▼ Youth unemployment is one of the most dominant socio-economic problems in Ethiopia. Particularly, urban
youth unemployment is higher in Addis Ababa. This study explored the nature of
youth unemployment attempting to examine the living conditions, experiences, challenges, efforts and opportunities of unemployed
youth living in kazanchis. A purposive sampling technique and a qualitative research design with a case study approach were used as a major study tools to identify respondents and share their experience. In-depth interview, observation and focus group disunion were used. Data was also collected from the families of unemployed
youth and the government representatives of the local administration. Thematic analyses using triangulation and cross case analysis were used to refine data. The findings indicate that unemployed
youth in kazanchis are facing more difficult challenges than just economic ones including social and psychological impacts. Unemployed
youth are subjected to lead subsistence or be it a dependent life. Aside from social isolation, depression, inferiority complex and low self-esteem are common among unemployed
youth. In spite of strong desire and effort to change, unemployed
youth seem to have a critical response towards government efforts in curbing the problem of
unemployment. Lack of transparency and inclusiveness, UN diversified area of engagement are among the major critics. However, the government remains adamant claiming the
youth are victims of modernization and need to up hail their working culture. Nevertheless, the issue of egalitarian treatment, improved school to work integration, better arranged technical trainings and social programs; stress coping and life skill trainings and strengthened localized efforts are the major social work implications of the study

▼ The purpose of this research is to explore the policies and practices associated with the social „problem‟ of
youth unemployment. A major focus of this research is a case study of the employment programme being utilised in Otorohanga to address this problem. This is an initiative consisting of 11 key projects to reduce
youth unemployment. The projects have consistently created a situation in Otorohanga where nobody under the age of 25 is registered with Work and Income New Zealand as unemployed. This outcome has been achieved by ensuring that local
youth are either in local training programmes, in employment or in apprenticeships. The research project uses both qualitative and quantitative research methods and provides a thematic analysis, from a labour studies perspective, of both literature and empirical findings from a range of interviews. In order to undertake this research, the thesis firstly provides a review of the literature on
youth,
unemployment, engagement and policies. Secondly, it highlights the employment policies utilised within New Zealand from the late 1990s through to 2011 and in order to examine the changes in political ideology between the Labour-led and National-led central government policies. Thirdly, the study incorporates interviews with a selection of key stakeholders involved in the successes of the Otorohanga projects.
The central arguments in this thesis are: 1) that
youth are a significant and poorly understood demographic; and that
youth unemployment is perceived to be a social problem due to the economic and social disadvantages for
youth which are exacerbated by structural inequalities; 2) that the current policies for dealing with
youth unemployment, especially the emphasis on education and the impact of neo-liberal ideologies only have limited success in dealing with the issue of
youth unemployment; 3) that no current policy understands or addresses the needs of
youth specifically, therefore the social problem of
youth unemployment will continue to be perpetuated; and, 4) that policies which draw on local, community driven solutions, grounded in labour market realities can be successful.
On this basis, the research provides good practice solutions which highlight the importance of incorporating community support, passionate leadership and employment-led training options in projects designed to address
youth unemployment. By identifying these good practice solutions the policy aspects that led to the success of the Otorohanga projects can be shared with other regional initiatives in New Zealand. Should this occur, the thesis aims of contributing towards reducing
youth unemployment in New Zealand can be achieved and have the potential to reduce
youth unemployment in other centres.

▼ This study investigated the psychological effects of
youth unemployment in Ghana and the buffering role of religiosity and social support. Youths within the ages of 18 and 35 years in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana constituted the research population. A sample of 362 youths were purposively selected for the study. They comprised both the employed (n=172) and the unemployed (n=190). The employed youths served as a control group for comparative analyses. The cross-sectional survey research design was adopted. Standardized measures were used to assess psychological health in terms of depression, cognitive distortions, self-esteem, and suicidality. The Pearson r test, the Linear Regression test, and the Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) test were used to analyze the data. The findings showed poorer psychological health among unemployed youths than employed youths. Duration of
unemployment significantly predicted poorer psychological health among the youths. Religiosity moderated the psychological effects of
youth unemployment except for depression. However, social support predicted but did not moderate the psychological effects of
youth unemployment. The findings and their implications are discussed with references to the existing literature and theories.

▼ Youth today are constantly faced with enormous challenges and are continually faced with job uncertainty and scarce opportunities with almost no means to personal growth. Faced with bleak future livelihood prospects,
youth make up a large number of the world’s working poor. Inadequate
youth education and lack of labour market preparation still pose challenges for South African
youth. They face sizeable constraints to entrepreneurship such as a lack of entrepreneurship culture; lack of entrepreneurship knowledge through formal and informal education; relevant business development services, unsatisfactory business support and insufficient access to financing. Despite this, the extent of research on
youth entrepreneurship in Africa is deficient, even non-existent in some contexts. In response to the alarming rate of
youth unemployment, the South African government had embarked on realising some of the aspects of the National
Youth Policy through
youth empowerment via a number of interventions. The implementing agency of all
youth development policies and interventions is the National
Youth Development Agency (NYDA). The agency has rolled out a number of interventions to address various issues pertinent to the state of the
youth in South Africa. However, the specific interventions this study addresses are those related to entrepreneurship, specifically the NYDA Grant programme. Under the Grant programme, a number of issues are addressed such as provision of physical capital, access to resources in the form of advice, guidance and mentorship made available by the National
Youth Development Agency to the unemployed
youth in the Western Cape. While many
youth development programmes have been rolled out both around the world and in South Africa, very little monitoring and evaluation has been conducted in identifying which programmes are effective and sustainable in the long run. At the time of this research, limited information had been accessible with respect to the benefits of entrepreneurship development programmes in South Africa. This research is significant in the sense that it bridges the gaps in the literature on
youth entrepreneurship interventions and practical interventions in the field. Furthermore, it provides a lens with which to determine whether they are indeed a sustainable way forward for unemployed
youth. Therefore this study conducted a process evaluation using qualitative research methods in order to ascertain if the NYDA is efficiently and effectively executing its mandate with respect to the Grant programme. The research objectives of this study were 1) to conduct a process evaluation of the National
Youth Development Agency’s Grant programme, 2) to develop a theoretical and legislative framework underpinning
youth in South Africa, 3) to describe and analyse the NYDA’s Grant programme, 4) to highlight the opportunities and challenges that affect the current implementation of the Grant programme and 5) to present recommendations. The findings suggest that the Grant programme has been relevant, timely…

▼ The aim of our study was to investigate how young people’s situation in society is affected by unemployment and to explore whether young people are affected psychologically by being unemployed, and if so, how. To investigate this, we used quantitative methodology and conducted a survey of 50 young people in two different employment agencies. The results showed that adolescents are partially a part of the precariat social class and that a large portion of the surveyed young people are psychologically affected by being unemployed in a negative way.

▼ Youth employment is one of the most pressing social issues in the Australian economy. Youth generally have greater employment difficulties than other groups in the labour market. This is particularly striking in regional Australia. The focus of this thesis is the Illawarra region of New South Wales, Australia which has experienced one of the most disadvantaged labour markets for youth over the last few decades. There have been a number of important factors that have impacted on youth employment. One of the most significant has been neoliberalism, an ideology and practice that has become ubiquitous in the developed West. The theory of hegemony developed by Antonio Gramsci is used to understand how neoliberalism operates. Hegemony can be applied to both theory and ideology, and policy and structures. The thesis argues that neoliberalism can be seen as hegemonic, and contends that it can be seen as operating successfully in its own terms in the Australian context.
This thesis specifies the nature of the local youth labour market in the Illawarra’s regional economy. The thesis poses a central research question to understand these dimensions: What are the challenges to youth employment in a neoliberal economy that operates successfully in its own terms? In order to explore this question a qualitative methodology is used that draws on youth employment experiences to understand, more specifically, how neoliberalism has impacted on youth. The findings indicate how significant neoliberal ideologies and practices impact on youth employment experiences, and youth understandings of them. In particular, the study demonstrates how precarious employment shapes the experiences and expectations of youth, contributing to new understandings of youth employment in regional Australia.

▼ This creative writing thesis consists of a full-length novel, Stay Hungry, Stay Choosy. The premise of the novel is that, by 2050, Italy will be a de jure gerontocracy that cannibalises its young. This thesis contributes to research on moral panics as it brings to the fore the voices of the voiceless and further explores the locus of youth unemployment in the discussion on social deviance. Thus, the thesis explores how Erich Goode and Nachman Ben-Yehuda's (1994) moral panics theory explains the mono-narrative of young people's transition from education to employment in Italy and the United Kingdom. In my academic research, I use a critical paradigm based on the fundamental premise that creative writing should play a key role in the liminal place that bridges social research and social activism. The research is framed by a number of social theories, underpinning the public discourse on youth overeducation, unemployment and underemployment. Subsequently, an in-depth analsyis is carried out, using the lens of Goode and Ben-Yehuda's moral panics framework, in order to show how the pervasive dichotomy of the angry youth and the aboulic youth in public discourse is used to stereotype the young and to maintain the power dynamics between both generations and socio-economic classes. Thirdly, Urbanski's 'rhetorical circle' (1975) is shown to be the explanatory metaphor that allows speculative fiction writers, such as Anthony Burgess and Marco Bosonetto, to draw upon pervasive social fears about the young, creatively elaborate upon them and hold up a mirror to readers by incorporating these fears into storytelling. These theoretical concepts are then explored from the perspective of young people, through ethnographic inquiry. Finally, the research outcomes are filtered through the process of self-reflexivity in order to illustrate the choices I had to make in order to complete the present novel in a way that respects both the conventions of the speculative writing genre and draws upon research findings. This thesis thus contributes to the case that creative writing has a key role to play in linking social science findings to practice by drawing concepts and findings together in a coherent narrative. This thesis turns this literary call to action into a real-life manifesto.

Youth wage subsidy as a possible solution to youth unemployment in South Africa

▼ South Africa is characterised by its high and persistent level of
unemployment, in particular
among the
youth. The high
youth unemployment is attributed to various reasons, ranging
from their lack of work experience, skills mismatch to employment and wage rigidities. The
South African government proposed the
youth wage subsidy to be implemented in 2011, with
the primary aim of solving the
youth unemployment problem. This study starts by providing a
literature review on the
youth labour market trends since the transition; it emerged that there
is a lack of studies focusing exclusively on how youths fare in the labour market. Next, the
demographic and educational attainment characteristics of the
youth narrow labour force,
employed and narrow unemployed are analysed under the narrow or strict definition, using
the 1995-1999 October Household Surveys (OHSs), the 2000-2007 Labour Force Surveys
(LFSs) and the 2008-2011 Quarterly Labour Force Surveys (QLFSs). With regard to
unemployed youths, it is found that they are more likely to be blacks, without Matric and have
never worked before. The main causes of
youth unemployment are then discussed in detail,
before the thesis moves on to examine the various active and passive labour market policies
that could help to address the
youth unemployment problem. The possible pros and cons of
the
youth wage subsidy, one of the active policies and the focus of this study, are discussed in
greater detail. In particular, the claim by institutions such as COSATU that the introduction of
the subsidy would lead to elderly workers (who are not subsidised) being replaced by the
youth workers (who are subsidised) is not entirely correct, as these two groups of workers
could be complementary instead of substitutes, and the introduction of the subsidy
programme could result in an increase of demand for both elderly and
youth workers. It is
concluded that, although the
youth wage subsidy could be one of the feasible solutions to
stimulate demand for
youth labour, it is not sufficient to address
youth unemployment. It
needs to be complemented by the other policies, such as a job search subsidy (targeting
discouraged work seekers) and public employment programmes (e.g. Expanded Public Works
Programme); but it is most important to note that these policies could only be fully effective if
the root causes of
youth unemployment are addressed by the government.

▼ Economists have stated that unemployment has a lasting negative effect, particularly on young people. The present research examined the experiences of young people Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET) in Scotland and the impact being NEET has on their identities. Specifically focussing on how these young people gain recognition and construct a positive sense of self.
Three research questions are addressed: (1) how do young people give and receive recognition in their peer group? (2) How do young people engage with the alternative context of an online social networking site in order to give and receive recognition? (3) Are there any disagreements and/or misunderstandings between young people and employers? These questions are examined using three data sets: 16 peer group discussions with a total of 79 young people, 37 Bebo (a social networking site) profiles and questionnaires completed by 33 young people and 29 employers.
Analysis of peer group discussions revealed the ways in which young people give and receive recognition and the recognition they feel they are given and denied from others. This highlights the complex transition into work for these young people and their struggle for recognition. For example, trying to balance avoiding ridicule from peers associated with certain jobs with their desire to find a job which will allow them to buy certain things and participate in adult life. Analysis of Bebo profiles revealed that young people make use of the existing structures of recognition within Bebo but also manipulate the site in order to gain further recognition in ways that could not have been predicted. Bebo offers young people the chance to gain recognition for popularity, sexual attractiveness and physical strength in ways which may not be deemed acceptable in everyday offline life. A comparison of the perspectives of young people and employers revealed a number of misunderstandings which hinder their relationship, for example the importance of qualifications. Analysis across these three data sets, and the social contexts they represent, reveals the tensions young people experience as they move between different structures of recognition.
The main theoretical contribution of this research is a model of recognition in which the self is caught between different structures of recognition. This model provides an insight into what motivates young people to behave differently in different contexts, based on the perceived and actual recognition available. For example, online social networking provides a space for young people to receive recognition for how much alcohol they can drink, however this is not something they would draw attention to in a work environment.
There are two applied contributions: (1) at a practical level, young people would benefit from more work experience placements and positive engagements with employers. (2) Most importantly, alternative structures of recognition are needed which recognise the knowledge and skills that young people do have. Instead of focusing on…

▼ The purpose of this study was to assess the role of MSE in reducing
youth unemployment, the case of
Meserak TVET college graduates of the last three years (2010-2012) in A. A City Administration.
The major sources of data for the study were 214 graduates, 80 trainers, 1 Dean, 2 entrepreneurial
course instructors, and MSE development head office. The approach used in this research was a
mixed approach which makes the use of both quantitative and qualitative description. To this end,
questionnaire and interview data collection tools were employed. Stratified and Systematic random
sampling techniques were used to select respondents of questionnaires. Thus, the collected data
were tabulated, presented and analyzed by using frequency and percentage distributions. The results
of the study generally revealed that out of the sampled 214 graduates, 73 (34.1%) were unemployed,
88 (41.1%) were employed, while the remaining 53 (24.8%) were self-employed. As the study
revealed, factors causing youth’
unemployment were: Negative social and cultural attitude towards
self-employment, lack of access to start up finance, lack of business assistance and support,
mismatch between jobs available and larger number of new graduates, low economic capacity of the
country to absorb the graduates, lack of guidance and counseling service, unfavorable conditions
from MSE facilitators, weak tie among TVET, Micro Finance Institutions and MSE development
head office were indicated as the major problems. On the other hand, it was identified that the major
constraints that prevented the graduates from creating their own business were: lack of financial
and material resources, lack of work site, unfavorable condition from MSE facilitators, and negative
attitude towards wage employment. Based on the major findings, it could be concluded that the
employment rate of Meserak TVET college graduates is more than the unemployed. Furthermore,
based on the major findings and conclusions, the following recommendations were made: providing
financial support schemes for graduates to encourage self-employment by strengthening the
relationship between TVET institution, MSE sector, and Micro Finance Institution; recognizing
MSE development as the top strategy in reducing
youth unemployment; improving career guidance
as a necessary mechanism for helping students to select a marketable field of stud; creating easily
accessible credit, and loan services; and tracing of graduates.

▼ Monitoring and evaluation has in recent years been embraced by the South African government as a key feature of public service delivery. This has been used to promote efficiency in service delivery, good governance, to promote transparency in expenditure and promote financial accountability, so that set objectives can be achieved objectives. However, implementing Monitoring and Evaluation has also been challenging as a result of poor policy design, poor policy implementation, the lack of accountability and the lack of exemplary systems. The issue of service delivery efficiency remains paramount in South Africa, due to the increasing inequality gap, high levels of
unemployment, service delivery protests and rising poverty. Assessing policy outcomes and impact is a weak point and major gap in policy evaluation in South Africa. This is reflected in the manner in which duplicate policies are continuously being created instead of making existing ones work, or improving upon them. More efforts should be invested into policy monitoring and evaluation instead of policy development. The study will investigate the above assertion by investigating monitoring and evaluation policy and practice in the National
Youth Development Agency. The structure of this framework will be examined against the Government-wide Monitoring and Evaluation framework established by the South African government. The research will also examine monitoring and evaluation practice as carried out by the United Nations and the World Bank as they have a long history of practice. This investigation will look at activities, inputs, outputs, implementation constraints, outcome and impact assessment; it will also discuss monitoring report and policy/programme evaluation. The study will adopt a descriptive case study investigation by drawing on the viewpoints expressed by various scholars. It will also highlight policies which support and enable the practice of M & E in South Africa. This research is noteworthy in the sense that it bridges the gaps between Monitoring and Evaluation literature and Monitoring and Evaluation practice in an institution. Furthermore, it explores the complexities of Monitoring and Evaluation implementation in a department running various programmes.

▼ This study highlights the need for a youth entrepreneurship education program of value in South African secondary schools. It examines the enterprising tendencies of grade 12 learners in 10 secondary schools in the Lejweleputswa District of the Free State province, South Africa, using the General Enterprising Tendency (GET) test.
An investigation into the current status of entrepreneurship in South Africa revealed that there is a lack of entrepreneurs and not enough people who have the orientation and skills to create new businesses. This leads to a situation where the South African economy performs poorly and the recent financial crisis exuberated South Africa’s challenges in terms of poverty, unemployment and income inequality. In addition, youth unemployment has worsened as a result of the recession, because the youth lack the needed qualifications, experience and skills to compete for the few job opportunities in the labour market. Entrepreneurship and innovation are widely seen as key sources of renewed economic growth, creating jobs and advancing human welfare.
This study shows that the South African youth has a positive enterprising tendency. The ‘General Enterprising Tendency Questionnaire’, completed by 530 grade 12 learners was evaluated and learners scored within the average score, although at the lower end of the suggested average. When the questionnaire’s constructs are evaluated, learners scored below the suggested average score on ‘need for achievement’, ‘need for autonomy’, ‘creative tendency’ and ‘moderate/calculated risks’, but above the suggested average for ‘drive and determination’, but it can be conclude that learners shows a tendency to be entrepreneurial.
However, the study suggests that grade 12 learners in the Lejweleputswa sample have overrated expectations on the ‘drive and determination construct’. It appears that they do not have the propensity to be creative and have a low drive to be autonomous. The study also reveals that there are no practical significant differences between the mean values for the demographic variables school, age, gender, home language and ethnic group regarding the measured constructs.
Major shortfalls in the current education system are highlighted, including teachers with no previous knowledge of commercial subjects that are forced to teach entrepreneurship, most schools do not implement Economic and Management Science (EMS) as learning area and as from 2013, EMS will only be introduced to the curriculum in the Senior phase (grade 7 to 9). In addition, learners are not motivated to be creators of jobs, but to rather seek employment.
The study concludes that public schools in South Africa do not have the capacity to implement a successful program of youth entrepreneurship education. The involvement of Government, Department of Education, schools, teachers, parents, learners, entrepreneurs and organised business is needed to promote youth entrepreneurship in South Africa. The study expands on recommendations and presents a national strategy to enhance youth…

▼ This thesis explores variations in employment outcomes among
youth living under similar structural conditions of poverty and
unemployment in ghetto neighbourhoods. It challenges structuralist accounts that ignore the role of personal agency and hold that structures alone determine action. The critical realist framework offers a helpful understanding of social structures as both material and cultural since human agency, or action, is influenced by circumstances that are both materially objective and culturally subjective. By probing the interaction of agency and structure this research shows that individual agency is a response to cultural beliefs and competing cultural norms. The ensuing worldview informs decisions and actions of
youth which, under different cultures and material family structures, either reproduce or transform their educational and employment prospects in ghetto neighbourhoods. Ten case studies are analysed from
youth in Manenberg, Cape Town, a neighbourhood that was historically segregated through the apartheid system of forced removals and resettlement. In-depth interviews provide evidence from life histories, experiences of education institutions and of looking for work. Further information is gathered from interviews with secondary participants, apart from participant observation in family and community activities through an ethnographic approach. Findings reveal that the culture of disengaged parenting leaves
youth exposed only to the influence of low education and employment expectations such that they despondently relinquish career aspirations by dropping out of school, remaining unemployed and underemployed as a result. By contrast, consistent mentoring from parents entails a culture that competes with the negative influence of gangs and enables resilience among
youth to pursue tertiary education.
Youth thereby transform, rather than reproduce, their position in the labour market as unemployed or underemployed unskilled manual workers. Similarly, social networks beyond the neighbourhood provide
youth with job information, supportive resources, and cultural capital, which enable them to conceptualise ideas of professional careers. This transforms the historical and contemporary material structure of ghetto neighbourhoods with socially isolated networks that limit
youth to low-skilled employment opportunities. Such networks do not support personal agency towards alternative employment and
youth resort to cultural practices of gangsterism, irregular and informal work.

▼ This study took place in Bishop Lavis, a small community in Cape Town on the Cape Flats, Republic of South Africa. Stratified random sampling was used to select ten unemployed youths that resided in the area. The problem that prompted this investigation and that needed to be addressed was the high
unemployment rate amongst the
youth and how their aspirations and capabilities contribute to their state of well-being. This community is subjected to extreme poverty, inequality and gangsterism. This places a heavy burden on their ability to escape deprivation and the harsh realities of not ever being able to find a job. These inferior conditions in the community impact heavily on their quality of life. As the youths develop into maturity, their inability to enter the labour market deprives them of aligning their dreams, capabilities and aspirations to the new demands of the labour market. The study is based on the Capability Approach and it is used as an evaluative tool to assess the aspirations and capabilities of the participants. The objective of the study was to bring us closer to understanding how aspirations are developed and whether such aspirations can assist the youths in transforming their capabilities into a functioning. What we learned from this study was that the aspirations of youths failed to develop from an early age and their responsiveness to opportunities has to do with their value system and adaptation to their environment. This qualitative study required consent from the participants and ethical approval from UWC research structures. Through semi-structured interviews, information about the participants’ capabilities and aspirations were recorded and analysed. Based on this analysis and evaluation, new assessment model and assessment tools are proposed as an intervention strategy for policymakers.

Työttömyydellä on tutkimuksissa osoitettu olevan selvä negatiivinen vaikutus nuorten hyvinvointiin.

The objective was to explore young people's experience of unemployment and health. It was made by using a mixed approach. Data was collected by a survey which included quantitative and qualitative questions. It was answered by 41 unemployed young people aged 17-24 years. The results from the survey showed that a greater number of young people have good health, and that it was common with a mental well-being. Half of the participants felt stressed. A larger proportion of women had suicidal thoughts compared to men. It was only women who had attempted suicide. Unemployed young people experienced unemployment as negative, although they had a positive view on the future. Many responds perceived good opportunities to further education, but the likelihoods of getting a work was perceived by the majority as good or neither good or bad. The majority of young people are trying to be active during their unemployment. They experience unemployment as a meaningless time when theirs health status doesn’t improves, rather get worse. Several have to make an effort to feel good and not to be depressed. The conclusion is that research on youth unemployment is particularly important because previous research shows that young people and their health, affects more than unemployed adults.

▼ In the modern world, countries seek to maintain very low levels of unemployment and look to this measure as a way of assessing their economies' health. With a few others, unemployment rates are the most important indicators of a country's economic condition and can substantially affect the lives both of individuals and the country as a whole. Thus, it is crucial to understand what, if any, rigidities imposed on the market may affect employment negatively and strive to find alternatives that do not raise unemployment. The following study is focused particularly on youth unemployment (unemployment of individuals between 15 and 24 years old) to determine whether the general consensus about market rigidities and their effects on unemployment in the general population can also be used to explain unemployment of the youth. Regression analysis was used on data for 18 OECD (Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development) countries, testing five different market rigidities. The results showed that only two market rigidities had any significant effect on youth unemployment; only one was significant in the direction of the general consensus with the literature. This somewhat surprising result may mean that governments will have to reassess their approach when trying to lower unemployment. ( en )

▼ The Republic of South Africa is faced with an extremely problematic high rate of poverty, shortages of skills and
youth unemployment. This phenomenon is amongst blacks (predominantly African and coloured). This thesis therefore, argues that job creation is a very important measure to address
youth unemployment and related socio-economic problems though; the majority of
youth in South Africa have been classified as unskilled, uneducated and unemployable. The implementation of skills development programmes remains a huge problem. It has been also assumed that
youth development programme have been inaccurately interpreted. TheYouth development is an evolutionary development in which all young people are engaged in attempting to build skills, and competencies, to meet their social needs and for the development of the community (Pittman 1993: 3). It is in this regard that the researcher selected Belhar in the Western Cape as a setting to investigate the problematic mentioned above. Although the 2011 census report stated that people living in the area of Belhar have access to electricity, refuse removal, water and sanitation, up to now poverty and
youth unemployment remain alarming in this community. The study indicates that there is a
youth development policy existing on paper at all levels of South African governments however its implementation remains a major problem. The research is exploratory in nature and uses qualitative techniques of inquiry. The researcher also uses secondary data such as conference papers and the City of Cape Town’s budget documents as a form of gathering information for analysis. The study explores the present
youth programme and local government’s capacity in the surrounding community of Belhar. The data collected during this study through interviews, reveals that the
youth programme is in existence in Belhar, however there is incapacity and lack of cooperation between the councilors, Belhar
youth leaders and the City of Cape Town’s Municipality. The study further reveals that since ever the
youth programme started in December 2013 under the leadership of the Belhar councilors, there were only two beneficiaries from the “youth” of that entire community who got employment after attendance for skills training. The finding further indicates that the programme mostly did not achieve its goals.

▼ The original contribution of this study to knowledge is the re-contextualisation of the
SCALERS model to investigate the organisational capabilities of Nigerian nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) to replicate successful programmes designed to
empower poor youths as NGOs are among the key stakeholders in the fight against
youth poverty in Nigeria.
Youth poverty is on the rise in Nigeria despite the successful
poverty alleviation programmes of NGOs being utilised in some locations within
Nigeria. This has necessitated the current investigative study to unravel the near lack of
replication by these NGOs in other needy locations in Nigeria to reduce the growing
scourge of
youth poverty in the country. The research questions comprise two main
categories focusing questions on the effectiveness of the organisational capabilities of
these NGOs and determining the progress made in replicating successful programmes
designed to empower poor youths in Nigeria and investigating the correlation between
these.
The study addressed a gap in extant literature and focused on
youth poverty alleviation
activities of NGOs and their organisational capabilities in Nigeria by investigating these
organisational capabilities issues in relation to replicating successful programmes
designed to empower poor youths to address the growing problem of
youth poverty in
Nigeria using the SCALERS model as theoretical foundation for the study.
The study utilised a quantitative-based non-experimental exploratory correlational study
design to investigate the organisational capabilities of
youth-serving NGOs to replicate
successful programmes designed to empower poor youths. A simple random sampling
technique was adopted to gain access to the NGOs, and a self-administered
questionnaire was utilised to gather the research data from managers of the NGOs.
Descriptive and inferential statistics were carried out and their findings were significant.
The major findings of the study were that the investigated NGOs had been able to meet
their staffing, communication, alliance-building, replication and stimulating market
forces needs effectively and that there was a significant correlation between the
organisational capabilities of the investigated NGOs and replicating successful
programmes designed to empower poor youths. It is expected that the research findings
will enable
youth-serving NGOs and their stakeholders to tackle
youth poverty
effectively

▼ The objective of this study was to investigate some socio-demographic aspects and implications of
youth unemployment in Galeshewe Township. The study makes use of descriptive statistics to analyze and interpret data collected from a random survey of 947 young persons aged between 18 and 35 years old. An individual questionnaire was administered during the interviews. The results indicate that most unemployed youths are between the ages of twenty-five and twenty-nine years and the majority of them are females. About 58.5% of the unemployed youths have completed secondary education, with 8.9% of them having obtained a tertiary diploma or degree. The majority of the
youth do not have previous work experience and this handicaps their ability to secure employment. Most of these young people originate from areas outside Galeshewe. The views collected from the unemployed
youth point to the need for government to ensure that tertiary education is accessible in the city in order to improve the level of education of the
youth. The government also needs to provide more targeted job creation schemes, especially to those who did well at matriculation level, and to also empower the
youth through other skills acquisitions as well as training and programmes that are available.

▼ The purpose of the thesis is to analyse the function fulfilled by the Youth Opportunities Programme (1978-1983) in its wider political, economic and historical context. There are three main sections to the work. The first establishes the context from which the Youth Opportunities Programme (YOP) emerged. This includes: an analysis of the origins and early development of the Manpower Services Commission (MSC); an historical account of government policy and special measures for the relief of unemployment; and a description of the circumstances and manner in which these elements came together in the development of the MSC's special measures policy, leading to the launch of YOP in April 1978. It is concluded that the initial role of the programme was essentially that of a palliative in the context of the Labour Government's social contract relationship with the trade union movement rather than being a positive element in the MSC's development of a comprehensive manpower policy. The second section is concerned with the actual development and performance of the programme in relation to its original objectives. This includes national level analyses in terms of both quantitative and qualitative objectives, and the conclusions of a case study conducted in the Portsmouth Travel-to-Work Area. The third section examines the significance of the divergences revealed between objectives and results, both in the context of contemporary political and economic developments, and also in a wider historical context which includes the initial progress made by YOP's successor, the Youth Training Scheme (YTS). It is concluded that, although YOP continued to act as a palliative, it developed beyond this towards a new form of active manpower policy consistent with a monetarist macro-economic context. On the basis of this analysis, alternative scenarios for the future are briefly considered.

▼ Economic Problems in Saudi Arabia: a Study on
Determinants of Economic Growth and
Youth Unemployment. The current
thesis analyzes the economic problems in Saudi Arabia with a
special focus on economic growth and
youth unemployment. The
economic growth of Saudi Arabia is measured in terms of Gross
Domestic Products (GDP) and Per Capita Gross Domestic Product
(PCGDP), which are considered as two dependent variables in the
research. Additionally, various economic factors such as Gross
Capital Formation (GCF), Labor Force (LF), Human Component (HC),
Oil price, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) are used as independent
variables for identifying the reasons behind slow economic growth
in Saudi Arabia. The research also includes a discussion on
proposed models, choosing one under the basis of regression
analysis. The current research indicates that the GDP of Saudi
Arabia depends significantly on the rate of
youth unemployment and
the FDI. Therefore, it is evident that the economic issues in Saudi
Arabia can be mitigated by reducing the rate of
unemployment and
increasing the FDI.

▼ This paper aims to assess the relative productivity of contacting friends/relatives versus using a formal job-search method for the unemployed youth. Moreover, we examine how it varies across individuals with different education levels, and over the business cycle. Finally, we also analyse whether the higher usage of job networks that was observed during and after the Great Recession generated strong enough congestion effects that hampered their relative productivity. Our results suggest that using job connections instead of formal methods increases the reemployment hazard of young unemployed jobseekers. In addition, this effect does not seem to differ by education level except during the Great Recession, when the low educated had a higher reemployment hazard than the highly-educated. For the low educated unemployed youth, the economic cycle does not seem to affect the effectiveness of using friends and relatives. This contrasts with the decrease in its relative productivity that their highly-educated counterparts seem to have experienced during the Great Recession. Finally, and contrary to what the theoretical literature suggests, we did not find evidence of strong congestion effects; perhaps because the usage of social networks was below its point of saturation.

▼ This thesis is concerned with the experiences of an under-researched group of long-term unemployed young adults aged 18 – 24 years old. The research was undertaken in the South West of England between July 2010 and January 2013; a period of economic uncertainty and social instability in the UK. The initial sample comprised nineteen young adults, chosen to represent the diversity of those who were unemployed at that time. The longitudinal approach allowed for an exploration of their changing attitudes and self-understandings over a two year period. Whilst the interviewees shared much in common with their younger counterparts whose experiences have been the focus of previous research, there were also some significant differences. Not only did their priorities differ as they approached their mid-twenties, but they also held the capacity to project themselves further into the future; contemplating what life might be like in five years’ time. The findings revealed a tension between culturally embedded ideas that continue to support the primacy of paid work, and the ways in which some of the young adults were able to (re)define their lives. The importance of experiences outside of paid employment emerged as significant, suggesting the need for a broader understanding of what constitutes ‘work’. Whilst some of the young adults seemed to have adopted late-modern perspectives, engaged in a form of reflexive life management, others appeared to be struggling to reconcile the opportunities available with their expectations. In part, some of the differences between the participants were linked to gendered subjectivities; with the young men finding it more challenging to make sense of their lives beyond the world of paid work. However, the young adults’ experiences could not be divided by gender alone, nor could gender be disembedded from the broader context of their lives: their family backgrounds; their historical contexts; their educations; the discourses that influence their lives; their location. These structural factors were continuously at play in the lives of the participants, but did not preclude the possibility of them exercising their agentic abilities. When considering the findings as a whole it was the young adults’ ability to experience a sense of agency, combined with a feeling of belonging, which emerged as significant.

▼ Economics
This dissertation consists of three chapters investigating labor market trends, specifically of young workers (ages 18-24). In the United States, young workers decreased their labor market participation by more than 8% from 1994-2014 and the first chapter of this research considers changing demographics and educational decisions to account for this decline. Using connected monthly Current Population Survey (CPS) data, an alternative definition of labor market attachment is considered, which accounts for attached, marginally attached, and not attached workers. Additionally, attending college is considered as a weak form of labor market participation. Accounting for demographic changes and varying levels of attachment by demographics, the decrease in the participation rate is decomposed into genuine and demographic changes. The finding is a genuine decrease of 1.5% young workers out of the labor force over the twenty year period studied. A calculation of the impact of college major choice on participation is estimated by extending the decomposition, as well as estimating a logit model on participation by college major. For males certain majors (Agriculture and English and Foreign Language) correlate with lower labor force attachment, while others (Engineering, Mathematics, and Visual and Performing Arts) correspond with higher attachment. For females, graduate degrees are the strongest indicator of attachment to the labor force and being married correlates with non-attachment to the labor force. The second chapter of this research investigates the movement of young workers between labor market statuses. Rather than consider the stocks and percentages of workers in each state (i.e. charting the unemployment or participation rate), this paper analyzes the flows between statuses. A contribution of this research is to consider how labor market flows are impacted by education decisions by including schooling as a labor market status. Additionally, this chapter estimates the impact that labor market movements by young workers have on fluctuations of their unemployment rate; flows between unemployment and not-in-the-labor-force, account for over forty percent of the variation in unemployment for young workers. As young workers decide whether to participate in the labor force or continue their education, they must decide whether to forgo ``on-the-job” training and experience or attend college to acquire human capital through formal education. Following the work of John Robst (2007), the third chapter of this research considers three questions: To what extent do college graduates work in fields unrelated to their most recent degree field? Which degree fields lead to greater mismatch? What is the relationship between working outside a degree field and wages? This research first provides updated answers to these questions using data from the 2013 National Survey of College Graduates (NSCG). Additionally, this work includes new specifications of the wage penalty using parental education level, which was unavailable…

South Africa (BRICS), are researched. The purpose of this study is
to perform a comparison of the tax incentives available to support
job creation in South Africa with the tax incentives available to
support job creation in the BRIC countries. The first objective of
the comparison was to evaluate whether the tax incentives that are
available to support job creation in South Africa are on par with
those available to support job creation in the BRIC countries. The
second objective of the comparative study was to identify tax
incentives that are available in BRIC countries for job creation
that are not available in South Africa so that the government may
consider whether these incentives are feasible in South Africa. It
was found that the tax incentives that support job creation in
South Africa are in some instances on par with, and in some
instances even exceed, the tax incentives that are available to
support job creation in the BRIC countries. AFRIKAANS :
In
aansporings haalbaar is in Suid-Afrika.
