▼ Melbourne's colonial core has been influenced by diverse political, economic and social relations intersecting with planning and urban design concepts: gold rush, periodic bursts of speculation, World Wars, and waves of immigration. These relations reflect the city's process of urban transformation and are typified by cycles of boom and bust. This research examines the characteristics of the major morphological periods associated with specific planning ideologies and contemporary influences of politics, economy and culture. In addition to assessing the morphological history of the city's core by reproducing a series of maps, the city's morphological history is analysed, particularly in terms of its spatial and block form, from a colonial to a modern context.
This study therefore outlines the morphological evolution of an urban organism: the physical transformation of central Melbourne from 1835 until 2011. It gives special attention to the characteristics of the physical changes that have occurred; the socio- economic factors responsible; and the precise treatment of data sources which record those transformations. The compilation of data from state and institutional libraries, planning authorities and regulating agencies related to fire protection and water supply is described. The various types of physical changes undergone by the city centre, including functional alterations, plot division (or amalgamation), rebuilding and additions to existing structures, are analysed. The variations over time in the locations of these changes are examined in relation to the characteristics of contemporary social factors. Morphological mapping has been widely used in this research. The transformation of central Melbourne has been precisely documented and measured in its history through nine sets of figure-ground maps from 1837-2005, transcribed from historical block plans and maps.
A thorough anatomical analysis depicts a vivid panorama at every stage of growth of central Melbourne. What is revealed is a city transformed from a singular civic vision to a layered and collaged image, and at the same time, the imprint of the original colonial street grid remains. This transformation signifies the morphological evolution of central Melbourne. This comprehensive morphological study is the first of its kind in relation to the historical transformation of an Australian capital city.

▼ Sustainable development is one of the greatest challenges to
urban planning in
the 21st century. Current patterns of
urban development, called byspecially sprawl, and
human activity have led to environmental degradation and created a serious threat to
continued human existence and sustainability of life on earth. The United States,
concerns over consequences of
urban sprawl have led to increased advocacy for more
compact and traditional
urban development. The compact city is now widely accepted as
the most effective solution to sustainable
urban form.
The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between sustainability
and
urban form. In order to achieve the aims of this study, 50 cities in the United States
are analyzed and compared with the 2008 sustainable city rankings from the
organization SustainLane, using four categories of
urban form indicators: densities,
mode of commute to work, mean travel time to work & traffic congestion cost, and
planning & land use. This research is based on the hypothesis that a sustainable city has
a compact city
form. According to the SustainLane 2008 US sustainable city ranking high ranked cities were considered more sustainable cities and low ranked cities were
regarded as less sustainable cities. Using SPSS’s correlation analysis tool, I studied the
relationship between overall city ranking and four categories of
urban form the
indicators. The overall finding of the analysis of the relationship between each indicator
and
urban form yields mixed results.
The result of this research found that that sustainable city and
urban form has
several correlations; densities, mode of commute to work, and planning and land use
have a strong positive correlation with sustainable city; however, mean travel time to
work and traffic congestion cost have a negative correlation with SustainLane’s
sustainable city ranking. These results mean that sustainable cities which were high
ranked cities in the SustainLane 2008 US sustainable city ranking have a high density,
sustainable mode of commute to work, and strong planning and land use. Particularly,
when a mixed land use, centeredness, and street connectivity were combined, the
planning and land use category of indicators shows stronger correlation with
sustainability. According to this result, these findings suggest that when the planning and
land use indicators are combined synergistically compact
urban form can be an indicator
of a more sustainable city.

▼ The objectives of this research are to examine the relationship between
urban form and excess commuting for 10 different occupation types in 12 different Census Metropolitan Areas (CMA) across Ontario, Canada and to provide insights that could help inform the planning process.
The results suggest the following: 1) that two cities with the same type of
urban form may not necessarily exhibit the same level of commuting efficiency; 2) the size of the CMA and the amount of spatial interaction activities are key factors with respect to commuting efficiency; 3) certain occupations were found to have higher excess commuting than the CMA-wide measure; therefore, planners could channel land use development to attract those occupational classes; 4) some patterns of
urban form could benefit from a reliable transit system, in which case planners could focus on building transit systems that connect these workers to their places of work; and 5) planners could also utilize the Brotchie's
urban triangles to evaluate if the current
urban form is associated with an efficient commuting pattern and identify what types of
urban form could give rise to more commuting efficiency. Future research may expand on this thesis by comparing
urban land development and commuting efficiency changes for a particular city over time. Other opportunities may include performing similar analysis with a larger sample of CMAs across Canada, or comparing the three largest CMAs in Canada (i.e. Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver). Future research may also consider allowing workers who live in the CMA to commute to jobs outside the CMA, or live outside the CMA and commute inwards.

▼ The possibility of urban decline in metropolitan post-war inner suburbs is currently being examined in the planning literature, particularly in the United States. Inner suburbs are built between 1946 and 1971 and are therefore older and structurally different from the later suburbs. At the same time, they lack the amenities of the core and the inner cities.
This thesis aims to examine whether inner suburban decline is occurring in Canada. 15 largest Census Metropolitan Areas (CMAs) are selected for the purpose of this study. All CMAs are then separated into five urban zones: the core, the inner suburbs, the outer suburbs, and the fringe/exurbs. All zones are then assessed for decline based on relative changes in median household income, average dwelling values, and average gross rent in the period between 1986 and 2006. Subsequently, nine of the largest CMAs are also assessed for declines in the prosperity factor and the exclusivity factor. These variables are extracted via a factor analysis which includes variables measuring demographic, socio-economic, and housing characteristics.
Results indicate that inner suburbs declined in median household income, the average value of dwelling, and the prosperity factor measures. In contrast, average gross rent and the exclusivity factor showed less clear results. Overall, the results obtained in this study suggest that Canada’s inner suburbs are experiencing decline.
The possible causes of inner suburban decline remain poorly understood. A number of possible explanations are offered, ranging from the lack of urban appeal of the inner suburbs, the decline of the industrial employment sector, to aging housing stock, the movement of displaced low-income immigrants, and the aging of seniors with limited income. More research is necessary in order to establish plausible mechanisms beyond preliminary speculation.
A number of policy approaches to inner suburban decline are outlined. Emphasis is placed on the revitalization of housing, greater cooperation between metropolitan regions and implementation of smart growth strategies. Further research avenues include the confirmation of the phenomenon in Canada, as well as policy case studies examining the success of planning approaches in arresting inner suburban decline.

▼ During the last decade, Brazil has witnessed the construction of an unprecedented number of social housing developments, due to an ambitious federal program named “My House My Life” (Minha Casa Minha Vida - MCMV). In seven years, it has contracted 4.2 million of housing units, and 2.6 million of them were already delivered to beneficiaries. The program is currently in its third phase, and it covers three different ranges of income with two main goals: to boost the construction sector and reduce the housing deficit of the country by encouraging homeownership. However, the resultant large scale developments are providing residents with housing units of reduced square footage, located in peripheral locations, with few or no access to basic services and commercial activity. In such conditions, these developments become “dormitory neighborhoods”, since they lack enough infrastructure to meet the population’s daily needs, such as education, health care, commercial activity, job opportunities, social interactions, etc. Standardization of architectural and
urban solutions are a way of reducing costs and usually results in the decrease of the development’s overall quality. This thesis first discusses the Brazilian current housing provision situation and the interconnected relation between social and spatial structures of cities. Searching for a more sustainable
urban form, it builds a conceptual framework that expands the eight components for sustainable communities presented by the Egan Wheel by incorporating design strategies to reach them. It was performed an assessment, based on the conceptual framework, of one of the largest MCMV’s development, located in the city of Londrina, second biggest city of the State of Paraná, South of Brazil. This study focuses on the
urban form of the development, pointing out that any people’s habitat should be consisted of more than a shelter, it should be complemented by a healthy neighborhood that promotes human interaction, and encourages prosperity. Then, it was proposed an alternative master plan to the case study, which has maintained ninety percent of the total current residents and offered quality public and green spaces with a more rational
urban form, which also takes into consideration the social processes that define a community.

▼ Urban design theorists have developed a body of knowledge about the characteristics of places that support public life. More recently, researchers have developed quantitative methods for measuring certain aspects of
urban form. However, little work has been done to apply quantitative methods to
urban design theory. This thesis proposes a new metrics for representing
urban form attributes of
urban areas that support public life. These are organized as the Lively
Urban Form (LUF) framework. The attributes measured were identified based on a review of influential
urban design theorists dealing with
urban form. The analytic framework was applied to eight study sites in Copenhagen and Seattle in order to test its ability to express
urban form differences among these sites which affect their support for public life. Discussion of results, limitations, and potential applications of the method follow.

▼ As residential
urban development increases in the western United States, few studies have shown how different
urban forms influence vegetation cover. The two studies in this thesis examine how to define and measure
urban form in order to understand the relationship between
urban form characteristics and vegetation cover.
In the first study,
urban form was defined by using past methods of identifying and measuring
urban sprawl. Past studies showed the most essential metrics that define residential
urban form are building density, centrality, connectivity, land use mix, and parcel size. This study reviews these metrics and proposes revised unified definitions and measurement methods. It is recommended that consistent definitions and methods be used in further research of
urban form.
Cache County, Utah was used as a study area to apply these methods as a representative community of the western U.S. Residential parcels were measured for each metric. A K-means cluster analysis assign each parcel to one of 50 groups based on metric measurement similarities. The 10 most widely used groups contained 87% of the residential parcels in Cache County. These groups represented
urban forms with distinct identifiable characteristics such as Agricultural residential,
urban sprawl, historic plat patterns, and evolved versions each.
The second study used the metrics and groups from the first study to check for correlations with vegetation cover. A normalized difference vegetation index ( NDVI) of aerial imagery of Cache County was used to classify land cover into three groups: dense vegetation, light vegetation, and no vegetation. Measurements of vegetation cover were extracted for each parcel and each
urban form group. Total vegetation cover ( TVC) and dense vegetation cover (DVC) measured higher in
urban areas than in the county as a whole. Agricultural residential groups had among the highest TVC, but had the lowest DVC. Non-agricultural residential groups had the highest DVC as a percentage of TVC with the exception of group 4 “Modern Suburban Sprawl” which had the lowest DVC as a percentage of TVC. Group 7 “Satellite Centers” had the highest TVC while group 3 “Dead End Semi-sprawl” had the lowest TVC. Both groups 3 and 7 had the highest DVC as a percentage of TVC.
A correlation analysis revealed that TVC had stronger correlations than DVC with
urban form metrics. Building density had the strongest correlation with TVC (r = -0.62, p= 0). Correlations with TVC were also found with Parcel size (r = -0.23, p= <.001) and centrality (r = -0.21, p = <.001). Very weak relationships with TVC w ere found with connectivity and land use mix.

▼ The research on urban form and its related socio-economic activities have been undertaken for long, while the evolution of research approaches and tools are limited by the conventional medium such as maps to interpret the built environment. Emerging new urban data has equipped urban morphologists with innovative datasets for urban form studies. This thesis aims to explore and interpret the urban form from a new perspective, which integrates spatial patterns generated from Space Syntax analysis with new urban data in GIS using Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA). Xi’an, as one of the most renowned historic cities in China, is selected as the case since the city has undergone an unprecedented transformation of urban form in the last decades. In this research, the space syntax model of Xi’an is built primarily based on the OpenStreetMap (OSM) with further refinement by the Baidu Map. The Point of Interests (POI) data acquired from the Baidu Map API serves as the main datasets for the criterion of MCDA. The social data of human movement flow is gathered by the gate observation in five representative districts in Xi’an. The correlation analysis with observation data is employed to compare the result of the original Space Syntax analysis and MCDA to consolidate the understanding of urban form. This research provides urban researchers with new insights into urban form in terms of the application of new urban data, the invention of a new research method, and the new perception of the City of Xi’an. The findings suggest that the new perspective can facilitate the quantifying process and enhance the comprehensive understanding of urban form. Based on the research, recommendations for further studies and urban planning of Xi’an are discussed.

▼ Inspired by Afrocentrism ideologists such as Molefi Kete Asante (2007), the researcher
advocates for non-dominance of one community by any other, as this has created
problems across sub-Saharan Africa.
The social phenomenon of internal colonialism thrives on cultural authoritarianism that
the ruling elites or dominant social groups accentuate through the built environment.
This study explored collectively accepted makings of Afrocentric sources that would
inspire Afrocentric placemaking and architecture in contemporary
urban built
form and
promote social equality, justice and a sense of belonging. The study of these
Afrocentric sources would motivate architects to design contemporary local built
environments that respond to African value systems.
The study focused on the Mthwakazi Nation’s historic capital, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.
A mixed method approach was adopted, with a qualitative method applied generally
and a quantitative one locally.
Special consideration was given to concerns such as African cosmological orientation,
culture and identity that pivoted indigenous legal, political, governance and economic
institutions. This enabled a narration of precolonial built forms. Various concepts and
theories such as placemaking, social identity, symbolic interaction theory,
Afrocentricity and existential theory were drawn on to explore the possibility of
contemporary architectural design and urbanism that captures the African worldview.
Given their ability to exhibit identity phenomena, the focus was civic spaces and
buildings. International precedents such as the Sydney Opera House and its linkage
to the Bennelong House in Australia, which demonstrate the extent to which Australia
has taken on the mantle of European culture and the significance of historical events
as a source of inspiration in
urban placemaking. Symbolic interactionism evokes
indigenous ecological features to encourage creation of locally responsive built

environments. The Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature is presented in this study as a
typical example.
Built forms and parallel historical developments were examined from the precolonial,
to the colonial and postcolonial periods to identify appropriate Afrocentric sources for
contemporary placemaking. In Zimbabwe, Shona traditional built forms were anchored
by Great Zimbabwe while King Lobengula’s historical settlement of koBulawayo
reflects amaNdebele architectural developments that date back to KwaZulu. Both
kinds of traditional settlements provide indicators to Afrocentric sources for envisaged
strategies in placemaking and architecture in African cities.
To the African mind circularity and movement capture what the cosmos represents.
Movement is rhythmic, regular and seasonal. With respect to symbolic interactionism,
circularity and movement is how the cosmos reflects itself to an African mind; hence
the criticality of organic and rhythmic motion in his/her art and architecture. The study
contends that the Collective Centred Afrocentric Placemaking…

▼ The project is a city-level analysis on urban forms of Arnhem. It explores perspectives to capture and represent the spatial characteristics and eventually, character of the city. The approaches include city as landscape, city as planned artefact, city as categorised chaos and city as spatio-temporal entity comprised of humans and built forms. The conclusion is a synthesised portrait of the spatial history of Arnhem, expressed through metaphor, analogy and myth. The central quest of the project is how to know something of such complexity and ambiguous definition as a city. To plan a future, the planner/designer must go through this quest, because the future is on a trajectory traced from the past and present, and constrained by the city’s own character.

Urban Form and Passive Design for High Performance Buildings in the Christchurch Rebuild.

▼ “One of the most basic and fundamental questions in
urban master planning and building regulations is ‘how to secure common access to sun, light and fresh air?” (Stromann-Andersen & Sattrup, 2011).
Daylighting and natural ventilation can have significant benefits in office buildings. Both of these ‘passive’ strategies have been found to reduce artificial lighting and air-conditioning energy consumption by as much as 80% (Ministry for the Environment, 2008); (Brager, et al., 2007). Access to daylight and fresh air can also be credited with improved occupant comfort and health, which can lead to a reduction of employee absenteeism and an increase of productivity (Sustainability Victoria, 2008).
In the rebuild of Christchurch central city, following the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, Cantabrians have expressed a desire for a low-rise, sustainable city, with open spaces and high performance buildings (Christchurch City Council, 2011). With over 80% of the central city being demolished, a unique opportunity to readdress
urban form and create a city that provides all buildings with access to daylight and fresh air exists.
But a major barrier to wide-spread adoption of passive buildings in New Zealand is their dependence on void space to deliver daylight and fresh air – void space which could otherwise be valuable built floor space. Currently,
urban planning regulations in Christchurch prioritize density, allowing and even encouraging low performance compact buildings.
Considering this issue of density, this thesis aimed to determine which
urban form and building design changes would have the greatest effect on building performance in Central City Christchurch.
The research proposed and parametrically tested modifications of the current compact
urban form model, as well as passive building design elements. Proposed changes were assessed in three areas: energy consumption, indoor comfort and density. Three computer programs were used: EnergyPlus was the primary tool, simulating energy consumption and thermal comfort. Radiance/Daysim was used to provide robust daylighting calculations and analysis. UrbaWind enabled detailed consideration of the
urban wind environment for reliable natural ventilation predictions.
Results found that, through a porous
urban form and utilization of daylight and fresh air via simple windows, energy consumption could be reduced as much as 50% in buildings. With automatic modulation of windows and lighting, thermal and visual comfort could be maintained naturally for the majority of the occupied year. Separation of buildings by as little as 2m enabled significant energy improvements while having only minimal impact on individual property and city densities.
Findings indicated that with minor alterations to current
urban planning laws, all buildings could have common access to daylight and fresh air, enabling them to operate naturally, increasing energy efficiency and resilience.

▼ This research is a study of gridded street patterns in history, critically examining the ways in which the grid has been utilised throughout history, its advantages and limitations, and what features of this street pattern – its rectangular and/or square blocks, and straight, orderly, parallel and perpendicular intersecting trajectories which are mostly wide or coupled with narrower streets – aid in its capacity to adapt, and flexibility to accommodate changing circumstances and needs. More specifically, this thesis explores the retrofitting of and alteration to essential (transport) infrastructure, and associated services and networks in varying street patterns, given how critical this, and the movement of people and goods, is to the functionality of cities. Delivery of infrastructure takes place in both formally planned grid and non-grid (e.g. radial) arrangements, and organically developed settlements. This thesis specifically addresses the contribution made by the grid – an essential design element used in the planning of urban spaces – and whether the features of this rectangular geometric form are able to better facilitate the construction and/or retrofitting of and alterations to essential elevated, surface and underground hard infrastructure, and associated services and networks, particularly those of transport, in a more effective and extensive, and less disruptive manner.
Theoretical and practical examples of how well various street layouts adapt to accommodate change, particularly in regard to the application and patterns of essential infrastructure, and associated services and networks in question, are examined. This is predominately tested from the era of industrialisation (beginning with the Industrial Revolution in the late eighteenth century) onwards, as it is from then that urbanisation and unprecedented city population growth was occurring. Associated with this was the need for improved health, sanitation, and movement of people and goods, and the solutions to this including the development of infrastructure, and related services and networks, such as that of transport, still remain integral to societies. Case studies selected, the nineteenth century British (who were particularly active in utilising grid planning tools in delivering settlements) colonial settlements – now central cities – of Melbourne, Australia; Hong Kong (i.e. the approximate extent of what was the City of Victoria on the north face of Hong Kong Island); and Dunedin, New Zealand; support the wider analysis of street patterns, providing an array of simpler and more complex grids for examination.
The main research question asked is: In what way has the grid been used throughout history, what are the reasons for its use, what are the features of this street pattern that contribute to its benefits, and how does this compare to other layouts of urban form?

▼ This thesis presents evidence that income polarization is accompanied by increasing social-spatial disparities between areas of the city that were developed in different societal contexts, with different planning approaches, and that have different land use and transportation dynamics. An analysis of the social structure of the Toronto Metropolitan Area finds indications of widespread gentrification in the inner city, socioeconomic decline in the postwar
suburbs, and sustained household affluence in the ever expanding outermost suburbs of the metropolitan area. It is argued that, as a political and social endeavor that is embedded in broader development regimes, urban planning influences social-spatial polarization to the extent that it influences urban form.

▼ This thesis is about the spatial development of Mumbai with special attention to the development of railinfrastructure in the city. One of the case studies is the VAG-metro corridor, the first metroline of the ambitious Mumbai Metro Project. Scientists like Graham & Marvin write about splintering urbanism and the role of selective infrastructure networks and privatisation in this proces of a changing spatial

▼ The
urban heat island effect is considered one of the main causes of global warming and is contributing to increasing temperatures in the
urban United States. This phenomenon enhances the intensity of summer heat waves and the risk to public health due to increased exposure to extreme thermal conditions.
Characteristics of spatial development patterns can significantly affect
urban temperature because they are related to the arrangement of development and land surface materials, which are crucial elements needed to determine land surface temperature. While previous studies revealed that the effect of the
urban heat island varies depending on different land use types and surface characteristics, few have considered the overall development patterns of
urban form. I address this under-studied aspect of heat hazards by analyzing the relationship between spatial development pattern and
urban heat island effect across a sample of 353 metropolitan regions of the U.S. Specifically, I employ a series of landscape metrics to measure
urban development patterns using a national land cover dataset from the U.S. Geological Survey. Linear regression models are used to statistically isolate the effect of different spatial development patterns on increasing the
urban heat island effect while controlling for multiple contextual variables including built-environment, environmental, and demographic characteristics.
The result of this study showed that the daytime mean surface
urban heat island effect (4.04˚F) is higher than that of nighttime (2.41˚F). Ecological context (i.e. Ecoregions) has proved to be a statistically significant modulator that helps to explain the spatial distribution of the
urban heat island effect.
Regarding the main research question of this study, the results indicate that specific categories of
urban development pattern including density, continuity, and clustering are statistically associated with increasing the
urban heat island effect. This initial evidence suggests that the overall development patterns are an important issue to consider when mitigating the adverse impacts related to the
urban heat island effect. In addition, when contextual heat contributors are held constant, the intensity of the
urban heat island effect can differ depending on the configuration of development in
urban areas.
This study can be used as a starting point for a comprehensive approach to both spatial land development and hazard-resistant planning by providing alternative ways of measuring and modeling spatial development patterns.

▼ Since 1990s the metropolitan spatial structure has been alleged to be growing smarter. Excessive suburbanization trends characterizing
urban form since the Second World War are now believed to be reversing in favor of
urban environment. The reversal is driven by changing household preferences as well as a series of changes that
urban areas have gone through which make them more attractive living environments for some demographic groups.
This is a dissertation consisting of three related essays which examine change in the metropolitan spatial structure over the past two decades to determine if suggested changes are in fact observable in
urban form. In measuring change, I consider a number of measures that characterize
urban form, particularly density, concentration, clustering, infill and growth allocation of
urban growth. Given the prevalence of foreclosure crisis in the later part of the first millennium decade, I also explore the impact of
urban form on accumulation of foreclosures as an indicator of future spatial structure change.
The study finds two different trends at force facing the American metropolitan spatial structure. For the metropolitan areas with weak growth pressures or those loosing population since 1990, suburbanization trends continue to define spatial structure. However, in the metropolitan areas that are facing moderate and strong population growth pressures and constituting the majority of the largest
urban areas in the U.S., the importance of
urban center is ever more significant and their spatial structure is greatly dependent on denser
urban form. Desirability for
urban environment also manifested itself in the spatial distribution of foreclosures in Maryland.

▼ This research examines the role of the physical environment in the creation of place on the urban street in two locations in Nashville, Tennessee. Place theory and the qualities of a good urban street were studied in an effort to identify
physical components necessary to create place on the street. Then, two areas in Nashville that have sought to create place through the use of a form based code, the Urban Design Overlay, were examined via an on-street questionnaire designed to collect
user input on the physical environment as well as gauge the user’s sense of place on the street. This study seeks to evaluate the Urban Design Overlay as a tool for placemaking and the questionnaire as an evaluative tool in that effort.

▼ Configurational Morphology is a research and design project exploring the potentials of configurational design as a systematic approach to generating site-specific urban form responsive to its environmental, social end economic context. By looking into both the theoretical potentials of configurational thinking as well as its practical application in the form of design experiments, the project manages to paint a comprehensive picture of how a configurational design process could be structured and what benefits it could bring. From its historical precedents and roots in vernacular architecture, through its analytical capacity to abstract and visualise the socio-spatial patterns of existing cities, its applicability as a digital design interface mediating between humans and machines, its compatibility with advanced computational techniques to finally its ability to generate bottom-up adaptive urban form, the experiments reinforce the idea that such a design approach could indeed be possible as well as feasible. Throughout, an underlying theme guides the project; a vision of the future city in which generic cookie-cutter urban fabric is replaced by customised adaptive urban forms of tremendous diversity. With it returns local identity, the richness of spatial experiences, increased performance and sustainability, higher density, increased equality and much more. Simultaneously, traditional socio-spatial structures are deconstructed and can be translated to other previously unimaginable forms such as a high-rise row house or a slab functioning as a courtyard block offering completely new possibilities for urban living. The result is a city of infinite opportunities; a city in which our social patterns, buildings, the environment and the urban fabric again become an indistinguishable whole adapted to contemporary urban life and fit for the future of our society.

afectando o clima global.
A validação

▼ This dissertation empirically evaluates the association between urban form and the energy performance of neighborhoods focusing on their energy demand and on-site green energy supply. Urban form, the spatial pattern and density of urban physical objects, such as: buildings, streets, vegetation and open space, have a considerable long-term influence on macro-scale environments. Besides their well-known impacts on vehicle trips, the effects of urban form on space-conditioning energy use and on-site energy generation has recently received attention most likely as a result of the energy crisis of the late 2000s.However, these complex effects of urban form on their net energy savings, generation and potential trade-offs have not been rigorously and comprehensively evaluated due to computational limitations and the lack of data rich environments. In addition, we do not understand what kind of urban form is best for utilizing the benefits from new technologies (for example, efficient vehicles and solar photovoltaics) as they are rapidly being adopted in urban landscapes. Given the inertia of the built environment, it is imperative to alter urban form based on a thorough understanding and comprehensive assessment of urban systems. As our scholarship and practice of green initiatives has been somewhat piecemeal and short-sighted, it is critical that we construct comprehensive models to study the relationships between urban form and energy efficiency.Given this challenge, this dissertation assesses the impact of urban form on energy use and on-site green energy generation by developing and applying an empirically based data rich model. This research also provides an approach for evaluating potential trade-offs between energy demand and supply given specific urban form. Given these goals, this dissertation focuses on answering three questions that each represent energy demand, supply and trade-offs that are affected by urban form:(1) does urban form have impact on residential space-conditioning energy use?; (2) does urban form have influence on on-site solar energy potential?; and (3) how does the trade-off between vehicle energy use and on-site solar energy potential vary over urban density? To best account for a complex real-world environment in the model, this dissertation employs advanced three-dimensional urban models derived from Geographic Information Systems (GIS)and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data. This method successfully captures the physical conditions of real landscapes, including vegetation, which has been impossible to obtain until recent years. After extracting urban form and demographic variables through spatial analyses, it applies multivariate analysis to assess the impact of urban form on energy use and on-site energy generation controlling for other factors. The Cities of Sacramento and San Francisco, California are used in this research, however it is argued the approach is universal in nature. This dissertation reveals that urban form matters in reducing cooling energy demand and increasing on-site…

▼ In India, demand for urban mobility is increasing rapidly because of growth in urban populations, establishment of multiple employment sub-centers, suburbanization of households, better education, higher workforce participation rates, and rising incomes. An increase in discretionary spending is leading to higher household transportation budgets. Middle-income households in particular are investing in private vehicles such as motorized two-wheelers (TWs) and cars. At the same time, policies to reduce vehicle ownership through regulations and user costs remain underdeveloped and weakly enforced. This further increases households' willingness to use vehicles, especially for non-discretionary work trips. Higher private vehicle use is affecting other quality of life issues such as time spent commuting, accident rates, noise pollution, and particulate and greenhouse gas emissions. In part, this higher vehicle ownership and use is driven by land use dynamics in Indian cities, where growth within city municipal boundaries is constrained by regulations limiting floor-area ratios. As a result, much of the new growth has taken place in urban peripheries where land is cheap and building costs are low. In these peripheral areas, existing small and medium towns have become anchors for agglomeration, transforming into bedroom communities for emergent middle-class groups. Urban peripheral areas are usually undersupplied with transportation infrastructure such as roads or bus transit. This dissertation unpacks the question of why the middle-class in India is driven to owning and using TWs and cars by asking the following: (1) How does work location influence travel by public and private modes? (2) What factors encourage vehicle ownership in middle-class households? (3) What factors drive up vehicle use in middle-class households? The research was conducted using a travel survey dataset from the Greater Mumbai Region (GMR) that represents 1.5% of the households there. The GMR is among the most populated megacity regions in the world, housing over 22 million people. Its growth illustrates the transformation from a monocentric to a polycentric city which is seen in many rapidly growing Indian cities. In seeking to develop an understanding of how work location affected travel, this research identified employment sub-centers using work destination data. Of all middle-class home-based work trips, 67 percent ended in a sub-center, while 33 percent did not. Mean travel times and mean travel distances by train, TW and intermediate public transportation (IPT) modes such as rickshaws were longer for work destinations in sub-centers than for work destinations in the urban periphery, but trips made by buses were shorter in sub-centers. Car users traveled longer and farther compared to TW users for home-based work trips in the GMR. Trains were the speediest mode of travel in the GMR, but traveling by a TW or car was speedier than bus or IPT travel – confirming that having a private vehicle has advantages. This research used a…

▼ Omaha By Design (OBD) began as an idea for improving
the built environment of Omaha, and evolved into a local
corporate-sector-led initiative. OBD collaborated with the city
governance, the real estate sector, and neighborhoods for creating
a citywide
urban design plan and corresponding codes. This
dissertation studies the process of the OBD plan from
urban
governance and political economic perspectives and employs
theoretical concepts of
urban regimes, collaborative governance,
and citizen participation to inform
urban design literature. During
this study, it became apparent that these theoretical concepts were
not entirely effective in explaining several dimensions of the OBD
process, leading to secondary insights for these concepts. ❧ The
scholarship on
urban design plans typically overlooks the process
dimension. Rather, the literature comprises of comparative studies
of plans, content analysis of
form controls and
urban design
guidance systems, and case studies of completed projects. By
focusing on the process, this study examines how
urban design
visions are transformed, contents of the codes are altered, and
initial intents of the plans are modified by the nature of
collaboration and participation among various regimes, interest
groups, and institutional and political actors. ❧ The primary
research question of this study is: How does governance dimension
explain the process of an
urban design plan and its implementation?
The secondary but related questions are: (1) How do recent
developments of collaborative governance and participatory planning
revise the notion of
urban regimes? (2) How does this revised
notion of
urban regimes contribute to understanding the production
of
urban form? This study employs a single case study based
qualitative framework of data collection and analysis. Three types
of secondary cases about collaboration, private sector
participation, and
urban design plan process, supplement the
primary case to augment the validity and reliability of the
findings. ❧ Overall, the OBD initiative is found successful,
because its collaborative model for an
urban design plan united
stakeholders from the public, private, and nonprofit sectors for
the first time, generated awareness, and led citizens of Omaha to
realize their role in shaping
urban design and
form issues for the
community. The drawbacks in the OBD process include: weaknesses in
the vision and design of the plan, greater focus on the planning
but not enough on implementation, a lack of specificity and rigor
in the formulation of the codes, and the promoters of the plan
relenting to the demands of the interest groups. ❧ The findings
reveal that “internal” and “external” aspects of governance
influence the realization of an ideal
urban design vision into
corresponding codes. These “internal” dimensions are: (1)
multi-faceted stakeholders; (2) nature of the
urban design vision;
(3) absence of meaningful participation of the community; (3)
problems in implementation arising from consultants conveying a
limited knowledge about institutional…

▼ What causes some cities to have higher levels of ethnic violence than others do? This research explores whether the
urban form affects the level of ethnic violence in a city.
Here, the term
urban form refers to identifiable physical characteristics of a city: paths, edges, districts, nodes, and landmarks. Contemporary understanding of the physical city, as a determinant of outcomes or even as a target in ethnic violence is very limited. Although ethnic conflict is a prominent global phenomenon, ethnic violence occurs in some narrow streets and crowded neighborhoods, but not others. In addition, social scientists have focused on the ethnicization of
urban spaces, but its effect on levels of ethnic violence is largely unstudied.
The central hypothesis is that cities where the
urban form is “ethnicized” are more likely to experience violent ethnic conflict than cities where the
urban form is largely shared, secular, or multi-ethnic.
India is a rapidly urbanizing globalized country with much ethnic diversity, features typical of many post-colonial nations in the global Southeast. The study involved a simultaneous ethnographic, geographic, and spatial comparison of two Indian cities, Surat and Ahmedabad, and the Hindu-Muslim ethnic relations in those cities. Ahmedabad has experienced the most Hindu-Muslim violence of any Indian city (using number of violence-related deaths as a measure). In contrast, Surat has been peaceful. This disparity is especially interesting since Surat and Ahmedabad are part of the same Indian state with similar linguistic, political, and demographic features. These questions are addressed through an analysis of semi-structured interviews and cognitive mapping exercises. The study includes 66 respondents: 36 in Surat and 30 in Ahmedabad.
The research concludes that the
urban form is an important factor in ethnic conflict. This finding has several research and policy implications which include a shift in the way various practitioners operate in the
urban context.

▼ The main purpose of this dissertation is to assess the effectiveness of form-based codes in contributing to good urban form. Cities are increasingly adopting form-based codes as an alternative to conventional zoning to guide future development, however there is yet not a comprehensive evaluation of its effectiveness in doing so. Moreover, there is little empirical evidence that form-based codes are being adopted for the public good. I use a two-pronged approach to examine the planning process involved in developing form-based codes and the product of this process, the adopted codes, within the theoretical frameworks of the theory of good city form (Lynch, 1984) and the theory of the city as a growth machine (Logan & Molotch, 2007). I use mixed methods to examine multiple case studies for the extent to which form-based codes integrate principles of good city form, and for evidence of the influence of the growth machine in the planning process of form-based codes. Through analysis of planning documents, interviews, and other media sources, the findings reveal that form-based codes do not necessarily promote principles of good city form to a greater extent than conventional zoning regulations and that the growth machine does appear to compromise the potential of form-based codes in contributing to good city form. Thus, form-based codes can effectively address certain issues but are not in themselves a panacea. In the context of zoning reform efforts and policies addressing contemporary urban issues at various government levels, the adoption of form-based codes is essentially an institutional response to the contemporary problems of urban development that does not go far enough in contributing more positively to facilitate good city form. Thus, the adoption of new development regulations such as form-based codes can be seen as a missed opportunity to adopt regulations that mitigate the effects of existing conventional zoning and contribute to an urban form that meets the needs and desires of the community and society at large. This research cautions policymakers and planners contemplating the adoption of form-based codes of the potential ineffectiveness of form-based regulations in achieving certain objectives for their community.

▼ The main force that affects the city’s
urban form is the process of
urban growth. Kurdistan Region encounters great challenges characterized by high population growth and rapid expansion towards the surrounding rural region. The last five decades witnessed a series of wars and other political conflicts which has made the whole Iraq unstable and affected the performance of planning institutions, patterns of physical development, and destruction of social and physical infrastructure. As a result, the cities in Kurdistan Region- also in whole Iraq- did not keep track of perceptive planning schedules which generated many conflicts in the
form and the structure of the cities and hardly influenced land use pattern, provision of essential infrastructure and the quality of the built environment, therefore, this has created a type of
urban form and structure that is a malfunction and is not user-friendly.
This research explores the way for the future
urban development in Kurdistan to adopt the concept of sustainable
urban growth. The notion of pursuing sustainable
urban development is promoted through seeking better physical development that can uplift the quality of the
urban built environment. Furthermore, the research explores the challenges facing the context and potentials needed for embracing sustainable development.
The outcome of this research is depicted in the
form of conceptual proposal suggesting compactness, density, mixed use, accessibility, diversity, enhancing greening and residents’ satisfaction as criteria for sustainable physical development in the cities of Kurdistan. Moreover, this dissertation recommends general strategies as the fundamental basement for changing towards sustainability. The recommendations are related to; regulatory and institutional structure, spatial practices and current opportunities for early change.

The City urban tissue consists mainly of residential area, the function, which being the most common and extended over the protagonist role of public space, is what constitutes the connective tissue of the city. This fact linked with the housing crisis that crossed the twentieth century, defines the object of analyses – public housing projects, developed between 1910 and 2010, in Lisbon.
An analytical and interpretative research sustains a comparative process for the morphological study of urban housing project of public promotion and aims to: identify morphological patterns in public housing production and analyze the role of these projects in the city construction.
The research proposes the construction of a chronology and a typological framework throughout the analyses of reality and its invariants. The research is based on supra-structural factors, the analysis of the city structure as well as a morphological study of the built material. That, articulated with the analysis of a diachronic designed scheme, builds the argument of this work.
The design of a classification also allows a reflection on the ability of these projects to make city instead of just solving a housing shortage.

This research investigates the microclimate and the morphology features of the central campus of the UFRN, in Natal-RN, through the use of bioclimatic tools of analysis in order to assist the implementation of the campus Master Plan. It develops a diagnosis of the evolution and growth of the urban space surveyed by analyzing its initial plan and the basic urban conception behind it, as well as the morphology and typologies utilized. The study makes a qualitative analysis of the local microclimate by using Katzschner (1997) methodology, with land-use and topography maps, building heights, vegetation and soil covering. It also makes use of the methodology proposed by Oliveira (1993), which examines, from the bioclimatic standpoint, the human environment as related to the urban form (site and built mass). It identifies zones whose climatic characteristics are representative of the local microclimate and classifies them into areas to be strictly preserved, areas to be protected and areas to be improved. By means of the methodology for spatial and environmental assessment developed by Bustos Romero (2001), the survey selects characteristic points of each area in order to register the environmental data relative to the two basic seasons found in the region where the campus is located, that is, the dry and the rainy season,…
