▼ O processo de socialidade no Brasil encontra-se submetido a uma rígida administração de política econômica, ou melhor, macroeconômica, segundo a qual, segue às exigências impostas pelo capital liberalizado (neomonetarismo). Entendemos não se tratar de uma conjuntura regional ou uma prerrogativa aplicada exclusivamente a um ou outro país. Hoje, esse conceito pelo qual o poder estatal administra sua sociedade encontra-se na órbita universal, contudo, podemos destacar que há uma maior acentuação em países cujo desenvolvimento econômico são considerados emergentes ou em desenvolvimento. Esta circunstância que preferimos chamá-la durante esse trabalho por vários pseudônimos como: neoliberalismo, neomonetarismo ou neocapitalismo; tem o escopo de explorar excessivamente o dinheiro nesses países objetivando acumular apenas por mais dinheiro. Nesse contexto o processo de produção segundo o qual responsabiliza-se pela empregabilidade e conseqüentemente pela distribuição da renda na sociedade nacional se encontra estagnado. Por isso, que o Produto Interno Bruto no país tem se retraído demonstrando níveis pífios de desenvolvimento econômico. Corroborando com a estabilidade dos mercados para não dispersar uma fuga dos neomonetaristas, o poder estatal emprega coercibilidade na condução da política macroeconômica nacional. Os sustentáculos para uma duração pacífica com os neocapitalistas (estrangeiro ou nacional), estão à égide da manutenção da liberalidade de aplicação de taxas de juros extremamente altas no mercado consumidor de dinheiro (empréstimos no varejo); e por conta da sustentação de uma continuada valorização da moeda nacional frente ao dólar. Daí decorrem alguns efeitos que serão destacados e criticados nesse trabalho. O primeiro importante resultado desse processo está na atual concepção da ordem jurídica. Entendemos que o jurista nacional por conta do domínio neocapitalista foi suplantado por doutrinadores econômicos cuja finalidade é confeccionar Leis financeiras para garantir a hegemonização da monetarização na ordem econômica nacional. O segundo extraordinário efeito denota-se a luz da supressividade da dignidade da pessoa humana. O foco dessa exploração encontra precipuamente dois fragilizados membros da sociedade nacional. O primeiro é o idoso subvencionado, e o segundo é o trabalhador (com registro fixo em sua carteira de trabalho CNT). Ambos contém duas preciosas condições que enchem de alegria os olhos dos neomonetaristas. A primeira é a inegável necessidade que têm de contrair empréstimos financeiros para com esses recursos minimizarem o déficit de seu custeio social; e a segunda é a garantia do adimplemento obrigacional (cumprimento das prestações pecuniárias) junto à sociedade de crédito e financiamento por conta do desconto das prestações serem feitas diretamente na fonte pagadora do seu benefício ou salário. ▼ Public sector across the globe is currently experiencing a decline in public trust and this issue has been widely discussed across the globe. While working as a fundraiser in summer 2018, the author discovered that charities are struggling to recruit and keep their regular donors. Donations from general people are one of the main sources of charity funding. Individuals who donate to charities do not receive a direct benefit in exchange for their support to charities. Moreover, they don’t have all the necessary information, on which they can decide to donate. Trust is what facilitates the transactions between charities and donors in such a situation. Some studies, for instance by the European Fundraising Association shows that the number of donors in Finland and Sweden has declined. But research on public trust in Finland and Sweden is scarce. There is a gap in comprehensive studies of public trust in charities in Finland and Sweden. The key research aim of this thesis is to examine the level of public trust in Charities in Finland and Sweden. This thesis aims to answer the question "how is the situation of public trust in the charity sector in Finland and Sweden?" To answer the research questions two separate surveys were conducted to observe situation of public trust in Finnish and Swedish charity sectors. Another two separate surveys were conducted to observe the level of public trust in Greenpeace Finland (experiencing a decline in donor numbers) and Finnish Red Cross (experiencing growth in donor numbers) and its effects. Interviews were conducted with fundraising manager of Finish Red Cross and Greenpeace Finland, and annual reports of these organizations were also analyzed in this thesis. Quantitative descriptive analysis of survey data and content analysis of qualitative interview data were done. Three main points can be highlighted in this thesis. First, public trust in charity sector in Finland Sweden is in satisfactory level, which also means that there is room for improvements. Second, public trust is important for donors while making donation decisions and administrative efficiency, transparency and accountability are main determinants of their trust towards a charity organization. And the third, public trust is not the sole reason that determines the growth in donation collection in the charity organizations.

▼ Three essays compose this dissertation. The first essay is an empirical investigation of the origins of social trust. I examine how, over the course of history, exposure to climatic risk has influenced the returns to cooperation favoring the emergence of norms of mutual trust that have persisted until today. My empirical analysis, which combines climate data for the period 1500-2000 with contemporary survey data at the sub-national level, supports this hypothesis: regions historically characterized by higher year-to-year climatic variability and more spatially heterogeneous weather display higher trust. Variation in trust is driven by weather patterns during the growing season and by historical rather than recent variability. These results are robust to the inclusion of country fixed-effects, a variety of geographical controls, and regional measures of early politico-economic development.In the second essay I use data from Italy to investigate the effect of media ownership on news content and to examine how viewers respond to changes in partisan bias in media news. I document that after the 2001 national elections, when the control of the government passed from the center-left to the center-right coalition, news content on public television shifted to the right. Using individual survey data, I find robust evidence that viewers responded to these changes by modifying their choice of news programs and their level of confidence in news sources. I document that these behavioral responses significantly, though only partially, offset the movement of public news content to the right.The third essay is a study of the determinants of individual support for redistributions based on the results of laboratory experiments in which a large number of subjects choose are asked to perform redistributive choices under different experimental conditions. My results suggest that: a) most subjects favor a more equal distribution among others; b) support for redistribution is sensitive to the cost of taxation and to the deadweight loss associated with it; c) subjects support less redistribution when the initial distribution is determined according to task performance. The last effect is much larger for males than for females and accounts for most of the gender-based difference in redistributive choices. As the use of e-commerce websites continues to increase, and with cybercrime on the rise, trust in a website has become an important issue. Hence, online stores invest time, money and effort in their website design; they must design websites in a manner that creates a strong bond of trust between consumer and retailer. This thesis examines the relationship between web design features and trust while taking into consideration the cost of the items. Web design features were considered and classified into 5 dimensions: (1) Graphic Design, (2) Structural Design (3) Content Design (4) Social Cue Design and (5) Perceived Security. Three methods were used to study this relationship. The first was an online survey of the features of websites that generated trust. The survey specifically addressed the issue of item cost. The second was an experimental manipulation of web design features and item cost. Participants were asked to directly contrast four different website designs so to determine which features matter more to trust. Item cost was an explicit part of the manipulation, comparing the same websites promoting an expensive and an inexpensive item. The final task was a structured interview. Generally, it was found that different features did affect trust. Features that fell within the category of graphic design dimension were the least important while features classified as content design dimension were the most important. However, features from every category mattered. The effect of item price was more ambiguous, but some features mattered more for inexpensive items (a convenient layout for fast product selection) whereas other features tended to be more important for expensive items (i.e., product information and detail). This study also discovered (through the interview primarily) that interactivity in a website is a relatively new feature that has an affect on consumer trust. The type of interactivity varied as a function of item cost.

▼ While mobile payments have been adopted by a huge number of businesses, the body of knowledge regarding user trust in mobile payments shows that trust is a major issue in its adoption and development. The purpose of this study was to better understand the factors that influence consumer trust in mobile payments in one significant country in this region; The United Arab Emirates (UAE) as the research region. The UAE is one of the leading economies in the Middle East Arab region, and mobile technology is well advanced and widely utilised. An analysis of relevant literature provided the basis for the development of a conceptual model. The model, classified into five logical groups (consumer characteristics, environmental influences, provider characteristics, perceived risks and mobile-device characteristics), was further explored, validated, extended and tested through a mixed-method methodology, combining both qualitative (phase one) and quantitative (phase two) approaches, with semi-structured interviewing in exploratory focus groups and an online survey being used respectively. The findings of the qualitative phase were used to clarify the appropriateness of the preliminary Consumer Trust in Mobile Payments (CTMP) model, which was accordingly revised and extended. The second phase (the quantitative approach) was based on a survey of 340 respondents in the UAE. The collected data were analysed by using Structural Equation Modelling with the Partial Least Squares (PLS-SEM) approach. Many of the factors in the qualitative CTMP model were successfully validated and statistically significant. The resulting, quantitatively weighted CTMP model shows that users‟ awareness and provider‟s trustworthiness are the most positive influential factor, followed by perceive security levels and device-design suitability. Customers‟ uncertainty avoidance, on the other hand, is the most negatively influential factor on trust, followed by perceived privacy risks associated with m-payments. The model contributes towards better acceptance and usage of mobile payments. ▼ Trust is an essential component of any interpersonal relationship, but it is particularly integral to the patient-physician relationship. Patient-physician trust increases willingness to seek treatment, disclose sensitive information, adhere to medical recommendations, and share decision-making authority. While there have been developments in current research on the psychosocial variables associated with patient-physician trust, there continues to be the need for a psychometrically sound measure of trust, as well as a further need for psychometric evaluation of already developed measures. The purpose of the study was to reexamine a measure of patient-physician trust, the Wake Forest Physician Trust Scale (WFPTS), using more properly selected measures to obtain convergent and discriminant validity evidence as well as reliability evidence. Although the WFPTS was chosen due to its appropriate and comprehensive scale development process, construct validity evidence with an adult population was questionable and there was no reported validity and/or reliability evidence for an older adult population. Three hundred and forty English-speaking, community-dwelling adults were recruited to participate in this study. Data was collected with the WFPTS and measures of trustworthiness, patient satisfaction, decision-making, health locus of control, confidentiality, health, personality traits, and physician empathy to gather validity evidence for the WFPTS with adult and older adult samples. Measures of internal consistency also were obtained. Scores of the WFPTS exhibited satisfactory internal consistency and good convergent validity with significant, moderate to strong correlations with both the young adult and older adult samples. Discriminant validity evidence was also demonstrated with each age group based on weak relations with a measure of openness to experience. Findings from this study provide support for the psychometric properties of the WFPTS with young and older adult populations. These results also confirm the validity of data obtained with the WFPTS with young adults and provide support for the use of this instrument with older adults. ▼ Business to business trust is topical, and the decision to outsource noncore professional services is gaining momentum. This study sought to understand the role of trust in the selection of a first time professional services provider. Through a review of the literature, the study built a model of six trust dimensions in the business to business space, structured by two factors - Trust and Reliance. Using non probability sampling, decision makers and influencers across heterogeneous companies and industries were surveyed through a web based, self completed questionnaire. Using 157 responses, the model was tested in terms of its components (trust dimensions, grouped into the two factors) and outcomes (the relationship between the trust dimensions, Global Trust, and the trust factors on first time Purchase Intent). Little proof was found for the proposed model, from a six dimensions or two factors perspective. Revealed by the data, however, was a new two factor solution – Earned trust (trust based on past performance) and Expected trust (trust derived from the expectation of performance going forward). Global Trust was found to have a significant relationship with Purchase Intent; Interpersonal trust was found to be the most prominent dimension influencing the buying decision; and Expected Trust was revealed as the most influential and valid individual factor. Key limitations include the single item Purchase Intent scale; the heterogeneous sample in terms of industry and company size; the specialisation of the sample to the purchasing of small business management and consulting projects and the cross sectional nature of the research. Going forward this would imply the need to source a multi itemed Purchase Intent scale to strengthen the scale’s degree of validity, accuracy, and reliability; explore the trust and Purchase Intent relationship in both small and large companies and from an industry specific perspective; investigate more fully the business management and consulting skills service subset; and test for the respective importance of Earned versus Expected trust in relation to Purchase Intent across the phases of relationship development. The study offers empirical proof for the relationship between Global Trust and Purchase Intent in professional services and for the importance of interpersonal relationships in this space. Most importantly, it lays the foundation of construct validity for the more comprehensive trust scale of Earned and Expected trust. From a business perspective, findings of this study infer that in order to present as an attractive partner, providers must invest their energy in sharing past performance and track record in order to reduce buyer uncertainty; and must spend considerably more effort in creating confident expectations about how performance and goodwill will be guaranteed going forward. Prioritisation of efforts should be on building the perception among potential buyers of the expertise and integrity of the professionals within the supplier organisation. Trust is considered to be cornerstone of patient-psychotherapist interaction, therefore lack of trust into Ubiquitous Healthcare (UH) environments oriented on anxiety disorders affects quality of delivered services. To meet that challenge is proposed trust to be taken into consideration as key-factor on selection of UH Provider when a UH service is requested. This accomplished via a Trust Management System (TMS) that foresight trustworthiness of UH Providers on the basis of requestor’s Personal Interaction Experience (PIE) and Reputation as calculated by his/her group therapy partners’. Under the perspective of accurate trustworthiness estimation as well as robust against malicious attacks affecting Reputaion, TMS internal mechanisms are proposed to be mathematically modeled on the basis of Cloud Theory. Essentially, Cloud Theory permits TMS to be modeled into fuzzy-probabilistic terms on a basis of a linguistic reasoning. Furthermore, the exploitation of Cloud Theory permits PIE and Reputation to be modeled by Cloud that facilitate their eigen-features to be expressed. Both simulation and experimental cooperative study confirm the proposed TMS outperformance within clean environment and under malicious attacks even the more complex.

▼ The main research problem in this study was to identify what trust-building strategies can be utilised by organisations to enhance collective bargaining processes. To achieve this objective a theoretical Institutional Arrangements-Based Model of trust-building was conceptualised, developed and presented in Chapter 5. The presentation of this model was the culmination of the research design phases outlined below: -The first phase consisted of a literature survey undertaken to discover the nature and dynamics of the concept "trust". -The second phase consisted of surveying the literature attempting to understand the nature of the collective bargaining process, its elements and types and the environmental factors that tend to impinge on it. -The final phase of the literature survey focused on various trust-building strategies, theories and models that can be utilised by organisations to ii enhance collective bargaining processes. Trust is generally acknowledged as a necessary requirement for effective and successful workplace relationships. Because of this factor it is crucial that South African employer-employee relationships are improved in a conscious and sustainable way in order for our businesses to remain competitive in the face of global competition. With this reality in mind there is still much in the South African labour relations environment that fosters conflict. One of the primary factors that impinge on trust in employer-employee relations in South Africa is the previous government‘s divisive and racist apartheid policies. These policies have resulted in serious structural imbalances in the economy, the skewed distribution of wealth and the general scarcity of resources to address these attendant challenges. Finnemore and van Rensburg (2002, p. 36) surveys the current labour relations scenario and comments about the extent to which it has been severely affected by apartheid. Some of its appalling outcomes are: racial divisions between skilled and unskilled workers, apartheid wage gaps, poorly educated workers, dictatorial management styles and a lack of protection for the most vulnerable workers. As revealed in this research study there are still widely divergent views at the workplace regarding the nature and levels of trust that are prevalent. The overwhelming view, however, is that there is, generally, a lack of trust between managerial and employee collective bargaining teams. This lack of trust which is evident between employer and employee parties will tend to result in collective bargaining processes being embarked upon in a climate imbued with the negative spirit of distrust. The recommended Institutional Arrangements-Based Model of trust-building advocates for a process of trust-building prior to any collective bargaining initiatives. This process, as depicted in the elements of the recommended model, needs to begin with phases which will focus on frame-alignment and the identification of all sources of distrust between the parties. This thesis aims to investigate the relationship between guanxi, trust, job satisfaction and work commitment in Singapore organisations. We adopted a model which shows how decisions are shaped by human background, self-perception, interpersonal relationships, needs beliefs and trust. The model identifies guanxi and trust as the independent variables influencing delegation (the mediator), which indirectly affects job satisfaction and work commitment (outcomes). We tested this model with data collected from a sample size of 380 participants, comprising 103 sets or pairs of matched team leaders (senior engineers-mentors) to junior engineers (followers), from a major water recycling research and development (R&D) company based in Singapore. Regression results showed that there is a positive relationship between guanxi and trust on the degree of delegation exercised by leaders. In addition, the predictive influence of guanxi and trust on job satisfaction and work commitment was fully mediated by delegation (the mediator). This finding runs parallel to the research findings conducted by Yang (2001), who suggests that the higher the quality or level of guanxi and trust in a leader to follower relationship, the higher the level of delegation exercised by a leader to his follower, which in turn produces higher level of follower’s job satisfaction and work commitment. In this thesis, Singaporean leaders are seen to categorise followers into ‘inner’ and ‘outer’ circles based on the quality of guanxi and trust in a leader-to-follower relationship. Better connected and ‘inner circle’ followers are delegated with more power and responsibilities and this in turn encourages or motivates them to exhibit more initiative and commitment towards achieving corporate goals. This is because they feel empowered, being able to make decisions that can make a difference to the company. In addition, it provides followers with a higher sense of job satisfaction and work commitment knowing the importance of their assigned tasks and the close relationship they share with their leader. The predominately ethnic Chinese Singaporean workforce has provided the cultural foundation for the influence of guanxi and trust on delegation, which in turn influences changes in work attitudes in the Singapore corporate environment.

The objective of this study is to propose a similar framework developed by Lu, Zhao & Wang (2010) on the understanding of how trust in virtual community (thereafter VC) members and trust in vendors affect actual purchasing behaviour. The proposed research is to replicate part of the study carried out by Lu et al. (2010) and extend it within the context of Business to Consumer (thereafter B2C) environment for Small and Medium enterprises (thereafter SME) in China using China’s largest Consumer to Consumer (thereafter C2C) platform, TaoBao. Since trust is a signifying factor in transactions, the study only focuses on the impact of trust in virtual community members and trust in vendors on actual purchase. In this study, a positivist approach was adopted and quantitative method was used to test the proposed hypotheses. A questionnaire was adapted from Lu et al. (2010) and Barkhi, Belanger & Hicks (2008) for online survey. Prospective buyers of internet stores of TaoBao were invited to participate in the anonymous online survey. Non probability sampling method is used for collecting the data. Four hundred and twelve valid responses were collected for this study during the research period. The purpose is to find how the online buyers’ trust in virtual community members and trust in web vendor, affects actual purchase in a B2C environment in China. This will assist businesses to make better strategic planning approaches when launching products on the internet. Results of the study support the hypothesis that only trust in member’s ability positively affects trust in vendor’s ability and vendor’s benevolence for actual purchase group. The results also support the hypothesis that trust in member’s integrity and benevolence is positively related to trust in vendor’s ability for actual purchase group. Finding further shows that only vendor’s ability trusting dimension has the effect on actual purchase and it is inconclusive for vendor’s integrity and vendor’s benevolence dimension. In addition, there seems to be no relationship between member’s ability, member’s integrity and benevolence trusting dimension on actual purchase. Detail discussion of the results, managerial implication, contributions as well as limitations and the need for future studies are included in the final chapter.

▼ Business to business trust is topical, and the decision to outsource noncore professional services is gaining momentum. This study sought to understand the role of trust in the selection of a first time professional services provider. Through a review of the literature, the study built a model of six trust dimensions in the business to business space, structured by two factors - Trust and Reliance. Using non probability sampling, decision makers and influencers across heterogeneous companies and industries were surveyed through a web based, self completed questionnaire. Using 157 responses, the model was tested in terms of its components (trust dimensions, grouped into the two factors) and outcomes (the relationship between the trust dimensions, Global Trust, and the trust factors on first time Purchase Intent). Little proof was found for the proposed model, from a six dimensions or two factors perspective. Revealed by the data, however, was a new two factor solution – Earned trust (trust based on past performance) and Expected trust (trust derived from the expectation of performance going forward). Global Trust was found to have a significant relationship with Purchase Intent; Interpersonal trust was found to be the most prominent dimension influencing the buying decision; and Expected Trust was revealed as the most influential and valid individual factor. Key limitations include the single item Purchase Intent scale; the heterogeneous sample in terms of industry and company size; the specialisation of the sample to the purchasing of small business management and consulting projects and the cross sectional nature of the research. ▼ The Internet gives patients the opportunity to be better informed, have ownership over their data, and, therefore, be empowered in the medical decision-making process. All of these new forms of patient empowerment through eHealth, however, require the patients’ trust in online service. Existing literature provides a solid foundation regarding the development of trust in social encounters. What is more, the understanding of trust related to more general online services, such as e-commerce is advanced, too. Regarding eHealth in particular, however, there are substantial gaps in the literature. What is more, all existing studies have one pitfall in common. None of them investigates trust as a reciprocal, evolving system that is based on recurring interactions between trustee and truster. Studies either focus on the individual view of the trustee or the truster but fail to analyse the potential dynamics of a trust signal and its evolution. This led me to research questions that aim to identify trust-evoking factors specific to eHealth, on the one hand, and develop an understanding of the evolution and sustainability of communication between trustee and truster. I applied a mixed-methods approach in order to answer my research questions. This allowed me to use qualitative methods to explore a variety of trust antecedents that are unique to eHealth, develop hypotheses, and then test the derived hypotheses through a quantitative study. One surprising insight of this study is that the risk perception of the overall service offer can determine the level of trust in a service even before entering the website. Risk perception proved to be a more crucial indicator of perceived trustworthiness than presence of trust signals on the website. This allows the conclusion that both researchers and policy makers should differentiate between high-risk and low-risk eHealth services instead of approaching all services under the unifying umbrella of eHealth. Another key finding is that users judge the trustworthiness of eHealth websites depending on their “fit”. For eHealth providers that means that in order to increase trust in their service they need to mimic the offline experience as much as possible.
