▼ This dissertation is a discursive analysis of the Suidlanders DVD2. It explores white
Afrikaner identity through discourses such as those offered in the Kill the Boer debate, and an all-encompassing fear discourse that flourishes through crime, a South African terrorism as experienced through farm attacks, and a perceived 'white genocide' conspiracy. The dissertation examines through critical discourse analysis how ways of talking about ANC rule and the 'problems' experienced in the new dispensation are used to validate an
Afrikaner identity that, were it not for a prevailing fear discourse, would otherwise remain on the fringes of identity in the country. The dissertation concludes that a traditional, apartheid era
Afrikaner identity persists when opposing discourses across the cultural divide are pitted against each other, that 'white' cannot conceive of itself without 'black' and vice versa, and that
Afrikaner identity as portrayed through an extremist group like the Suidlanders, is an identity caught in discursive limbo where everyday experience of fear paralyses all other means of rationalising a sense of self beyond that of a potential victim.

▼ This dissertation seeks to expose comparatively the ideological, institutional and economic underpinnings which have contributed to evolving nationalisms within two dual societies, those being Canada and South Africa. It attempts to explain the parallel historical development of
Afrikaner and French Canadian nationalisms as they contend with a hostile and dominant English element beholden to the Empire. Expansion and rebellion coincides with the advent of British colonialism as French Canadian and
Afrikaner segments find their previously dominant positions reversed. Their rural, agrarianist, peripheral culture evolves in isolation from the increasingly metropolitan British core culture. Demographics are here determined in conjunction with the interplay of alien cultures including that of the indigenes. Ethnic pre-nationalist consciousness is assessed according to intergroup contact. Religion and its institutional accessories are then looked at as they contribute to an evolving consciousness. Fragmented cultures are firmly imbued with a religious character, and religioideological development adapts to new circumstances by preaching messianism, pre-destination as well as analogising the plight of their respective disciples with that of the ancient Israelites. The lines between temporal and heavenly matters are here smudged as Dutch Reformed and Catholic churches promote group enclosure mobilising members around core cultural and language issues so as to preserve clerical power.

▼ D.Litt. et Phil.
The international and national historical realities triggered the fragmented white South African business community to unite. These realities also influenced the National Party (NP) government to consider the views of business people with regards to the impact of apartheid politics on the South African economy. South African business people, and especially the Afrikaner business people, exploited the access that they had with Afrikaner political decision makers by influencing them through business organisations such as, the Urban Foundation. The united South African business people took on a leadership position as a result of their increased influence on the political decision-makers. As the leadership group with an inclination towards a non racial democracy, the business community soon found themselves at loggerheads with the NP government. The enlightened Afrikaner business persons refrained from criticising government openly, and supported government’s reform strategies in order to keep debate on reforms alive. The Afrikaner business community shed their ‘passive resistance’ and legitimisation role after the Rubicon speech in August 1985. From thereon, they openly played a role of bridge building by reaching out to anti-apartheid movements and to identify common areas of interest within the society. Towards 1987 enlightened Afrikaner business people were active in the broader South African business community and they were able to mobilize the Consultative Business Movement (CBM) to participate in the dismantling of apartheid. The vision of business was to establish a free market system through broad base consultation. The business community actively supported the democratisation of South African businesses, the redistribution of wealth, the active participation of blacks in a free market economy, as well as the advancement of growth in black communities. The Enlightened Afrikaner business people adopted a social involvement strategy that piloted Black Economic Empowerment transactions, such as Sanlam’s initiative to broaden black equity share ownership. Broad based consultation also cultivated a practical approach to the economy and established a framework for debate that incorporated socialist and capitalist ideas. This compromise strategy was aimed to counter non-viable socialist options regarding redistribution of wealth and the opening up of the economy to previously disadvantaged groups. After 1990, when the NP government accepted that the political landscape must change, the business community embraced a change role, a bridge building role, a facilitator role and a catalyst role to usher in a New South Africa with a bigger middle class and acceptable free market principles as government policy. Accordingly, the enlightened Afrikaner business people actively participated in the negotiation for a political future of South Africa. However, they always remained politically neutral during the actual political negotiation process.

▼ Genetic and phenotypic characterisation is essential
for the conservation and utilisation of farm animal genetic
resources, especially indigenous types that are often disregarded
due to lower production potential compared to commercial breeds. In
this study a genetic characterisation was performed on 144 Namaqua
Afrikaner sheep kept at the Karakul Experimental Station (KES) and
Carnarvon Experimental Station (CES) and a private farm Welgeluk
(WGK) using 22 ISAG recommended microsatellite markers. Results of
this study showed that the mean number of alleles were low (3.6 for
KES to 4.2 for WGK) for the loci tested. Heterozygosity values
across loci ranged between 46% for WGK, 48% for KES and 55% for
CES, indicating low to moderate genetic variation within the
different populations. The AMOVA analyses revealed that 89.5% of
the genetic variation in the breed was due to the differences
within populations and 10.5% due to differences between
populations. The genetic distance estimates revealed a close
relationship between the CES and WGK populations. The population
structure confirmed the differentiation of three clusters with
relationships between the CES and WGK populations. Phenotypic
characterisation of the breed was limited to the Carnarvon flock,
where production and morphological data were recorded.
Morphological measurements indicated an average body length of 71.2
cm and 68.7 cm for rams and ewes respectively. Over 60% of the
sheep had their tail twisted to the left. The molecular data
provided by this study will serve as a reference for genetic
management and breeding strategies of the indigenous Namaqua
Afrikaner sheep. Copyright

▼ With its
Afrikaner Nationalist past and its current status as an Afropolitan hub,
Voortrekker Road simultaneously constitutes a place of separation and transgression,
resulting in a quotidian tableau of urban life that could in some ways be read as a microcosm
of social dynamics in contemporary South Africa. This thesis is a study on the intersecting
microhistories at play in Voortrekker Road as a site of fractured negotiation within South
Africa as a transitional society, and a place where multiple historical narratives intersect and
become rewritten.
In interpreting and portraying the layered, entangled histories, attention will be paid to
microhistories and the fragment in order to steer away from totalising perspectives.
Furthermore, the study draws heavily on the theories of Walter Benjamin in order to position
a montage approach to history at the center of interpreting the historical layers enveloped
along the road. A montage approach to historical thinking aims to deviate from the
deterministic method of Hegelianism. Gyanendra Pandey emphasises how ‘part of the
importance of the “fragmentary” point of view lies in that it resists the drive for a shallow
homogenization and for other, potentially richer definitions of the “nation” and the future
political community.’
Particular attention is paid to the microhistories and intimate business praxis amongst
migrant entrepreneurs and informal businesses in order to consider the explosive creative
refunctioning of Voortrekker Road in relation to its socially engineered segregationist history.
In consideration of Voortrekker Road as a startling respite from xenophobic violence, the
study considers the infusions of affect into the cityscape. As AbdouMaliq Simone aptly
prompts ‘What are some of the ways in which urban residents are building a particular
emotional field in the city, trying to restore a very physical sense of connection to one
another?’

▼ Molla's Music is a novella about Maureen (Molla), a white Afrikaans woman born in 1935 in Cape Town, who faced poverty and abandonment before apartheid and who, during apartheid, faced the choice between an unwanted pregnancy with a married man, and a carreer in music funded by the father who had betrayed her. Maureen is introduced in three sections with very different voices in each. In the first section she is depicted in the context of being cared for by a single mother with severe post natal depression. The short chapters and long sentences reflect the naïvity of the
subject, whose unfiltered observations allow the reader to bear witness to the traumas that dictate her character later in life. She was so ashamed of her poverty, her father's abandonment, and her pregnancy, that she hid all memories of her past from her children and grandchildren and almost managed to die with all her secrets in tact. The second section becomes more sophisticated with longer chapters. The reader is guided through the fifties by a young adult whose adolescent memories inform the events that unfold over a mere two days. Finally, the last section consists of only one chapter, but it reviews an entire life. It is written in the first person, revealing the identity of the narrator. Maureen taught herself piano before school. Her father played the violin and her dedication to music seems to be a mechanism for connecting to him and what his absence from her life represents. It is an absense that eludes consolidation until her death. Molla proved to be such a gifted child that she skipped two years of school and took on music as an extra
subject until matric, but financial strain and the shackles of patriarchy limited her options and only after years of working, does she apply to the UCT college of music. She inherits a piano from her landlords, who are evicted during the implementation of the Group Areas Act of 1957. In the years after that, playing piano becomes her private liberation practised in plain sight, on the only heirloom that persists from her past. When she dies, her granddaughter has a heritage that beckons to be resolved and remembered. She does not play the piano she inherited from her grandmother, but starts to investigate its past. In the course of Molla's Music, I explore themes of
Afrikaner identity, and question modes of being for white Afrikaans women in South Africa today. By offering an intimate depiction of an individual's search for meaning, while negotiating the forces of Apartheid and patriarchy, especially as a confluence of forces, I hope to gain clarity with regard to my own questions about identity.

▼ The abiotic environment plays an important role in cattle production. Key abiotic elements evaluated in this study are rainfall and temperature. This study was carried out to assess the effect and contribution of rainfall and temperature, amid other factors, on pre- and post-weaning growth traits of
Afrikaner cattle at Matopos Research Institute from 1958 to 1997. Historical data generated from a genotype x environment interaction study at Matopos Research Institute was used to identify factors associated with the average daily weight gain of calves of
Afrikaner cattle breed. A total of 10 700 records were retrieved comprising of birth weight (BW), 90 day weight, 205 day weight and early post-weaning weight as well as additional corresponding rainfall and temperature data from 1958 to 1997. The rainfall and temperature data was computed asrainfall and temperature variability. The data was corrected for heteroscedasticity using the generalized least
squares approach (GLS) before running an ordinary least square regression (OLS) analysis to determine the association between growth rate and potential explanatory factors for average daily weight gain, pre-weaning weight gain and early post-weaning weight gain.

▼ The study focuses on the influence of Christian based education on the building of the
Afrikaner nation. The children settling with their parents in the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek (ZAR) after the Great Trek all received Christian based education. The unique way in which both the country and the nation developed was the result of Christian based education. It had a direct influence on the development and functioning of the ZAR resulting in the forming of a Christian country with a Christian based constitution and Christian based laws. Christianity and Christian based education also influenced the social lives, culture and worldview of the people living in the ZAR, leaving a permanent mark on the
Afrikaner nation.
The stern Calvinistic religion, together with the influences of early Pietism and the worldview of the Romanticism as well as the traditional Christian based education brought from the Netherlands, all worked together to mould the Afrikaners into a unique nation. Religion was the one outstanding factor that determined all aspects of the lives of the Afrikaners, from their character and worldview to their way of speech and the standard of education given to the children. The goal of all education was to enable children to study the Bible - the Handbook to Life - and to become members of the Church.
Their faith in and commitment to the Lord, was the force that kept the Afrikaners a unique nation with a strong character despite the extreme living conditions and changing circumstances through which they lived in the short years of the existence of the ZAR. The people living in the ZAR were the carriers of the influence of the Christian based education and the stories of their lives bear witness to the impact their education had on the development of the country and the nation. The legacy of Christian based education, as it was used in the ZAR, is still alive in the hearts and minds of Afrikaners today.
The focus of the thesis made it necessary to use material from several different academic fields. Aspects of South African Church history, the general and political history of South Africa and the ZAR, the history regarding the development of education, as well as the social and cultural history of the
Afrikaner nation were brought together to give a picture of the impact that Christian based education had on the ZAR.
The historical-critical method is used, in order to establish what really happened and to show its significance, both in the historical context and in the present situation. The theoretical framework being used is didactical theological.

▼ In anthropological studies place is often taken for granted, “just” the locale where
other interesting, more significant things happen (De Jongh 2006:79). I argue
that rather than a mere backdrop to activities, the landscape of Orania is
significant and that physical place is essential for the construction of an Orania
identity. I ethnographically examine whether the physical setting of Orania can be
seen as a prime signifying system through which a particular other interesting, more significant things happen (De Jongh 2006:79). I argue
that rather than a mere backdrop to activities, the landscape of Orania is
significant and that physical place is essential for the construction of an Orania
identity. I ethnographically examine whether the physical setting of Orania can be
seen as a prime signifying system through which a particular
Afrikaner ethnic
identity, as well as a set of socio-cultural values is communicated.
Occupying the physical land is a form of collective identity that helps create
ethnic identities (Tilley 2006:11-13). Orania is an authentic place-bound
expression of this quest for identity and Oranians define their identity through
their model of space and of their land. The physical boundaries are expanded
when support groups outside of the settlement become an integral part of the
activities in the community, and socio-political boundaries are tested by an inand
outflux of community members and the constant presence of South African
and international press, and visitors.
iv
Landscape does not merely comprise the land, but also includes the lived
experiences and attitudes of the inhabitants. Landscape as text, “a medium to be
read for the ideas, practices and contexts constituting the culture which created
it” (Ley 1985:419) proves to be a legitimate and constructive way to make sense
of the landscape. As with texts, the landscape as text is
subject to multiple
readings. The focus on textual landscape offers an expanded perspective on
space and place, and in this case texts also amplify the Oranian space
exponentially.
Different types of landscapes - culturescapes, landscape as text and textual
landscapes - are building blocks in the construction of an Orania identity. Finally,
I would emphasise that Orania, and by extension this study, is not just an
academic concept, but a product of the lived experiences and opinions of people
who are closely connected to land of their own..

▼ In the years approaching President F.W. De Klerk’s
announcement in 1990 that South Africa’s policies would be reformed
a number of the right wing groups realised that apartheid would
come to an end. This dissertation deals with one response, by the
Boere-Vryheidsbeweging (Boer Freedom Movement). By setting up a
settlement styled as a ‘growth point for
Afrikaner
self-determination’ in Pretoria’s eastern hinterland, in 1992, the
movement hoped to avert what its numbers saw as eventual black
majority rule. The aim of this study is to probe what has become of
this settlement roughly 20 years after the transition to full
democracy in 1994. The following questions were used as a guideline
to this end: (i) On what legal basis has the settlement’s property
been occupied?; (ii) Who are the people who moved to the settlement
over time?; (iii) How have they generated the capital with which to
develop the settlement?; (iv) What is the character of their
relationship with each other?; and (v) How have they dealt with
external authorities such as the state, province and local
municipality?
The findings of this study show that the settlement
of Kleinfontein has been kept as a set of undivided properties and
that none of the residents have individual title. They occupy the
settlement by internal agreement alone, and there is no
acknowledgement by either the state or private institutions of the
internal divisions that have been made. Over time, the founders of
the settlement managed to attract two categories of people to live
there. The first comprised relatively old lower middle-class people
who moved in because of the settlement’s affordability and
peacefulness. The second consisted of working age middle-class
people with professional jobs who moved in for reasons to do with
the ideology of
Afrikaner self-determination. As the movement of
the second category of people into the settlement accelerated,
internal disagreements developed between them and the first
category of people, and the settlement as a whole eventually became
so paralysed by the conflict that few people have chosen to move
there since. The disagreements mainly revolved around the fact that
the professionals wanted to transform the settlement so that it
meets the middle-class standards found in major South African
cities. The lack of consensus eventually resulted in several
conflicts with the state, placing a question mark over the
settlement’s continued existence in post-apartheid South
Africa.

▼ In 1991 a private town for Afrikaners was established on the bank of the Orange River, in the semi-desert of South Africa’s Northern Cape Province. As a deliberately Afrikaans, and thus white, community, the town’s aims and existence are controversial, but both its principles and practicalities are not unique. Endeavouring to build an Afrikaner homeland in multiracial South Africa seems incongruous, signalling a retreat from social heterogeneity as a fact of the contemporary world. It raises questions about what people do following a social, political and economic paradigm shift, and about what is occurring within a country with multiple and contradictory accounts of history and a traumatic recent past. It also means resisting the pressure to deal with the past, and therefore the present, in a certain way. Consequently, the frequent question of whether or not the town as an enterprise, or its residents, are racist, reveals instead a complex ordering of society. Life in Orania is filled with ordinary everyday activities of earning a living, raising and educating children, socialising, and practising religion in a town where Christian principles are explicit, each combining elements of intentionality and contingency. Once superficial similarity between residents can be taken for granted, the focus shifts to the differences between them, which rise and fall in importance, highlighting the circumstantial nature of group solidarity. This raises the question of what the differences within the community are, how deeply they reach, and where fundamental commonalities lie that prompt them to choose to build a future together. For the few hundred people involved in the enterprise, Orania is the only way they think they will have a recognisable future: they fear the demise of Afrikaners as an ethnic group through cultural assimilation or dispersal, emigration, and population decline. Their position of victimhood and vulnerability, shaped by the past, shapes their present actions in turn. Afrikaners’ interpretation of themselves as victims is easily supported by the popular historical narrative that Afrikaners have always struggled against outside authorities to be self-determining. This ethnographic study reveals that Orania is a concrete response to the fear that there may not be a place for Afrikaners in South Africa’s future, in the country to which they feel they belong and where their identity is rooted.

[etc.]
Between 1670 and 1700, 260 French Protestants fleeing religious persecution reached the refreshment station founded in 1652 by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) at the Cape of Good Hope. The refugees’ task was to develop newly colonised land and provide supplies for the Company’s ships in transit between Europe and Asia. The Huguenot community quickly came into conflict with the VOC local authorities, who were intent on assimilating the French Protestants into the dominant Dutch community. Their disputes revolved around the land grants, trade with the indigenous people and passing ships, the use of the French language in the administrative and cultural fields, as well as self-governance of their own community. Additionally, conditions of religious practice had to be approved of by the Cape authorities, despite the fact that the French and Dutch shared the same Calvinist faith.

▼ Until 1990, most black and progressive churches in Namibia were proponents of a contextual variant of liberation theology. In it, Black churches and liberationists who were bound together by suffering, oppression, and persecution affirmed the God-given value and dignity of black identity and black people. These churches spoke with a united voice against injustice on behalf of the voiceless and it initiated relief projects for the poor. From 1978-1992, the Council of Churches in Namibia (CCN), the largest, ecumenical para-church organization in the nation, was the most vocal proponent and practitioner of a public theology of liberation for poor and indigenous Namibians. In the post-independence era (1990-present), many formerly liberationist churches and community-service organizations are now espousing more therapeutic, pietistic theologies and philosophies that in practice represent a retreat from the public sphere, public policy, and diminished responsibility to and charitable engagement with poor Namibians. In this dissertation, I argue that, with the exception of the black Lutheran Church’s BIG project, it is poor, indigenous Federation women, not black churches, who are now doing liberation theology by the ways in which they lift up and organize around the God-given dignity of poor, black women. To do this, they are combining womanist, women-centered organizing with elements of black consciousness in order to build one of the most powerful poor people’s organizations in Namibia and in Southern Africa. Federation women are re-conceptualizing private, household problems and organizing nationally to reframe them as public issues with public solutions.

▼ M.A. (Political Studies)
This study sets out to establish the presence of socialist trends within extra-parliamentary groups in South Africa. The role of socialism within the Azanian People's Organisation (AZAPOj, which supports the Black Consciousness philosophy, is considered. The study simultaneously examines the presence of socialism in the Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging (AWB), as an all-white organisation. The study also indicates that socialism, in contrast with popular perceptions, is a complex socio-political system consisting of different variants. Socialism developed from, inter alia, discontentment with the supposed shortcomings of capitalist inspired democracies. Differing interpretations of socialism developed according to the specific needs of each society. At present, socialist ideologies are still mainly directed towards providing alternatives for economic inequalities and the welfare of the society in general. Three variants of socialism were identified for the purpose of this study. The first, democratic socialism, is closely related to the basic theory of democracy and therefore allows for the greatest extent of free market capitalism and private enterprise. The second, African socialism, developed as a result of the attainment of independence by African states in the early sixties, which left these states with the remnants of imperialism. African socialism is an outcry against the perceived injustices committed by white imperialists and therefore does not provide for white participation. The third variant, national socialism, by contrast to African socialism, is mainly pursued by white elitist groups ...

▼ A number of computerised tests have been especially developed to facilitate the medical management of the sports-related concussion. Probably the most widely used of these programmes is the ImPACT test that was developed in the USA and that is registered with the HPCSA for use in the South African context. A recent Afrikaans version of the test served as the basis of the present study with the following objectives: (i) to collect Afrikaans ImPACT normative data on a cohort of Afrikaans first language adolescent rugby players with Model C education for comparison with existing South African English first language adolescent rugby players with Private/Model C schooling, and (ii) to investigate the pre-versus postseason ImPACT neurocognitive test profiles of this cohort of Afrikaans first language adolescent rugby players versus equivalent noncontact sports controls. The results for Part 1 of the study generally demonstrate poorer performance in respect of the Afrikaans cohort, which is understood to be the result of poorer quality of education. The results for Part 2 demonstrated failure of the rugby group to benefit from practice on the ImPACT Visual Motor Speed composite score to the same extent as the control group. It is argued that this apparent cognitive vulnerability in the rugby group is due to lowered cognitive reserve capacity in association with long term exposure to concussive and sub-concussive injury.

An archaelogy of South Africanness: the conditions and fantasies of a post-apartheid festival.

▼ It has become commonplace in academic studies, particularly those with a critical bent, to view nations as being historical constructs, as being without essence, though not without effects of exclusion and inclusion, of the constitution of the „authentic‟ national
subject and the „other of the nation.‟ The critical impetus at work here is to show how a nation is constructed in order to bring into view the knowledge and power relations this construction entails, to show whose interests the construction serves, and whose it does not. This study examines the discursive production, the performative enactment and the spatial emplacement of post-apartheid „South Africanness‟ through a case study of Oppikoppi music festival. Oppikoppi is an annual event that emerged in 1994, on the threshold of the „new South Africa.‟ The festival is attended predominantly by young white Afrikaans-speaking South Africans and is held on a farm in the northernmost province of Limpopo, South Africa, an area notoriously conservative in its racial politics. Yet, curiously, Oppikoppi has been repeatedly referred to, and refers to itself with an almost obsessive regularity and repetitiveness, as a „truly South African‟ event. Indeed, the festival has been promoted, since 1998, as „The Home of South African Music,‟ and in 2009 the site of the festival was unofficially declared a „national monument.‟ Through the employment of concepts drawn from the writings of French philosopher and historian, Michel Foucault – particularly his earlier archaeological works – and from Sigmund Freud – particularly his metapsychological works – this study has posed two broad sets of questions. Firstly, from a Foucauldian perspective, what have been the conditions for the production of „South Africanness‟ at this festival? What have been the requirements, the discursive „rules of the game‟ for whiteness and Afrikanerness to become „South African‟? To what extent does this constitution of the festival as a „South African‟ event preserve older lines of division, difference and oppression? To what extent does this bring about meaningful social change? Secondly, from a psychoanalytic perspective, what are the fantasies constellated in the discourse of the festival as a „South African‟ event? Who, in these fantasies, is constituted as the „other of the post-apartheid nation‟? How has fantasy provided a kind of „hallucinatory gratification,‟ a phantasmatic compensation for, and a means of conserving, the losses of privilege in the new nation? And how has fantasy oriented the festival towards post-apartheid sociality, soliciting identifications with the post-apartheid nation? The overarching argument proposed is that anti-apartheid post-apartheid nation building has cultivated a melancholic loss of apartheid for whites in general and Afrikaners in particular, a loss that cannot be grieved – indeed, a loss that should not be grieved – and, as such, a grief that takes on an unconscious afterlife. Apartheid and the life it enabled – not only racialised privilege, but also a…

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to research the history of the
Afrikaner family group and then to document it chronologically. The history of the
Afrikaner-Oorlams started -during the disintegration period of the Khoikhoi in the West and Northwestern Cape and ended in South West Africa/Namibia, where the
Afrikaner-Oorlams settled as an independent Oorlams-Khoikhoi group.
First mention of the
Afrikaner family group was made in 1761.
At this time the disintegration of the Khoikhoi was already
in progress - a process which was conciderably aided by the
Company's policy of trade in livestock and also the smallpox
epidemic of the early eighteenth century.
The loss of their livestock presented the Khoikhoi with two
alternatives. They would either have to work on the farms of
white farmers or they would have to trek to such regions
which did not fall under colonial jurisdiction. At this
stage, the
Afrikaner-Oorlams grouped consisted of only a few
people and they had chosen the first option. They became
herdsmen on the farm of Petrus Pienaar, a white stockfarmer
in the Tulbagh district. Later on they moved to the Calvinia
district.
When Jager
Afrikaner, leader of the
Afrikaner-Oorlams before
the start of the nineteenth century, was born, this group was
an insignificant though independent Khoikhoi family group.
At this stage this group wiliness and their ability to use
fire arms and their competence as horsemen set them apart
from the ordinary Khoikhoi. Their close contact with the
white settlers was also reflected in the Company staff,
presented to Klaas
Afrikaner, father of Jager
Afrikaner by
the Company.
Because of their "oorlamsheid" they progressed from herdsmen to fellow hunters and 'Comrades of Pienaar in commando raids against Bushmen stock thieves. They were commended for their services by the magistrate and also the governor. They also realised that it was the Khoikhoi and Nama relatively easy to raid the stocks of groups who lived on the banks of the Orange river.
As their prowess and independence increased, the AfrikanerOorlams rebelled against the master view held by Pienaar.
The
Afrikaner-Oorlams subsequently murdered Pienaar and then fled to the Orange River region where they settled. These safe river hide-outs enabled them to conduct a reign of
terror and plunder against the indigenous groups living
their. Their skill as raiders and marksmen assured them an
unchallenged power base. Jager
Afrikaner was outlawed by
governor Charles Somerset in 1799.
Round about 1803 Jager
Afrikaner left his Orange River hideout and he and his followers settled a day's journey on
horseback north of the river at Blydeverwacht. At Jager
Afrikaner's request the first missionaries, the brothers
Albrecht joined the
Afrikaner-Oorlams. Jager
Afrikaner was
converted twelve years after the Albrecht brothers started
their missionary work amongst the
Afrikaner-Oorlams.
Due to the efforts of the missionary, Robert Moffat, Jager
Afrikaner persevered in his new faith. Jager
Afrikaner

▼ The study compares the biological performance of progenies of the Afrikaner x Western Sanga crossbred (small frame) and the Bonsmara (medium frame) cattle on the following traits: calving and growth rates as well as mortalities. The study was conducted in the Sourish Mixed Bushveld of the North West province. The objective was to identify a lowcare cattle breed, which can withstand unfavourable conditions under which most farmers in the North West Province operate. The results of this study indicated that, under good management, the Bonsmara cattle have higher growth rates compared to the Sanga cattle. There were statistical differences with regards to birth, pre-wean and wean masses, (P< 0.0001). Sanga cattle however were able to maintain higher calving rates under all varying conditions (Bonsmara 77% average and Sanga 84% average). The Sanga, due to its lower nutritional requirements, on average requires 15% less of the surface area required by the Bonsmara. Sanga cattle also returned better yields in terms of kilogram weaned calf per LSU and per hectare. With regard to herd mortalities, there was no significant difference (P = 0.03329).

The dissertation examines how Deon Opperman portrays and regenerates the revolt motif in his
Afrikaner dramas, in order to reflect the changing social environment. Chapter 1 provides an overview of revolt as lifestyle and as motif in Afrikaans drama. Chapter 2 offers a theoretical examination of The theatre of revolt (Brustein 1991), a discussion of concepts such as rewriting, multiculturalism, modern diaspora and
globalization, as well as a contextual study of Deon Opperman’s Afrikaans oeuvre. Chapter 3 (Donkerland) focuses on revolt within the postcolonial rewriting of
Afrikaner history. Chapter 4 (Kruispad and Ons vir jou) deals with social revolt within a multicultural milieu, whereas chapter 5 discusses Kaburu as a reflecting text and addresses the issue of the modern diaspora as a reaction to political transition. The
dissertation reaches the conclusion that Opperman is using South African theatre as a platform for revolt as well as for transformation.

▼ Triomf explores the distortion of the national
Afrikaner identity as a result of apartheid. This
dissertation aims to demonstrate how van Niekerk deconstructs the
Afrikaner through myths,
stories, symbols, intertextuality and Derridean deconstruction. The Benades represent the
Afrikaner on three levels: the personal, the national and the primordial. Since the Benades are
primordial, Van Niekerk is able to use the archetypes of Jung’s collective unconscious to
deconstruct the archetypal mythological structures
Afrikaner nationalists used to develop identity
and unity. The archetypes deconstructed are Spirit, the Great Mother, Re-birth, the Trickster, the
Physical Hearth and the Sacred Fire.
Afrikaner myths deconstructed include the Great Trek, the
family, the patriarch, the matriarch, the future of a white
Afrikaner nation and the binding
character of Afrikaans as white national language. Van Niekerk undermines the plaasroman of the
1920s and 1930s, as the Afrikaner’s national identity was constituted and deconstructed in literature.

▼ The end of the Second Boer War in 1902 gave rise to
cultural and political action of Afrikaners within the colonial
governments and among the South African people. These actions
caused a rise in
Afrikaner cultural and political nationalism.
Though the British emerged victorious from the war, resentment for
the British Empire was widespread in the South African colonies due
to brutalities suffered by the Afrikaners during the war. This
resentment would later be channeled by
Afrikaner leaders and used
as a political weapon. The British wished for appeasement with the
Afrikaners and established terms at the end of the war that
Afrikaner leaders were able to use to further
Afrikaner culture
through politics. The military victory for the British influenced
many Afrikaners to trade violence for political and cultural means
of resistance. Throughout the years 1902-1924 the
Afrikaner people
established strategies through politics, literary publications, and
new political groups, developed in the years 1904-1908, to advocate
for
Afrikaner nationalism and cultural equality amongst the British
in areas of law, commerce, and education. The war showed the
futility of military resistance against the British, but inspired
many to push for political and cultural resistance, unification,
and eventual dominance.
Afrikaner nationalist dominance in South
Africa began with the efforts of the
Afrikaner leaders and people
in 1902 after the Second Boer War.

▼ This thesis is a biographical study of Erika Theron (1907-1990), an
Afrikaner woman who played a significant role in many aspects of public life in South Africa in a critical time in the country‘s history. The study seeks to give recognition to her achievements, which have received scant attention in a historiography with a masculine bias. At the same time it examines her changing role from collaborator to critic of the apartheid system.
Certain defining features of Theron‘s life have been highlighted. First, Theron grew up in a staunchly
Afrikaner nationalist, service-oriented family which encouraged loyalty to her own people and civic responsibility. Second, she was unusual among
Afrikaner women of her generation, in that she was highly educated, independent and ready to assume leadership roles. She became a pioneer in a number of fields, attaining high professional rank and holding important public offices – frequently as the first woman to do so in the country.
The thesis focuses on five areas of Theron‘s public life. After returning from post-graduate studies abroad, she worked with Hendrik Verwoerd in the campaign to uplift poor whites, particularly the rehabilitation and re-integration of the
Afrikaner poor. She thereafter commenced a long career as a social work academic, which included a number of milestones for her new discipline, for the profession of social work and for the advancement of women in academia. From the 1950s she served on the town council of Stellenbosch, including terms as deputy mayor and mayor. She played an important role in historic conservation but was also instrumental in the rigorous institution of apartheid structures in the town during the early days of National Party rule. In the early 1970s she served as chairman of the Commission of Enquiry into Coloured Affairs which influenced her personal views on the country‘s race policies. She became a public critic of many aspects of the apartheid system and vocal advocate for coloured rights.

bekombaar is. Gevolglik is Die Boerevrou aan kultuurhistorici
betreklik onbekend.
of Die Boerevrou as ‘n gesaghebbende primêre bron vir
As
jong studieveld. ENGLISH: Die Boerevrou was the first, and until

Afrikaner het as
geskiedskrywing in SA. Onderwerpe soos, mobilisasie, voorrade,
Suid-Afrikaanse geskiedenis. Copyright

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The Afrikaans film industry came into existence in 1916, with the commercial release of De
Voortrekkers (Shaw), and, after 1948, flourished under the guardianship of the National Party.
South Africa’s democratic transition, however, seemed to announce the death of the
Afrikaans film. In 1998, the industry entered a nine-year slump during which not a single
Afrikaans film was released on the commercial circuit. Yet, in 2007, the industry was revived
and has been expanding rapidly ever since. This study is an attempt to explain the Afrikaans
film industry’s recent success and also to consider some of its consequences. To do this, I
situate the Afrikaans film industry within a larger – and equally flourishing – Afrikaans culture
industry. I argue that the Afrikaans language’s uncoupling from the state has shifted the
preservation and promotion of the language into market-driven domains. I show that
Afrikaans-language media and cultural commodities – like film – are mostly tailored to and
consumed by white Afrikaans-speakers. And I ask: if a “distinct” Afrikaner identity was first
forged within the cultural sphere, through cultural rituals and through the consumption of
Afrikaans media forms, what kind of subjectivities are, in the present moment, being
produced by the Afrikaans culture industry? Specifically, I consider the ways in which the
Afrikaans culture industry is reifying social life, how it is reaffirming the imagined boundaries
of Afrikanerdom, and how, through the consumption of its products, Afrikaners can imagine
– or re-imagine – themselves as members of the same collectivity or laager.
