▼ <p class=Basictextdouble-spaced><span style='mso-fareast-font-family:Calibri'>The
first part of this dissertation employs a three-dimensional elastic-plastic finite
element model of straight-through crack growth to correlate four well-known methodologies
characterizing fatigue crack closure. </span>The compliance offset and the adjusted
compliance ratio (ACR) are experimental methods, whereas the node displacement
and the contact stress methods are numerical approaches. Evolutions of crack closure
from all four methodologies are compared for a numerical model of a single
edge-cracked tension specimen subjected to different levels of constant
amplitude cyclic loading.
<p class=Basictextdouble-spaced>In the second part, a detailed two dimensional
stress analysis is conducted for a single pin-joint under plane stress
conditions. This study investigates the influence of material nonlinearity,
friction, and pre-existing residual stresses from cold-
working process on the
local radial and hoop stress levels around the pin-loaded hole.
<p class=Basictextdouble-spaced>Next, the beneficial influence of cold
working
process is quantified by computing the Mode I stress intensity factors <i
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>K
I</i> for a single radial crack
emanating from a side of a loaded hole. Two different loading configurations are
considered: (a) an open hole in tension, (b) a pin-loaded hole. The stress
intensity factors are computed using the <i style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>J</i>
integral solutions and the weight functions specific to the crack
configuration. The reductions in <i style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>K
I</i>
values due to different levels of cold-
working process are presented for a
range of crack lengths.
<p class=Basictextdouble-spaced>The final part of the research involves a
numerical investigation of an on-line crack compliance
technique that is used for
experimental measurements of residual stress fields along the crack growth path.
A finite rectangular sheet is considered with a single crack emanating from a
side of a central hole. The residual stress field is introduced around the hole
by cold-
working simulation. As part of validation, t<span style='mso-bidi-font-weight:
bold'>he normalized residual stress intensity factors computed using the
on-line crack compliance
technique are compared with those from the <i
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>J</i>-integral approach for the case of elastic
crack growth. The influence of crack tip plasticity on the performance of the on-line
crack compliance
technique is studied by comparing the solutions of the elastic
and elastic-plastic crack growth models.</span>

Temporary work is a way of using the workforce which allows companies to hire and repeal the labour with ease. This thesis reports the social condition of the "unskilled" temporary workers. The ethnological investigation took place over several years through a participative observation, as a temporary worker, within various companies. The reflection belongs to the field of the ethnology of work. The analysis is based on the examination of the working conditions, by paying a particular attention on techniques, by questioning the know-how and their transmission, as well as by observing tools and the more or less incomplete knowledge given to temporary workers by the user companies. This thesis also describes the paths they can follow in the production units; from their sidelining to their inclusion in the work collectives. All these dimensions are crossed and directed by the temporary nature of this type of hiring. Every time a mission ends and every time another one begins, temporary employees have to build other relationships, find other habits and operate new techniques, just as temporary and uncertain, thus losing recent barely integrated automatisms. The specific know-how and the practical adaptations which they develop in front of this situation of indecision are examined in this thesis. It also seems that the productive and subjective mobilization of the temporary workers depends…

▼ About 35 % of the working population in Sweden report that computer use accounts for 50% or more of their total working hours. Among this population approximately 40% of the women and 25% of the men experienced symptoms in the neck and/or upper extremities at least once a week during the preceding 3 month. The overall aim of the studies underlying this thesis was to explore possible associations between working technique and perceived exertion, comfort, biomechanical and psychosocial strain as well as neck and upper extremity symptoms among computer users. Specific research questions addressed were a) Whether working technique was associated with muscle activity, wrist positions and forces applied to the computer mouse, respectively? b) Whether working technique was associated with psychological demands, emotional stress and perceived muscle tension, respectively? c) Whether there were associations between self-rated perceived comfort and observations of workplace layout and between self-rated perceived exertion and working postures. d) Whether working technique perceived exertion and comfort was associated with neck and upper extremity symptoms. The results showed that subjects classified as having a good working technique worked with less muscular load in the forearm (p=0.03) and in the trapezius muscle on the mouse operating side (p=0.02) compared to subjects classified as having a poor working technique. Subjects who reported high psychological demands and perceived muscular tension, respectively, used poorer working technique than subjects who did not perceive this conditions (demands, p=0.03, muscular tension, p=0.02). Moreover, the concordance between ratings of comfort and observations of workplace layout was reasonably good concerning the working chair and the keyboard and good regarding the computer screen and the input device. The concordance between ratings of perceived exertion and observations of working postures indicated good agreement for all measured body locations. This applies to the group that rated poor comfort and high exertion. Regarding the group that rated good comfort and low exertion ratings must be supplemented with observations. Furthermore, the results revealed that high perceived exertion and low comfort were related to an increased incidence of neck, and upper extremity symptoms, while poor working technique was not associated with such a risk. It is concluded that working technique is associated with both biomechanical and psychological strain while no associations could be seen between working technique and the incidence of neck and upper extremity symptoms. Furthermore, high perceived exertion and low comfort are associated with a higher incidence of neck and upper extremity symptoms.

Given the complexity of the business environment, resorting to expertise proves to be essential for the works council to fully exercise its powers and ultimately for the council to contribute to the application of the employee involvement principle. A more realistic approach to expertise enables us to establish that the works council has two types of experts at its disposal: institutional experts (chartered accountants, technical experts, expert consultants and economic experts) and non-institutional experts (some of the works council commissions and the Health, Safety and Working Conditions Committee (CHSCT)). The relations between the works council and experts oscillate between a traditional perspective and an updated perspective. In a very traditional fashion, these two types of experts unevenly act as pathfinders for the works council. They provide the council with information but also process this information when it is necessary. More strangely, however, experts also appear to be involved in the decision-making process as well as in the process of consultation. Beyond the tasks that experts can perform for the works council, two kinds of underlying dynamic can be evidenced by the relations between the experts and the council: a relational dynamic between the various players involved in the…

V empiričnem delu smo s pomočjo deskriptivne in kavzalno-neeksperimentalne metode pedagoškega raziskovanja ugotavljali razlike v uporabi delovnih gradiv, in sicer na neslučajnostnem vzorcu učencev in učiteljev 3. razredov osnovnih šol v ptujskem šolskem okolju.
The Master’s thesis titled Use of working materials in the teaching process of environmental education in the 3rd grade of the primary school level in direct practice within the school environment of Ptuj consists of the theoretical and empirical part. In the theoretical part, we presented Piaget’s theory of cognitive development, basic characteristics of teaching technique and technology in primary school, the syllabus of environmental education and textbook sets for environmental education from the technique and technology perspective, different types of materials and primary school, which participated in terms of the empirical part. In the empirical part we identified differences in the use of working materials with the help of the descriptive and causal-non-experimental method of pedagogical research. The non-circumstantial sample consisted of third grade pupils and teachers of the primary level of education in the school environment of Ptuj. We analysed, if teachers consider the syllabus and its directions in teaching technical content, if teachers plan solely the products, suggested by individual textbook sets, and which working materials are used mostly in the classroom considering the location of the school, seniority of the teacher, education of the teacher and the title, which he acquired through promotion. We obtained the data with the…

▼ The overall aim of this thesis was to explore associations between physicalload, psychosocial and individual factors in visual display unit (VDU)work. Furthermore, the aim was to investigate whether perceived musculartension is a predictor of neck pain among VDU operators. The thesisis based upon five separate studies, two laboratory studies, two fieldstudies and one prospective cohort study.Several different methods were used to assess the physical load. Electromyography(EMG) was used to record muscle activity. Wrist postures andmovements were assessed by means of electrogoniometers. An instrumentedcomputer mouse was used to measure the forces applied to thecomputer mouse. Working technique was assessed with an observationprotocol. Perceived exertion, comfort, mental stress and perceivedmuscular tension were assessed with questionnaires. The results of this work are discussed in relation to a proposed model forVDU work and musculoskeletal symptoms. The first two studies (StudiesI and II) support an association between individual factors (workingtechnique and sex) and the physical load. In Study III we observed thatthe physical load increased as a result of mental stress and increasedproductivity. Besides an increase in muscle activity; increases in the forcesapplied to the computer mouse and increased repetitiveness of wristmovements were also observed. The results from the third study alsosupport an association between psychosocial factors and physical loadthrough increased physical demands. The fourth study (Study IV)supports an association between perceived muscular tension and physicalload and perceived muscular tension is hypothesized to be an early sign ofmusculoskeletal symptoms. In Study V an increased risk of developingneck pain was observed among subjects who perceived high musculartension, even when controlling for job strain, physical exposure and age.It is concluded that the physical load during VDU work is affected bypsychosocial and individual factors as well as physical demands. VDUusers who perceives muscular tension at least a few times per week appearto have an increased risk of developing neck pain.

▼ High prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms/disorders in neck and upper extremities are reported among computer users. Considering the widespread use of information and communication technology (ICT) and mobile phones becoming more and more like computers with small keyboards it is of importance to identify the factors and conditions related to this use, that influence our health. The overall aim of this thesis was to obtain new ergonomic knowledge of the physical exposure associated with the use of information and communication technology with emphasis on small keyboards, computer mice and young adult ICT users. In an interview study with young adult ICT users, where the data analysis was performed with the grounded theory method, was showed that the young adults experienced ICT as a tool for being and acting in the present, to be social, efficient and independent with almost unlimited opportunities but also risks. A comparative experimental study with experienced computer mouse users evaluated muscle activity with surface electromyography and wrist positions/movements with electrogoniometry during work with a
traditional flat computer mouse (pronated hand position) and a vertical computer mouse
(neutral hand position). Work with the vertical computer mouse decreased the muscle activity
in the extensor muscles in the forearm and in the first dorsal interossei muscle, and the ulnar
deviation in the wrist compared to the traditional mouse. An experimental study, with young adults with and without musculoskeletal symptoms from neck and/or upper extremities,
evaluated thumb positions/movements with electrogoniometry, muscle activity with surface electromyography, and working techniques with an observational protocol when text entering on a mobile phone. The young adults with symptoms had lower muscle activity in the abductor pollicis longus and tended to have higher velocity and fewer pauses in the thumb movements compared to those without symptoms. Females had higher muscle activity in the first dorsal interossei and the abductor pollicis longus compared to males. It was more common in the group with symptoms to sit with the head bent forward, to sit without forearm and back support and to enter text with one thumb rather than two compared to those without symptoms. Use of forearm support decreased the muscle activity in the trapezius muscles. Use of one hand grip increased the muscle activity in the extensor muscles in the forearm. High observed velocity in the thumb movements was associated with increased muscle activity in the extensor muscles in the forearm compared to low or moderate velocity.
In conclusion, this thesis shows that computer mouse design has an effect on the muscle activity in the forearm and hand, and on the wrist positions and movements. It also shows that the individual factors working technique and gender have an effect on muscle activity and thumb movements when entering text on a mobile phone. Furthermore, there were differences in working techniques, thumb movements, and muscle activity…
