▼ This collection of papers comprises four sections.
The first section deals with the helminth and arthropod parasites
recovered from a variety of mammalian hosts, and consists of four
chapters. The first chapter deals with the taxonomy of the
parasites of mammalian hosts, where some 15 nematode species were
either newly described, redescribed or descriptions amended, and
the immature stages of an oestrid fly and the adults of two
hippoboscid flies described. The second describes the seasonal
occurrence of arthropod and helminth parasites recovered from
approximately 1 380 antelope, scrub hares, warthogs and bushpigs.
In the third chapter some miscellaneous natural and experimental
findings of helminths in free-living hosts are presented, amongst
others several new host-parasite associations and the proceedings
of symposia, while the fourth chapter deals with the pathology of
natural infections of impalas with Cooperiodes hepaticae, kudus
with Elaeophora sagitta and buffaloes with Parafilaria bassoni. The
second section deals with the parasites of freshwater fishes. In
the taxonomic part of this section, Chapter 1, one trematode genus
is redescribed, and one new trematode species and 14 new nematode
species described. In the second chapter, the seasonal occurrence
of the helminth parasites of approximately 700 freshwater fish
representing 14 species is presented. The third part deals with the
helminths of lizards, snakes and crocodiles, where a new
Paraspirura species, a new Madathamugadia species and some 14 new
species, subspecies and forms of subspecies of the oxyurid genera
Spauligodon, Skrjabinodon, Thelandros and Tachygonetria were
described. A comprehensive host-parasite list of snakes and lizards
is included, as is an equally comprehensive host-parasite list of
the pentastome parasites of crocodiles. In the fourth part, two new
Tetrameres species are described and the population dynamics of
guineafowls and Swainson’s spurfowl discussed. A complete list of
the helminth parasites of guineafowls is listed, together with an
extended host list of these parasites.

▼ In this research, blood samples and ticks from
wild game
animals from nine different research
areas in the Netherlands were examined on the presence of several pathogen groups. The
goal of this research is to map the Dutch tick population and the pathogens that they carry
with them and also to investigate whether
wild game
animals fulfil a reservoir function for tickbound
diseases.
255 ticks, of which 17 came from a fallow-deer and 238 came from roe deer, were sent to the
UCTD by hunters from nine different areas. Furthermore, 68 blood samples, of which one
came from a fallow-deer and 67 came from roe deer, were sent.
The species, gender and stadia of the ticks were first determined. Next, DNA was extracted
from the blood samples and the ticks. The DNA was examined by PCR and RLB for the
presence of several pathogen groups. The following pathogens were particularly searched
for: Babesia/Theileria, Bartonella, Borrelia, Ehrlichia/Anaplasma, Rickettsia and Nicolleia.
The results showed that all the ticks that were used in this research belonged to the species
Ixodes ricinus. 7 out of 255 ticks were nymphs, 41 ticks were male adults and 207 ticks were
female adults. DNA was only extracted from adult ticks.
Results that were obtained from the RLB show the following rates of infection in ticks:
Babesia/Theileria: 9,1% (B. catch-all, B. divergens, B. venatorum, B. canis-2), Bartonella: 19,5% (B.
catch-all, B. schoenbuchensis), Borrelia: 0%, Ehrlichia/Anaplasma: 25,5% (E/A catch-all, E. canis/ovina,
E. schotti, A. marginale, A. phagocytophilum), Rickettsia: 52,8% (R. catch-all, R. helvetica, R. massilae, R.
conorii, R sp. (DnS14/raoultii), Nicolleia: 21,6% (N. catch-all).
In the blood samples from roe deer, the following pathogens were found.
Babesia/Theileria: 70,1% (B. catch-all, B. divergens, B. venatorum), Bartonella: 64,2% (B. catch-all, B.
schoenbuchensis), Ehrlichia/Anaplasma: 22,4% (E/A catch-all, A. marginale, A. phagocytophilum),
Rickettsia: 10,4% (R. catch-all, R. helvetica, R. massilae), Nicolleia: 1,5% (N. catch-all). Roe deer seem
to fulfil a reservoir role for these pathogens.
In the blood sample from the fallow deer, no pathogens were found.
The transmission of Babesia/Theileria from host to ticks seems to be inefficient. Borellia
wasn’t found in blood or in ticks. Antibodies might play a role here. Different tick populations
can show a variable susceptibility for Borrelia species. Therefore, vector competence can
differ within one tick species. Rickettsia, Ehrlichia/Anaplasma, Bartonella en Nicolleia were
commonly found in blood samples as well as in ticks. The transmission from host to tick and
vice versa seems to be efficient.
Conclusions cannot be made regarding results of autopsy by pathological examination.

▼ Serological and molecular studies were conducted on
trypanasomosis in captive wild animals viz, tigers, lions,
leopards, jaguar, elephants and also camels of three different zoos
of Karnataka. The blood smear of 102 wild animals and 11 camels
examined did not reveal organisms. The passive
newlinehaemagglutination test (PHA) was used to screen the serum
samples for specific antibodies. Nine (60%) out of 15 leopards, two
jaguar, 17(58.6%) out of 29 tiger and 32 (71%) out of 45 lions were
positive. The titre of 1:32 and above was considered positive. Out
of 11 elephants 3(27%) were positive and only one (9%) camel was
positive by PHA. The Molecular diagnosis by PCR was attempted using
primer pair for amplification of 488 bp fragment. Five (45%) out of
11 elephants and nine (90.9%) out of 11 camels proved positive
showing amplicon at 488 bp. None of direct blood samples of tigers,
lions, leopards and jaguars showed amplicon at 488 bp but the
T.evansi isolates of canine, leopard and lions maintained in mice
showed amplicon at 488 bp. The nucleotide sequences of these three
isolates showed the similarity and diversity which ranged from 92
to 99.6 and 0.4 to 3.5 percent. The heterogeneity in the virulence
of these isolates was observed, canine isolate newlinewas highly
virulent followed by leopard isolate and it was proved by
phylogenetic tree analysis that both belonged to same cluster. In
contrast, the lion isolate was less virulent and it belonged to
different cluster. The epidemiological studies concluded that host
factors and genetic level adaptability of T.evansi organisms in lab
animals need to be considered and the PCR inhibitory factors in
blood of lion, tiger and leopards is required to be
investigated.

▼ Avian influenza viruses, especially highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses (HPAIV), affect a wide range of species, including humans and have thus become a major concern for veterinary medicine and public health. A HPAIV-H5N1 belonging to clade 2.2, originally from South East Asia, spread across Eurasia and reached Sweden in 2006. Currently the most commonly isolated HPAIV-H5N1 from wild birds belong to clade 2.3.2. There is a growing concern that the H5N1 virus has evolved in such a way that it can be maintained in the wild bird population without causing severe disease. At the same time the role of natural hosts, such as mallards (Anas platyrhynchos), in the epidemiology of avian influenza is an ongoing concern. In order to characterize the natural disease in free ranging birds in Sweden and to assess the pathogenicity of clade 2.3.2 viruses, histopathology, polymerase chain reaction, virus isolation and immunohistochemistry (IHC) were used to investigate lesions and viral tissue targeting of HPAIV-H5N1 in naturally infected tufted ducks (Aythya fuligula) and in tufted ducks experimentally infected with a clade 2.3.2 virus. Since neurotropism is a key feature of HPAIV-H5N1 infection, the encephalitis in 9 wild bird species from the Swedish outbreak was characterized in more detail. Results were compared to mallards infected with a low pathogenic avian influenza virus H1N1. The studies highlight the range and variation of the presentation of the natural disease in wild birds. Experimentally infected ducks were highly susceptible to the current HPAIV-H5N1 clade and showed similar lesions and viral antigen distribution as the naturally infected ducks. The studies suggest that there are several routes of infection and dissemination of the virus including, respiratory, hematogenous and olfactory routes. The respiratory tract is probably the main route of excretion of HPAIV-H5N1 since no viral antigen was found in the intestine. This was in contrast to the experimentally infected mallards which had primarily intestinal replication with minimal lesions. The results highlight the importance of continued investigation of the pathobiology of both low- and HPAIV infections in wild birds which is essential in the understanding of their epidemiology and, in turn, can contribute to the design and implementation of preventive and control measures to protect the health of humans and animals.

▼ The objective of this study was to use molecular
biological reagents (primers targeting different genomic loci) and
methods (PCR and RFLP) to detect and characterize trypanosomes in
cattle,
wild animals and tsetse flies in KwaZulu-Natal, thus
contributing to improved understanding of the genetic diversity of
trypanosome species infecting cattle at the game/livestock
interface in the KwaZulu-Natal Province of South Africa. Primers
based on sequences of different loci in the trypanosome genome were
used in conducting polymerase chain reactions (PCRs) on samples
collected from cattle at 14 diptanks and one commercial farm around
the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve,
wild animals within
Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve and tsetse flies from the commercial
farm, Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve and two other Game Reserves.
Trypanosome isolates were grown under laboratory conditions in
cattle, rodents and culture medium for molecular characterizations.
Overall, a total of 673 cattle, 266 tsetse flies, 141 buffaloes and
6 rhinoceros samples were analyzed. The following observations were
made: two species of trypanosomes are present in KZN; T.congolense
and T. vivax. The two species were found as single and as mixed
infections in cattle. There are two genotypic groups of T.
congolense in KZN; the Savannah- and the Kilifi-type. The two
genotypic groups were found as mixed infections in cattle and in
tsetse flies. Lastly, there are at least five “genomic variants” of
Savannah-type T. congolense in KZN. The infection rate in cattle
ranged from 5.2-91%; in tsetse flies, 11-97.5% and in
wild animals
it was 4.3%. Mixed infection of T. congolense and T. vivax were
only observed in samples from one diptank. Mixed infections of
Savannah- and Kilifi-type T. congolense were observed in samples
from Boomerang commercial farm, and in tsetse flies.

▼ This thesis explores twelfth to fourteenth century attitudes toward continuity and change in medieval stories about the
Wild Man. Can these stories, dealing with the human-animal border, be seen as an expression of discomfort? Could the
Wild Man, like Ovid's poetry, be interpreted as a fascination with hybridity and metamorphosis? Or should we conclude that the
Wild Man both frightens and fascinates in the way horror movies simultaneously repel and attract modern man? To provide a contrast to the half-way creature of the
Wild Man, this work explores the way of presenting
animals in Chaucer’s Parliament of Fowls and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. It then analyses the twelfth century Vita Merlini, and the fourteenth century Sir Orfeo and Ywain and Gawain and argues that these texts, at least partly, express an unease with change and the loss of self.

▼ A Thesis Submitted In Partial Fulfillment of the
Requirements For the Degree of Master of Science-Biology
Human activity has caused wildlife populations worldwide to decline making it imperative for conservation biologists to develop captive breeding and reintroduction programs. These programs, however, have had limited success. Captivity has been shown to select for behavioral
traits that are maladaptive in the wild, such as
inability to recognize optimal food resources, thereby minimizing survival. I developed this study to explore the mechanisms involved with
behavioral change in a systematic and hypothesis-driven framework.
I captured, housed and later tested meadow voles
(Microtus pennsylvanicus) in a foraging test to
measure behavioral differences as a function of environment and time. Animals were housed in either a simple or complex environment for greater
than or less than 1.5 months. Analysis of behavioral data from the foraging test suggests
the complex environment may maintain appropriate
foraging behaviors for sexes and a short time in
a simple environment may maintain appropriate
responses to unpredictability. All subjects along
with a wild cohort were subsequently released
into outdoor enclosures and survival was monitored. Analysis of mark-recapture data suggests environment and time do affect survival
and recapture of individuals differently; animals
housed in complex environments (for less than 1.5
months) maintained similar survival rates as
wild individuals. My study suggests that captive
individuals may benefit from additional complexity
(for short time intervals) within the captive
environment to maintain wild behaviors and
increase survival upon reintroduction.

▼ The drastic decline in the numbers of the five extant species of rhinoceroses world-wide, mainly as a result of poaching, have placed these species in imminent danger of extinction. This emphasizes the need to understand the relationships among the different species of rhinoceros. The advances in molecular biology have allowed the application of DNA-based genetic techniques to address a number of aspects of rhinoceros biology which have both academic interest and practical value to conservation management. There are four aspects to this study: Firstly, restriction endonuclease maps of mitochondrial DNA were constructed to estimate the time of divergence of Diceros bicornis (black rhinoceros) and Ceratotherium simum (white rhinoceros) from their common ancestor. Secondly, a population genetic study of the relationships among four subspecies of D. bicornis. Thirdly, the application of DNA fingerprinting to examine the intra- and inter-population relatedness in D. bicornis populations. Fourthly, a practical application of PCR to identify the origin of an unknown sample of DNA.

▼ Roman epic authors extended, reinvented and created new wild animal representations that stood apart from traditional Greek epic renderings. The treatment of wild animals in seven Roman epics (Virgil’s Aeneid, Lucan’s Civil War, Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Statius’ Thebaid and Achilleid, Valerius’ Argonautica and Silius’ Punica) forms the basis of this thesis, but the extensive study of other relevant works such as Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey and Apollonius’ Argonautica allows greater insight into traditional Greek renderings and throws Roman developments into starker contrast. Initial stages of research involved collection and detailed examination of almost 900 epic references to wild animals. The findings from this preliminary research were analysed in the context of Pliny’s Natural History, Aristotle’s Historia Animalium, and other ancient works that reveal the Greeks’ and Romans’ views of wild animals. The accumulation of such a range of evidence made it possible for patterns of development to become evident. This thesis focuses on the epic representation of animals and considers a number of questions: 1) How Roman epic authors represented animals’ emotions and employed creatures’ thought processes. 2) How Roman epic authors examined the difference between wild and tame animals and manipulated the differences and similarities between humans and animals and culture and nature. 3) How wild animals were aligned with scientific and cultural beliefs that were particular to Roman society. 4) How animals were employed to signify foreign countries and how some epic animals came to be symbolic of nations. 5) How Roman epic authors represented particular aspects of animal behaviours with fresh insight, sometimes ignoring traditional representations and historiographic sources.

▼ This dissertation is about the stories people tell about animals when they don’t do what they are expected to do in contemporary social life. More specifically, it examines three case studies where “wild” animals unexpectedly challenge, transgress, or blur socially defined boundaries in public spaces. Drawing on cultural and interactionist studies of animals and environment, I explore popular animal stories written in news media, social media, and enacted in situ. Each qualitative case study illustrates a moment in time/space where the surprising movements or presence of wild animals causes the cultural categories of wildness/order to breakdown and destabilize. These “surface breaks” of social expectations provide an occasion to tell “animal stories.” Animal stories help people explain how the lives of animals can be allegorical strategies modern people use to communicate and enact moral lessons about the social world.
In the first chapter, I analyze news stories that emerged after Terry Thompson, an eccentric and estranged war veteran, released 54 exotic animals from his private 73-acre farm near Zanesville, Ohio. I suggest that when wild things challenge our taken-for-granted reality, people turn to mythical stories of fantasy to distract themselves from the more obvious social issues at hand. In the second chapter, I reconstruct the story of one feral Rhesus Macaque monkey whose adventure through Tampa Bay inspired extensive reporting in both social media and traditional news media. I suggest that the monkey’s story was akin to a mythical tale of American heroism. As an emblem of “good ol’ American Freedom,” his glorified feats of escape inspired a monkey loving populace to elevate his status to a celebrity-hero, with big government as the evil villain hunting him down. In this way, public debate surrounding the monkey’s life story beckons us to reflect on the role of liberty and repression in American discourse. Lastly, in the third chapter, I draw on ethnographic field notes to show how animals are understood and talked about by visitors in a Manatee Viewing Center in central Florida. I examine how animals challenge social expectations in everyday life situations, and how these breaches lead to situational storytelling and coordinated social activity. I suggest that animals can become messengers of a sacred nature, which is celebrated in the social performance of wildlife viewing.
In conclusion, I follow Levi-Strauss (1966) to argue that animals are “good to think with” because they provide people with an “animal mirror” to look at themselves (Haraway 2008). Furthermore, I indicate that hidden meanings in animal stories inform how people think, feel, and act towards animals in different social contexts, and are thereby reinforced through cultural, institutional, organizational, and personal practices. Animal stories have power because they are often translated into modes of activity and used to realize people’s hopes and fears. In other words, animal stories are alternative forms of wildlife management that act…

▼ As espécies do gênero Trypanosoma parasitam vertebrados de todas as classes (peixes, anfíbios, répteis, aves e mamíferos) e as espécies do gênero Leishmania parasitam mamíferos no Velho e Novo Mundo.

The prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in wild mammals close to urbanized areas should be analyzed to diagnose risks to human and animal health. In Natal-RN State, two protected areas, Parque da Cidade and Parque das Dunas are distinguished by ecological importance. In these protected areas, the presence of domestic cats is constant. The aim was to evaluate and compare the presence of T. gondii by serological testing (MAT) and molecular (B1 gene) in cats and small wild mammals. There was an association between the number of wild seropositive animals in each park (p = 0.018). The Parque da Cidade showed a more alarming situation. The positivity for T. gondii by B1 gene amplification was positive in 16.3% on wild animals analyzed and 8.1% on the cats evaluated in the two protected areas. There was no association between the number of wild animals positive for the B1 gene in each
park (p = 1,00). There is a participation of both groups of animals (wild and domestic) in the local cycle of T. gondii.

▼ Living cells, including spermatozoa, stored under aerobic conditions require oxygen to support their normal metabolism. Excessive levels of metabolites (reactive oxygen species; ROS) can cause cell damage or lipid peroxidation. The ROS and lipid peroxidation can be detected during preparation and cryopreservation of mammalian spermatozoa. The negative effects of ROS can be partially ameliorated by the action of antioxidants. The aims of this thesis were to 1) study the effects of antioxidants on cryopreserved epididymal spermatozoa from the domestic cats and to apply the results from domestic cats to cryopreserved wild felid ejaculated spermatozoa (flat-headed cats; Prionailurus planiceps) in Thailand; 2) detect lipid peroxidation and its effects on post-thaw epididymal cat spermatozoa and 3) evaluate basic seminal characteristics of captive flat-headed cats. In the first study, the semen extender was supplemented with two types of non-enzymatic antioxidants (cysteine and a water soluble vitamin E analogue Trolox). Vitamin E had positive effects on post-thaw sperm motility, progressive motility and membrane integrity. In the second study, centrifuged post-thaw epididymal cat spermatozoa were resuspended in media with or without egg yolk and with or without a transition metal (Fe2+) (which induces lipid peroxidation). Lipid peroxidation was measured by using a lipophilic dye probe (BODIPY581/591 C11). The results demonstrated that BODIPY581/591 C11 could be used to detect lipid peroxidation in cat spermatozoa. This reaction did not significantly increase during incubation unless induced by Fe2+. In the third study, enzymatic antioxidants (catalase, glutathione peroxidase; GPx and superoxide dismutase) were added to the semen extender. Lipid peroxidation was induced after thawing. Supplementation of GPx resulted in positive effects on post-thaw motility, linear motility, mitochondrial activity, membrane and DNA integrity. Although antioxidants had positive effects on sperm quality, the concentration of antioxidants used in this study did not reduce lipid peroxidation. In the last study, the basic seminal traits of captive flat-headed cats were evaluated, as were the effects of adding the vitamin E and GPx to the semen extender for flat-headed cat spermatozoa. The results demonstrated that the captive flat-headed cats were affected by teratozoospermia. The GPx had positive effects on the post-thaw quality of flat-headed cat spermatozoa in a similar manner to domestic cat sperm quality but it did not significantly affect in vtiro heterologous fertility tests. In conclusion, oxidative stress might be one of the factors causing damage during preservation of domestic and non-domestic cat spermatozoa. Post-thaw sperm quality was enhanced by the action of antioxidants.

▼ Modern captive animal institutes (zoos) focus on conservation, entertainment,
education, research and the welfare of the animals. A good indicator that there could be
underlying welfare issues, caused by physical or managerial inadequacies for example, is the
display of stereotypic behaviour. Stereotypic behaviour refers to repetitive or abnormal
actions, such as pacing or self-mutilation. In this study, I firstly examined the prevalence of
stereotypies in captive mammals, and associated risk factors, in three New Zealand zoos (in
Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington) using a questionnaire to examine staff perceptions and
attitudes towards stereotypical behaviour and its mitigation. Secondly, I observed behaviours
of eight species (African wild dogs [AWDs], chimpanzees, giraffes, meerkats, otters, southern
white rhinoceroses, tigers, and zebras) housed at the three institutes to document the
occurrence of stereotypical behaviour. Thirdly, I investigated the efficacy of short-term
enrichment on three target species (chimpanzees, giraffes, AWDs) that displayed stereotypies.
At each institute, zoo staff recognised the occurrence of stereotypic behaviour and
they agreed that such behaviour indicates underlying welfare issues. My observations
confirmed that stereotypical behaviour did occur at each institute, with six of the eight species
displaying stereotypies including pacing, licking inedible objects, begging, circling, head
shaking/tossing, hair picking, body rocking, and coprophagy. Neither meerkats nor rhinos
displayed stereotypies, however, indicating that these species may be better suited to captivity
than the others. The enrichment program I developed for three species (AWDs, giraffes, and
chimpanzees) was partly successful in that the animals engaged with the range of toys and
devices provided, but the frequency of stereotypies was not reduced. Consequently,
enrichment alone cannot be used to treat stereotypical behaviour. My findings are important
for helping to improve the welfare of captive zoo mammals.

▼ The conservation benefits of
animals in captivity
are limited to education and genetic preservation. However, where
species or sub-species are critically endangered, the release of
captive bred
animals into the
wild can be used as a strategy to
supplement existing populations or to form new founder populations.
Cheetahs Acinonyx jubatus born in captivity have no prior
experience of survival in
wild circumstances. Captive bred cheetahs
are currently the greatest source of individuals. This project
worked in conjunction with IUCN reintroduction guidelines and
pre-existing recommendations in an attempt to develop an ideal
methodology of reintroducing captive bred cheetah into the
wild.
Three captive bred cheetahs, one female and two males, were
reintroduced onto Makulu Makete Wildlife Reserve, a predator
proofed reserve in the Limpopo province of South Africa, as part of
an experimental rehabilitation project. The cheetahs had to lose
their homing instinct, be habituated to researchers, become
accustomed to eating venison, chewing skin, infrequent large meals
and strength development within the three months spent in the
enclosures. The cheetahs were habituated to the field researchers
on foot and to research vehicles for ease of monitoring. A soft
release methodology was used to ease the cheetahs into the
environment. Upon release they were tracked twice daily to observe
behavior and interaction with their environment. The duration of
the project was 20 months which includes enclosure time. The
establishment of a home range indicated that the resource need of
the cheetahs was satisfied. Eight habitat types were identified in
the study area and all cheetahs encompassed part of each in their
home range. Though the hunting instinct was present in all the
cheetahs, the appropriate hunting techniques and prey selection had
to be learned overtime. There was no difference between what was
stalked and what was caught. From the observed kills, prey weight
ranged from small <40 kg to medium <160 kg. This weight range
is comparable to
wild cheetahs that select prey within the same
range. Each cheetah hunted every four to five days and consumed
three to five kilograms of meat per day. Nine prey species were
identified, two of which were not detected during direct
observations. In the collection of scat, the trained dog found
approximately a scat per hour while each direct observation by the
researchers took approximately 10 hours. These captive bred
cheetahs had to learn how to hunt and how to select appropriate
prey thus addressing learned behavior versus instinct. Given the
frequency and intensity of injuries sustained and the extensive
human influence in the form of veterinary treatment, the
reintroduction was not a success. However the techniques developed
and modified are relevant for future endeavors‟.

▼ The conservation benefits of
animals in captivity are
limited to education and genetic preservation.

Universidade Federal do Mato Grosso, MT (ZOO-UFMT).
Leishmania sp., compreendendo nove espécies pertencentes a cinco famílias.
thous, Chrysocyon brachyurus e Pseudalopex vetulus.
Do
animais analisados, 47,52% apresentaram o DNA do parasita.
