This thesis project is a study of a complex of historic, railway-goods warehouses in Nottingham (UK) that were internally destroyed by a fire two decades ago. The site has has become an erstwhile symbol of the city, a stark reminder of both a past age of prosperity and the century of post-industrial decline that ultimately followed.Now facing the threat of demolition, it is questioned whether it is possible to rescue the intrinsic potential of these ruins to radically transport us beyond the experience of the everyday city, to a unique and inhabitable space of transition between past and present. This thesis also examins the changing role of the library in the 21st century and the future for this public institution as a vestibule for the transmission of local culture and history. This leads to the central question of the thesis project; is it possible - through the appropriate treatment of an industrial ruin - to begin a process of reconciliation with the past, one that can provide some kind closure to the cognitive dissidence caused by language and tone of this kind of architectural heritage and the limited prospects that city like Nottingham faces today.

Detta examensarbete är en undersökning av ett komplex av historiska, järnvägsgodslager i Nottingham (Storbritannien) som internt förstördes av en brand två decennier sedan. Webbplatsen har blivit en dåvarande symbol för staden, en skarp påminnelse om både en tidigare ålder av välstånd och århundrade postindustriella nedgång som slutligen followed.Now inför hotet om rivning, är det ifrågasättas om det är möjligt att rädda inneboende potentialen hos dessa ruiner att radikalt transportera oss bortom upplevelsen av vardagliga staden, till en unik och beboelig utrymme för övergång mellan dåtid och nutid. Avhandlingen examins också förändrade roll biblioteket i det 21 century.This leder till den centrala frågan om examensarbetet; är det möjligt - genom lämplig behandling av en industriell ruin - att inleda en försoningsprocess med det förflutna, en som kan ge någon form stängning till den kognitiva oliktänkande på grund av språket och tonen i den här typen av arkitektoniska arvet och de begränsade möjligheterna att stad som Nottingham står inför i dag.

Globalization is heaving its impact on many field. For the field of warehousing this development, in combination with the actual shortage of labor, means that many warehouse owners are forced to reduce their warehouse costs in order to stay competitive with warehouses in low-wage countries. On the other side the warehouse owners are pulled by recent technical innovations, which have reduced the drawbacks of automation. One of these recent innovations, is the mobile fulfillment unit-to-unit order picking system, which is presented in this paper. To make this system more affordable and hence to increase the competitiveness of warehouses in western Europe, research is required optimizing each of the system parts. This research focuses on the order processing part of the system, which has changed considerably compared to existing mobile fulfillment order picking systems. In this system units are brought to two sides of a stationary order picker, who then transfers products from one unit to another unit. The order processing problem covers the sequencing of the unit visits at the order picking station, the batching of these units and the determination of the products that should be transferred. Using insights from literature, several approaches are proposed to each of the problem parts. Each of these approaches is then tested and validated. Combining the approaches for each problem part leads to solutions addressing the full problem. All these solutions are tested against each other using a data set of one day of an existing warehouse. The tests are executed for multiple different order picking station configuration and for multiple data set sizes. This leads to an overview of the effectiveness of each of these solutions in terms of computational time and the reduced number of AGV visits. From the results several conclusions can be drawn concerning the optimal solution for a specific warehouse. For an example warehouse in the Netherlands, a significant reduction of 25% can be obtained, regarding the number of visits, compared to the baseline approach. Which means the required number of AGVs can be lower, the investment costs for this system can be reduced and hence the competitiveness for this warehouse can be increased by implementing one of solutions presented in this paper.

At best the impression is given that a building at the moment of its conversion has finally achieved its true destiny. Constructed during the industrial era, often utilitarian and non-descript in their design, warehouse and factory buildings were constructed to store and manufacture goods. Upon their obsolescence, due to containerisation, the closure of business, and subsequent dereliction through disrepair or disuse, these largely structurally sound buildings were left vacant until a cultural movement began in America, converting them into living and studio spaces. The adaptive reuse of these buildings resulted in a new programme, which was to provide residence and ‘store’ people. Much later, in the 1990s this movement spread to Wellington, New Zealand. This delay raises the issue of what makes a successful conversion of a warehouse or factory building to loft-style living space, and through which architectural approaches, criteria and methods may we examine these buildings? This thesis first examines pioneering examples of loft and warehouse living in SoHo, New York, from the initial subversive beginnings of the movement, when artists illegally occupied these spaces. It looks at the gentrification of neighbourhoods and how the loft eventually emerged as a highly sought after architectural living space, first in SoHo, New York before spreading globally to Wellington, New Zealand. Four Wellington warehouse and factory buildings that were converted into residential living spaces are examined and compared. The aim is to understand the conversion process and necessary strategies required to instil a new architectural programme within an existing warehouse or factory building, recognising the unique conditions in such converted architectural spaces. A reused, converted warehouse or former factory can acquire characteristics unique to that building: a certain patina of age, a residue of industrial history, imbedded qualities of surface, a unique architectural structure, as well as the location of the building itself. The case studies show how these imbedded characteristics, can be preserved when the building is converted, thereby retaining the building’s former history while providing a new function. This thesis then analyses whether any commonalities and differences in warehouse and factory living existed between Wellington and SoHo New York, in terms of the evolution of the cultural movement and architectural design. The thesis shows that successful approaches to conversion of factories or warehouses can both save the buildings from demolition, preserve and highlight their heritage and create an architecturally unique space, with inherent qualities that cannot be recreated in a new building. A crescente preocupação com o suporte ao processo de tomada de decisão estratégica fez com que as empresas buscassem tecnologias que apoiassem as suas decisões. A tecnologia mais utilizada atualmente é a de Data Warehouse (DW), que permite armazenar dados de forma que seja possível produzir informação útil e confiável para auxiliar na tomada de decisão estratégica. Aliando-se os conceitos de Data Warehouse Espacial (DWE), que permite o armazenamento e o gerenciamento de geometrias, e de Data Warehouse Temporal (DWT), que possibilita representar as mudanças nos dados que ocorrem no mundo real, surgiu o tema de pesquisa conhecido por Data Warehouse Espaço-Temporal (DWET), que é próprio para o tratamento de geometrias que se alteram ao longo do tempo. Essas tecnologias, aliadas ao constante crescimento no volume de dados armazenados, evidenciam a necessidade de estruturas de indexação que melhorem o desempenho do processamento de consultas analíticas com predicados espaciais e com variação das geometrias no tempo. Nesse sentido, este trabalho se concentrou na proposta de um índice para DWET denominado Spatio- Temporal Bitmap Index, ou STB-index. O índice proposto foi projetado para o processamento de consultas do tipo drill-down e roll-up considerando a existência de hierarquias espaciais predefinidas, sendo que os atributos espaciais podem variar sua posição e sua forma ao longo do tempo. A validação do STB-index ocorreu por meio da realização de testes experimentais utilizando um DWET criado a partir de dados sintéticos. Os testes avaliaram o tempo e o número de acessos a disco para a construção do índice, a quantidade de espaço para armazenamento do índice e o tempo e número de acessos a disco para o processamento de consultas analíticas. Os resultados obtidos foram comparados com o processamento de consultas utilizando os recursos disponíveis dos sistemas gerenciadores de banco de dados, sendo que o STB-index apresentou um ganho de desempenho entre 98,12% e 99,22% no tempo de resposta das consultas se comparado ao uso de visões materializadas.

The growing concern with the support of the decision-making process has made companies to search technologies that support their decisions. The technology most widely used presently is the Data Warehouse (DW), which allows storing data so it is possible to produce useful and reliable information to assist in strategic decisions. Combining the concepts of Spatial Data Warehouse (SDW), that allows geometry storage and managing, and Temporal Data Warehouse (TDW), which allows storing data changes that occur in the real-world, a research topic known as Spatio-Temporal Data Warehouse (STDW) has emerged. STDW are suitable for the treatment of geometries that change over time. These technologies, combined with the steady growth volume of data, show the necessity of index structures to improve the performance of analytical query processing with spatial predicates and also with geometries that may vary over time. ▼ Title: Improving the Processes in a WarehouseBackground: For warehouses to perform as efficiently and effectively as possible, helping companies maintain a high service level and react to market changes, continuous improvement is necessary. This is achievable through amongst other methods, the analysis of operations to identify wasteful activities and eliminate them. Purpose: This paper, through a thorough description and understanding of the current outbound processes at Company N, seeks to identify any wasteful activity and what might be causing such wastes. Furthermore the paper shall seek to make recommendations for reducing or eliminating wastes identified. Research Questions: What wastes can be identified in Company N’s outbound processes and why do they occur? What recommendations should be made for reducing wastes at Company N? Method: This research is qualitative in nature carried out using a deductive approach. Primary data was gathered mainly through observation and semi-structured and unstructured interviews with the goal of gaining as deep an understanding of the processes as possible. Secondary data was also gotten from multiple sources within the company. Contemporary tools and techniques like Value Stream Mapping and Gemba (observation at the place of work) were useful in identifying wastes; meanwhile the 5 Why’s questioning technique was used for finding the causes of wastes identified. Benchmarking was also used as a means of sourcing ideas and proven standards of performance. Conclusion: The research identified five main wastes including waiting, travelling, unnecessary motion, defects and processing. The main causes of the wastes include the use of manual verification during processes, limited use of batch picking, the absence of lifting aid and dissatisfaction amongst workers. The report makes recommendations including change of handling equipment and operating procedures to accommodate automatic verification of locations and items, as well as better usage of batch picking. It is also recommended to swap the location of certain articles and introduce marketing analysis to reduce travelling. Finally, recommendations are made for counteracting worker dissatisfaction such as a proposed improvement report, an appraisal system, more cross training and internal personnel development.

▼ Storage assignment policies and layout decisions have an impact on warehouse performance. The purpose of this study is to measure how storage assignment policies and layout decisions affect travel distances of material handling equipment in a warehouse and to find out whether the current storage assignment policy and layout meet the objectives set by the management. This study is a case study and the case company is Suomen Nestlé Oy. The research methodology includes a discrete-event simulation and semi-structured theme interviews. FlexSim simulation software is used in order to investigate how a warehouse layout modification and different storage assignment policies such as the current storage assignment policy, random storage and class-based storage affect travel distances of material handling equipment in a real-life food warehouse. Moreover, four semi-structured theme interviews are conducted in the own warehouses of Suomen Nestlé Oy and in the outsourced warehouses of Suomen Nestlé Oy in order to examine whether the management is satisfied with the current storage assignment policy and layout, and how the warehouse performance is measured. I find that class-based storage can reduce order picking travel distances and travel times compared to the current storage assignment policy and random storage in the warehouse of Suomen Nestlé Oy. Also, class-based storage can reduce total travel distance and travel time of material handling equipment compared to random storage in the warehouse of Suomen Nestlé Oy. Sizes and dimensions of each class, number of empty storage locations for buffer in each class and the skewness of the product demand curve have a huge impact on the performance of class-based storage. The proposed new layout increases putaway travel distances and total travel distance of material handling equipment compared to the current layout in the warehouse of Suomen Nestlé Oy. The interviews reveal that the managers are dissatisfied with the current storage assignment policies as they do not reduce travel distances of material handling equipment and material handling costs. Implementation of class-based storage is considered problematic due to difficulties configuring ERP, increased need for information management and low storage space. Outsourced warehouses could enhance the use of class-based storage and their own operations if Nestlé would provide them with product demand forecasts. Methods regarding warehouse performance measurement vary a lot in different warehouses. However, simulation and benchmarking are not common tools to measure warehouse performance according to the interviews. Labor resource allocation and planning can be considered the most important area in warehouse performance measurement based on the interviews.

▼ Plataformas de computação em nuvem proveem escalabilidade, elasticidade e tolerância a falhas aos sistemas computacionais. Além disso, elas foram projetadas para lidar com grande volume de dados utilizando recursos computacionais quase ilimitados. Data Warehouse Geográfico (DWG) se tornou uma das principais tecnologias de suporte à decisão, pois promove a integração do Data Warehouse convencionais, das ferramentas On-Line Analytical Processing e dos Sistemas de Informações Geográficas. Por esse motivo, um DWG viabiliza a análise no contexto espacial aliada à execução de consultas multidimensionais envolvendo grande volume de dados. A combinação da computação em nuvem e dos DWG traz consigo o desafio de prover análises de dados espaciais em um ambiente distribuído. Além disso, há a preocupação com o desempenho no processamento de consultas, que utilizam janelas de consultas espaciais ad-hoc e realizam várias junções entre as tabelas de dimensões e de fatos. Embora existam eficientes mecanismos para aumentar o desempenho do processamento de consultas em DWG, como as estruturas de indexação, elas se tornam impróprias aos DWG mantidos em nuvem porque estes mecanismos não lidam com a recuperação de dados em ambientes distribuídos. Nesta dissertação, propõe-se um novo índice para DWG mantidos em nuvem chamado CSB-Index (Cloud Spatial- Bitmap Index). O CSB-Index se baseia no SB-Index e permite a recuperação de dados mantidos em um ambiente distribuído, pois mantém em sua estrutura referências aos bancos de dados que compõe o DWG. Além disso, ele introduz o uso do Índice Bitmap de Junção aos DWG armazenados em nuvem, evitando o processamento das custosas operações de junção estrela. A viabilidade do CSB-Index foi comprovada por meio de testes experimentais de desempenho e escalabilidade. Comparações entre diferentes métodos de acesso indicaram que o CSB-Index diminuiu significativamente o tempo de resposta do processamento de consultas roll-up e drilldown relacionadas aos predicados espaciais “intersecta”, “está contido” e “contém”, possibilitando redução no tempo de processamento destas consultas de 58,2% até 99,65%. Também foi verificado que a escalabilidade dos dados e do número de máquinas que armazenam o DWG não afetam negativamente o desempenho do CSB-Index. Por fim, este trabalho também investigou o impacto do uso das federações no processamento das consultas SOLAP e comprovou que está técnica possibilita maior desempenho ao processamento destas consultas. ▼ Existem várias propostas na literatura visando a integração das funcionalidades e características pertinentes aos processamentos de dados analíticos (OLAP) e geográficos (SIG). O principal objetivo é prover um ambiente único, com capacidades de processamento geográfico e multidimensional, para dar suporte ao processo de tomada de decisões estratégicas. Este tipo de ambiente vem sendo referido atualmente como SOLAP. Entretanto, pelo fato destas duas tecnologias terem sido concebidas com propósitos distintos, a integração entre estes dois ambientes não é uma tarefa fácil, e mesmo com tantas pesquisas sendo desenvolvidas, temos alguns pontos em aberto que merecem ser explorados. A definição de modelos de dados para Data Warehouse Geográficos é um dos items desta integração. Outro ponto inserido neste contexto é a definição de funções de agregação para medidas geográficas. Estas funções são utilizadas no momento da especificação dos cubos de dados multidimensionais e geográficos. Conseqüentemente, também necessitamos de novos modelos de cubos de dados que possibilitem a associação de geometrias aos fatos e aos membros dos níveis. Uma das partes mais importantes desse processo de integração é a consulta aos dados. Porém, a maioria das abordagens que almejam esta integração de processamento, não dispõe de uma linguagem de consulta que possibilite a utilização simultânea, tanto de operadores multidimensionais como espaciais. É neste contexto que se insere esta tese, na qual apresentamos: i) um modelo formal para definição de DWG; ii) um conjunto de funções de agregação para medidas geográficas; iii) um modelo formal para cubos de dados chamado GeoMDCube; e iv) uma linguagem de consulta geográfica-multidimensional denominada GeoMDQL (Geographic Multidimensional Query Language). GeoMDQL estende e integra, em uma única sintaxe, os principais operadores multidimensionais e espaciais presentes na maioria das ferramentas e em ambientes disponíveis atualmente para processamento multidimensional e geográfico. GeoMDQL é baseada em padrões bem estabelecidos como ( MDX Multidimensional Expressions) e OGC Simple Features for SQL. As idéias propostas foram aplicadas na prática, por meio da implementação de uma arquitetura SOLAP chamada Golapware e o desenvolvimento de estudo de caso baseado em dados de aplicações reais. ▼ No início da década de 90, a tecnologia de Data Warehouse floresceu como uma solução à necessidade crescente de informações integradas pela gerência estratégica das organizações, como parte de processos decisórios de alto nível. A partir da análise histórica de dados operacionais, sistemas data warehouse possibilitam a descoberta de tendências de negócio que se traduzem em aumento da vantagem competitiva com a definição de processos operacionais mais precisos. Devido à complexidade e o volume de dados processados, o desenvolvimento de aplicações data warehouse tem sido fortemente influenciado, ao longo dos anos, pela organização física do banco de dados adotado e por outros aspectos implementacionais que têm como principal objetivo assegurar performance e integridade à aplicação. Contudo, apesar dos inegáveis benefícios, essa abordagem tem como conseqüência direta uma especificação de requisitos pobre, que não reflete de forma completa e adequada as necessidades do usuário. Em decorrência disso, soluções de suporte à decisão apresentam freqüentemente efeitos colaterais tais como altos índices de erro, escalabilidade limitada, baixa qualidade da informação agregada e um distanciamento acentuado entre desenvolvedores e usuários, contribuindo para o fracasso de inúmeros projetos. Esse cenário sugere a utilização de técnicas de Engenharia de Requisitos em suporte a uma especificação de requisitos de alta qualidade em sistemas data warehouse. Nesse sentido, uma abordagem metodológica é requerida para garantir (i) a correta identificação dos requisitos do usuário, (ii) um projeto de sistema afinado e (iii) a definição de um modelo dimensional que preencha todas as necessidades de análise estratégica dos usuários finais. Essa dissertação propõe uma metodologia para definição de requisitos em sistemas data warehouse. A abordagem adotada está centrada em um modelo de fases que direciona o processo de especificação dos requisitos, enquanto propõe um conjunto de artefatos para a coleta dos aspectos funcionais, não-funcionais e multidimensionais que integram a solicitação de serviço. Aliada a técnicas eficientes para gerenciamento de requisitos, a metodologia serve como um instrumento para rastrear as mudanças sofridas pelos requisitos ao longo do projeto, e assim possibilitar que ambas as visões dimensional e de requisitos estejam sempre ajustadas às necessidades do usuário. Os princípios que servem como pano de fundo à metodologia foram concebidos ao longo do desenvolvimento de um projeto data warehouse de larga escala conduzido pelo SERPRO, uma empresa do Ministério da Fazenda, em sua maior unidade de negócio, a SUNAT Superintendência de Negócios e Administração Tributária. ▼ A presente dissertação enquadra-se na unidade curricular de Dissertação do último ano do Mestrado Integrado em Engenharia e Gestão Industrial do Departamento de Produção de Sistemas da Universidade do Minho. Esta dissertação foi realizada em contexto industrial e centrou-se no desenvolvimento do projeto com a designação Aplicação de Ferramentas Lean Production e Rastreio de Equipamentos numa empresa de montagens elétricas, que se desenvolveu na Bragalux. A metodologia de investigação usada no projeto foi Action Research percorrendo as 5 etapas da metodologia: iniciou no diagnóstico e definição do problema, seguindo-se o planeamento de ações, depois a seleção e implementação de ações, de seguida a avaliação dos resultados e por fim a especificação da aprendizagem. Sendo assim, a investigação começou com a Revisão Bibliográfica onde se abordaram os conceitos Lean Thinking, Ferramentas Lean Production como 5S, Gestão Visual, Standard Work e Kaizen, e ainda o conceito Qualidade e metodologias associadas, e por fim abordaram-se alguns conceitos da área da Logística. Seguidamente foi feita uma apresentação geral da empresa, seguindo-se uma descrição e diagnóstico dos processos. Nesta etapa foi feita uma análise da situação inicial da empresa, identificaram-se os potenciais problemas, como a falta de identificação e informação de zonas de alocação de materiais, problemas no inventário dos equipamentos e ferramentas, a baixa qualificação dos colaboradores do armazém, ineficiência do sistema informático e no rastreio das ferramentas e equipamentos, falta de normalização, existência de materiais obsoletos e falta de materiais. Depois de identificados os problemas, foram propostas medidas para solucionar os problemas recorrendo a ferramentas Lean Thinking, bem como a técnicas utilizadas na Logística. As propostas apresentadas permitiram obter vários ganhos: melhorar a receção e expedição dos materiais e equipamentos, reduzindo os tempos das operações associadas, rastreabilidade eficaz dos equipamentos e ferramentas que a Bragalux possui, através da base de dados criada e redução dos materiais obsoletos dispersos pelos armazéns, estaleiro e oficina. ▼ Achtergrond - Alhoewel het onderwijs een toename laat zien in het gebruik van digitale ondersteuning en leermiddelen, blijkt de inzet van serious gaming wat achter te blijven (SURFnet, 2016). Echter kan serious gaming ingezet worden om de vaardigheden van de authentieke beroepspraktijk te oefenen, wat naast het spelelement motivatie verhogend kan werken. Doel - De praktijkcomponent in de opleiding Assistent logistiek medewerker is minimaal. In dit onderzoek werd gekeken wat het effect is van het spelen van de Warehouse Game op leeruitkomst, transfer van het geleerde naar de beroepssituatie en mate van vertrouwen in beroepscompetenties, in vergelijking met een groep die dit spel niet speelt. Ook werd gekeken welke leer- en gamekenmerken een positieve invloed op de resultaten van de gestelde hypotheses hebben (Trooster et al., 2017). Proefpersonen, procedure, onderzoeksontwerp - Aan dit onderzoek namen 42 studenten van het Zadkine Startcollege deel. De participanten zijn niet at random toebedeeld, maar werden gevormd door vier bestaande klassen, vandaar dat dit onderzoek gebruik maakte van het quasi- experimenteel ontwerp. The game-based learning evaluation model (GEM) van Oprins et al. (2015) is gebruikt als raamwerk om het effect van serious games op een systematische en gestandaardiseerde manier te meten. Meetinstrumenten – Bestaande logistiektoetsen zijn aangepast en ingezet bij de voor- en nameting (De Handelsroute, 2017). Met de gevalideerde vragenlijst van Oprins, et al. (2013) is in de voormeting intrinsieke motivatie en self-efficacy gemeten. Studenten beoordeelden zichzelf in de voor- en nameting op zeven gedragsindicatoren behorende bij de kwalificatie Assistent logistiek medewerker. De praktijktest werd middels dezelfde kwalificatie beoordeeld (Examenplatform Entree, 2018). Het effect van het spelen van de Warehouse Game is gemeten door het afnemen van de gevalideerde GEM-light vragenlijsten over leer- en gamekenmerken van Oprins et al. (2015). Aan de hand van de vragen van Oprins et al. (2015) zijn er semigestructureerde interviews afgenomen bij de experimentele groep. Resultaten – De klassen verschilden significant wat betreft persoonskenmerken, echter niet wat betreft game-ervaring. Er zijn geen significante verschillen gevonden tussen beide groepen op de leeruitkomsten kennis, transfer en self-assessment. De experimentele groep was significant meer intrinsiek gemotiveerd, scoorde, alhoewel niet significant, hoger op self-efficacy en engagement / concentratie en vonden de lessen significant waardevoller dan de studenten uit de controlegroep. Er zijn significant medium tot sterke verbanden gevonden met de leerkenmerken en de uitkomstmaten praktijktest en self-assessment. Ook zijn er significant medium tot sterke verbanden gevonden tussen het leerkenmerk motivatie en de uitkomstmaten. ▼ Background: Retailing industry has been growing all around the world tremendously. We will see a remarkable change and improvement in clothing and baby products retailing industries in Sweden. Previously, companies either try to sell through traditional brick and mortar physical stores or online. But since the last decade, to become successful company in new global world, companies realize the fact that they need to combine the strategy of selling through different channels. In plain words the integration of these channels is referred as an omni-channel. Combining the different selling strategies and offering through different mode of channels raises the need for enhanced performance management throughout the supply chain. Within supply chain, warehouse is a crucial element and due to shift in strategies it is the most affected section. An efficient warehouse design is become essential in order to get performance and cost-effective benefits. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the impacts of having omni channel strategy on warehouse management. How it affects the overall working of warehousing, and influence their planning, need for improvement, integration and optimization. Further, challenges that a central warehouse faces in accordance to meet new demands and needs, raised due to omni channel strategy e.g. buy anything from anywhere at any time, could be explored along with their possible solutions. Method: An exploratory study is conducted, with qualitative case study methodology. Primary data with semi-structured interviews were considered to be main data collection method. Conclusion: The author has founded challenges that central warehouse faces during its operational activities. Challenges that are identified in central warehouse operational activities with reference to omni channel logistics strategy are human errors, additional work, large and mix pallets, barcoding, ERP and WMS low level integrated systems, unsuitable warehouse design, incompatible picking gears, ineffective automated packing machine and shipping. But these problems can be solved by having optimal integrated ERP system, RFID technology, new improved information technology, improved warehouse layout design and using advanced picking gears.

O objectivo deste relatório é dar a conhecer, um possível percurso de carreira para um aluno que na entrada no mundo profissional, se interessou por sistemas de suporte à decisão. Descrevi a minha experiência profissional desde a entrada no curso de Engenharia Informática e as opções que fui tomando durante e depois do curso, que demonstram o interesse e tendência para esta área dentro das TI. Assim, o facto de após terminar o curso, ter trabalhado em diversas áreas nas três empresas que integrei, desde o desenvolvimento aplicacional em ERP e CRM, na definição de requisitos de arquitecturas de HW e SW, na qualidade e integração de dados em múltiplos sistemas e em modelos analíticos, sempre em metodologias e ambientes diversos. Esta multiplicidade de cenários faz-me pensar que me encontro actualmente na área certa, o Business Intelligence. O curso na FCT-UNL transmitiu-me entre outras, uma capacidade de adaptação ao nível das mais diversas tecnologias e metodologias, assim como uma grande tolerância à frustração, devido aos inúmeros obstáculos que foram sendo colocados durante o curso. Tudo isto tem permitido ao longo da minha carreira ultrapassar as sempre difíceis tarefas a nível técnico, funcional e de gestão que me foram surgindo. Dados, Informação, Conhecimento e Inteligência é um fluxo natural e uma motivação para criar soluções de Business Intelligence. O fluxo descrito deve ser seguido em qualquer SI/TIC. Não é profícuo para nenhuma organização ter dados provenientes de inúmeras aplicações, se estes não gerarem informação que se traduza em conhecimento. O fluxo deve ser cumprido, para que o produto final de um projecto de Business Intelligence seja um acréscimo de conhecimento e valor para a organização ao qual pertence. The ability to locate specific objects within images is an essential step in various computer vision based engineering applications. Image segmentation is the task of dividing an image into "segments" that are uniform as well as homogeneous with respect to some characteristics, for example grey tone or texture as in Haralick et al. This thesis seeks to perform image segmentation using a Deep Learning (DL) approach in the area of warehouse automation, specifically focusing on an order picking use case of Vanderlande Industries (VI). Generally in literature, DL algorithms for image segmentation are split into two main classes: algorithms for RGB images and algorithms for RGB-D images. RGB stands for the Red, Green, and Blue values of a pixel. RGB-D stands for the Red, Green, Blue, and Depth values of a pixel. The depth value in this case differs from the RGB values in that it does not give a value for a colour intensity, but rather it gives a value for physical distance between the camera and the object it is capturing. The challenge addressed by this thesis focuses on whether the introduction of depth data results in a substantially better performance than using RGB-only images, based on a data-set provided by VI. Also, this thesis looks into the maximum allowed deviation along the X-axis in the registration of the depth data to the RGB images. Two networks from literature were investigated and implemented in MATLAB for this purpose: the SegNet architecture proposed by Badrinarayanan et al. and the FuseNet architecture proposed by Hazirbas et al. Through experiments we have found that, for this use case, the introduction of complementary depth data leads to an improvement over the use of RGB-only images. We also find that, for this use case, the maximum allowed deviation along the X-axis in the registration of the depth data to the RGB images is approximately equal to 1.67 millimetres. The results in this thesis seem to indicate that investing in acquiring an additional depth band does have a positive effect on the accuracy of image segmentation for order picking in warehouse automation.
