Abstract: In this work, a work function measurement system based on field emission retarding potential (FERP) using carbon nanotubes (CNT) as electrons source was developed. The system project and assembly followed procedures normally used in systems for ultra-high vacuum (UHV) such as the conductance, gas sources, processes, materials and types of measurements. The FERP system for work function measurements was validated using metallic thin films of aluminum (Al), gold (Au), platinum (Pt), barium (Ba) and calcium (Ca). The work function experimental values are in good agreement with the theoretical and experimental data reported in the literature by Michaelson, Skriver and Rosengaard. An electron emission microscopy system usually called Field Emission Microscopy (FEM) was designed and built for the study of electron sources. This system was used to analyse the emissions of different tips, the beam spread, the behavior of adsorbed gases and its influence on the current flow. Seven different types of CNTs were evaluated as electron sources having several advantages compared to tungsten tips. Among these advantages are the electron emission with electric field lower than 15 V/um; it was not observed occurrence of arcing; more stable electron emission and greater amplification factor. Abstract: The main propose of this work is to toward in modeling of general vacuum systems. In addition, the aims of this work are to create, develop and improve analytic and numerical mathematical tools in order to model and to analyze vacuum systems in detail. Two different modeling ways to vacuum systems have been considered, denoted discrete and continuum formulations. In the discrete formulation the vacuum systems are treated in a way such that inside the vacuum chamber the pressure as a function of time can be obtained from the specification of the gas and vapor sources, from the pumping line dimensions and from the choice of the vacuum pumps. The conductance and the gas sources were considered important to vacuum processes in general besides the mathematical expressions obtained to pumping speed curves of the vacuum pumps. The numerical analysis was done through the Euler-Heun and the Runge-Kutta of second and fourth order methods. In the continuum formulation the vacuum systems were modeled in a way such that the pressure can be determined in all parts and as a function of the time. To perform this modeling were defined specific conductance and specific throughput to general gas sources. Vacuum systems with one-dimension or tubular forms and two-dimensions or planar forms were studied in detail and exemplified with the definitions of the quantities and the appropriate partial differential equations boundary conditions. Abstract: The aim of this work was to obtain metallic and magnetocaloric bulk amorphous alloys through centrifugation and injection processes. In order to obtain metallic bulk amorphous alloys a vacuum injection apparatus was built. For testing the centrifugation and injection equipments, known metallic bulk amorphous alloys were used. The alloy classified as structural amorphous steel, Fe43,6355Cr4,925Co4,925Mo12,608Mn11,032C15,563B5,8115Y1,5, was obtained in bulk amorphous by centrifugation with a thickness of at least 1 mm. The Zr52,5Ti5Al10Cu17,9Ni14,6 and Cu55Zr30Ti10Ni5 alloys were obtained in bulk amorphous by injection. For obtaining amorphous alloys it was used three relevant rules: confusion principle, deep eutectics, and high viscosity. The Gd55Ga20Si20Ge3B2 alloy was obtained amorphous in bulk by centrifugation and showed the largest table-like magnetocaloric effect, ?T = 142 K for a magnetic field variation of 1 T, and it is the unique based-Gd magnetocaloric bulk amorphous alloy. The Gd50Al23Mn23B2Ga2 and Fe43,6355Cr4,925Co4,925Ni12,608Mn11,032C15,563B5,8115Y3,0 alloys were developed in this work and only obtained as amorphous alloys, not in bulk, using the splat-cooler equipment.
