▼ The issue that this study addresses is pre-service teachers who enter mathematics teacher training programmes with an inadequate knowledge of mathematics. Yet, very often in teacher training institutions more emphasis is placed on pedagogical knowledge at the expense of subject matter knowledge. Consequently, pre-service mathematics teachers exit their teacher training programmes with the same subject matter knowledge as when they first entered. Arising out of this is a severe lack of competence in mathematics that results in poor attainment among South African students, as indicated by both national and international assessment reports. However, it is not clear how mathematics programmes at teacher training institutions address this dilemma. To address this problem, the purpose of this study was to utilise a mixed methods research approach to explore the use of WhatsApp instant messaging as a platform for pre-service teachers’ learning of mathematics. To gather data for the quantitative phase of the study, mathematics proficiency questionnaires were given to 93 pre-service teachers. To gather the qualitative data, observations were undertaken of mathematics interactions between preservice teachers and the tutor through the medium of WhatsApp instant messaging. In addition to observations, semi-structured interviews were conducted with six purposefully selected pre-service teachers. Quantitative data were analysed using statistical tests (t-test), measures of central tendency (means and modes only) and variability (standard deviation, and ranges). The analysis of data revealed a highly significant difference between the post-intervention Mathematics Proficiency Questionnaire (MPQ) scores of the experimental group and those of the control group. The statistical analysis also revealed that the experimental group showed statistically significant higher gains in pre-intervention MPQ as compared to post-intervention MPQ. Observations of mathematics interactions on WhatsApp instant messaging (WIM) were analysed using Russell and Schneiderheinze’s Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) analytical framework while interview transcripts from pre-service teachers were analysed using a narrative analytic framework. These data led to the following themes: peer collaborative mathematics learning, ubiquitous mathematics learning, synchronous and asynchronous mathematics learning and anonymous mathematics learning. ▼ Tässä tutkielmassa tarkastellaan kehumista pikaviestisovelluksessa käydyssä suomenkielisessä ryhmäkeskustelussa. Tutkielman tarkoituksena on selvittää, mitä tämäntyyppisessä vuorovaikutusympäristössä käydyssä keskustelussa kehutaan ja miksi, kenelle kehut osoitetaan, minkälaisin kielellisin rakentein ne muodostetaan ja minkälaisia funktioita niillä on. Tutkimusmetodina käytetään keskustelunanalyysia. Aineisto koostuu vuosina 2015–2016 käydystä 12 naisen välisestä Whatsapp-pikaviestisovelluksen ryhmäkeskustelusta. Keskusteluryhmä koostuu aineiston tallennusaikaan n. 25–35 -vuotiaista naisista, joita yhdistää tanssiharrastus. Naiset ovat keskenään läheisiä ystäviä, ja keskustelun sävy ryhmässä on usein hyvin affektinen. Aineiston analyysi osoittaa, että kehujen kohteena on useimmiten jonkun ryhmäläisen lapsi, jonka kuva on lähetetty keskusteluryhmään. Lisäksi kehutaan tekoja, taitoja, omaisuutta sekä ulkoisia ja sisäisiä ominaisuuksia. Kehut liittyvät usein kuvaan tai videoon, joka on lähetetty ryhmään. Kehujen vastaanottajista on erotettavissa kolme eri luokkaa: yksi ryhmäläinen, koko ryhmä (+/-kehuja) sekä jokin kolmas, ryhmän ulkopuolinen osapuoli. Tyypillisin kehun vastaanottaja on yksi ryhmäläinen, toiseksi eniten kehutaan ryhmän ulkopuolisia kolmansia osapuolia. Kehujen kielellisen rakenteen analyysi osoittaa, että kehut muodostetaan usein hyvin yksinkertaisilla ja toistuvilla rakenteilla. Useimmat kehut ovat lausekemuotoisia, ja ne muodostuvat substantiivista ja siihen liitetystä adjektiivista tai pelkästä adjektiivista. Myös intensiteettimääritteitä käytetään adjektiivien yhteydessä. Aineistosta on erotettavissa myös konstruktioita, jotka toistuvat kehuvuoroissa. Nämä konstruktiot ovat useimmiten luonteeltaan hyvin affektiivisia. Kielellisten kehuvuorojen lisäksi aineistossa on pelkistä emojeista koostuvia kehuvuoroja. Emojien käyttö on muutenkin hyvin runsasta, mikä kertoo myös osaltaan vuorovaikutuksen affektisuudesta. Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan myös kehuvuorojen yhteydessä ilmenevää etunimipuhuttelua sekä puhujaan itseensä kohdistuvia kehuja. Etunimipuhuttelua käytetään mahdollisesti keskustelun asynkronisen luonteen vuoksi kehuvuoroissa ilmaisemaan, että vuoro koskee vielä kyseistä puheena ollutta asiaa, kun aikaa asian käsittelystä keskustelussa on jo kulunut jonkin aikaa. Itseen kohdistuvia kehuja voidaan keskustelussa käyttää kahdella tavalla: positiiviseen itseilmaisuun sekä kehuskeluun. Tutkimus osoittaa, että kehuminen tässä vuorovaikutusympäristössä ja tämän tutkimuksen kaltaisessa keskustelussa on hyvin luontevaa ja affektisuutta osoittavaa toimintaa. Yleisen mielikuvan mukaan suomalaiset eivät perinteisesti ole esittäneet kehuja toisille ihmisille eivätkä kehuneet itseään, mutta suomalainen keskustelu- ja kehumiskulttuuri näyttäisi olevan murroksessa.

La convergence entre les technologies de l’information et de la communication et l’informatique a pour conséquence l’atténuation des frontières spatio-temporelles. La révolution induite par la téléphonie mobile trouve son paroxysme dans le smartphone, une génération de téléphones intelligents qui intègrent des fonctions propres à l’informatique, dont les applications. Grâce à celles-ci, la communication mobiquitaire devient un fait quotidien. L’application gratuite de messagerie instantanée WhatsApp apparait en 2009, et connaît un succès fulgurant en Espagne. Son utilisation provoque l’émergence d’un nouveau genre discursif : la « conversation ouatsap ». Ce travail de recherche prend appui sur une étude de cas à partir de laquelle seront analysées les manifestations linguistiques et pragmatiques de la confiance interpersonnelle et interculturelle lors des conversations ouatsap menées dans le contexte professionnel du secteur viticole. Nous analyserons les manifestations de celles-ci sur un corpus de conversations ouatsap authentiques menées entre une entrepreneure en France et trois de ses partenaires commerciaux espagnols.

The convergence between information and communication technologies and informatics technologies has, as a consequence, a weakening of spatial-temporal boundaries. The ensuing revolution brought about by mobile phones finds its paroxysm with smartphones, a generation of intelligent telephones which integrates functions of informatic technologies such as the applications. Thanks to them mobiquitous communication has become an everyday reality. The free application of instant messages WhatsApp first appeared in 2009, and had a dazzling effect in Spain. It’s use led to the appearance of a new discursive gender: the ouatsap conversation. A case study in which the linguistic and pragmatic characteristics of interpersonal and intercultural trust during ouatsap conversations in a professional context in the winemaking industry underlies this research. We will analyse their characteristics in a corpus of genuine ouatsap conversations that took place between a French company and three of its Spanish commercial partners.

▼ The world has become increasingly “hyperconnected.” Hyperconnectivity refers not only to the means of communication and interaction, but it also brings people (and things) together from anywhere and at any time. In today’s world, citizens are increasingly sharing information via the so-called Over-the Top services (OTT) and virtual reality tools, rather than from the front porch. This hyperconnectivity has given rise to a globalised “168” world (24 × 7 = 168), where the work day continues around the clock. A plausible reason for the popularity of OTTs is that people no longer want to be passive ‘spectators’; instead, they want to be interactive, co-create content, discuss, modify usergenerated content and connect with organisations. The above illustrates that media culture provides the materials to create identities into which individuals insert themselves in contemporary techno-capitalist societies, and which is producing a new form of global culture. But media culture is also a high “techno-culture”, deploying the most advanced technologies that are of value to business or professional life. This study examines how black employees in Parliament interact and make sense of the text (WhatsApp) as an OTT service. An OTT is any application or service that provides a product over the Internet and bypasses traditional distribution. Services that come over the top are most typically related to media and communication and are generally, if not always, lower in cost than the traditional method of delivery. The research analyses how and why employees use and integrate WhatsApp into their everyday lives, asks what WhatsApp means to these employees, and questions whether the use of WhatsApp is prohibited by policies of the institution or whether its usage has been ‘naturalised’. The study also looks at the key provisions of Constitution of Republic of South Africa, relevant laws and policies governing the ICT ecosystem; how the sector has evolved and is regulated and managed as well as significant policy and regulatory debates which have emerged since the introduction of OTT services. ▼ In the coalition agreement (May 2018) the municipality of The Hague has expressed that they want to support neighborhood WhatsApp groups (NWAG’s). The goal of providing support is to increase citizen participation and to improve neighborhood safety and safety feeling. Currently, there is no city-wide approach for supporting NWAG’s. So, the question is: how to set up a support structure for the long-term success of NWAG’s? This is answered in this design project and supported by the research conducted throughout the project. To set up a successful support structure, insight were acquired into the desires for support and the contributions of support given in other municipalities. The difficulty for police and municipality is that they have many assumptions regarding giving support to NWAGs. Even though these assumptions are either nonexistent or resolvable in reality, they hold back the police and municipality in starting to give (parts of) the support residents desire. The research also showed that support is very desirable for residents. The number of residents starting and maintaining a NWAG increases when any form of support is given. Residents want to receive tools for starting a NWAG and want to exchange information with the police and municipality about their neighborhood. Residents find it evident and obvious that the municipality would support NWAG’s in this way, and do not understand why this is not the case yet. The coordinator of a NWAG has a central role, as he manages the NWAG. Therefore, the design goal was to create support for coordinators. The principle of making a ward WhatsApp group (WWAG) is used, because that group contains all coordinators in a ward, a municipal official and (ward) police. The focus is on helping residents to start a NWAG, to connect coordinators to the WWAG and to outline what the WWAG should do. Based on the user research, the following design guidelines were set up for providing support to coordinators: 1. Keep information as well as activities about safety-related topics. 2. Present information and activities straightforward, so that the purpose is evident. 3. Aim to include coordinators in decision making about WWAG setup and execution of certain tasks that maintain the WWAG. 4. Do not impose obligations for coordinators to become a member of the WWAG. 5. Make clear agreements between all WWAG members for mutual understanding. 6. Show appreciation for coordinators in person. 7. Provide practical tools that support coordinators, mainly in the starting phase. The created support service consists of twelve touchpoints. Touchpoints are means to create interactions between coordinators and the support service. The touchpoints show the minimum means the municipality should use to provide support to NWAG’s. The support service helps residents to contribute to a safe neighborhood to live in themselves. ▼ The central research question this thesis explores is whether or not the availability of new social media alters the concepts of gendered personhood in working-class neighbourhoods on the Cape Flats. The arguments I will present all speak to my central argument that there is not only a relationship between “good” daughterhood and new social media, but that this relationship consists of young women in Cape Town namely Eersteriver, using their internet enabled cell-phones as a means of exploring the social and virtual realm without putting their title of a “good” or “respectable” girl at risk. I will incorporate comparative arguments from different bodies of academic literature which speak to the key question and arguments presented in this thesis so as to provide a global perspective. A brief socioeconomic history of the area will also be included in this thesis so as to provide some social context for my research. This thesis shows how young women of Eersteriver use the freedom, privacy and anonymity that they believe the internet and social media freely offers, to push the boundaries of good daughterhood and respectability. This thesis further demonstrates how social media have changed young women’s understanding of what social interaction is as well as their “doing” intimacy. I further show that their very interaction via their internet enabled cell-phones is a social form of gift giving. This research is particularly important because it is located at the intersection between gender issues and the study of new social media. This study explores how new gendered subjectivities emerge from performances and representations of personhood in new social media such as WhatsApp and Facebook, and how understandings of “good” daughterhood and respectability are altered and thus crafted into these practices. Literature in this area of research is still on the rise, so I am confident that this study will make a valuable contribution to this growing body of literature which speaks to young women and new ICTs. [pt] Os recentes avanços tecnológicos nas áreas de telecomunicação e informática têm proporcionado o surgimento de vários instrumentos novos de comunicação social. Essas inovações criaram as chamadas redes sociais e diversos veículos móveis de comunicação instantânea. O presente estudo visa identificar as razões pelas quais o aplicativo WhatsApp tem se destacado neste setor, em particular no Rio de Janeiro. Para o alcance desse objetivo foi realizada uma pesquisa bibliográfica e pesquisas de campo envolvendo quatro grupos focais. O método tem como base a construção de mapas perceptivos com uma abordagem qualitativa. Conforme os participantes classificam, em conjunto, os doze veículos de comunicação selecionados, relatam seus pontos de vista em relação a cada um deles, revelando aos poucos as razões pelas quais utilizam um ou outro. Uma vez alcançado certo grau de consenso entre os participantes, eles foram submetidos a um questionário para identificar o perfil demográfico do respondente e reforçar questões específicas sobre a utilização do WhatsApp. Os resultados sugerem que, além de ser percebido como um instrumento de comunicação completo, no que tange sua capacidade de troca de texto, som e imagens, esse aplicativo é o mais adotado por ser o mais conhecido e utilizado por seus conhecidos, sejam amigos, familiares ou colegas de trabalho. A resposta sobre como o WhatsApp se tornou o aplicativo mais utilizado pela sociedade em geral, no entanto, requer novas pesquisas.

[en] Recent technological advances in telecommunications and information technology have provided the emergence of several new instruments of social communication. These innovations have created the so-called social networks and various mobile vehicles of instantaneous communication. This study aims to identify the reasons why WhatsApp has excelled in this sector, particularly in Rio de Janeiro. To achieve this objective a bibliographic research and pieces of field research involving four focus groups were conducted. The method is based on the construction of perceptual maps by using a qualitative approach. As participants classify the twelve selected media outlets, they report their views in relation to each of them, revealing gradually the reasons why use one or the other. Once achieved a degree of consensus among the participants they are submitted to a questionnaire that identifies their demographic profile and reinforces specific questions about using WhatsApp. The results suggest that, in addition to being perceived as a complete communication tool. regarding its text, sound and images exchange capacity, this instrument is the most widely adopted by their acquaintances, either friends, member of family or co-workers. The answer on how WhatsApp has become the most widely used application, however, requires further studies.

▼ The world has become increasingly “hyperconnected.” Hyperconnectivity refers not only to the means of communication and interaction, but it also brings people (and things) together from anywhere and at any time. In today’s world, citizens are increasingly sharing information via the so-called Over-the Top services (OTT) and virtual reality tools, rather than from the front porch. This hyperconnectivity has given rise to a globalised “168” world (24 × 7 = 168), where the work day continues around the clock. A plausible reason for the popularity of OTTs is that people no longer want to be passive ‘spectators’; instead, they want to be interactive, co-create content, discuss, modify usergenerated content and connect with organisations. The above illustrates that media culture provides the materials to create identities into which individuals insert themselves in contemporary techno-capitalist societies, and which is producing a new form of global culture. But media culture is also a high “techno-culture”, deploying the most advanced technologies that are of value to business or professional life. This study examines how black employees in Parliament interact and make sense of the text (WhatsApp) as an OTT service. An OTT is any application or service that provides a product over the Internet and bypasses traditional distribution. Services that come over the top are most typically related to media and communication and are generally, if not always, lower in cost than the traditional method of delivery. The research analyses how and why employees use and integrate WhatsApp into their everyday lives, asks what WhatsApp means to these employees, and questions whether the use of WhatsApp is prohibited by policies of the institution or whether its usage has been ‘naturalised’. The study also looks at the key provisions of Constitution of Republic of South Africa, relevant laws and policies governing the ICT ecosystem; how the sector has evolved and is regulated and managed as well as significant policy and regulatory debates which have emerged since the introduction of OTT services. ▼ The interdependence of members of a group is fostered in the interactive experience of language. In a deep mediatized group, in which the exchange of ideas can take place through frames of relevance, the empirical aspect of understanding it by transposing the content was left to form. The thesis investigates the interactions of the actors of a WhatsApp group that, linked to American diplomatic policy, propagates notions of startup entrepreneurship in Brazil. The media research triangulation method was instrumentalized, with quantitative and qualitative studies based on hidden participant observation through a journal opened to the group members. The thesis considers that technical functionalities of the representation of writing, speech, and gestures, through mediatized interaction, symbolize intentions and emotions, forge the representations of the actors and script the narratives of a group in an informal network – which was considered as a link to a media policy. Empirically comparable with the language medium in face-to-face communication, the technical functionalities of the utterance device, metaphorically, figured the assumption of measuring a mediatized face-to-face communication. By applying the studies of Erving Goffman’s frames of interaction, the human and non-human embrace the complexity of deep mediatized and “dataficated” interactions, as the thesis theoretically explores, intermingling in the German research network called Communicative Figurations. By interaction anchorages, the fact that the following technical functionalities are markers of openings and closings, internal parentheses of a conversational theme was categorized: notifications, writing characters, technical images, audios and symbols, as well as the different temporalities of the sequential order of interaction. The mapping of links of effervescence, modeling, recognition and temporality of an interaction oppose that frames of relevance can propose categories of adhesions and interlacing in groups about a supposed public opinion, urgent to new empirical mechanisms. ▼ Esta dissertação teve por objetivo identificar qual a contribuição do aplicativo WhatsApp no processo de ensino aprendizagem no Ensino Superior, de acordo com a visão dos professores do Instituto de Natureza e Cultura da Universidade Federal do Amazonas. Para realizar este trabalho, começamos com uma revisão teórica buscando fundamentar e compreender as tecnologias da informação e da comunicação e sua relação com a educação, e também assim compreender a sua evolução nos últimos vinte anos, bem como o papel do professor, das redes sociais, especialmente o Facebook, e do WhatsApp no Ensino Superior. A partir da revisão teórica, foram construídas categorias que tornaram-se os pontos norteadores para a elaboração dos questionários que foram aplicados com os docentes. Para a interpretação e análise dos dados, foi utilizada a análise de conteúdo, com foco na análise categorial,. Em relação à visão dos professores quanto à perspectiva do uso do WhatsApp e como utilizam o aplicativo em sala de aula, constatou-se que, principalmente a utilização, se dá para o trabalho e para interagir e se comunicar com os alunos, amigos e familiares. Pelo uso já estar inserido no cotidiano dos estudantes, ele é mais facilmente utilizado em sala de aula. As principais estratégias utilizadas pelos professores para envolver os alunos no uso educativo do WhatsApp em sala de aula são os fóruns de discussão, o compartilhamento de material didático, a disponibilização de conteúdo da disciplina, a criação de grupos e o acompanhamento do aluno. Utilizando estas estratégias, pode vir a sobrar mais tempo para que sejam feitas discussões e interações entre os professores e os alunos, possibilitando maiores reflexões e proporcionando assim uma aprendizagem mais colaborativa. Quanto à avaliação do WhatsApp em sala de aula, os professores avaliam a experiência de utilizar o aplicativo como positiva. Seu uso demonstra ser uma nova forma de os professores se relacionarem com seus alunos, facilitando a comunicação e interação e trazendo inovações ao processo de ensino-aprendizagem, gerando inclusive mais vínculo e confiança entre eles. Uma das barreiras levantadas pelos professores é a questão da distração que o uso do WhatsApp pode provocar quando utilizado em sala de aula, bem como a falta de internet de qualidade na universidade. Outra lacuna importante que foi constatada é a formação dos professores para o uso do WhatsApp, demonstrando que existe resistência ainda ao uso dessa tecnologia. Dessa maneira, tendo uma formação deficiente ou quase nula para a utilização deste aplicativo em sala de aula, os professores sentem-se inseguros e continuam com suas práticas tradicionais de ensino. Como conclusão, a partir de toda a revisão teórica e análise de dados feita nesta dissertação, é possível afirmar que esse aplicativo possui muito potencial didático e grande capacidade de contribuir na melhoria do processo de ensino-aprendizagem no Ensino Superior. ▼ O presente estudo teve o objetivo de investigar a produção argumentativa por pós-graduandos em contextos de debates críticos em sala de aula e através do WhatsApp. Considerando a argumentação como sendo a atividade cognitivo-discursiva em que os sujeitos desenvolvem movimentos discursivos buscando justificar seus pontos de vista e consideram perspectivas opostas (LEITÃO, 2007). Assim, este estudo foi desenvolvido a partir da participação de 12 alunos na Disciplina de Estudos da Cognição (DEC), um componente curricular de uma pós-graduação em psicologia de uma universidade brasileira que utilizou como recurso pedagógico o moldelo do debate crítico (MDC). Nesse modelo, adaptado para a sala de aula por Leitão (2012), cujo objetivo é desenvolver competências argumentativas e o pensamento crítico-reflexívo, uma disciplina de graduação foi dividida em ciclos temáticos sobre os assuntos curriculares e seus alunos foram separados em três bancadas em que duas delas seriam debatedoras (iriam defender pontos distintos de uma pergunta feita sobre esse tema curricular) e uma seria uma bancada de juízes (iriam avaliar o debate entre essas equipes). Cada ciclo tinha uma estrutura semelhante sendo dividido em (1) introdução ao tópico; (2) retomada do tópico (em que, com ajuda de monitores, os alunos eram preparados para o debate; (3) debate e (4) fechamento. Na DEC houve três ciclos temáticos, baseados no proposto em Leitão (2012) sobre o MDC adaptado para a sala de aula, sendo que nos ciclos 2 e 3 o debate ocorreu via WhatsApp e o debate do ciclo 1 em sala de aula. Após a transcrição dos debates, dois deles (o primeiro e o segundo) foram selecionados para a realização de estudos de caso. A análise dos debates foi feita com base na unidade de análise triádica de Leitão (2000) que a propõe como unidade mínima de análise da argumentação sendo composta por argumento, contra-argumento e resposta ao contra argumento que, quando analisadas em conjunto, podem elucidar acerca do processo argumentativo e da revisão de perspectivas própria desse processo. Assim, ao longo do debate buscou-se reconhecer e compreender os tipos de argumentos, contra-argumentos, respostas aos contra-argumentos e informações que emergiram ao longo do debate conforme Walton (1996), Kuhn et al. (2009), Besnard e Hunter (2008) e Leitão (2007). Com as análises do debate 1 (realizado em sala de aula) e do debate 2 (via WhatsApp) notou-se que houve uma intensificação do uso dos argumentos de autoridade e das informações objetivas no segundo debate, representando assim um desenvolvimento no que se refere à produção argumentativa, visto que, no contexto acadêmico, como foi no caso da DEC, são privilegiados argumentos de autoridade embasados em informações objetivas. ▼ Los emoticonos son unas populares representaciones esquemáticas de expresiones faciales o pequeñas imágenes que se añaden a los mensajes electrónicos. Tras una revisión la investigación sobre la comunicación mediada por ordenador (CMO) y los emoticonos, el trabajo recorre la historia de los emoticonos, las diferentes tipologías y discute su actual percepción y difusión. Desde el punto de vista empírico, el trabajo se basa en una encuesta exploratoria y en el análisis de un corpus. La encuesta fue respondida por una muestra de conveniencia de 226 personas. La encuesta abordó algunos aspectos poco estudiados en la investigación sobre emoticonos, como por ejemplo las herramientas en las que se utilizan más las caritas, los contextos de uso preferentes y las posibles razones del gran éxito de los emoticonos gráficos. También analizamos el grado de acuerdo que mostraban los encuestados con respecto al significado que atribuirían a un conjunto de emoticonos, para valorar cómo podría funcionar su interpretación y la posible emergencia de significados convencionales. El corpus se compone de mensajes de WhatsApp, una popular aplicación de mensajería instantánea para smartphones. La metodología de análisis intenta combinar dos aproximaciones metodológicas: el análisis del discurso mediado por ordenador (Herring, 2004), que aplica conceptos lingüísticos al análisis de corpus digitales, y la multimodalidad, una perspectiva de estudio reciente, que intenta dar una visión global de la comunicación, integrando incluso materiales no lingüísticos (Adami, 2016; Jewitt, 2009). Los resultados confirman la popularidad de los emojis, es decir la variante gráfica de los emoticonos, una predilección por imágenes que representan caritas y, en menor medida, gestos bastante convencionales, y el uso preferente de los emoticonos en situaciones informales y contextos positivos. Las funciones de los emoticonos pueden ser muy variadas (cortesía, decoración del mensaje, señalar un tono informal, sustituir palabras, gestionar la conversación, etc.) y su uso raramente provoca malentendidos. En el trabajo, además, hemos podido valorar aspectos sociales y culturales relacionados con los emoticonos, WhatsApp y la cultura digital en general. ENGLISH ABSTRACT : This study was undertaken to promote parent involvement in the Xhosa-speaking learners' learning process. The current trend is that Xhosa-speaking parents are increasingly enrolling their children in Afrikaans medium schools. These children are therefore taught in a second or sometimes a third language. These parents are not always informed about the negative effects that it have on their children (Hooijer en Fourie, 2009). The educational challenges posed to teachers are thus significant. Xhosa-speaking parents are not always able to help their children with their homework because they have no or limited Afrikaans language skills. The study was undertaken to investigate how parents could support their homework participation in a homework program, with knowledge and skills. The overall purpose of the study was to promote the involvement of the Xhosa-speaking parents in their childrens learning through WhatsApp. It was also to get new insights about the educational use of WhatsApp. Participating action research was chosen as the most effective research design for this study because it provides the opportunity to actively involve parents in the education of their children. The research population was Xhosa-speaking parents whose children are Grade 1 learners at an Afrikaans medium school. Data was obtained through semi-structured interviews with participants, an individual interview with the teacher, participation in a homework program with interactions on a WhatsApp group and the collection of artefacts. With the three forms of data collection, I was able to move within the personal space of the participants in order to investigate the context of their living world. The findings indicate that although parents want to support learners, they are limited to Afrikaans language skills and the support is therefore inadequate. By using WhatsApp as support for these parents, it has made an excellent contribution to helping learners with homework as well as the involvement of the parents. The educator and parents state that there was definitely an educational improvement in the Xhosa-speaking learners' achievements.

AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING : Hierdie studie was onderneem om ouerbetrokkenheid by die Xhosa-sprekende leerders se leerproses te bevorder. Die huidige tendens is dat Xhosa-sprekende ouers hul kinders toenemend in Afrikaans medium skole inskryf.
