▼ Chameleon is a physics-based landscape modeling software system designed for modeling and simulations applications. Hyperspectral laboratory, field, and imaging spectrometer measurements are collected as empirical foundation data. Linear spectral unmixing is performed to decompose each image pixel into spectral endmembers. Mathematical manipulation of these fractional abundances and introduction of new spectral information is accomplished with spectral editing tools. Image spectra are modified on a sub-pixel, per-pixel, or neighborhood basis, or the entire hypercube can be customized at once. Chameleon then regenerates synthetic, but spectrally accurate, terrain models using linear spectral remixing algorithms. By incorporating elevation, sun angle, and weather data, the landscape becomes a "Chameleon"- able to change hyperspectral properties based on multitemporal spectral measurements, requirements for developmental tests and operational training, or as required by specific simulation scenarios. Advanced knowledge of natural environments to be modeled is prerequisite to generating useful synthetic terrains. Our spectral research on and Quaternary geomorphic surfaces suggests that deserts (often assumed to be less difficult to study remotely than humid, temperate, and cold environments) are more complex than is generally accepted. A variety of rock coatings can significantly alter reflectance in the solar reflected spectrum. Weathering rinds and carbonate deposits inhibit lithologic reflectance altogether. However, manganese-rich rock varnish obscures rock reflectance in the visible and near infrared wavelengths, but transmits lithologic information in the 2,000 to 2,500 nanometer (nm) wavelengths. Surface soils on desert pavements consist of a layer of eolian dust that overlies an accreting vesicular (Av) horizon. These soils have same structure and chemistry, and, therefore, the same hyperspectral signature, regardless of landform age, geomorphic process, or parent material. From a remote sensing perspective, this has a normalizing effect on reflectance across the landscape. Spectral Mixture Analysis is a proven hyperspectral technique for mapping composition and abundance of surface materials characteristic of volcanic landforms that exhibit diagnostic absorption features. We found that desert pavement spectra are featureless in that they exhibit few distinct spectral features related to rock varnish, clast lithology, or soil. Image spectra of these surfaces are the result of intimate mixtures of heterogeneous materials, requiring nonlinear spectral unmixing solutions. Advisors/Committee Members: Rosenfeld, Charles L. ▼ The Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) is a hybrid finite element formulation that can alleviate many of the drawbacks from the traditional Lagrangian-based and Eulerian-based finite element simulations, which is developed through combining modern algorithms for Lagrangian hydrodynamics, meshing technology and remap methods developed for high-resolution Eulerian methods. Lagrangian-based finite element formulations is that the computational system moves with the material and main drawback is that it will face severe problems to deal with strong distortions in the computational domain. Eulerian-based finite element formulations is that the computational system is a prior fixed in space and unable to deal easily with fluids undergo large distortions at the interface. The use of Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) computer codes has been an enabling technology for many important applications. When using the ALE technique in engineering simulations, the computational mesh inside the domains can move arbitrarily to optimize the shapes of elements, while the mesh on the boundaries and interfaces of the domains can move along with materials to precisely track the boundaries and interfaces of a multi-material system. In automotive CAE durability analysis, simulation of dynamic stress and fatigue life of fuel tank straps is a complex problem. Typically a fuel tank is held with fuel tank straps. Its movement lies in the domain of nonlinear large rotation dynamics. Moreover, the sloshing behavior in the fuel tank makes the problem even more intricate. The objective of this study is to investigate the advantage of ALE method in simulating fuel sloshing through fuel tank and fuel tank strap movement under proving ground conditions using the nonlinear large rotation dynamic method with RADIOSS, a commercial code. After the stress distribution of the fuel tank strap is achieved, a commercial fatigue code, nCode DesignLife, is used to predict the fatigue life of the fuel tank straps. In this research, the stress distribution of the fuel tank strap can be predicted with Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian Method (ALE) to simulate fuel sloshing which plays critical role in fuel mass redistribution and the stress variation with time. A commercial fatigue code, nCode DesignLife, is used to predict the fatigue life of the fuel tank straps. The analyses have accurately predicted the crack initiation location and sequence in the fuel tank straps, and show good correlation with test. The utilization of this method can give design direction to minimize the iteration of lab testing and expedite the design period. Advisors/Committee Members: Chin-An Tan.

In der Salzofenhöhle im Toten Gebirge in der Steiermark wurden im Laufe der Zeit während mehrerer Grabungen eine große Anzahl fossiler Funde entdeckt. Das untersuchte Material wurde von Dr. Kurt Ehrenberg 1939 und von 1959 bis 1964 geborgen. Der Haupthöhleneingang befindet sich auf 2005 Meter Seehöhe. Neben dem Haupteingang gibt es noch etliche Nebenhöhleneingänge. K. Ehrenberg war damals für die Bergung des Materials zuständig und arbeitete im Auftrag des Bundesdenkmalamtes. Ein Teil der Funde der Salzofenhöhle wurde bereits untersucht. Diese sind z.T. im Kammerhofmuseum Bad Aussee, z.T. im Institut für Paläontologie der Universität Wien aufbewahrt. Die gewonnenen Daten sind im Rahmen der Monographie „Die Evolution des Höhlenbärengebisses“ publiziert worden (vgl. Rabeder 1999). Die taxonomische Bestimmung der damaligen Funde ergab Ursus spelaeus eremus. (vgl. Rabeder & Hofreiter 2004; vgl. Rabeder et al. 2008) Das bei den Grabungen unter der Leitung von K. Ehrenberg von 1950 bis 1964 geborgene Fossilmaterial liegt im Naturhistorischem Museum Wien auf und wurde dort aufgearbeitet. Alle Schädelfragmente, Metapodien und Zähne wurden inventarisiert und vermessen. Es wurden vorwiegend Längen und Breiten vermessen. Nach der Vermessung wurde anschließend noch der morphologische Typ der Prämolaren (P4 sup und p4 inf) und der 2. Molaren (M2 sup und m2 inf) bestimmt. Die gewonnen Daten wurden dann mit den Standardwerten der Gamssulzen Höhle sowie mit den Werten anderer vor allem alpiner Faunen verglichen. Das Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, einen vollständigen Katalog der Bärenzähne aus der Salzofenhöhle zu erstellen und die bereits gewonnenen Forschungsergebnisse zu überprüfen, zu bestätigen und zu erweitern.

In the course of time, several excavations were conducted in the Salzofenhöhle in the Totes Gebirge, Styria, and they led to numerous fossil findings. The examined material was discovered by Dr. Kurt Ehrenberg in 1939 and between 1959 and 1964. The main cave-entrance is located 2005 meters above sea level. Apart from the main entrance there are various side entrances into the cave. K. Ehrenberg was in charge of the recovery of the material and worked on behalf of the Federal Monuments Office. Some of the fossil findings of the Salzofenhöhle have already been examined. Parts of these are kept in the Kammerhofmuseum of Bad Aussee, while others are in the Institute of Paleontology of the University of Vienna. The generated data were published within the framework of the monograph “Die Evolution des Höhlenbärengebisses” (see Rabeder 1999). The taxonomic identification of those former findings resulted in Ursus spelaeus eremus. (vgl. Rabeder & Hofreiter 2004; vgl. Rabeder et al. 2008) The fossil findings discovered at the excavations supervised by K. Ehrenberg between 1950 and 1964 can be inspected at the Natural History Museum of Vienna, where they were retouched. All skull fragments, metapodials and teeth were inventoried and measured. ▼ An evaluation of a federal regulatory program administered by the Baltimore District Corps of Engineers (COE), governing certain development activities in Maryland's coastal zone, was conducted to (1) identify cumulative development and wetland impact outcomes that occurred over a 5-year (1981-1985) period; and (2) assess a component of the decision-making process that resulted in these outcomes. This study focuses specifically on program coordination between the COE and the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) to evaluate how the process has been affected by (1) programmatic changes resultant of the Reagan Administration's regulatory reform; and (2) societal demands as indicated by changes in coastal development. Evaluative results not only help to identify district/regional-level program deficiencies, but also to emphasize changes necessary to improve federal agency policies. Effectiveness of interagency coordination between the COE and NMFS in the public interest review was contingent upon the extent to which NMFS recommendations ("conservation efforts") were accepted by the COE. Conservation effort values were based on (1) ranked wetland habitats; (2) the magnitude of habitat impact; and (3) areal extent of habitat NMFS desired to conserve. Coordination effectiveness between the COE and NMFS in the public interest review was not significantly affected by decreasing mean annual permit processing time that occurred over the 5-year period. NMFS' conservation efforts were adversely affected by (1) reform measures shifting the "burden of proof" to the resource agencies; and (2) the declining quality of interagency joint-permit processing. Manpower limitations and subjective value judgments made by NMFS staff were other probably indirect influential factors. Measures to improve the effectiveness of interagency coordination and to better approximate a balanced public interest review are discussed. Outcome evaluation identified similar development patterns among Maryland's four coastal regions. Regions were comprised of coastal counties experiencing both nodal and diffuse development. Counties were often characterized by specific types of development. Private marinas, especially "docominiums" and wildlife enhancement impoundments are two development activities significantly increasing in Maryland. Projects authorized by the Baltimore District COE resulted in the loss of 913.1 acres of vegetated and non-vegetated coastal wetlands, alteration of 1280.8 acres of estuarine sub-tidal habitats, and a gain of 687.9 new wetland acres. Estuarine irregularly flooded emergent and palustrine forested wetlands sustained the greatest habitat losses. Significant percentages of wetland losses were attributed to a limited number of large major impacts.

▼ This study evaluates the decision-making process of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE) as it applies to the selection of land or open-water disposal sites for sediment from dredging projects planned by the COE. The study seeks to illustrate: 1) the structure of the COE decision-making process as provided for in laws, regulations, and COE policies; 2) the operational, economic, and environmental variables that might influence COE decision-making; 3) how the New England Division of the COE makes decisions on disposal sites for dredged material through consideration of operational, economic and environmental objectives. The study finds that the COE decision-making process, with respect to dredged material disposal, is structurally complex and bureaucratic in nature. It is characterized by the interaction of numerous laws, regulations, federal agencies, and public and private interests. The process is designed to accommodate potentially conflicting interests and objectives. There are many potentially important variables involved in the decision-making process. The possibility of conflicts between operational, economic and environmental objectives requires flexibility in decision-making. Because the potential environmental effects of dredged material disposal are still poorly understood, the environmental objective is the one most easily compromised. Based upon the quantitative evaluation performed in this study, the operational economic and environmental variable groups that were examined appear to have little or no influence on disposal site decision-making in the New England Division (NED) of the COE. This suggests that, in practice, the NED decision-making process is loosely structured, project specific, and highly subjective in nature. That finding is probably a function of the complex nature of both the dredged material disposal problem and the decision-making process. It is difficult for the NED decision-makers to objectively assess the same set of variables in each disposal decision. The diversity of potentially important variables, and the variability of project conditions make the application of broad-scale decision rules impractical. The decision-making process must be flexible enough to accommodate the special considerations of each project. As a result, disposal site selections must be made on a project-by-project basis, and are ultimately subjective in nature. The findings of this study raise an interesting issue in terms of the COE'environmental regulatory requirements. The New England Division does not appear to be making an attempt to exclude or restrict all potentially contaminated dredged material from open-water disposal. It seems that dredged material is excluded from open-water disposal only if it obviously violates current regulatory standards. ▼ During the 18th and 19th centuries, planners, and medical reformists emphasized the restorative effects of natural settings in healthcare facilities. Then, in the 19th and 20th centuries, many hospitals campuses across the United States extensively applied therapeutic landscapes in their designs. While the architectural history of hospitals has been studied thoroughly, the gardens of healthcare institutions have not been independently investigated. In the 20th century, socio-cultural changes and modern technologies caused a degradation of therapeutic landscapes in hospitals. Today, new approaches to medicine and health necessitate a reexamination and reinvention of hospital landscapes in order to better align hospital atmospheres with modern healthcare goals. The goal of this dissertation research is to understand the transformation of hospital landscapes, their evolution and degradation within their socio-cultural context during the 19th and 20th centuries in the United States. This study will also addresses the broad concept of therapeutic landscapes and holistic approaches to using hospital gardens for restorative purposes. Therefore, this research aims to redefine the therapeutic landscape in healthcare facilities by proposing ideas to expand their socio – cultural capacities and extend their therapeutic properties beyond conventional practice. This research hypothesizes that throughout the 19th and 20th centuries in the United States, the therapeutic landscape in hospitals was degraded, and that the reemergence of conventional landscape practices is insufficient to address the whole healing properties of hospital sites. To achieve the stated goal, this research applied a qualitative approach through a case study method. Data collection was conducted via a triangulation strategy, and included semi- structural interviews, content analysis, and an extensive literature review. In analyzing the collected data, I used thick description, spatial-comparative analysis, and content analysis integrated into a holistic framework, in order to examine both historical and modern practices. Analysis of results concluded that throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the therapeutic hospital landscapes in the United States became degraded due to the introduction of new technologies. In addition, the reemergence of conventional landscape practices, such as small healing gardens, does not fully address the restorative potential of hospital sites. La compréhension des processus orogéniques nécessite un couplage toujours plus étroit entre données pétrologiques visant à contraindre le trajet pression-température des roches et les données géochronologiques donnant accès aux âges et durées absolues. Cette thèse vise en premier lieu à étudier le comportement des monazites et des zircons, utilisés en géochronométrie U-Th-Pb dans les granulites de ultra-haute température (UHT) du Rogaland (sud de la Norvège). Nous montrons que la datation ponctuelle in-situ U-Th-Pb, combinée à l'analyse des éléments majeurs et traces contenus dans la monazite permet d'identifier et de quantifier deux incursions à ultra-haute température du Rogaland à 1030-1005 Ma et à 940-930 Ma. En effet, l'examen des relations de phases à l'équilibre entre monazite, xénotime et huttonite a permis de démontrer que les monazites étaient capables de cristalliser et d'enregistrer des températures supérieures à 880 °C. D'autre part, la caractérisation chimique et isotopique U-Th-Pb-O des néocristallisations et surcroissances des zircons permet de définir un intervalle de temps de 60 Ma entre les deux pics de métamorphisme, au cours duquel la croûte moyenne était partiellement fondue à des températures supérieures à 800°C et à basse pression (0.7-0.4 GPa). Ces travaux de thèse soulignent par ailleurs la variété des facteurs susceptibles de conduire à la remise à zéro, partielle ou non, des âges U-Th-Pb dans les monazites et les zircons. Nous montrons que compte tenu de l'histoire T-t du domaine étudié, le système chronométrique U-Th-Pb est largement contrôlé dans le zircon par le degré d'amorphisation de ce dernier lié à son auto-irradiation, alors que dans la monazite, ce sont les processus de dissolution-recristallisation en présence de fluides silicatés ou aqueux qui sont prépondérants. Nous montrons également qualitativement l'influence des conditions d'oxydo-réduction dans l'incorporation du S comme sulfate dans le réseau cristallin de la monazite et par conséquent le potentiel que représente la monazite pour sonder l'état d'oxydo-réduction lié aux différents évènements géologiques, dans les roches métamorphiques. Finalement, nous mettons en évidence une corrélation spatiale et temporelle entre magmatisme mantellique et métamorphisme de ultra-haute température qui ne peut être expliquée avec les modèles actuellement acceptés pour la genèse du métamorphisme de UHT. Ces observations peuvent néanmoins être expliquées en prenant en compte la différence de composition et de température du manteau Protérozoïque comparé à l'actuel, favorisant le développement d'orogènes ultra-chauds et de phénomènes gravitaires.

This research proposal has as its starting point the current phase of renewed public and private industrial large investments in the state of Rio de Janeiro, mainly from the 2000s. The changes resulting from this process have (re)ordered the territories under the aegis of the demands of corporations. The study objective understand how the installation of Complex Superporto Acu in S?o Jo?o da Barra - RJ and its unfolding have changed the dynamics of national spatial planning, engendering the creation of new territoriality for family farmers , resettled in the called ?Vila da Terra? and artisanal fishermen . Such groups are historically established in the municipality and has in the land and aquatic environments an important element of their social reproduction. Data from fieldwork show that a significant number of people are unhappy because they have not been heard during the process and by the way the disappropriations were conducted. Moreover, discontent arises in the imposition of new fishing zoning and a set of ' normatives ' which restrict the exercise of agricultural activities in ?Vila da Terra?. For the construction of the thematic, the groups were heard, in the field research, through the method of non-participant observation. With the implementation of open and semi-structured questionnaires , in the areas of expropriation , resettlement and fishing . Thus, we can infer that the current process has been responsible for imposing new territoriality, with disruptions in the historical social buildings mediated in the territories, and the more delicate result is a real possibility of annihilation of knowledge, and ways of life.

The space of the house has an essential role in Portuguese culture, not only in the physical sense, but also in its intersection with the social, economic and symbolic aspects. This is an object of study in several areas and, especially in literature, whether literary creation or critical reflection, the theme is fruitful. This thesis, through bibliographical research, seeks to analyse the recurrent theme of Portuguese characters who are self-enclosed at home, in the following novels published in Portugal in the 21st century: Vista da praia, by Jos? Couto Nogueira (2001); Campo de sangue, by Dulce Maria Cardoso (2002); Todos os dias, by Jorge Reis-S? (2006); o apocalipse dos trabalhadores, by Valter Hugo M?e (2008); O arquip?lago da ins?nia , by Ant?nio Lobo Antunes (2008); O ano sab?tico, by Jo?o Tordo (2013); Debaixo de algum c?u, by Nuno Camarneiro (2013); O osso da borboleta, by Rui Cardoso Martins (2014); Os memor?veis, by L?dia Jorge (2014); ?ndice m?dio de felicidade, by David Machado (2015); Uma senhora nunca, by Patr?cia M?ller (2016). The analysis of the group of texts considers aspects of the space as a narrative category, conceptions about space from philosophy, such as the idea of lived space, and geography, such as the concept of place, as well as from other fields of knowledge, and also considers studies about Portuguese culture. All these data are used to explore how the characters experience the space of the house, revealing the presence of an aspect of Portuguese culture that spans hundreds of years: the islander complex, as conceived by the historian Ant?nio Jos? Saraiva.

▼ Mexico’s official history does not properly address the Drug Wars and its effect on the nation as well as the U.S. – Mexico border region, including criminal spillover between the two countries especially since 1911. Drawing from evidence gathered at Mexico’s National Archives – specifically declassified documents from Mexico’s secret police files – contemporary news accounts from Tijuana, Mexico City, and California, as well as court cases and long ignored political biographies, I trace the historical origins of the Drug Wars in Northern Mexico extending into Mexico City; a history of drugs, dissidence, and violence. In my view, the problem of drugs in Mexico must be examined in Three Phases, two of which – Phase One and Two – I take up in the volume. The First Phase is from 1911-1945. The Second Phase is from 1945-1985. The Third Phase, since 1985, covers the rise of what I refer to as turf wars between competing drug trafficking organizations for the control of specific corridors vital for the production and distribution of drugs into the United States.The First Phase goes back to the year 1911 when General and later Governor Esteban Cantú arrived to defend the Northern Territory of Baja California against incursions from Southern California by the Flores Magón brothers during the start of the Mexican Revolution. This was also a period where the role of vice tourism in Tijuana and Mexicali profited from the Prohibition Era in the United States (1920-1933) set the foundations for a drug trafficking model– developed for Baja Norte by Governor Cantú. This cross-border smuggling model was later refined in Baja under General and then Governor Abelardo L. Rodríguez (1921-1930), who then took the model to Mexico when he joined President Ortiz as a Secretary of Defense (1932) and Economy (1932) before he became Interim President of Mexico (1932-1934). The model has held to this day.The Second Phase encompasses Mexico’s official start on the War on Drugs from 1945 to 1985 and coincides not surprisingly with the start of the Cold War in the late 1940s. In this Second Phase I analyze the consolidation and metamorphoses of Drug Trafficking Organizations in Mexico’s War on Drugs up to 1960. Thus, I explore the connection between East-Coast based Mafia and its incursion and eventual control of the drug trade and organized crime in the West Coast as well as eventually the transborder region. I also analyze the early eradication campaigns carried out by Mexican authorities first on their Baja regional level and subsequently at the national level. I also examine links between “Bugsy” Siegel and his alleged control of the drug trade in Southern California, which stretched easily to Tijuana. This volume also investigates the War on Drugs and a “hidden dirty-war” against dissidence and peasants in rural Mexico, a span that ranged from 1965 to 1985.
