▼ This research explores the uncanny threshold in painting. The uncanny threshold is a concept derived from my personal experience of contemporary Australian architecture in the form of Lovett Bay House, the private home of architects Richard Leplastrier and Karen Lambert in New South Wales. This research argues that Lovett Bay House challenges Malpas’s view (2008) that the threshold is something that needs to be crossed, as a zone of transition, in order to be a threshold. At Lovett Bay House, the absence of a conventional door, and the effective removal of the front wall, shifts the concept of the threshold as space of transition (from inside to outside or vice versa) to the threshold as a zone of habitation – a space in which one dwells. Within the zone of habitation it is argued that everyday experiences are made extraordinary through the simultaneous and overlapping space of the extended entranceway; the inside and outside experienced as one, and, what I have termed, the uncanny threshold. It is the aim of this research to explore the physical entity and felt experience of the uncanny threshold through the pictorial space of painting. In the first instance, a genealogy of the threshold is developed, drawing on the sublime as a device in painting. Key works by Caspar David Friedrich, James Abbott McNeill Whistler and J.M.W. Turner have been selected, each demonstrating a particular approach to the sublime and, hence, the threshold in painting. In the contemporary setting, works by Peter Doig, Karin Mamma Andersson and Jess MacNeil have been selected to explore the uncanny threshold in painting. The key devices relevant to this research are described as a “twofold temporal movement” (Grenier 2007, p. 107-108) in the case of Doig; twofold spatial movement in the case of Andersson and twofold spatiotemporal movement in the case of MacNeil. Each of these works demonstrates an approach to the threshold, and provides a means through which I am able to develop and convey my own exploration of the threshold as a spatio-temporal threshold that houses the two in one. This research draws upon three key aspects of the Modernist movement: a framework of tradition, material experimentation and a continual experimental approach. The final methodology develops a series of incidents that work to emulate the overlapping and simultaneous concurrence of space found in the reveal zone of the threshold at Lovett Bay House. The architectural reveal, a structural component concealed within the conventional threshold, becomes apparent when one is ‘tripped up’ in crossing the threshold. At Lovett bay House, due to the architectural arrangement of the threshold, the reveal is continuously present. The incidents as methodological device produce a series of images that allow one to visually contemplate the threshold as a zone of habitation in painting; images that are familiar, yet curiously strange. ▼ The Gothic novel becomes a vogue in the mid-eighteenth century, and its conventions still influence works today that try to fully present horror. The Gothic novel is distinct in its mood, style, and settings. It has established a tradition of horror fiction in which sexuality, violence, death, and immorality are interwoven. These themes work with supernatural power and spectral settings that transmits a deathly atmosphere. Put in such a context, characters cannot but feel the horror produced by those settings and the medieval style; henceforth, they are always situated in the mood of darkness which causes the feelings of sublime. These themes, settings, and style help the Gothic novel to form its own Gothic conventions which still influence the production of horror fiction. The first chapter analyzes how the sublime and uncanny effects produced by the conventions of the Gothic work against the morality of the time. Matthew Lewis manipulates the spectral techniques brought by the sublime and uncanny to pierce through the regulation of morality. The sublime effects transform horror experienced in reading into pleasure and the spectrality in supernatural descriptions makes the morality seem less apparent. The supernatural phenomena divert the reader from attention to issues of morality. The second chapter is to investigate how a set of standards concerning sexuality becomes binding and imperative to men and women in The Monk. In Lewisâs novel, womanhood is the incarnation of the sublime, its sublimity consisting of a force that compels male and female characters to obey regulations concerning sexuality. Thus, from the sublimity of womanhood, a sexual ideological develops in the novel, Staying pure and sacred in body and soul is not only binding to woman but also to man. The thirst for power on the part of the novelâs villains is an attempt to violate and destroy the power of womanhood; the novelâs heroes are trying to embody that power. The third and final chapter is to investigate how the gendered bodies determined the gendered identities with the assistance of Judith Butlerâs theory of the gendered matrix, which defines gender types and forms gender identity. Following their gendered identity, each character is citing the corresponding ideological sexual strand. Their activities actually âciteâ the gendered concept and perform the gender identity through their bodies. Even though the stereotyped characters seem flat, there is still a gray area in the novel where clear-cut genderâs performativity is improbable. Thus, on occasion, Lewis undercuts the gender constructions that he seems to endorse, making the Gothic and all the effects it produces a smoke screen behind which he can occasionally go against the grain of the (sexual) morality of his time. This double-layer quality of The Monkâs morality makes reading that novel an act of piercing through artistic forms and wondering if what lies underneath them represents indeed the novelâs core meaning. ▼ In this dissertation I examine uncanny characters in Neil Gaiman’s novels Coraline (2002) and The Graveyard Book (2008). I explore what constitutes uncanny characters in his narratives and the consequent effects these characters have on protagonists’ identities: their self-awareness and acknowledgement of alterity. Both novels have been classified under an experimental genre, Children’s Gothic, known for negotiating identity, making use of elements of horror and using allegorical versions of contemporary cultural debates (Jackson 2017). While critics like Richard Gooding (2008) and David Rudd (2008) have explored the uncanny in Coraline for its adolescent maturation and identity formation, dependent on traditional psychoanalytic paradigms of separating the child from the mother figure, I rely on contemporary re-readings of Sigmund Freud’s “uncanny” (1919) in conjunction with Carl Jung’s notion of “the shadow” to reveal how protagonists in Gaiman’s two novels gain self-awareness and an acceptance of ‘the other’. Through an analysis of the ghost-witch-child, Liza Hempstock in The Graveyard Book, and the beldam or Other Mother in Coraline, I reveal how their uncanniness (ambivalence, uncertainty and unhomeliness) blurs binarist notions of good/evil as well as hegemonies of gender, race and religion. As a ghost from the Elizabethan era, Liza reveals the presence of the past and forms of persecution and violence that are transhistorical (witch-hunts, child oppression and Antisemitism). Not dissimilar to Liza, I argue that the Other Mother’s doubling and ambivalence (good/evil, mothering/malign, human/monster) provides a powerful, transgressive alternative to limiting patriarchal definitions of the feminine. Both the Other Mother and Liza thus challenge oppressive forms of thinking and become catalysts for positive change in the protagonists’ sense of self. An understanding of how the uncanny works will assist readers in coming-to-grips with social anxieties involved in living in a multiple society, in which one is constantly confronted by alterity. Gaiman’s novels teach lessons in transforming the fear of the other into a moment of possibility. For this reason, I argue that Gaiman’s novels are relevant to the South African milieu, and share similarities with certain South African Children’s (or Young Adult) Gothic novels, such as Charlie Human’s Apocalypse Now Now (2013). Through a comparison of uncanny characters in Human’s and Gaiman’s novels, I argue for a space for Children’s Gothic in the South African literary landscape. Through uncanny characters, Gothic has the unique capacity to co-opt young readers into the process of disrupting borders, renegotiating identities and bringing about individual and cultural transformation. ▼ It was for the longest time that the mother in Freud troubled me. Unlike some feminist psychoanalysts such as Julia Kristeva who argue that the mother/maternity in Freud is finally to be thought of as a ‘massive nothing’ (Kristeva, 1987: 255), I knew that the mother was there/da, but it was how she was there that concerned me and forms the basis of this thesis. Freud shows us the mother in his work when he argues that the child’s first love object in its truest sense is the mother, ‘and all of his sexual instincts with their demand for satisfaction have been united upon this object’ (SE 18: 111). I highlight the ‘his’ because Freud’s focus on this first love object is primarily male. And although Freud does not differentiate between the little girl and little boy at this early stage, thereafter the girls relationship to the mother, argues Freud, ends in ‘hate’. She cannot be forgiven for not giving the little girl a penis. But the mother as a primordial ‘object’ not only becomes lost (and thereafter we are all involved in a search to ‘refind ‘it’/‘her’) but she seems also to be, uniformly Mater/matter to be overlooked. To use a rather explosive analogy, it is as if the mother and Freud are together yet separated in a double-barreled shotgun, with the misfiring of one barrel obscuring (obliterating) the other. Freud in fact used a similar analogy in an explanation for anxiety. Here the rifle is pointed at the ‘wild beast’ a description that Freud uses to describe the unruly forces of the libido in the unconscious. A fitting parallel then because the mother has a relation to anxiety and the unconscious that might best be described as central. Thus Freud writes and the mother is ‘shaded’. Again an apt analogy one that Freud himself uses to describe the Odyssean like shades that invade the unconscious as ghosts and taste blood. If the mother is indeed the dark-continent, a simile for the unconscious, or at least her sexuality, which after all is what is important in Freud’s Oedipal theory, then the question might be asked, ‘is the mother a ghost that haunts our living lives’? Of course a living mother is not a ghost, but then a literal explanation neglects the repression that accompanies the developing ego, an ego no less that is subject to childhood amnesia during the middle years of childhood. The Prologue introduces us to Freud the man. It seemed to me at the onset of this thesis that the mother is both universalised but also personalised. If Freud did not mourn his mother, why might this be so? And how is Freud himself mourned, remembered, outside his work? Chapter One is an introduction to Freud’s work, asking where the mother might be, and even why she may or may not be recognised in areas that seem peculiar to a space that mothers might occupy. Chapter Two looks at feminist psychoanalysts and asks how they engage with both Freud the man, and Freudian psychoanalysis and thereafter the later schools of psychoanalysis. ▼ The childhood home and its associated artefacts can have a seminal affect on life experience and memory. Those inanimate domestic objects that accompany us through childhood accrue value and emotional investment. They mark the passage of time and place, and contribute to the creation of a personal narrative. These material souvenirs of a life journey can evoke seemingly contrary emotions, where recalled memory and present day reflections combine to provoke nostalgia and sensations related to the phenomenon of ‘the uncanny’.This research was initiated to analyse the emotional responses evoked by a collection of souvenirs retrieved from the suburban Australian home of my childhood. By reflecting upon my relationship to these objects I began to comprehend how the accoutrements of everyday life contribute to a complex personal dialogue between past and present and between reality and fantasy. A critical discussion of this experience in relation to the existing literature in the field of cultural studies is charted through an analysis of selected visual artists and provides a background for the current studio research. The study provides a deeper understanding of the vital role domestic souvenirs can play in mediating loss and change throughout a life. The emerging dialogue also referencing the psychological and philosophical becomes a contextual framework for the development and further discussion of my own arts practice.This document explores theoretical and subjective conditions of the domestic souvenir, their evocations in the material culture of the home, and how retrospectively they affect our self- image and perspective on life. The investigation is supported by a responsive body of work created in the studio the results of which are reproduced in this document, and will be exhibited in an installation composed of ceramic sculptures, titled Home Altar, at Gallerysmith, Melbourne, 2010. ▼ Tutkimuksessani Elävien kuolleiden outo laakso – kummastuttavan käsite ja elävien kuolleiden nykyrepresentaatiot käsittelen fiktion mahdollisuuksia lähestyä sanallistamista pakenevia ilmiöitä sekä sitä, mitä elävät kuolleet kertovat kulttuuristamme ja siinä ilmenevistä häiriötiloista. Keskeisenä käsitteenä tutkimuksessani käytän Fredin unheimlich-käsitteeseen pohjautuvaa kummastuttavaa, joka viittaa johonkin aiemmin tuttuun mutta vieraaksi muuttuneeseen – epämääräiseen oudon tunteeseen, siihen että jotakin, jonka kuuluisi olla salattua on päässyt pintaan ja paljastunut. Järjestäytynyt homogeeninen yhteiskunta pyrkii kattamaan nimeämisen ja haltuunottamisen kautta mahdollisimman suuren määrän asioita tuottavan ja toimivan yhteisön ylläpitämiseksi, mutta kaikki asiat eivät jäsenny eikä kaikkia kokemuksia ole mahdollista sanallistaa. Tällaista jäsennettyyn arkeen aukeavaa kauhua ja hämmennystä herättävää halkeamaa hahmotan kummastuttavan sisarkäsitteiden kautta: Julia Kristevan abjekti, Jaques Lacanin reaalinen, Georges Bataillen heterogeeninen sekä Mark Fisherin aavemainen ja outo. Yhteiskunnan kannalta äärimmäinen häiriötekijä on kuolema, joka lopullisesti tuntemattomana ja tavoittamattomana sekä ahdistaa kuolemastaan tietoisia yksilöitä että toisaalta myös antaa merkityksen elämälle ja mahdollistaa elämän rajallisuuden yhdistämien yksilöiden muodostamat yhteisöt. Yhteisön kannalta tuntematon toinen on aina uhka ja se, miten tähän uhkaan suhtaudutaan määrittää yhteisöä. Elämä ja kuolema ovat absoluuttiset kategoriat, ja elävä kuollut siten käsittämätön par excellence. Tutkimuksessani nostan nykyfiktiosta esiin kaksi esimerkkiä, jossa elävien kuolleiden representaatiot poikkeavat klassisesta zombiekauhusta ja jossa keskiöön nousee yhteisön suhtautuminen kuolleista palanneisiin. Televisiosarja Kuolleista palanneet ja Kuinka kuolleita käsitellään –kirja esittävät elävät kuolleet vähintään lähes inhimillisinä, toisinaan myös puhuvina olentoina, jotka pakottavat kohtaamaan sekä itsensä yksilöinä että kuoleman kaikkia koskettavana yhteisenä tapahtumana. Teokset tuovat näkyville niitä mekanismeja, joita yhteisöt ovat läpi historian käyttäneet vieraan, toisen ja hallitsemattoman uhatessa. Käsittelemällä arkisia hallintaan liittyviä rakenteita teokset tuovat niitä esiin ja siten myös mahdollistavat niiden purkamisen. Toisaalta teoksissa käsitellään myös rakkautta ja sen tarjoamia mahdollisuuksia ja velvollisuuksia ja sitä kautta velvollisuutta, joka liittyy ihmisenä olemiseen – kuka on oikeutettu tekemään päätöksiä muiden kohtalosta? Elävät kuolleet nostavat esiin isoja kysymyksiä menneisyydestä ja nykyhetkestä. Tutkimuksessani tulen siihen tulokseen, että uudenlaiset palanneet siirtävät painopisteen yksilöstä ja yksilön selviytymisestä yhteisöön. Osittain elävänä palanneet edustavat kategoriaa, jota ei ole olemassa ja jonka suhteen ei ole valmiita toimintamalleja. Ne pakottavat artikuloimaan olemassaoloon ja sen päättymiseen liittyviä seikkoja, mutta ne eivät edelleenkään pysty paljastamaan kuolemaan liittyviä…

O objeto de estudo desta dissertação é o suporte midiático do cinema materializado em ficção fílmica, cuja construção é entendida como uma função comunicativa capaz de gerar efeitos de sentido. De forma mais específica refere-se à identificação dos modos utilizados no cinema para elaborar seqüências fílmicas com capacidades sugestivas para produzir o efeito do medo. Neste contexto surgiu o problema da pesquisa, pois qualquer espectador, de antemão, sabe estar diante de uma ficção, entretanto, porque os procedimentos deliberados da construção fílmica são capazes de gerar o efeito do medo? Assim sendo, foi desenvolvido o argumento de que os procedimentos cinematográficos embutidos em determinados padrões de linguagem, ao tangenciarem o estranho familiar esbarram nas determinações do inconsciente do espectador, provocando o efeito do medo. Para embasar esta argumentação foram utilizadas as referências do Das Unheimlich de Freud e a abordagem semiótica de Peirce, em que o medo pôde ser avaliado como um signo-interpretante dentro de uma ordenação lógica: o filme/cinema (signo) constrói o estranho/ Das Unheimliche (objeto) para produzir o efeito geral do medo ao qual os espectadores devem chegar (interpretante). O corpus da pesquisa incluiu os seguintes filmes: Psicose, 1960 Diretor: Alfred Hitchcock, O Iluminado, 1980 - Diretor: Stanley Kubrick, e, Os Outros, 2001 Diretor: Alejandro Amenábar, cujo critério de escolha foi o indiscutível reconhecimento de público e crítica no tocante aos efeitos de tensão, suspense, terror e medo dos filmes. Além de pretender lançar novas luzes interpretativas sobre os filmes selecionados, a pesquisa visou contribuir, por meio da semiótica e da psicanálise, para a ampliação do debate sobre um dos eixos epistemológicos fundamentais do campo científico da comunicação: a linguagem

The study object of this thesis is the media support of cinema embodied in fiction film, whose construction is understood as a communicative function capable of generating meaningful effects. It more specifically refers to the identification of the forms used in film to produce sequences with the suggestive capacities to produce the effect of fear. In this context, emerged the research problem, as viewers already know it to be fiction. But why are the deliberate procedures in film construction able to generate the effect of fear? Therefore, the argument was developed that cinematographic procedures inserted certain language patterns, to touch on the uncanny collisions in the determinations of the unconsciousness of the viewer, causing the effect of fear. To support this argument, references to Das Unheimlich Freud s and Peirce s semiotic approach were used, in which fear could be evaluated as an interpretative sign in a logical order: the movie / cinema (sign) builds the stranger / Das Unheimliche (object) to produce the overall effect of fear on which the spectators must arrive (interpretant).
