▼ In a production environment, physical and cyber-related failures become unavoidable because of the complexity of highly connected manufacturing systems and a finite equipment life cycle. The main purpose of this thesis is to investigate optimal maintenance outsourcing and replacement policies in the presence of cyber-threats, as well as policies to achieve channel coordination via cost subsidization. Although well-developed maintenance outsourcing literature has addressed many advanced and trending issues such as the costs and benefits of new technology adoptions, learning effects, forgetting effects, and systems with back-up machines, no study has looked at the effect of cyber threats on connected production systems. Besides filling this gap, this thesis addresses the most common replacement policies including preventive maintenance with minimal repairs and age replacement. The advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) has enabled the creation of "smart" manufacturing systems, However the resulting connected format makes these systems potential targets for cyber-attacks. Manufacturers have to face a difficult decision as to whether they should adopt costly security technologies or let the manufacturing systems be vulnerable to cyber-threats. This study develops a model addressing this dilemma by providing some insights into the effects of cost subsidization and installation of security systems on the system profit. Our findings suggest that a manufacturer can trade off cost subsidization to gain flexibility in the maintenance decision-making process. The study also provides evidence that, for a "smart" manufacturing system, the existence of a security system guarantees at least a marginal increase in system profit. With the help of an extensive numerical study, we provide guidelines for optimizing system profit and addressing the effect of various model parameters (such as a monetary parameter, failure rate and a cyber-attack related parameter) on the value of a security system.In the second part of this thesis, we build analytical models to deal with cyber-threats in the context of a production system that utilizes the age replacement policy. We propose two different scenarios involving cyber-threats. First, cyber-attacks do not disrupt the physical production system. In this case, we replace the broken components either when the system has a physical breakdown or when a predetermined amount of time (T) elapses. Second, we need to replace the system right after it suffers from a successful cyber-attack. Thus, we replace the system components if one of three following events happen, whichever comes first: (1) a successful cyber-attack, (2) a physical breakdown, or (3) a predetermined time (T) elapses. We analytically provide optimal policies to minimize the expected cost for these scenarios. Finally, we carry out sensitivity analyses to show the effect of different model parameters on the value of a cyber security system. Bakgrund: Människor lever idag allt längre. Jämfört med medellivslängden i Sverige som varit ständigt tilltagande över tid har pensionsåldern hållit sig relativt konstant vilket innebär att en pension som tjänats ihop under samma arbetslivslängd nu måste räcka till försörjning av fler levnadsår. Därav blir införandet av en höjd pensionsålder aktuellt för att behålla välståndet i Sverige. Enligt Statens offentliga utredningar (2012:28) finns god grund för antagandet att arbetstagare kommer kunna stanna kvar längre i arbetslivet. Emellertid menar Arbetsmiljöverket (2016) att vissa fysiskt krävande arbeten kan vara svårt för en äldre arbetskraft att utföra. Utvecklingen i samhället pekar mot att ett införande av en höjd pensionsålder kommer bli verklighet, ett faktum som gör att Age Management blir allt mer aktuellt i och med att människor kommer stanna kvar i arbetslivet upp i en högre ålder än tidigare. Det kan då behövas mer konkreta verktyg för att hantera en åldrande arbetskraft i praktiken av den orsaken att de potentiellt sett kan ha andra behov som bör tillgodoses för att få äldre medarbetare att stanna kvar i yrkeslivet längre. Den forskning som finns idag kring Age Management har framförallt bedrivits på individnivå, mindre forskning finns kring hur eventuella förändringar skulle hanteras på ett organisatoriskt plan, varför den här studien ämnar belysa hur organisationer skulle hantera ett scenario där äldre stannar på arbetsplatsen längre. Syfte: Syftet med studien är att genom en kvalitativ ansats analysera hur företag arbetar med Age Management idag och vilka effekter en höjd pensionsålder skulle medföra. Det för att kunna avgöra huruvida Age Management skulle kunna användas som ett verktyg för att hantera eventuella utmaningar som skulle kunna uppstå vid införandet av en höjd pensionsålder. Genomförande: Studien är fenomenologisk och karaktäriseras av ett kvalitativt tillvägagångssätt. Empirin har samlats in genom ett målstyrt urval. Sammanlagt har elva fallföretag och fyra andra relevanta aktörer intervjuats. Slutsats: Studien resulterar i slutsatsen att en höjd pensionsålder kommer påverka företagen inom följande områden: kompetens, hälsa, attityder och arbetsmiljö. Den definitiva slutsatsen är att det finns ett behov av Age Management som ett managementverktyg då arbete med Age Management kommer bidra mot ett mer hållbart arbetsliv där sannolikheten är större att äldre medarbetare kommer välja att vara yrkesverksamma de extra åren en höjd pensionsålder skulle innebära.

▼ The recent economic downturn has intensified challenges associated with financing, staffing and increasing demands for services, which public park and recreation agencies must manage to sustain the quality and quantity of services. Employees’ fulfillment of assigned tasks is no longer sufficient to support their agencies as the agencies respond to volatile external environments in a flexible and adaptable manner. It is urgent that employees in public park and recreation agencies go and beyond what is typically expected or required by performing, for example, organizational citizenship behavior during times of economic hardship. Organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) is characterized by discretionary cooperative gestures that can enhance efficiency and effectiveness of the organization as a whole, including five behavioral dimensions: (1) altruism, (2) conscientiousness, (3) sportsmanship, (4) courtesy, and (5) civic virtue. A parallel trend challenging public park and recreation agencies is an aging workforce. Accommodating the needs of an age-diverse workforce and motivating such a workforce have become a compelling issue to public park and recreation agencies. A question arises as to the extent to which, or whether or not, age makes motivating employees’ engagement in OCB more complicated. To identify strategies that can effectively motivate age-diverse workforces towards engagement in OCB, there is a need to take a closer look at age-related OCB processes. Therefore, the purpose of the current study is to explore the roles of chronological age and subjective age identity in shaping the two OCB-specific motives (i.e., prosocial and impression management motives) and OCBs. The current study employed a cross-sectional survey method to collect data from full-time employees in municipal park and recreation agencies in the state of Illinois. A mixed-mode strategy characterized by the use of both paper-based and web-based survey formats was adopted to increase the response rate and reduce coverage errors. Of the 2301 survey invitations, 607 survey respondents provided usable responses, yielding a response rate of 26.4%. Drawing on findings from personality research, the current study predicted a curvilinear relationship between chronological age and OCBs in that middle-aged employees would have greatest engagement in OCBs. Counter to the prediction, the data failed to support a curvilinear relationship between age and OCBs. Instead, a linear pattern was found to be sufficient to describe the relationships of age with two OCB subdimensions (conscientiousness and sportsmanship) and overall OCB. Guided by the principles of socioemotional selective theory, the current study examined age differences in prosocial and impression management motives. The data of the current study confirmed the positive relationship between age and prosocial motives and the negative relationship between age and impression management motives. Abstract In this study constructed a life course –aware age management model for the health care sector so it can be exploited by health care organizations nationally. The purpose of this study is to describe and explain how leadership, through the use of life course –aware age management, affects the well-being, and describe amount of sick leaves and retirement of diverse-employees in health care before and after intervention. The research consisted of three parts: 1) a description of earlier age management models, 2) a description of the needs and requirements of age-diverse employees for age management, and 3) a description of life course –aware age management effect on the well-being of an age-diverse workforce in the health care sector, and a description of amount of sick leaves and retirement of diverse-employees in health care before and after intervention. The results of parts one and two were made into the Life course –Aware Age Management Model. The well-being data were collected from nurses and doctors from one central hospital´s area of operation in 2014 (N = 702) and 2016 (N = 764). The research was conducted using intervention research methods. Quantitative data were analyzed by using statistical multivariate methods. Statistics on sick leave and retirement were also exploited in the data comparison. Employee age management needs were surveyed in connection with the first well-being measurement. Qualitative data were analyzed using deductive content analysis. The doctors and nurses valuated the realization of well-being mainly in the same way. No significant statistical association was found between employee age and well-being. Management using the Life course –Aware Age Management Model influenced employee well-being so that the way in which leadership was experienced improved between 2014 and 2016. The change was statistically extremely significant (p = 0.001). No impact was found on the amount of sick leaves and retirements. The amount of sick leaves and retirement was found no statistically significant change. The knowledge generated in this study can be exploited in the management of age-diverse workforces in health care. Using the Life course –Aware Age Management Model, employers can identify the support an age-diverse workforce requires to maintain their know-how, working ability and work-life balance. The results of this study can be utilized in leadership, education, and age management and well-being research.

▼ In the past decade, an increasing discussion has taken place regarding the employment of hotel service robots. One critical issue is the impact service robots exhibit on customer experience. However, most of the existing studies focus on service robots’ technical functions or customer’s adoption behavior instead of customers’ psychological or attitudinal reactions toward the robot. Meanwhile, the emergence of humanoid robots has raised great attention from both researchers and industry practitioners. Humanlike features (e.g. facial expressions, emotions, and motions) inherently affect customer experience in a hotel environment. Nevertheless, limited literature exists in incorporating service robots’ anthropomorphism and service attributes into customer experience and perceived brand equity. Not many studies have included both the service robots’ traits and customers’ personality traits when assessing customer experience. Therefore, the purpose of the current study is to explore and understand the impact of service robots’ appearance, service efficiency, and service customization on customer experience interacting with the service robot in the context of a hotel front desk check-in service. Customers’ personality traits such as robot anxiety, technology readiness, and self-image congruity are also taken into consideration. This study also examines the influence of service robots’ appearance and service attributes on hotel customers’ perceptions toward the hotel brand equity. The current study used experiments and online surveys to test the theoretical model and the perception changes toward the hotel brand equity. Two samples of 220 and 161 hotel customers who have completed the check-in services in person in the past 12 months were recruited for Study 1 and Study 2, respectively. Pilot studies were conducted, and hypothetical scenarios were embedded in the online surveys. The results showed that hotel service robots’ appearance (extremely humanoid vs. humanoid vs. non-humanoid) did not lead to different customers’ experiences interacting with the service robot. Service efficiency was a significant factor while service customization was not in affecting customer experiences. Customers’ levels of technology readiness and self-image congruity exerted significant impacts on customer experiences. Moreover, customers did not show obvious perception changes before and after interacting with the hypothetical service robot. Theoretical and practical contributions were discussed. ▼ Scholarship and the popular press alike assert that, within the workplace and the world, there are distinct generational groups who are hallmarked by fundamental differences. Generational scholarship, undergirded by the priori assumption that generational differences must be managed, has become a well traversed field despite very little empirical evidence to substantiate the claims made about the attitudes, values, and beliefs of these purported generational cohorts. Scholars debate the veracity of generational characteristics, but few have taken critical approaches and noted the absence of theory and meta-discourse in the field. All the while, the over-simplified stereotypes are perpetuatued and employed in making fundamental decisions about the lives and work of the old and the young. In this dissertation, I present a grounded qualitative and phronetic study that offers a framework for a more nuanced approach to generational scholarship. Specifically, I employ qualitative methods and take a phronetic approach to examine young professionals’ (a) sensemaking of generational constructs and (b) identification/disidentification with generational archetypes. This dissertation reveals the ways in which participants made sense of popular generational archetypes as stereotypes or generalizations that exist in broad contexts of media and culture but are unconsidered in the workplace. Further, in the context of work, participants demonstrated very limited identification or disidentification with popular generational archetypes. Despite this, participants created and enacted generational differences in their workplaces based on age and tenure in the industry through the development of emergent archetypes. Methodologically, this dissertation demonstrates the utility of more emic approaches to generational scholarship and evidences the need for situated and needs based approaches. Theoretically, this dissertation demonstrates the utility of sensemaking and identification in generational scholarship. Moreover, the insights gleaned from these frameworks illustrate the need for the critical examinations in the field, and meta-discourse about our assumptions.

▼ This thesis develops a framework for conducting stock assessments that unifies age- and size-structured assessment models, creating what we term “age-size-structured models.” Several studies have explored the application of age-size-structured models to fisheries data. However, most are specific applications or were limited in scope. There is a dearth of generalized single-stock age-size-structured assessment models, which led to the creation and testing of such a model. An age-size-structured assessment method is developed, and examined first using a simulation study, and then using data for two species in the Eastern Bering Sea: Tanner crab (Chionoecetes bairdi) and Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus). Simulations are used to test under which conditions the assessment method is biased or imprecise. The simulations are summarized using a measure of the relative error between true and estimated spawning stock biomass. The simulation study suggested little bias and relatively high precision, such that the estimation method was considered acceptable for use in management. The results from the example application were compared to those from the official NOAA assessments. The estimates of mature male biomass for Tanner crab were found to be similar to those from the most recent stock assessment, but the estimates of spawning stock biomass for Pacific cod differed between the age-size-structured model and the latest official assessment, particularly after the mid-2000s. Some of the dissimilarity may be because maturity and growth are modelled based on size-dynamics in the age-size-structured model, while the official assessment considers only age-dynamics. Nevertheless, the age-size-structured model produces relatively robust estimates, and could be used as an alternative model to which current stock assessments could be compared. This generalized age-size-structured fishery stock assessment method could be applied to any data-rich stock globally, particularly where a species exhibits a mix of age- and size-based life history and fishery dynamics. Yleisin käytösongelma, jonka takia koiranomistajat hakeutuvat käytösneuvojalle Yhdysvalloissa ja Isossa-Britanniassa on aggressio vieraita ihmisiä kohtaan. Koirien luovuttaminen uuteen kotiin alle kahdeksan viikon iässä, sekä sosiaalisilta ominaisuuksiltaan monipuoliset kasvatusolosuhteet elinviikkojen 4-12 aikana ovat ulkomaisissa tutkimuksissa yhdistetty vähentyneeseen aggressio- ja pelkokäyttäytymiseen aikuisena. Suomessa koirien luovutusiän jakaumaa ja sen yhteyttä aggressio- ja pelkokäyttäytymiseen ei ole tutkittu, eikä kartoitusta kasvatusolosuhteiden ominaisuuksista ole aiemmin tehty. Suomen Kennelliiton sääntöjen mukaan koiraa ei tule luovuttaa alle seitsemänviikkoisena, mutta luovutuksen ylärajaa ei ole määritetty. Tästä huolimatta sosiaalisessa mediassa on ollut paljon keskustelua luovutusikäsuosituksen myöhäistämisestä 10-12 viikkoon. Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli tutkia suomalaisella koira-aineistolla, nouseeko aggressio- ja pelkokäyttäytymisen todennäköisyys luovutusiän noustessa sekä onko mahdollista määrittää luovutusikä, joka olisi ihanteellisin mahdollisimman vähäisen aggressio- ja pelkokäyttäytymisen kannalta. Aineisto kerättiin internet-kyselystä, jonka tuloksena tutkimukseen kelpuutettiin 5067 koiraa. 30,9 % koirista oli luovutettu uuteen kotiin alle kahdeksanviikkoisina, 37,6 % kahdeksanviikkoisina ja 31,5 % yli kahdeksanviikkoisina. Tutkimukseen kelpuutetuista koirista 77,7 % oli kasvatettu ennen luovutustaan kasvattajan kotona, 14,7 % kasvattajan kotona erillisessä tilassa ja 7,6 % kenneleissä. Eri sosiaalisissa tilanteissa esiintyneiden ongelmakäytösten yhteys luovutusikään selvitettiin käyttämällä khi-neliö -testejä ja ristiintaulukointia. Tutkimuksessa havaittiin, että luovutusiällä on yhteys seuraaviin ongelmakäytöksiin: tuttujen ihmisten vältteleminen ja heille muriseminen, koiran kodin ulkopuolella kohdattujen vieraiden ihmisten vältteleminen, pureminen tai sen yrittäminen ja heille muriseminen, kotona vierailevien vieraiden ihmisten vältteleminen, pureminen tai sen yrittäminen sekä heille muriseminen ja haukkuminen sekä eläinlääkärin vältteleminen. Kaikissa edellämainituissa ongelmakäytöksissä > 8 viikkoisina luovutetut koirat olivat edustettuna odotusarvoa enemmän, kun taas 8 ja < 8 viikon iässä luovutetut osoittivat ongelmakäytöksiä odotusarvoa vähemmän. Luovutusiällä oli yhteys myös vieraille koirille haukkumiseen kodin ulkopuolella. Tätä käytöstä osoittivat odotusarvoa enemmän > 8 viikkoisina luovutetut ja vähiten < 8 viikkoisina luovutetut. ▼ An aging population results in retirement ages going up and the age difference between subordinates and managers growing bigger. Despite an extensive literature review on trust within organizations, we have not been able to identify studies related to the influence of age difference between managers and their subordinates. The main purpose of this thesis is to gain a deeper understanding of the influence of age difference on trust in relationships between managers and subordinates, and more specifically how the age difference influences the trust in the relationship with their older subordinates. Our research question has been formulated as follows: How does age difference influence trust between young managers and their older subordinates? Despite studies on trust increasing in popularity over the last years, we identified a research gap since there is no previous studies addressing the influence of age difference on trust between managers and subordinates. Specifically, the influence of the age difference between young managers and older subordinates and the trust between them in their relationship. In order to fulfil the purpose of our thesis we have conducted a qualitative research, where we gathered qualitative data through the use of semi-structured interviews. These interviews were conducted in a Dutch multinational production company employing approximately 25.000 employees. By analysing the data we gathered through our semi-structured interviews and relating it to the theoretical framework we built up from pre-existing literature, we were able to answer our research question. As a theoretical foundation, we have used the key theories on trust: trust, factors of perceived trustworthiness, antecedent of trustworthy behaviour and employee-organisation relationship. The findings demonstrate that the age difference has influence on an individual’s behaviour, employee expectations and factors of trust. We found an influence of the age difference on benevolence as well as for ability. Young managers are perceived to have different values than older subordinates, resulting in an influence on integrity. Factors related to the social exchange influence trust in other ways as interpersonal relationships have been found to influence the age difference. Finally, the age difference does influence individuals and relational factors due to the expectations of young managers being perceived as strengthening trust with their subordinates. Our thesis has contributed to the theory of trust by gaining a deeper knowledge of the influence of age difference on trust between managers and their subordinates. Also we have opened up new areas for research concerning the influence of age difference on trust in other industries or reversed situations. Together, published information and survey results indicated that: (1) different instructional methods are more developmentally appropriate for different ages of learners; (2) teachers have natural preferences for particular management styles; and (3) there are distinguishing instructional management styles between teachers who choose to teach at lower grade levels (PreK-3) and those who choose to teach at upper grade levels (4-8). The researcher used two survey instruments to measure teachers’ instructional management styles and their grade level preferences. The Chi Square analysis of grade level preferences by instructional management styles was significant, indicating the proportion of teachers in the four instructional management styles who preferred to teach lower elementary students differed from the proportion of teachers who preferred to teach upper elementary students. The results of the research indicated that educational leaders could use the survey instruments to predict satisfaction for teachers and effective teaching for students. Other research suggested that teachers who teach grade levels of students that generally match their natural instructional management styles would likely enjoy greater job satisfaction, which, as a result, may lead to more effective teaching and longevity in the classroom. Based on the data obtained from research and the survey of teachers’ instructional management styles and grade level preferences, pre-service teachers can make informed career decisions.

Het effect van leeftijd op de relatie tussen ervaren inzet van High Performance Work Practices en ervaren werkdruk Abstract Organizations need to become more and more efficient and cost-effective. This has led to an increa¬sing interest in performance enhancement and optimization of human resources. High Performance Work Systems are systems of HR instruments, aimed at contributing to the organization strategy. Three different perspectives on the impact of HRM can be distinguished. The optimistic perspective, also known as the mutual gains model, states that both organization and employee benefit from HPWS. The pessimistic view acknowledges benefits for the organization, but emphasizes the dis¬advantages for employees. HPWS lead to intensification of work, which has a negative impact on wellbeing. Finally the skeptical perspective recognizes neither a positive nor negative impact of HRM. This study concentrates on one of the possible negative effects of HPWS – experience of increased work pressure. The Job Demands-Resources model states that certain resources – when providing for a person’s need – can compensate for negative effects of job demands. Which resources are able to compensate, is different for every individual and group, depending on their specific needs. When High Performance Work Practices (HPWP) serve an employee’s need, this HPWP will be experienced positively and thus will be able to compensate for negative effects of HPWS for this employee. Age seems to be a differentiating factor in employee’s needs. Young employees usually have a stronger orientation on growth, whereas older employees tend to be more focused on maintenance and prevention of losses. These orientations are also visible in employee’s needs and therefore influence their preferences for specific HR instru¬ments. From this perspective, a growth focused bundle of HR instruments can be interpreted as a resource for the younger employee and in this way provide compensation for increased work pressure. It is expected that a bundle of HR instruments aimed at maintenance, will provide in needs of the older employees and serve as a compensating factor for this group of employees. This study aims to test whether age has a moderating effect on the relation¬ship between HPWS and experienced work pressure. Using questionnaire data gathered among 606 employees, four hypotheses were tested. First the relationship between HPWP’s and increased experienced work pressure was analyzed. In the next step the possible moderation of age on the relationship was added. Finally the negative effect of growth focused HPWP’s on experienced work pressure was tested among the younger employees and the negative effect of maintenance focused HPWP’s on work pressure, for older employees. Epilepsy is the most common chronic neurological condition in the United States, and it is incurable. Those who suffer from it must engage in both collaborative and independent management of their condition for the remainder of their lives. The treatment and care of those with epilepsy must therefore include not only medical interventions, which alone cannot cure the disorder or prevent the disability associated with it, but must also prepare persons for and facilitate their independent management—self-management—of the disorder. Self-management is a process that affects important outcomes including resource utilization, mortality, and quality of life. In the United States, those age 60 years and older have the highest incidence of new-onset epilepsy. Despite the high incidence of epilepsy in this population, coupled with the knowledge that self-management affects important outcomes, a thorough search of the literature suggests that self-management experiences of older adults diagnosed with epilepsy late in life have not been investigated. The purpose of the study was to examine, using a qualitative descriptive design, the self-management experiences of older adults diagnosed with epilepsy at or after age 60. Semi-structured interviews were used to generate data. A total of 20 older adults participated. Major findings indicate that older adults in the sample, and particularly the women, experienced a delay in receiving an epilepsy diagnosis. These older adults experienced multiple problems and life changes since diagnosis—some of which are unique to this population and many of which are amenable to intervention. These older adults devise and execute a variety of management strategies, within a system, that are classified as disease/treatment-focused and problem/life changes-focused. These strategies further are categorized as proactive or reactive, with proactive strategies being pre-planned and effective, and reactive strategies being unplanned and less effective. Knowledge generated from this study reveals the problems experienced by older adults with epilepsy, as well as their management needs. These findings will inform future studies, the aim of which will be to investigate more thoroughly these problems and needs and, ultimately, to inform interventions aimed at resolving this population’s problems and concerns while also improving outcomes.
