This thesis explores the relationship between urban planning and transport, by studying dedicated bus lanes projects in ten cities of the near Parisian suburb, a territory which has both correct accessibility to the city-centre and real estate opportunities, so that it can constitute a potential of « rebuilding the city over the city ». By studying archival documents, it traces the genesis of these dedicated bus lanes, from propositions, to negotiations, adaptations and deployments, associated with the analysis of the urban evolution of the concerned territories, during 30 years, mainly by using the land-use database from IAU-IDF. By this double approach, the research tries to understand the concept of « Transit Oriented Development » and assesses contrasted strategies of concerned cities toward these types of projects, and highlights the correlation between these strategies and city’s history and the social demographic composition. It also reveals the gap between the stated will and undertaken…

▼ This study investigates the shift from a monocentric private car-oriented city to a polycentric public transport-oriented city. In the past, metropolitan areas have suffered from traffic problems such as congestion. In many monocentric cities, congestion has steadily increased and is expected to further increase in the future. Congestion leads to problems such as air pollution, noise, longer trip distances, increased trip time, greenhouse emissions and increased stress and accident rates. Urban expansion, population growth and road network development have led to urban sprawl, and this structural shift towards urban sprawl has significantly increased traffic jams. The results indicated that planned and concentrated employment and population levels in key activity centres can deliver significant benefits by reducing travel cost and time. The findings indicated that the coordinated redistribution of housing and activity would achieve the best possible transport outcome, in terms of the number of car trips, car sharing, and car travel distance. It can also reduce travel consumption in general, including travel on public transport. The study also demonstrated the benefits in increased walking trips. Moreover, the polycentric approach would also improve accessibility to work for primary, tertiary and retail purposes by car, public transport and on foot.

IMPACTS OF FREIGHT TRANSPORT AND LAND USE STRUCTURE ON URBAN TRAFFIC AND ENVIRONMENT: THE CASE OF ADDIS ABABA

▼ Addis Ababa city entertains both inner urban goods distribution activity and cross urban freight
movements which originate from one part of the country and destined either in Addis Ababa or
crosses the city and moves to other part of the country. This frequent movement of freight
vehicles on the city streets causes significant problem in exacerbating problems like congestion,
pollution and accidents. Mismanagement and lack of knowledge on how these vehicles affect the
city also aggravates these problems and makes cities unpleasant.
In this thesis the impacts of freight transport (both inter and intra urban freights) and urban land
use structure on the overall traffic functions and urban environment were studied. This thesis
mainly focused on the case of Addis Ababa to study the causes of freight and land use related
problems, the level of their impact on the urban society and environment and develops
appropriate recommendations and possible logistics options to overcome these problems. In doing
so, main entry/exit corridors of the city were identified, main freight attraction areas of the city
were pointed out and detailed study and analysis were made on the selected intersections in the
identified freight areas. Besides these, interviews were made directly and questionnaires prepared
and data were collected from stakeholders in the freight transport industry. These data were
analyzed and its result interpreted and discussed to meet the objective of the thesis.
Accordingly, Bishoftu road is found to be the most busy entry/exit corridor of the city which
accounts for more than 75% share of freight vehicles entering and leaving the city on a daily
basis. The Akaki Kality sub city which is along this road corridor, Addis Ketema, Kolfe and Nifas
silk Lafto sub cities are some of the major areas where dominant freight mobility were observed
because of the concentration of market areas, warehouses, factories and different service
providers. The capacity analysis carried out on Akaki Kality and 18-mazoria intersections clearly
depicted that the high freight vehicular movement in these areas significantly affected the level of
service of these intersections and aggravates pollution problems of the area. The number of traffic
accidents caused by freight vehicles in the whole city of Addis Ababa has increased by 37.6% in
the past five years. However, in Akaki Kality sub city the increase in number of freight related
accidents is around 179%. The proportion (share) of number of accidents compared with other
types of vehicles in this sub city is large which is about 57.4% in the year 2011/2012.
Furthermore lack of freight management practices and poor land use structure of the city have
also contributed to the problems associated to the city traffic functions and environment. This
study identified some of the major management and traffic operation challenges which aggravates
these problems and ultimately suggested possible solutions that may alleviate these problems.

▼ There is ample evidence of the role of land use and transportation interactions in determining urban spatial structure. The new data sources introduced by increased digitization of human activity, such as Teranet’s dataset of real estate sales, offer opportunities for development of integrated urban models or studies conducting longitudinal analysis of changes in land value distributions. To facilitate this, data from various sources (Census, TTS, etc.) needs to be merged at the land parcel level to enhance datasets with additional attributes, while maintaining the ease of data storage and retrieval. In addition, accurate land use information needs to be added to Teranet records to allow separating sales data by major property types. This thesis proposes a prototype of a workflow to augment Teranet’s dataset with data from multiple sources and use machine learning to classify land use of each Teranet record based on the housing market dynamics.

By considering social, spatial and technological dimensions of people’s daily mobility, this thesis aims to develop an original environmental assessment method. In the recent years, passenger travel, as well as freight transportation, have grown significantly. Car is now the predominant mode of passenger transport and its impacts on environment, land-use planning, lifestyle and economy are well documented and at the centre of heated academic and political debates. The environmental assessment of peoples’ daily mobility requires an integrated approach to account for the transport system, but also the urban system in which it operates. In order to achieve this, this thesis introduces a method coupling two tools developed in two distinct scientific fields - land-use…

▼ Urban greenbelts are considered a key instrument for shaping sustainable urban growth and protecting the environment in a large number of cities in the world. In most cities, there is a widely shared belief that urban greenbelts are beneficial to the natural environment. By contrast, there is little understanding of the underlying economic impacts of greenbelts and other green space configurations in fast growing cities. The unprecedented rate and scale of urbanisation in the emerging economies has brought the role of greenbelts into an even sharper focus. In cities within these fast growing economies, the urban population is expected to double in the coming decades, which means that greenbelts are under great pressures to adapt to the large forthcoming growth. Few existing urban models are capable of addressing the dynamic nature of the urban transformations and predicting the impacts of urban greenbelts in the developing world. This prompts us to develop a new modelling method that is capable of assessing the impacts of different configurations, scales and locations of green spaces. We then use it to examine alternative futures to the greenbelt through a case study of Greater Beijing. The method we developed is a new variant in the land use-transport interaction (LUTI) model family. This model is capable of addressing the non-equilibrium nature of urban land use and transport development and the equilibrium nature of the day-to-day adaptations made by businesses and citizens. This LUTI model aims to answer the following questions: what are the short-term and long-term economic impacts of a greenbelt on a fast growing city? Which alternative green space configuration performs better in terms of economic well-being and travel costs? Where and how much should the greenbelt land be progressively reshaped or released as the city grows? The new LUTI model is calibrated and validated using data collected for 1990, 2000 and 2010 for Greater Beijing, The model is first tested retrospectively through revisiting the past greenbelt policies in Beijing from 1990 to 2010. Then the impacts of different future green space configurations from 2010 to 2030 are predicted and assessed through quantifying economic costs/benefits and travel costs for socio-economic groups. The model results suggest that under rapid transformative urban change, the configuration, scale and location of a greenbelt have a significant impact on a city’s economic efficiency. Such impacts will transcend the greenbelt boundary, and even the boundary of Beijing Municipality, onto the entire city region. A narrow greenbelt launched in the early age of urban expansion could lead to spatial mismatch of residents and jobs. A wide and strictly controlled ring-shaped greenbelt is not the highest performing intervention either, in terms of economic well-being. The green-wedges configuration is a remedial policy that balances the economic efficiency and environmental benefits. Intensive development around metro/rail stations in the designated greenbelt could reduce…

▼ Like many nations, Aotearoa New Zealand’s
land-
use and
transport development has prioritised planning for mobility, movement, over accessibility, access. This has contributed to an auto-centric transportation system and a high national road emissions profile. In light of the imminent threat of catastrophic climate change, a low-emissions
transport sector transition is needed. Understanding how and why people travel is a critical prerequisite for achieving this shift.
Planners and policymakers increasingly recognise that
transport demand is fundamentally influenced by the desire for access over movement. An accessibility-based framework aligns with this interpretation and supports analysing personal and contextual drivers of
transport demand. Policymakers tasked with promoting a low-emissions
transport sector transition are seeking to identify existing low-emissions
transport uptake constraints and potential avenues for their improvement.
Using a mixed-methods approach, this thesis addresses an existing gap in the literature by analysing low-emissions
transport demand in the Greater Wellington Region (GWR), informed by an accessibility-based framework. Survey responses supplied quantitative data on user-based needs, abilities, and attitudes towards GWR low-emissions
transport options. Practicality – the degree to which a
transport option facilitates access in reasonable time, at reasonable cost, and with reasonable ease – was found to be the strongest predictor of ability to
use low-emissions
transport. Qualitative data was also collated from stakeholders knowledgeable of
transport policy and planning at the local, regional, and central government level. This provided insight into GWR low-emissions
transport supply and oversight, as well as the impact of
land-
use policies,
transport policy and funding structures, and governance agendas and capabilities. These findings support augmenting low-emissions
transport with an accessibility orientation, but also reveal the challenges of doing so within current governance structures.

This dissertation investigates household residential strategies using housing and transportation budgets, including outlays and daily travel time and distance in the case of transport. It aims to better understand the role of budget constraints in determining residential choices in order to obtain a clearer representation of these choices in applied modeling. A state of the art compares how housing demand is represented and analyzed in economics with land-use transport interaction modeling. Considering the lack of a comprehensive perspective on the one side and a tendency toward a purely statistical as opposed to a behavioral perspective on the other, our analysis of the role of housing and transport budgets intends to remedy both shortcomings.I examine housing and transport budgets in the Greater Paris Region and their implications for household residential strategies before evaluating the impact of limiting either housing or housing plus transport expenses using a theoretical model

▼ The urban agenda is demanding new approaches for urban development. Urban flexibility has been recognized as crucial for coping with uncertainty and smart growth has been advocated as a sustainable urban practice. Urban flexibility and smart growth combined lead to a more dynamic land use, in which building adaptation leads to intensification of existing built areas. However, the impacts of such large-scale and faster intensification on transport and accessibility remain unknown, as well as the required policies to respond to those impacts. This study applies scenario planning and transport modelling to explore the implications of dynamic land use for transport and spatial planning, using the city of Eindhoven as case study. Results show that central areas are suitable for dynamic land use, where intensification does not demand any road infrastructure upgrade. Directed development to central areas can increase bike share, but no form of dynamic land use leads to higher shares of public transport. Finally, spatial randomness is the dominant variable on transport and accessibility performance. Further research should look at the interaction between dynamic land use and transport over time and the design of adaptive transport policies in a dynamic land use context.

▼ The purpose of the RLTS is to guide the region's
transport spending over the next ten years. This study seeks to determine how strategic it is in terms of key environmental, economic and social outcomes: amenity and amenity access, air quality, accessibility, and low-income groups'
transport affordability. Strategic is defined as how well the RLTS will function under potential future circumstances and its internal coherency and consistency. The resilience and adaptability of the RLTS to that range of potential futures is also analysed. The RLTS' priority is increasing regional accessibility, however due to 20+ years of underinvestment in the PT infrastructure, especially rail, targets set towards that goal are limited. Amenity and air quality are both considered to not require much intervention, but amenity services would be more adequately served if they were considered on par with air quality.
Transport affordability to the community and users, especially low-income groups, was not given warranted attention. Therefore, four out of five of the outcomes appear to be well balanced. The RLTS objectives and outcomes are rather resilient, while the implementation plans are adequately adaptable with annual monitoring reports and final decisions which are also made on an annual basis. However, this can lead to inconsistencies between the Strategy and its implementation plans. The RLTS is therefore starting to head in a more sustainable direction, but the internal coherency and consistency is somewhat lacking.

▼ This study aimed to obtain a better understanding on the mechanisms and controls of mineral–organic matter (OM) interactions across a range of soil types and land uses. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to evaluate sorption capacity of different organic carbon (OC) compounds on pure minerals and their interaction mechanisms were determined by infrared spectroscopy. Role of mineralogy on the dynamics of soil OM pools was assessed in four cropped soils with contrasting mineralogy by sequential density fractionation and chemical treatments. Effect of land use change on soil OM pools also investigated using the same soils under native and cropped land uses applying different spectroscopic techniques. Results revealed that Fe and Al oxides can stabilise more OC in soils than the phyllosilicates and primary minerals through organo–mineral association. However, extend of OC sorption and stabilisation highly dependent on composition of OC, soil environments, soil depth and land uses. Preferential association of aromatic and carboxyl C with Fe and Al oxides and protonated amide N with phyllosilicates and primary minerals were noticed. In acidic environment, oxides surface showed affinity to anionic C compound e.g., carboxylate via strong ligand exchange, while the cationic amino acid was preferentially adsorbed by the phyllosilicate surfaces via electrostatic interaction. Mineral associated OC can be vulnerable to biodegradation as an effect of land use change, particularly under OC saturated condition due to the formation of weaker bonds among excessive OC loading and mineral surface. This indicates the importance of sink capacity of distinct mineral surfaces in OC stabilisation and hence should be taken into account in modelling of potential capacity of soil for C sequestration. Land use change impact was less in the sub-surface mineral associated OC, thus; mineral rich sub-surface soils can act as a potential C sink together with improved land use system.

▼ High-speed railways are becoming increasingly common in Europe. In the Netherlands soon the HSL-South will be opened. This high-speed railway line connects the Randstad to Brussels and Paris. A prominent aim of this new railway is to improve international competitiveness of the Netherlands. As a side effect it has also consequences for the distribution of offices within the Netherlands. Especially because also domestic high-speed train services will make use of the new infrastructure. Still, little research has addressed this issue of regional distributive effects. This thesis focuses on the topic how high-speed railway accessibility influences location attractiveness for offices within the Randstad. Telephone inquiries were hold among 297 decision makers of offices. Respondents were also asked to make hypothetical choices between fictitious locations (so-called ‘stated choices’). An analysis of the actual locations of offices in combination with stated choices yielded a model to determine location attractiveness. Within this model the concept of accessibility is central. A new high-speed railway, such as the HSL-South, can drastically reduce travel times between cities, at the expense of higher train fares. If the travel time advantage from an origin to a potential destination exceeds the fare supplement then these locations’ accessibility is improved. A higher accessibility makes a location more attractive. But other, more subjective factors are relevant as well. Regardless of travel times, proximity to a HST station can lead to the perception of a good accessibility. And also, evidence has been found that the availability of high-speed train services at a station can improve the image of this station and its immediate surroundings. But high-speed rail is not equally relevant to all offices. Spatial orientation is a determining factor: offices that have its business contacts distributed nationally or internationally are most influenced by high-speed rail. High-speed train accessibility is, however, rarely a decisive location factor for locating office establishments. Application of the model to different scenarios for the Randstad reveals that Rotterdam and especially Amsterdam (including Schiphol) benefit from the HSL-South. This comes at the cost of other cities in the Randstad. Particularly Utrecht suffers from the new line, because its urban region is traditionally strong in attracting the nationally oriented offices that are also sensitive to high-speed rail. Scenarios for the Zuiderzeelijn have little impact additional to the HSL-South. A specific focus on the Amsterdam urban region illustrates the dependence of the urban development on the specific outline of the high-speed train services. The choice between the South axis and the central station for HSL-South services influences the development potentials of these sites. The results confirm the usefulness of the policy of the Dutch government to support the urban redevelopment projects (‘new key projects’) around high-speed train stations. However, it is…

▼ This research provided a new method for modelling development’s traffic generation for each mode of transport by considering trip chaining effects utilising urban form and socio-demographic related indicators in a suburb scale. Estimating traffic generation by using this method shows better performance compared to the conventional methods for traffic generation estimation. The methodology of this research can be transferred to other transport modelling endeavours and the variables can be used as transport attributes in other traffic and transport-related studies. This method will also contribute to saving considerable time and budget in terms of providing data related to trip generation.

▼ The Dutch society, as well as other modern societies, is aging. Aging of modern societies is one of the most significant trends within the field of sustainable
transport. Mobility is considered to be important for older adults’ wellbeing. However, mobility becomes at risk as individuals age. Mobility systems can be described as a combination of the
land-
use system and the
transport system. The wellbeing of older adults can be described as a combination of low risk, high capacity and engagement with life, which together make for successful age.
This research focuses on the question how future mobility systems can contribute to successful aging. The theoretical framework shows that mobility plays a role for engagement, as mobility provides the ability to access social relations, social activities, services and facilities. Moreover, mobility provides the ability to go travel and sightseeing. Furthermore, the theoretical framework shows that all dimensions of successful aging are influenced by the mobility system.
By using the approach of backcasting, interviews are conducted at firms, knowledge institutes, government and interest groups. The data from these interviews is used as the input for a scenario analysis. Based on two key dimensions, four different scenarios are formed (1) concentrated living, multimodal
transport, (2) dispersed living, car-dependent
transport, (3) concentrated living, car-dependent
transport and (4) dispersed living, multimodal
transport. The scenarios provide different combinations of contributions from the mobility system to successful aging.
The first and second scenario are contrasting in terms of contributions to successful aging (the third scenario is a combination, the fourth scenario is not considered to be feasible). A proportion of the future older adults can be expected to live concentrated. However, another proportion can be expected to live dispersed. Consequently, depending on the dwelling situation, contributions from both the first and second scenario can be considered as possible improvements for the design of the mobility system. By doing so, mobility systems can be designed in such a manner that they contribute successful aging.

▼ How can accessibility be defined? How useful are different accessibility approaches in evaluating land-use and transport policy strategies? How can the economic benefits associated with accessibility changes be measured? What are the accessibility benefits of having a public transport service available as a transport option for unexpected future use? How can the land-use, transport and accessibility impacts of Dutch compact urbanisation policies implemented in the last decades be measured? The research presented in this thesis seeks to answer these and related questions. Results suggest that current practices in evaluating accessibility in the Netherlands can be improved using geographical accessibility measures within an integrated land-use/transport perspective. Another major outcome is formed by the possible significant benefits associated with option use of public transport services in addition to use and non-use benefits traditionally included in transport policy appraisal. Residents in the service area of regional railway links seemed to be willing to pay significant amounts for the continued availability of the railway links for unexpected future use. Dutch compact urbanisation policies were also shown to have contributed to the land-use and transport-related intentions of the Dutch national government. Without compact urban development urban sprawl would likely have been greater, resulting in greater car use and related environmental impacts, higher congestion and lower accessibility levels, along with stronger fragmentation of wildlife habitats.

Social and natural sciences share an interest for collective phenomena, which constitute an important part of the domain of complex systems. This thesis focuses on the study of urban systems, using analytical tools inspired by statistical physics, and also simulations, in particular agent-based models.A first analytical resolution of a Schelling spatial segregation model is presented, using a statistical physics framework linking individual and collective dynamics. This framework shows that utility or welfare in socio-economic models corresponds to a chemical potential in physics, a correspondence which is applied to a urban housing model. The housing market is further studied with a parsimonious price formation model. The implementation of an agent-based model, which reproduces the results of the standard urban economics (AMM) model, provides a second point of view on urban systems and the interaction between transport and land use. The simulations give results also when analytical resolution is lacking. The model is used to study the economic, environmental and social outcomes of having an amenity in the urban area and of polycentric cities. With two income groups, this work provides insights on the different urban social structures in North American and European cities for instance.

My work explores transit-oriented development within two different cultures, France and the Czech Republic, which nevertheless have significant factors in common with regard to the goal of promoting the modal share of mass transit from a sustainable urban development perspective. Besides the basic urban variables, such as density and functional mix, our work attempts to explore characteristics of pedestrian accessibility, all these at the neighbourhood scale around the stations. For the appreciation, original qualitative and quantitative approach to the appreciation are proposed. The strengths and weaknesses on each side and the potential for reciprocal transfer of best-practices are finally considered

The dynamic interaction of land use and transport in a highly fragmented city: the case of Cape Town, South Africa.

▼ The need for more inclusive and integrated cities has resulted in a paradigm shift in the South African
transport and
land use policy environment where
transport and
land use planning are viewed as a continuum as opposed to isolated planning aspects. Issues such as residential segregation, social exclusion, spatial inefficiencies, inequality, residential informality, marginalisation of the low-income cohort continue to form part of the current planning discourse. While policy acknowledges the need to redress these issues, the urban spatial patterns in South African cities continue to trace the historical planning trajectory. Recently, congestion has become an issue in some of South Africa’s cities with Johannesburg and Cape Town appearing in the list of the top hundred most congested cities in the world. It is thus essential to understand how South African cities can address urban accessibility and mobility issues along with redressing apartheid spatial planning to attain sustainable cities that allow for inclusivity of all population groups. Like most South African cities, Cape Town is a relic of apartheid planning where the urban spatial patterns reinforce social exclusion among other issues. Urban and
transport planning in Cape Town focuses on addressing issues of spatial inefficiencies, social exclusion, congestion due to rapid motorisation and the proliferation of informal settlements. It is against this backdrop that the central concern of this research is to understand urban dynamics linked to the spatiotemporal
interaction of
transport and
land use in Cape Town to aid in the formulation of proactive urban policies. There is compelling evidence in the literature that dynamic integrated
land use transport models provide an avenue through which the urban change process can be understood to aid in the development of adaptive
land use and
transport strategies. METRONAMICA, a dynamic
land use transport model, is applied in this research to simulate and understand
land use and
transport change in Cape Town. A sequential stage-wise procedure was implemented to calibrate the model for the period 1995- 2005 and an independent validation was carried out from 2005 to 2010 to evaluate the model. Kappa statistic and its associated variants were applied to assess the ability of the
land use model block to reproduce
land use patterns while the EMME model and previous
transport studies for Cape Town were used to evaluate the
transport model. The results from the calibration and validation exercise show that the model can reproduce historical
land use and
transport patterns. The integration of the
transport and
land use model through accessibility improved the Kappa Simulation and Fuzzy Kappa Simulation. This showed that the model explained urban change better when
land use and
transport interacted compared to an independent
land use model. This shows that accessibility can be employed in the Cape Town context to enhance the understanding of the urban change process. In addition to the Kappa statistics, the fractal dimension…

Strategic spatial planning in France is currently given a rising importance for environmental and climate issues. But is this tool really able to reduce urban sprawl and to produce a efficient framework for reducing transport emissions? And what can be the potential contributions to planning of economic analysis and prospective modelling? To answer this, we developed our study on the contribution of economic tools to planning into the global political and administrative reforms of France. We then produced a critical analysis of current planning practices and recent evolutions, and try to define the conditions for a better integration of economic analysis into planning processes and methods. For our case study (Grenoble urban area) we built and used economic tools able to inform local climate policies in the framework of urban planning. It is the first implementation of the land -use transport interaction model TRANUS in France, which was linked to an original economic methodology in order to produce marginal abatment cost curves useful at the urban level. This model and the methodology can take into account the systemic nature of cities and then help to define better…

▼ Cloud-to-Ground (CG) lightning activity was analyzed across the lower Mississippi River valley. The goal was to determine whether certain
land use/
land cover (LULC) types supported convective thunderstorms generation of CG lightning more than other LULC types. Results indicate that forested regions receive more CG lightning than any other LULC type represented in the study area. However, results also indicate that CG lightning activity can be enhanced locally by very large and/or sprawling areas of urban LULC. When cities from previous research, including Atlanta, GA, and Birmingham, AL, are combined in the rankings with cities in this study, the urban size difference between Little Rock, Arkansas, and Birmingham, Alabama, appears to highlight the area of urban LULC needed to enhance convection. Future research should focus on more cities within this gap of urban LULC area in order to identify the minimum areal expanse needed to alter convective ability over cities.

▼ Land is very central for human survival and development. In fact, it is so elemental to human
survival that it can be said that it is where life begins and it is where life ends. Land is the source
of livelihood and to many a Kenyan it is the source of food, shelter, clothing and even medicine.
Consequently the procedure of acquisition of rights or interest over the same cannot be any less
significant.
In that regard the Constitution of Kenya 2010 does recognize such right and provides for the
same under Article 40. This is the right to own property as a fundamental human right under the
Bill of Rights. More-so, chapter 5 of the supreme law is dedicated to land and environment. We
shall have a greater in-depth of this at a later stage of this paper.
Historically, the colonization of African countries by imperialists discouraged the communal life
of African communities. More particularly, the colonialists sought to eliminate the idea of
communal land ownership by introducing individual land ownership'. They argued that
communal land ownership was primitive and unproductive, throughout the period of colonization
the ways, behaviors and laws of the Briton were instilled in us. We have perfected the same over
the years and concerning land registration, we wholesomely adopted their laws and practice with
just some minor amendments.

▼ Over 18 years after the democratic government took power in South Africa, environmental
changes relevant to the land reform policies are taking place because of unintended
consequences of land reform policy. This study aimed at investigating the effects of the
South African land reform policy on land use and land cover change on a land restitution
project in Makotopong, Limpopo province, South Africa. The study used remote sensing
techniques through the analysis of Landsat TM images acquired in 1994 and 2007 to
produce landscape maps and derive land cover change. Statistics deriving the nature of the
decline in the general condition of the land restitution project gave an insight into the kind
of landscape transformation that has taken place before and after land restitution program.
Quantification of land cover classes have shown a decline in post-transfer activities with a
decline in agricultural productivity, as illustrated by the decline in area covered by
agricultural crops (showing a decline from 78.03 ha in 1994 to 20.43 ha in 2007). The
study recommends that spatial data analysis through remote sensing procedures should
form the information base in monitoring and evaluating the land reform projects. Results of
this study demonstrated that quantification of the changes in land use and land cover types
can be very useful in deriving the nature of the general environmental and social condition
of the land reform project.

Modeling is used to predict the future behavior of different phenomena. In urban planning it is also used to help planners to cope with multiple challenges of urban planning. The urban system is so complex that it is impossible to accurately predict the behavior of different agents. The urban economics has attempted to provide some explanation, but…

▼ This paper explores parking policy as it relates to the creation of densely populated downtown city centers. The impacts of careful parking planning, correlated with other factors such as streetscape and building design, dictate how people move around their community. This topic is even more important as cities across America have seen a resurgence in their population and are for the first time in decades, laying out new plans and goals of what they are seeking to achieve as it relates to
land use. The City of Rochester is one city that is working to create lively streets as stated in their 2014 Center City Master Plan. A qualitative case study analysis will be used to understand what other city’s have done with regarding to parking planning. This analysis will demonstrate that innovative approaches to parking planning written into a city code can have a desirable impact. The Project for Public Spaces (2015) states that opportunities such as these have poised American communities to properly prioritize transportation options, just as the City of Rochester has done in their Plan. There is much to be learned and subsequently, planned carefully, as it relates to the built environment and the carefully woven urban fabric.

▼ Land use and land use change strongly influence the
carbon (C) dynamics within ecosystems. This study quantified four
aspects of land use and land use change effects: 1) ecosystem C
stocks and distribution; 2) soil respiration; 3) soil C
mineralization; and 4) net ecosystem productivity. Land use systems
studied include agriculture (AG), 2-yr- and 9-yr-old hybrid poplar
plantations (2HP and 9HP, respectively), grassland (GRA), and
native forest stand (NAT). Ecosystem C stock in NAT (223 Mg C ha-1)
was similar to 9HP (174 Mg C ha-1) and both were significantly
greater than AG (122 Mg C ha-1), GRA (121 Mg C ha-1), and 2HP (110
Mg C ha-1). Cumulative soil C loss via soil respiration averaged
over two growing seasons was in the order of: NAT (7.81±0.40 Mg C
ha-1) > 9HP (5.51±0.31 Mg C ha-1) > GRA (5.23±0.30 Mg
C ha-1) > AG (5.02±0.24 Mg C ha 1) > 2HP (4.28±0.20
Mg C ha-1). Depending on land use, seasonal heterotrophic and
autotrophic respiration had respective contributions to soil
respiration of up to 35 and 83%. Soil C mineralization of bulk soil
across the land uses ranged between 2 to 5% of initial total
organic C (Ci), with mineralization rates ranging from 0.06 to 0.12
µg C mg-1 Ci d-1 and mean residence times ranging from 30 to 51
yrs. Across particle size fractions, soil C mineralization was in
the order of: AG > HPs > GRA > NAT of which
the coarse fractions, representing labile C, were the main source
of mineralized C (79%). Mineralization increased when NAT was
converted to AG; and decreased when AG was converted to HP or GRA.
Net ecosystem productivity across land uses, expressed in terms of
C, ranged between 2 (AG) and 11 Mg C ha-1 yr-1 (older HP).
Conversion from AG to GRA increased net ecosystem productivity
three-fold. When AG was converted to HP, the plantation was a C
source in the first four years and became a C sink by year five.
Results obtained from this study are relevant to modeling efforts
designed at determining the impact of future climate change on a
variety of land uses.
