▼ Wellness can mean many things to many people. Wellness does not just mean that a person is free from illness; wellness is a dynamic and continued process for oneself. Wellness has been defined by the National Wellness Institute as an active process through which people become aware of, and make choices towards, a more successful existence (9). Wellness models have been created to try and further explain the dimensions of wellness and their interactions with each other and the impact on quality of life. Wellness models have used dimensions of wellness such as physical, emotional, intellectual or mental, spiritual, environmental or occupational, psychological and social. The dimensions can further be described as a constant continuum for the human body to work towards optimal well-being in each area. Participation in wellness programs has been known to improve the quality of life and overall health of the participant. However, wellness outreach programming in rural areas often lacks the resources and professionals to provide available and quality programming for the people in such small communities. In January 2000, the United States Department of Health and Human Services launched Healthy People 2010, a 10 year goal to improve the health of Americans through health promotion and disease prevention (25). This initiative has brought increased awareness to the overall health of people in this nation. With increased awareness, rural areas are discovering ways to make wellness programs available and affordable to people in these areas. The purpose of this paper is to show how a wellness center and its programming can be initiated in a rural area, reveal the current perceived wellness of its members, and discuss the potential impact on the community to increase overall health and well-being of people in a rural setting. Demonstrating the process of an intervention type program, such as the wellness center and wellness programming in a small community, is significant to understanding the potential of providing wellness programming to other rural areas and the impact it may have on the wellness and overall health of people in the community. ▼ In today's world of work, change can be seen as a given. For companies to not only survive but to thrive, they need resilient and healthy employees. Healthy employees can deal more effectively with stress, which result from increases in work overloads, work pressure and job insecurity. They are more productive, deliver higher work output, and cope better with higher work demands. Studies show that people, who maintain a healthy lifestyle through regular exercise and healthy eating, have much fewer weight-related medical expenses, and are thus generally in better health. Poor health, on the other hand, results in higher absence from work, lower productivity and lower morale. This has a snowball effect in organisations, because the absence of unhealthy employees exacerbates the stress and work overload of those employees who are present at work and, in turn, negatively impact their morale. The aim of the study is to evaluate the impact of a physical wellness programme (referred to as a Corporate Wellness Programme or CWP) on employee absenteeism and motivation within a specific company. The evaluation was conducted using a mixed method approach. It was performed on the pilot study of the CWP. Hundred and thirteen people participated on a voluntary basis. The programme ran over six months (December 2008 to May 2009). A health risk assessment (HRA) includes glucose, blood pressure, cholesterol tests and a body mass index (BMI) and was conducted on all the participants before they embarked on the programme, as well as after completing the programme. The pre- and post-tests of the health risk assessment were statistically compared to evaluate whether participation in the programme affected the physical health of the participants. After the programme, focus group discussions were held with a sample of 36 of the 113 participants to assess their experience of the programme. Absenteeism data were used as an indirect measure to determine the impact of the programme on absenteeism. The results from the health risk assessments indicated that the systolic blood pressure and cholesterol levels were significantly lower after the programme. From the focus group discussions it appeared that participants reported less absenteeism from work due to illness. They further reported an improvement in their mood, attitude toward work, sleeping patterns, eating habits and sense of overall wellbeing during participation in the programme. ▼ The study explores employees’ perceptions of Employee Health and Wellness Programme at the Southern Region in the Department of Public Works (DPWs) in KwaZulu-Natal. The objectives of the study includes to investigate employees’ perceptions on the implementation of EHWP, to determine factors hindering the successful implementation of the EHWP, to assess the level of awareness and the extent of utilisation of the EHWP in the organisation of focus, to examine the benefits of EHWP to both the employee and the focal organisation, and to identify measures that will help to address the challenges that are associated with the implementation of EHWP in the focal organisation. The study adopted the interpretivist paradigm as the main research philosophy to investigate the phenomenon. The study also employed the inductive approach, where the researcher was part of the investigation process. An exploratory study was adopted in which the nature of the research problem was clarified and defined. A qualitative research method was used to investigate the phenomenon. The study was located at the Southern Region in the Department of Public Works in KwaZulu-Natal. The target population of the study was 250 and a purposive sampling technique was used to select 20 participants for the study. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with the participants, where qualitative data were gathered. A pilot study was first conducted before the actual interviews took place. Data quality control was ensured through trustworthiness and credibility. Qualitative data collected from the participants were transcribed and analysed manually using thematic analysis. Ethical approval was obtained from Humanities and Social Science Research Committee of the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Findings emanating from the study reveal that employees have different perceptions of the utilisation of EHWP which include EHWP is an intervention for alcoholics, EHWP is trustworthy and confidential and self-stigmatisation. Furthermore, findings show that the factors affecting the implementation and utilisation of EHWP in DPWs includes high cost and expenditure, lack of support from management, inadequate resources and unavailability of EHWP professionals. In light of the findings, various recommendations were made which includes leadership support towards the implementation of EHWP, provision of adequate resources, effective and efficient communication on existence of EHWP, building relationships and partnerships with the EHWP service providers and monitoring and evaluation of EHWP. ▼ This study was undertaken in ILembe Health District, which is located in the Province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. A district sponsored workplace health and wellness program was implemented in 2012. Gymnasium equipment was procured and a 2 hour weekly concessional physical fitness allowance was afforded to enrolling employees. Majority of employees were envisaged to enrol given that private institutions charged for such services. Despite the district’s investments in the programs, the 2012/13 quarterly report recorded a diminutive 12% enrolment in the physical fitness programs. Further exploration was crucial since employee wellness was an integral component of the District’s strategic intent, and insufficient literature existed to comprehend this phenomenon. Managers concerns about low staff utilization of the programs stimulated interest in studying this phenomenon. The objectives of this study, was to examine ILembe Health District employee’s perceptions of the workplace health and wellness fitness program. Furthermore, this study aimed to identify factors that have a bearing on employee enrolment trends. A survey was conducted which applied a quantitative cross sectional survey design. Respondents rated their interests and perceptions of the health and wellness fitness program over a period of 3 months using a four point Likert-Scale measurement tool. All respondents completed consent forms which stated that their details and responses would be confidential. Respondents were also informed that they reserve the right to withdraw from the study at any time, if they so desired. The data was analysed utilizing SPSS version 21.0 statistical procedures. There was an approximate overall 50:50 split in terms of respondents travelling less or more than the 5 km distance to work. This is useful as the even groupings allowed for direct comparison of the factors under section analysis. The response rate was deemed sufficient in that, of the 170 questionnaires despatched, 150 (88%) was returned rendering the statistics useful for generalization of results to the target population. The study findings confirms that ILembe Health District employees believe that the lack of consultation, absence of rewards, poor levels of privacy during exercise, insufficient equipment to exercise, the lack of group and outdoor sport codes, voluntary participation in programs, the incorrect placement of health and wellness program in the health promotion section, coupled with the firm belief that the inadequacy of time to exercise due to the insufficient concession hour offered are factors that are propelling poor utilisation of programs and low levels of enrolment in the health and physical fitness program. Furthermore, findings of the study revealed that employees in ILembe Health District are vulnerable to non-communicable diseases due to poor health-seeking habits. ▼ What a counselor-in-training believes about his or her ability directly impacts his/her persistence and ability to perform a task successfully. Evidence shows a link between academic factors and counselor self-efficacy with trainees who perform better academically being more confident in their ability to counsel. In addition, there is a strong probability that part of a trainee‟s belief system and subsequent behavior choices are connected with his or her total wellness. Having a higher self-efficacy can improve counselor competence and give insight into the gatekeeping process. Because there is limited research to address academic factors and total wellness of counseling self-efficacy (CSE) of counselors-in-training (CIT), this study concentrates on the gap in the educational and counseling literature. This research documents the extent to which these variables can contribute to the prediction of CSE of CIT. Specifically, academic factors, wellness and CSE of CIT were assessed across randomly selected CACREP accredited master‟s-level counseling programs. Liaisons were contacted, provided a description of the study, and invited to ask any questions related to their students‟ involvement in the study. Those who agreed to allow participation in their program were asked to forward an email introducing the study and requesting participation to counseling practicum and internship students at their institution. In the email, potential participants were provided with directions for accessing and completing the survey, contact information for the researcher, and approximate deadline for completion. Each participant was asked to complete a consent form, a demographic questionnaire, the 5F-Wel, and the Counselor Activity Self Efficacy Scale. There were 2 hypotheses considered in this study. First, a significant relationship will exist between academic factors and the CSE of CIT. This hypothesis was not supported. A significant relationship will exist between the total wellness score and the CSE of CIT. Regression analysis revealed that the complete model including all 5 predictor variables did not significantly predict CSE of CIT. This model accounted for only 6 % of the variance of CSE of CIT. Thus, this hypothesis was not supported. These findings indicate the need for additional research to examine which factors contribute to the CSE of CIT. Advisors/Committee Members: Joshua C. ▼ Previous studies demonstrate that weight loss has many benefits, but research has yet to focus on how a physically healthy lifestyle is beneficial to teachers in our schools. Although past research has provided insight into how emotional and occupational wellness impacts stress, job burnout, and self-efficacy, few studies focus on how the physical aspect of wellness plays a role in the teacher’s ability to create a classroom that is healthy, and most importantly, effective. This research study was conducted as a phenomenological study of six White female urban school teachers who have transitioned from obesity to wellness. A qualitative research framework was adopted to answer five research questions: (1) how do teachers define obesity? (2) How do teachers define wellness? (3) How do teachers describe their teaching behaviors as it relates to obesity? (4) How do teachers describe their teaching behaviors as it relates to wellness? And (5) how do teachers describe their transition from obesity to wellness in the school environment? Results of this study yielded the following themes related to the experience of the six white female urban school teachers: (1) the teachers had varying definitions of obesity that reflect the stigma attached to obesity in our country, while the teachers definitions of wellness reflect an understanding of its synergistic nature, with a heavy focus on physical and emotional wellness; (2) due to the stigma attached to obesity and the social consequences of obesity, the teachers have become hyper-aware of the comments and judgments made about obese people, leading to mental and emotional consequences that impact behavior inside the school environment, their self-esteem, and their self-efficacy; (3) by transitioning from obesity to wellness, the teachers experienced Teacher Regenesis, in which energy and confidence gained from physical activity is diffused into other areas of their lives. The success experienced in physical exercise and weight loss also allows for an infusion of healthy wellness behaviors in other areas of their lives; and (4) the transition period from obesity to wellness was influenced by both stressors and resources that were available to them inside the school environment. ▼ Many companies are becoming increasingly aware of the issues pertaining to employee well-being or wellness. There has been a growing public interest with regards to integrating wellness activities with the responsibilities of the employer. This shift with regard to healthy workplaces and employees that are empowered represents trends between organizational well-being and positive psychological states. As a result of this, various programmes were introduced such as Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) and Employee Wellness Programmes (EWPs) to address the issues of wellness in the workplace. Employee Wellness Programmes are defined as intervention strategies aimed to promote the well-being of workers. The study was conducted to establish the reasons employees either take up or do not take up services offered within the Employee Wellness Programme at the Ministry of Health in order to provide guidelines to make the programme effective and to render the programme more cost effective. A stratified random sampling method was used to select the samples. Data were collected using a selfadministered questionnaire. The findings of the study revealed that majority of the respondents (88.3%) were aware of the existence of the Employee Wellness Programme. The result also showed that 48.3% of the respondents rated the programme as good whereas 25% rated it as fair. Furthermore, the results revealed that 48.3% of the respondents have attended activities offered by the programme whilst 45% have not. The most common barrier that prevented employees from participating was inconvenient time or location of the activities (41.7%). Lastly, the majority of the respondents (73.3%) indicated that the ministry should use incentive to encourage employee participation. There is need for senior management to show commitment for the programme, monitoring and evaluation of the programme, strengthening communication, establishing proactive wellness committees, creating a wellness culture among employees as well as providing incentives for participating in the programme. ▼ Background: Mandatory school wellness policies, written under federal laws, exist to improve school nutrition and physical activity. However, many school districts, especially those financially disadvantaged, have not been able to implement policies due to resource and organizational barriers. Schools benefit by connecting with external facilitators such as local universities, community health organizations, and national and/or state funding agencies in order to carry out policies that strengthen school wellness practices. Objective: To facilitate wellness project development and implementation in three Connecticut districts with Title 1 schools with concurrent programming at the elementary, middle and high school levels. Design: A quasi-experimental evaluation of school wellness program implementation using qualitative and quantitative process and outcome indicators. Participants: Fifteen high-need schools within Meriden, Norwich, and Windham Public School Districts. Procedure: Three school wellness programs were layered into each district to target all school-aged groups (elementary, middle and high). Key players were identified at the district and school level. The Project Coordinator worked with the districts to develop action plans, provided guidance and school wellness resources, and helped foster connections with local and national partners. University of Connecticut (UCONN) undergraduates provided sound nutrition education. Data was collected through informal verbalizations and observations, formal exit interviews with key players, taste test surveys provided to students at cafeteria-wide and classroom events, and pre and post school wellness environment surveys. Results: Approximately 6,500 K-12 students were reached through direct wellness programming strategies. A total of 190 UCONN technical assistance hours were dedicated to Layering Project districts. District action plans incorporated goals to increase awareness of sound nutrition, gradually transition to new meal patterns, and encourage 60 minutes per day of physical activity. Key players informally reported that undergraduate UCONN students enhanced the subject of wellness and were identified as mentors to increase target audience enthusiasm and motivation to try healthy products at taste tests. During exit interviews, key players reported that the Layering Project created new school physical activity and nutrition opportunities and strengthened those already in existence. District students were recognized as the most impacted stakeholders and the Project Coordinator was the most valuable resource for wellness implementation. Taste tests incorporated more direct nutrition education and provided a gateway for introducing future menu items to students. School Wellness Environment Surveys demonstrated that parent involvement was minimal; however, community involvement grew throughout project implementation.
