▼ The study was conducted in Kabompo and Manyinga Districts among the secondary school going pupils aged between 14 and 20.The study conducted was on how the non-availability of condoms in schools affect sexual behavior among the school going adolescents-A case study in Kabompo District and therefore sought to: (i) assess the knowledge levels of safer sex among the school going youths, (ii) establish the levels of condom use by those that are sexually active among the school going adolescents, (iii) establish how the non-availability of condoms in schools affect sexual behavior among the school going adolescents. It is estimated that 71% of HIV infections occur via heterosexual contacts where condoms are not used or used inconsistently (WHO, 2010). This has led to calls for ABCs-Abstinence, Be faithful or Condom use. This was a cross-sectional study with structured questionnaires that were employed to collect data. A sample frame of 288 randomly selected pupils was included in the study, between grades 8-12. The Picture of the two Districts as far as the Data collected and analyzed was concerned, revealed that the majority (about 60%) of the school going youths was actually engaging in sexual activities. Among those that were engaging in sexual activities, the majority had concurrent multiple partners. The Data also showed some high figures on school dropouts, STIs and abortions indicating that some sexually active teens did not abstain and that not all used protection. It was further discovered that most pupils had little knowledge about comprehensive family planning methods (duo protection), some female pupils had unsafely aborted i.e. self-induced and by friends. On gender and sexual encounters, males were more likely to engage in sex than their fellow female folks, but at the same time reported using condoms more than the females. When cross tabulation was done on school type and knowledge levels, it was found that the day scholars had more knowledge as compared to the boarders, though surprisingly that the same people that were knowledgeable were more likely to engage in sexual activities. The picture of the study that was revealed is not very different from other parts of the world that not all sexually active teens will abstain from sexual indulgence as such other countries have been striving to put measures in place to protect them e.g. the establishments of the Health Resource Centers where counseling is done and condoms can be accessed by the pupils that fail to abstain. This therefore suggests that similar measures can be brought to our settings to protect the youth as the case is in PMTCT with now the option B+ and REC strategy in immunization programs.

▼ Objective : To determine the factors associated with unsafe sexual behaviour among the youth aged 13 to 19 years, in the prevention of HIV/AIDS in Lusaka Urban. Study Design: A cross section and comparative study design was carried out in 22 basic schools in Lusaka Urban among the youth attending grades 7,8 and 9. Setting: The study was carried out in Lusaka Urban, which has the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence rate of 22% in Zambia. Lusaka is the capital city of Zambia and has a population of 1, 084,703 with the youth below 19 years of more than 50%of the population The city of Lusaka is a trading centre for goods from the East and Southern African which is part of the sub-Sahara region that has the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence in the world. Subjects: The study focused on the youth who are the future leaders and yet affected by the great HIV/AIDS epidemic. A total sample size of 319 youth (160 males and 159 females) aged 13 to 19 years in Grades 7,8and 9 selected from a line list of 25093 youth by using EPI 6 statistical calculator the study sample was selected. The subject from different schools were proportionately and conveniently selected and involved in the study. Main outcome measures: In this study unsafe sexual behaviour was used as the main outcome. The youth that were sexually active at the time of conducting the research were assumed to be involved in unsafe sexual behaviour as well as the group of youth that did not use condoms during the last sexual intercourse. Results: Social demographic factors- More males than females require assistance on safer sex methods and that more males than females were involved in premarital sex (P=<0.001), the youth aged 15 years and above were significantly more involved in premarital sex than the youth below the age of 14 years (P=<0.001) Education- There was a significant increase on premarital sex as the youth progressed from 7 to grade 9(P=<0.001). Religion- The youths belonging to Catholic church were significantly more involved in premarital sex as compared to the youth from other churches (P=0.058). Residence-The youth residing in Lusaka central Kanyama and Munali constituencies were more involved in premarital sex than the youth from other constituencies of Lusaka urban (P=<0.001).Types of guardian-The youths kept by mothers only were found to be significantly more involved in premarital sex than the youth kept by both parents (P=<0.001). From the focus group discussion it was found that most parents did not discuss HIV/AIDS and safer sex with their children. Financial support- The youth that received adequate financial support were significantly more involved in premarital sex than the youth that did not receive enough financial support (P=0.05). Knowledge factors: Perceived risk- The youth who were at higher risk of contracting HIV AIDS were found to be more involved in premarital sex than the youth who did not know that they were at risk of contracting HIV/AIDS (P=0.005). ▼ The overall objectives of this thesis were to (1) describe the sedentary behaviour levels of young people; (2) examine the impact of sedentary behaviour on obesity and other physical health outcomes among young people; and (3) examine the influence that individual, social, and environmental factors have on the sedentary behaviour of young people. Six manuscripts addressed these objectives. Manuscript one assessed the proportion of 0- to 4-year-olds meeting the new Canadian Sedentary Behaviour Guidelines for the Early Years in a sample of pre-school children. More than half of the children exceeded the guidelines and the majority of their parents believed that their child did not engage in excessive screen time. Manuscript two examined the association between types, overall volume, and patterns of sedentary behaviour with cardio-metabolic risk factors in a sample of children and adolescents. Television viewing predicted cardio-metabolic risk factors independent of moderate-to vigorous-intensity physical activity. No associations were observed for the other sedentary behaviour components. Manuscript three examined whether the relationship between television viewing and obesity in a sample of youth was mediated by dietary habits. While a positive association was observed between television viewing and body mass index, it was not explained by dietary habits. Manuscript four examined urban-rural differences in screen time in two samples of youth. Rural American youth were the most likely to be excessive television users and the least likely to be excessive computer users. Conversely, urban Canadian youth were the least likely to be excessive television users and the most likely to be excessive computer users. Manuscript five examined the association between neighbourhood disorder and screen time in a sample of youth. Participants in neighbourhoods with high social and high physical disorder were the most likely to engage in excessive screen time. Manuscript six examined associations between factors within the home setting and screen time among a sample of pre-school children. Several factors collectively explained 64.1% of the variance in television viewing including parental cognitive factors, which explained 41.0%. The findings of this thesis have important implications for future public health interventions and initiatives as well as future research in this area.

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study examines the value that body theology can add to an inclusive understanding of sexuality in adolescence. Sexuality was understood differently throughout different periods in time, but even today there is still no real clarity on what is meant by the term sexuality. Sexuality is a difficult term to define and its meaning plays an important role in the way people treat each other. Throughout the different periods the church has largely been either silent about sexuality or considered it a sin. As a result the church would not necessarily be seen as a good resource for advice on sexual matters. Adolescents go through a dramatic period of developing on a physical, cognitive and moral level, which all occur simultaneously, but sexual development is the most prominent. Sexual development prepares adolescents on a physical level to reproduce and to enter into sexual relationships, but cognitive and moral development also takes place; these two processes are supportive for the adolescent to understand and process the sexual development. These developing processes, together with the context in which an adolescent is growing up, has an impact on the type of moral value system compiled by adolescents, which determines how they behave. As already mentioned, the church is not necessarily involved in these discussions, and therefore this study challenges the churches to become involved again by making use of body theology. The research question can be formulated as follows: What contribution can body theology make to promote an inclusive understanding of sexuality during adolescence? To answer the research question, the first objective is discussed in chapter 2, namely to give a historical overview to obtain an understanding of sexuality and see how the understanding of sexuality changed over the different periods, but also to see that there were certain times when the understanding of sexuality was the same. The second objective is discussed in chapter 3, where the focus is on a historical overview of the understanding of the body. This historical overview is discussed to understand that the body often stood in an ambiguous position and dualisms formed part of the understanding of the body, but it also affects a deeper understanding of life. In chapter 4, the third objective is discussed by examining the centrality of sexual development during adolescence to understand the important role that sexual development plays in the adolescent's life, but also to realise that it affects other aspects of life. The fourth objective is discussed in chapter 5, which contains the discussion of body theology to indicate how it can promote an inclusive understanding of sexuality. This chapter also discusses how body theology developed and the importance of the body in body theology. ▼ The following study aims to provide an in-depth understanding of risk and protective factors experienced by refugee youth from the Democratic Republic of Congo residing in South Africa and their impact on the mental health of the group. The lived experiences and the mental health status and problems of adult refugees living in South Africa are well documented; however much less is known about the lived experiences and mental health statusand problems of refugee youth living in South Africa. Refugee youth living in South Africa face a number of challenges due to a high level of risk factors in their daily lives. Risks can be moderated by protective factors. Protective factors reduce the impact of risk factors and act as coping mechanisms which youth use to cope with their everyday challenges. The interaction between risk and protective factors are important as they influence youth’s mental health status. Responses to stress can be internalized or externalized problems resulting in a compromised mental health status. If responded to appropriately it can result in prosocial behaviour.The Social Development Model (SDM) was used as the theoretical framework for the project. The model was used to provide an in-depth understanding of the interactions between risk and protective factors and the impact these factors have on mental health of refugee youth. The study was qualitative where data was collected in the form of individual semi-structured interviews with eight refugee youth from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) currently living in Durban. The sample was selected through convenience and purposive sampling techniques from a larger group from the same population. Study questions were based on the main risk and protective factors that are present to participants’ lives, including those related to structural violence. The findings of the study were analyzed and presented through thematic analysis.The study revealed several key findings related to the impact of xenophobia and financial difficulties. The results of the study showed that the young women tend to internalize problems resulting in more emotional and psychological distress such as social withdrawal, anxiety and fear and young men showed both internalized and externalized problems such as fear, avoidance, poor concentration, physical violence and so forth. Altruistic tendencies, empathy and sympathy were found in both male and female participants. These prosocial behaviours were as a result of the interaction between the risk and protective factors present in the youth’s lives. Advisors/Committee Members: Sliep, Yvonne. (advisor).

Such behaviour incurs a plethora of negative consequences on the consumers and society in general, and is costly, both fiscally and socially. This research was undertaken to investigate the influences on the alcohol consumption behaviour of young people. The results of a literature review suggested that the consumption of excessive levels of alcohol is an accepted social norm and that young people drink alcohol to reach a level of intoxication. Therefore, this research predicted that changes in the price of alcohol would not have an effect on the amount of alcohol purchased and consumed by youths. It was also predicted that young people would choose to consume beverages containing a higher level of alcohol, in order to achieve the desired inebriated state. An experiment was conducted to test these predictions. Tertiary students were surveyed using a hypothetical scenario to assess the effects of price and alcohol content on their consumption behaviour. This experiment took place in both New Zealand and Australia. The results indicated that changes in price did not significantly affect consumption behaviour, in either country, supporting the initial predictions. The results also indicated that changes in alcohol content did not affect the consumption behaviour of young people in Australia, but did affect this in New Zealand. Where the percentage of alcohol content was decreased, young people in New Zealand indicated that they would purchase more alcohol, and when the alcohol content in a beverage was increased, they would purchase less. This again supports the initial predictions. The results of this experiment suggest that social norms are stronger than the effects of price on the alcohol consumption behaviour of young people. They also support the notion that young people drink to reach a level of intoxication, and thus will drink more alcohol when the percentage of alcohol in beverages is reduced. The concluding discussion section in this document explains the significance of these findings, particularly for social marketers and government policy makers. This study suggests that the current policies in place to reduce consumption, such as taxation and movements towards a maximum allowable alcohol content in some beverages, have minimal effects. ▼ The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) epidemic continue to endanger the lives of many people in the world, particularly in developing countries like South Africa (UNAIDS, 2010). South Africa has the largest percentage of people living with HIV & AIDS in the world, with AIDS continuing to be the leading cause of death(UNAIDS, 2010). Yet, as Svenson et al., (1997), Cain, (2005), Shisana et al., (2009) and Kalichman et al., (2005) argue, in spite of the HIV epidemic, risky sexual behaviour has increased among young people. Problematically, youth in university environments are reported to be uninterested in hearing about HIV, claiming to be tired and bored with the subject (HEAIDS, 2010). They think they have sufficient knowledge on HIV transmission and prevention. Regardless of this claim, a high rate of new infections of HIV among youth continues (The South African Department of Basic Education Report, 2010). The main purpose of this study was to assess UWC students’ knowledge about HIV and their attitudes towards it, while investigating the impact of the MTV-produced Shuga film on the students’ self-perception of risk and their attitudes toward HIV. The study assesses the value of a follow-up conversation on the film after it is viewed by students.In order to identify respondents’ perceptions, the study used a qualitative approach using in-depth interviews and focus group discussions as main instruments and a quantitative approach using questionnaires as a main instrument. The study used a gender-balanced convenience sample of 40 undergraduate and post-graduate students selected from University of Western Cape campus. These respondents were later divided into four focus group discussions guided by semi-structured interviews. The study findings established that although students’ knowledge levels were very high for modes of transmission and prevention of HIV, they still had a poor perception of their own risk – a factor noted as a key need in HIV prevention by Douglas Kirby (2011).This study found that, prior to watching the MTV Shuga film, the level of students’ awareness of HIV issues as related to their own risk and health was at best inconsistent. While some held accurate knowledge of HIV and understood their own vulnerability, others saw it as someone else’s problem and had yet to personalise the disease in a manner that would increase their own awareness of risk. After viewing the MTV Shuga film, study data indicated a reasonable level of positive change in attitudes and risk perception among the 40 students. However, the data clearly indicated that the follow-up discussion sessions provoked more change in the students’ attitudes and perceptions of risk than the film on its own. The study therefore suggests the importance of discussion sessions that follow up on edutainment media pieces attempting to promote positive behavioural change vis-à-vis HIV. ▼ Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) aims to help people live a life worth living. It has increasingly been developed and adapted to address a range of mental health symptoms across different ages, cognitive abilities and environmental contexts; however, its popularity in implementation has outpaced empirical research. The current study was a Process Evaluation which assessed professionals’ perspectives about a DBT-informed skills group called He Waka Eke Noa operating at Korowai Manaaki – a youth justice secure residence in New Zealand (NZ). The study involved 11 interviews with professionals across two organisations involved in facilitating He Waka Eke Noa and/or supporting the young people who participated. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the interviews and three overarching themes were identified. The first theme, ‘Factors influencing practical effectiveness’, explored areas which professionals highlighted as having a significant impact on how He Waka Eke Noa worked and had three subthemes: ‘Generalisability’, ‘Cultural Responsivity’, and ‘Criminal Justice Environment’. The second theme, ‘Theoretical application of DBT to young people in NZ’ investigated the compatibility of DBT with young people in secure youth justice residences in NZ. The final theme, ‘Motivation’, considered the role that motivation played in engagement and continuation of treatment for people involved in He Waka Eke Noa. The findings from this study shed light on how the group was operating and highlighted the importance of the relationship between facilitators and young people. It identified the challenges He Waka Eke Noa faced including the difficulty of balancing a risk-reduction approach with creating a therapeutic environment. Further developments are considered that would assist He Waka Eke Noa in maximising its effectiveness through increasing resources and ensuring diversity amongst the clinicians (e.g., increasing cultural diversity). The thesis concludes with recommendations for the future direction of operation, for example, rolling out DBT-informed skills groups in other residences and the community; and potential research avenues. Engaging in risky sexual behaviors, such as having multiple sexual partners and neglecting to use a condom, puts young adults at an increased risk for contracting HIV. The current study investigated whether sensation seeking and impulsivity predicts various risky sexual behaviors among African American young adults. In addition, we examined the indirect (mediating) effects of frequency of alcohol consumption and problem drinking on the relationship between sensation seeking/impulsivity and number of sexual partners. Data was drawn from Wave III of Add Health. Participants were 211 sexually active African American young adults between the ages of 18-26. Participants were interviewed and provided answers to questions regarding personality (i.e., sensation seeking and impulsivity), risky sexual behaviors, and frequent alcohol consumption and problem drinking during the past year. The first hypothesis was that high sensation seeking and impulsivity would predict having sexual intercourse at a younger age, having more sexual partners during the past year and during one's lifetime, and less frequent condom use during the past year. The second hypothesis was that frequency of alcohol consumption and problem drinking would mediate the relationship between sensation seeking/impulsivity and number of sexual partners during the past year and number of lifetime sexual partners. Multiple regression analyses revealed that only sensation seeking significantly predicted having sexual intercourse at a younger age, more sexual partners during the past year, and more lifetime sexual partners. Indirect effects analyses demonstrated that frequent alcohol consumption mediated the relationship between impulsivity and number of sexual partners during the past year. In addition, problem drinking mediated the relationship between both sensation seeking and impulsivity and number of lifetime sexual partners. The findings may have practical implications for prevention along with developing and implementing HIV and STI risk reduction programs for African American young adults.

▼ Over the past thirty years, the prevalence of obesity among children in the U.S. has tripled. In response to this epidemic, weight management programs have addressed issues of dietary and activity behaviors, through programs aimed at upgrading children's nutritional intake and increasing their physical activity. While obesity increase among children seems to have plateaued over the last few years, the challenge of reducing obesity remains. This dissertation examined the associations between diet and physical activity behaviors and obesity risk among a diverse sample of 4,414 children (Hispanic = 38%, African American = 36%, White = 26%), who were assessed longitudinally in both 5th and 7th grade. Direct measurements of height and weight were used to calculate body mass index (BMI) and classify participants into obese vs. non-obese. Four dietary and two physical activity behaviors were indexed based on self-report. Household education level indexed socioeconomic status (SES). In the first portion of the dissertation, as the primary aim, I examined whether physical activity is differentially associated with obesity risk in African American, Hispanic, and White youth and whether such associations are moderated by gender. To this end, main effects of obesity risk were calculated within six racial/ethnic, gender subgroups (3 racial/ethnic x 2 gender), and associations were examined while controlling for socioeconomic differences. As the secondary aim, I examined differences in physical activity across racial/ethnic and gender groups. In light of unexpected findings (see below) in the first portion of the dissertation, I expanded the focus in the second portion to examine the association between four dietary (fruit, vegetable, fast food, sugar-sweetened beverage intake) and two physical activity (exercise and television viewing) behaviors and obesity risk. As the primary aim, I examined the joint and unique contributions of these behaviors to obesity risk by race/ethnicity and gender at 5th and 7th grade assessments, while controlling for socioeconomic differences. As the secondary aim, I examined differences in behavioral prevalences across racial/ethnic and gender groups. Overall, the findings of both portions of this dissertation suggest that the proximal determinants of children's weight class, namely diet and physical activity, not only have a differential association with obesity risk among the different racial/ethnic, gender groups examined, but also have an unexpected and largely absent (> 50% of subgroups examined) association with obesity risk. With regard to physical activity, the findings indicate an inverse relationship between physical activity and obesity risk, but in less than half the racial/ethnic, gender subgroups that were examined. In lieu of these sparse and unexpected findings, further research should identify moderating influences on adolescent weight status beyond the presumed "proximal" dietary and activity influences.

▼ Children witnessing violence and directly experiencing abuse and neglect are at high risk for a number of deleterious outcomes, including psychiatric disorders and involvement in the foster care and juvenile justice systems (JJS; Cuevas, Finkelhor, Shattuck, Turner, & Hamby, 2013; Sickmund & Puzzanchera, 2014). These studies emphasize the need for effective treatment programs to address the challenges facing these youth, for which an increasingly attractive option is long-term administration of psychotropic medications. Most research to date examines the utility of such medication in the short-term (Dailey, Townsend, Dysken, & Kuskowski, 2005; Loy, Merry, Hetrick, & Stasiak, 2013), but with mixed evidence as to the long-term positive gains these medications impart on reducing delinquent behaviors, including involvement in the JJS. This study sought to examine how psychotropic medication influenced total delinquent behaviors in a given year, as well as entry into the JJS, over a seven-year time period with a sample of at-risk youth. Data were taken from the National Study of Child and Adolescent Well-Being (NSCAW) database. Results indicate that, when controlling for a proxy of socioeconomic status, baseline externalizing behavior, and the child’s gender and race, psychotropic medication treatment of at-risk youth did not appear to exert a protective effect on their engagement in delinquent behaviors over a seven-year time span. That is, while delinquent behaviors decreased over time, it was not due to the medication regimen of the youth. Further, psychotropic medication treatment of at-risk youth does not appear to exert a protective effect on these youths’ entry into the JJS over a seven-year time span. That is, youth who were either consistently- or inconsistently-medicated were at significantly increased risk of entry into the JJS – up to 9.3 times higher risk for consistently medicated youth – particularly within the first 20 months of the study. Further, while such risk stabilized after the two-year mark, youth who received psychotropic medication remained at higher risk than never-medicated youth, particularly if the medication regimen was consistent. Explanations, and implications of, these findings are discussed, as well as future directions for research

▼ The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of selected perceptual and demographic factors on the self-reported aggressive/violent behaviors of young adults while they were enrolled in school. Specific objectives formulated to guide the research were to: 1)determine the level of involvement in violence and violent behaviors; 2) determine the attitudes and beliefs of young adults; 3)determine the environmental conditions experienced by young adults when last in school; 4)determine if a relationship exists between the level of violence and violent behavior and selected perceptual and environmental factors among young adults, and finally 5)determine if a model exists to explain the level of violence and violent behavior. A descriptive correlational design was used to investigate the relationship between variables. Data was collected using a compendium of survey instruments that were developed to measure violence-related attitudes, beliefs and behaviors. Five adult education centes were used for data collection. The target population was defined as young adults (18-25 years of age) enrolled in adult education programs. The outcome measure, "Aggressive Behavior," was correlated with each of the other perceptual, behavioral and environmental measures. Sixteen of the 18 perceptual independent variables were found to be significantly correlated with the dependent variable. The variable that was found to be most highly correlated with the aggressive behavior score was "Weapon Carrying Anywhere." Other variables found to have "very strong" associations with the dependent variable were "Weapon Carrying on School Property" and "Weapon Carrying Going To and From School." Two other variables, "Weapon Carrying-Guns" and "Attitudes toward Gangs," were found to have "substantial" associations with the dependent variable. Results of the multiple regression analysis found that the variable, "Weapon Carrying Anywhere," when considered alone explained 72.7% of the variance in the dependent variable; while two other variables "Weapon Carrying on School Property" and "Normative Beliefs about Aggression," explained an additional 6.7% of the variance in the dependent variable. Together, these three variables alone explained 79.4% of the variance in the dependent variable.

▼ This study addresses the hitherto limited research on sexually abusive children and youths in New Zealand (NZ). It encompasses children (12 years or younger) and youths (13 to 19 years) referred to the three largest specialised community sexual offender treatment programmes in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch over a 9?? year period. Additionally, three special populations are considered: female sexually abusive youth, youth with ???special needs??? and children (12 years and under). To increase our understanding of the individual, offending and family characteristics of these children and youths in specialised community treatment programmes in New Zealand Study One audited client???s clinical files (N = 702). Consistent with international research, New Zealand children and youth who engaged in sexually abusive behaviours not only presented with sexually abusive behaviour(s) but also had other psychological and behavioural issues. These included a history of childhood sexual and physical abuse (38%, n = 263 and 39%, n = 272 respectively), behavioural (63%, n = 442) and mental health problems (65%, n = 457), drug and alcohol misuse (22%, n = 156) and a history of suicide ideation or deliberate self-harm (27%, n = 187). They often had poor social skills (46%, n = 326) and had struggled to establish appropriate peer relationships (44%, n = 306). Many of the children and youth came from multi-problem and chaotic family backgrounds (e.g., 55%, n = 387 of parents were divorced or separated, 38%, n = 267 were exposed to domestic violence and 32%, n = 222 had family member(s) with a substance abuse problem) and had experienced numerous out-of-home placements (57%, n = 389). Factors associated with resiliency were also investigated. It was found that children and youth primarily victimised male and female children (12 years or younger) (70%, n = 1407), who were acquaintances (57%, n = 1295) or relatives (32%, n = 730). Very few victimised strangers (7%, n = 86 of victims were strangers). They engaged in both ???hands on??? (e.g., penetrative acts) and ???hands off??? offences (e.g., voyeurism). Study Two was a naturalistic treatment outcome study to explore treatment outcomes and involved 682 sexually abusive children and youth who attended three specialised community treatment programmes in New Zealand. The main outcome of interest was sexual recidivism (prevalence rate of re-offending during the follow-up period) with secondary outcome variables of general and violent recidivism. The follow-up period ranged from 1 year to 10 years (mean 4.5 years, SD = 2.2). Three groups were compared: the ???Comparison??? group (referral or assessment only, n = 300), ???Treatment Dropout??? group (those who prematurely terminated their involvement in treatment, n = 165) and the ???Treatment Completer??? group (those successfully completing treatment, n = 217). ▼ The present study was motivated by a gap in the knowledge about the help seeking attitudes and behaviours of South African rural youth. The aim of the study was to determine the help seeking behaviours and attitudes of non-university youth from eMashingeni, KwaZulu-Natal. The study explored problems that are frequently experienced by the youth and the sources of help from which the youth prefer to seek help for the problems they experience. The study also investigated youths' attitudes towards psychological help. The study adopted a quantitative-descriptive method. The researcher sampled 48 participants by means of a non-probability convenience sampling technique. The instruments for the study consisted of an adapted questionnaire with three sections. The questionnaires were distributed to the participants and the researcher was available to explain anything which was not clear. The quantitative data were captured and analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) and presented in frequency tables, pie charts and bar graphs. The fmdings of the study revealed two major problems frequently encountered by the youth of eMashingeni. These problems were financial issues and feeling unhappy with life. Other problems that were encountered by some, although not the majority were interpersonal problems, as well as somatic complaints. As expected, the study also revealed that close friends and a partner were the most preferred sources of help. Other indicated sources of help included medical doctors and professional psychologists. The study showed that although the youth have a positive attitude towards psychological help, they are ambivalent about whether psychological help would be the first choice of treatment when in distress. Further, the time and costs involved in the process of seeking counselling and psychotherapy elicited doubts in the youth as to whether they would consider seeking psychological help. These findings depict a slight shift from previous studies which reported clearly negative attitudes from the youth. The findings suggest a great need for the availability and accessibility of free psychological services for rural youth, as well as a need for psychoeducation and awareness campaigns about psychological services. ▼ This report is a result of the attachment and study of the sexual and reproductive health services provided to young people in Kabushi Township of Ndola by the Ndola District Health Management Team. It is a culmination of an attachment to such services in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Communication for Development Degree at the University of Zambia. The study intended to appraise the activities and the communication strategies used to disseminate sexual and reproductive health information and education especially HIV/AIDS prevention to young people in Kabushi Township of Ndola. The report presents what was found out in terms of the activities and strategies that were used to reach young people. The report starts by introducing the problem and the rationale for the study. It discusses the methodologies used to collect data and presents the results or the findings. The findings of the study show that although a lot of young people identified HIV/AIDS as the most urgent and serious health concern, most of them did not access adequate information, education and services for HIV prevention. The approaches used so far of static service at the health centre were not so effective in attracting young people to information and services. There is need for wider approaches that take into consideration the fact that HIV is not a health problem only but a developmental problem too, requiring multi dimensional approaches, if the objective of reducing the further spread of the disease especially among young people has to be realized. The major conclusion of the report is that, HIV/AIDS service delivery programmes should be designed to face complex tasks. Behaviour change strategies typically require the use of various channels to communicate messages. Because the disease is complex, it affects all aspects of human society from the cultural sphere to the religious, political and economic spheres and therefore must be tackled using multiple strategies. The strategies and activities employed in Kabushi Township to attract young people to information and education on HIV/AIDS prevention need to be supplemented with a lot of community outreach activities. Some of the strategies and the activities that can be used to have an effective programme in Kabushi in particular and other communities in general come as recommendations at the end of the report.

Evidence suggests that child maltreatment is associated with externalizing, antisocial, and criminal behaviour, although the mechanisms explaining this association remain poorly understood. The purpose of this thesis research is twofold: to deepen current understanding of the relationship between maltreatment and behaviour problems, and to understand the potential intervening role of child welfare services in influencing this relationship. With few Canadian studies in this area, an aim of this research is to provide a foundation from which future research can expand. Three academic papers comprise this research. The first paper entails a comprehensive analysis and application of relevant theories to understanding the association between maltreatment and behaviour problems. The second paper utilizes data from the Ontario Incidence Study of Reported Child Abuse and Neglect (OIS-2013) to examine whether dimensions of maltreatment and cumulative risk explain why certain maltreated young people exhibit behaviour problems and others do not. The third paper uses OIS-2013 data to provide a snapshot of the child welfare services delivered to maltreated children and youth who exhibit aggressive and/or criminal behaviour. The findings indicate that the relationship between maltreatment and behaviour problems is complex and dependent on processes at every level of childrenâ s ecologies. Aggressive children were more likely to experience severe and co-occurring forms of maltreatment and to experience higher levels of cumulative child risks. In adolescence, youth exhibiting aggressive or criminal behaviour commonly experienced abandonment, a form of neglect in which caregivers are not willing or able to remain a caregiver. While aggression in younger children was not associated with an increased likelihood of receiving child welfare services, maltreated adolescents displaying aggressive behaviour were significantly more likely to be placed in out-of-home care, often in restrictive settings. These findings are discussed with respect to their implications for child welfare practitioners, policy makers, administrators, researchers, and educators.
