The dissertation examines the philosophical bases of the political theory of Marsilius of Padua and the theoretical streams from which it derives its sources. At the same time it highlights the radical character of his political thought especially its characteristics which caused widespread disruptions to the medieval tradition. Especially it highlights the fact that Marsilius utilized concepts in new and different ways than their hitherto conventional uses and therefore introduced a completely new perspective. The methodology of the dissertation is a combination of historical and analytical approaches that highlight the elements that constitute the everlasting importance of the political thought of Marsilius. This thesis examines the political philosophy of Marsilius, especially the way in which it answers the question "what is the state and how it is constructed". It becomes evident that his thoughts on this matter are based on a radical interpretation ofPolitics and Nicomachean Ethics, which shifts the emphasis on the worldly life. This radical interpretation is based on an epistemological and methodological naturalism which is inspired by the general biological and physical works of Aristotle. This approach leads Marsilio to adopt a different anthropological vision from that of Aristotle or Augustine, a different approach to nature, and a vision for the political community which does not consider that the latter emerges as a natural creature but as a discovery of the human species. Indeed, his political theory largely distances itself from the Aristotelian final cause as a guiding clue for interpreting the phenomenon of political and state. At the same time it avoids the documentation of the political phenomenon of ethical prerequisites in regards to the people. Contrary to the medieval Aristotelians Marsilio’s starting point is not the search for the ideal polity: He thinks that only if you ensure peace you will be able to establish good governance. Indeed, according to this study, for Marsilius the political community it’s not only the place to achieve rational goals but primarily the place where conflicts and individual interests are being managed. Community emerges in his work as both a group of people pursuing their particular interests and as a legal system where power comes only from one part of the state, the government. Politics are now clearly distinguished from morality and religion. However, to avoid arbitrariness in the above request of civic self-determination, Marsilius claims that ethics and the rational objectives of justice express themselves through the general assembly of all citizens or the strongest, both quantitatively and qualitatively, on their part. Marsilius gives to the will of this body, which he calls "legislator," the whole power which legalizes the operation of the State and assigns the task of making critical decisions, ie the enactment of laws and the election and control government. Finally, the emergence of freedom as an absolute good is the result of the constitutional…
