▼ The Mowry Shale is an organic-rich, siliceous shale that deposited in the shallow, epeiric Mowry Sea during the early stages of the Greenhorn Transgression. The proximal to intermediate Mowry Shale (Bighorn Basin) consists primarily of siltstone, sandstones, and mudstones. Storm processes likely had strong influence on the deposition and oxygenation of the Mowry Shale in the Bighorn Basin. Based on elemental geochemistry analysis, it is unlikely that the Mowry Shale in the Bighorn Basin was anoxic for extended lengths of time and never euxinic. The distal Mowry Shale in the Powder River Basin consists primarily of silt laminae and mudstones. Elemental geochemistry, coupled with stratigraphic analysis, indicates that even the most distal Mowry Shale was prone to reoxygenation and benthic activity for brief periods. The Mowry Shale likely fluctuated rapidly between times of suboxic and anoxia, with rare times of euxinia. Molybdenum and uranium enrichment crossplots indicate a time of varying levels of oxygenation and basin restriction. Molybdenum-TOC crossplots suggest that the Mowry Sea was a weakly, possibly moderately restricted basin. Understanding the diagenesis of the silica, organic matter, and clays is key to unlocking the Mowry Shale as an unconventional tight oil play. Data suggests that the water rich fluid saturations seen in the Mowry Shale are indicative of competition for pore space with water from dehydrated opal and smectite, as well as hydrocarbons from maturing kerogen. Additionally, the excess silica in the Mowry Shale is possibly preventing cation exchange during illite-smectite diagenesis, resulting in highly expandable layers, even at depth. It is also possible that the addition of silicon cations during this process is even further saturating the pores with silica, reducing porosity significantly. The hot, deep Powder River Basin offers opportunities for Mowry Shale development. Areas with Muddy Sandstone bottom-hole temperatures greater than 220 °F are suggested to be prospective in the Powder River Basin. Favorable areas for exploration are located in areas with average resistivity values greater than 8 ohm-m. This thesis provides a base level for understanding the stratigraphic framework and geochemistry and the compilation of a large dataset from multiple sources provides a stepping stone for further research. ▼ A significant portion of the world's uranium resources are hosted by sandstone-hosted roll-front deposits. This type of deposit is an attractive exploration target as it is amenable to in situ mining methods. Roll-front deposits form when oxidized, uranium-bearing groundwater encounters a redox boundary creating a crescent-shaped ore body. Reducing conditions downstream of the ore body are thought to be maintained by the presence of diagenetic pyrite or organic material within the host aquifer. However, some roll-front deposits occur within aquifers that contain only low amounts of in situ reductants. Under such circumstances it is possible that leakage of reduced fluids along faults creates the necessary chemical trap for deposit formation. The Buss Pit is a roll-front deposit in the Gas Hills district of Wyoming hosted by sandstones of the Wind River Formation. The host rocks of this past producer contain low amounts of organic carbon and minor diagenetic pyrite, possibly not providing a sufficient amount of reductant to form a major uranium deposit. The Gas Hills district, however, is known for the surface discharge of hydrocarbons derived from deep in the Wind River Basin. A three-dimensional model of the deposit area has been developed to test whether there is a potential connection between the location of uranium ore at the Buss Pit and faults that may control upflow of mobile reductants. Geophysical logs were used to reconstruct the deposit stratigraphy, shape of ore zones, and location of faults. The stratigraphy of the Wind River Formation was modeled by correlating resistance curves across the study area. The shape of the ore zones and the grade distribution were derived by digitizing gamma ray curves and calculating equivalent percent uranium oxide grades for each log. The interpreted geophysical dataset was combined to create a three-dimensional model that shows resistive and non-resistive lithologies, ore zones, and major faults. The host rock succession is composed primarily of fining-up units of dominantly arkosic conglomerate to sandstone with variably discontinuous siltstone to mudstone interbeds. This sedimentary package has six fining-up units that dip gently to the south. The steeply dipping, normal Buss fault strikes E-SE, bisecting the deposit area and historic open pit. The ore zones were modeled into three grade shells, which generally occur in resistive lithologies in the southwest quadrant of the study area. Grade shells define an amalgamation of intricate planar and crescent-shaped ore bodies that collectively dip to the west. The three-dimensional model highlights the spatial relationship between the ore zones of the Buss Pit deposit and the faults. The complexity of the ore zone morphologies can only be explained by upflow of mobile reductants along the fault. ▼ Over 10,000 feet of marine and nonmarine Late Cretaceous sedimentary rocks are exposed within a 110 square mile area in northeastern Teton County, Wyoming. An additional 1400 feet of nonmarine Paleocene and Miocene rocks overlie these. Landslide deposits and Pleistocene glacial moraine cover over one-half of the area. The Late Cretaceous Cody Shale and Bacon Ridge Sandstone, which are the oldest rocks exposed, represent the last marine invasion of the region. The overlying Late Cretaceous nonmarine rocks consist of the Coaly Sequence, Lenticular Sandstone and Shale Sequence, Mesaverde Formation, and Harebell Formation. These formations are composed largely of poorly sorted quartz arenites with intercalated mudstones, claystones, shales, and coals. A few quartzite conglomerate lenses are present near the top of the sequence. These rocks, which contain numerous quartz, chert, and metaquartzite grains, were derived from Precambrian metamorphic and Paleozoic sedimentary rocks exposed to the west and northwest. The sediments were carried into the area by streams and were deposited on a broad coastal plain similar to the modern Texas Gulf Coast. Many of the fine-grained sediments were deposited in swamps and small freshwater lakes. Near the end of Cretaceous time, a large area of Precambrian Beltian quartzite was exposed in central Montana. Powerful streams carried large volumes of coarse sediments into the area mapped forming the Paleocene Pinyon Conglomerate. Basalt and andesite were extruded locally during the Miocene. Morainal deposits from two Pleistocene glacial stages are recognized. Two periods of Laramide deformation are represented by broad asymmetric folds. The Spread Creek anticline, a large doubly plunging fold, was formed near the end of Cretaceous time. Three adjacent folds to the northeast are post-Paleocene in age. Several high-angle faults are present. Structural and stratigraphic conditions appear to be favorable for the formation and accumulation of oil and gas. However, five dry oil and gas test holes have been drilled. The possibilities of finding commercial production are not encouraging. The area has also been prospected for coal and alluvial gold. ▼ The Hog Park Creek watershed, in south-central Wyoming, has experienced several anthropogenic influences through time, the most notable in contemporary times being a reservoir in the upper extent of the watershed that was initially constructed in 1965 (Stage 1) and then later enlarged in 1985 (Stage 2). Flows released from the reservoir augment flows in Hog Park Creek. The existence of the channel-spanning dam creates a direct and identifiable disruption in the function of the two main drivers of geomorphic process: the water discharge, which has nearly doubled annually, and the concomitant disruption in the sediment transport regime. In order to assess channel responses, multiple analyses across a range of spatial and temporal scales were conducted. These include: a covariate hydrologic analysis relating three operational time periods using the Index of Hydrologic Alteration (IHA) software; an examination of the channel planform change from historical aerial photographs; analyses of annually repeated cross section survey data; and a study of bank erosion dynamics using the Bank Stability and Toe Erosion Model (BSTEM). The timing, magnitude and duration of flows have been altered since the Stage 1 implementation of the reservoir in 1965. Following a Stage 2 enlargement in 1985, the snowmelt-dominated hydrograph has most notably experienced a shift to bimodal high flows (an early spring, low-magnitude flow release from the reservoir and a late spring, high-magnitude flow release from the reservoir), a 550% increase in seasonal low flows, and a 10% reduction in peak discharges. The discharge historically corresponding to a 5-year recurrence interval now occurs annually under Stage 2 reservoir operations. Hence, formational flows for channel morphology have increased in both frequency and duration. The reduction in flow variability has ultimately altered the sediment transport regime, which is the base of the productivity and disturbance regimes that influence food web interactions, the composition of riparian vegetation and other ecological attributes of the pre-dam river ecosystem. Aerial photographic analysis of 29 years prior to and 36 years following the construction of the dam indicates an adjustment of channel width both temporally and spatially through the system. Statistical analyses suggest that the overall rate of change corresponds significantly to both location in the watershed (distance downstream of the reservoir) and the operation of the reservoir (volume, timing, and duration of water released). Most notably, the channel has shifted to a single-thread channel with reduced morphologic heterogeneity. Responses are most abrupt immediately downstream of the dam following its construction in 1965, whereas responses are more muted and delayed in the furthest downstream study reach. ▼ The developmental patterns of five fuel resources located within the state of Wyoming are examined through time and in relation to several factors external to the location of the fuels. An historic description and inventory of the five fuels: petroleum; natural gas; oil shale; coal; uranium are presented. External factors including governmental activities; economic and technological conditions as well as socio-environmental factors are portrayed as having cyclical Impacts upon the developmental and utilization patterns of Wyoming's fuels. Emphasis is particularly placed upon the ever increasing impact of societal concerns regarding environmental aspects of governmental and economic/technological activities. The external factors are examined in terms of their total impact on Wyoming's role as a regional and national supplier of fuel. Spatial aspects of the fuel resources in terms of their acquisition, transportation facilities and market areas are examined through time using various descriptive and quantitative measures. Policy implications for the successful implementation of federal energy development programs are discussed and evaluated in relation to an investigation of the aforementioned external factors, spatial considerations, and constraints. The author posits that the implica:- tions for policy decisions concerning energy on a national level are magnified at either a regional or state level. The solutions to environmental, economic and social problems as well as the traditional technological difficulties of mining which are found in Wyoming may be a microcosm of solutions which could be implemented on a national scale. Wyoming has traditionally been an exporter of its fuel resources, and the state's economy has generally been reactive to the national and political environment. The state has now begun to assume a role of leadership in energy resource development. ▼ Improving estimates of seismic source parameters is fundamental for understanding earthquake processes and enhancing current seismic event monitoring capabilities. In this dissertation I address several scientific challenges regarding the characterization (location, magnitude, etc.) of seismic events. Better source characterization allows us to relate seismic activity to observed surface deformation and to the broader tectonic implications of hazardous earthquakes. From a seismological perspective, I extend recently-developed surface-wave based methods to characterize seismic events across a wider range of tectonic environments, event sizes, station distributions, noise environments, and seismic source types. The first study documented is focused on constraining the relative locations and sizes of moderate-magnitude earthquakes in the 2013-2014 Minab sequence, Iran. We combined surface-wave cross correlation measurements, surface-wave spectra, and teleseismic body-wave modeling to constrain epicentroid locations, magnitudes, and depths. The results show that at least in some cases, we can use distant observations to improve the precision of relative earthquake epicentroid locations and magnitudes of remote earthquake sequences in tectonically complex regions. An appendix documents the results from relative relocations across the broad region including and surrounding Iran. Also included is a study of the 2014-15 Bushkan earthquake sequence, Iran. For this moderate-magnitude, shallow event, we used a combination of surface wave analysis, body wave modeling, and InSAR observations to characterize the mainshock and larger aftershocks. This study illuminates the opportunities provided by joint analysis of geodetic and seismological observations from modest-magnitude, shallow earthquakes in remote regions. Next I describe a study in which we characterize earthquake activity along the northwestern Caribbean plate boundary. We analyzed the earthquake processes along this margin by computing precise relative locations and magnitudes of moderate sized earthquakes from 1976 to 2018, and comparing the source-time functions and finite-fault models of the two largest recent earthquakes in the region. The relocation analysis allows us to improve relative event locations that help define the seismically active portions of the plate boundary more clearly. The finite-fault rupture models suggest that the large earthquakes along this strike-slip system may be influenced by faulting asperities and/or restraining bend features. The fourth study is an extension of the relative event location and magnitude estimation methods used in previous analyses. We estimate precise relative locations and magnitudes of small industrial explosions across Pennsylvania, USA using local and near-regional short-period shear-wave observations. The analysis is an effective illustration of the use of cross correlation of local-distance observations to compute high precision relative location and magnitude estimates of low-yield seismic sources. ▼ In the western United States, sagebrush (Artemisia spp L.) dominated rangelands are extensive, accounting for approximately 63 million ha. The Wyoming big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata Nutt. ssp. wyomingensis Beetle & Young) alliance is found in more xeric environments, occupying the largest area of the big sagebrush complex in areas within a 200-300mm precipitation zone at elevations ranging from 610-2130m. Wyoming big sagebrush communities provide habitat for nearly 100 bird and 70 mammal species throughout its range. A species that is of particular concern is the sage grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus Bonaparte), which depends on big sagebrush associations for food, nesting and cover. Much of its historical range has Redacted for privacy Redacted for privacy dwindled, prompting increasing scrutiny on land use and management throughout the big sagebrush association. Destruction of remaining habitat and the danger of invasion by annual grasses such as cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum L.), has necessitated the assessment of the effects of disturbance such as fire on these communities. This study was designed to: (A) determine the effects of prescribed fire on vegetation characteristics, (B) analyze the specific response of forbs and arthropods that are important in the diet of sage grouse to fire, and (C) compare the Modified- Whittaker and Daubenmire methods of estimating species richness and vegetation cover in a Wyoming big sagebrush community. In the first project, prescribed fire had little effect on herbaceous density, cover, or species richness, but did increase perennial grass and total herbaceous standing crop the second and third year post burn, and annual forb standing crop the first and second year. Big sagebrush and total shrub cover and density were greatly reduced in burned treatments. Green rabbitbrush cover was greater in unburned treatments, but no change in density was noted. Burning did not affect soil water availability. The second project showed little overall benefit to perennial forbs preferred by sage grouse, however there was a short-lived increase in Microsteris/Collinsia parviflora (Lindl.) cover in the second post burn year. Prescribed fire may be detrimental to Hymenoptera abundance. Orthoptera may benefit from prescribed fire, but further exploration is needed in that area. Annual exotic species richness was not shown to increase in either sampling method or treatment in the third project. This is important, as it shows that sites which are dominated by a large proportion of native species from various functional groups can resist invasion. There was no clear-cut delineation between the Modified-Whittaker and Daubenmire methods. While there were some similarities in the data between the two, the Modified-Whittaker method had substantially different percent cover estimations for perennial grass and total herbaceous components in 2005. ▼ Cougars (Puma concolor) are elusive top-level predators and their predation patterns, particularly upon sensitive species, can be a source of concern to wildlife managers. Predation patterns, however, vary widely in accordance with differing landscape attributes, prey community composition, and preferences of individual cougars. The objective of this study was to better understand the impact of cougars upon their prey in the Pryor Mountains of Wyoming and Montana. Managers were concerned that cougar predation was having a negative impact upon a small, isolated Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis canadensis) population and were hoping predation might be limiting a burgeoning feral horse population (Equus caballus). With GPS collar data, we examined cougar kills (n = 200) to determine kill rates, prey composition, and selection for prey. Our findings indicated this population of cougars preyed primarily on mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus; 71.5%) but also included a substantial amount of bighorn sheep (8.0%) and other prey items (19.5%) in their diet. All bighorn kills were attributable to a specialist individual and we found no evidence of predation upon feral horses. Results showed that, while cougar predation was not limiting the feral horse population, at times, predation could be one of a host of factors limiting the bighorn sheep population. To better understand the link between the risk of cougar predation and landscape attributes, we examined predation-specific resource selection by cougars. We first compared our set of confirmed kill sites to random sites at a fine scale (within 25 m of kill sites). We then built resource selection functions to conduct a coarse-scale analysis by using the 95% upper cut-off point of the known distances-dragged (94.9 m) to buffer caches sites, thereby creating zones of risk which had high probabilities of containing kill sites. We found that risk of cougar predation was associated with vegetation class and increased with decreasing horizontal visibility. ▼ The Phosphoria Rock Complex (PRC) includes: cherts, organic-rich mudrocks, and phosphorites of the Phosphoria Fm.; carbonates of the Park City Fm.; sandstones of the Shedhorn Fm.; and redbeds and evaporites of the Goose Egg Fm. The Permian succession at Sheep Mountain anticline near the southern margin of the Wind River basin in Fremont County, WY, is dominated by carbonates of the Park City Fm., but also includes phosphorites and mudrocks of the Phosphoria Fm. All three members of the Park City Fm. (i.e., Grandeur, Franson, and Ervay) crop out at Sheep Mountain. With potential source rocks to the west and potential sealing facies to the east, understanding the facies and facies changes in the carbonate members is crucial to exploring for stratigraphic traps in the Wind River basin. Carbonate facies and facies associations in the Ervay and Franson members indicate that deposition occurred along a very gently-dipping, westward-facing, carbonate ramp. Facies distribution between these two members is relatively similar, with the Ervay having a higher proportion of peloid packstones and ooid grainstones, and the underlying Franson having a higher proportion of bioclast packstones and intraclast packstones and wackestones. The position of Sheep Mountain along the carbonate ramp during Ervay time, therefore, was shallower than during Franson time, which may reflect the synchronous northwestward shift of the basin depocenter. The basal Grandeur Member is significantly more complicated, and a carbonate ramp may not be the most appropriate model for describing its depositional system. It is dominated by calcareous sandstones, silicified microbialites, and sandy carbonates. Sequence stratigraphic studies of the Park City Fm. to date have generally concluded that periods of dominant carbonate growth coincided with highstand systems tract deposition. Three main "cycles", separated by regional sequence boundaries, have been described by previous workers in terms of their respective carbonate members (i.e., Ervay Cycle, Franson Cycle, and Grandeur Cycle). The findings of this study support the hypothesis of carbonate growth dominating during highstands but also show that significant carbonate growth occurred during transgressive systems tract deposition. Indeed, this interpretation is supported by facies association stacking patterns in outcrop, increase in phosphate content upward and basinward, hardground development as a result of transgression, and well log character in the surrounding subsurface wells. As such, most of the Franson carbonate at Sheep Mountain likely represents the transgressive systems tract deposition (and possibly lowstand systems tract deposition) of the Ervay Cycle. Based on the integration of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) data, phosphate accumulation generally occurred during transgressive and early highstand deposition. ▼ Powder River Basin is one of the biggest interior sedimentary basins in the Rocky Mountain region. The Upper Cretaceous section of the southern Powder River Basin includes the Niobrara Formation, which is one of the most significant source rocks of the Western Interior Cretaceous Seaway, and it is overlain by lower Pierre Shale which consists mostly of progradational shale sequences and two productive sandstone members encased in these shales. In the southern Powder River Basin, the lower Pierre Shale is made up of eight members. These members are progradational highstand deposits of the Gammon Ferruginous Member; lowstand prograding wedge deposits consisting of the Shannon Sandstone, the Unnamed Member, and the Sussex Sandstone; transgressional Ardmore Pedro Bentonite Beds and Sharon Springs members; and highstand deposits of the Mitten Black Shale and Red Bird Silty members. The Shannon and Sussex sandstone members are known targets for oil production. The Sharon Springs Member of the lower Pierre shale has relatively high organic carbon content. Therefore, determining its continuity throughout the study area and its source rock potential was one of the main focuses of this study in addition to building the sequence stratigraphic framework for the lower Pierre Shale interval. Based on an integrated research of 1490 raster well-log data with three cores, this study demonstrates that the lower Pierre Shale interval is a Type 1 Ramp Margin Sequence. While previous studies were primarily focused on individual sandstone members or parts of the lower Pierre Shale section in relatively limited areas, this study provides an in depth sequence stratigraphic analysis of the lower Pierre Shale interval. The sequence stratigraphic framework was built based on well-log correlations, core descriptions, isopach maps and three-dimensional surface maps of each member, and one master west east oriented cross section throughout the study area. According to this sequence stratigraphic analysis, a depositional model connecting the Bighorn Basin to the Southern Powder River Basin was created. The depositional model demonstrates that the Shannon Sandstone, Unnamed, and Sussex Sandstone Members were deposited as an encased lowstand prograding wedge between the progradational Gammon Ferruginous Member and the transgressional Ardmore Pedro Bentonite Beds and Sharon Springs members hundreds of miles basinward from the stratigraphically equal Mesaverde lowstand sandstones of the Bighorn Basin. The shift of facies across such long distances is explained with the forced regression that has taken place during the deposition of the uppermost Gammon Ferruginous Member and the following deposition of Shannon and Sussex sandstone members farther in the basin compared to the synchronous shoreline sands. Source rock analyses within the Sharon Springs interval demonstrate that member is moderately organic rich (TOC wt. % 1.27-2.72) and it is thermally mature (Tmax 437-440 °C) within the study area. ▼ Silo Field, located approximately 17 miles northeast of Cheyenne, Wyoming, is an important Niobrara oil field. The field produces from open, vertical, natural fractures that trend northwest-southeast across the field. Several proposed ideas for fracture genesis include: differential compaction or folding over basement highs, proximity to regional fault and fracture systems, pore fluid pressure increases due to hydrocarbon generation, and reactivation of pre-existing faults. This study integrated previous work, 3-D seismic, and FMI log analysis in order to determine the nature of faulting and fracturing in Silo Field, the nature of the Permian salt edge, and how basement structure tied in with the observed features. The main features observed in the seismic data were: a fault-bound syncline (possible wrench faults penetrating from the basement through the Niobrara) in the northwestern corner, a possible listric detached fault system in the Niobrara which may be a polygonal fault system in the south-central area, and a northwest-southeast trending Permian salt edge. The overall structure of Silo Field is a structural monocline. The fault-bound syncline feature is present at all of the mapped horizons (basement, Wolfcamp, Permian salt, Sundance, Dakota, Niobrara, Pierre event, and the shallow horizon). In this study, the basement structure appeared to have some control on all of the main features. The open fracture directions within the main field area were oriented parallel to the syncline faults. A lineament analysis showed that some of the listric faults corresponded to surface lineaments, indicating that the fault orientations might be influenced by basement faults. The location of the Permian salt edge appears to follow the syncline faults relatively closely, meaning that basement structure might be controlling the salt edge in Silo Field. Finally, the structural monocline present in the field is partially controlled by differential compaction over the salt edge. However, based on the interpretations of possible basement faults that follow surface lineaments, the structural monocline could also have a component of basement control. All of this information demonstrates that Silo Field is a field heavily controlled by the nature of the basement. ▼ Fractures can increase the permeability and producability of reservoirs by acting as fluid and gas conduits to wells. Networks of fractures are most important in reservoirs where little to no matrix permeability exists such as tight gas sandstones. Two significant variables, fracture length and the abundance of fractures, are not readily measurable from subsurface observations such as those obtained from cores or well logs. Numerical models suggest natural fracture apertures and lengths follow systematic power-law (Marrett, 1996; Olson, 2007) and negative exponential distributions (Olson, 2004); fracture trace lengths are interrogated. This study tests those propositions through study of fractures in outcrop. Outcrops of the Cretaceous Frontier Formation at Oyster Ridge in southwest Wyoming and Oil Mountain near Casper, in central Wyoming provide evidence of reservoir scale fracture networks in sandstones. In the subsurface the Frontier Formation sandstones are reservoirs that produce gas and oil in several Wyoming basins. I mapped fracture patterns at twenty locations at Oyster Ridge and Oil Mountain and measured fracture trace length distributions and abundance (intensity). Fracture cumulative length distribution plots illustrate systematic length distributions. Trace length distributions of every fracture network follow negative exponential distributions regardless of the number of fractures (N = 39 to N = 394) or the size of the outcrop (1.3 to 710 m²). Results show that the fractures follow a negative exponential distribution over a range of lengths of a few centimeters to tens of meters. These trace length distributions are consistent with geomechanical model fracture pattern simulation results by Olson (2004) that suggests negative exponential trace length distribution result from fracture to fracture interaction during fracture formation. Length distributions from my field study are inconsistent with pattern simulation results by Marrett (1996) and Olson (2007) and others that produce power-law length distributions. This inconsistency suggests that the model assumptions of Olson (2004) best account for the patterns I observed. Two dimensional fracture intensity, defined as the total fracture trace length divided by the map area, was measured for each outcrop to determine how structural position affects fracture abundance patterns. Two-dimensional fracture intensity measurements collected at thirteen structural locations around Oil Mountain show higher values of fracture intensity near the fold-axial-trace compared to fold limbs. The difference is as much as 7.4 fractures per meter near fold hinges compared to 0.63 fractures per meter in fold limbs. Outcrops near small faults, with displacement of a few meters, show an increase in fracture intensity from background values around 4.8 fractures per meter to values nearly three times as high (13 fractures per meter) near faults. ▼ Knowledge is based on a set of assumptions about reality and the world that is dictated by environment, tradition and religion (Sterling, 1990). Indigenous people and their culturally specific knowledge associated with local ecosystems are being credited with bio-diversity protection around the world. As a result, environmental managers are acknowledging the long-range environmental benefits of indigenous approaches for managing natural resources. This recognition has catalyzed the inclusion of indigenous people in the development of sustainable resource management solutions, affording them a voice in nature conservation and resource management agendas in areas around the world. However, in the United States, Native Americans' cultural and ecological knowledge of local ecosystems has been overlooked in making resource management decisions. Although current research has explored the value and protection of indigenous knowledge, little effort has been focused on developing ways to integrate indigenous ecological knowledge with Euro-American scientific knowledge to obtain sustainable solutions to resource dilemmas. This thesis concentrated on developing a conceptual model of Shoshone and Arapaho indigenous ecological knowledge associated with water and the riparian corridor. The research has shown that elements of the Shoshone and Arapaho indigenous knowledge systems that were incorporated in Tribal water law are not reflected in Wyoming water laws. The methodology applied in this thesis was developed into a procedural outline to determine whether indigenous ecological and cultural knowledge has been equitably integrated into Euro-American water management schemes. This procedure may provide a concrete outline for applying these techniques to varying resource management questions within different indigenous cultures. The research shows that indigenous ecological knowledge and management practice associated with river corridor areas are related to the culturally significant perceptions and uses of biological and natural resources of the localized ecosystem. L'étude a pour but de caractériser les facteurs de contrôles de la distribution des propriétés pétrophysiques et mécaniques dans les réservoirs carbonatés. Pour y répondre, il a été entrepris une démarche intégrant des analyses sédimento-diagénétiques (sédimentologiques, pétrographiques, géochimiques…) et de la fracturation (stratigraphie mécanique et stratigraphie de fracture, hiérarchisation, chronologie…). L'acquisition des données a été réalisée sur un analogue de terrain d'un réservoir carbonaté fracturé : la Formation Madison, d'âge Carbonifère inférieur (357-340 Ma), affleurant dans le Bassin de Bighorn (Wyoming, USA) et qui est aussi un réservoir exploité en subsurface. Cette acquisition a été réalisée dans cinq sites : Wind River Canyon, Shell Canyon, Sheep Mountain, Shoshone Canyon, et Clark's Fork Canyon (selon une polarité paléogéographique proximale - distale).Dans le Wyoming (USA), la Formation Madison est une série carbonatée, atteignant une épaisseur de 340 m, formée de sept séquences de dépôt basse fréquence (SBF). Les deux premières (SBF1 et 2) se sont formées sur une rampe qui, en conséquence de progradations extensives, s'est aplanie progressivement pour former une plate-forme sur laquelle se sont déposées les cinq autres séquences (SBF3 à 7). SBF1 à 3, d'âge Kinderhookien à Osagéen inférieur, se sont formées sous climat aride à la faveur d'une subsidence tectonique générale compensant les chutes eustatiques épisodiques. Les cortèges de rétrogradation se caractérisent par le développement étendu des milieux inter- à supratidaux et des processus de précipitation d'évaporites et dolomitisation.

The purpose of this study is to characterize factors controlling the distribution of the petrophysical and mechanical properties in carbonate reservoirs. To do so, a pluridisciplinary approach integrating sedimento-diagenetic and fracturing analyses on a carbonate reservoir analogue: he Madison Formation, (Lower Carboniferous, 357-340 My), outcropping in the Bighorn Basin (Wyoming, USA) and that is also a subsurface reservoir.The Madison Formation is a 340 m thick carbonate series composed of seven low frequency depositional sequences (LFS). The first two (LFS 1 and 2) formed on a prograding ramp passing upward into a vast platform on which the other five LFS deposited (LFS3 à 7). LFS 1 to 3 (Kinderhookian to lower Osagean) deposited under arid conditions during general subsidence that balanced eustatic falls. Retrograding system tracts are characterized by the development of supratidal to intertidal environment dominated by evaporite precipitations and carbonate dolomitization. Prograding system tracts are mainly mainly by early-lithified grainstones. LFS 4 to 7 (Osagean) deposited under humid conditions (glacial conditions in high-latitudes) that contributed to a decrease in evaporite precipitations and carbonate dolomitization but that involved karstifications on tops of LFS 4 to 7 during uplift episodes and eustatic falls.

▼ Research was conducted among the Hispanic population of Casper, Wyoming for the purpose of determining the extent to which the Hispanic ethnic medical system had been modified in response to local living conditions. Since Casper is relatively remote from areas where there are high concentrations of Hispanics it was reasoned that this isolation would influence the way in which Hispanics adapted to life in a predominantly Anglo community and that, by extension, aspects of the ethnic medical system would undergo significant alterations as a result. Research was carried out by using a mail out survey which was sent to a random sample, by personal interviews and contacts, and by collecting life histories of selected individuals within the Hispanic community. The results indicated that few local Hispanics adhered to the precepts of the ethnic medical system and that those who did were likely to retain only those cures which were easily administered within the home. There were virtually no reported instances of anybody having contracted one of the ethnic illnesses in the recent past. The attenuated nature of the ethnic medical system was accounted for in terms of the local Hispanic community structure and of the local sense of Hispanic group identity. Hispanic community structure is weak due to the small number of Hispanics who reside in Casper, their relatively recent arrival in Casper, their residential dispersal which inhibits the formation of strong neighborhoods, and the absence of formal institutions and organizations which might serve as focal points for community interaction. As a result of this weak community structure ethnic identity is expressed primarily in the domestic sphere rather than the public sphere. The ethnic medical system follows the same pattern, with those elements of the system which require strong community support being cropped and those elements which can be controlled domestically being retained.
