▼ Distributed data processing platforms for cloud computing are important tools for large-scale data analytics. Apache Hadoop MapReduce has become the de facto standard in this space, though its programming interface is relatively low-level, requiring many implementation steps even for simple analysis tasks. This has led to the development of advanced dataflow oriented platforms, most prominently Apache Spark and Apache Flink. Those not only aim to improve performance, but also provide high-level data processing functionality, such as filtering and join operators, which should make data analysis tasks easier to develop. But without comparison data available, how would data scientists know which system they should choose? This research compares: Apache Hadoop MapReduce; Apache Spark; and Apache Flink, from the perspectives of performance, usability and practicality for batch-oriented data analytics. We propose and apply a methodology which guides the conception of multidimensional software comparisons and the presentation of their results. The methodology was effective, providing direction and structure to the comparison, and should serve as helpful for future comparisons. The results confirm that Spark and Flink are superior to Hadoop MapReduce in performance and usability. Spark and Flink were similar in all three considerations, however as per the methodology, readers have the flexibility to adjust weightings to their needs, which could differentiate them. We also report on the design, execution and results of a large-scale usability study with a cohort of masters students, who learn and work with all three platforms, solving different use cases in data science contexts. Our findings show that Spark and Flink are preferred platforms over MapReduce. Among participants, there was no significant difference in perceived preference or development time between both Spark and Flink. These results were included in the usability component of the multidimensional comparison.

▼ Geographic information systems (GIS) are tools used to facilitate locational decision making in interactive, graphic-based environments. GIS and interactive maps allow users to customize displays and manipulate data for accomplishing a variety of tasks, ranging from map interpretation to wayfinding and land use planning. Although originally adopted for professional use, GIS software is increasingly utilized by both expert and non-expert users. Despite the improved availability, training in cartographic design has not followed suit and studies claim that users often employ inefficient displays for task completion. Research on naïve realism indicates that people exhibit a bias for realistic depictions containing irrelevant, extraneous details, leading to increased cognitive load and decreased task performance. This dissertation explores how display realism affects decision making task performance when using a GIS. Prior studies examining naïve realism have primarily had users perform map reading and inference tasks with static displays. Natural resource management was selected as a test case because it often involves the use of geospatial tools and data and people with varying levels of GIS expertise. This research had expert and novice users utilize a GIS to perform site selection tasks for a natural resource management decision making scenario. The results indicate that increased display realism has a negative impact on task performance, especially with regards to task completion time. Individuals in both the expert and novice groups were influenced by naïve realism. It was observed that expert and novice users employed different strategies for task completion and the implications on task performance are discussed. Ultimately, the study results contribute to the theory of naïve realism and make recommendations that inform the use of task-appropriate graphic displays in an interactive mapping environment. ▼ Business processes combine human activities, information technology, business rules, and organizational activities. The emergence of radio frequency identification (RFID), web services, and mobile applications technology has led to innovations in business processes, but their impact on usability and process structural change is uncertain. New technology implementation may, for example, improve usability and information exchange, while increasing process complexity, or reduce complexity at the expense of usability or information exchange. This research identifies three independent metrics, structural complexity, technology usability and interaction complexity, to characterize the business process complexity. The study has two objectives: (1) to design business process metrics that may be used in evaluating process structure, the ease of technology use in business processes and the complexity of resource interactions; and (2) to find tradeoffs among three metrics with regard to improving business processes. Evaluation of complex structural processes involves determining whether they generally have a clear structure and are easy to analyze, understand, and explain. Structural complexity is studied with respect to different business process structures. The hypothesis for this research is that more distinct process structures will lead to complex processes. A developed structural complexity metric enables analysis of basic process structures and measures them using an information theoretical metric. Information theory characterizes the randomness, disorder or uncertainty of the occurrence of process structures. Furthermore, compared with other process measurement metrics, the structural complexity metric shows more robust result in sample processes from literatures. This structural complexity model is particularly useful for evaluating business processes’ static features. A usability complexity metric that combines human-computer interaction and cognitive science is utilized to evaluate the cognitive loading of a business process. The resulting model, Business Process Analysis in Goal, Operations Methodology, and Selections (BPA-GOMS), is composed of two attributes—the internal complexity of an activity and the interaction complexity. The internal complexity models user-level behaviors and how to perform the business process using cognitive theory. Interaction complexity is identified through a business process analysis that examines interactions with other resources, including employees, customers and computer programs. Usability and interaction complexity provide insights into node level and information exchange in business process analysis. A process with different routing probabilities could result in different complexity measurements due to variability in the occurrence of the business process flow. The operational behavior of the business process is studied here to determine the stable probability of process tasks. Apesar do aumento do número de métodos de inspeção de usabilidade de aplicações Web, a maioria destes métodos só é aplicada nas últimas etapas do processo de desenvolvimento, aumentando o custo de correção dos problemas encontrados. Esta dissertação de mestrado apresenta a técnica Web Design Usability Evaluation (Web DUE), uma técnica específica para inspeções de usabilidade de protótipos em papel (ou mockups). A técnica Web DUE tem por finalidade apoiar os inspetores na identificação de problemas de usabilidade durante as primeiras etapas do processo de desenvolvimento, visando assim à redução dos custos de correção dos mesmos. Para atingir esse objetivo, a técnica Web DUE sugere a divisão dos mockups em zonas de páginas Web e a avaliação de usabilidade dos mesmos com base em um conjunto de itens de verificação. Para simular a interação entre os mockups e o usuário e apoiar a detecção de defeitos de usabilidade, foi criada a ferramenta Mockup DUE. Tanto a técnica Web DUE quanto a ferramenta Mockup DUE tiveram sua construção e avaliação apoiada por experimentação. Esta dissertação apresenta: (a) como a técnica Web DUE foi elaborada com base na análise da extensão de um mapeamento sistemático; (b) o estudo de viabilidade da técnica Web DUE; (c) a criação da ferramenta Mockup DUE com base nos resultados do primeiro estudo de viabilidade da técnica; (d) o estudo de viabilidade da ferramenta Mockup DUE; e (e) a evolução das tecnologias propostas para a inspeção de mockups de aplicações Web.

Despite the increasing number of usability inspection methods for Web applications, most of these methods are being applied in later stages of the development process, which increases the cost of correcting the identified problems. This master degree thesis presents the Web Design Usability Evaluation (Web DUE) technique, a technique that was specifically crafted for the usability inspection of paper based prototypes (or mockups). The Web DUE technique aims at aiding inspectors in the identification of usability problems in earlier stages of the development process, thus reducing the cost of correcting them. To achieve this goal, the Web DUE technique suggests to divide mockups into Web page zones and, using a set of usability verification items, to check if the interface is usable or presents usability problems. To simulate interaction between the mockups and the user, and to support usability problems detection, we created the Mockup DUE tool. Both, the creation of the Web DUE technique and Mockup DUE tool, were supported by empirical validation. In this dissertation we present: (a) how we created the Web DUE technique based on the analysis of the results of a systematic mapping extension; (b) the feasibility study of the technique; (c) how the results from the empirical study helped in the creation of the Mockup DUE tool; (d) the feasibility study of the Mockup DUE tool; and (e) the evolution of the proposed technologies for the inspection of Web mockups.

Tillgänglighet på webben är ett fenomen som blivit allt mer uppmärksammat på senare tid, i synnerhet för myndigheter, i och med nya lagar och internationella standarder. Begreppet innebär att personer med funktionsnedsättningar ska kunna uppfatta, förstå, navigera och interagera med webben. Resultatet av denna studie visar dock på att även språk kan ses som en del av arbetet med tillgänglighet. Den ökade uppmärksamheten till trots har det visat sig att det i dagsläget finns många webbplatser med bristande tillgänglighet. Vissa av dessa brister går att koppla till hur man arbetar med tillgänglighet och de problem och utmaningar som finns i detta arbete, något som denna studie har syftat att undersöka. Studien har genomförts i en kvalitativ och tolkande anda genom en fallstudie på Migrationsverket som är en av 22 så kallade strategiska myndigheter med ett särskilt ansvar i funktionshinderspolitiken. Insamlingen av det empiriska materialet har gjorts med hjälp av sex intervjuer av fem olika respondenter med ett uttalat tillgänglighetsansvar hos fallorganisationen. Det empiriska materialet har sedan jämförts och relaterats till tidigare forskning för att skapa ett trovärdigt resultat och för att möjliggöra generella slutsatser. Resultatet av studien visar att riktlinjer, användarinvolvering och tekniska hjälpmedel är vanliga komponenter i arbetet med tillgänglighet och att språk bör inkluderas som en del av tillgänglighet. Studien redogör även för att myndigheter kan ställas inför problem och utmaningar i tillgänglighetsarbetet i form av bristande attityd, bristande kompetens, bristande stöd från ledningen, otillräckliga verktyg, otillräckliga standardriktlinjer, komplicerad användarinvolvering, offentlig upphandling samt föråldrade system.

Web accessibility is a phenomenon that recently has drawn a lot of attention, particularly for governments, with enforcement of new laws and international standards. The term Web accessibility is about how people with disabilities are able to perceive, understand, navigate and interact with the web. The results of this study, however, show that language also can be a part of web accessibility. Even though the attention has increased, it has been shown that lots of websites suffer from poor accessibility. Some of these deficiencies can relate to how people work with web accessibility and the problems and challenges this work face, which is something this study has aimed to investigate. The study has been conducted in a qualitative interpretive spirit with a case study at Migrationsverket, which is one of 22 so called strategic governments in Sweden with a special responsibility towards disability politics. The data has been gathered through six interviews with five different people with responsibility towards web accessibility within the studied organisation. ▼ Identifying topics of a textual document is useful for many purposes. We can organize the documents by topics in digital libraries. Then, we could browse and search for the documents with specific topics. By examining the topics of a document, we can quickly understand what the document is about. To augment the traditional manual way of topic tagging tasks, which is labor-intensive, solutions using computers have been developed. This dissertation describes the design and development of a topic identification approach, in this case applied to disaster events. In a sense, this study represents the marriage of research analysis with an engineering effort in that it combines inspiration from Cognitive Informatics with a practical model from Information Retrieval. One of the design constraints, however, is that the Web was used as a universal knowledge source, which was essential in accessing the required information for inferring topics from texts. Retrieving specific information of interest from such a vast information source was achieved by querying a search engine's application programming interface. Specifically, the information gathered was processed mainly by incorporating the Vector Space Model from the Information Retrieval field. As a proof of concept, we subsequently developed and evaluated a prototype tool, Xpantrac, which is able to run in a batch mode to automatically process text documents. A user interface of Xpantrac also was constructed to support an interactive semi-automatic topic tagging application, which was subsequently assessed via a usability study. Throughout the design, development, and evaluation of these various study components, we detail how the hypotheses and research questions of this dissertation have been supported and answered. We also present that our overarching goal, which was the identification of topics in a human-comparable way without depending on a large training set or a corpus, has been achieved. Despite the increasing number of usability inspection methods for Web applications, most of these methods are being applied in later stages of the development process, which increases the cost of correcting the identified problems. This master degree thesis presents the Web Design Usability Evaluation (Web DUE) technique, a technique that was specifically crafted for the usability inspection of paper based prototypes (or mockups). The Web DUE technique aims at aiding inspectors in the identification of usability problems in earlier stages of the development process, thus reducing the cost of correcting them. To achieve this goal, the Web DUE technique suggests to divide mockups into Web page zones and, using a set of usability verification items, to check if the interface is usable or presents usability problems. To simulate interaction between the mockups and the user, and to support usability problems detection, we created the Mockup DUE tool. Both, the creation of the Web DUE technique and Mockup DUE tool, were supported by empirical validation. In this dissertation we present: (a) how we created the Web DUE technique based on the analysis of the results of a systematic mapping extension; (b) the feasibility study of the technique; (c) how the results from the empirical study helped in the creation of the Mockup DUE tool; (d) the feasibility study of the Mockup DUE tool; and (e) the evolution of the proposed technologies for the inspection of Web mockups.

Apesar do aumento do número de métodos de inspeção de usabilidade de aplicações Web, a maioria destes métodos só é aplicada nas últimas etapas do processo de desenvolvimento, aumentando o custo de correção dos problemas encontrados. Esta dissertação de mestrado apresenta a técnica Web Design Usability Evaluation (Web DUE), uma técnica específica para inspeções de usabilidade de protótipos em papel (ou mockups). A técnica Web DUE tem por finalidade apoiar os inspetores na identificação de problemas de usabilidade durante as primeiras etapas do processo de desenvolvimento, visando assim à redução dos custos de correção dos mesmos. Para atingir esse objetivo, a técnica Web DUE sugere a divisão dos mockups em zonas de páginas Web e a avaliação de usabilidade dos mesmos com base em um conjunto de itens de verificação. ▼ A pesquisa buscou avaliar o site da biblioteca do Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE) a partir da concepção do usuário e da usabilidade com o objetivo de refletir sobre seu papel e sua contribuição na construção do conhecimento científico e tecnológico. Diante do avanço das tecnologias da informação e comunicação (TICs), o cenário das bibliotecas é alterado principalmente em relação às formas de acesso às informações. Os sites de bibliotecas passam a funcionar como ferramentas de interação entre as fontes de pesquisa e os usuários. O objetivo principal dos usuários de sites de bibliotecas é acessar e recuperar informações no menor tempo possível, utilizando uma interface dinâmica, de aprendizagem e de uso fácil. Para isso, é necessário que os sites possuam recursos de usabilidade (um dos requisitos para avaliação da qualidade de um sistema ou site). A metodologia do trabalho envolveu o estudo de usuários (utilizado na Ciência da Informação) e o de usabilidade (usado na Ciência da Computação). Foram aplicadas três técnicas: 1) estudo de usuários por meio de questionários, com o objetivo de conhecer as necessidades de informação dos usuários do site Biblioteca On-line; 2) testes de usabilidade para verificar como ocorre a interação do usuário com o site e mensurar o grau de facilidade de uso; 3) análise de diretrizes de usabilidade. Os testes de usabilidade foram aplicados em laboratório utilizando o protocolo Think-aloud, ou pensar em voz alta. Os princípios avaliados com o estudo de usabilidade foram principalmente: facilidade de aprendizagem, baixa taxa de erros, eficiência, consistência e satisfação subjetiva. Aplicado a uma amostra de usuários buscou avaliar o comportamento deles diante do site, a fim de identificar problemas e sugerir melhorias. Os resultados levaram às seguintes constatações: grande parte da comunidade usuária que contribuiu com o questionário avaliou satisfatoriamente o site Biblioteca On-line; o site teve boa aceitação nos testes de usabilidade; a análise das diretrizes possibilitou a verificação de problemas de usabilidade na estrutura da homepage. Após a apresentação desses resultados é preciso trabalhar na implantação das melhorias propostas, o que deverá gerar um aumento na satisfação de uso do site Biblioteca On-line. Recomenda-se que a avaliação tenha continuidade antes e após a realização das alterações no site, sempre com a participação dos usuários. O site Biblioteca On-line precisa evoluir para fomentar novos conhecimentos no ambiente virtual, tornando-se uma ferramenta facilitadora na construção de novos conhecimentos científicos e tecnológicos. A pesquisa também pretendeu contribuir ao demonstrar uma metodologia de avaliação de sites, possível de ser aplicada em outras bibliotecas. Highly stressful situations have a prominent influence on the human psyche and it is crucial to take this into account when designing and evaluating software used predominantly in nerve wrecking situations. Lack of principles for design and evaluation of design of emergency handling software programs allows for graphic interface solutions that leave room for mistakes and slips in an environment where making an error can have catastrophic consequences. The study proposes a table of principles for evaluation and (re)design of user interface of programs used in highly stressful situations. The principles are grouped based on the human capability hindered by stress. Said principles were evaluated with the help of a case study on a tool for decision support (RASTEP) when facing a nuclear emergency. Statements on usability issues with RASTEP were collected through open group interviews and participant observation and pattern matched with proposed principles. Result of the pattern matching showed the disposition of usability issues per hindered capability following the same pattern as the one of the principles. Furthermore, all but one collected statement were identified as belonging to a group of hindered capabilities and were identified as violating at least one of the proposed principles. This points to the table of principles being able to serve as a tool in evaluating usability of graphic user interface of an existing emergency handling software and identifying its usability issues.

Mycket stressiga situationer kan ha en betydande påverkan på det mänskliga psyket, och det är avgörande att ta hänsyn till när man skapar och utvärderar mjukvara som främst används i pressade situationer. Brist på principer för utvärdering av design av nödhanteringsprogram möjliggör gränssnittslösningar som kan ge upphov till misstag i en miljö där felsteg kan ha katastrofala konsekvenser. Studien föreslår en tabell med principer för utvärdering och (re)design av användargränssnitt för program som används i mycket stressande situationer. Principerna är grupperade efter mänskliga förmågor som hindras av stress. Nämnda principer utvärderades genom en fallstudie av ett verktyg för beslutsstöd (RASTEP) vid kärnkraftsolycka. Vittnesmål om användbarhetsproblem med RASTEP insamlades genom öppna gruppintervjuer och deltagande observation (participant observation), och patternmatchades med de föreslagna principerna. Resultatet av patternmatchningen visade att fördelningen av användbarhetsproblem per hindrad förmåga följde samma mönster som fördelningen av principerna. Dessutom identifierades alla insamlade vittnesmål utom ett tillhöra en grupp av hindrade förmågor och identifierades bryta mot åtminstone en av de föreslagna principerna. Detta tyder på att tabellen med principerna kan användas som ett verktyg för att utvärdera användbarheten av gränssnitt hos ett befintligt nödhanteringsprogram och identifiera dess användbarhetsproblem.

▼ Today’s competitive global market has placed companies under great pressure and the focus on production systems has been more prominent. Although there are several claimed benefits with using frameworks in the development of production systems, companies are reluctant to use these. Consequently, a relevant question formulation is: Are frameworks in the development of production systems usable? The purpose with this thesis work was therefore to evaluate the usability of production system development frameworks (PSDFs) in practice. In order to achieve this purpose, two research questions were established: RQ1. How can usability of frameworks be evaluated? RQ2. How does the use of a framework contribute to the development of a new production system? In order to answer the posed research questions, Bellgran and Säfsten’s PSDF was used in the production system development (PSD) process of a new production system at Xylem. Based on the PSD process, a meta-study was performed to evaluate the practical usability of the PSDF. Usability was defined and evaluated based on the five usability terms learnability, memorability, efficiency, effectiveness, and satisfaction. The result showed that all the five usability terms contribute to the usability evaluation of PSDFs. However, memorability was considered difficult to use on only one study since the user has to think a step further and make a qualified guess to answer if it is possible to memorize a framework. Therefore, it was considered memorability is only appropriate to use in a multiple study. The results also showed that Bellgran and Säfsten’s PSDF contributed most in the beginning of the PSD process by putting emphasis on the planning phase and providing a structure to follow. Due to the nature of a framework (i.e., to serve as a guide for structures to follow), this was not unexpected. However, the contributions from a structure or plan are hard to exactly distinguish. Since companies most often want tangible and accurate evidences, frameworks’ vague contributions are considered to be a major reason to why companies do not use frameworks more frequently.

As electronic waste and unsustainable Information- and communication product consumption is a growing global problem, more effective tools are required for people and businesses to measure and improve their social and environmental impacts. The Agenda 2030 plan for sustainable development addresses this issue and calls for proper and safer treatment of material extraction, recycling and disposal. TCO Development have created an IT impact assessment tool which addresses this specific problem by giving procurers and purchasers the ability to browse and compare sustainable IT products. To be an effective tool, usability and user engagement attributes have to be considered, as well as the context of the user. The target audience of IT procurement officers are defined and a qualitative study is conducted to evaluate which changes to the design are important to implement to increase the usability and user engagement of the IT sustainability impact assessment tool. The evaluation of the tool shows general positive feedback towards the general layout, design and functionality. Only a few severe errors are discovered which are identified to be in the filtering process. Errors regarding the sensitivity of the slider tool, the excess of options when choosing a TCO certificate version, and confusing terminology while choosing a product type are a few problems which are discovered. A few corrective design alterations were presented based on these discoveries. Moving forward, the iterative design process should continue to address the remaining usability errors. Furthermore, developers and designers should prioritize improving the aspects of data accuracy, transparency as well as system integration to improve corresponding user engagement attributes.

Elektroniskt avfall och ohållbar konsumtion av informations- och kommunikationsprodukter är ett växande problem i världen. Fler och effektivare verktyg behövs för att människor och företag ska kunna mäta och förbättra sin sociala och miljömässiga påverkan. Agenda 2030-planen för hållbar utveckling berör denna fråga genom att efterlysa säkra och hållbara metoder för materialutvinning, återvinning och avfallshantering av produkter. TCO Development har skapat ett verktyg som bedömer IT-produkters klimatavtryck vilket tillåter inköpare och upphandlare att gå igenom och jämföra hållbara IT-produkter med varandra. För att fungera effektivt behöver verktygets attribut för användbarhet och användarengagemang tillgodoses. Vidare behöver kontexten för verktygets användning analyseras. Målgruppen för verktyget definierades och en kvalitativ studie genomfördes därefter för att identifiera vilka designförändringar som är viktiga att implementera för att öka användbarheten och engagemanget hos användarna. Resultatet av studien visar att det finns en generell positiv attityd gentemot den allmänna layouten, designen och funktionaliteten hos verktyget.
