▼ Previous studies have shown that the glaciers of southern Alaska are receding and thinning, and contributing significantly to sea-level rise, and that temperate glaciers are sensitive indicators of climate change. Therefore, a method is developed to apply feature tracking software to moderate resolution multispectral satellite imagery to derive velocity fields for outlet glaciers of the Harding Icefield, Alaska, which will serve as a basis for future studies of mass balance, contribution to sea-level rise, and glacier response to climate change. The data produced by a feature tracking program are systematically sorted by location, direction, magnitude, correlation strength, and error estimates to eliminate errant vectors using customized IDL programs. A successful new method of systematically removing anomalous vectors within a velocity field via a feedback loop is introduced and tested. Point data are spatially interpolated and a vector field is plotted and color-coded to display ice surface velocities on a glacier, then velocity profiles are produced to gauge the influence of topography on ice velocity and to determine the primary mechanism of ice flow. Velocity fields for Tustumena and McCarty Glaciers are derived that show speeds ranging from < 50-300 m/yr along their lengths. The velocity fields are accurate to within 5.05 ± 3.66 m/yr (0.15 ± 0.11 pixel) or less in magnitude and within 4.5° or less in direction. In-depth analysis of results produced with the image correlation software Image Correlation (IMCORR) show that the magnitude of offset produced changes with varying reference chip size, kernel size used in filters, and direction of the applied filter. A comparison of results produced by IMCORR and a second image correlation program, Coregistration of Optically Sensed Images and Correlation (COSI-Corr), reveals COSI-Corr's frequential correlator is preferable to IMCORR in terms of consistency of results, ease of use, speed of computations, and accuracy. Velocity fields produced using 15 meter Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) imagery from July 2003 and August 2005, and 30 meter Landsat-5 TM imagery from September 2006, August 2007, and July 2008 reveal that the correlation techniques are sensitive to the amount of surface ablation that has occurred during the time interval between image pairs. The results show that feature tracking is capable of producing accurate velocity fields for Harding Icefield's outlet glaciers across a one year time span using moderate resolution multispectral satellite imagery.

▼ Mangrove impoundments on the Indian River Lagoon, Florida, were constructed as a method for mosquito control. Artificial dikes were built up around the marsh areas to keep the mangroves continuously flooded as the black salt marsh mosquito, which is common in the area, will not oviposit in standing water. By 1959 over 3,240 ha of wetlands were impounded in the Indian River Lagoon (Rey et al., 2012). Continuous impounding is known to have negative effects on the health of mangrove vegetation. A simple change in water management: using a rotational impoundment management (RIM), was hypothesized to prevent the adverse consequences of continuous impounding, while at the same time allowing for noxious insect control. RIM involves the pumping of estuarine water into the impoundments to raise the water by 30 cm in spring and summer, the reproductive season of the black salt marsh mosquito. With this thesis I assessed the effects of the RIM strategy in an impounded mangrove in Florida, five years after the implementation of RIM. More specifically I examined whether there have been changes in the spatial distribution and state of the dominant black mangrove vegetation on the scale of the impoundment, before and after the implementation of RIM by making use of aerial photographs and high resolution satellite data. To follow distribution and extent of the mangrove vegetation I performed a land-cover classification with different classes of vegetation on color infrared aerial photographs from 2008 and 2010 and a Worldview-2 satellite image from 2014. In addition I created a map of leaf area index (LAI) by linear regression of vegetation indices and in situ collection of LAI to assess the current productivity of the vegetation on the scale of the mangrove impoundment. I found that an increase in mangrove vegetation took place after implementation of RIM in the mangrove impoundment and that the productivity of the vegetation measured by NDVI increased by 8% over the whole impoundment. The greatest shifts took place in areas without vegetation cover or with stunted mangrove vegetation, associated with hypersaline conditions. Productivity measured by NDVI in those regions increased on average by more than twofold. The succession towards denser classes of vegetation at the hypersaline interior indicated that re-establishment of mangrove vegetation took place. However, I found that current productivity over the whole impoundment, years after implementation of RIM, nonetheless remained lower than that of mangrove vegetation that was not impounded. ▼ Two introductory chapters have been used to give the necessary background to the main subject-matter of the thesis. The first of these chronologizes the significant steps in the development of aerial photographic interpretation from the first recorded aerial photograph to the present day respected position of the art in both military and civilian professional circles. The second introductory chapter deals with the fundamental principles involved in airphoto interpretation and of their specific application to soil engineering mapping for road projects in Southern Africa. This is followed by the major theme of the thesis, which concerns the direct location by aerial photographic interpretation of the various classes of material used in the construction of a modern day road. Although aerial photographs have been employed in recent years for direct interpretation and interpolation of certain specific road building materials, their use in this manner has been limited to a few special cases. This thesis sets out to show that under certain conditions, which pertain in many regions of the world, airphoto interpretation can be used for the direct location of 1materials possessing particular engineering characteristics. Further, it sets out to show, that this can be done for the full range of engineering properties required of materials for all the significant layers of construction, despite the fact that the materials involved may be of widely differing composition and geological origin. The actual interpretation is based on the fundamental recognition of the elements of form, tone, and texture making up the total photographic pattern. Similar features reflected on photographs are shown to be comprised of similar materials, not merely geologically speaking, but more especially in respect of their significant engineering characteristics; it is still further demonstrated that this is applicable even when such features are situated some considerable distance apart. Variations of notable engineering importance within one and the same geological occurrence, are also shown to be identifiable on the aerial photographs. For major road projects in areas subjected to certain environmental conditions, these possibilities form the basis of a new prospecting technique, which incorporates the full use of the science or art of interpretation. The basic concept governing the applicability of this technique and the steps necessary to ensure the development of the full potential of aerial photography in its application, are discussed and illustrated by detailed accounts of a number of specific projects. These projects incorporate both materials appraisals of wide strips of country for route location purposes and intensive prospecting along chosen routes. The techniques thus developed, constitute a new approach to materials investigations for major road projects and in this respect contribute to knowledge in this field. Finally, conclusions are drawn on the relative merits of materials investigation methods in current use in South West Africa…

▼ Aerial photography obtained by UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) is an emerging market for civil applications. Small UAVs are believed to close gaps in niche markets, such as acquiring airborne image data for remote sensing purposes. Small UAVs will be able to fly at low altitudes, in dangerous environments and over long periods of time. However, the small lightweight constructions of these UAVs lead to new problems, such as higher agility leading to more susceptibility to turbulence and limitations in space and payload for sensor systems. This research investigates the use of low-cost fisheye lenses to overcome such problems which theoretically makes the airborne imaging less sensitive to turbulence. The fisheye lens has the benet of a large observation area (large field of view) and doesn't add additional weight to the aircraft, like traditional mechanical stabilizing systems. This research presents the implementation of a fisheye lens for aerial photography and mapping purposes, including theoretical background of fisheye lenses. Based on the unique feature of the distortion being a function of the viewing angle, methods used to derive the fisheye lens distortion are presented. The lens distortion is used to rectify the fisheye images before these images can be used in aerial photography. A detailed investigation into the inner orientation of the camera and inertial sensor is given, as well as the registration of airborne collected images. It was found that the attitude estimation is critical towards accurate mapping using low quality sensors. A loosely coupled EKF filter applied to the GPS and inertial sensor data estimated the attitude to an accuracy of 3-5° (1-sigma) using low-cost sensors typically found in small UAVs. However, the use of image stitching techniques may improve the outcome. On the other hand, lens distortion caused by the fisheye lens can be addressed by rectification techniques and removed to a sub-pixel level. Results of the process present image sequences gathered from a piloted aircraft demonstrating the achieved performance and potential applications towards UAVs. Further, an unforeseen issue with a vibrating part in the lens lead to the need for vibration compensation. The vibration could be estimated to ±1 pixel in 75% of the cases by applying an extended Hough transform to the fisheye images.

▼ Historians have portrayed aviation in the First World War as a romantic alternative to the mass slaughter playing out on the ground and at sea. Young men volunteered for service in the air to escape the horrors of the trenches and their exploits made them into heroes a war-weary public could revere. As valuable as this diversion proved to civilian morale, it contributed little, if anything, to the military victory. Another global conflict broke out before aviation’s destructive power matured into a potential war winning force. This characterization has allowed historians to discuss World War I without any meaningful analysis of what role aviation played in the fighting. Connections between the air war and ground and naval operations are missing from most contemporary accounts of the war. This dissertation argues that airmen contributed greatly, shaping the manner in which armies and navies functioned in ways that influenced the outcome of battles and the length of the war. Reconnaissance, observation and photography made up the branch of World War I military and naval aeronautics that most significantly impacted the fighting. Observation balloons and airplanes regulated artillery fire, infantry liaison aircraft kept track of the advances made by attacking troops and the retreats of defenders, aerial photographers produced pictures that aided operational planners and provided the basis for perpetually updated maps, and naval airplanes, airships, and tethered balloons acted as aerial sentinels in a complex anti-submarine warfare organization that developed in the last half of the war. In the decade following the armistice, aviation leaders had to abandon the proven aerial reconnaissance model they developed during the war in favor of organizations that specialized in bombing and aerial combat. Achieving independence from the army and navy, as well as simple financial survival in an era of draconian military budget cuts, forced them to demonstrate that airmen possessed their own ability to destroy the enemy. Acting as auxiliaries to the other services would no longer suffice. Aviators had to substitute for soldiers and sailors, not merely service them. This atmosphere prompted air power advocates like William Mitchell, Hugh Trenchard, and Guilio Douhet to preach the future potential of bombing and to minimize the past accomplishments of reconnaissance. The record compiled by the Second World War’s bombing forces appeared to prove their arguments. This dissertation contends that in the aftermath of World War II historians examining aviation in the First World War joined their chorus. Instead of acknowledging the solid contributions made by aerial reconnaissance crews they have focused their analyses on the largely ineffectual record compiled by World War I bombing crews or the glamorous lives of the flying aces. ▼ Recent evidence suggests that backbarrier structure may act as an historical record of island development, and that backbarrier shorelines can be used as a proxy of an island’s past and future transgressive response to sea-level rise. The structure and stability of back-barrier shorelines are dependent on the geologic framework, defined here as the combination of nearshore topography, underlying geology, and modern geomorphologic forces. This antecedent framework controls and influences the present morphology, nearshore dynamics, and rates of transgression in response to sea-level rise while also acting as a feedback to the estuary ecology on the bayside. It is therefore surprising that our understanding of backbarrier geomorphology is limited. There is a need for an established link between process regimes and an island’s geomorphological history. This thesis bridges the current intellectual gap. The primary hypothesis of this project is that shorelines and bathymetric isolines share quantitative shape signatures indicative of their shared morphological past. To establish this link, the backbarrier shorelines of four United States National Seashores (Fire Island, NY; Assateague Island, MD; Santa Rosa Island, FL; and North Padre Island, TX) are digitized from aerial imagery using the marshline as the shoreline indicator to ensure the inclusion of (vital, sometimes inundated) ecosystems and sediment storage. The alongshore variation of this backbarrier shoreline, the mainland shoreline, lagoon bathymetry, and nearshore bathymetry are each quantified through wavelet analysis and their shape signatures are examined for spatial correspondence. Large and small scale variations are identified and attributed to the geomorphologic controls operating on the same scale and alongshore variation. The result is an improved understanding of how the geologic framework controls backbarrier shoreline shape, which is essentially an expression of the underlying geology. ▼ Remote sensing is the most practical way to acquire large amounts of land cover data for monitoring and understanding environmental change, so it is important to be able to map land cover from imagery. Maps defining land cover patches as polygons rather than pixels greatly improve processing efficiency in models and are often more relevant to the scale of biophysical processes. Defining boundaries around homogeneous patches of an image is called segmentation. Assigning a cover type label to a pixel or polygon is called classification. Accuracy of maps generated from images is generally specified in terms of classification accuracy with no specification of spatial distribution of error. We demonstrate need for spatial accuracy assessment by showing that even small classification error rates can cause large changes in a standard landscape statistic, average patch compaction (APC). Furthermore, the common practice of reducing classification error by forcing a minimum mapping unit size can increase error in APC. We also investigate the importance of segmentation evaluation functions as the basis for scientific decisions, comparing algorithms, and driving optimizers. We divide these functions into reference-based (scores are derived through comparison to a "correct" reference segmentation) and heuristic (scores are based on attributes of the image without knowledge of a reference). We quantitatively measure performance of several evaluation functions embedded in a region merging algorithm on ecological images where hand segmentations are available. We explain their poor performance by showing that deterministic, irreversible segmentation algorithms like region merging can only represent n of 2[superscript n] possible segmentations for an initial segmentation containing n boundaries, suggesting that evaluation functions must be learned. We demonstrate a reference-based evaluation function as a target for learning. It achieves near optimal performance inside a region merging algorithm, showing that poor evaluation functions, not greedy algorithms, limit performance in region merging. Finally, we describe a prototype segmentation editing tool we built to simplify generating hand segmentations. ▼ Invasive plants pose a serious threat to ecological, environmental and cultural values of infested regions and can be costly to control. Grass invasions are particularly concerning because they can alter wildfire regimes and change ecosystem function and structure at a global scale. Mapping, monitoring, and understanding invasive species ecology sufficiently to identify habitats prone to invasion are important for containment of the invasive plant. To this effect, remote sensing and spatial information science can be useful. In arid and semi-arid rangelands worldwide African perennial Buffel grass (Cenchrus ciliaris L.) has been introduced to improve pasture. However, it has become contentious because it can rapidly invade and transform non-target landscapes. Most research into Buffel grass relates to its agricultural uses, and little is known about the invasive ecology of the species. There is a need to consolidate existing knowledge, as well as map the current distribution, model potential distribution and improve efficiency in the detection of new infestations in remote landscapes. This research addresses these needs by developing and applying techniques from the spatial sciences to map and model Buffel grass distribution in remote, arid Australia. For controversial invasive species like Buffel grass, awareness about the ecological dangers of allowing spread to continue unchecked is important. Here, a new, comprehensive review is presented of the ecology, distribution and biodiversity impacts of Buffel grass when behaving as an invasive species. Importantly, this review also lays foundations for research into localised habitat requirements, setting the scene for all subsequent components of this research. The review reveals that temperature is a primary limitation to distribution at a global scale, soil texture may be a significant habitat parameter at localised scales and disturbance is required for seedling emergence. It is strongly suspected that Buffel grass fuelled fires are responsible for declining numbers of characteristic arid plants, the Saguaro Cactus (Arizona, USA) and the River Red Gum (Australia), and worldwide, arid landscapes stand out as requiring urgent control. The distribution of Buffel grass in invaded landscapes in arid southern Australia is not explicitly known. Over 3100 km of South Australian roads were surveyed to document current Buffel grass distribution in collaborative work with government. The grass was found to be wide ranging along major highways, but was mostly only sparsely distributed. Empirical modelling of species’ distribution helps identify local environments that may be prone to invasion, and is becoming an increasingly important step in effective management planning. Buffel grass roadside survey data were used in an exploratory regression analysis to identify environmental parameters of the species’ distribution across regional South Australia. ▼ Eelgrass (Zostera marina) is a critical nearshore marine habitat for juvenile Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) as they depart from their natal streams. Given the poor marine survival of Coho (O. kisutch) and Chinook (O. tshawytscha) salmon juveniles in recent decades, it is hypothesized that deteriorating eelgrass habitats could contribute to their low survival. The primary goal of this research was to investigate the possible long-term spatial-temporal trends in eelgrass habitat in the Salish Sea and was addressed by two main objectives: (1) Define a methodology for mapping eelgrass habitats using UAV imagery to create a baseline for long-term mapping; and (2) Assess changes in eelgrass area coverage and fragmentation over the period of 1932-2016 using historic aerial photographs and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) imagery, and assess the relationship between eelgrass and residential housing density and shoreline activities. Three study sites in the Southern Gulf Islands of the Salish Sea were chosen for analysis. The overall accuracies of eelgrass delineation from UAV imagery were 95.3%, 88.9%, and 90.1% for Village Bay, Horton Bay, and Lyall Harbour, respectively. The UAV method was found to be highly effective for this size of study site, however results were impacted by the environmental conditions at the time of acquisition, namely: sun angle, tidal height, cloud cover, water clarity, and wind speed. The results from the first objective were incorporated into a long-term dataset of historic aerial photography and used to evaluate changes in eelgrass area and fragmentation. All three eelgrass meadows showed a deteriorating trend in eelgrass condition. On average, eelgrass area coverage decreases by 41% while meadow complexity as indicated by the shape index increases by 76%. Shoreline activities (boats, docks, log booms, and shoreline armouring) and residential housing density increased markedly at all sites over the study period. By using a linear correlation model, it was revealed that eelgrass areal coverage and fragmentation (Shape Index) were, in general, very strongly correlated to these landscape-level coastal environmental indicators. While this correlation model is not meant to show a direct causative impact on eelgrass at these sites, these results suggest an overall deterioration of coastal environmental health in the Salish Sea due to a dramatic increase in the use of the coastal zone, as well as likely declines in water quality due to urbanization. ▼ A guiding principle in river science maintains that channel systems evolve to convey the sediment loads and water discharges imposed upon them. Changes in sediment and water inputs may result in adjustments to channel geometry, bed texture, and related parameters. Over the last century, geomorphic processes along the Middle Rio Grande and one of its major tributaries, the Rio Chama, NM, have been altered by intensified land and water management and climate change. Using a GIS, channel characteristics were digitized from georeferenced photographs and analyzed, with particular attention to quantifying measurement error. Along the Rio Grande, average channel widths decreased from 516±67m to 176±7m between 1918 and 1963, mostly due to decreasing peak flows and the implementation of flood control and other engineering measures. From 1985 to 2008, widths decreased from 176 ± 23 m to 146 ± 5 m, primarily over periods of low peak flow. The Rio Chama, downstream of El Vado Dam, narrowed from an average width of 58 m to 44 m, with most of the adjustment occurring after dam closure in 1935. vi Along both rivers, evidence suggested that the spatial patterns of planform change were partly controlled by tributaries confluences. To examine tributary controls along the Rio Chama, elevation and bed sediment data were collected at 200 cross sections situated up and downstream of 26 tributary confluences along a 17 km reach situated just upstream of Abiquiu Reservoir. Compared to reaches between junctions, confluences reduced gradients and bed sediment size upstream of confluences and increased them downstream. These shifts in gradient and bed texture appear to drive variations in sediment entrainment and transport capacity and the relative storage of sand along the channel bed, as well. Although the larger clasts downstream of junctions are harder to move and slow transport, the steeper slopes at these location likely help pass smaller gravel and sands delivered by the tributaries. However, channel form and process are highly variable along the study reach, reflecting variations in the sediment inputs related to watershed geology, mainstem morphology, and past depositional events. ▼ As the application of remote sensing within the agricultural community continues to increase, the amount of data and management information acquired from layered sensing approaches does as well. This information source provides producers the ability to make important management decisions in a timely fashion. Crop emergence and health are at the forefront of many of these management decisions early in the growing season. This study investigates the development and application of an image processing and classification algorithm (image processing tool) to accurately detect, asses, and quantify corn plant population rates at emergence from high resolution and high quality remote sensed imagery. Validation and testing of the image processing tool using ground-truthed stand count data was completed for six test plots (from three aerial images) acquired from a production corn field, to demonstrate the accuracy and robustness of the tool for real-world applications. The algorithm provided an average R2 value of 0.44 and RMSE value of 47.66% per row, over the six test plots when compared against ground-truthed data for identification of emerging corn plants, using 3.3 cm spatial resolution aerial images. But, after taking into account the physically undetectable corn plants in each section, resulting from the early growth stage and low image resolution, the average R2 value improved to 0.90 with an average RMSE of 21.18%. The algorithm also improved to an accuracy of 96% when a much higher quality aerial image with higher spatial resolution, 0.53 mm, was analyzed, indicating even better algorithm performance when the proper quality and spatial resolution to distinguish corn plants within an image is available.The classification model also created the first ever quantified spatial visualization of plant population, extracted from remote sensed imagery, via an emergence map. The emergence map covered the entire area of the subject image and allowed for a spatial representation of corn population estimates at emergence, up through the intra-row scale, to support early season crop management decisions. Model validation results and emergence map creation provided supporting evidence of the algorithm’s robustness and ability to detect, asses, and quantify corn plant population rates at emergence extracted from high quality and high resolution remote sensed imagery.
