The Veneridae family its among the most commercially harvested shellfish by fisheries and aquaculture in the world, the sediment clam Anomalocardia brasiliana occurs throughout the Brazilian coast and has great importance for artisanal fisheries. In recent years sparked national interest by cultivation of mollusks. This study aimed at the first article the filtration and ingestion rate of A. brasiliana under different conditions of light, temperature and salinity on laboratory conditions in three separate experiments, analyzed by factorial analysis of variance, followed by Duncan test, with significance level of P <0.05. The best results for the filtration and ingestion rates were obtained in the absence of light at room temperature of 27C, and salinity of 30gL-1. The second article aimed to evaluate the reproduction of the species in laboratory comparing the induction method of temperature variation, addition of microalgae and gametes into the water with the method of natural spawning, without application of stimuli. The results showed that the gonads were well developed before and after the period of maturation, considered mature. Spawning occurred in both treatments, but no significant difference according to the t test with significant differences at p <0.05 were found. But the best results were obtained at natural spawning during the handling of the shellfish in the maturation step or after the experiments. In this method obtained over 900 thousand eggs. These results can help to improve conditions for breeding and obtaining larvae in laboratory, and thus reduce production costs and improve technology to species.

A família Veneridae está entre os moluscos bivalves mais explorados comercialmente pela pesca e aquicultura no mundo, o marisco de sedimento Anomalocardia brasiliana ocorre em toda costa brasileira e apresenta grande importância para pesca artesanal. Nos últimos anos despertou interesse na malacocultura nacional. O presente estudo analisou no seu primeiro artigo a taxa de filtração e ingestão da A. brasiliana frente a diferentes condições de luz, temperatura e salinidade em condições de laboratório em três experimentos distintos, submetidos a Análise de Variância Fatorial, seguido pelo Teste de Duncan, com nível de significância p<0,05. Os melhores resultados referentes às taxas de filtração e ingestão foram obtidos na ausência de luz, em temperatura ambiente de 27C, e salinidade de 30 g.L-1. O segundo artigo teve como objetivo avaliar a reprodução da espécie em laboratório comparando o método de indução por variação da temperatura, adição de microalgas e gametas na água por desova natural, sem aplicação de estímulos. Os resultados demonstraram que as gônadas apresentavam-se bem desenvolvidas antes e após o período de maturação, consideradas maduras. A desova ocorreu nos dois tratamentos, mas não houve diferença significativa de acordo com o Teste t com diferenças significativas quando p <0,05. A espécie Anomalocardia brasiliana é um molusco bivalve marinho que apresenta grande importância econômica e social para pesca artesanal no litoral brasileiro. O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a distribuição e abundância da Anomalocardia brasiliana na praia de Mangue Seco, Pernambuco, Brasil, estimando e relacionando as características de temperatura, salinidade e granulometria do sedimento com a distribuição e abundância da espécie. A área estudada é composta por 90% areia, possui salinidade máxima de 37 para o mês de janeiro e mínima de 26 para o mês de junho, já a temperatura mais elevada foi encontrada no mês de dezembro/2010 (37.6C) e a menor no mês de junho/2010 (24C). O maior valor médio de indivíduos coletados na praia de Mangue Seco foi de 263,6 org./m para o mês de dezembro/2010 e o menor valor foi do mês de janeiro/2011 com 127,38 org./m, os valores de comprimento médio encontrados para a região ao longo do estudo demonstram que no mês de menores valores de densidade ocorreu a menor média de comprimento com cerca de 16.55.7 mm, fato este que pode ser relacionado a um maior esforço sobre o estoque devido ao aumento na procura da carne da A. brasiliana.

The species Anomalocardia brasiliana is a marine bivalve mollusk that has great economic and social importance to artisanal fisheries in the Brazilian coast. This study aimed to evaluate the distribution and abundance of Anomalocardia brasiliana in Mangue Seco beach, Pernambuco, Brazil, estimating and relating the characteristics of temperature, salinity and sediment grain size with the distribution and abundance of species. The study area comprises 90% sand, salt has up to 37 for the month of January and a minimum of 26 months to June, as the highest temperature was found in the month of December/2010 (37.6 C) and the lowest June/2010 month (24 C). The highest average value of individuals collected in Mangue Seco beach was 263.6 org. / M for the month of December/2010 and lowest for the month was 127.38 with January/2011 org. / M, the values of average length found for the region over the study show that in the month of lowest density was the lowest average length of about 16.5 5.7 mm, a fact that may be related to an increased stress on the stock due to increased demand for meat from A. brasiliana.

Abstract: The ultrastructure of bivalve spermatozoa can be species-specific and often provide valuable taxonomic traits for systematic reviews and phylogenetic reconstructions. Transmission and scanning electron microscopy was an efficient tool to differentiate the spermatozoan structure of species sharing many conchological characters, which could lead to equivocal identification. We analyzed sperm ultrastructural features that were useful for taxonomic issues with regard to Isognomon bicolor and Isognomon alatus (Isognomonidae); Macoma constricta, Macoma biota and Tellina lineata (Tellinidae); Donax hanleyanus and Donax gemmula (Donacidae). The data revealed that the bivalve species studied here, except T. lineata, produce primitive-type spermatozoa, typical of marine invertebrates in which eggs are fertilized in the surrounding water. We, also, compared the ultrastructure of spermatozoa from the bivalves Anomalocardia brasiliana and Tivela mactroides (Veneridae). The spermatozoa of both species contain a curved nucleus with a short cone-shaped acrosome. There were six mitochondria and glycogen clusters in the middle piece of the T. mactroides sperm cell. Possibly, the glycogen clusters and the higher mitochondria number correspond to an adaptive advantage in turbulent waters. Increasing the sperm life expectance also increases the odds of finding the eggs and accomplishing fertilization. Oysters of the genus Crassostrea and mussels of the genus Mytella, commercially important in Brazil, were also investigated in this thesis. The sperm ultrastructure of the specimens described herein and molecular studies, confirm the presence of Crassostrea brasiliana (Ostreidae) in Cananéia. Spermatozoa of mussel specimens of the genus Mytella, from two populations living in distinct habitats (muddy-sand sediment and rocky shores), were examined by transmission electron microscopy. The spermatozoa of all specimens shared the same ultrastructural pattern suggesting that the analyzed specimens, which live in distinct habitats, indeed belong to a same species, which was identified as M. charruana (Mytilidae) based on conchological analysis. The presence of an axial rod in sperm cells upholds the inclusion of M. charruana in the subfamily Mytilinae. In conclusion the electron microscopy was an efficient method to solve some particular taxonomic issues. The present spermatozoan ultrastructural studies have provided new and welcome data about the families Isognomonidae, Veneridae, Tellinidae, Donacidae, Ostreidae and Mytilidae. The results showed in this thesis could be valuable in future phylogenetic analyses.
