▼ The Syrian civil war was a byproduct of peaceful calls for moderate living and political freedom turned into an on-going devastation leaving behind traces of death, destruction and millions of refugees. While the Syrian citizens remain to be the main victims of this war, the media has played a crucial role in framing this crisis. Thus, the choice of investigating the Russian intervention can be attributed to the unprecedented involvement of Moscow in the Arab region. The involvement of both the U.S-led coalition and Russia gave the Syrian civil war a global status prioritising it as a crisis unfolding a new chapter in the world’s political order. Additionally, the social and political formation of Syria where the “breakdown of state institutions and the deepening communal rift" has often bred waves of violence and instability in the entire region. The primary aim of this study is to examine and analyse the framing of the Russian intervention in Syria as covered by Russia Today (RT) and Al Jazeera (AJ). It investigates the framing of different combatants involved in the war given the intricate nature of the crisis in Syria and the involvement of multiple global and regional superpowers and different politically and ideologically driven factions. In addition, the study investigates the sources incorporated by the two aforementioned news outlets while broadly looking upon reasons for the different coverage of the war by examining the historic and contemporary geopolitical formation of the region. It lays out the process of research design and data collection in the timeframe between September 2015 and January 2016. Subsequently, a background account of the establishment of RT and AJ is provided as a means of understanding the internal and external dynamics that unquestionably contribute in its agenda-setting. The literature review looks at concepts such as objectivity, credibility, source selection in addition to the emergence of user-generated content. As a background reference, the study examines the US invasion of Iraq and the reintroduction of embedded journalism. Similarly, the study compares the media portrayal of Iraqi president Saddam Hussein and Syrian president Bashar Al Assad. The main findings of this study has shown that the introduction of user-generated content has played a notable role in this war as found by the examination of AJ which depended largely on the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights for its news stories. RT, on the other hand, opted for a traditional role by depending primarily on military sources.

▼ Nominal stems ending in t are very rare in Proto-Indo-European. Despite this fact Ancient Greek displays a series of nominal stems that end in t. Their presence in Ancient Greek suggests that the insertion of t in words of PIE origin must be a process which occurred in Greek itself. From a diachronic perspective these stems fall into two categories. The first is represented by words which display the t in their stems in all the historical records we have, both in epigraphical evidence-including Mycenaean-and in literary sources. For this category we cannot trace the moment and the place when this “older” t entered the paradigms. The second category, however, contains words that show an allomorphic variation between t-ful stems and t-less stems. Given the fact that Homer uses in the majority of cases the t-less stems one can see, in post-Homeric dialects, how the stems with this “intrusive” t coexist with the t-less stems and win eventually over. The main goal of the dissertation is to see how this allomorphic variation evolved through historical Greek. Its second purpose is to see what this allomorphic variation can tell us about the origin of the intrusive t. The perfect active participle shows up in historical Greek as a t-stem. Nevertheless, scanty evidence from Mycenaean suggested that in this dialect of Greek the participle may have been t-less. The work addresses this problem again and comes up with the hypothesis that the forms Mycenaean displays might be only adjectives derived from former t-less participles, but not t-less participles. Consequently, the t-ful participle may still be a creation of Common Greek. A last issue regards the –ti adverbs in Greek, which have been often considered to be former locatives of t-stems. The study shows that this hypothesis does not seem to be true and that they are more likely to be the result of an analogical process, which occurred in Greek and not in PIE. ▼ Läänemeremaadest on leitud palju kiviaegseid asulakohti, mille arheoloogiline leiumaterjal viitab rannasidusale elatusviisile, kuid mis asuvad tänapäeval merest kaugel. Käesolevas doktoritöös rekonstrueeriti meretaseme muutused, paleorannavööndid ja –maastikud kiviaegsete asulakohtade ümbruses Narva-Lauga klindilahes, Tallinna kesklinnas ja Ruhnu saarel, et välja selgitada nende asulakohtade paiknemine omaaegses maastikus. Selleks kasutati geoinfosüsteemipõhist lähenemist, milles korreleeriti ruumiliselt ja ajaliselt mitmed loodusteaduslikud ning arheoloogilised andmestikud. Paleogeograafiliste rekonstruktsioonide alusel leiti, et Narva-Lauga piirkonnas oli kiviaegne küttide-kalurite-korilaste asustus seotud seal u. 7000-5000 aastat tagasi eksisteerinud ulatusliku laguuni kallastega. Ruhnu saarel rajati u. 7200 ja 6200 aastat tagasi kiviaegsed jahilaagrid otse rannavööndisse, vaid mõne meetri võrra meretasemest kõrgemale. Samuti Tallinna kesklinnas Vabaduse väljaku alal 5000 aasta eest, mis sel ajal moodustas osa avatud lahe rannast. Rekonstruktsioonid näitasid, et asustusmuster muutus u. 4700 aastat tagasi, mil asulakohti hakati rajama sisemaale seoses üleminekuga põlluharimisele ja karjakasvatusele. Töö tulemused kinnitavad loodusteaduslike andmete ja geoinformaatiliste meetoditega arheoloogilisi hüpoteese Eesti ja lähialade kiviaegse asustuse paiknemise kohta, täpsustavad rannasidusa elatusviisiga ajajärgu kestust ning kiviaja inimeste elupaigaeelistusi ja kohastumust erinevat tüüpi rannikutel. In this thesis, past sea level changes and palaeolandscapes around Stone Age settlement sites in Narva-Luga lowland, Tallinn city centre and on Ruhnu Island were reconstructed in order to define the location of the settlements compared to their contemporary shoreline and coastal setting. Geographic information system approach was used for palaeogeographical modelling based on spatio-temporal correlation of datasets originating from several natural science and archaeological research disciplines. Palaeogeographical reconstructions show that in Narva-Luga area hunter-fisher-gatherer settlements were located on the shores of a large lagoon, which existed there c. 7000-5000 years ago. On Ruhnu Island hunting and fishing camps were established directly in the beach zone, only a few metres above sea level at about 7200 and 6200 years ago. Similarly, in Tallinn, 5000 years ago a camp was established on the beach of the wide palaeo-bay, which shore crossed the city centre at that time. The reconstructions showed that this settlement pattern changed c. 4700 years ago, when areas away from the coast were chosen for habitation, indicating a shift in subsistence strategy towards farming. Jsou přiblíženy dnešní vědecké výzvy v této oblasti; objasněna terminologie i legislativa; která je pro tuto oblast také velice zásadní. Hlavní část dizertační práce je následně věnována výzkumu vlastního hybridního řešení; kryptosystému. Jedná se o řešení; které nenaplňuje pouze jeden bezpečnostní princip (např. pouze autentičnost); nýbrž o řešení; které nabízí všechny požadované principy informační bezpečnosti v energetice. Je provedena hloubková analýza dnešních řešení; které jsou následně evaluovány vlastními měřeními i pomocí současné aktuální literatury. Následně je proveden návrh kombinací symetrických a asymetrických kryptografických algoritmů; tak aby byla zaručena efektivita výsledného systému; ale také zachována jeho komplexnost systému. Jedná se o kombinaci symetrických blokových algoritmů elektronické kódové knihy; zajišťující autentizaci a integritu pomocí náhodných klíčů; řetězení šifrovaného textu zajišťující důvěrnost; společně s algoritmem Diffieho-Hellmana nad eliptickými křivkami zajišťující bezpečnou distribuci a výměnu symetrických tajných klíčů. V neposlední řadě je přiblížen provedený vlastní vývoj a optimalizace hybridního kryptosystému. Je představeno vlastní řešení pro reprezentaci velkých čísel a modulární algebru v zařízení s limitovanými zdroji; které je ověřeno experimentálními měřeními. Dále je rozebrán vlastní návrh; validace a optimalizace řešení náhodných hardwarových generátorů (založených na efektivním principu kvantizační chyby a protichůdných oscilátorů). Je také řešena navržená část symetrické kryptografie; kde je využito dvou dostupných knihoven; které jsou následně znatelně optimalizovány. V neposlední řadě je představen provedený rozsáhlý výzkum kryptografie eliptických křivek a možností distribuce symetrického klíče. Jsou implementovány algoritmy pro výpočty s body eliptických křivek nad polem s prvočíselným řádem i nad polem řádu 2. Realizace pak zahrnovala více než 50 eliptických křivek různých standardů; kde největším úspěchem jsou křivky nad polem prvočísel o řádu p = 256. Tyto křivky v době řešení nebyly na takto hardwarových platformách řešeny. Nakonec jsou představeny originální výsledky výzkumu; který se zabýval vhodnou volbou křivek a studií jejich doménových parametrů z pohledu vztahu velikosti k rychlosti operací nad křivkou.; The dissertation thesis focuses on research in the optimisation of telemetry systems in energy from the perspective of information security. The thesis deals with nowadays challenges in information security; its definition as well as its methods. The main focus is on the area; where devices with limited resources such as memory or computational power are used. These devices pose security risks that may affect the entire smart grid infrastructure. Nowadays research challenges terminology and legislative; which is crucial in the defined area; are brought closer. The main part of this thesis is devoted to the research of the author’s own hybrid solution – the hybrid cryptosystem. The solution fulfils all necessary principles of information security – authenticity; confidentiality; integrity and data freshness. An analysis of today’s solutions is provided together with a complex evaluation based on own experimental measurements and available literature sources. Subsequently; a combination of symmetric and asymmetric cryptography algorithms is designed that provides both high efficiency and complexity. It is a combination of the symmetric block cyphers Electronic Code Book; which provides authenticity and integrity by using random keys; Cipher Block Chaining; which provided confidentiality; and the asymmetric algorithm of Diffie-Hellman over Elliptic Curves; which provides key agreement scheme over an unsecured channel. Further; the development and optimisation of the hybrid cryptosystem are brought in light. The proprietary solution of large number representation and modular algebra in a device with limited resources is presented and validated via own experimental measurements. Moreover; the own design is analysed and the two proposed hardware generators (based on efficient methods of quantization error and opposing oscillators) are evaluated and optimised. Additionally; the symmetric part of the cryptosystem is also investigated; where two main solutions are highly optimised. Last but not least; deep research on the cryptography of elliptic curves and the key distribution scheme is presented. Two main curve types are dealt with – over a finite field and over a field of characteristic two. The implementation included more than 50 elliptic curves of different standards. The implementation of the curves of order p = 256 has the highest impact. These curves were not addressed on such devices at the time of solution. Finally; the original research results of possible speed optimisation via using special elliptic curves are introduced. The relationship between curve domain parameters and point computational efficiency is studied. This last part brings also promising results for the field of effective cryptographic algorithm – the lightweight cryptography.
