En av de främsta prioriteringarna vid utveckling av mjukvara till tunga lastbilar på Scania är att verifiera att lastbilens beteende är säkert. Således spenderas mycket tid på säkerhetstester vars syfte är att verifiera att ny mjukvara inte medför säkerhetskritiska förändringar i fordonets beteende. De säkerhetstester som behandlas i rapporten testar beteendet av mjukvaran i motorns styrenhet när den utsätts för elektriska fel. Bakgrunden till varför säkerhetstesterna genomförs beskrivs i ett säkerhetskritiskt och juridiskt perspektiv samt vilken testmetodik som används. Dessutom tydliggörs vilken del av utvecklingsprocessen som testerna genomförs i. Slutligen utvecklas ett automatiskt testsystem för att effektivisera samt höja kvalitén av säkerhetstesterna som genomförs på Scania. De elektriska fel som kan induceras med det automatiska testsystemet är kortslutning avstyrenhetens kablage mot lastbilens batteri samt kabelbrott. Resultaten ifrån tester genomförda på det automatiska testsystemet visar att säkerhetstesterna utförda manuellt respektive automatiskt är ekvivalenta. Vidare så minskar exekveringstiden för ett testfall signifikant samt att valideringsmöjligheterna förbättras genom bättre dokumentation och ökad repeterbarhet.

In the development of software for heavy-duty trucks at Scania one of the main priorities is to ensure that the behavior of the truck is safe. Hence, much time is spent on safety tests where the purpose is to verify that new software does not imply safety critical changes in the behavior of the vehicle. The safety tests treated in this thesis are about testing the reliability of thesoftware in the electronic control unit while it is exposed to electrical malfunctions.The background of why the safety tests are performed is describedin a legal and safety critical perspective and also what test methodology thatis used. Further the phase in which the safety tests are carried out in thedevelopment process is highlighted.Finally, an automated test system is developed for increasing the e-ciency as well as the quality of the safety tests performed at Scania. Theelectrical malfunctions that are possible to induce with the automated test system are short-circuiting to battery of the truck and disconnections. The results from the tests performed on the automated test system indicate that the safety tests that are performed manually respectively automatically are equivalent. Further, the results show that the time to perform the tests signicantly decreases and the possibility for validation is improved through better documentation and increased repeatability.

In light of the many environmental challenges that the world currently faces, new sustainable solutions are called for. The concept of autonomous heavy vehicles (AVs) is considered to be one of the next megatrends within transportation and this technology shift is predicted to improve safety and logistics as well as to cut driver costs and reduce CO2-emissions. However, from a company's perspective, technology shifts are not without risks as technical disruptions can cause core competencies to become obsolete and radical technology innovation can be fatal to a company that does not innovate its business models simultaneously. Due to the complexity and novelty of the AV technology, business model innovation within the field has been lagging behind and there is an area of uncertainty regarding how a future business model for AVs could be formulated. In order to investigate potential business models for AV applications, this study has been carried out as an exploratory case study of two industry specific applications for goods transports within confined areas at the heavy vehicle manufacturer Scania in Södertälje, Sweden. The Business Model Canvas tool developed by Osterwalder and Pigneur (2010) has been used to map the business models of these two cases with the purpose of combining them into a general model. Furthermore, four important capabilities at the company have been identified and determined as to whether they qualify as core competencies based on the criteria presented by Prahalad and Hamel (1990) and then discussed in relation to how they can be leveraged in a future business model. The findings of this study help to formulate a business model perspective for future AV goods transport applications that consists of a service-based model characterised by a focus on collaboration and value co-creation, an adaptable level of integration with the customers' systems, transfer of ownership of products to the manufacturer and a value-driven source of differentiation. Lastly, the study concludes that Lean production and modularity are two existing core competencies of Scania that could be leveraged dynamically in a future business model connected to this technology shift.

▼ This thesis is about symptom-based troubleshooting of heavy vehicles. The existing troubleshooting system at Scania is adapted to handle errors based on electronic fault codes. This means that some faults, such as mechanical faults when sensors are missing, are difficult to troubleshoot. In the thesis, a method is developed that will be a part of a symptom-based troubleshooting system which can handle all types of errors. The main objectives of the thesis are both to develop a method that can link customer symptoms with system reactions and also to develop formats for both customer symptoms and FMEA for the developed method. In the thesis, a literature study was first conducted in which troubleshooting methods and principles for the formalization of customer data were identified. The identified troubleshooting methods were Bayesian Network, Case-Based-Reasoning and Fault tree analysis. A case study was then conducted which was based on several documents for troubleshooting in gas engines and gas tanks. In the case study, data from the literature study and the empirically collected data were used to develop the final concept of the method. The case study included, among other things, semi-structured interviews to map out the existing troubleshooting process, and a workshop to choose the final concept. In order to meet the objectives of the thesis two research questions and one question linked to the case study were formulated: Research Questions: • RQ1: How is the troubleshooting process affected by the methods that can be used to link customer symptoms with system reactions in heavy vehicles? • RQ2: How can customer data and FMEA be formalized in order to be useful in the troubleshooting process of heavy vehicles? Case Study: • What kind of data is missing from Scania’s existing documentation to link customer symptoms with system reactions? The thesis resulted in a method based on two troubleshooting methods Bayesian network and Case-Based-Reasoning. The method links customer symptoms with system reactions by excluding human considerations and instead relying on previously documented cases and probabilities. A requirement for using this method is a cooperation between customer support, mechanics and development engineers. The formalization of customer symptoms in the developed method is based on what good data is for mechanics in troubleshooting contexts and what customers are capable of communicating; deviation – the customer’s description of the vehicle’s unexpected condition, position – where the customer considers the deviation to be present, context – what happened before, during and after the deviation was discovered. The conclusions that can be drawn is that it is not necessary to link customer symptoms with system reactions since the developed method allows the customer symptoms to be linked directly to the corrective actions needed. The topic of the thesis is to build physically similar systems to simulate behaviors of real-life heavy-duty vehicles using LEGO Mindstorms as hardware platform and Buckingham π theorem as theoretical basis for the parameter scaling. The thesis work includes software and hardware system design and theoretical research in order to prove a newly proposed concept: Using LEGO to build a scaled model of real-life vehicles with specific similar physical properties. To implement the work described above, scaled models were built with LEGO and a software and hardware system was developed for controlling the scaled model. Tests were performed both on real-life vehicles and scaled models. A generalized mathematical model for the vehicle was derived in order to interpret the behaviors of the vehicle in a scientific way. Then, test results of both real-life vehicles and the corresponding scaled model were compared with the mathematical model in order to investigate if they have similar behaviors. Finally it was concluded that the scaled model built with LEGO Mindstorms combined with Buckingham π theorem could calculate the speed and turning radius of the physically similar real-life vehicle with an average accuracy of 94.68% within low speed, conservatively speaking. For further investigation and research, similar research could be performed with higher speeds to generalize the conclusions and results.

Uppsatsen ämnar till att bygga ett fysiskt likvärdigt system, som simulerar beteendet av verkliga tunga fordon, med LEGO Mindstorms som hårdvaruplattform och med Buckingham П teoremet som teoretisk grund from skalning av parametrar. Arbetet inkluderar mjukvaru- och hårdvarusystemdesign samt teoretisk forskning för att kunna bevisa ett nyligen föreslaget koncept: Att använda LEGO för att bygga en skalad modell av verkliga fordon med specifika likartade fysiska egenskaper. För att implementera det ovan föreslagna arbetet, byggdes skalade modeller i LEGO samt ett kombinerat hård- och mjukvarusystem för att styra den skalade modellen. Tester utfördes på både riktiga lastbilar samt de skalade modellerna. För att kunna identifiera parametrar samt simulera och tyda fordonens beteende så adapterades en generell matematisk modell. Testresultaten för på verkliga samt motsvarande skalade modeller jämfördes med den matematiska modellen för att påvisa om beteendet är likartat. Till sist drogs slutsatsen att den skalade modellen bygg med LEGO Mindstorms och parameterskalad med hjälp av Buckingham П teoremet kunde beräkna skalningsfaktorn av hastighet samt svängradie för det fysiskt likartade fordonet med en tillförlitlighet på 94.68%, konservativt räknat. Detta gäller för låga hastigheter och som fortsatt forskning skulle en liknande studie med starkare och snabbare motorer genomföras för att generalisera slutsatserna och resultaten.

Kommande förbud mot dieseldrivna fordon planeras i flera städer runt om i världen. Alternativa bränsle som exempelvis naturgas ses som en lovande ersättning även för tunga fordon. Metan som är huvudkomponenten av naturgas har en fördelaktigt förhållande mellan väte och kol vilket gör den attraktiv för CO2-reducering. Hur som helst, bränslets låga cetantal och den höga aktiveringsenergin som krävs för att tända naturgas förutsätter tändstiftsantändning.En fördel av att använda en encylindrig motor inom forskning är möjligheten att studera fenomen utan negativa gasväxlingsinteraktioner från intilliggande cylindrar. Jämfört med en fullmotor möjliggörs även ett snabbare utbyte av motordelar samt lägre bränsleförbrukning.Fokus för detta examensarbete var genomförandet av ett flexibelt bränslesystem för en tändstiftsantänd encylindrig motor. Motorn är en tändstiftsantänd Scania 9 liters som modifieras för encylinder körning. Flexibilitet som t.ex. laddningshomogenitet, selektiv fyllning av inloppsporter och förberedelser för direktinsprutning av flytande bränsle realiserades. För enkel användning är motorn styrd av en eftermarknadsmotorstyrenhet som använder ett användarvänligt grafiskt gränssnitt för ändring av driftsparametrar. Säkerhetshänsyn vid blandning av gasformiga bränsle och luft långt innan inloppsporterna har implementerats.

Most of the fundamental research in internal combustion engines is driven by the ever-increasing stringency of emissions regulations along with the need for increased fuel economy. The proposed ban on diesel vehicles in several cities around the world combined with extensive availability, has made natural gas a promising substitute even for heavy-duty applications. The high hydrogen-to-carbon ratio of methane, the major component of natural gas, makes it attractive from an emissions reduction perspective. CO2 emissions from natural gas combustion are particularly low. However, the low cetane number and high activation energy required to ignite natural gas, requires spark-ignition.In a research setting, it is often advantageous to have a single cylinder engine. The main benefit is the ability to study phenomena without adverse interactions which multi-cylinder operation may cause. This is especially important for gas-exchange studies. Quicker replacement of parts and lower fuel consumption are secondary benefits.The focus of this thesis was the implementation of a flexible fueling system for a single cylinder spark-ignited engine. The engine is a Scania 9-liter spark-ignited engine modified for single cylinder operation. Flexibility in terms of charge homogeneity, selective intake port filling and provisions for liquid fuel direct injection have been provided. The transport sector is facing great challenges for achieving development within the Earth’s boundaries. Currently, LCA studies on heavy- and medium-duty vehicles have mainly assessed the ‘well-to-wheel’ stage and the impact category climate change. To understand the full range of environmental impacts from a truck, a holistic view needs to be adopted, to acknowledge several sustainability dimensions. The development of new vehicle technologies, such as battery electrical vehicles (BEV), the impact will mainly occur in the production and end-of-life stage, thereby it is crucial to adapt a cradle-to-grave approach in LCA. This thesis have interpret Scania’s current LCA results through normalization and weighting. The normalization and weighting methods used have been based on the planetary boundaries (PBs) and other scientific thresholds of earth’s carrying capacity. The normalised results display that considering a heavy-duty truck with diesel (B5) climate change is the major impact, but for BEV with EU electricity mix it is freshwater ecotoxicity, stratospheric ozone formation and climate change that are the main impacts to consider. For the BEV with wind electricity, it is freshwater ecotoxicity and climate change which are the major impacts. According to the weighed results, the impact on ́climate change ́ and ́fossil resource scarcity ́ are most important for diesel (B5) and considering BEV with EU mix it is the impact categories of ́climate change ́ and ́fossil resource depletion ́ followed by ́mineral resource scarcity ́. Considering BEV with wind electricity it is ́mineral resource scarcity ́ followed by ́climate change ́ and ́fossil resource scarcity ́. The weighted results also display that the impact categories, ‘human toxicity cancer’, ‘freshwater ecotoxicity’, ‘particulate matter’ and ‘water resource scarcity’ are important to consider in an LCA of a BEV. Concludingly, it is a need for future research in the area of connecting the PBs with the LCA framework. Moreover, it is a need to develop normalisation reference (NR) and weighting factors (WF) based on a company and sectorial allowances of the carrying capacity to understand a product or company’s environmental impact in absolute terms.

Within the field of heavy machinery, the driver environment and its user interface (UI) has not always been a high priority during product development. This is about to change since the user experience, especially of the driver, becomes more of a selling point. Kiruna Utility Vehicles (Kiruna UV), who manufactures slag haulers for the steel industry, has developed a new driver cabin to meet these future demands. The development has been conducted in collaboration with students at Luleå University of Technology. This master thesis aims to create a basis for the digital user interface of the Kiruna UV SH60 slag hauler. The needs of the users are very important in order to ensure a good user experience. This is why a human-centred design process was chosen for this project. Extensive research has been conducted with the drivers, mechanics, managers and manufacturer of the SH60 slag hauler. Research was conducted through field studies, where interviews, observations and eye tracking were used as the main tools.The slag hauler driver operates the vehicle in two positions, where the need for information differs. When the slag hauler is driven the driver is facing forward and in this position the slag hauler is similar to any other heavy machinery. The UI needs to display for example speed, gear and RPM. When loading or emptying slag pots, the driver turns around to manoeuvre the tipping system. In this position, information about the lockings, support legs and tipping system is the most important.Through brainstorming sessions and ideation workshops with the manufacturer and participants without connection to the slag hauler, ideas on how different types of information can be shown were generated. Ideas regarding layout of the UI were also produced. These ideas were then mapped onto four different concepts that were developed through several iterations. These were then evaluated through a survey study, a usability test and feedback sessions with slag hauler drivers, mechanics and the manufacturer.A final concept was created that accommodates all the information that is needed in order to operate and maintain the slag hauler in a safe and efficient way. That is for example speed, RPM, information about the tipping system and data from the engine, transmission and hydraulic system. The final concept contains the parts of the four previous concepts that proved to work the best in the concept evaluation. The user interface has a modern look that fits into the new driver cabin design. We have shown that the user experience of the driver and service personnel can be improved through the user interface, by adapting it to user needs. We have also shown what benefits can be achieved by using a human-centred design approach within the field of heavy machinery.

▼ Arenaprojektet startades som följd av EU-direktiv och svenska myndigheters påtryckningar att införa kilometerskatt för tunga fordon i Sverige, vilket är tänkt ersätta dagens tidsbaserade vägavgiftssystem. En grundtanke med ett införande är att en stor andel transporter sker på väg och av utlandsregistrerade fordon, det är då mer rättvist och samhällsekonomiskt att de som använder vägarna också betalar för det. Idag finns kilometerskattesystem i drift i Tyskland, Schweiz, Österrike och Tjeckien. Kilometerskatten differentieras bland annat efter antal axlar, miljöklass eller vikt och är mellan 0,12-0,67 EUR/kilometer. Förslag till ett svenskt kilometerskattesystem har arbetats fram av SWECO VBB, genom Arenaprojektet, och inkluderar fyra aktörer Användare, vgiftsförmedlare, Avgiftsupptagare och Blåljusenhet. Kilometerskattesystemet kräver att efterlevnadskontroller genomförs för att skapa ett rättvist och fungerande system. Examensarbetet syftar till att skapa ett tillvägagångssätt för visualisering av transportflöde på ett tillförlitligt sätt. En grundlig kartläggning över hur transporterna fördelas på det svenska vägnätet har utförts och utfaller i en transportmodell. Transportmodellen ska användas som indata i ett tillvägagångssätt vid placering av mobila kontrollstationer för efterlevnadskontroll. De fem stegen i tillvägagångssättet representerar delar som bör ingå för att på ett tillförlitligt sätt kunna placera ut kontrollerna. Steg 1 - Skapa en OD-matris bestämmer detaljeringsnivån på OD-matrisen, det vill säga antal OD-par, länkar och noder. En kostnadsparameter för varje länk krävs för att bestämma vilka länkar som är mest lämpliga att användas för de olika rutterna. I steg 2 - Implementering av data sker inmatning av insamlad data i transportmodellen, här krävs att indata är i form av rutt- och länkflöde. Steg 3 - Kalibrering utförs med hjälp av ytterligare data för att uppnå en mer tillförlitlig transportmodell. Insamlad data bör vara av hög precision. I steg 4 - Jämför resultat hämtas utdata från transportmodellen, vilka jämförs med inrapporterad data från Avgiftsförmedlaren för att identifiera stora avvikelser. Sista steget - Rikta kontroll innebär att mobila kontroller utplaceras i områden med stora avvikelser. Indata till transportmodellen kan vara information ifrån till exempel slangmätningar, resvaneundersökningar, trafiksäkerhetskameror eller färdskrivare. Idag finns dock bara data för implementering i form av slangmätningar och resvaneundersökningar. Ett avgränsat exempelområde valde att studeras på grund av saknad indata och den stora rbetsbelastningen över att skapa en transportmodell för hela Sverige. Vid en verifiering erhölls de svar och beteenden som väntades, vilket tyder på att modellen uppför sig korrekt.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare the legal requirements for Euro VI and CARB regarding OBD certification in order to identify the challenges that may come for a manufacturer’s move from Euro VI classified heavy-duty engines to engines that meet the requirements of CARB. Furthermore, the study also aims to identify the effects that these challenges will have on the organisation. Research question: What type of challenges arise for a manufacturing company when developing an OBD certification process according to the requirements from CARB compared to Euro VI and how do these challenges affect the organisation? Method: The nature of this study was qualitative with a deductive method as an approach, where theories and empirical findings interacts. The theoretical framework is divided into two parts, in which the first part is obtained from scientific articles and books and the second part from legislations. The empirical data was gathered from interviews at a case study company and the information was thematically analysed. Conclusion: This study concludes that the movement from Euro VI to CARB standards will result in comprehensive changes for a company’s OBD process itself as well as organisational changes within the company. There will be a need to establish new processes and new ways of working within the organisation which can lead to comprehensive coordination difficulties that should be taken into consideration. In conclusion, it is as important to consider the effects of the changes that this movement will bring on the company and the actors within, as it is with the implementation of the process itself.

Syfte: Syftet med denna studie är att jämföra lagkraven för Euro VI och CARB angående OBD certifieringen och därmed identifiera de utmaningar som kan uppstå i och med övergången från Euro VI klassificerade motorer till motorer som uppfyller kraven från CARB. The transport sector is currently facing challenges to reduce environmental impacts during the vehicle’s operation due to its reliance on fossil fuels. The introduction of new technologies such as alternative fuels or battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are therefore rapidly growing because they can significantly reduce the vehicle’s tailpipe emissions. There is however the concern that these could transfer environmental burdens to other life cycle phases such as production. Therefore, a development towards sustainable transport will require more than just the development of alternative fuels or EVs, but also a more sustainable production. Considering that 80% of the product related environmental impacts are determined during the design phase of a product, the significance of product design is studied. Scania offers the opportunity to customize trucks with a high level of detail through customized design, also called S-order design. Design engineers want to know if their customized solutions have the potential to reduce environmental impacts within the production of a truck. Therefore, the life cycle assessment (LCA) framework is used to know the environmental impacts of a truck designed with S- and A-order design and to compare them in order to determine if there is an environmental performance difference between these two designs. The results show that the production of a truck with a S-order design has on average 3% lower environmental impacts on all impact categories than when it’s produced with an A-order design. This is due to the S-order design’s great level of flexibility to consider small details of the truck’s functionality. Nevertheless, this design flexibility can lead to multiple configurations for one truck, thus meaning that the results will vary from product to product since the customer decides the specifications of the truck. The main conclusion is that the early implementation of adaptations through S-order design in heavy truck development at Scania can potentially reduce resource consumption and environmental impacts, and aid to sustainable production.

▼ En brand i en gruva skiljer sig åt jämfört med en brand i en byggnad. Vid brand i en undermarksanläggning uppstår ett omedelbart hot mot de människor som vistas där. Vid en gruvbrand påverkar faktorer såsom sikt, obefintligt dagsljusinsläpp och begränsade utrymningsmöjligheter. Händelserna vid en brand kan också orsaka kostsamma driftstopp i gruvproduktionen. Det finns även en tydlig skillnad i problematik vid räddningsinsatser. Vid en gruvbrand måste räddningstjänsten exempelvis beakta långa inträngningsvägar, begränsade ventilationsmöjligheter, risken för ras och osäker brandvattenförsörjning. Under de senaste tio åren har det inträffat i snitt 70 bränder per år i svenska gruvor, varav cirka hälften varit fordonsrelaterade. Idag installeras därför släcksystem i gruvfordon i syfte att försöka minimera den typen av bränder. För att kartlägga användandet och erfarenheterna av fordonssläcksystem samt undersöka vilka framtida behov som finns gällande gruvfordons släcksystem och regelverken inom ämnesområdet genomfördes denna förstudie i samråd med RISE. Förstudien baseras på semi-strukturerade intervjuer med respondenter som valts ut utifrån deras kunskap inom bränder i underjordsgruvor och släcksystem. Även statistik från Gruvindustrins arbetsmiljökommitté gällande bränder i gruvfordon sammanställdes och studerades. I intervjustudien framgår det att effektiviteten på dagens släcksystem är montörsberoende och att det finns anledning till att konkretisera regelverken och specificera hur släcksystemen bör optimeras. Studien pekar på att effektiviteten hos släcksystem bland annat påverkas av luftflöden, mekanisk påverkan och bristfällig skötsel av systemen. Flera respondenter poängterar även att mängden släckmedelsvätska som används i dagens system måste verifieras gentemot respektive gruvfordons riskprofil. Det finns också en tydlig problematik i verkställandet och noggrannheten av kontroll och underhåll av släcksystemen och respondenterna är eniga om att en förbättring är nödvändig. Studien visar att ett av de regelverk som tillämpas för släcksystem på fordon i gruvor i Sverige, SBF 127:16, inte beaktar problematiken med bränder i undermarksanläggningar. Det framgår även att de provningarna som genomförs på släcksystem delvis är baserade på information ifrån tidigt 90-tal. Vid verkställande av framtida regelverk bör större hänsyn tas till gruvindustrins specifika behov. År 2018 finns det även en osäkerhet kring fordonssläcksystemens prestanda. Gruvindustrin önskar släcksystem med tillhörande regelverk som är optimerade efter deras behov gällande fordon och miljö.

▼ An operating vehicle requires energy to oppose the subjected driving resistances. This energy is supplied via the fuel combustion in the engine. Decreasing the opposing driving resistances for an operating vehicle increases its fuel efficiency: an effect which is highly valued in today’s industry, both from an environmental and economical point of view. Therefore a lot of progress has been made during recent years in the area of fuel efficient vehicles, even though some driving resistances still rises perplexity. These resistances are the air drag F_d generated by the viscous air opposing the vehicles propulsion and the rolling resistance F_rr generated mainly by the hysteresis caused by the deformation cycle of the viscoelastic pneumatic tires. The energy losses associated with the air drag and rolling resistance account for the majority of the driving resistances facing an operating vehicle, and depends on numerous stochastic and ambient parameters, some of which are highly correlated both within and between the two resistances. To increase the understanding of the driving mechanics behind the energy losses associated with the complexity that is rolling resistance, a set of complete vehicle tests has been carried out. These tests were carried out on the test track Malmby Fairground, using a Scania CV AB developed R440 truck equipped with various sensors connected in one measurement system. Under certain conditions, these parameters can allow for an investigation of the rolling resistance, and a separation of the rolling resistance and air drag via explicit subtraction of the air drag from the measured traction force. This method is possible since the aerodynamic property A_HDVC_d(β) to some extent can be generated from wind tunnel tests and CFD simulations. Two measurement series that enable the above formulated method of separation were designed and carried out, using two separate measurement methods. One which enables the investigation of the transient nature of rolling resistance as it strives for stationarity, where the vehicle is operated under constant velocities i.e. no acceleration, and one using the well established method of coastdown, where no driving torque is applied. The drive cycles spanned a range of velocities, which allowed for dynamic and stationary analyses of both the tire temperature- and the velocity dependence of rolling resistance. When analysing the results of the transient analysis, a strong dependence upon tire temperature for given constant low velocity i.e. v ≤ 60 kmh⁻¹ was clearly visible. The indicated dependency showed that the rolling resistance decreased as the tire temperature increased over time at a given velocity, and vice versa, towards a stationary temperature and thereby rolling resistance.
