▼ This study focused on quality management at the HCT. The HCT implements a quality programme, the Program Quality Assurance (PQA). Based on the Baldrige’s Education Criteria for Performance Excellence, which comprises seven Criteria, the study added an eighth Criterion, that is, Organisational Culture, to investigate whether or not the added Criterion has any impact on the implementation of the quality programmes. Both quantitative (using questionnaires) and qualitative (using interviews and content analysis of the PQA) approaches were used to identify the influence of Organisational Culture on the seven Baldrige Criteria and on the implementation of the quality programmes by the HCT. A questionnaire based on the SERVQUAL methodology was also employed to identify the extent of satisfaction of the HCT students with the quality of services and programmes offered to them by the HCT. Quantitative Research findings indicated that Strategic Planning is related to Leadership and MAKM, Staff Focus is related to Leadership and MAKM, Process Management is related to Strategic Planning, Staff Focus and MAKM, Process Management and Leadership are indirectly related through Strategic Planning and Staff Focus, Staff Focus is related to Strategic Planning, Student Focus and MAKM, Student Focus and Leadership are indirectly related through Strategic Planning and Staff Focus, Results is related to Process Management and Student Focus, Results and Leadership are indirectly related through Strategic Planning, Process Management, Staff Focus and Student Focus, and There is a relationship between Organisational Culture and the MBNQA seven Criteria. In terms of student satisfaction with the services provided by the HCT, the majority of respondent students agreed with all items of the SERVQUAL questionnaire. The Tangible dimensions were the utmost concern by HCT students, followed by the Assurance dimensions. The HCT’s organisational culture was also found to have substantial influence of the outcomes of the other seven categories of the MBNQA

This dissertation undertakes the experimental analysis of multispectral reflectance data to remotely differentiate and lithologically map the extrusive carbonatites from the adjoining rock units in the Al-Uyaynah region located within the northeastern terrain of UAE. The study employs visible/near-infrared (VNIR), shortwave-infrared (SWIR) spectral measurements developed in the laboratory using ASD, Landsat OLI, and the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) images of extrusive carbonatites in Al-Uyaynah metamorphic sole units. Chapter 1 of the study is a succinct overview of the entire effort. It also encompasses the context of remote sensing and the use of the reflected spectrum from visible to shortwave-infrared in mineral exploration. In particular I focus on carbonatite identification and analysis for the purpose of geological mapping. In Chapter 2 of this study, I perform tests and analyses on new Landsat 8 image data over Al-Uyaynah- UAE so as to examine the validitity of this system for medium resolution distantly sensed reflectance measurements. Specifically, I examine the utility of Landsat 8 imagery to define carbonatite outcrops and relevant lithological components. Chapter 3 of the study examines the Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) VNIR and SWIR data over the Al-Uyaynah region. In this Chapter I leveraged an existing low resolution geologic map, ASD laboratory measurements, and field data to examine the spatial distrubtion of carbonatites, alkali volcanics, metavolcanics, and an ophiolite complex using ASTER imagery. I further tested the efficency of four different mapping algorithms for their utility in effectively discriminating between the units and their locations. Chapter 4 of my dissertation examines the relationship between the composition and spectral charachteristics of carbonatite rocks. In this Chapter, carbonatite samples were examined spectrally within the visible near infrared (VNIR) and short wave infrared (SWIR) bands using a lab-based spectroradiometer device (ASD). The carbonatite rocks samples, were analyzed geochemically to determine the major oxides components in the weight percentage (wt%) using X-ray fluorescence (XRF). Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS) techniques were then applied in order to determine the rare earth elements (REEs) concentrations in the carbonatites. The ASD spectra and the chemical analysis results offered us a deep understading of the connection between the rock composition and spectral behavior of Al-Uyaynah carbonatite rocks. In Chapter 5 of this study, the entire research effort is combined in a synthesis that links the outcomes from each chapter into a comprehensive study of the spectral characteristics of carbonatites from the Al-Uyaynah region. Background: An increased incidence of acute group A ß-hemolytic Streptococcal (GABHS) pharyngitis has been reported anecdotally at the Welcare Hospital in Dubai. Aim: To describe the outcomes of patients with acute GABHS pharyngitis who received standard therapy at the Welcare hospital emergency unit in Dubai. Objectives To determine the time elapsed before patients experience a clinically significant reduction in pain. To describe the side-effect profile of standard treatment received for acute GABHS pharyngitis. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study design. Consecutive sampling of 123 patients was done from December, 2013 to March, 2014. A questionnaire was used to record demographic data and severity of GABHS before patients received standard treatment. The Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) was used to measure pain severity at baseline and during follow-up. Adults diagnosed with GABHS pharyngitis who received dexamethasone as part of standard treatment offered were included. Results: Clinical pain relief, which was suggested as a VAS score of 4, was achieved by 5.7% of the patients at 12 hours. At 24 hours, 55.3% of the patients reported a VAS score of 4. The mean VAS score of the patients at this time was 4.12. A total of 99.2% of the patients reported a VAS score of 4 or lower at 36 and 48 hours. Paired t-test revealed statistically significant difference between the VAS scores at 12, 24, 36 and 48 hours and baseline (p=0.000). This suggests that clinical pain relief was achieved by 55.3% of the patients at 24 hours. At 48 hours, 21.1% of the patients reported a VAS score of 0. None of the patients reported any side effects associated with the one dose use of dexamethasone. Conclusion: The findings suggest that dexamethasone is safe and effective to use as adjuvant for management of pain associated with acute GABHS pharyngitis. Almost all patients experienced significant pain relief by 36 and 48 hours and no side-effects related to dexamethasone use were recorded. Further definitive randomised controlled trials are needed to establish these findings as evidence for practice.

▼ The Lower Cretaceous Thamama Group host some of the world's most prolific oil and gas reservoirs, yet the key controls on reservoir quality and production are poorly understood. This dissertation focuses on a volumetrically significant, algal-dominated, low-permeability, microporous reservoir within the Thamama 1 interval. The following includes the sedimentology , chemostratigraphy and quantitative pore architecture of the Thamama 1A as it relates to lithofacies, including the stratigraphic framework and depositional environments of this reservoir interval. The Thamama 1A represents an overall deepening upward, transgressive deposit on a low angle carbonate ramp with depositional settings ranging from distal outer ramp to distal inner ramp environments. For correlation purposes [delta]13C and [delta]18O stable isotope analysis resulted in completing a previously incomplete chemostratigraphic section for the paleo-Bab basin. These new and comprehensives curves provide valuable tool for inter- and intra-field correlation. Results from this study also provide a new understanding of the effects of pore architecture on fluid flow. A new methodology for microporosity quantification using QEMSCAN® technology is presented which is capable of imaging microporosity that is below optical resolution. This new method provides a more robust and accurate estimate of porosity, pore size, and pore shape distribution in microporous reservoirs. Results are compared to a variety of other analytical techniques including nitrogen gas adsorption and mercury porosimetry. Total porosity, pore size, and pore shape distribution, permeability and specific surface areas are measured and tortuosities are calculated. Porosity values as well as pore size distributions agreed both quantitatively and qualitatively across all techniques. In addition, pore architecture data showed a clear distinction between lithofacies types, indicating that physical rock properties are likely to control fluid flow and reservoir response. Understanding the pore architecture and its effects on fluid flow will help to optimize reservoir production and ultimately perhaps increase EOR recoveries from this large oil and gas field. This thesis by publication explores multilingual language choices in oracy and literacy in a superdiverse context, the Emirate of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Much of the literature to date on multilingualism in superdiverse societies has been based on research conducted in contexts in which migration has risen rapidly in the last twenty years (e.g. London, UK or Antwerp, Belgium), bringing the opportunities and perceived threats of languages and cultures in contact, even though the traditional inhabitants of these countries represent the majority of the population, and their languages continue to be used and valorized. There is relatively little literature focusing on contexts in which recent accelerated migration has led to the minoritization of the resident dominant population and the marginalization of its language or dialect. One such context is the UAE, which is a quintessential superdiverse society in that the traditional inhabitants of the region are now a minority in their own country, albeit a powerful minority, and their variety of Arabic, Emirati Arabic, has become just one of many languages and dialects that are in daily use in its cities, including Dubai.

The study examines how this superdiversity manifests itself in the language choices of young Emirati women. It employs an ethnographically-inspired methodology, incorporating both qualitative and quantitative methods, in order to describe the choices made by female Emirati undergraduates and graduates of a national university, in (varieties of) Arabic, English and other languages, and the reasons for these choices. It also explores the opportunities and tensions inherent in these language choices in an increasingly superdiverse context.

The thesis consists of three main parts. Firstly, there is an analysis of Emirati women’s reported preferences with regard to reading and writing for pleasure in Arabic and English, along with their preferences regarding languages of university study. The study finds that predispositions developed in the home and at school significantly influence these women’s orientations towards Arabic or English, but also that leisure time interests developed through either language can influence their preferences. The second part of the thesis examines changes in language and literacy across three generations and then goes on to examine language choices in Emirati homes. ▼ When one thinks of the United Arab Emirates, one may picture a country that is one of the richest countries in the world and has the money to build resorts, buildings, and tourism destinations. The UAE is a Middle Eastern country, and has Islam as its official religion. When some think of Islam and women, images of oppression and strict rules may come to mind. This extreme view is not the case with the UAE, because they practice a moderate form of Islam. Even though they are one of the richest countries in the world, this does not mean that problems do not arise. The biggest issue facing the country is the influx of migrant workers, and this has lead to the Nationals being the minority in their own country. Due to this problem, the Government has created an Emiratization Strategy to get more Nationals, male and female, into the labor force. The Emiratization Strategy is one that benefits women greatly in the country, and shows the Government’s commitment to women being contributing members of the UAE’s society The Emiratization Strategy focuses on education and labor. Over the past years, women have made large strides in both of these areas. Looking at Government programs, state-run women’s organizations, census numbers, and surveys, one will be able to see this. In regards to education, women in the country are more literate than the males, and there are also more women earning higher degrees. Women’s enrollment at all levels of education has been increasing every year, and Government programs and women’s organizations also focus on women receiving an education. Over the years, more and more women have entered the labor force. Most women work in the public sector. This means that the Government is their boss. The private sector is the area, in which, female and male Nationals have the most trouble working. Most jobs in the country are private sector jobs; therefore, the Government needs to do a better job with encouraging more Nationals to work in this sector. Private sector employers would rather hire non Nationals, and Nationals would rather not work for them. These employers also, in some cases, would rather hire males instead of females. This goes back to the fact that the UAE is a patriarchal society, and some views like this occur. Nationals also feel like they will not get paid as well if they work in the private sector compared to the public sector. In order for more Nationals, specifically more women Nationals, to be hired in the private sector, the Government should make sure the Nationals know all the facts about working in the private sector. They also need to make it more appealing for them to work in this sector. The Government may also try to educate the foreign companies working in their country on how to be more appealing for women Nationals. The women need to feel comfortable in their work environment, and this is one of the main problems they have working in the private sector. ▼ Crime and other kinds of anti-social behaviour are viewed as serious social problems. These issues exist in all countries, but they are especially prevalent within the UAE, a country that recently has undergone rapid social changes within a short period of time. There is a vital need to identify appropriate preventive programmes suitable to the surrounding culture, as well as factors that could lead to effective solutions. Because there is a deficiency of research on crime prevention within Arab countries, this study focuses explicitly on the prevention of juvenile delinquency in the UAE. It considers processes of implementing effective crime prevention strategies, approaches, and programmes. This study uses qualitative methods, in the form of document analyses and semi-structured interviews. The first element of data-gathering is an exploration of the context of juvenile delinquency and juvenile crime prevention in Abu Dhabi, something which has not comprehensively been done before. The second part concentrates on participants from the Abu Dhabi Police force and other organisations involved in preventive work in the area of juvenile delinquency, in order to obtain extensive and detailed information about the dynamics of juvenile crime and potential strategies of prevention. The findings of this research offer several recommendations that could help to implement successful prevention strategies in the Middle East in general and in the UAE in particular. This study identifies and explains critical risk factors, and explores the cultural considerations that must be taken into account when designing and implementing prevention programmes. It identifies several requirements that should be considered for the formation of partnerships in the prevention of juvenile crime. It includes some important recommendations for the Abu Dhabi Police force for its future development and improvement. It also contains some general recommendations for the Government of the United Arab Emirates. Further research directions are also suggested, in light of this study’s findings and its potential limitations.

ENGLISH SUMMARY : Purpose: To explore parental experiences on the role of wheelchairs in the lives of children with mobility impairments in Dubai. Methods: Seven participants were recruited through purposive sampling and their experiences were explored by conducting semi-structured interviews. The audio recordings were transcribed and thematically analysed. Results: The findings showed that wheelchairs were an essential part of the children`s lives, which enabled their participation in the home, the school and the community. Procurement processes were difficult owing to a lack of assessment and prescription as well as insurance companies providing little assistance with payment. Participants described Dubai as a wheelchair friendly city, and two overarching themes emerged, firstly, Wheelchair: “It is her life”, and, secondly, Participation: Isolation versus inclusion Conclusion: The study is the first of its kind in Dubai and revealed that the wheelchair played an important role in the child’s life and allowed participation in life roles that brought joy and fulfilment. Without wheelchairs, children would be isolated and frustrated. However, some of the participants were not satisfied with their child’s current wheelchair and felt the chair was not appropriate. It is recommended that the Government of the Dubai develop policies to guide wheelchair service provision in the country. In addition, insurance providers should collaborate with the government to adhere to the policy to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all.

▼ This autoethnography discusses my 15 months in the United Arab Emirates in a Muslim girls’ school as part of a school reform program during 2007-8. The rise of high stakes educational testing globally has created situations where non-Western cultures have felt pressured to quickly meet the demands of rankings, such the PISA system, so as to be competitive in a global market. There has been little research published in English on the experiences of school reform workers in cross cultural settings in the Middle East. The purpose of this study is to address this lack, to explore the challenges of working in this region from a personal perspective and to present my learnings from this experience. I use my journal entries and memories from the UAE to discuss my experiences in this cross cultural setting. My stories narrate the dilemmas I faced working with teachers and school leadership who were enacting different ways of knowing to my own. My experiences reflect the multi layered messy process of working across cultural expectations with school staff who were faced with implementing a Western curriculum purchased from Australia. Having this new curriculum imposed on schools in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi raised issues that school staff and the reform project workers had to grapple with in this typically authoritarian society. I follow my evolution as a teacher, principal, academic and school reform advisor and discuss my growing awareness of the differences in beliefs and practices between my views as a Western educator and those I saw being enacted in the schools in the UAE. This disconnect becomes more obvious as the discourse of the school reform agenda underpinning the directives from our company came in contact with the realities of the school’s long held practices. Within this autoethnographic study, I consider the impact of place on identity as I document my connections to place and landscape in Australia and in the UAE. Finally, I explore creative ways of thinking about and processing my experiences through different aspects of image and the visual. Advisors/Committee Members: Western Sydney University. ▼ Being a rapidly developing country the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has realised the need for highly qualified and properly skilled manpower to cope with the country‟s ambitious development plans. This has resulted in high investments in education and training in the UAE. The government facilitated high technological tools for education. These tools suffered from underutilisation and a failure to be properly integrated in the curricula. The literature review indicates that today‟s knowledge-driven economy demands a workforce equipped with complex skills such as creativity and collaboration. Universities must not only teach the necessary technical skills and knowledge, but also the culture of creativity and teamwork. The learning theories emphasise the importance of learning by doing and collaboration processes to achieve effective learning. Learning theories also emphasise the importance of teaching creative skills to the students. These approaches are congruent with use of technologies, such as visual design studio (VDS), for the purpose of architecture education in design courses, but such use is lacking in the UAE. The present research focuses on implementing and evaluating technologies such as the VDS in architecture education in an attempt to formulate a framework for implementing technologies combined by creative and collaborative skills in the UAE. Since implementing a new technology into education practice is complex task, this work will formulate a framework that will help in shifting from the traditional learning to learning with technology. This work will take into consideration factors such as pedagogical issues, collaboration creative work and architecture practice and industrial needs in the UAE. The aim of the current research is to formulate a framework for implementing VDS at the conceptual end of the architecture design education in the UAE. This research will apply an action research method framework. The action research will be generated into three phases. Each phase will consist of three stages, the descriptive stage which will analyse the need and criteria of the method, the constructive stage which will include the process involved in constructing the framework and the evaluative stage which will include the testing and evaluation. The resulting framework should satisfy the UAE‟s needof advanced technological tools for enhancing design education taking in consideration the socio-cultural dimension of the UAE. As technology is changing rapidly; future research should concentrate on adding further technological tools such as mobile learning. Also as this work provided a framework for integrating technology in architecture design education, yet it is not limited to this discipline only. Other disciplines could benefit from this emerging model and further research could be conducted.

▼ This thesis examines the implementation and effectiveness of Value Engineering in the United Arab Emirates and is restricted to major building construction projects. The aim of the reasurch is to investigate possible areas of improvement and could potentially enhance the effectiveness of the managent and control of the Value Engineering process, for building construction project in the Unietd Arab Emirates. The objectives of the research is to use the data collected to formulate a model for improvement of the Value Engineering process used in building construction projects in the United Arab Emirates. Before a model to be formulated, the following hypotheses need to be addressed. - Value Engineering is currently being effectively implemented - Value Engineering currently provides tangible and measurable benefits - Current practices in the application of Value Engineering can be improved A triangulation approach is employed, with data collected using questionnaires, semi structured interviews and case studies. The data collected was analysed and critically assessed to compare the Value Engineering process conducted in the United Arab Emirates with current best practice and to identify specific area for improvement. Based on the literature review, it became evident that the following seven (7) key factors raised by the researchers were identified for the potential to effect improvements. 1. Structure and Method of the Value Engineering process. 2. Timing and execution of the Value Engineering and workshop studies. 3. Composition of the Workshop team. 4. Understanding of the Value Engineering process. 5. Value Engineering during the Construction phase. 6. Performance measurement based on costs. 7. The effect of environment and culture on Value Engineering ii A model for improving the effectiveness of Value Engineering in the United Arab Emirates was then developed, validated and refined, based on the responses of seventy two (72) experienced clients, construction professionals, value engineers, project mangers and contractors. The responses from expatriates and Emirates nationals were also compared and the following recommendations were incorporated in the model. The identified improvement into the design consultant agreement is to:- - Include Value Engineering in the overall project programme. The identified improvement recommendations for the design stages are:- 1. Conduct Value Engineering workshop by the end of the preliminary design stage. 2. ▼ The recent financial crisis, not surprisingly, has often been attributed to 'failure in corporate governance'. There is a belief that the resulting public scandal may have been minimized if not entirely prevented if the Boards had acted properly. Both in the developing and developed countries, there is a widespread belief that improved corporate governance mechanisms can lead to effective Board operations. However, Board effectiveness remains an elusive concept and what makes a Board an effective governance mechanism remains a fundamental question. Many studies have been carried out on Directors' capabilities, their contributions to Board and Board effectiveness; however, none have examined these issues within the context of Public Sector Boards (PSBs) in Abu Dhabi- a fast growing developing economy. The present research, a first time study, explores the issues related to Board effectiveness, including Director's capabilities and contribution within four major public sector Boards. Following the tradition of social constructionism, the research adopts an interpretive approach to understand the perceptions and views of the Board members concerning the factors which influence their effectiveness and the effectiveness of the PSBs Boards. Employing an inductive methodology, sixteen cases were selected to generate the relevant qualitative data required for analysis. The thematic analysis led to the emergence of seven major categories of themes, factors, and identification of some 157 'issues', including Directors personal characteristics, Board dynamics, constraints, demands and opportunities, Directors core capabilities, and most important of all the implicit and explicit socio-cultural influences on the behaviour and interactions of the members on the PSBs Boards. Islamic values and beliefs seemed to positively influence the Boards operations through trust, honesty, and responsibility to others and community. The findings of the study, indicates the intricate and complex nature of influences on the Directors' in particular and Boards' effectiveness, as the whole. The findings make a series of contributions to our present knowledge of PSBs operations and the behaviour of the members on the Board by contextualising the principles of corporate governance, and Board effectiveness in Abu Dhabi, public sector. The practical implications are numerous; some could be applied to other Boards outside the public sector domain. They have far reaching implications for policy and practice to facilitate the increased effectiveness of the Directors and the Boards as the whole.

▼ This study explored the factors which affect the feeding and weaning practices of Emirati mothers as well as the experiences and perceptions which influence their breastfeeding decisions. It used both quantitative and qualitative methods to examine Emirati mothers’ understanding of infant feeding and to identify the factors which appeared to have a relevant effect and locate them in their cultural context. n the survey, a convenientce sample of 593 mothers with infants aged up to 2 years was interviewed face to face in the maternal and child healthcare centers in Al Ain, Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The interview was based on a pretested structured questionnaire. The results of multiple logistic analysis showed that the time of initiation of the first breastfeed was significantly associated with the infant’s birth weight (OR=2.007; P<0.023), parity (OR=2.139; P<0.001) and rooming in (OR=21.70; P<0.001). As for the feeding patterns, the results of the multiple logistic analysis revealed that rooming in (OR=4.485; P<0.001), feeding on demand (OR=2.290; P<0.005) and feeding more frequently at night (P<0.001) emerged as significant factors associated with exclusive or almost exclusive breastfeeding practices. The duration of breastfeeding rate was significantly influenced by many variables. Concerning the duration of lactational amenorrhea, the, the multiple logistic analysis showed that mother's age, breastfeeding duration and the early introduction of formula milk and solid food emerged as significant variables. Among the 593 infants in the study, 24.1% were predominantly breastfed,25% of the infants were exclusively breastfed, and 49.4% were almost exclusively breastfed since birth. Fifteen Emirati mothers from each city were interviewed about their breastfeeding practices, beliefs and perceptions. The following themes emerged: the influence of others, the sources of information, infants’ behavior, knowledge of and attitudes towards current WHO recommendations and mothers’ perception of the benefits of breastfeeding. Health promotions and healthcare facilities failed to deliver the message of the importance of exclusive breastfeeding. Grandmothers and mothers-in-law appeared to influence the mother's breastfeeding practices. In conclusion, there is a need for a national community-based breastfeeding intervention programme for the promoting exclusive breastfeeding practices as part of a primary public health strategy.

▼ This study examined the question of whether there was a difference in the general school experiences of children who move to a new country with an entirely different culture and language and children who immigrate to a country with a language and culture that is similar to their native culture. It was noted that existing literature had stated that immigrant children's school experiences can be affected by any attitudes about the country of immigration and its people which they pick up from their parents as well as from the degree of parents' willingness to interact with the new culture. Based on these postulates, it was predicted that being in a culture different from one's own makes for far more problems in school than merely language or academic difficulties. Subjects in the study consisted of Arab families whose children were attending school in either the United States of America or the United Arab Emirate and who had one or more children in the fourth or fifth grades. All data were collected using researcher-designed questionnaires given to parents, children, and their teachers. Four research questions were formulated which examined the general school experiences of Arabic school children who immigrated to the United Arab Emirate or to the United States. The findings reveal that U.A.E. parents held more positive views of their children's school experiences than did U.S.A. parents. However, children in both U.A.E. and U.S.A. show positive views in terms of general school experiences. Teachers' perceptions of children's school adjustment and level of school success did not differ in association with cultural differences. Both descriptive (computation of frequencies and percentages) and inferential (t-tests, chi square) analyses were conducted. Findings revealed several differences in association with differences in the similarity/dissimilarity of the country of immigration to the country of birth for parents, children, and teacher groups. The study recommended that objective measures, more social variables, gender differences, time period of immigration, different level of schooling, language proficiency and method of teaching be investigated in the future. United Arab Emirates (UAE) is currently undergoing massive educational reform, especially in the teaching and assessment methods of all subject-matter areas. In Abu Dhabi, the capital of UAE, the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) has mandated the revamping of English language teaching and assessment in grades 6-12 through the introduction of English Continuous Assessment Rich Task (ECART), which is a framework that helps teachers implement ongoing and alternative assessments in the English as a Foreign Language classroom (EFL). The purpose of this exploratory multiple case study was three-fold: a) to explore Emirate EFL teachers' beliefs regarding English teaching, learning and assessment in UAE, b) the extent to which their beliefs influenced their use of the ECART framework in the classroom, and c) the impact that different contextual factors – classroom environment, curriculum, professional development – had on their beliefs and classroom practices. The overarching question that guided the current study was: How do Emirate teachers' beliefs regarding English teaching, learning, and assessment in general and the use of an English reform initiative (ECART), in particular, impact their instructional and assessment practice in the classroom? Four EFL experienced teachers from two different schools in the Emirate of AlAin in UAE participated in the current study. Data was generated over a two-month period from interviews, classroom observations, field notes, and document analysis. A constant comparative analysis method was used to analyze the data. The findings of this study revealed that even though Emirate teachers acknowledged some of the benefits of the ECART, they held beliefs that were incompatible with the underlying principles of the reform. Emirate teachers' beliefs regarding what constituted effective English language teaching and assessments were highly consistent with their classroom behaviors. However, in few instances, there was a discrepancy between teachers' reported beliefs and classroom practices as they attempted to implement the ECART. Some of these discrepancies stemmed from the lack of deep understanding of some of the ECART guiding principles, others, from disagreement with its orientation to language teaching and assessment. In addition professional development support for the teachers was limited and of uneven quality. Support for experienced teachers' reflection on change by means of dialogue and instruction in new approaches was not a central element of the ECART, as at least some of the teachers in this study had experienced it. It is hoped that findings from this study will be useful to in-service teachers, teacher preparation programs, and educational policy makers in United Arab Emirates and in other nations where large-scale educational reforms of classroom instruction and assessment are being attempted.

▼ Health and safety issues have always been a major problem and concern in the construction industry. Wherever reliable records are available, construction is found to be one of the most dangerous on health and safety criteria, particularly in developing countries. Efforts have been made to address this problem, but the results have been far from satisfactory, as construction accidents continue to dominate the overall construction industry. Despite the programs implemented by government authorities and measures introduced by companies themselves, the number of construction accidents still remains alarmingly high. In developing countries, safety rules usually do not exist; if they do, the regulatory authority is usually very weak in implementing such rules effectively. The UAE is one of developing countries that are currently enjoying a strong growth in construction activities. Unfortunately, some sectors of its construction industry suffer from poor safety and health conditions. Any framework of the existing occupational and health conditions is fragmented and inadequately enforced, making construction sites more hazardous. It may even be argued that relevant regulations are outdated and irrelevant in day-to-day construction operations. From this perspective this research explores the approved methods adopted in the UK in order to improve the existing code of practice in the UAE and thus introduce the foundations on which appropriate health and safety systems may be built. A framework for Health and Safety management in the UK is suggested. To reach this objective an overview of the published materials as well as the legislation has been undertaken. Questionnaires were designed and distributed to potential construction industry players and interview sessions have been conducted to meet the first objective of the project which to determine the health and safety measures currently applied on construction sites. In addition, structured interviews were carried out with selected managers from a selection of construction and oil companies, medium and large size. This thesis specifically, it investigates the safety perceptions, attitudes, and behaviour of construction workers and management safety practices. Based upon the analysis of the results, this study has demonstrated that the majority of those questioned UAE construction companies have a poor degree of risk awareness and do not seems to take health and safety as an important issue.

Abstract The transformation of many universities to corporate-style governance impacts working conditions, work practices, academic work contracts and the autonomy of faculty. Faculty commitment to university business schools is closely associated with faculty members’ perceptions of organizational life and relationships with institutional managers. Commitment oriented behavioral traits of faculty are related to the design of administration structure, workplace setting, job definition and role expectations. It is important to better understand how these factors relate to faculty commitment in business schools, particularly in multicultural and transitional employment economies. This study utilizes the classic 1991 Meyer and Allen three-component model of organizational commitment to understand how expatriate and national faculty perceive their levels of organizational commitment in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The research interprets qualitative data collected through interviews with business school faculty at six institutions across private and public education sectors in UAE. Five factors emerged as central to faculty commitment in the sample group: economic compensation, organizational values, autonomy, organizational support and justice, and leadership. This study makes three important contributions to organizational commitment literature, both augmenting and challenging received notions of faculty commitment: (1) the study introduces a new student-related dimension to account for how organizational failures to support student quality significantly impact faculty commitment; (2) the study determines that academics in a transitional economy tend to commit to profession, area of discipline, or country, rather than to the business school in which they work; and (3) the study finds that economic compensation is a secondary issue for expatriate faculty working in academic institutions characterized by lack of tenure, threats to faculty career futures linked to contradictions between levels of research support and institutional expectations for research productivity, and a divisive environment where faculty are deeply frustrated by unfair treatment by institutional management.
