ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A comparative study between a Dutch postcolonial novel, Een vlek op de rug (1963) by J. van de Walle and an Afrikaans post-apartheid novel, Foxtrot van die Vleiseters (1993) by Eben Venter, produces fascinating results. Despite dissimilarities, e.g. the almost thirty years that separate these two texts and the fact that the stories take place in different centuries on different continents, there is an unmistakable unity of intention that binds them together. The similarities are most clearly seen in the criticism of two discriminatory policies, namely that of colonialism and apartheid (which can also be seen as a form of colonialism) respectively. In both novels the narrator attempts to come to terms with the past and his own feelings of guilt. Both narrators write from a socio-politically advantaged position with on the one hand mixed feelings of empathy with the suppressed other and problematic identification with their own group on the other hand. This study investigates ways in which these feelings of guilt manifest and how the storyteller deals with his conflicting emotions through the therapeutic process of telling the story.

AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: ’n Vergelykende studie tussen ’n Nederlandse postkoloniale roman, Een vlek op de rug (1963) deur J. van de Walle en ’n Afrikaanse post-apartheid roman Foxtrot van die Vleiseters (1993) deur Eben Venter, lewer boeiende resultate. Ten spyte van verskille soos die tydsgaping van 30 jaar tussen die verskyning van die twee romans en die feit dat die verhale afspeel op twee verskillende kontinente, in twee verskillende eeue, is daar tog sterk ooreenkomste wat ’n vergelykende studie tussen hierdie twee tekste sinvol maak. Die parallel is daarin gelee dat beide romans kritiek wil lewer op ’n onderdrukkende sisteem, hetsy kolonialisme of apartheid (wat ook gesien kan word as ’n vorm van kolonialisme). Die vertellers in beide verhale probeer om, vanuit ’n posisie van sosio-politiese bevoorregting, skuldgevoelens oor die verlede te verwerk. In beide gevalle vertoon die verteller empatie met die onderdrukte ander, maar ’n onoorbrugbare afstand bly enersyds bestaan. Andersyds is daar sprake van ’n problematiese identifisering met die eie groep omdal die verteller homself nie ten voile met hulle kan assosieer nie. In hierdie studie word onder meer aandag bestee aan die wyse waarop hierdie konflikterende skuldgevoelens na vore kom en hoe die onderskeie vertellers probeer om ’n mate van terapie te verkry deur middel van die vertelling.

Since the 19th century, scholastic biblical hermeneutics mushroomed in competition with other critical disciplines within the human sciences, and this resulted in the emergence of the historical critical approach. This is an umbrella-term which describes a plurality of methods. These approaches include the textual criticism; literary criticism; form criticism; redaction criticism; source criticism and many others. The historical critical approach dominated biblical interpretation for the last one hundred and fifty years. The socio-scientific critics used the expression “context” to understand the importance of the life-situation; the economic; social; political; historical; cultural, gender and psychological “context” to bring back the full picture of “human context" of the Bible. Representatives such as Bruce Malina and Richard Rohrbaugh read and interpret the New Testament from a modernized industrial perspective with certain presumptions and assumptions from the reader’s own culture and background. New Testament scholars have made attempts to use the aspects of the social world of ancient Israel to investigate the origin, development, and/or function of these societal components of the social systems and structures of biblical Israel. The socio-scientific critics feel that every interpretation, giving meaning to a text, derives from a cultural system. They say that using social-science models from Mediterranean cultures is an honest attempt to come to the same understanding, of that of the first century reader and author by applying the same social systems. According to the socio-scientific critics, the modern reader must understand what then made sense to a Mediterranean culture. In this case, they also say that the knowledge of the sociological data of the biblical world is very important for the interpreters. Socio-scientific criticism studies, emphasises the strict relationship between the texts of the Bible and the life actually lived by the early Christian communities. We can therefore conclude by saying that the socio-scientific criticism is indeed that phase of the exegetical task which concerns itself with the social and cultural dimensions of the text and of its environmental context.

They are the Symphony No. 1 in A Minor, the First String Quartet, the Duo Concertante and the Missa in illo tempore. These readings are grounded in richly detailed descriptions of the compositional processes, drawing on material such as sketches, autographs, diaries, correspondence and reception documents, as well as in structural analyses of Van Wyk’s music and of certain peer compositions. Each reading is set in a separate theoretical frame, resulting in a multi-perspectival consideration of Arnold van Wyk’s music that partakes in a range of current disciplinary discourses. The First Symphony is discussed in the discursive context of English Sibelianism, and Arnold van Wyk’s dialogue with Sibelius’s symphonic works is investigated through comparisons of Van Wyk’s and Sibelius’s applications of two-dimensional sonata form and tragic reversed sonata form. The reading so developed sheds new musical light on the difficulties of Van Wyk’s position as a colonial composer residing in the centre of a crumbling Empire. The compositional process of Van Wyk’s First String Quartet is described in juxtaposition with the compositional process of Bartók’s Sixth String Quartet, and the similarities and differences of the two narratives and the two compositions highlight a second aspect of Van Wyk’s colonial identity, namely the ambiguity of his return to South Africa from England, neither of which place could signify “home”. The reading of the Duo Concertante focuses on the Elegia from that work, interpreting the piece as part of a network of intertextual connections, including Van Wyk’s model for this piece, Martin Peerson’s (1580-1650) The Fall of the Leafe, Gerald Finzi’s Elegy for Orchestra Op. 20, entitled The Fall of the Leaf, as well as Van Wyk’s own theme for the Rondo of the Duo, to which he made various musical references in the Elegia which are associated with the concept of “prophecy”. This intertextual reading considers Van Wyk’s continuing problematic identification with the English musical culture and tradition, compounded by his uncomfortable place in the stifling cultural establishment of apartheid South Africa. Van Wyk’s Missa in illo tempore is interpreted in a post-apartheid context. The work purports to react to the conditions in London in 1945 at the end of the Second World War (when Van Wyk first started to work on it) as well as the conditions in apartheid South Africa in 1977-1979 (when he completed the work as a commission for the Stellenbosch Tercentenary Festival). The reading considers the ethics of art that intends to respond to situations of suffering, drawing on post-Holocaust art scholarship as a theoretical frame. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This MA dissertation is focused on the various perceptions and representations of animals in Marlene van Niekerk’s prize-winning anthology of verse Kaar (2012). The dissertation commences with an introduction that outlines the research design of the study followed by a theoretical chapter that gives an overview of the articulation between human animal studies and ecocriticism. Human animal studies constitue the theoretical development that provides the most suitable framework for a study of the poems by Van Niekerk devoted to animals. Specific attention is given to landscape and place in addition to insights from biomusicology that are relevant for a study of some of the animal poems in Kaar. The chapter about taxonomies and the challenge posed to hierarchies in Van Niekerk’s anthology is illustrated in discussions of the poems “Herfsmeditasie 1” and “Etologie”. These poems contain reflections by the poetic speaker about the place of humans (and non-human animals) within the greater natural environment in addition to the postcolonial context in South Africa. The third chapter is a study of six poems in Kaar devoted to birds and the fourth chapter explores musicality as a point of convergence for human and non-human animals. Here the poems “Visioen”, “Brulpadda” and “Turdus merula” receive particular attention. Musicality may also be a further attempt to understand both nature and human nature as it is a phenomenon that is shared by animals and humans alike. This statement bears out the argument offered by Derrida that humans are followers of nature. The conclusion reached by this study is that humans follow nature instead of assuming a position at the top of the hierarchy governing life on earth. The distance between human and non-human animals is put to question and observations of the natural environment often leave the poet and readers with more questions than answers about nature. Questions about the essence of what it means to be human become pertinent at the same time.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Since the early 1980s graphic narratives (novels) have developed into a nuanced and complex medium of creative expression. Experimentation with aesthetics, form and narrative content have resulted in a mode of expression that allows authors and artists to represent themselves and others multimodally on the page. These representations display a dynamic range through which fiction and non-fictional narratives can be shared in graphic form. This narrative strategy has been used by numerous artist-authors to detail auto/biographical accounts of historical events and lived experiences. With the aim of contributing to the growing field of literary and visual analysis regarding auto/biographic and fictive graphic narratives, this study examines a selection of contemporary graphic narratives from specific geo-political and socio-cultural spaces such as Israel, Iran, Lebanon, Palestine and Rwanda. The selected texts this thesis examines are Footnotes in Gaza (2009), A Game for Swallows: To Die, To Leave, To Return (2012), Deogratias: A Tale of Rwanda (2005) and Smile Through the Tears: A Story of the Rwandan Genocide (2007). The aim is to demonstrate how the artist-authors relay individual (private) and communal (public) traumatic experiences in graphic form. This thesis suggests that graphic narratives can convey and “utter” public and private trauma in unique ways through the interplay of verbal-visual media. By making use of aesthetic styles that may be culturally influenced or rendered in an evocative manner, the narratives are able to express narrative content to the reader, who then becomes witness to the trauma. The use of this medium also allows artist-authors to position marginalised and traumatised subjects at the forefront of the narrative, adding to the larger historical archive and understanding of historical events. This medium allows for the transmission of traumatic experiences and alternative perspectives to give increased comprehension of how trauma affects various subjects in an effort to reconfigure misconceptions of their suffering.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The primary function of paintings and novels in Western culture has historically been considered the depiction or description of reality. Over the course of the last century, however, the inherent reflexivity of both art and literature has become progressively more insistent and programmatic, in such a way as challenges the relationship between form and the world. A re-thinking of the role of representation is thus central to both modernism and postmodernism. This thesis is an investigation into the relationship between modern and postmodern reflexivity. Through the close examination of four artists who serve as case studies, I argue that literary and artistic modernism‟s emphasis on form and subjectivity, as well as the tendency of postmodern art and writing to flaunt its own status as rhetoric/fiction, are different facets of a continuous response to a rapidly changing world. Using the insights of post-structuralist theory, I suggest that whereas modernism‟s reflexive drive is directed towards truth and self-knowledge, postmodern reflexivity is centrally concerned with the elusive, continually shifting nature of meaning. What emerges in the light of the practice of individual artist and authors, however, is that the modern and postmodern reflexive modes are not necessarily mutually exclusive, but can co-exist, producing a vital and necessary tension.

AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Beskrywing en uitbeelding van die werklikheid word geskiedkundig as die kernfunksies van skilderye en die roman in die Westerse kultuur beskou. Gedurende die laaste eeu het die inherente refleksiwiteit van beide kuns en letterkunde toenemend meer programmaties en sistematies geword. Dit het geskied op „n wyse wat die verhouding tussen vorm en die wêreld uitdaag. „n Herbesinning van die rol van uitbeelding of representasie is gevolglik van sentrale belang vir beide modernisme en postmodernisme. Hierdie tesis is „n ondersoek na die verwantskap tussen moderne en postmoderne refleksiwiteit. Deur „n noukerige ondersoek van vier kunstenaars se werk, stel ek voor dat die letterkundige en artistieke klem van modernisme op vorm en subjektiwiteit, sowel as die gebruiklike kenmerk van retoriek/fiksie, verskillende aspekte is van „n voortdurende weerkaatsing op „n vinnig veranderende wêreld is. Deur die teoretiese perspektiewe van post-stukturalisme toe te pas, stel ek voor dat modernistiese refleksiwiteit neig na die waarheid en selfkennis, terwyl postmoderne refleksiwiteit fokus op die onbepaalde en veranderlike aard van betekenis. Nietemin, uit my kritiese beskouing van die kreatiewe praktyk van afsonderlike kunstenaars en skrywers blyk dit dat die modernistiese en postmodernistiese refleksiewe benaderinge nie noodwendig mekaar uitsluit nie, maar saam kan bestaan en „n dinamiese en noodsaaklike spanning skep.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation provides a reading of the fantasy novel series Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling and The Belgariad by David Eddings. In particular this dissertation endeavours to recuperate a literary critical methodology rooted in Myth Criticism. Further, it seeks to demonstrate the continued relevance and necessity of this form of criticism in our postmodern era and to refute some of the commonplaces of postmodern critical theory, specifically the poststructuralist scepticism towards the idea of universal truth and individual agency. Using Jungian theory, myth critics ranging from Laurence Coupe to Joseph Campbell and incorporating various postmodern theorists, like the contemporary Marxist theorist Terry Eagleton, and fantasy critics like Brian Attebery and Ursula LeGuin, this dissertation aims to give a well-rounded analysis of the merits of looking at fantasy as a legitimate field of literary study. Moreover, this dissertation seeks to illustrate the fact that fantasy is capable of informing readers’ interaction with the ‘real’ world and that this genre allows for insight into identity formation in present day reality. The chief structure used to explore these claims is an analysis of the Hero’s Journey.

AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: This dissertation provides a reading of the fantasy novel series Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling and The Belgariad by David Eddings. In particular this dissertation endeavours to recuperate a literary critical methodology rooted in Myth Criticism. Further, it seeks to demonstrate the continued relevance and necessity of this form of criticism in our postmodern era and to refute some of the commonplaces of postmodern critical theory, specifically the poststructuralist scepticism towards the idea of universal truth and individual agency. Using Jungian theory, myth critics ranging from Laurence Coupe to Joseph Campbell and incorporating various postmodern theorists, like the contemporary Marxist theorist Terry Eagleton, and fantasy critics like Brian Attebery and Ursula LeGuin, this dissertation aims to give a well-rounded analysis of the merits of looking at fantasy as a legitimate field of literary study. Moreover, this dissertation seeks to illustrate the fact that fantasy is capable of informing readers’ interaction with the ‘real’ world and that this genre allows for insight into identity formation in present day reality. The chief structure used to explore these claims is an analysis of the Hero’s Journey.

▼ This study examines religiosity in Ernest J. Gaines’s fiction. Though some critics acknowledge the existence of religion in Gaines’s work, most of them gloss over the topic. Generally, they conclude that the author mistrusts religion, religion fails the characters, and his preacher personas are perfunctory. I argue that such criticism fails to address fully the role of religion in Gaines’s writing. Because of the ubiquitousness of religious circumstance, I argue that Gaines expresses neither rejection of nor ambivalence towards religion. Instead, I offer evidence that his stance is paradoxical. Characters who are atheists or claim to have lost faith are the characters who most epitomize Christian traditions and characteristics. Many use preacherly techniques such as speech and mannerisms, and others exemplify biblical characters through parallel lifestyles. Though several characters claim to reject religion, Christian principles impact and guide their behavior and thought. Additionally, Gaines inserts preacher personas whose words and actions seem to support the notion that the men are perfunctory; however, their roles as motivators and activists suggest otherwise. Gaines also acknowledges African American folk tradition with his insertion of folkloric preachers and conjurers. Though Gaines’s primary themes are manhood issues, I argue that religion plays a role in creating and maintaining a sense of manhood. To analyze Gaines’s treatment of religion, I discuss his use of four elements of narratology: the imagery of falling, rhetorical manipulation, the dismantling of stereotype, and the incorporation of biblical allusion and typological symbolism and archetypes. My primary argument is that Ernest Gaines promotes orthodox Christianity by presenting it in an acceptable modern form. Utilizing a range of characters who exhibit varied attitudes toward religion, from unquestioning acceptance to outright rejection, Gaines “seemingly” advocates negative attitudes toward Christianity, but this exploitation of the negative repeatedly serves as a segue to reveal a positive update. In three of J. M. Coetzee’s recent novels, Disgrace (1999), Elizabeth Costello (2003), and Slow Man (2005), the South African author explores notions of authorship and challenges the possibilities of the sympathetic imagination. The notion of the sympathetic imagination has roots in Romanticism, and it connotes inhabiting another in order to understand or interpret. Romantic poet John Keats described the poet as “continually in for [sic] and filling some other body” (Letter to Richard Woodhouse), and Coetzee addresses the notion of the sympathetic imagination in his work. There are two facets of the sympathetic imagination: that which governs social relations and that which authors and creative minds attempt to claim as a driving force behind their work. It is important not to conflate the two separate facets of the sympathetic imagination. The social facet encourages good citizenship and allows humankind to behave in humane ways. It counters one’s private desire for mastery and balances self-interest with self-sacrifice; the sympathetic imagination helps others attain their goals and places others’ needs alongside one’s own selfishness. A sympathetic imagination is an essential quality in society, yet it will always yield only partial success. It cannot achieve complete success because truly inhabiting and embodying another living person is simply impossible, but in fiction, Coetzee explores the possibilities and limits of the sympathetic imagination at the level of language and metaphor. The other facet of the sympathetic imagination is often claimed by authors, poets, and artists to allow them to inhabit the subjects of their creativity. Coetzee tests the limits of authorial claims that writing is accomplished by applying a sympathetic imagination. In doing so, he creates metaphysical frames in which his own author-characters interact with other characters to reveal that some characters resist being written. In these metaphysical frames of fiction, Coetzee suggests that an author’s sympathetic imagination will never have total success; he sets forth a notion of partial success that helps address what is gained when the sympathetic imagination runs up against limits. My argument is that the authors and characters in these three novels attempt acts of sympathetic imagination and recurrently encounter limits. Coetzee questions perceived notions of authorship and the possibilities of the sympathetic imagination without offering alternatives. He critiques common notions of authorship and character writing but offers no real solutions.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: JRR Tolkien’s epic romance The lord of the rings (1954-5) has left a lasting impact on the literary landscape. With his magnum opus, the South African-born author elicited much criticism from various quarters – literary as well as in other fields – but after 60 years and almost as many translations in different languages, the book’s popularity still shows no sign of decline. On the one hand this bears testimony to the void that Tolkien filled – offering people in modern society an escape to a world where things are simpler and the line between good and evil is easier discernible. But the popularity of The lord of the rings extends further than the obvious narrative and is deeply rooted in Tolkien’s love of words and language, the true motivation behind the creation of his masterpiece. This love, manifest in his distinctive writing style, contributes greatly to the success of the book. This study shows that The lord of the rings can indeed be translated into Afrikaans without detracting from the source text. Through practical translation of selected excerpts from the book, the thesis examines various aspects of Tolkien’s writing style, among which archaism, poetry and the portrayal of different characters. An annotation of the different translated excerpts emphasizes translation challenges, and offer possible solutions. Translation challenges are categorized using Christiane Nord’s categorization of translation problems. A functionalist approach is followed, with replication of Tolkien’s use of language as the main function to observe, and special emphasis placed on the investigative work required of the translator to source Tolkien’s careful choice of words. Tolkien’s writing style offers many challenges to the translator but if those challenges can be overcome, it offers a vast opportunity for the further development of Afrikaans – not only for translating classical works but also for creating new works in Afrikaans with the same versatility which Tolkien utilized in English.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study is divided into five chapters. The first chapter which marks the introductory chapter deals with the general introduction to the entire study, the scope of the study, statement of the aim and objectives of this study, also looks at the research methods and gives St J Page Mbalana Yako's brief biographical sketch. The second chapter provides a brief theoretical background to the study of poetry. This forms the basis upon which the entire study will rest as it provides different poetic devices and stylistics, which reveal what makes poetry. The third and fourth chapters concentrate on a critical evaluation of Yako's poems. The poetry, which is presented in these chapters, is selected from Yako's anthology entitled Ikhwezi. It represents a particular genre from a wide range of poetic forms that Yako has written. Chapter three concentrates on educators and the achievements of certain individuals. Chapter four concentrates on traditional leaders. It is in this chapter that Yako displays his expertise in the use of excellent and appropriate poetic devices and stylistics in his poetry. The fifth chapter contains general conclusions drawn from the entire study. Translations are provided for each poem and are contained in the appendix that is found at the end of this study, which is immediately followed by the bibliography. Yako's endeavour to bring light to the nation through poetry is admirable. Further research will unearth more art and craft in this author's poetry.

AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie is verdeel in vyf hoofstukke. Die eerste hoofstuk bied In algemene inleiding tot die hele studie. Dit omskryf die omvang van die studie, die doelstelling en oogmerke, die navorsingsmetodologie, en gee In kort biografiese skets van St. J. Page Mbalana Yako. Die tweede hoofstuk gee 'n kort teoretiese agtergrond oor die studie van poësie. Dié hoofstuk dien as die basis vir die hele studie, omdat dit verskillende poëtiese middele en stylvorme uitlig wat die verskynsel van poësie verklaar. In die derde en vierde hoofstukke word gefokus op In kritiese evaluering van Yako se gedigte. Die gedigte wat in hierdie hoofstukke aangebied word, is geselekteer uit Yako se bloemlesing, getiteld Ikhwezi. Dit verteenwoordig 'n sekere genre uit In wye reeks poëtiese vorme wat deur Yako gebruik is. Hoofstuk drie se fokus is op opvoeders en die prestasies van sekere individue, en hoofstuk vier konsentreer op tradisionele leiers. ▼ John Ronald Reul Tolkien (1892-1973) was an Oxford trained philologist, professor (don) at Oxford, noted scholar, and author of high fantasy literature. His The Lord of the Rings trilogy (TLOR) has sold over 150 million copies worldwide making it the second bestselling work of fiction of all time (“The Lord of the Rings,” 2014). His popularity has resurged, though it never really waned, with Peter Jackson’s big screen adaptation of Tolkien’s most famous work The Lord of the Rings (2001-2003), also in trilogy form, winning multiple Oscar Awards, and grossing over 3 billion dollars worldwide (“The Lord of the Rings,” 2014). More recently, Jackson’s three part installments of the precursor to TLOR, The Hobbit (2012-2014), have also proved highly successful in movie format. As has been long noticed by fans and critics alike, Tolkien’s works, TLOR, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion (his legendarium of Middle-earth or Arda), and other lesser known works like The Adventures of Tom Bombadil (TATB) are permeated with ecological themes and tropes. According to Morgan (2010), Tolkien’s ecology is “[grounded in a] creation-centered ethic of stewardship . . . . that holds the potential to re-enchant the world” (p. 383). Further, Morgan (2010) also says, that “The story . . . possesses significant pedagogical potential, albeit implicit in nature" (pp. 383-384). Obviously, at least to many, the Earth is in a state of ecological crisis. My dissertation investigates ecology through select high fantasy works of J. R. R. Tolkien. Specifically, I intend to address what can be construed by studying the enigmatic character of Tom Bombadil, while giving due consideration to other characters who represent or are a party to ecological concerns. This dissertation will prove that the study of Bombadil is a boon to ecological education in the forms of autodidacticism, ecopedagogy, and ecoliteracy by showing readers how the Earth should be treated and with regard to changing our current anthropocentric mindset to one that embraces a respect and reverence for nature; that is, biophilia.; Ecology, Education, Tolkien Advisors/Committee Members: Glenn Hudak (advisor).

Summary: Based on Noam Chomsky’s argument that the faculty of language is primarily a tool of thought whose purpose is to interpret the world, this dissertation argues that reading literature provides a cognitive experience like John Gardner’s “Fictive Dream” that mimics our interpretive experience of the world. Literary experience exploits language as an epistemological faculty that makes aspects of the external world intelligible. Yet the faculty of language is also capable of evoking entirely mental worlds that do not reflect the mindexternal world. Because the literary experience is entirely mindinternal, even the cultural knowledge we bring into play for its understanding still relies on innate features of language. Thus, during the act of reading, we hold this cultural knowledge in abeyance, allowing the text to structure how we bring it to bear on the experience as a whole. A scientific approach to literature can help uncover principles to further elucidate the literaryepistemological experience. Whereas much literary criticism assumes that a critic’s purpose is to mine a text for its deeper meaning, this dissertation argues for a Cognitive Formalist approach in which criticism serves not simply to explain the experience evoked by any particular text according to linguisticepistemological principles, but also to evaluate the moral implications of that specific textual experience. As a means of demonstrating potential implications of a scientific cognitive approach to literary criticism based on linguisticepistemological understanding, the current study offers sample passages from J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. These passages allow us to offer first approximations of some explanatory principles of the literaryepistemological experience, such as the importance of fictive time and fictional event sequences, which in turn gives us greater insight into how, for example, verb tense and aspect contribute to the evocation of the action of fiction in the reader’s mind. Ultimately, the fictive vantage point constructed by the text allows the reader access to a complex moral framework in which fictive characters are understood to make choices that will in turn set the stage for the reader’s own ethical reception of the text and the experience it offers.
