During the winters in recent years Laholmsbuktens VA's treatment plant in Halmstad has recorded unexcepted levels of phosphorus from the polishing pond. Only between 8 and 20 January 2016 samples indicates a realese of net 75 kg. In winter the pond temperature never goes below about 8oC, which attracts wintering waterfowl. In February 19, 2016 the largest number of birds in the inventory for this thesis was noted, 325 individuals, of which 208 were tufted ducks.  Even if the number of waterfowl at peak levels was to be about 1000 individuals, their combined contribution of phosphorus through droppings into the pond could not be more than 500 g per day. This study proposes that a significant factor is the foraging activity of tufted ducks, which are diving ducks. In search of food at daytime they disturb the sediment at the bottom of the pond, i.e bioturbation.  The higher proportion of particle-bound phosphorus in samples with high phosphorus content also fits well with this hypothesis. A scientific investigation in which the bottom of this part of the pond was stirred up mechanically gave similar proportions between phosphorus and water-soluble phosphorus.

Genominės DNR metodas naudotas dryžagalvių kryklių (A.querquedula) ir kuoduotųjų ančių (A.fuligula) skirtingų populiacijų tyrimams. Šio darbo tikslas įvertinti vidurūšinę genetinę įvairovę ir biogeografinius ryšius tarp dviejų ančių rūšių naudojant atsitiktinius pradmenis. Pavyzdžiai (kraujo/širdies/kepenų/plunksnų) dviejų ančių rūšių (52 kuoduotųjų ančių ir 63 dryžagalvių kryklių) surinkti Latvijoje, Kalinigrade, Rusijos Novgorodo regione, pietų ir vakarų Baltarusijoje. 39 dryžagalvių kryklių pavyzdžiai surinkti Senegale. DNR skyrimas atliktas pagal Aljanabi ir Martinez (1997) metodiką. Išskirti DNR pavyzdžiai naudoti genominės DNR fragmentų amplifikacijai Vienos PGR reakcijos galutinis tūris 25 μl ( 20 μl Mix + 5 μl DNR ). DNR fragmentų padauginimui parinkta tinkamiausia anilinimo temperatūra-36OC, ciklas vyko 45s. PGR produktai frakcionuoti horizontaliame 1.7 % agarozės gelyje. Kompiuterinės programos Total Lab v1.10 (v. 2) naudota įvertinti tikslų DNR fragmentų skaičių ir ilgį (bp) ir GenAlEx (v. 6.) (Peakall ir Smouse, 2006) naudota nustatyti pradmenų tinkamumą vidurūšinei ir tarprūšinei analizei. Genetinės įvairovės molekulinė analizė (AMOVA) atlikta naudojant GenAlEx (v.6.). Naudojant AAPD (atsitiktinai amplifikuotą polimorfinę DNR) buvo vertinta genetinė įvairovė tarp dviejų ančių rūšių populiacijų. Genomic DNA was used for investigation of different populations of Garganey (A.querquedula) and Tufted Duck (A. fuligula). The aim of this study was to define intraspecific genetic diversity and biogeographic relationships among two duck species using random primers. Specimens(blood/heart/liver/feather) of two duck species (52 Tufted Ducks and 63 Garganeys) were collected in Latvia, Kaliningrad, Novgorod region of Russia, and eastern and western Belarus. 39 Garganeys specimens were collected in Senegal.Extraction of DNA was carried according to Aljanabi and Martinez (1997). Extracted DNA samples were used for amplification of fragments of genomic DNA of Garganey and Tufted ducks. The PCR was carried out in a final volume of 25 µl consisting of (20 μl Mix, and 5 μl genomic DNA). In the polymerase chain reaction six random primers (ol-1, ol-2, ol-9, ol–10, ol–11, ol-12 ) were used. Amplification of DNA fragments was selected availability annealing temperature-36OC for 45s. The PCR product was checked in 1.7 % agarosis gel. The computer programs Total Lab v1.10 (version 2) was used to estimate exact numbers and length (bp) of DNA fragments, and GenAlEx (version 6.) Citizen science offers a potentially powerful tool for the environmental scientist to access large data sets over increasingly greater time scales. Given the ease of which information can be reported or shared online and the increase in community interest there is an overwhelming amount of data available. But two major questions remain; is the data reliable and how is it best used? This study addresses the first question by testing the ability of such data from Artportalen, Sweden’s Species Gateway for reporting observations of birds (and other flora and fauna), to reflect patterns in the presence and absence of breeding records of Tufted Duck (Aythya fuligula) and Eurasian Teal (Annas crecca). This was done by undertaking wetland assessments in a set of constructed wetland sites from Artportalen in Halland, Southern Sweden, with breeding records of the target species. A literature review was also undertaken to explore the existing ecological knowledge of breeding habitat requirements for each species. Physical and biological characteristics from the wetlands visited were then qualitatively compared to the existing ecological knowledge for each species’ preferred breeding habitat. This method resulted in some support for the reliability of this particular Citizen Science data, in that it reflected Tufted Duck’s preference to breed in wetlands closer to the coast, that provided some form of cover or screening around the edges and which had a large proportion of their shoreline bordered by tall emergent vegetation. Conversely, it reflected Eurasian Teal’s preference for inland wetlands that were closer to relatively open natural freshwater bodies, where tall emergent vegetation wasn’t as abundant. How this and other Citizen Science data can be used in the design and management of constructed wetlands for conservation purposes in light of these results is then discussed.
