▼ Since the start of excavations at Uruk (today: Warka/Southern Iraq) in the beginning of the 20th century, the label “Uruk peroid” was not only used for archaeological levels belonging to the 4th millennium (ca. 3700-3100 B.C.), but the ancient city of Uruk itself was seen as the place of origin for this very civilization, from where it must have spread into other areas around. A correlation of the respective Uruk levels (XII-IV) with stratified levels of other archaeological sites — first of all with the results of the post-war excavations at Nippur (today: Nuffar/Southern Iraq) — led to the division of the whole Uruk period into three successive stages: the so-called Early (XII- IX), Middle (VIII-VI), and Late Uruk (V-IV) phases. The archaeological site of Tell Sheilh Hassan (TSH) in Nothern Syria was excavated during the years 1984 to 1997. Here the Middle Uruk period was represented by at least eight building levels, which contained a rich inventory of small finds; to these belonged a lot of pottery and stone vessels with applications of four nose- like lugs, arraged opposite to another on the shoulder: the so-called four- lugged jars. Because the site lay within the area of salvage excavation on the border of the Euphrates, and therefore a partition of finds between Syria and Germany was granted, nearly half of the small finds and pottery could be brought to the Berlin Museum of Near Eastern Archaeology; this was an ideal situation for studies on the original material, and very helpful for an intensive analyses of all kinds of small finds. The thesis presented here contains not only the whole corpus of four-lugged jars found in TSH, with a descriptive catalogue and ink drawings of all items, but also a detailed analysis of the chrono-stratigraphical position of the single vessels inside the sequence of the various levels belonging to the Uruk period. The observation of some different typological features led to the division of the whole corpus into five groups, and their different time of existence within the respective levels of the Middle Uruk phase could be clearly demonstrated. With the help of these observations, four-lugged jars from other sites in Syria, Turkey, Iraq, and Iran were connected typologically with the respective items from TSH. The results of there correlations not only repressent an important contribution to our knowledge of the Uruk culture, but also they help to verify an interesting theory, which was formulated already earlier, namely that the origins of this first great civilization did not lay in Uruk itself, but most probably in the southwestern Iran, specially in the area around the city of Susa, the so-called Susiana. ▼ Durant le IVe millénaire, la Mésopotamie et ses voisins ont été reliés via un vaste réseau commercial, établi par des Urukéens lors de leur expansion en Iran et dans le Nord mésopotamien. À la fin du IVe et au début du IIIe, la Mésopotamie et ses voisins ont connu une phase de crise dont les causes nous sont toujours obscures en raison de l’absence des documents écrits remontant à cette phase. A cette phase, le réseau commercial urukéen et la colonisation urukéenne en Iran et en Mésopotamie du Nord, s’étant effondrés, les sites urukéens ont été abandonnés, ainsi qu’un grand nombre de sites indigènes qui ont été abandonnés. Le contact entre le Nord et le Sud mésopotamien fut suspendu. Pourtant, d’autres sites furent fondés que ce soit en Iran ou en Mésopotamie. Bien que la culture céramique mésopotamienne ne se soit modifiée profondément à cette phase cruciale, des traditions peintres réapparaissent soudainement alors que les Mésopotamiens les avaient abandonnées depuis 9 siècles (au Post-Obeid). Trois aires à céramique peinte apparaissent en Mésopotamie : en Irak du centre, de l’Est, du Nord (horizon de Ninive 5) et l’Iran a employé massivement la peinture. Cependant, le Sumer a conservé les traditions urukéennes qui ne connaissent pas de peinture. A noter que la peinture en Iran a été employée avant et durant l’expansion urukéenne. De plus, il semble avoir existé un corridor de contact reliant le West iranien aux trois zones à peinture en Mésopotamie. Mais comment peut-on expliquer ce phénomène de la réapparition de la peinture en Mésopotamie centrale et du Nord : s’agit-il des déplacements des groupes iraniens en Mésopotamie, ou des simples influences ? On ne peut pas traiter de la question de la fin du IVe/début du IIIe millénaire sans confronter, d’une part au problème concernant le destin des Urukéens. Ces derniers ont vécu plus de 4 siècles dans la périphérie durant l’expansion. Et d’autre part on est confronté au problème de la fondation des sites urbain aux touts début du 3e millénaire (Mari, Terqa, Kharab Sayyar et Chuera).Pour répondre à ces questions, nous avons choisi des sites-clés en Iran et en Mésopotamie. Leur céramique (et d’autre matériel) est étudié tout d’abord dans leur position stratigraphique, site par site, puis selon leur répartition dans l’espace. Au même temps, cette étude strato-céramique a été combinée avec une étude portée sur les changements dans l’occupation dans l’espace (abandon et fondation) et sur les transformations culturelles, surtout en Iran du Nord-Ouest et de l’Ouest où le phénomène de l’expansion transcaucasienne s’étend jusqu’au Kermanshah et le Nord du Luristan dans le Zagros central).Basant sur des comparaisons céramiques et sur d’autres aspects archéologiques, nous avons tenté de corréler entre la stratigraphie des sites étudiés. Le terme ‘’proto-urbain’’ proposé par Pascal Butterlin, se réfère à une période s’étendant depuis la fin du 5ème millénaire et jusqu’au 3ème millénaire av. n. è. Durant cette longue période, le site de Mashnaqa sur la moyenne vallée du Khabur, en Syrie, a connu une occupation humaine ininterrompue. Les fouilles de sauvetage dirigées par Dominique Beyer, entre 1992 et 2000 à Mashnaqa, ont livré une longue séquence de l’architecture. L’objectif de cette recherche est de publier les données archéologiques de Mashnaqa durant la période proto-urbaine. Le site a présenté sur cette longue durée quatre niveaux relatifs aux périodes suivantes : Post-Obeid, Uruk Ancien,Uruk Moyen, et Uruk Récent. Ces niveaux sont caractérisés par plusieurs phases architecturales, dont la plupart ont livré des habitats soit complets soit dans un état lacunaire. Le village d’UrukAncien et d’Uruk Moyen a présenté un grand nombre de fours circulaires à cuisine, accompagnés souvent des constructions quadrilatères ou entourés d’un réseau de murs. Ces aménagements posent une question sur le rôle du site à cette époque. La diversité architecturale se présente également par une maison au plan tripartite datant de la période Post-Obeid, et par une construction subcirculaire dont, le modèle, avec les aménagements qui lui sont liés, présente un prototype dans la fin du 4ème millénaire av. n. è. L’évolution de l’espace bâti et le développement céramique sont sans doute les points essentiels dans l’interprétation de la place de Mashnaqa dans la région du Khabur.

The term proto-urban, proposed by Pascal Butterlin, refers to the period extending from the end of the 5th to the 3rd millennium BC. During this long period, the site of Mashnaqa, which is located on the middle valley of Khabur in Syria, was characterized by a continuous occupation. The salvage excavations in Mashnaqa, directed by Dominique Beyer between 1992 and 2000, yielded a long sequence of architecture. The aim of this research is to publish the Mashnaqa archaeological data during the proto-urban period. Four levels which are relative to post-Ubaid, Early Uruk, Middle and Late Uruk were characterized by several architectural phases. Most of these phases yielded some households, either well conserved, or in a deficient state. The village of Late Uruk as well as Middle Uruk is particularly characterized by a remarkable density of circular cooking ovens. These installations were often accompanied to quadrangles structures or they were surrounded by a network of three or four walls. This density of ovens makes us wonder about the real role of the site at this time. The architectural diversity is also presented by the tripartite house, which is dated to the post Ubaid. Moreover, in the late 4th millennium BC, a subcircular building dominated the tell. Die vorliegende Arbeit bietet eine philologische Edition und inhaltliche Diskussion von Texten aus der Zeit Nabopolassars bis Darius I., die im Zuge der ersten archäologischen Beschäftigung mit der südbabylonischen Stadt Uruk in den Besitz des Britischen Museums gelangten. W. K. Loftus führte im Februar 1850 eine erste, einmonatige Grabungskampagne in Uruk durch, während derer er unter anderen, weitaus wichtiger erachteten Funden ca. 40 Tontafeln entdeckte. Diesen ist seither – auch aufgrund ihres schlechten Erhaltungszustandes – wenig Beachtung geschenkt worden, sodass sie gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts lediglich Eingang in Kopienbände und gelegentliche Erwähnungen unter einzelnen Gesichtspunkten verschiedenster Studien zur neu- und spätbabylonischen Zeit fanden. Darum soll die Tafelsammlung, innerhalb welcher sich Verbände von Wirtschaftsdokumenten zweier Familien, der Atû- und Sîn-tabni-Familie, ausmachen ließen, nun vornehmlich anhand der meist abstrakt formulierten Verpflichtungsscheine wissenschaftlich aufgearbeitet werden. Ihre archivalischen und ökonomischen Charakteristika werden dargelegt und einerseits im inhaltlich nicht von Vornherein gegebenen Zusammenhang zueinander, andererseits im Kontext der wirtschaftlichen und gesellschaftlichen Umwelt Uruks untersucht. Während die Atû-Familie sich unter Kollegen im weitesten Sinne aus dem Eanna-Tempel bewegte, führte die Sîn-tabni-Familie auch Geschäfte mit Persönlichkeiten anderer Bereiche der urukäischen Gesellschaft.

The present thesis gives a philological edition and discussion of otherwise neglected cuneiform tablets from the times of Nabopolossar to Darius I. Since W.K. Loftus’ early excavation at Uruk in 1850, these private economic documents have been kept in the British Museum. They have been copied in the late 19th century and since only occasionally remarked upon. In our study these documents of the two families of Atû and Sîn-tabni are treated comprehensively, taking into account their archival composition, and economic and social setting. The presented collection of texts comprise typical business documents, mainly the ubiquitous promissory notes. The Atû family is primarily engaged in prebendary work in the main temple of Eanna. The Sîn-tabni family operates in a slightly wider societal array.
