▼ Many quantum computation algorithms, and processes like measurement based quantum computing, require the initial state of the quantum computer to be an eigenstate of a specific
unitary operator. Here we study how quantum states that are eigenstates of finite dimensional irreducible representations of the special
unitary (SU(d)) and the permutation (S_n) groups can be efficiently constructed in the computational basis formed by tensor products of the qudit states. The procedure is a
unitary transform, which first uses Schur-Weyl duality to map every eigenstate to a unique Schur basis state, and then recursively uses the Clebsch - Gordan transform to rotate the Schur basis state to the computational basis. We explicitly provide an efficient quantum algorithm, and the corresponding quantum logic circuit, to generate any desired eigenstate of SU(
2) and SU(3) irreducible representations in the computational basis.

▼ In this thesis, we study the Fisher's zeros in lattice gauge theory. The analysis of singularities in the complex coupling plane is an important tool to understand the critical phenomena of statistical models. The Fisher's zero structure characterizes the scaling properties of the underlying models and has a strong influence on the complex renormalization
group transformation flows in the region away from both the strong and weak coupling regimes. By reconstructing the density of states, we try to develop a systematical method to investigate these singularities and we apply the method to SU(
2) and
U(1) lattice gauge models with a Wilson action in the fundamental representation. We first take the perturbative approach. By using the saddle point approximation, we construct the series expansions of the density of states in both of the strong and weak regimes from the strong and weak coupling expansions of the free energy density. We analyze the SU(
2) and
U(1) models. The expansions in the strong and weak regimes for the two models indicate both possess finite radii of convergence, suggesting the existence of complex singularities. We then perform the numerical calculations. We use Monte Carlo simulations to construct the numerical density of states of the SU(
2) and
U(1) models. We also discuss the convergence of the Ferrenberg-Swendsen's method which we use for the SU(
2) model and propose a practical method to find the initial values that improve the convergence of the iterations. The strong and weak series expansions are in good agreement with the numerical results in their respective limits. The numerical calculations also enable the discussion of the finite volume effects which are important to the weak expansion. We calculate the Fisher's zeros of the SU(
2) and
U(1) models at various volumes using the numerical entropy density functions. We compare different methods of locating the zeros. By the assumption of validity of the saddle point approximation, we find that the roots of the second derivative of the entropy density function have an interesting relation with the actual zeros and may possibly reveal the scaling property of the zeros. Using the analytic approximation of the numerical density of states, we are able to locate the Fisher's zeros of the SU(
2) and
U(1) models. The zeros of the SU(
2) stabilize at a distance from the real axis, which is compatible with the scenario that a crossover instead of a phase transition is expected in the infinite volume limit. In contrast, with the precise determination of the locations of Fisher's zeros for the
U(1) model at smaller lattice sizes
L=4, 6 and 8, we show that the imaginary parts of the zeros decrease with a power law of <em>L
-3.07</em> and pinch the real axis at
β= 1.01134, which agrees with results using other methods. Preliminary results at larger volumes indicate a first-order transition in the infinite volume limit.

▼ As part of a long-range project to develop inexpensive, earth-abundant alternatives to the use of rare-earth metals in catalysts, it was discovered that an unusual color is generated when solutions of Ca[1,3-(SiMe3)2C3H3]
2(thf)
2 and terypyridine are mixed in toluene. As the Ca2+ center lacks valence electrons, the deep blue coloration almost certainly arises from a ligand-to-metal charge transfer phenomenon. It was further determined that the color arises with Li+ and K+ centers in addition to Ca2+, and with the [1-(SiMe3)C3H3]– and [N(SiMe3)
2]– anions as well. The key requirements thus appear to be a
Group 1 or
2 metal center, terpyridine, a noncoordinating solvent, and a ligand that contains delocalized π-electrons, such as the bulky amido or allyl ligands used here. All available information indicates that the terpyridine compounds being synthesized exist in a dynamic equilibrium in solution, and the terpyridines are weakly bound to the metal.
Isolation of Ca(η1-C3H5)(η3-C3H5)(18-crown-6) demonstrates that it is possible to manipulate the hapticity of a ligand on a
Group 2 center by adjusting the electron density on the metal with a suitably strong donor ligand. Further use of this capability could lead to the development of more active catalysts based on earth-abundant
Group 2 metals.

▼ Introduction: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is characterized by chronic pruritic relapsing eczematous lesions of the skin. Eosinophilic inflammation in AD is driven by activation of type
2 inflammatory cells including CD4+ T cells and type
2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s). We have shown that type
2 cytokines, namely interleukin (IL)-5 and IL-13, stimulate migration and terminal differentiation of eosinophil progenitor cells (EoPs). We propose that these cytokines are important drivers of tissue eosinophilia in AD lesional skin. This study aimed to quantify, by flow cytometry, cells that produce type
2 cytokines in lesional skin compared to peripheral blood from moderate-severe AD patients.
Methods: In a cross-sectional study of patients with moderate-to-severe AD (n=16), type
2 inflammatory cells were enumerated in blood and cells extracted from excised skin biopsies. By flow cytometry, live, singlet CD45+cells were identified as ILC2 (lin-CD127+CD294+), EoP (CD34+125+), and CD4+ T cells (Lin+CD3+CD4+). Intracellular expression of type
2 cytokines (IL-5 and IL-13) were evaluated in each cell population. In addition, we developed a protocol to enumerate ILC2s by fluorescence immune-histochemistry in lesional versus non-lesional skin samples and skin biopsies taken 24h post-intradermal challenge with allergen versus diluent. Data are expressed as median (interquartile range [IQR]) unless otherwise stated. Cross compartmental comparisons were made using the Wilcoxon rank-sum test and where applicable, correlational analyses were performed using a Spearman’s rank-correlational test.
Results: There was a significantly higher number of total ILC2s in lesional skin compared to blood from AD subjects (556 [99 – 5501] vs 235 [67 – 569] cells/mL, p=0.03). Similarly, IL-5+, IL-13+ ILC2s, were significantly greater in skin compared to blood (6 [1 – 666] vs 1 [1 – 19] cells/mL, p=0.03; 28 [1 – 1357] vs 1 [1 – 7] cells/mL, p=0.01, respectively). We found higher numbers of total and type
2 cytokine positive EoP in lesional skin biopsies from AD patients compared to blood (Total EoP: 815 [285 – 2794] vs 112 [46 – 247] cells/mL, p<0.01; IL-5+EoP: 36 [1 – 129] vs 1 [1 – 23] cells/mL, p=0.07; IL-13+EoP: 92 [10 – 182] vs 1 [1 – 8] cells/mL, p<0.01 and IL-5+IL-13+ILC2: 70 [1 – 158] vs 1 [1 – 12] cells/mL, p=0.02, respectively). In contrast, significantly higher numbers of total and type
2 cytokine positive CD4+ cells were found in blood compared to lesional skin biopsies from AD patients (Total CD4+: 1092 [650 – 1742] vs 58.3 [35.3– 152.4] x 103 cells/mL, p<0.01 and IL-5+IL-13+CD4+ cells: 13.5 x 103 [
2.1 x 103 – 42.9 x 103] vs 3.8 x 103 [1.6 x 103 – 4.9 x 103] cells/mL, p=0.02, respectively). For IF staining, there was a significant higher number of ILC2s in lesional compared to non-lesional skin biopsies and biopsies taken 24h post allergen- compared to diluent challenge (1 [0 –
2] vs 0 [0 - 0] cells/mm2, p=0.008, and
2 [1 –
2] vs 0 [0 – 0] cells/mm2, p=0.0002, respectively). Interestingly, in sex analyses we found significantly greater…

▼ This thesis studies collinearity graphs and commuting involution graphs associated with sporadic group geometries, and the conjugacy classes of semisimple elements in the exceptional Lie-type group E8(2).First we construct plane-line collinearity graphs for the sporadic simple groups and their associated minimal and maximal 2-local parabolic geometries. For such a group and geometry, the plane-line collinearity graph takes all planes of the geometry as its vertices and joins two vertices with an edge if their planes are collinear in the geometry. We construct these graphs for the groups M23, J4, Fi22, Fi23, He, Co3 and Co2. Additionally we construct a variety of collinearity graphs associated with the minimal 2-local geometries of McL.A second short study looks at the commuting involution graphs associated with the Baby Monster sporadic group. These are graphs which take a conjugacy class of involutions as its vertex set and joins two vertices with an edge if they commute. We detail information relating to two such graphs. Finally, we study the conjugacy classes of semisimple elements in the exceptional group E8(2). This study is a joint work with Ali Aubad, John Ballantyne, Alexander McGaw, Peter Neuhaus, Peter Rowley and David Ward in which we determine the structure of centralisers for all such elements including information such as fixed-space dimensions and powering up maps. The ultimate aim is to determine all maximal subgroups of E8(2). This is a lengthy ongoing project and this study forms part of that effort.

▼ This Thesis describes the synthesis and characterisation of new Group 2 tetrahydroborate, alkoxide and organohydroborate complexes and their uses as catalysts for the living ROP and immortal ring-opening polymerisation (iROP) of ε- caprolactone and rac-lactide. Chapter One introduces cyclic esters and possible mechanistic pathways leading to polyesters by ROP. Living and immortal ROP, including their kinetic characteristics are discussed. An overview of ROP from an industrial perspective is also given. Chapter Two describes the synthesis and characterisation of a new series of Group 2 tetrahydroborate complexes supported by a 3-methyl, 5-tert-butyl tris(pyrazolyl)hydroborate ligand. Their activities towards the ROP of ε-caprolactone are presented. Detailed mechanistic studies using spectroscopic techniques are discussed and a new mechanism is proposed. Chapter Three describes the ROP of rac-lactide using the Group 2 tetrahydroborate complexes introduced in Chapter Two, including their mechanistic studies. Chapter Four introduces the new immortal ROP using trialkyl borate and organoborane derivatives as chain-transfer agents (CTAs). The immortal ROP of ε- caprolactone and rac-lactide using Group 2 initiators with trialkyl borates/organoboranes as CTAs from either in situ generation or external addition is discussed. Possible immortal ROP pathways using this new class of CTAs are illustrated. Chapter Five details the synthesis and characterisation of a new series of Group 2 organohydroborate complexes. The ε-caprolactone and rac-lactide ROP activity shown by the complexes presented is discussed and compared with those obtained from the corresponding tetrahydroborate analogues. Chapter Six contains experimental details and characterising data for the new complexes reported in this Thesis. CD Appendix contains .CIF files for all the new crystallographically-characterised complexes.

▼ Although there is a broad research base supporting effective components of reading interventions, less is known about how to implement reading interventions in small groups. The current study investigated the impact of implementing small group reading interventions targeted to student needs guided by the theoretical frameworks of the Instructional Hierarchy (Haring & Eaton, 1978) and Chall’s (1983) stage theory of reading development. A between-participants randomized block design was used to assign 50 second and third grade students to either a targeted or multicomponent small group reading intervention to ensure equal students with decoding and fluency needs were in each condition. Results revealed no differences between conditions on measures of decoding, fluency and comprehension following 4-weeks of intervention. However, students with a decoding need were found to significantly improve their decoding skills compared to students with a fluency need regardless of condition. Observations of the interventions being implemented indicated that all four interventionists modified the interventions or added additional components. Implications for theory and practice are discussed.

▼ In this study, three generations of chiral auxiliary are synthesized and attached to glucose and galactose. The donors containing these chiral auxiliary are synthesized and glycosylations with a variety of glycosyl acceptors are conducted.
The glycosylation results showed that a glycosyl donor substituted with a chiral auxiliary can be employed for the stereoselective introduction of 1, 2-cis glycosides such as ±-glucosides and ±-galactosides. The neighboring group participation by the
chiral auxiliary leads to a quasi-stable anomeric sulfonium ion, which due to steric and electronic factors, is formed as a trans-decalin ring system. Displacement of the sulfonium ion by a glycosyl acceptor leads to the stereoselective formation of
±-glycosides. The use of this new method in combination with traditional neighboring group participation by esters to introduce ²-glycosides makes it possible to synthesize a wide variety of complex carbohydrates with complete anomeric
control.

▼ This thesis studies collinearity graphs and
commuting involution graphs associated with sporadic group
geometries, and the conjugacy classes of semisimple elements in the
exceptional Lie-type group E8(2).First we construct plane-line
collinearity graphs for the sporadic simple groups and their
associated minimal and maximal 2-local parabolic geometries. For
such a group and geometry, the plane-line collinearity graph takes
all planes of the geometry as its vertices and joins two vertices
with an edge if their planes are collinear in the geometry. We
construct these graphs for the groups M23, J4, Fi22, Fi23, He, Co3
and Co2. Additionally we construct a variety of collinearity graphs
associated with the minimal 2-local geometries of McL.A second
short study looks at the commuting involution graphs associated
with the Baby Monster sporadic group. These are graphs which take a
conjugacy class of involutions as its vertex set and joins two
vertices with an edge if they commute. We detail information
relating to two such graphs. Finally, we study the conjugacy classes
of semisimple elements in the exceptional group E8(2). This study
is a joint work with Ali Aubad, John Ballantyne, Alexander McGaw,
Peter Neuhaus, Peter Rowley and David Ward in which we determine
the structure of centralisers for all such elements including
information such as fixed-space dimensions and powering up maps.
The ultimate aim is to determine all maximal subgroups of E8(2).
This is a lengthy ongoing project and this study forms part of that
effort.

These days psychological diagnostics has become essential in various scientific and societal areas. Parallel to its expansion in applications the requirements for psychological diagnostics have increased; on the one hand acting as a basis for objective and valide judgement and on the other hand enabling a timesaving and economical approach. To seriously deliberate these thoughts the aim of this study was to develop a test procedure of the AID 2 (version 2.2) by Kubinger (2009a) for the subtests “social and factual consistency” (“Soziale und Sachliche Folgerichtigkeit“), “discovering synonyms” (“Synonyme finden”) and “abstracting functionalities” (“Funktionen abstrahieren”) applicable on groups. The two last-mentioned subtests have been assessed by testing 679 students in Austria. A likelihood-quotient statistic (Anderson, 1973) with the splitting criteria median, sex and region has been conducted in order to verify the conformance of the item pools with the Rasch model. After the a posteriori elimination of a maximum of two items in the corresponding test versions of the subtests the conformance according to the Rasch model has been accepted. Future research should focus on Rasch model conformance by investigating larger sample sizes as well as the application of LLTM for associated test versions in the corresponding subtests. The potential of setting up binding rules in the phase of item development can have a beneficial influence on semi-automated…

Background: When a patient suffers from long-term illness such as type 2 diabetes, there is a need for knowledge to deal with their illness. Earlier research shows that group education for patients with type 2 diabetes is of significance for, among other things, HbA1c, which in turn reduces the risk of complications. However, the main problem with group education is that not all patients are offered to participate and that a significant percentage of those that are invited to group education sessions decline the offer. Aim: The purpose was to describe perceptions of newly diagnosed patients with type 2 diabetes to refrain from offering group instruction. Method: Nine semi-structured interviews have been analysed by using a phenomenographic approach. The interviews were analysed through seven steps to unveil the perceptions of group education in people with type 2 diabetes which chose to renounce the offered group education. Results: The analysis resulted in two different categories of descriptions seen from a patient perspective: an opportunity to share experiences with others in the same situation but with the risk of “exposing” themselves and their illness in a group with unknown and the form of learning and knowledge is not adapted to the person´s specific needs and is not prioritized when the disease is not perceived as serious. Conclusion: A possible understanding of the result is that group education does not suit everyone but a verity of form of education are required so that the patients can get the education that themselves perceive as giving knowledge, in appropriate…

▼ Abstract
The ligand dpamc (
2,2’-dipyridylammoniumchloride) has been synthesized from
dpa (
2,2’-dipyridylamine) and acyl chloride via acylation reaction and
characterized on the basis of NMR , UV/Vis and elemental analysis. The Cu (II)
complex of this ligand was also synthesized and characterized on the basis of
spectral data (UV/Vis, AAS), molar conductance, magnetic susceptibility, and
elemental analysis. The complex formed is proposed to have a square planar
geometry. The ratio of the ligand to Cu (II) in the complex is
2:1 in which each
dpa unit acts as a bidentate ligand, coordinating through both pyridyl nitrogens
to form a six-membered chelate ring. The Cu (II) complex is a 1:
2 electrolyte
implying that there are two chloride ions with a complex. The chloride content in
the outer sphere of the complex was determined by treatment with silver nitrate
solution and gave a positive result.

▼ Crossover design is a type of longitudinal study with each
subject receiving different treatments in different time periods. It has been used frequently in the pharmaceutical industry and other medical fields to investigate the safety and efficacy of new drugs or new treatments. For crossover studies, the treatment effects from the earlier period may be carried over to the later period, which is called the carry-over effect, the response may naturally change over different periods. How to assess treatment effect with accounting for all these features deserves further investigation. Linear mixed-effects (LME) model has been widely applied to analyze data resulted from longitudinal studies. In this project, we model treatment effects, period effects, and carryover effects using the LME for 2x2 crossover studies, where all subjects are randomly assigned to two sequences, and each
subject is treated subsequently with two treatments, the order of the treatments depends on its sequence. We first investigated the simple 2x2 design, where each
subject has only one response measurement under each treatment. Extensive simulations were carried out to compare the performance between LME and the traditional Grizzle's method. We extend the LME to the general 2x2 crossover studies, where the response under each treatment is taking over different time point. We applied our model to an endothelial progenitor cell (EPC) study, where each patient was exposed to either air (placebo) first then airborne particular matters (PM) or PM first then air. In each exposure condition, the EPC cells were measured right before the exposure (Pre), right after the exposure (Post), and the second day follow-up (FU). The results obtained from LME and traditional methods are compared.

▼ Let k be a positive integer divisible by 4, ℓ > k an odd prime, and f a normalized elliptic cuspidal eigenform of weight k - 1, level 4 and non-trivial character. This thesis provides evidence for the Bloch-Kato conjecture in the following way. Let L(Symm
2 f, s) denote the symmetric square L-function of f and rf the residual (mod ℓ) Galois representation attached to f. We prove that if ordℓ(L
alg(Symm
2 f, k)) > 0 then ℓ divides the size of the Selmer
group H1f&parl0;K,r f&vbm0;GK&parl0;-1&parr0;&parr0; , where K = Q( -1 ). Our method uses an idea of Ribet [Rib76] to introduce an intermediate step showing that ℓ-divisibility of L
alg(Symm
2 f, k) implies the existence of a congruence between modular forms on a
group containing GL
2 as a Levi subgroup of a maximal parabolic. Here we use the
unitary group U(
2,
2) and following Gritsenko [Gri90] we lift f to a CAP modular Hecke eigenform F
f on
U(
2,
2). We then construct a different (non-CAP) Hecke eigenform on
U(
2,
2) with Fourier coefficients congruent to those of F
f. Using this congruence we prove that ℓ divides the size of the Selmer
group.

▼ The Eagle Ford Shale of South Texas is an organic-rich, calcareous mudrock succession which was deposited on the Comanche Platform during the earliest Late Cretaceous. Many academic and industry sponsored Eagle Ford studies over the past 10 years have concentrated their efforts on trying to understand the rock fabrics, facies architecture and heterogeneities present in the succession. However, despite heavy economic and academic interest in the system, few studies focus on trying to understand timing and source of the many bentonite ash beds present in the Eagle Ford; which serve as regional chronostratigraphic markers across South Texas.
One of the primary goals of the study is the determination of
U-Pb age dates in bentonite-rich ash beds from a
group of subsurface cores that penetrate the Eagle Ford Formation in Atascosa County, Texas. Absolute age dates provide a chronostratigraphic framework that is used to estimate the depositional timing of variable Eagle Ford facies, as well as define the timing, duration and magnitude of isotopic events in the region. Secondly, age estimates are utilized to determine and calculate Eagle Ford accumulation rates across South Texas. Absolute age dates are incorporated with lithofacies definitions to better 1) understand the cyclic relationship between dominant Eagle Ford lithologies,
2) identify the controls responsible for the cyclic mode of deposition, and 3) determine the lateral continuity of key lithofacies and lithologic units. Lastly, elemental (XRF) data are utilized to describe the subtle paleoceanographic and sediment source conditions that persisted across the entire Eagle Ford section. These findings are integrated with stable carbon (δ13C) isotopic data, which allow for the accurate definition of Ocean Anoxic Event
2 (OAE
2) in the study area and provide a basis for regional correlation with previous studies. Recent studies have suggested that anoxic conditions experienced within the Western Interior Seaway during this time were asynchronous with the well-documented global OAE
2 event. The present study compares local
U-Pb age dates, isotopic and elemental results with regional studies to better define the onset timing and paleoceanograpic conditions associated with Eagle Ford Shale deposition.

We study the parabolically induced complex representations of the unitary group in 5 variables - U(5)- defined over a non-archimedean local field of characteristic 0. This is Qp or a finite extension of Qp ,where p is a prime number. We speak of a 'p-adic field'.Let F be a p-adic field. Let E : F be a field extension of degree two. Let Gal(E : F ) = {id, σ}. We write σ(x) = overline{x} forall x ∈ E. Let | |p denote the p-adic norm on E. Let E* := E {0} and let E 1 := {x ∈ E | x…

TFPI-2 (Tissue factor pathway inhibitor-2), an inhibitor of serine proteinases, particularly plasmin, can indirectly regulate the activation of MMPs, thus regulating ECM degradation and tumour cell invasion. Our results demonstrated that TFPI-2 silencing was associated with a 2 and 3-fold increase in invasive ability through basement membrane components, for clones NCI-H460 miRNA-1b and -2 respectively, associated with an increased in the relative attachment towards laminin and collagen IV and MMP-1 and MMP–3 overexpression. In direct coculture with fibroblasts, an increase in MMP-3, -7 and -13 transcriptional expression was observed when CCD19-Lu cells were cocultured with both miRNA-1b or -2b clones. In indirect coculture, allowing contact between fibroblasts and NCI-H460 clones conditioned media, an increase in MMP-1, -3 and -7 fibroblastic expression was measured. This study has demonstrated that TFPI-2 can influence ECM remodelling-associated genes and then act as a pericellular proteolysis inhibitor, particularly at the tumour-stroma interface.

Inflammation has been demonstrated to play a central role in chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD). Neutrophil influx leads to a massive release of neutrophil serine proteases elastase (NSPs): elastase (HNE), proteinase 3 (Pr3) and cathepsin (CG) thereby leading to a protease/anti-protease imbalance. Besides the proteolytic damages to the lung extracellular matrix proteins, these proteases stimulate secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines and therefore contribute to the perpetuation of inflammation. In order to target these proteases in COPD, we have examined the capacity of trappin-2 A62L (A62L T2), a genetically modified inhibitor which is able to inhibit all three serine neutrophil proteinases at the same time to protect the alveolar epithelium of the deleterious effects caused by the NSPS. In our study, we showed that T2 A62L significantly inhibits cell detachment and degradation of cell junction proteins (E-cadherin, ß-catenin and ZO-1, zonula occludens-1) of alveolar epithelial cells (A549) induced by each individual NSPS or by activated neutrophils. In addition to their antiproteolytic action T2 and T2 A62L reduced proinflammatory cytokines IL-6 and IL-8 release by A549 cells, previously stimulated by HNE or Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS).

In this study, we have analysed the properties of recombinant polyvalent inhibitors of the three neutrophil serine proteinases (elastase, proteinase 3, cathepsin G), massively released during inflammatory events in various lung diseases. These inhibitors, derived from natural endogeneous inhibitors (elafin, trappin-2, SLPI), interact tightly with both free and membrane-bound neutrophil serine proteinases and possess antimicrobial properties that are independent from their inhibitory capacity. We have also shown that these polyvalent inhibitors can be covalently bound to the extracellular matrix proteins by a transglutaminase and that they retain their inhibitory properties in these conditions. With their various biological properties, these inhibitors are attractive molecules for the development of an aerosol-based therapeutic strategy for the treatment of inflammatory lung diseases.

▼ This PhD dissertation focuses on
group processes that may affect the performance of teams, and especially on conflicts that may arise within a team, diversity in teams and changes in the team’s composition (team turnover). The research was carried out over a four-year period in a health care facility for people with intellectual disabilities. This dissertation introduces a customised method of measuring team turnover. Traditionally, it has only been measured quantitatively; here it is expanded with a qualitative component based on the employees’ competencies. The results of this dissertation show that team turnover can lead to task-related conflicts, which can negatively influence team performance. Teams with experienced employees are the only sort of teams in which turnover does not lead to conflicts and therefore also does not influence performance.

▼ This thesis project focused on the synthesis and
crystal chemical characterization of single crystalline bimetallic
nitride fluorides of general composition BaMNF, with M = Mg, Sr,
& Ca. Single crystalline samples were grown through slow
cooling of metal and metal fluoride mixtures reacted under nitrogen
gas at high temperature. High resolution X-ray diffraction data was
collected and used to elucidate the crystal chemistries of the new
phases, which are described in detail. Compositional analysis using
energy dispersive spectroscopy combined with the FIB (Focused Ion
Beam) milling technique in a scanning electron microscope was
performed on two phases, possibly indicating small amounts of
oxygen contamination in these compounds.Four new
Group II
bimetallic nitride fluoride phases were prepared and characterized
via single crystal X-ray diffraction in this study. A Sr-rich
BaSrNF ordered rocksalt-type phase was prepared showing some
disorder and a non-stoichiometric defect. BaSrNF (Sr-rich) and
BaCaNF (Ba-rich) disordered rocksalt-type compounds were prepared.
A Ba-rich BaCaNF rhombohedral phase was also prepared and
characterized, and crystal chemical factors governing the choice of
rhombohedral vs. the ordered rocksalt-type cubic structure are
discussed. Attempts to prepare BaMgNF compounds were unsuccessful.
Finally, previous studies were revisited on Sr2NF to further
elucidate the crystal chemistry of this phase as a baseline for
BaSrNF studies. No
Group II bimetallic inorganic nitride fluoride
compounds have been previously reported in the literature. Such
bimetallic compounds could offer the ability to tune band-gaps and
thus optical and electronic properties relative to single metal
M2NF compounds.

▼ A series of heavy alkaline earth complexes containing TpR2-based ligands has been synthesized, structurally characterized, and their properties were investigated. Salt metathesis routes involving MI2 (M = Ca, Sr, Ba) with either KTpEt2 or KTpnPr2 afforded MTpEt22 or MTpnPr22 in good to moderate yields. All of these complexes are volatile and exceptionally thermally stable, and have acceptable properties for use as
group 2 atomic layer deposition (ALD) precursors. In addition, a series of
group 2 complexes containing BpR2-based ligand systems were synthesized. Treatment of MI2 (M = Ca, Sr, Ba) with two equivalents of TlBptBu2, KBp, and KBpiPr2 in tetrahydrofuran at ambient temperature afforded MBptBu22(THF)n, MBp2(THF)n, and MBpiPr22(THF)
2, respectively. In the MBptBu2 complexes, the BptBu2 ligands undergo deformation in order to avoid intraligand and interligand tert-butyl
group steric repulsions. Some of the BptBu2 complexes have enough volatility and thermal stability to be used as ALD or CVD precursors, however, the Bp and BpiPr2 complexes decompose prior to volatilization. The thermolysis of three equivalents of CaBp2(THF)
2 at 190-200 °C/0.05 Torr afforded one equivalent of CaTp2 and two equivalents of TpCaBH4 in good yields. Treatment of TpCaBH4 with methanol and ethanol, followed by the appropriate work up procedure, led to the isolation of [(TpCa(MeOH)
2)
2(μ-B(OMe)4)][B(OMe)4] and [(TpCaB(OEt)3O)3B]·EtOH, respectively. The ALD film growth of MB2O4 (M = Ca, Sr, Ba) has been demonstrated using CaTp2, SrTp2, or BaTpEt22 and water. For the ALD growth of BaB2O4, an ALD window was observed from 250-375 °C with a growth rate of 0.23 Å/cycle. In the ALD growth of CaB2O4 and SrB2O4, an ALD window was observed from 300-375 °C, respectively, with a consistent growth rate of approximately 0.36 and 0.47 Å/cycle, respectively. In the temperature versus growth rate plots for CaTp2, SrTp2, and BaTpEt2, precursor saturation occurred at ≥ 3.0, ≥ 3.0, and ≥ 1.0 s, respectively. Elastic recoil detection analysis (ERDA) of representative samples within the ALD windows indicated that the films were consistent with the composition of MB2O4, which demonstrates that TpR2-based ligands are able to act as a single source precursor for metal and boron, and confer a precise
2:1 boron/metal ratio.

▼ In this thesis we study symmetric structures in Hilbert spaces known as symmetric
informationally complete positive operator-valued measures (SIC-POVMs), mutually unbiased bases (MUBs), and MUB-balanced states. Our tools include symmetries such
as the Weyl-Heisenberg (WH) group symmetry, Clifford unitaries, Zauner symmetry, and
Galois-unitaries (g-unitaries). In the study of SIC-POVMs, we found their geometric
significance as the ``most orthogonal'' bases on the cone of non-negative operators. While investigating SICs, we discovered a linear dependency property of the orbit of an arbitrary vector with the Zauner symmetry under the WH group. In dimension d = 3, the linear dependency structures arising from certain special SIC states are identified with the Hesse configuration known from the study of elliptic curves in mathematics. We provide an analytical explanation for linear dependencies in every dimension, and a numerical analysis based on exhaustive numerical searches in dimensions d = 4 to 9. We also study the relations among normal vectors of the hyperplanes spanned by the linearly dependent sets, and found 2-dimensional SICs embedded in the Hilbert space of dimension d = 6, and 3-dimensional SICs for d = 9. A full explanation is given for the case d = 6. Another study in the thesis focuses on the roles of g-unitaries in the theory of mutually unbiased bases. G-unitaries are, in general, non-linear operators defined to generalize the notion of anti-unitaries. Due to Wigner's theorem, their action has to be restricted to a smaller region of the Hilbert space, which consists of vectors whose components belong to a specific number field. G-unitaries are relevant to MUBs when this number field is the cyclotomic field. In this case, we found that g-unitaries simply permuted the bases in the standard set of MUBs in odd prime-power dimensions. With their action further restricted only to MUB vectors, g-unitaries can be represented by rotations in the Bloch space, just as ordinary unitary operators can. We identify g-unitaries that cycle through all d + 1 bases in prime power dimensions d = p^n where n is odd (the problem in even prime power dimensions has been solved using ordinary unitaries). Each of these MUB-cycling g-unitaries always leaves one state in the Hilbert space invariant. We provide a method for calculating these eigenvectors. Furthermore, we prove that when d = 3 mod 4, they are MUB-balanced states in the sense of Wootters & Sussman and Amburg et al.

▼ The purpose of this research is to evaluate a group of psychoeducation program implemented in type 2 diabetic patients. Sixty patients with type 2 diabetes who were under observation in the outpatient Diabetes Center of Nikaia’s General Hospital "St. Panteleimon", divided into three separate groups, the Intervention Group 1, Intervention Group 2 and Control Group and did not differ in age, weight, BMI, duration of type 2 diabetes, the treatment received and HbA1c before intervention. The psychometric instruments which were given to the participants were as follows: a Demographics Questionnaire, the Audit of Diabetes Dependent Quality of Life Questionnaire – ADDQoL-19 (Bradley, 1996), the Diabetes Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire-Status and Change Versions – DTSQs.) (Bradley, 1994), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale – HADS) (Zigmond & Snaith, 1983), the Revised Illness Perception Questionnaire-Diabetes) (Moss-Morris et al., 2002), the Barriers to Diabetes Self-Care Scale (Glasgow, 1994) and the Diabetes Family Behavior Checklist-DFBC (Schafer, McCaul & Glasgow, 1986). Finally, the biochemical indicator of HbA1c was calculated. The Intervention Group 1 (N=20) followed a structured program of psycho-education and psychotherapy over 15 weekly meetings lasting three hours, the Intervention Group 2 (N=20) followed a program of psycho-educational five weekly meetings lasting three hours, while the Control group (N=20) received the standard medical examination and did not follow any psychological intervention. Patients in all three groups had a follow up meeting 3 months after completion of the intervention. According to the results of this research it seemed that the group psychological intervention (the psycho-education and psychotherapy program or just psycho-education) had a positive effect on glycemic control (HbA1c) in people with type 2 diabetes, while there was a positive effect on number of important psychosocial variables (Quality of life, Treatment satisfaction, Anxiety, Evolution of the disease acute/chronic, Barriers to nutrition care, Barriers to taking medications, Consistency of sickness and Emotional representations), while this positive effect was maintained after the intervention in several metabolic and psychosocial parameters. It should be noted here that Family Relationships did not appear to be affected by the intervention applied in diabetic patients.

▼ In this thesis, we prove that local genericity implies globally genericity for the quasi-split unitary group U3 for a quadratic extension of number fields E/F. We follow [Fli1992] and [GJR2001] closely, using the relative trace formula approach. Our main result is the existence of smooth transfer for the relative trace formulae in [GJR2001], which is circumvented there. The basic idea is to compute the Mellin transform of Shalika germ functions and show that they are equal in the unitary case and the general linear case.
