▼ There has been an accelerated use of Computer Numerical Control machine tools by developed countries over the past decade resulting in manufacturing companies becoming more competitive on the world market. However, the initial cost of these machines is prohibitive to many companies in the third world countries such as Zambia. Therefore,methods of adapting these machines to do much more than initially designed for would make the investment much more attractive. Various CNC machine builders have developed latest designs of combined turning and milling centres. This has been made possible through construction of more than three axes of rotation. None of the three-axis machining facilities convert a machining centre to a turning centre. It was the goal of this research to investigate the possibility of modifying a 3-axes CNC Vertical Machining Centre (VMC) to include CNC turning operations. This report outlines the research activity in the Department of Mechanical Engineering - School of Engineering at University of Zambia, exploring the methodology for widening the capability of a VMC to operate as a Turning Centre as well. The main objective was to add a modification to the existing Supermax 65A Vertical Machine Centre, so that turning operations could be performed within the designed parameters and programming software.During the research, fixtures for tool and workpiece holding were designed and produced.These were designed in line with the requirement for turning operations, original machine tool designed features and parameters. The use of Mastercam Mill software (Direct Numerical Control) and manual programming (Manual Data Input) were demonstrated as options for carrying out numerical control turning operations. Three samples of typical turned profiles were produced using designed fixtures. An estimation of force and power consumed during these operations was carried out. Although the study had certain limitations as regards the size and weight of turned jobs, it enhanced the number of part profiles that could be produced on the CNC Supermax 65A. The results proved that CNC machine tools could be improved for adaptability and productivity at minimum cost to a company.

▼ High temperature developed during cutting process is an important factor that influences tool wear, decreases tool life and effects componentâ€™s quality. The metal cutting fluid used in industry causes environmental and health problems, and has low efficiency, while newer cooling methods such as cryogenic cooling and mist coolant are much more expensive. This thesis suggests a novel but simple design of an internally cooled cutting tool. Circulating water as the cooling fluid in a closed loop circuit contributes to reducing the pollution and health problems. Results from experimental works show that machining EN8 and titanium alloy with internal cooling can effectively reduce the insert temperature by 30% and the tool life when machining EN8 is doubled. A 3D fully coupled thermal-displacement model has been developed to simulate the turning process. This model is linked to a 3D thermal model the input conditions (contact region between the tool and chip, and the nodal heat loads) for which are obtained from the 3D mechanical model. The 3D fully coupled thermal-displacement model uses Johnson-Cook constitutive material model with a pure Lagrangian formulation, and the friction phenomena is modelled by the Coulomb law of friction. This model showed the cutting process in an intuitive way and the temperature distribution in the insert, contact area and the heat entering the insert were calculated. However, run times were excessive and this limited further development of the 3D fully coupled thermal-displacement model. Results from the fully coupled thermal-displacement model were fed into either the 3D thermal Abaqus model or CFD model. Both these models consider the cutting tool, with its internal cooling channel. In the 3D thermal model, the heat transfer coefficients of 14 the water at different temperatures were calculated by empirical equations whereas in the CFD model, the flow is simulated, and the heat transfer coefficients were calculated internally. Both the CFD and 3D thermal models yielded similar results, and both sets of results show agreement with experimental results. The CFD model, developed using STAR CCM+, provided a better insight into the cooling performance as it showed areas of the cooling channel where sub-cooled nucleate boiling occurred. Results obtained from the different models were verified with experimental values; in the experiments, the three components of the forces and temperatures were measured. A specially designed holder was machined from tool steel, and cooling channels were machined on the back face of the insert. The simulation and experimental results have shown that the maximum temperature on the rake face was reduced by an average of 213Â°C, which represents a reduction of 29%. ▼ Both the overall quality of parent-adolescent relationships and the changes that occur in parent-child relationships during adolescence have implications for adolescents??? overall adjustment and well-being. Developing autonomy from their parents is one outcome that children negotiate during adolescence. The focus of this study is how parent-adolescent communication functions to optimize adolescent individuation from their parents. The Retrospective Interview Technique (RIT) was used with 31 adolescents to explore the types of turning points they reported experiencing and the developmental trajectories of their relationships with their parents. Participants were also asked to describe how different turning points influenced changes in their autonomy with their parents and how communication with their parents was associated with various turning points. Participants reported 12 categories of turning points, of which ???moving away from home,??? ???realizations about parents,??? and ???new relationships??? were the most frequent. Seven trajectory types emerged from the data, with the stagnating-linear trajectory reported by most participants. Previous studies have defined autonomy development as a linear process in that adolescents gain more autonomy as they age. In the current study, autonomy followed different pathways. Some of those pathways were linear, but some were not linear. The turning points that participants discussed were both turning points they negotiated with their parents and turning points that happened to them. These findings are discussed from a multiple goals perspective. A multiple goals perspective highlights the idea that as parents and adolescents move towards more autonomy, that task is made challenging by other salient identity and relationship goals. From a normative perspective, it is useful to know about the likelihood for identity and relational goals to conflict with autonomy development negotiations because it provides an example of the kinds of challenges that parents and adolescents face. ▼ A growing emphasis, particularly in the automotive, aerospace and biomedical industry, is the production of machined components characterised by high reliability with maximum safety. This characteristic requires predictability of functional performance over the operating life of the components. The effect of the functional performance is owing to the quality of the machined surface including the metallurgical and mechanical state of the subsurface layer as well as topography. The drive towards quality assurance has led to the need to predict fatigue life and other service life parameters from machining processes. Past studies on the functional performance of the machined surface have suggested a correlation between the residual stresses induced by machining and the resulting fatigue life of the product. By setting proper cutting conditions, it should be possible to obtain longer fatigue life for machined parts. The aim of this study was testing the hypothesis that a process signature could be established and exploited to control the surface integrity of machined components. The focus of the study was to understand the link between cutting conditions, process signals, residual stress and fatigue life in turning AISI 1045 steel. Cutting tools of nose radius of 0.8 mm and 0.2 mm were used in fine cutting at 0.1 mm/rev. The signals and resulting residual stress were studied. To further promote more ploughing and mechanism for the generation of preferential compressive residual stress, these cutting tools were modified to bespoke chamfers. The resulting surface integrity was evaluated after turning with these chamfered tools. The residual stress was evaluated in the circumferential and axial directions. The study was conducted for both dry cutting and cutting with flood coolant. Cutting forces, current and voltage were measured during the cutting tests. These enabled the evaluation of specific cutting force and energy and specific energy requirements. The link between the process signals and residual stress was evaluated. Conditions for generation of minimum tensile strength on machined surfaces or compressive residual stress were determined. Fatigue life testing components were then machined based on the investigated conditions. These were used to study the fatigue life of the tensile and compressive residual stress state components. Findings showed that better surface finish and higher hardness of machined component could be obtained by using a small nose radius tool and the finest finishing cut. This surface integrity property was associated with a mid-range power, energy, force, specific force profile and specific energy profile. Better surface roughness and more extended fatigue life performance were obtained using a 0.8 mm nose radius with cutting fluid application. The work highlighted a possible future to control the generation of compressive residual stress in machining by manipulating tool sharpness in the ploughing regime and maximising the desired output process. ▼ Titanium alloys have outstanding mechanical properties such as high hardness, a good strength-to-weight ratio, excellent fatigue properties and high corrosion resistance. However, several inherent properties including their low thermal conductivity and high chemical affinity to tool materials impairs severely their machinability with conventional machining techniques. Conventional machining of Ti-based alloys is typically characterized by low depths of cuts and relatively low feed rates, thus adversely affecting the material removal rates during the machining process. Recently, a non-conventional machining technique known as ultrasonically assisted turning (UAT) was introduced to machine modern alloys, in which low-energy, high-frequency vibration is superimposed on the movement of a cutting tool during a conventional cutting process. This novel machining technique results in a multi-fold decrease in the level of cutting forces with a concomitant improvement in surface finish of machined modern alloys. Also, since the late 20th century, machining of wear resistant materials that soften when heated has been carried out with hot machining techniques. In this work, a new hybrid machining technique called Hot Ultrasonically Assisted Turning (HUAT) is introduced for processing of a Ti-based alloy Ti-15V3Al3Cr3Sn. In this technique, UAT is combined with a traditional hot machining technique to gain combined advantages of both schemes for machining of intractable alloys. HUAT of the studied alloy was analysed experimentally and numerically to demonstrate its benefits in terms of reduction in cutting forces over a wide range of industrially relevant speed-feed combinations. Thermal evolution in the cutting process was assessed, and the obtained results were compared with FE simulations to gain knowledge of temperatures reached in the cutting zone. The developed novel turning process appeared to improve dry turning of the Ti alloy with significant reduction of average cutting forces without any substantial metallurgical changes in the workpiece material. Nano-indentation, light microscopy and SEM studies were performed to get an insight into the development of hardness in a zone near the machined surface in the workpiece. Backscatter electron microscopy was also used to evaluate the formation of α-Ti during the novel HUAT. No grain changes or α-precipitation were observed in machined workpieces in conventional and hybrid turning processes. 3D elasto-plastic thermomechanically coupled finite-element models for the orthogonal turning process were developed for conventional turning (CT), hot conventional turning (HCT), UAT and HUAT, followed by a more realistic novel 3D finite-element model for the oblique turning process. These 3D models were used to study the effects of cutting parameters (cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut, ultrasonic vibration, ultrasonic frequency, rake angle and tool nose radius) on cutting forces, temperature in the process zone and stresses. Ultraprecision, single point diamond turning (SPDT) is a tool based machining technology that allows the ability to produce high quality surface finishes on the order of nanometers while meeting tight form tolerances on the order of micrometers. It is generally agreed that surface finish in SPDT is primarily affected by four factors: Tool edge quality, relative vibration between the tool and workpiece, material properties and microstructure, and tool geometry (nose radius and machining parameters) machining. To the author’s knowledge, no work has been done to combine all the factors to study their effect on surface generation in SPDT. This is important given that the factors are highly interdependent. Two diamond tools with nose radius of 12mm were used; however, one of them was chemically honed. Results suggest that the honed tool provides a much better surface finish with a significantly reduced amount of running-in stage tool wear. The cutting edge radius of the diamond tools was measured using a novel 3D confocal laser microscope to analyze the chemical honing process and to measure tool wear. The presence of built-up edge (BUE) is more prominent on the honed tool earlier in its life which results in unpredictable surface roughness to appear sooner than on the regular tool. To understand the dynamics of the machine, a redesign of the tool holder bracket was done to increase stiffness. Modal tests were then performed on it to verify performance improvement. With an understanding of the vibration and its effect on the cutting force, a 400Hz disturbance frequency was detected in the cutting forces. From a 3D scan of the surface, a total of 24 undulations on the surface of the part were observed when the spindle speed was set to 1000RPM The machine was instrumented and a rotordynamic investigation was carried out to determine the cause and nature of the vibration in an effort to reduce it and in so doing improve surface form accuracy.

▼ CUTCHIN EVANS, HEATHER RENEE. Effect of Angle of Turning and Shaking Agitation During Incubation on Embryo Development and Hatchability. (Under the direction of Michael J. Wineland.) Successful incubation is the result of many factors, including turning the eggs to a 45Ã‚Â° angle once an hour through day 18 or 19 of incubation. Not turning eggs at all during incubation leads to high percentages of embryonic mortality throughout incubation as well as several distinct extra-embryonic abnormalities, such as a decrease in sub-embryonic fluid formation, an increase in the amount of residual albumen after d18, and others which can be harmful to chick weight at hatch. However, turning eggs creates hot spots in the machine, therefore developing a way to increase air flow by turning egg less or not turning at all but still providing change in orientation of the egg would increase the hatchability as well as provide a more even chick quality across the machine. Three trials were performed to examine the effects of turning at reduced angles of 15Ã‚Â°, 30Ã‚Â°, 35Ã‚Â° and 40Ã‚Â° once an hour as well as increased frequency of turning at a reduced angle of 15Ã‚Â° three times an hour. Eggs were obtained from prime age broiler breeder flocks and stored for 1-3 days prior to incubation to imitate industry ideal conditions. Subembryonic fluid was sampled at d6 of incubation and embryos were sampled at d18. At hatch, embryonic day of death was noted as well as any abnormalities such as residual albumen, malpositions or excessive urates. Overall it was determined that turning at 15Ã‚Â° was not suitable for hatchability and results were noted similar to those reported by other authors that did not turn eggs during incubation. Turning 30Ã‚Â° is not as harmful as turning 15Ã‚Â°, but not as adequate as turning 45Ã‚Â°. Increasing the frequency of turning 15Ã‚Â° to three times an hour alleviated some of the detrimental effects of turning 15Ã‚Â° once an hour, but was still not as successful as 45Ã‚Â°. Turning 35Ã‚Â° and 40Ã‚Â° did not affect hatchability and embryonic mortality significantly. Shaking, or agitation, of the egg was attempted in a series of trials where the speed, frequency, and duration of shaking were manipulated to determine a combination that would be suitable for incubation in the industry. Eggs from prime age broiler breeder flocks were used for the four trials. Two similar machines were utilized; one that turns eggs conventionally (turns) and a modified incubator that moves eggs through a 4.5cm distance (shakes). Eggs were shaken intermittently either the entire incubation period or during parts and then turned. A control group of turned eggs were included in each trial for comparison. Overall, it was determined that shaking agitation did not produce suitable for hatch of fertile for industry use. Turning eggs at least d1-3 of incubation provides a better hatch of fertile than shaking eggs throughout incubation. ▼ This thesis focuses on early modern Barbary captivity narratives which describe Christian encounters with the Islamic world, and gives particular attention to questions of sexuality and gender. From the short fledgling narratives written in the late sixteenth century to the more detailed accounts of the seventeenth century and extending the chronological framework to incorporate the first Barbary captivity narrative written by a woman in 1769 the thesis investigates the differences between male and female experiences of captivity and conversion, and in the public articulation of those experiences. It examines the complex relationship between truth and fiction in the narratives and how it changes over time. It looks at how early modern identity was articulated in print, how it might be transformed and what was at stake in that transformation. It investigates how conversion to Islam, known colloquially as ‘turning Turk’, was imagined and highlights the role of equivocation in conversion. I suggest that turning Turk was conceived not only as a spiritual conversion but as a physical transformation with sexual overtones. In the popular imagination, conversion to Islam damned the Christian soul and contaminated the body with permanent marks like circumcision and irreversible acts like sodomy and, for women captives, the loss of virginity. Chapter one provides an overview of how Islam was imagined and considers the pervasive fear that Muslims were intent on converting the whole world to ‘Turcism’, not only with their military strength but with the allure of their faith. The second chapter examines the cultural preoccupation with circumcision. The act of changing faith was confounded by an element of mystery surrounding the sexual dimension of circumcision. It was associated with emasculation, sexual violation or becoming a eunuch. Chapter three probes this association and examines how allegations of sodomy and sexual deviance attached to captives and renegades. Captivity narratives reveal anxieties about the penetration and defilement of Christian men by Muslim sodomites. Chapters four and five concentrate on women and maintain the focus on issues of sexuality. The temptation to forsake one’s religion and embrace Islam was embodied by exaggerated images of irresistible harem women. Simultaneously, reports of chaste Christian virgins enslaved in harems and forced to convert by lustful masters were widespread. Chapter five explores the experience of female captivity by analysing the narrative of Elizabeth Marsh, the first Barbary captivity narrative written by a woman captive in the period. Baigiamojo darbo tikslas - identifikavus egzistuojančių ekonomikos ciklo posūkio taškų prognozavimo metodų silpnybes bei nustačius metodų tobulinimo kryptis, pateikti metodą, kuris bet dalinai pašalintų įvardintus trūkumus ir jį patikrinti. Teorinės darbo dalies tikslas – įrodyti ciklo posūkio taškų prognozavimo metodų tobulinimo būtinumą, todėl čia analizuojama ekonomikos ciklo posūkio taškų problematika bei platesnis jos kontekstas – ciklų teorija, kartu teoriškai aprašomi ciklo posūkio taškų prognozavimo metodai. Analitinės baigiamojo darbo dalies tikslas – pateikti naujų ciklo posūkio taškų prognozavimo priemonių metodiką bei aprašyti metodikos patikimumo įvertinimo priemones. Projektinėje darbo dalyje suformuluoti tokie sprendimai: rekomenduojama vystyti pasiūlytą ūkio produktyvumo indikatorių bei siūloma toliau tobulinti makro-ekonometrinius modelius, skirtus ciklo posūkio taškų prognozavimui, jų paprastinimo kryptimi, tačiau nepakenkiant prognostiniam efektyvumui.

The purpose of final paper is to suggest the method for business cycle turning point prediction that at least partly would solve some problems of the alternative methods and to check its effectiveness comparing to the existing methods. The first part is dedicated to the problem identification and here the cycle turning points’ problem is discussed within its wider context - business cycle theory itself, as well as the predicting methods of turning points are theoretically described. The second part of the paper is dedicated to provide the methodological aspects of the research The methodology of the proposed methods is described here, as well as the methods to evaluate it. In the third part of the paper the solutions are exposed: it is recommended to develop the proposed business cycle indicator and, finally, the development of macro econometric models in simplifying sense is proposed.
