▼ Service oriented architecture (SOA) and web services make it possible to construct rich and complex distributed systems which operate at internet scales. However, the underlying design principles of SOA can lead to management problems for processes over web services. This thesis identifies several potential problems with the management of processes over web services, and proposes the use of explicit context as a possible solution. The available options are explored, and the WS-Context specification is implemented and evaluated. The SOA design principles of loose coupling, interaction at an interface, autonomy, and composablity can lead to management problems for processes over web services. Processes over web services where one composite service invokes other composite services which in turn invoke other composite services can lead to complex invocation trees. These invocation trees may be different at different times due to the shifting effect of loose coupling, as new services are swapped in to replace those in previous invocations. In such an environment how well can we define the interface of the top level service in a static document such as a WSDL? Because there is a separation between the ultimate service consumer, and the ultimate service provider how can the service consumer correctly assign fault when a service fails? When concurrency is used, and encouraged, how can we deal with the inevitable race conditions and deadlock? In distributed systems where portions of processes execute on systems beyond our organizational control, how can we pause, or kill these processes? Many of these systems model long-running business processes. How do we communicate changes in process requirements? The use of an explicit context is a potential solution to these types of problems. The abstraction context provides an environment in which the process participants can describe their requirements, query those of other process participants, and react to changes in the environment. A sample context server, based on the WS-Context specification, was implemented using the Erlang language. The sample context server provides the basic operations required to manage and store contextual information about a process. The sample context server was evaluated to determine the cost of employing a context as part of a web service based software system. The performance of the sample server was also evaluated. Test were conducted on the time costs of the basic operations of the context server, and they were found to have a constant time cost. The operations for getting and setting the contents of the context were found to have a time cost dependant on the size of the context. The cost of propagating the context along a chain of service invocations was tested and found to have an overhead which increased linearly with the length of the service invocation chain. ▼ Web services transactions have some unique characteristics. A Web transaction may be composed of a number of individual Web services, executed across multiple loosely coupled autonomous systems. Each Web service may be executed on an independent system belonging to an independent provider. There raises the question whether Web transactions can and should be maintained as a single business unit in a similar way to how transactions are maintained in classical database systems. In classical database systems, the transaction management protocol and mechanism are constrained by the primary properties of atomicity, consistency, isolation and durability (ACID). These ACID properties are the cornerstone of maintaining data integrity in transaction management. However, ACID properties were meant for centralised systems and are better suited for short transactions. Unlike short transactions, Web services transactions may be long-running; they can take hours or even days depending on the application. Composing certain actions from loosely coupled distributed business processes across multiple distributed applications is one of the essentials of Web services transactions. The classic ACID model, which is tightly coupled, is therefore seen as too rigid to support all the requirements of the new Web transactions model. The research proposes a system that increases throughput while maintaining the consistency and correctness required by the particular applications that are using the model; the system is known as AuTrA (Adaptable user-defined Transaction relaxed Approach). AuTrA allows relaxation of each ACID property. The model is adaptable to meet different situations with different characteristics. For instance, in some cases it will be appropriate to relax atomicity, whereas in others it may be appropriate to relax isolation and atomicity while maintaining consistency. The research explores how transaction support for Web services can be customised to suit the needs of varying applications and result in improved service. The AuTrA prototype has been implemented. The experimental results show that the AuTrA application is able to support the basic features of Web services transaction management, allowing users to specify their correctness requirements, and it can increase throughput of transactions in models in a flexible and reliable manner. Additional facilities allow users to specify application-specific, non-ACID criteria that can increase throughput. Safeguards have also been implemented to prevent execution of inappropriate user specifications, such as relaxation of properties that may damage data integrity. AuTrA can be used as a tool by software developers who need to compose applications from independent Web services and who wish to build applications which result in improved performance while maintaining application-required consistency.

Les travaux de recherche menés autour de la description de services Web utilisent de plus en plus des modèles sémantiques pour fournir une représentation interprétable automatiquement. Toutefois, nous avons décelé des lacunes dans les approches sémantiques actuelles qui engendrent ambiguïté et non pertinence au niveau de l’appariement et de la découverte de services Web. Pour remédier à ces lacunes nous proposons des contributions à la description et à la découverte de services Web sémantiques. En ce qui concerne la description de services, nous avons défini un langage basé sur une recommandation W3C. En plus d’une annotation métier sémantique des éléments d’un service, notre principale contribution à la description sémantique consiste à spécifier la nature de ces annotations en utilisant une ontologie technique que nous avons définie. Cette ontologie met en relation plusieurs concepts sémantiques de services Web que nous avons identifiés dans des approches existantes et intègrera d’autres concepts qu’on définira ultérieurement sans pour autant modifier notre langage de description ou nos techniques d’appariement associées. Nous avons également défini un algorithme d’appariement entre une requête de service et les descriptions des services publiés. Cet algorithme se base sur un appariement entre éléments d’une requête et un service publié et trois techniques d’agrégation des résultats d’appariements élémentaires. L’algorithme tire avantage de la description sémantique que nous avons définie. Il a été mis en œuvre dans un annuaire de services Web sémantiques et a été également comparé aux algorithmes de référence. Les expérimentations montrent clairement l’efficacité de notre approche en termes de temps de réponse et de précision

Researches conducted around Web service description use more and more of semantic models to provide an automatically interpretable representation. However, we identified gaps in current approaches that generate semantic ambiguity and impertinence at Web service matching and discovery. To address these shortcomings we propose contributions about semantic Web service description and discovery. As for the Web services description, we have defined a language based on a W3C Recommendation. In addition to a semantic business annotation of service components, our main contribution about the semantic description is to specify the nature of these annotations using a technical ontology that we have defined. This ontology merges several semantic concepts of web services that we identified in existing approaches and may include other concepts that can be defined later without changing our description language or our matching techniques. We also defined a matching algorithm between a service request and published service descriptions. This algorithm is based on matching between elements of a service request and descriptions of published services. A SOA está se tornando uma abordagem difundida no desenvolvimento de sistemas. Em sistemas maiores onde se utiliza SOA pode ocorrer problemas de alta demanda, que podem ser resolvidos com arquiteturas distribuídas como clusters. Esta dissertação apresenta a proposta de uma nova arquitetura para distribuição de requisições em clusters de web services. A arquitetura proposta tem foco na distribuição flexível de requisições, possibilitando o emprego de políticas diversificadas, estas voltadas a diferentes objetivos, aplicações e plataformas. A arquitetura também propõe trabalhar de forma dinâmica, possibilitando decisões baseadas na coleta de estado dos elementos que compõem a estrutura de atendimento. A transparência, do ponto de vista do cliente, também é tratada na arquitetura. Os testes da arquitetura foram realizados através de um protótipo que a implementa. O protótipo instancia os objetivos propostos na arquitetura, apresentando ganhos de desempenho em relação à solução existente atualmente. A flexibilidade das políticas de distribuição é destacada através da construção de uma política, cujo objetivo é melhorar a eficiência no consumo de energia de clusters. Dentre as contribuições do trabalho está a criação de uma nova arquitetura de software que atua como facilitadora para a criação de políticas de distribuição de requisições mais eficiente para web services

SOA is becoming a widespread approach to develop systems. High demand problems may appear in huge systems where SOA and web services are used. This problems can be solved by means of distributed architectures like clusters. This work presents the proposal of a new architecture for request distribution in web service clusters. The proposed architecture provides flexible request distribution. It allows the use of several policies, these related to different objectives, applications and platforms. The architecture\'s dynamic feature enables decisions based on states of the cluster\'s elements, in a transparent way, under clientsṕoint of view. The architecture was tested using a prototype that implements the proposed ideas in this work. The objectives of the proposal were reached by the prototype and still shown performance improving in many cases, when comparing to an existing solution. The use of a novel policy, related to energetic efficiency for clusters, is also shown on the experiments related to flexibility. Among architecture\'s contributions is a novel software architecture that acts as a facility to create and to test more efficient web services policies

Atualmente a Integração de Aplicações Empresariais (EAI) desempenha um papel fundamental no cenário de integração de sistemas corporativos. Isso pode ser feito de diferentes formas, como por exemplo, por meio do compartilhamento de acesso às bases de dados ou trabalhando-se com Web Services, em que um serviço é disponibilizado por um sistema e pode ser chamado por outro sistema a ser integrado. Essas duas soluções estão sendo empregadas com sucesso, mas ambas apresentam vantagens e desvantagens que devem ser analisadas. Assim, este trabalho tem como objetivo primeiramente efetuar uma comparação entre essas duas abordagens de integração (tomando como base a norma ISO-IEC 9126-1) por meio de uma revisão bibliográfica complementada por uma revisão sistemática e relatos da experiência profissional da autora deste trabalho e da sua orientadora. Com o intuito de validar esta comparação, foi feito um estudo experimental, cujo objetivo do experimento foi avaliar a melhor abordagem para se realizar uma integração de aplicações empresariais: EAI-Dados e EAI-WS no que diz respeito ao esforço necessário para a implantação de cada uma. Assim, a avaliação foi realizada para responder à seguinte questão: Em termos de tempo de desenvolvimento e código produzido, é mais fácil realizar EAI-WS ou EAI-Dados? Finalmente, foram propostos cinco padrões para EAI, com o objetivo de auxiliar desenvolvedores com problemas similares de integração de aplicações. Esses padrões podem ser reusados em diversos contextos de integração, obedecendo às regras de negócios específicas a serem consideradas no momento da integração, e agilizando a modelagem da solução por meio da instanciação do padrão mais adequado a cada situação

Nowadays, Enterprise Applications Integration (EAI) performs a fundamental function in the scenery of enterprise systems integration. This can be done in different forms, for example by sharing the database access or working with Web Services, in which a service is provided by the system and can be called by other systems to be integrated. Those two solutions are being applied successfully, even though both present advantages and disadvantages that must be analyzed. Thus, the goal of this work is first to compare those two integration approaches, (Based on the standard ISO-IEC 9126-1) through a bibliographical review complemented by a systematic review and professional reports from the author of this work and her supervisor. In order to confirm this comparison, an experimental study was done, which resulted in quantitative answers about the best approach to perform systems integration: EAI-Data and EAI-WS which refer to effort required to deploy each. Thus, the assessment was conducted to answer the following question: In terms of development time and code produced, is easier to perform EAI-WS or EAI-Data? ▼ Web service technology is increasingly being used to build various e-Applications, in domains such as e-Business and e-Science. Characteristic benefits of web service technology are its inter-operability, decoupling and just-in-time integration. Using web service technology, an e-Application can be implemented by web service composition — by composing existing individual web services in accordance with the business process of the application. This means the application is provided to customers in the form of a value-added composite web service. An important and challenging issue of web service composition, is how to meet Quality-of-Service (QoS) requirements. This includes customer focused elements such as response time, price, throughput and reliability as well as how to best provide QoS results for the composites. This in turn best fulfils customers’ expectations and achieves their satisfaction. Fulfilling these QoS requirements or addressing the QoS-aware web service composition problem is the focus of this project. From a computational point of view, QoS-aware web service composition can be transformed into diverse optimisation problems. These problems are characterised as complex, large-scale, highly constrained and multi-objective problems. We therefore use genetic algorithms (GAs) to address QoS-based service composition problems. More precisely, this study addresses three important subproblems of QoS-aware web service composition; QoS-based web service selection for a composite web service accommodating constraints on inter-service dependence and conflict, QoS-based resource allocation and scheduling for multiple composite services on hybrid clouds, and performance-driven composite service partitioning for decentralised execution. Based on operations research theory, we model the three problems as a constrained optimisation problem, a resource allocation and scheduling problem, and a graph partitioning problem, respectively. Then, we present novel GAs to address these problems. We also conduct experiments to evaluate the performance of the new GAs. Finally, verification experiments are performed to show the correctness of the GAs. The major outcomes from the first problem are three novel GAs: a penaltybased GA, a min-conflict hill-climbing repairing GA, and a hybrid GA. These GAs adopt different constraint handling strategies to handle constraints on interservice dependence and conflict. This is an important factor that has been largely ignored by existing algorithms that might lead to the generation of infeasible composite services. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our GAs for handling the QoS-based web service selection problem with constraints on inter-service dependence and conflict, as well as their better scalability than the existing integer programming-based method for large scale web service selection problems. ▼ Aujourd’hui, de nombreux environnements basés sur le Web, tels que les applications Web et les plateformes Web, fournissent leurs fonctions en tant que services RESTful, qui sont des ressources autonomes et auto-descriptives qui suivent le style architectural du REST (REpresentational State Transfer). Comme le Web est devenu un moyen de communication principal, intégrer des objets dans le Web (tels que les appareils intelligents) et exploiter ses technologies populaires, ont abouti au développement d’un nouveau concept : le Web des objets (ou Web of Things (WoT) en Anglais). Dans le WoT, les objets exposent leurs fonctions en tant que ressources respectant également les principes de REST. Chaque ressource fournit des fonctions qui répondent à des demandes spécifiques des utilisateurs. Mais, parfois, une seule ressource ne suffit pas pour répondre à certaines demandes et, souvent, la combinaison de plusieurs ressources, formant une composition de ressources, permet d’obtenir le résultat souhaité. Néanmoins, il existe plusieurs défis à relever lors de la composition de ressources.Dans cette thèse, nous faisons face à trois défis. Le premier consiste à vérifier le bon comportement des compositions statiques, où les ressources sont sélectionnées et liées manuellement par l’utilisateur, vu que plusieurs erreurs de conception peuvent survenir, telles que des boucles produites empêchant d’autres ressources de s’exécuter et la non correspondance entre les type de données des entrées/sorties des ressources liées. Les deux autres défis sont liés aux environnements Web hybrides fournissant des ressources : (i) dynamiques (connectées/déconnectées de l’environnement à différents instants) et (ii) statiques (établies pour être toujours disponibles). Dans ce cas, les défis portent respectivement sur la découverte automatique des ressources, en tenant compte de la position des ressources (exposées par des objets), et sur la sélection automatique des ressources appropriées pour former des compositions répondant aux demandes de l’utilisateur.Pour faire face à ces différents défis, nous proposons tout d’abord un modèle formel basé sur les réseaux de Petri colorés (Colored Petri Nets (CPN) en Anglais) qui exprime le comportement des ressources et leur composition en CPN. Cela permet d’utiliser les propriétés de CPN pour vérifier le bon comportement des compositions statiques. Ensuite nous proposons une représentation graphique formelle liant les ressources statiques à celles dynamiques, permettant à des algorithmes de graphe, adaptés à explorer les descriptions sémantiques des ressources parcourues, de découvrir automatiquement les ressources requises. ▼ Web services are autonomous, reusable, platform-independent software applications that can be accessed over the Web. One of the key advantages of utilizing Web services is that they may be quickly composed to form larger processes of varying complexity to provide functionality that none of the individual component services could provide alone. Consequently, organizations have increasingly adopted the use of Web service compositions to assemble complex, interoperable applications in a variety of domains. The decentralized nature of compositions imply that they typically function in volatile environments where the parameters of the participating Web services change during execution. Thus, it is critical to adapt to these changes promptly and properly, so as to maintain a consistent and optimal composition. One traditional approach for adapting WSCs dynamically is to identify and query for the vital changes in the data of the various component services, and then integrate the revised data into the composition model. Queries are often costly and time-consuming, however, and must be carefully managed. In this thesis, I present a method that selectively queries component Web services for their revised values by using the value of changed information (VOC) approach. VOC measures the value of the change that revised information may potentially introduce to the composition. This metric is used to determine whether or not a query should be issued to a component service for its revised value. In doing so, we may focus only on those queries that obtain information that will greatly impact the composition and eliminate costly queries that are not needed. As computing VOC comes at a computational price, I present techniques for alleviating its complexity so that it becomes a more feasible approach. Furthermore, I present ways of generalizing the VOC-based querying approach so that it may be used to adapt a wide array of composition configurations as well as accomodate compositions that are sensitive to risk. In all, I demonstrate empirically and theoretically that the VOC-driven selective querying method compares favorably to other state-of-the-art querying approaches for adaptation.

▼ Abstract: The automation of the composition of Web services is, in the view of the author, one of the most important problems in the area of Web services. Beyond other characteristics, only the automatic composition can deal with a changing environment where the services are permanently inserted, removed, and modified. Existing methods performing the automatic service composition have several limitations. Some deal with a very limited number of control flow patterns, while others do not consider the semantic markup of services. In addition, in many cases there is no quantitative evaluation of the method's performance. In such a way, the objective of this thesis is to propose a method to perform the automatic composition of semantic Web services considering the five basic types of control flow identified by the Workflow Management Coalition, namely: sequential, parallel split, synchronization, exclusive choice and simple merge; and for loop control flow, classified as a structural control flow pattern. The rules that describe the composition of the service are hybrid: based in semantics and in information retrieval techniques. Services are described in OWL-S, an ontology described in OWL that allows the semantically description of the IOPE attributes (input, output, prerequisite and effect) of a service, but only the input and output parameters were taken into consideration in this work. A prototype was implemented to validate the proposed rules. An asynchronous Team (A-Team) algorithm with genetic agents was used to carry out the composition according to the sequential, parallel and synchronization control flows. The experimental evaluation of the composition algorithm employed a public collection of semantic Web services composed of more than 1000 descriptions of services. An experimental performance evaluation showed that, for simple composition cases, the algorithm reduced the average response time in approximately 97%, when compared to blind search. Les services Web (SW) sont considérés comme étant un bloc pilier pour la réalisation de transactions électroniques entre entreprises. Ainsi, de plus en plus d'entreprises utilisent des SW pour réaliser des transactions avec leurs partenaires et/ou offrir des services en ligne. Dans un tel contexte, chaque entreprise possède un ou plusieurs référentiels privés de descriptions de SW. Pour que ses SW soient consultables et puissent être découverts par d'autres entreprises, une entreprise devra rendre ses référentiels de SW publics. La solution couramment utilisée consiste à publier les descriptions de ses SW dans des annuaires de SW. En conséquence, le nombre d'annuaires disponibles peut être aussi important que le grand nombre d'entreprises et la découverte d'un SW devient ainsi une tâche fastidieuse pour un demandeur de services et coûteuse pour un système de découverte. L'objectif principal de cette thèse est de fournir des solutions pour assurer une découverte d'annuaires de SW adaptée à un environnement distribué. Pour ce faire, nous proposons tout d'abord d'organiser le réseau d'annuaires en communautés. Ensuite, afin de préserver la consistance de cette organisation face aux changements qui peuvent se produire (départ/arrivée d'annuaires), nous définissons les mécanismes de gestion nécessaires. Enfin, nous proposons une approche pour la découverte d'annuaires de SW qui utilise deux filtres pour limiter l'espace de recherche d'un demandeur de services. Les solutions proposées ont été testées par la mise en place d'un réseau de communautés d'annuaires, l'implémentation d'un gestionnaire de communautés et d'un système de découverte d'annuaires.

Web services (WS) can be seen as a pillar block for achieving electronic B2B transactions. More and more companies are using WS to achieve transactions with their partners and/or offer on-line services. These companies have to make their WS available for consultation through their own private WS registries. As a result, the number of WS registries that are made available for use can be as many as the large number of companies. This raises an old, search engine, problem in a new form: discovery mechanisms of WS are not efficient both in response times and quality of results. In this context, if appropriate solutions are not considered, "traditional" WS discovery mechanisms that consist of scanning all the registries would for instance slow down the increase rate of WS. In this thesis, we are interested in WS discovery in a distributed registry environment. To do this, we first propose to organize a registries network into communities based on functionalities offered by the WS of a registry. Then, to handle the dynamic nature of communities and their members, we define the needed management mechanisms to monitor changes and reconcile potential conflicts. Finally, we propose an approach for WS registries discovery that uses two filters to limit the search space.
