▼ During the past decade various studies have been conducted on the medieval
bestiary and simultaneously much has been written on the life and work of the
medieval scholar and writer, Jacob
van Maerlant.
Van Maerlant's famous
encyclopaedic work,
Der Naturen B/oeme (Book of Nature) has been
thoroughly investigated in recent literary studies, though little has been done
to identify this work as encyclopaedic narrative.
The term, encyclopaedic narrative, is relatively unknown in Western
literature and therefore demands the research which is conducted in this
thesis. In the course of this study, the genre of encyclopedic narrative is
investigated and the Naturen 8/oeme is identified as a member of this
exclusive genre.
Edward Mendelson's article "From Dante to Pynchon" (1976) serves as the
starting point for this study, from where it continues its investigation into the
works of Jacob
Van Maerlant.
Van Maerlant's
Der Naturen 8/oeme is
compared to a unique set of qualities for the encyclopaedic narrative in
which corresponding points are identified. From this investigation it is shown
that
Der Naturen B/oeme qualifies as a member of the genre, encyclopaedic
narrative.; Baie navorsing oor die Middeleeuse Bestiarium is reeds gedurende die
afgelope dekade gedoen en baie is geskryf oor die lewe en werk
van Jacob

Westerse literatuur dien as aansporing tot die ondersoeke wat in hierdie
skripsie vervat word. In hierdie studie sal die genre
van die ensiklopediese
narratlef bespreek word.
Der Naturen Bloeme word as voorbeeld gebruik.
Die ensiklopediese narratief word bespreek na aanleiding
van die artikel
"From Dante to Pynchon" (1976) waarin Mendelson die term omskryf en
riglyne daarstel vir die tipering daarvan as genre. Uit die ondersoek blyk dit
dat die ensiklopediese narratief 'n genre is wat erkenning behoort te kry in
die literêre wêreld.
Die studie ondersoek ook die lewe en werk
van Jacob
van Maerlant wat as

▼ The intention of the empirical missiology is to systematically examine the reality of mission practice with the aid of empirical methods. To reach this aim the dissertation will attempt to combine empirical social science with missiology in a way that they positively complement one another throughout the whole process of research. This intradisciplinary procedure is new to missiology and therefore an important contribution to research. To form a basis, social as well as missiological research will be dealt with and von
der Vens empirical theology examined. For the hermeneutic methodological realization of the empirical missiology an empirical-theological praxis cycle will be developed consisting of seven individual stages of research. The missiological reflection of each stage is the minor cycle. This procedure guarantees firstly a strictly methodical way of working and secondly missiological relevance that takes the context of praxis seriously and serves the mission.

▼ Hierdie studie is onderneem om te bepaal watter determinante 'n rol speel in die beroepsbevrediging
van grondvlak maatskaplike werkers en watter gehalte
van die werksleweprogramme benut kan word om dit aan te spreek. Tydens die empiriese fase
van die studie is 'n vraelys aan die maatskaplike werkers
van die Vereniging vir Liggaamlike Gestremdes (streek Wes-Kaap) gesirkuleer waarin aannames oor beroepsbevrediging en gehalte
van die werkslewe getoets is. Die response bevestig 'n hoer arbeidsomset as die gemiddelde, 'n behoefte aan billike en regverdige vergoedingspakkette, bevorderingsgeleenthede, 'n werksomgewing wat werksekuriteit bied en 'n gebrek aan inspraak in die leierskap en bestuurstyl
van welsynsorganisasies. Die rol wat die supervisor kan speel figureer sterk sowel as die behoefte aan gehalte
van die werksleweprogramme soos, deelnemende bestuur, sensitiwiteitsopleiding, doelwitbestuur en spanwerk. Enkele aanbevelings vvord aan
administrateurs en supervisors gemaak oor die uitbou
van maatskaplike werkers se beroepsbevrediging en die benutting
van gehalte
van die werksleweprogramme sodat arbeidsomset bekamp en koste-effektiwitet verhoog kan word.; This study was undertaken to establish which determinants play a role in the job satisfaction of direct service social workers and what quality of worklife programmes can be utilised to address the problem. During the empirical phase of the study, a questionnaire was circulated to social workers of the Association for the Physically Disabled, Western Cape, in which suppositions regarding job satisfaction and quality of worklife was tested. Responses confirmed the need for fair remuneration packages, promotion opportunities, job security, a high labor turnover and a lack of participation in the management of welfare organisations. The role of the supervisor figures strongly. Quality of worklife programmes such as participatory management, sensitivity training,
management by objectives and teamwork are needed. Suggestions are made to administrators and supervisors concerning the development of job satisfaction and the utilisation of quality of worklife programmes to control labour turnover and improve cost effectiveness.

▼ An act of violence, be it personal or institution is an event that would distress most witnesses. Yet the
representation of violent acts in fictional forms as literature, drama and film often aestheticises that violence, with the result that it is possible to experience it without such distress. However, despite various conjectures being offered, no single and universal theory is possible. An aesthetic response to a
representation of violence is influenced to a large extent by the degree of aestheticisation produced by the author and/or director. In addition, the aestheticisation of violence is dependent upon, and an inevitable consequence of, the
representation of the violent. This dissertation is an endeavour to explore the issues that the paradox makes evident, to critique various hypotheses that have been offered as a solution, and to speculate upon a more comprehensive theory ofthe
representation and aestheticisation of violence

▼ The central tenet of the study is that language and madness are bound together, language both including madness and perpetuating the exclusion of madness as 'other'. The first chapter considers the
representation of madness in Atwood's novels The Edible Woman, Surfacing and Alias Grace from the perspective ofFoucauldian and Kristevan theories oflanguage and madness. Alias Grace becomes the focus in the second chapter. Here the syntax of madness is traced during Grace's stay in the mental asylum. Language, madness and sexuality are revealed as a palimpsest written on Grace's body. The final chapter looks at Grace's incarceration in the penitentiary and her dealings with the psychologist Dr. Simon Jordan where Grace's narrative tightly threads language and madness together. Underlying each chapter is a concern with how language and madness are in permanent interaction and opposition writing themselves onto society and onto Grace.

van die klient-verpleegkundige-verhoudings op kliente se keuse en volgehoue gebruik
van kontraseptiewe metodes het tot op hede baie min aandag geniet. Die doel
van hierdie studie was 'n ondersoek na die ongetroude klient se persepsie
van die verpleegkundige se houding. Die steekproef het bestaan uit 99 kliente (tussen die ouderdomme
van 15 en 50 jaar) wat die betrokke reproduktiewegesondheidsklinieke in die Kaapse Metropool besoek het. Die eerste 20 kliente wat die kliniek besoek het, is genader om 'n vraelys in te vul. Hierdie studie toon 'n algehele positiwiteit, naamlik 58,3% teenoor die houding
van geregistreerde verpleegkundiges. Die meerderheid
van die kliente (88,0%) het aangedui dat hulle weer die kliniek sal besoek wat dus die kliente se tevredenheid toon.; The effect of the client-registered nurse relationship on clients' choice and continuous use of contraceptive methods has until now received very little attention. The purpose
of this study was to explore unmarried clients' perception of the attitude of the registered nurse. The sample existed of 99 clients (between the ages of 15 and 50 years) who visited the relevant reproductive health clinics in the Cape Metropole. The first 20 clients who visited the clinic were approached to complete a questionnaire. This study shows an overall positivity of 58,3% with regard to the attitude of registered nurses. Most of the clients (88,0%) indicated that they would visit the clinic again, which indicate their satisfaction.

van die veranderingsproses op die funksionering
van 'n welsynsorganisasie te bepaal. 'n Literatuurstudie en empiriese studie is onderneem. Die navorsing het aangedui dat die redes vir verandering hoofsaaklik ekstern
van aard is, dat 'n hoe persentasie respondente nie altyd die noodsaaklikheid of rede vir verandering verstaan nie, en dat die meerderheid die kommunikasieproses en deurgee
van inligting nie altyd duidelik beleef nie. Die ondersoek dui verder aan dat die motivering
van grondvlak maatskaplike werkers deur die bestuurders nie onderskat moet word nie. Die deurgee
van inligting is positief ervaar, maar die werkers sou meer ondersteuning daarvan
van die bestuur wou ervaar. Tydens die studie is daar 'n beperkte mate
van weerstand gevind. Weerstand by werkers word egter beperk indien hulle ervaar dat hulle deel
van die proses is, voorberei word op verandering, sekuriteit nie be"invloed word nie en
hulle oor die nodige redes vir verandering ingelig wor

van Ohrigstad in Soutpansberg aangekom; 'n pioniersdorp, onder Ieiding
van Hendrik Potgieter, is gestig en primitiewe huise is opgerig. In 1855 het Stephanus Schoeman die Ieiding oorgeneem en die dorp na homself vemoem. Die plaaslike owerheid het bestaan uit die kommandant-generaal, 'n landdros met heemrade en ander regeringsamptenare sowel as dorpsbeamptes. Tropiese koorssiektes het soms epidemiese afmetings aangcneem en talle mense het gesterf soos die kerkhof met sy rye grafte getuig. Die nedersetters, gehard deur hul swerwersbestaan, het die siektes en ontberings verduur. Vir 16
van die 19 jaar was daar nie 'n vaste predikant nie tot ds N J
van Wannelo in 1864 hom in Schoemansdal gevestig het Hy het hom beywer vir die ophefftng
van die inwoners op geestelike en onderwysgebied. Die mense was konserwatief en meestal ongeletterd. Hulle was bedagsaam, maar daar was ook ongure en opstandige persone.
Hulle klere was eenvoudig en meestal tuisgemaak, en hulle het graag sosiaal verkeer. V erskeie beroepe is beoefen: houtsaery was betalend en hout was oorvloedig; jag was die winsgewendste, want wild en olifante was volop en jagprodukte, veral ivoor waarvan tonne verhandel is, het goeie markpryse behaal. Die swartes wat reeds in die gebied gewoon het, het die blankes met wanttoue bejeen. Blankes het hulle gevestig, grond toegeeien en onbeperk gejag, terwyl die swartes vir hulle moes werk en belasting betaal. Ongehoorsame swart hoofmanne is aangeval, vee is gebuit en vrouens en veral kinders is weggevoer as inboekelinge. Dit het tot openlike vyandelikhede gelei. Veldtogte is gevoer, maar die blankes kon die swartes, weens hulle oninneembare vestings, nie onderwerp nie. Die swartes het gewere op onwettige wyse bekom. Die handel het begin kwyn, smouse en handelaars het weggebly en die inwoners het verann en onder mekaar getwis. Die blankes het in die skans in Schoemansdal saamgetrek en
Paul Kruger is met 400 man deur die Transvaalse regering gestuur om die Venda te onderwerp. Die poging het misluk en op 15 Julie 1867 is Schoemansdal ontruim. Enkele maande later is 'n poging deur Schoeman aangewend om die dorp te herwin, maar ook dit was onsuksesvol. Schoemansdal sou nooit weer herbou word nie en was die eerste vesting wat die blankes aan die swart meerdetheid sou oorgee.; May 1848 a number of white settlers from Ohrigstad arrived in the Soutpansberg. Under the leadership of Hendrik Potgieter, a pioneer town was developed. In 1855 Stephan us Schoeman replanned and renamed the town. The local government consisted of the commandantgeneral, a landdrost, heemrade, government officials and town officers. The region was unhealthy and fever stricken. van hierdie navorsingstudie was om te bepaal of daar 'n verwantskap tussen stres en die persoonlikheidsweerstandsbronne koherensiesin, gehardheid en lokus
van beheer is. Middelvlakbestuurders (n=103) het selfbeoordelingsvraelyste oor stres, sin vir koherensie, gehardheid en lokus
van beheer voltooi. Die resultate
van die Pearson produkmoment korrelasie en chi-kwadraattoetse toon dat daar 'n statisties beduidende verwantskap tussen stres en koherensiesin, gehardheid en lokus
van beheer is. Dit blyk dat middelvlakbestuurders met 'n sterk koherensiesin beter in staat is om stres te hanteer as bestuurders met 'n lae koherensiesin. Hierdie bestuurders maak dus sin uit werkstressors en beskou lewenseise as betekenisvol en uitdagend. Die resultate dui aan dat bestuurders met 'n hoe inteme lokus
van beheer en outonomie minder stres ervaar en beter toegerus is om die negatiewe invloed
van stres teen te werk as bestuurders met 'n lae lokus
van
beheer en outonomie. Volgens hierdie navorsing het gehardheid nie 'n invloed op die ervaring
van stress.; The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship exists between stress and the resiliency sources of sense of coherence, hardiness and locus of control. Managers (N=l 03) at middle management level completed self-report questionnaires on stress, sense of coherence, hardiness and locus of control. Results from the Pearson product moment correlation and chisquare tests, indicate a statistical significant relationship between stress and sense of coherence, hardiness and locus of control. It seems as if managers at middle management level with a strong sense of coherence experience lower levels of stress than managers with a low sense of coherence. These managers derive sense from work stressors and view life's demands as meaningful and challenging. These results indicate that managers with a strong internal locus of control and autonomy will be better equipped to cope
with stress than managers with a low locus of control and autonomy. According to this study hardiness does not have an effects on stress.

menslikehulpbronontwikkeling waarvolgens die vaardighede
van werknemers ontwikkel kan word sodat
die organisasie kan aanpas by plaaslike en globale veranderinge.
Gestruktureerde mentorskap is vervolgens geidentifiseer as 'n geskikte metode om in die bestaande
behoefte te voorsien, aangesien mentorskap se loopbaan- en psigo-sosiale funksies die ontwikkeling
van
die professionele en persoonlike vaardighede
van die werknemer moontlik maak. Daarby is mentorskap
nie net voordelig vir die betrokkenes nie, maar dit hou ook besliste voordele in vir die organisasie en die
sektor waarbinne die organisasie werksaam is.
Die suksesvolle toepassing
van gestruktureerde mentorskap is egter daaraan onderhewig dat die
kontekstuele omgewing waarbinne dit toegepas gaan word, geskik moet wees, en werknemers moet
bereid wees om betrokke te raak by so 'n program.
'n Konseptuele raamwerk vir die bestudering
van mentorskap soos opgestel deur David Marshall Hunt en
Carol Michael is derhalwe aangepas om die verskynsel "mentorskap" deur middel
van 'n verkennende
literatuuroorsig te bestudeer.
Die bevindinge
van die literatuuroorsig word ondersteun deur 'n empiriese ondersoek
van die geskiktheid
van die Nasionale Biblioteek
van Suid-Afrika as kontekstuele omgewing vir die toepassing
van
mentorskap en die bereidwilligheid
van die werknemers
van hierdie biblioteekorganisasie om betrokke te
raak by die mentorskapproses. Die data wat ingesamel is, word ontleed en die gevolgtrekkings wat
gemaak word oor bogenoemde twee vereistes vir die suksesvolle toepassing
van mentorskap word
uiteengesit.
Die studie word afgesluit deur aanbevelings wat gemaak word oor aspekte
van die toepassing
van
mentorskap wat verdere navorsing regverdig, maar wat nie binne die bestek
van hierdie studie na behore
aangespreek kon word nie.; Structured mentoring was identified as a method to develop the professional and personal skills of the
employees of the National Library of South Africa in order to adjust to local and global changes.
A conceptual framework for the study of mentoring, as developed by Hunt and Michael, was therefore
critically adapted in order to investigate fully the phenomenon of "mentoring" by means of an exploratory
literature review. The findings of the literature review are supported by an empirical survey to test the
suitability of the National Library of South Africa as contextual environment for the application of
mentoring, as well as the willingness of its employees to participate in mentoring. This culminated in an
analysis and interpretation of the findings and formulation of conclusions regarding the two abovementioned
requirements for the successful application of mentoring.
The study ends with recommendations for further investigation into aspects of mentoring which could not
be covered in this study.

van voorskoolse kinders aan. Die voorskoolse kind met sy basiese emosies vanuit sielkundig opvoedkundige perspektief word in die studie
van naderby beskou. Tydens die studie is die basiese emosies volgens Plutchik (1980) wat bepalend vir die emosionele skoolgereedheid
van die skooltoetreder is, geidentifiseer. Na aanleiding
van nuwe insigte waartoe gekom is, het die navorser 'n eie emosionele skoolgereedheidsevalueringslys volgens Plutchik (1980) se basiese emosies antwerp, wat as 'n maatstaf vir die evaluering
van emosionele skoolgereedheid kan dien. 'n Empiriese ondersoek is onderneem om te bepaal of 'n aantal proefpersone volgens n emosionele skoolgereedheidsevalueringslys emosioneel skoolgereed is al dan nie. Emosionele tekorte is vanuit die emosionele skoolgereedheidsevalueringslys geidentifiseer, waarna diagnostiese en terapeutiese tegnieke vir emosionele skoolgereedmaking kortliks bespreek
is. Opvoedkundige sielkundiges kan die diagnostiese en terapeutiese tegnieke as hulpmiddel gebruik om emosionele tekorte, wat moontlik 'n blokkasie vir emosionele skoolgereedheid inhou, aan te spreek.; This stidu addresses the emotional school preparedness (readiness) of pre-primary children. The pre-primary child with his basic emotions from a psychological educational perspective is examined more closely in this study. During this study the basic emotions according to Plutchik {1980) that determine the emotional school readiness of the school entrant, were identified. On account of new insights gained, the researcher designed a school readiness evaluation list of her own according to Plutchik's (1980) basic emotions. This list can serve as a guideline for the evaluation of emotional school readiness. An empirical study was undertaken to determine whether a number of experimental subjects {children) were ready for school or not. Emotional deficiencies were identified by means of the
emotional school readiness evaluation list, whereafter diagnostic and therapeutic techniques for the emotional preparation of children were briefly discussed. Educational psychologists can use these diagnostic and therapeutic techniques as an aid to address emotional deficiencies, which may impede the emotional school readiness of children.

subject of teacher competences or knowledge has been a key issue in mathematics education reform. This study attempts to identify and analyze teacher competences necessary in the orchestration of a problem-centred approach to dynamic geometry teaching and learning. The advent of dynamic geometry environments into classrooms has placed new demands and expectations on mathematics teachers. In this study the Teacher Development Experiment was used as the main method of investigation. Twenty third-year mathematics major teachers participated in workshop and microteaching sessions involving the use of the Geometer’s Sketchpad dynamic geometry software in the teaching and learning of the geometry of triangles and quadrilaterals. Five intersecting categories of teacher competences were identified: mathematical/geometrical competences, pedagogical competences, computer and software competences, language and assessment competencies.

adolessente subkliniese depressie ervaar. Veranderinge en toenemende druk en eise eie aan die
adolessente-fase, bring by baie adolessente depressiewe gevoelens mee. Ten spyte
van hierdie
omstandighede is daar egter ook baie adolessente wat hierdie fase
van ontwikkeling sonder enige
noemenswaardige probleme deurloop.
Aaron Beck is
van mening dat dit nie die omstandighede opsigself is wat tot depressie aanleiding
gee nie, maar wel die betekenis wat individue aan omstandighede gee. Beck noem dat depressiewe
persone tot irrasionele oortuigings, foutiewe inligting-prosessering en disfunksionele outomatiese
gedagtes geneig is.
Om hierdie probleem aan te spreek is ses adolessente, wat subkliniese depressie ervaar, aan Beck se
kognitiewe terapie onderwerp. Die primere doel
van Beck se terapie is die regstelling
van
bogenoemde disfunksionele kognisies.

adolescents experience subclinical depression. Changes and increasing pressure and demands,
typical of the adolescent phase, causes many adolescents to experience depressing emotions. In
spite of these circumstances there are also many adolescents who go through this phase in
development without any significant problems.
Aaron Beck is of opinion that it is not the circumstances in and of itself that lead to depression but
rather the meaning that individuals attached to these circumstances. Beck mentions that depressive
people are inclined to irrational beliefs, erroneous information-processing and dysfunctional
automatic thoughts.
To address this problem, six adolescents who experience subclinical depression, were subjected to
Beck's cognitive therapy. The primary target of Beck's therapy is the correction of above
mentioned dysfunctional cognitions.
The conclusion is that when the dysfunctional cognitions of adolescents who experience subclinical
depression can be corrected, their depressive feelings will diminish.

▼ This study aims to investigate and explain how the L2 -facilitator can effectively employ
the various facilitation skills of language teaching in Afrikaans Second Language within
the Outcomes Based Education framework in the learner-centred classroom. The
facilitator is critical in providing an opportunity for multicultural learners to develop the
necessary language learning skills to enjoy Afrikaans Second Language/Additional
Language learning as an interesting learning experience within a positive learning milieu.
In the learner-centred U -classroom, learners too must accept responsibility for their own
and their peers' learning within the co-operative learning group. This study reveals how
the L2 -facilitator can develop the necessary knowledge and skills concerning groupwork,
such as the strategies enhancing L 2 -learning, effective group facilitation skills,
learner attitudes towards the facilitator, problem-solving skills, co-operative learning as a
control technique, communication, learners' behaviour and the advantages of groupwork.
Furthermore, elements of classroom negotiation and the facilitator's methods of
working in this negotiated partnership are also discussed.
Since language learning is integral to lifelong learning, multicultural learners must be
motivated to learn Afrikaans Second/ Additional language with greater enthusiasm. This
necessitates the L2 -facilitator creating an interesting, challenging and authentic language
learning environment where mutual respect and trust are emphasised. This study reveals
how the L2 -facilitator could develop his/her knowledge of task-based L2 -teaching and
use it with the effective techniques of facilitation and negotiation skills in the taskorientated
second language classroom to lead learners to effective Afrikaans L2 -learning.
The new National Language Standardisation Policy 200112002 necessitates the facilitator
of Afrikaans L 2 -teaching/learning within the Outcomes Based Education framework and
the revised Curriculum 2005 to be aufait with assessment and his/her role in assessment.
Being knowledgeable on the various criteria and strategies regarding assessment is
therefore imperative.
Finally, chapter five illustrates practically how the facilitator could plan, organise, base,
integrate and present authentic Afrikaans L 2 -lessons/work based on the theoretical
knowledge and aspects of facilitation skills, group-work, task-based learning and
