▼ This research is a field study analyzing conflict attitudes as possible triggers for the conflicts among the unaccompanied refugee children in the HBV houses in the Småland County, Sweden. In order to do so, this study focuses specifically on the causes of the conflicts among the children and to seek a deeper understanding on how these conflict attitudes were acted upon and became the potential triggers for the conflicts. The role of the staff working in these houses and their knowledge of the children's backgrounds and their views regarding the causes of the violence between the children are also scrutinized. Factors that are examined include the children's backgrounds, entrenched historical ethnic and religious violence in their home country that the children might have inherited their conflict attitudes as the result and still carry with into the new environment, Sweden. Interviews were conducted with both the children and the concerning staff in a number of houses in different cities in the Småland county. Triangulation of sources was also used to discuss the history of conflict regarding the children's country and the required data for both the theoretical as well as methodological approaches. The study analyzed the results using Johan Galtung's conflict triangle and its components: behavior, attitudes and contradiction focusing specifically on conflict attitudes in relation to the other two components of the triangle. This theoretical approach is valuable in breaking down the issue in order to get a deeper understanding on different angles. Through interviews with both the unaccompanied children and the concerning staff, this study found that the children do have conflict attitudes and constructed conflict behavior as the result of their previous life in a conflict environment, though there are some other factors that have also played a role and deteriorated the violence between them. The staff’s level of awareness regarding the children's backgrounds, cultural values and sensitivities are considerably inefficient due to their different education majors and lack of proper work experiences with the children coming from the war-torn countries. In some of the conflicts the staff's poor understanding of the children's ethnic and religious violence they inherited from their country have further triggered the conflict among the children. Therefore, there is a need for further in-depth research in future to increase the level of awareness of the Swedish Migration Board, Social Welfare Board, Municipalities and the HBV houses regarding the ethnical and religious violence that the children experienced in their home country.

▼ This thesis is a qualitative case study that explores the experiences of unaccompanied Afghan asylum seeking minors in Greece – a largely neglected area empirically, in migration-related social science research – despite the fact that migration has been an issue of mounting concern recently. The study sets out to bridge this gap hence, to provide insights of the paths of young people as individuals in their own right, and of the dynamics and processes of their forced migrations. The research contributes to contemporary debates about migration and childhood. The thesis takes a broader approach that highlights the connections across borders and covers the multiple facets of unaccompanied minors’ experiences and feelings; pre-exile, during journeys, and on arrival in Greece. The future plans and motivations of the young respondents are also discussed. Information in relation to young respondent’s experiences, emotions and thoughts was collected in a series of in-depth interviews, focus groups and participatory activities. Data was also gathered by professionals and public figures with the aim to identify how these young people are treated and perceived inside and outside of the reception centres in Greece. The data indicates that these young respondents are deeply and negatively affected by experiences of loss, separation, discrimination, abuse, and long-lasting hardships to be found throughout their histories of movement. Their accounts are renegotiated tales where notions of belonging and identity are shaped along the way, and the boundaries drawn around childhood and adulthood are often fragile and fluid. The events of young people’s movements are reported as having been poignant, rendering them in a continuous, transitional state of existence. This stage ‘in between’, it is argued to be intricately entangled with the prolonged political insecurity which in some instances, extents to the condition of statelessness. The analysis of young respondents’ experiences revealed an overt gap between entitlements which are theoretically attributed to unaccompanied minors, regarding their social, political and legal rights – irrespective of their legal status – and pragmatic barriers to be found on the ground; on the streets, at borders, in detention, in police stations, and in reception centres, these young people are imperilled to the process of dehumanization. This process is understood to be a product of social and political violence implicated in local and transnational contexts. A combination of structural factors and practices has been found to be compounded by inhuman actions such as; the commodification process, the classification process, poverty, stigmatization, institutional racism and the ambiguity of political status. The findings further indicated that young respondents had mixed and distinct feelings of their experiences and responded to the process of dehumanization in very different ways; some developed robust resilient mechanisms along the way and formed important social networks for their survival and others…

I denna studie uppmärksammas sju stycken professionella vuxna som arbetar med ensamkommande ungdomar vid två olika HVB-hem. Syftet är att belysa hur personalen kan resonera kring och konstruera ungdomarnas kön, religion, etnicitet, kultur och utanförskap i sina dagliga arbeten. Med hjälp av observationer formulerades en semistrukturerad intervjuguide varefter intervjuer med personal utfördes. Det insamlade intervjumaterialet analyserades utifrån ett intersektionellt perspektiv samt med hjälp av teorierna stigma, etnicitet, kultur och genus. Resultatet av undersökningen visar på hur dessa vuxnas ansvar går bortom deras arbetsroll samt hur de får fylla i skorna för ett helt släktträd och inte bara vara auktoritetsfigurer. Analysen påvisar att personalen har tydliga föreställningar om kön och maktstrukturen mellan könen samt hur de kategoriserar ungdomarna i olika grupper beroende på ungdomens kön. Studien visar även hur personalen drar tydliga gränser mellan olika folkgrupper där samhälleliga beteenden, kultur, religion, språk, utseende och tankesätt sammanvävs med individens etniska bakgrund, vilket kan ha en oavsiktligt stigmatiserande effekt på ungdomarna.

This study addresses seven professional adults working with unaccompanied minors living at two different HVB homes. The purpose is to demonstrate how the staff in their daily work at these homes reason about and construct the minors’ gender, religion, ethnicity, culture, and exclusion. Using participant and partial-participant observation, a semi-structured interview guide was formulated, followed by conducting interviews of the staff. The interview data was analyzed with an intersectional perspective and with the theories stigma, ethnicity, culture, and gender. The results show that the responsibilities of the staff are beyond their job description, and that these adults must fill the shoes of an entire family tree and not only serve as authorities. The analysis reveals that the staff has clear ideas on gender and the power structure between the sexes, and also how they categorize the minors into different groups based on gender. The study also shows that the staff makes clear distinctions between communities in which social behavior, culture, religion, language, appearance, and way of thinking are tied together with the individual's ethnic background, potentially leading to an unintentional stigmatizing effect on the minors.

Abstrakt: Antalet ensamkommande barn som anländer till Sverige har ökat kraftigt de senaste åren. Detta gör att man vid mottagandet av dessa barn måste se till att deras behov efterlevs, även på lång sikt. Det ställs i synnerhet krav på de boenden där de flesta av barnen hamnar efter att de får permanent uppehållstillstånd. I denna studie efterfrågas hur personalen arbetar på dessa boenden, och vilka metoder som används. I studien har gruppintervjuer samt enkäter använts. Resultatet visar på att specifika metoder generellt anses som mycket användbara, men inte anses som något av det viktigaste i arbetet. Ospecifika metoder används betydligt mer, och bygger mycket på anpassning till olika situationer och klienter. Den viktigaste och mest användbara resursen i arbetet anses vara att ha en relation som bygger på förtroende och tillit, och att skapa trygghet. Synen på varför relationen är viktig är uppdelad, ofta mellan boendena, i praktiskt användbar och för den ensamkommande barnen emotionellt positiv. De som ser relationen som emotionellt positiv tenderar till att lägga större vikt vid relationsskapande.

The number of unaccompanied refugee minors arriving in Sweden has risen significantly in recent years. This calls for a reception in which their, (also long term) needs are covered. In particular, this accentuates the responsibility of the group-homes where most of these children and youth are placed after their asylum claims are accepted. In this study attention is focused on how the staff in these group-homes work, gaining information on current methods being used in the group homes, and exploring how effective and sufficient these methods are considered to be. The study involves a mixed-methods design, including both interviews and survey methods. The results show that specific group-home methods in general are perceived as very useful, but not the most important aspect in their work. Unspecific methods are used significantly more frequently, and are based in the ability to adapt to different situations and clients. The most important and useful resource in this work is considered to be having a relationship built on confidence and trust with the children, and to create a place of safety for the children. The perceptions of why the relationship is important are varied, often between the group-homes. Some emphasize practical areas, other emphasize emotional and developmental areas. Those who view the relationship as emotionally positive tend to further emphasize the importance of building relationships.

▼ The number of unaccompanied minors arriving to Sweden has increased steadily over the latter years, with an exceptional growth in 2015. Although the minors arrive separated from parents or other family members it is recognized that family bonds often still exist. In keeping with international principles of family unity, Swedish law ensures the right to apply for family reunification. The aim of my study has been to explore and analyse the process of family reunification based on the perspectives of my informants. This has been done to identify both obstacles and potential of current practice, which may ultimately provide a better framework for developing this area of work. The research questions have focused on three main aspects; the influence family reunification may have for the youths’ situation, how current practice is experienced and what kind of support professionals provide for the youths. The theoretical framework of my study focuses on different family patterns, social capital and relational social work. The empirical data was collected through a total of 10 semi structured interviews, including 8 professionals and 2 youths. Thematic analysis was used for the interpretation of the collected data. The findings of my study indicates that family reunification leads to an increased responsibility on the youths. In addition, the amount of individualized support for the youth is reduced. This suggests that family reunification involves a transition of care responsibility that may not take into account the specific situation the family is in. Their position as newly arrived immigrants involves adapting to a different society system. While existing literature emphasizes the importance of stable transitions when leaving public care, this demonstrates an obstacle for current practice. Another finding was that professionals found it difficult to prepare the youths for upcoming challenges due to their strong focus and desire of getting their family to Sweden. This may further challenge the professionals’ ability of ensuring a stable transition and positive reunification process. While the professionals reflected upon their own practice, I could identify certain elements that was expressed repeatedly by all informants. This led me to distinguish three typical characteristics of their roles; insufficient role, restrictive role and exceeding role. The first mainly illustrated how the professionals had to relate to external factors they had little influence on. The second characteristic pointed out how they themselves restricted their involvement as a way to maintain the focus of their assigned responsibility. The last role characteristic showed how the professionals at times exceeded their ‘professional’ responsibility in order to provide sufficient support for the youths. The latter appeared to be dependent on the quality of relationship they had established with the youth. De senaste åren har antalet människor som tvingats på flykt från sina hemländer ökat markant med cirka 17 miljoner jämfört med 2011. Ett antal av dessa flyktingar är barn under 18 år som skiljts från sina föräldrar och som sökt sig till Sverige i hopp om att få en tryggare tillvaro samt ett bättre liv. Sveriges kommuner har ansvaret för det praktiska mottagandet och socialnämnden har det yttersta ansvaret för de ungas hälsa, vilket innebär att personal runt de ensamkommande unga måste kunna identifiera om de unga far illa. Tidigare forskning har uppmärksammat att ensamkommande unga utestängs och utsätts för rasistiska fördomar samt bristande tolerans för deras kultur och språk. Tidigare forskningsstudier har dock gett en delad bild av hur ensamkommande unga reagerar när de möts med diskriminering och vardagsrasism och därför har denna studies syfte varit att undersöka de ensamkommande ungas upplevelser och reaktioner i sådana situationer. Studien har haft en kvalitativ forskningsstrategi och induktivt angreppssätt. Åtta ensamkommande unga, mellan 17 till 18 år, deltog i studien och som datainsamlingsmetod användes semistrukturerade intervjuer. De två övergripande teman som genererades var de ungas tankar om det svenska samhället och de ungas tankar om hur omgivningen bemöter dem. Vid analysen användes hermeneutisk meningstolkning och teorier om rasifiering och vardagsrasism. Slutsatserna från studien var att ensamkommande unga bemöts med uteslutslutning och samhälleliga negativa föreställningar om deras kultur och identitet samt att de i viss mån utsätts för olika former av rasistiskt motstånd. Studien visar även att de ensamkommande unga har reagerat med känslor av frustration, besvikelse, maktlöshet, utanförskap och rädslor i kontakt med svenskar.

The number of people forced to be refugees have increased tremendously in the last few years. Some of these refugees are minors under the age of 18 who are separated from their parents and families and come to Sweden in the hope of getting safer and better life. Sweden has municipalities and social welfare boards which are responsible for the reception of the minors and the minors’ health respectively. For these units to give proper help to the unaccompanied minors, they must be able to identify if the minors are exposed to bad situations. Previous researches have shown that unaccompanied children are exposed to discrimination and racial stereotyping in addition to less tolerance to their culture and language. These researches, however, have different picture of how the unaccompanied minors react when they face discrimination and daily-racism. Therefore, this research studied unaccompanied children with the purpose of finding out their experience and reaction related to discrimination. The study has followed a qualitative research strategy with inductive approach. Under år 2015 sökte 162 877 personer asyl i Sverige. Större delen av de asylsökande kom från det krigshärjade Syrien, det var 51 338 asylsökande (Migrationsverket, 2016). Syftet med uppsatsen var att undersöka socialsekreterares upplevelse av den psykosociala arbetsmiljön, samt upplevd kompetens i arbetet, på en kommunal enhet för ensamkommande barn till följd av ökad arbetsbelastning som en konsekvens av flyktingkrisen. Syftet besvarades genom följande frågeställningar: Hur upplever socialsekreterare sin psykosociala arbetsmiljö? Hur upplevs kompetensen i det dagliga arbetet hos berörda socialsekreterare? Metoden för studien var kvalitativ. Fem semistrukturerade intervjuer utfördes med socialsekreterare på en kommunal enhet för ensamkommande barn. Resultatet visade att socialsekreterarna upplever att deras psykosociala arbetsmiljö är stressfylld till följd av hög arbetsbelastning som uppkommit till följd av flyktingkrisen. Resultatet visade också att socialsekreterarnas upplevda kompetens i arbete var varierande, det som var gemensamt var att samtliga upplevde att de utökar sin kompetens i arbetet och mötet med de ensamkommande barnen.

In 2015, 162,877 people sought asylum in Sweden. Most of the asylum seekers came from wartorn Syria, there were 51,338 asylum seekers (Immigration Service, 2016). The main purpose of the paper was to examine the social workers experience of the psychosocial work environment, and perceived competence at work, at a municipal unit for unaccompanied minors as a result of the increased workload as a result of the refugee crisis. The purpose was answered by the following questions: How do social workers their psychosocial work? How perceived competence in the daily work of the social workers? The method of the study was qualitative. Five semi-structured interviews were conducted with social workers at a municipal unit for unaccompanied minors. The results showed that social workers feel that their psychosocial work is stressful due to the heavy workload arising in consequence of the refugee crisis. The results also showed that social workers perceived competence at work was varied, all experienced that they expand their skills at work through meeting with the unaccompanied minors.

▼ Through three different case studies, this thesis analyzes how unaccompanied minors are constructed and governed as a specific group of refugees in Norway and Sweden. The first study investigates the Norwegian and Swedish media debate from 2000-2008 by examining how incidences of so-called “missing unaccompanied children” were highlighted on the media agenda. Part of this has also been to analyze the specific official actions taken by Norwegian and Swedish authorities. The second study analyzes how unaccompanied minors were framed in a more broad selection of Norwegian and Swedish official policy between 2000-2010 by looking at how unaccompanied children and youngsters were singled out as subjects of knowledge, and the actions and practices that legitimized these constructions. These two case studies demonstrate that unaccompanied minors have been similarly problematized in Norway and Sweden, hence making similar changes in mode of conduct legitimate. They were sometimes singled out as vulnerable children or child victims, but concurrently also as possible strate-gic migrants (adults trying to pass as children, problematic youngsters, etc.). This poses different types of threats to the asylum system, thus justifying care-oriented amid control-oriented strategies in their regard. The third case study analyzes how a selection of caregivers (i.e., officials and support staff) talk about their work with unaccompanied youngsters and children, and describes how 10 youngsters give meaning to their experiences of being categorized as unaccompanied. The caregivers held a repertoire of various constructions that clearly connect to many of the official or public narrations. Sometimes unaccompanied minors are framed as respectable exceptions to other problem categories, and at other times as problematic youngsters in need of compensatory pedagogics in order to overcome specific shortcomings. These caregivers, plus the media and national policy, further frame unaccompanied minors as specific rights holders due to their position-ing as “any other child”, therefore legitimizing softer and more care-oriented strategies. The interviews with the 10 youngsters illustrate how they try to re-position themselves as positive exceptions to the official images of strategic or problematic youngsters highlighted in the media, policy and practice. This study identifies a discourse where a lot of consensus and agreement on problematizations coexist in Norwegian and Swedish policy, public narratives, and in how people in the micro context talk and make sense of unaccompanied minors.

À rebours d'une vaste littérature qui traite les mineurs non accompagnés en tant que groupe – posant des questions concernant leurs trajectoires migratoires, leur résilience plutôt que leur vulnérabilité, ou l'efficacité des politiques censées les protéger –, cette thèse s'inscrit dans une approche constructiviste et interroge les processus par lesquels la catégorie « mineurs non accompagnés » est donnée à voir. Nous analysons la conception de la catégorie juridico-administrative dans les politiques européennes ; les processus de transnationalisation dont elle fait l'objet, et les pratiques d'identification et de surveillance par lesquelles elles est mise en œuvre. La thèse couvre une période de vingt ans et investit trois terrains d'enquête. Tout d'abord, les forums et les arènes européens à Bruxelles, où se dégagent les représentations compassionnelles, et les logiques sur lesquels reposent les concurrences entre acteurs de la protection de l'enfance, des migrations et de la sécurité pour la définition légitime de la catégorie mineurs non accompagnés. Au delà des frontières européennes, l'Égypte est signalée par les acteurs transnationaux comme un « pays d'origine » de mineurs non accompagnés. In this dissertation, we study the career of a target category within migration policies, i.e. unaccompanied minors. Scholars have mostly dealt with unaccompanied minors as an existing group, asking, among others, what their migration trajectories are, whether they are resilient or vulnerable, and the efficiency of protection policies targeting them. Adopting a constructivist approach, this dissertation asks instead: what are the processes through which the category “unaccompanied minors” is actually incorporated into public policy and made visible? Here, its conception as a legal category within European policies is analyzed, along with its transnationalisation, and implementation. This study covers a period of twenty years. It rests on a three-fold fieldwork. Firstly, European forums and political arenas in Brussels are considered, where competition among child protection, migration and security actors can be observed. Secondly, beyond European borders, we consider Egypt as a country that is pointed at by transnational actors as a sending country for unaccompanied underaged migrants. ▼ The focus of this study is on a unique immigrant population — unaccompanied minors who have migrated to the U.S. from Latin America, particularly Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador. The purpose of this qualitative research study is to explore, describe, and understand the migration stories of unaccompanied minors who have migrated to the U.S. from Latin America. Using Lee’s (1966) “Theory of Migration,” this study aimed to uncover the push and pull factors that are motivating youth migration to the U.S. from Latin America, including the social pressures, economic factors, lack of educational and economic opportunities, life-threatening violence, safety concerns, and human rights violations. This qualitative research study offers an analysis of the major themes that arise from semi-structured interviews with eight unaccompanied minors. The study also discusses the availability of the special immigration relief categories, asylum and Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS), as effective options for obtaining Legal Permanent Residence (LPR) status and eventually U.S. citizenship for immigrant children and unaccompanied minors. According to the research findings, the decision of an unaccompanied minor to migrate to the U.S. is typically motivated by three compelling reasons: the dire need to escape the gang and organized crime group violence in their home countries, a lack of educational and economic opportunities, and the desire to reunite with biological parents who were already living in the U.S. Secondly, the journey that unaccompanied minors must take to arrive at the U.S. border is invariably plagued with extreme uncertainty, danger, and a potential for violence by unknown actors. Finally, a combination of quality legal, educational, and social services are vital for the survival and future success of immigrant youth in this country. Several recommendations are made to effectively assist U.S. immigration, legal, and educational systems that work with and serve immigrant child populations. So as to prevent further harm to this vulnerable child population, the researcher highly recommends multicultural competence and anti-racism training and education for practitioners, professionals, attorneys, immigration and state court judges, social workers, and those who work with immigrant children and youth of color. Denna studie undersöker vardagslitteracitet hos ensamkommande unga asylsökandesom studerar på allmänkurs vid en folkhögskola. Deras studier bedrivs på grundskoleochgymnasienivå. Samtliga av de unga är asylsökande med tillfälligt uppehållstillståndvillkorat av deltagande i studier på gymnasienivå.Studiens teoretiska ram tar sin utgångspunkt i en sociokulturell förståelse avlitteracitet utifrån New Literacy Studies samt hur litteracitet formas av diskurser.Dessa teorier sätts i relation till Gees och Wedins forskning kring flerspråkighet ochidentitetsförhandling. Analysen bygger på narrativ som beskriver de sju deltagarnasvardagslitteracitet utifrån insamlade foton och semistrukturerade fotoretrospektivaintervjuer.I studien delges hur deltagarnas vardagslitteracitet formas av omständigheter somkontext, språk, artefakter och arenor. De erfarenheter som framträder i narrativenskildras som fem teman: vardagsrutinernas praktiker, praktiker kringmyndighetskontakter och samhällsengagemang, mediepraktiker, praktiker kringrelationer och personlig kommunikation och lärande praktiker. Olika diskurservillkorar och möjliggör deltagarnas litteracitet. Dessa diskurser kan knytas tilldeltagarnas egen bakgrund, till kamrater, till skolans sammanhang och till detomgivande samhället.Studiens bidrag till forskningsområdet består bland annat i uppmärksammandet av deungas kompetenta förhållningssätt till sin vardagslitteracitet. Folkhögskolan som enmöjlig framgångsrik kontext för språk och litteracitetsutveckling lyfts fram iundersökningens resultat liksom att övergripande samhälleliga normer påverkar synenpå andraspråksinlärares kompetenser och erfarenheter. Av resultaten framträder enbild av den undervisning som deltagarna tar del av som normativt enspråkig, vilketosynliggör deltagarnas språkkompetens och begränsar deras möjligheter att bidra medegna och tidigare erfarenheter. I motsats till detta framstår vardagen utanför skolansom sammanhang där deras litteracitetsförvärvande möter vidare språkligautmaningar. Det är även främst utanför undervisningen, på skolan och i detomgivande samhället, som deltag arnas identitetsförhandling ar ochlitteracitetsutveckling äger rum i mötet med andra och nya diskurser. Dessa resultatuppmärksammar betydelsen av att erfarenheter utanför undervisningen värdesätts ochges utrymme i klassrummet. ▼ This thesis focuses on social work with unaccompanied children and children who are separated from their families. It explores how the minors are being supported, how their needs are being met, and the ways with which their rights are defended towards social inclusion. Inspired by critical social work, the thesis examines social work practice with unaccompanied minors through a critical perspective. An emphasis is put on enhancing children's resilience and the discussion underlines the factors that contribute to their settlement and inclusion in the host country. It, also, discusses the role that the local society can play towards children’s inclusion. The thesis refers to the three domains of approach and practice of social work with unaccompanied children, according to Kohli (2007). These are the provision of practical daily support (the domain of cohesion), the possibility of expressing the trauma of the past and the development of emotional engagement (the domain of connection) and the co-construction of a new start for the future, based on a strong and lasting relationship (the domain of coherence). Based on qualitative methodology, the researcher uses semi-structured interviewing to collect and produce data. The research was conducted in two time periods: The first period was during 2013-2014, before the refugee crisis of 2015-2016, where interviews were conducted with 16 unaccompanied children hosted in the accommodation center in Anogia - Crete and with 4 adult refugees who had been hosted in the center when they were children and they have been living in Greece since then. During this period, 12 interviews were also conducted with professional social workers and others employees in accommodation centers throughout Greece. The second period was during 2017-2018, following the refugee crisis and during this period another 7 interviews were conducted with professional social workers. As the scenery changed radically regarding the conditions of inflow and management of the integration of unaccompanied children, the need to update the research was evident. All interviews were recorded with the participants’ signed consent and they have been transcribed verbatim. A thematic analysis was then used. The thesis reveals the unaccompanied children’s and adult refugees’, (who lived in the accommodation center as children), experiences, their difficulties, their needs and expectations through their own voice. Their experience in regards to their reception and settlement in the host country and the social issues emerging are also presented and analyzed hereby. On the other hand the thesis explores the professional knowledge and experience, the emerging challenges, difficulties and obstacles as well as best practices introduced which underline the strength of the social work practice and policy suggestions for the improvement of services to unaccompanied children. The research questions, which were formulated during the process in cooperation with the girls, were the following: How do the unaccompanied asylum-seeking girls view participation, its relevance and the possibilities for it during their asylum period? How does the liminality of their life situation promote or hinder their participation? How do the intersecting social categories affect their participation? Methodologically, the study focused on how PAR can be applied to promote children’s participation in institutional care in a culturally and gender-sensitive way. The conceptual framework consists mainly of critical pedagogy and intersectionality. Critical pedagogy made the foundations for the PAR, whereas intersectionality helped to comprehend the liminality of the girls’ life worlds. Both theoretical perspectives contributed to understanding and implementing the participatory paradigm. The findings show that the unaccompanied girls’ experiences of participation cannot be explained only through the girls’ vulnerability or their resilience, as they clearly belong to both categories and move within them. The participation, which was meaningful for the girls, reflected their fluid positions in relation to their gender, age and status as asylum seekers. Participation meant both the right to voice opinions and the possibility to choose silence, as well as the opportunity to include ‘ordinary things’ into their lives.

Yhteensä 12 yksin maahan tullutta turvapaikanhakijatyttöä Somaliasta, Angolasta ja Kongon demokraattisesta tasavallasta osallistui toimintatutkimuksen keinoin pohtimaan lasten osallisuutta turvapaikkaprosessin aikana, ja miettimään keinoja miten lasten osallisuutta ja hyvinvointia voisi edistää. ▼ The purpose of the current study was to investigate the lives of former unaccompanied refugee minors (URMs) through an inductive exploration of their individual life stories, utilizing principles of grounded theory and case study methods to identify and examine their experiences and outcomes in resettlement, as well as emergent theoretical principles and practice implications regarding this population. Individual interviews of approximately 2 hours were conducted with 20 young adult refugees who had emancipated from an Unaccompanied Refugee Minor foster care program within the last six years. Interviews were largely unstructured, allowing former URMs to explore, from their own perspectives, the most salient experiences and influences in their lives since the time of their arrival in the U.S. Participants were 18 males and 2 females from five countries of origin, ranging in age from 20 to 27. The major findings of the study include the identification and description of common experiences among former URMs from the time of their resettlement through early adulthood, as well as the factors they deem most influential in shaping their lives. The study also investigated key aspects of former URMs’ experiences and outcomes that distinguish them as a unique group with challenges, strengths, and goals unlike other refugee or foster care populations. In addition, the study identified specific factors in the lives of subgroups of former URMs which may further differentiate their resettlement experiences. A conceptual model is proposed which includes risk and protective factors in the pre-flight, displacement, and resettlement phases of URMs’ lives and their influence on URMs’ current functioning in multiple life domains. Results of the study are analyzed in light of prior literature with refugee and foster care populations, and implications for refugee service providers, including URM programs, are presented. ▼ This project focuses on educational and life trajectories of Central American youth in St. Louis, Missouri, who have immigrated unaccompanied from Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua. By tracking and telling their stories, I hope to amplify these young immigrants’ voices, and complicate others’ perceptions of their place and worth in this country. Current immigration policies and enforcement practices have made the entry process more punitive, restrictive and deadly. The immigrant experience, especially for young people, confronts many state institutions, chief among them the educational system. Institutions like schools become entry points for immigrants but can also be spaces for encounters with new forms of discipline and violence as well as potential sites for positive transformations. Based on eighteen months of research in the International Welcome Center, a public school in St Louis suburbs, this dissertation explores and chronicles the experiences of one group of predominantly Central American immigrants both in the school and in the region. In chronicling the arrival and presence of unaccompanied Central American minors, I have identified a phenomenon understudied in this particular region. These students are invisible in St. Louis metropolitan region, a region that does not perceive itself as an immigrant destination, despite its long history of refugee resettlement. Not only are conversations missing regionally, conversations on experiences of immigrants on a local or micro scale are missing in the scholarship as well. This population shift places demands on educational institutions and systems (Suarez-Orozco et. al. 2010), including English language acquisition and mental health counseling. Immigrant students are often viewed as less worthy, less capable academically, even criminal. I was expecting to find the International Welcome Center to be source of challenges for the students. Instead, I discovered a place of refuge. It is an outlier in a local system unprepared and ambivalent about the rights of Latino immigrants to be in the schools. Using life history narratives, classroom exercises, and long-term hanging out and chatting with the students, I show how young people are impacted by violence and trauma, and continue to confront borders and obstacles in their struggle to get by. Border crossings are a daily occurrence for these students, putting themselves at risk when they leave their front door and travel to school, to work, or to the store. The school itself replicated some of these challenges, given its concerns with security. However, contrary to what other studies have found, the institution was able to act as a place where immigrant youth feel a sense of safety and belonging. Through this work, I have found that within schools, individual actors seeing these students as whole, as worthy, combined with flexible school policies allowed the teachers to tailor the school environment to serve these students. ▼ The study investigates the welfare of children in crisis with Unaccompanied Refugee Minors (URMs) from Zimbabwe and the models of pastoral care that are extended to them in a context of HIV and AIDS. URMs are children who have been forced to migrate by the socio-economic and political conditions prevalent in Zimbabwe. Other than the socio-economic and political conditions these children are vulnerable to HIV and AIDS. Many of the children are received at the Central Methodist Church in Johannesburg. They are taken care of by caregivers from Zimbabwe. Some of URMs reside in the Methodist church community centre in Soweto and some reside in the Central Methodist Church building in Johannesburg. This study is done from an African perspective of pastoral care in a context of HIV and AIDS. It seeks to study pastoral care that is organic using the reality of URMs in a context of HIV and AIDS. The Central Methodist Church received URMs as a form of pastoral care, but it is not clear what models of pastoral care are used to care for them. This grounded theory study used data collected through interviews and narrative research (story telling) from 20 URMs and 3 Care givers from Zimbabwe and Bishop Paul Verryn the head of the Central Methodist Church in Johannesburg. Analyzed data was used to describe in detail URMs and their Care givers‟ understanding of pastoral care as well as the models of pastoral care offered to URMs in a context of HIV and AIDS. Finally, the findings lead to a contextual pastoral care model with children in crisis in a context of HIV and AIDS. This study formulated this contextual model as a cultural-gendered pastoral care model with children in crisis in a context of HIV and AIDS. The model was established to develop a practical method to use in practical theology and pastoral care in the care for children in crisis without adult guidance in a context of HIV and AIDS.
