The subject of this PhD is the female dancing choruses in the worship of Pan and the Nymphs, as depicted in statuettes, reliefs, clay reliefs and discs from the Archaic to the Hellenistic era, including some roman copies, which perceive the relevant iconography. The scientific community seems reluctant to interpret the representations of the dance of the Nymphs and Pan, and is interested only in typology, iconographical analysis and the search for pottery workshops. This PhD’s aim is to throw light to any archeological. anthropological, social, or any other aspect of the matter and to comprehend it’s purpose. For this reason the artefacts are placed in their social, cultural and aesthetic context, and dance is understood as a performing Art , a social act and a non verbal mean of communication.Two iconographical types of the theme are recognised, connected with the evolution and spread of the worship of Pan and the Nymphs in the ancient Greek world. The main characteristics of the dance are circularity, the centre of the dance (musician or altar), the structure, the participants (the leader, the first dancer and the last), the gestures, the movements, the drapery, the musical instruments, the musician and its connection to the other participants, the other represented deities, the dancing place and the audience. In search of the inner structure of the dance a comparison is made to the lynx wheel of Boston, which becomes a key to the interpretation of the represented dance theme. The dance is recognised as seductive, in order to attract the worshiped deities, the natural powers and the participants. The dance belongs probably to a circle of female choruses to which the woman in antiquity could participate before marriage, in order to show her gifts and her marriage suitability under the supervision and support of the vegetation gods.

Το θέμα της παρούσας έρευνας είναι οι χοροί γυναικών στη λατρεία του Πανός και των Νυμφών, όπως απεικονίζονται σε συμπλέγματα χορών, ανάγλυφα, πήλινους πίνακες και δίσκους από ιερά και σπήλαια Νυμφών και Πανός, έργα αρχαϊκών ως ελληνιστικών χρόνων, και σε μερικά ρωμαϊκά παραδείγματα που διασώζουν την εικονογραφία. Η επιστημονική κοινότητα χαρακτηρίζεται από διστακτικότητα να προχωρήσει σε περαιτέρω ερμηνείες των παραστάσεων χορού των Νυμφών και το ενδιαφέρον των μελετητών επικεντρώνεται αποκλειστικά στην τυπολογία, την εικονογραφική ανάλυση και την αναζήτηση εργαστηρίων παραγωγής. Η παρούσα έρευνα ξεκινά την έρευνα από το χώρο της αρχαιολογικής επιστήμης και στοχεύει να μελετήσει τις πιθανές κοινωνικές και ανθρωπολογικές, ή όποιες άλλες προεκτάσεις του θέματος, με σκοπό την κατανόηση της εξέλιξης του αρχαίου χορού στη λατρεία των Νυμφών και του Πανός και του σκοπού που εξυπηρετούσε. Για επιτευχθεί αυτό έγινε προσέγγιση της αισθητικής αντίληψης και της οπτικής των ανθρώπων της κάθε εποχής, ένταξη του υλικού στο εκάστοτε κοινωνικό και πολιτιστικό πλαίσιο. Ταυτόχρονα ο χορός αναγνωρίζεται ως κοινωνικό δρώμενο, ως μη λεκτικό μέσο επικοινωνίας, ως παραστατική τέχνη και ως κοινωνικό…
