical works : we show how far his analytic process and his conception of the Arabic language and of the Holy Quran are influenced by al-ŠâfiÝî and his juridic school of thought. We scrutinize the semantic, lexical and grammatical components of his approach, including polysemous, synonymous and opposite words. We analyse Abû Íayyân's conception and contribution in the fields of rhetoric, metonymy, grammatical semantics (Ýilm al- maÝânî) and in the science of ornemental speech (Ýilm al- badîÝ).

Until recently the Sub-Saharan manuscripts have been inaccessible and thus include many major works in numerous fields. This thesis deals with two such works in the qreq of lexicography and grammar, namly: Iḍā’at al-Uḍmūs wa Riyāḍat al-Nufūs min Isṭilāḥ Ṣāḥib al-Qāmūs d’Aḥmed b. ‘Abd al-‘Azīz b. al-Rashīd al-Sijlmāsi, al-Mālikī (1761), which is also a commentary on the methodology of the book al-Qāmūs al-Muḥīṭ; and al-Qāmūs al-Muḥīṭ ; et de : Shifā’ al-Ṣudūr fī Ḥalli alfāẓ al-Shudhūr de Muḥammad b. ‘Abd al-Mun‘im Schams al-Din al-Jawjarī al-Shāfi’ al-Miṣrī (1484) which is also a commentary, dealing with the famous book of grammar by Ibn Hishām: Shudhūr al-Dhahab.This treatment of these manuscripts involved the making a scientific edition to provide a ready to read text, with the provion of vocalization, punctuation, critical apparatus and typography with the purpose not giving an image of these manuscripts, but to transforming them into a book. This thesis has scrutinized the variations between three copies of the book: Iḍā'at al-Uḍmūs and two copies of the book Shifā’ al-Ṣudūr in order to restore the texts; it has mentioned the errors encounred, traced the sources and made comments to clarify some passages by referring to a varied and plentiful bibliography.

Scholars in the Arabic Grammatical Tradition have mainly been focusing their attention on the formative stage of the Arabic grammatical theory (2nd-4th/8th-10th centuries). This dissertation aims at broadening the scope and is intended to contribute to our knowledge of this discipline at the post-classical period and in the western periphery of the Islamic world. The starting point of research is represented by a 4th/10th century grammarian of Persian origin who settled in Damascus: ʾAbū al-Qāsim al-Zaǧǧāǧī. Nowadays he is one of the best-known Arabic grammarians, but that was not the case in the beginning. Indeed his fame grew steadily thanks to one of his treatises, the Kitāb al-Ǧumal fī al-naḥw. The presentation of al-Zaǧǧāǧī and of his book sets the frame for the study, whose main focus is to trace the history of this text through time and space. This enquiry leads to al-Andalus: whereas the Ǧumal seemed to be abandoned in the Islamic East, it was adopted by Andalusian scholars as one the main texts for grammatical studies. The analysis of its chains of transmission and the presentation of all of its commentaries show not only that this treatise was the main grammatical text in this periphery of the Islamic world, but even that it came to be a sort of mirror of Andalusian history and identity. The journey of this book starts at the 4th/10th century…

▼ The present study is concerned with the mechanism of growth of porous anodic films formed on high purity aluminium and sputtering deposited aluminium over a wide range of current density between 5 to 50 mA/cm2 for times up to 5400 s in 24.5 wt % sulphuric acid and at temperatures of either 0 or 20 0C. The resultant films were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS), nuclear reaction analysis (NRA), optical interferometery, microhardness and nanoindentation. The RBS analysis enabled determination of the composition of the porous films, which was expressed as Al2O3.xAl2(SO4)3, with the sulphur species content increasing with increase in current density and decrease in temperature. The average expansion factor (expressing, the ratio of the film thickness to the oxidized aluminium thickness) increased between 5 mA/cm2 and 50 mA/cm2 for films formed at 0 0C, extending from 1.58 to 1.88 and from 1.57 to 1.78 according to SEM and TEM respectively. For films fabricated at 20 0C, the average expansion factor increased from 1.45 to 1.66 and from 1.42 to 1.67 derived from SEM and TEM respectively. The expansion factor increases as the current density increases for both temperatures, and decreases as electrolyte temperature for a given current density increases. The increase of expansion factor is also associated with a rise in the steady voltage during film growth. However, the film expansion does not depend on the anodizing time. The increase in expansion factor correlates with a small increase in the amount of sulphur in the film, which increases with rise of current density. The surface of the porous alumina revealed a network of furrows and ridges, reflecting the pattern of the cellular textures on the topography of the elecropolished aluminium. The retention of topography indicates that the thinning of the film due to chemical dissolution by the electrolyte is negligible, although softening of the film toward the film surface increases with rise of electrolyte temperature and anodizing time as determined by microhardness measurements on film cross-sections. For films fabricated at 0 0C, nodules appeared with a low population density on the film surfaces formed at 20 mA/cm2 for 5400 s, and a locally high population density, but non-uniform distribution, for films formed at 30 to 50 mA/cm2 for a wide range of anodizing times. NRA determined the oxygen concentrations in the films, from which the efficiency of the film grown was derived. The efficiency showed a correlation with the expansion factor, with values increasing with rise of current density and with decrease in the anodizing temperature, ranging from 72 % to 87 % between 5 mA/cm2 and 50 mA/cm2, for an electrolyte temperature of 0 0C, and between 66 % to 75 %, for the same range of current density, for an electrolyte temperature of 20 0C. The change in the relative film thickness with a change of the anodizing conditions might due to either a rise in the film porosity under…

▼ Gut-associated lymphoid tissues such as Peyer’s patches (PP) are inductive sites for immune response in the intestine. Unlike other peripheral lymphoid tissues, gut-associated lymphoid tissues lack afferent lymphatics and can directly sample mucosal antigens by specialized epithelial cells in the follicular associated epithelia (FAE), known as M cells. M cells derive from Lgr5+ intestinal stem cells in intestinal crypts, where the daughter cells of Lgr5+ cells differentiate into M cells after stimulation from the cytokine receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL). RANKL is produced by stromal cells within the sub-epithelial dome (SED) residing below the FAE. The transcytosis of antigens across the FAE by M cells is an important initial step in the induction of efficient mucosal immune responses against certain pathogenic bacteria as well as the commensal bacterial flora. However some pathogens, for example orally-acquired prions, may also exploit M cells to infect the host. M cells have been implicated in the uptake of orally acquired prions from the gut lumen. After oral exposure, the accumulation of prions in PP is important for their efficient spread to the nervous system. Previous studies have also shown that pathogen-induced inflammation increases M cell density and this effect can be mimicked by exogenous administration of RANKL. This has led to the hypothesis tested in this thesis that inflammation-related enhancement of M cell differentiation aids the delivery of prions into the lamina propria of villi. The administration of RANKL resulted in increased M cell density in the gut epithelium of mice. Consequently, RANKL treatment enhanced the accumulation of orally-administered prions in PP, decreased disease incubation time and increased prion disease susceptibility. These data indicate the importance of M cells in prion disease pathogenesis and highlight the potential of M cells as vaccine targets against prion disease. The fate and terminal differentiation of distinct intestinal epithelial cell lineages from their uncommitted precursors is dependent on their intrinsic expression of one or more specific transcription factors during their development. Alongside inducing M cell differentiation, RANKL stimulation can also induce the nuclear translocation of the NF-κB transcription factor subunit c-Rel. A comparison of the genes encoding the individual NF-κB subunits c-Rel, Rel-A and Rel-B revealed that they were expressed at the mRNA level in the FAE and by M cells. A c-Rel-deficiency in mice did not influence the expression of RANKL or RANK in PP. The subsequent induction of M cell maturation in the FAE was also unaffected in, indicating that c-Rel is dispensable for the RANKL-mediated differentiation and functional maturation of M cells. The factors implicated in Lgr5+ intestinal stem cell proliferation and their differentiation into M cells are poorly understood. Some reports have indicated that crypt-associated macrophages may provide extrinsic factors that assist Lgr5+ intestinal stem cell…

The main objective is here to develop a new generation of ceramic materials used for plasma confinement in Hall-effect thrusters using the PDCs (polymer-derived ceramics) route. A state of the art of the different confinement materials and a review of the previous work done on this topic allowed to determine the key parameters of such materials and to move towards the use of preceramic polymers as precursors of the materials envisaged. After having detailed the various protocols used to chemically modify a commercial polymer with boron, to shape the compounds obtained and then to convert the polymers into ceramics bypyrolysis, Si-B-(C)-N dense ceramic pieces have been produced with various boron content. A complete study from the chemical structure of the polymers to the properties of the resulting ceramics allowed selecting the optimal formulation of the polymer as a ceramic precursor. c-BN/Si-B-(C)-N composites were then prepared by filler addition, then shaped and characterized before a scale-up to prepare engine-size ceramic rings. The last part consists of an opening on the use of the PDCs route for the realization of dense Si-Al-(C)-N pieces of controlled composition, with a study of the impact of aluminum on the polymers andceramics properties.

Limiting our environmental impact involves research and development of new materials and processes. Technical ceramics can have an essential place to meet the current technical challenges. Ceramic matrix composites allow the reinforcement of many types of structures, mainly for applications at high temperatures and especially in the aeronautical and aerospace fields. These composites mainly use silicon carbide fibers as reinforcing agent. However, the production of SiC fibers is dominated by companies from Japan leading to strategic and economic issue. Moreover, the thermomechanical properties of SiC fibers are reduced…

mayor valor quedaba afecto a impuestos.

Yūsuf al-Ṯaqafī is considered by Islamic medieval historiography as the archetypal man of tyrannical power. Having successfully dealt with many revolts, he posed a moral problem to Muslim historians, to the extent that he died of natural causes, without being punished by God. How then to account for his turbulent times, his actions, his distrust vis-à-vis religious symbols, massacres he committed? We are trying to demonstrate that by using satire and irony, historians and writers who have written about him have responded, each in its own way, this thorny issue by drawing a black portrait of him, touching on all aspects of the person. Building on the accomplishments of Paul Ricœur and especially Hayden White, we also show that Muslim historians intervened significantly in the composition of their works to guide their narratives according to their moral conception and “ideological” own, offering portraits various al-Ḥaǧǧāǧ. The result is skeptical (al-Ṭabarī), ironic (al-Balāḏurī) or satirical and very pro-‘alide (al-Mas‘ūdī) readings. The study of three non-historical texts broadens the vision and demonstrate if necessary proximity between history and adab in medieval times. At the same time, we believe we have found many examples refuting the thesis that a canonical history was written under the Caliphate Abbasid.

CTX-M enzymes, the world\'s most prevalent ß-lactamases disseminate very easily. Genetic recombination, plasmid transference and multiresistance could be responsible for the wide spread of blaCTM-X genes. This retrospective study aims to characterize blaCTX-M genes found in Klebsiella spp. The strains were isolated in hospital patients from January to June 2000 and consisted of 27 ESBL-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae and 8 ESBL-producing Klebsiella oxytoca. PCR and sequencing were used in the detection and identification of blaCTX-M genes and genetic elements associated with their mobilization. Determination of genetic localization and mobility of blaCTX-M genes was by plasmid analyses, hybridization and transfer assays. The minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of cephalosporins, cefamicins, aminoglycosides and quinolone antimicrobials evaluated the antibiotic susceptibility profile of transconjugants and strains in the study. The blaCTX-M genes were found in 13 strains (37%): blaCTX-M-9 in 4 K. oxytoca and blaCTX-M-2 in 9 K. pneumoniae. The insertion sequence ISEcp1 was associated with blaCTX-M-9 and…

▼ Our mucosal immune system responds to pathogens and commensals on mucosal surfaces by forming a tight barrier and producing immunoglobulin A (IgA). IgA production depends on the uptake of gut lumen particulates by specialized epithelial cells called microfold (M) cells and the subsequent B cell activation in the mucosal lymphoid tissue. B-1 and B-2 B cells are two main B cell subset responsible in generating immune response at the mucosal site. Although B-1B cells has been shown to contribute to T- cell independent immune response while B-2 B cell use mainly T-cell dependent pathway, studies have suggested that both of these subset contribute IgA production in the gut almost equally. However, contrary to B-2 B cells, the location where B-1 B cell activated by mucosal antigen has remained unclear. Additionally, tumor necrosis factor (TNF) receptor/ligand superfamily signaling has been shown to play a role in mucosal lymphoid tissue organogenesis and M cell uptake function such that lymphotoxin (LT)-α-/-, LT-β-/-, LT-βR-/- or CD137-/- mice have no Peyer's patches or a very low IgA titer. In-vitro treatment with TNFα is also known to decrease epithelial barrier function. Henceforth, this study will highlight the potential use of recombinant IgA in clearing the replicating dengue virus in the gut, the B-1 B cell contribution in mucosal immune response, and the role of a TNF superfamily receptor, CD137, in the intestinal epithelial cells. Peritoneal B-1 B cells generate antigen specific IgG and IgM when the mice immunized intraperitoneally or subcutaneously, but not intranasally, using polymeric vaccine. The last chapter of this study further characterizes the role of CD137 in intestinal epithelial cells by utilizing an in-vitro overexpression system, which could further reveal the biological relevance of TNFα in chronic intestinal inflammation. Our seminal findings describe the role of CD137 in increasing tight junction resistance and its association with actin filament termini. In sum, this study addresses how a receptor, CD137, known for its co-stimulatory function in immune cells activation can mediate the physical barrier created by intestinal epithelial cells, the humoral response of B-1 B cells in mucosal immunity and the use of recombinant IgA as therapy.

Ever since Yeats started writing plays in the 1890s, the Irish character seems to be struggling between two opposite pitfalls of memory: on the one hand an impossibility for him to forget, and the other hand an impossibility to retain memories. This memory crisis, which entails an identity crisis, leads to an increasing staging of mental disorders by the playwrights to represent, perhaps involuntarily, a destabilised contemporary society. W. B. Yeats (1865-1939) and J. M. Synge (1871-1909) use mental disorder not only as a theme, but also as a literary ploy as memories in their plays are relived and reconstructed in misleading and contradictory tales. This work focuses on the relationship between memory, mental disorder and Modernism in a long period (1892-1939) in order to underline the evolutions of the representation of dysfunctional memory in the texts. It successively examines the plays in the light of the three major memory disorders identified by psychiatrists at the time: amnesia, hypermnesia and paramnesia. This work relies on a parallel reading of the intuitive perception of memory by literature and the contemporary psychiatric theories, the underlying hypothesis being that some clinical notions of memory dysfunctions have been integrated to the theatrical corpus, which could be a feature of an Irish (early) Modernism.

▼ Biomedical Neuroscience
The HIV protein, Vpr, is a multifunctional accessory protein critical for efficient viral infection of target CD4+ T cells and macrophages. Vpr is incorporated into virus particles and functions to transport the preintegration complex into the nucleus where the process of viral integration into the host genome is completed. This action is particularly important in macrophages, which as a result of their terminal differentiation and non-proliferative status, would be otherwise more refractory to HIV infection. Vpr has several other critical functions including activation of HIV-1 LTR transcription, cell-cycle arrest due to DCAF-1 binding, and both direct and indirect contributions to T-cell dysfunction. The interactions of Vpr with molecular pathways in the context of macrophages, on the other hand, support accumulation of a persistent reservoir of HIV infection in cells of the myeloid lineage. The role of Vpr in the virus life cycle, as well as its effects on immune cells, appears to play an important role in the immune pathogenesis of AIDS and the development of HIV induced end-organ disease. In view of the pivotal functions of Vpr in virus infection, replication, and persistence of infection, this protein represents an attractive target for therapeutic intervention. Numerous studies have reported that Vpr alters NF-kappa B signaling in various cells, however, the findings have so far been largely conflicting with reports both stimulatory and inhibitory effects of Vpr. Our aim was to investigate the role of Vpr signaling in myeloid cells and address discrepancies that have been reported in the field. Our results show that Vpr expressed intracellularly is inhibitory to NF-kappa B, while extracelluar Vpr may have some stimulatory effects. Consistent with this notion, we report that Vpr has inhibitory effects that are specific to the TNF-alpha pathway, but not the LPS pathway, suggesting that multiple targets of Vpr may exist for NF-kappa B regulation. Further, we identify VprBP as one possible cellular component of Vpr's regulation of I-kappa B-alpha in response to TNF-alpha stimulation. We did not identify such a role for HSP27, which instead seems to inhibit Vpr functions. Finally, our findings suggest that NF-kappa B regulation by Vpr is further changed by the presence of other HIV-1 components within the cells, as U1 cells lacking Vpr were unexpectedly less responsive to TNF-alpha than those cells that had normal Vpr expression levels. This data suggests that Vpr may serve an important role in vivo by selectively inhibiting immune activation while stimulating NF-kappa B mediated viral production in HIV-1 infected T-cells and myeloid cells. M-CSF is a cytokine that promotes monocyte differentiation and survival. When over-expressed, M-CSF contributes to pathology in a wide variety of diseases including osteoporosis, obesity, certain human cancers, and in HIV-1 infection, particularly with respect to monocyte/macrophage infection and the development of HIV-1. In this study, our aim is to…

The growing evolution of Information and Communication Technologies requires capable citizens keeping path with this evolution in order to benefit of these technologies, minimizing eventual restrictions or constrictions that might be caused.
This continuous evolution in educational technologies applied within the educational field contributed towards new educational forms of learning. Some of this implemented forms of learning contributed towards virtual learning scenarios increasingly feasible and mature.
Nowadays, it is commonly accepted that student’s learning occurs not only at school. Most of the acquired knowledge by the student happens through ICT, more specifically through the Internet. E-Learning is an example of how those technologies are applied allowing…

▼ This study examines the philosophical question of how it is possible to appreciate music aesthetically as an expressive art form. First it examines a number of general theories that seek to make sense of expressiveness as a characteristic of music that can be considered relevant to our aesthetic appreciation of the latter. These include accounts that focus on resemblances between music and human behaviour or human feelings, on music's powers of emotional arousal, and on various ways in which music may be imaginatively construed by listeners. It argues that none of these are entirely satisfactory. Then it proposes an alternative account, focusing on what is involved when our appreciation of music as an expressive art is informed by our awareness of it as something that is expressively interpreted in performance. It is claimed that this offers the basis for a better understanding of at least some aspects of expressiveness in music and its relevance to aesthetic appreciation.

▼ This doctoral portfolio and commentary thesis constitute a practice-led research into 'immersive' musical experiences, both from the perspective of the spectator and the composer. Specific parallels are drawn between immersive experiences, the concept of 'mise-en-abyme' (placing copies of an image within the same image, or placing a story within a story) and how this concept can be developed as a process for creating musical materials. Interdisciplinary art forms, collaborative methods and the novel approaches to using multimedia tools are explored for their potential in creating conditions for engaged listening and composition techniques. After an introduction to the 'mise-en-abyme' concept in Chapter One, the main body of the commentary thesis is divided into three main sections (Chapters Two, Three and Four). The first part (Chapter Two) explores specific musical devices that draw on installation art forms to provoke heightened experience of musical works. The second part (Chapter Three) explores two major collaborative projects, investigating detailed working methods, the role of the composer-performer and the evolving role of authorship in modern music making. The third part (Chapter Four) explores new methods of composing with digital media, that draw on the 'mise-en-abyme' concept as a process for generating new materials and musical structures. This is accompanied by a portfolio of eleven original works for acoustic instruments and electroacoustic media. Scores, audio and video recordings, digital performance materials (Max patches and Ableton Live sessions) and an appendix of supplementary materials are included in print form and on an accompanying USB flash drive.
