The notion of the development of Africa is primarily tributary to its history and specifically to that of its independence. The African people expected that the accession to political independence would be followed by the economical independence that is instrumental in human development. The African Educational system has imported the western education prototype and has put in place free market policies instead of training/educating/moulding individuals capable of contributing with their intellectual and practical knowledge towards the making of a fair society that enhances development. To date, it is out of question to stick to this model. Development will not have any meaning if it is not genuine, showing solidarity and inclusiveness. This work is intended to conceive a typically genuine African model of development. This is ultimately linked /inseparable to the African philosophy of education whose concerns and making will constitute the objectives of this thesis. A philosopher, Jacques Maritain has already explored that possibility. While opposing the liberal education system, he has opened prospects to education for [development that shows solidarity /communal development] . Within Latin America’s context, another philosopher and educationist, Paulo Freire, has considered an alternative education paradigm. The search for a new philosophy of education for Africa is tributary to the comparative study of these two contemporary scholars.

▼ Clinical uses for assaying nerve somatotopy or continuity could benefit from more detailed mappings than current methods offer. In the present study, the efficacy of using the Utah Slanted Electrode Array (USEA) to assay nerve resomatotopy in a fast, detailed, and quantitative manner was tested. Feline tibial nerve at the ankle (TNA) and superficial peroneal nerve (SPN) branches were stimulated with bipolar electrodes at the ankle. The resultant compound action potentials (CAPs) were recorded from a USEA implanted in the sciatic nerve. Results from eight preparations showed that somatotopy of the nerve could be distinguished using the recordings with the USEA. This approach was fast, monitoring 100 sites within the nerve simultaneously. The results were quantitative, with CAP amplitudes from one stimulus being twice the CAP amplitudes from the other stimulus in distinct areas. This method was also very eproducible, showing the same somatotopy both within a preparation and among preparations: TNA stimulation consistently evoked a larger response at the posterior side of the nerve, whereas SPN stimulation evoked a larger response at the anterior side of the nerve. The ability of the USEA to record from small groups of cutaneous afferents was examined by cutaneous, bipolar stimulation of skin innervated by the TNA and SPN branches. Cutaneous stimulation of the dorsal surface of the paw evoked a recorded response at the anterior side of the nerve, whereas stimulation of the plantar surface was recorded at the posterior side of the nerve. This result was expected, because the SPN innervates the dorsum of the paw and the TNA innervates the plantar surface of the paw. Musculotopy of the sciatic nerve was also examined by stimulation through the USEA of the sciatic nerve. The resultant musculotopy map showed activation of muscles innervated by the peroneal nerve by stimulation through electrodes implanted at the anterior of the nerve. Muscles innervated by the tibial nerve were activated by stimulation through electrodes implanted at the posterior of the nerve. This result showed that the somatotopy map was similar to the musculotopy map. The documented ability to record nerve CAPs with USEAs may provide novel opportunities for research investigations and clinical applications. v

The developpement of innovative piezoelectric materials for achievement of transducers, sensors or actuators requires the implementation of hight performance of characterization method. In this context, this document proposes two methods modeling the ultrasonic wave propagation in multilayered structures and continutes graded materials. Prior, two models of characterizations were presented and applied for PZT ceramics. They use a matrix formalism of the equation of accoustic waves. This analytical formulation facilitates the resolution of the propagation equation of propagation, and facilitate the representation of the phenomena of wave transmission through a structure. The validity of these models is clearly established through comparisons of results from finite element and measurement in piezoelectric heterostructures.

This qualitative case study poses many theoretical and managerial questions in the context of research on family businesses. It has the distinction of taking place over a period of four years during which a researcher could live at the heart of the organization on a daily basis through an ethnographic approach using the participant observation method. This rare and original method of research has allowed him to be closer to the field, thus enabling the confrontation of family business literature and the daily realities of a family business experiencing a succession process. This case study has allowed the researcher to experience a stage in the succession process, that of managerial succession. In other words, it is the transmission by the founder of leadership and managerial power to potential family successors from the 2nd generation. We seek to understand how essential constructs such as trust and psychological ownership can influence the stakeholders’ behaviors (family and non-family members). By analyzing the antecedents as well as the behavioral and attitudinal consequences of these two main constructs, and by confronting them with the stakes related to this Middle Eastern family business, we were able to identify the organizational, institutional and cultural factors which impact the process of succession.

▼ Dopamine is required for normal behavior and cognition and defects in dopamine signaling underlie schizophrenia and Parkinson's disease (Van Os et al., 2009; Kalia et al., 2015). Dopamine is one of the most extensively studied neurotransmitters, yet we still do not have a complete picture of how it functions within the nervous system. The basic textbook diagram of a neuron synapse portrays neurotransmitter being released from vesicles at the synapse, traveling across the synaptic cleft, and binding neurotransmitter receptors on the surface of the post-synaptic neuron. However, for neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin, that do not directly initiate action potentials but rather modulate neuron excitability, receptors are not restricted to post-synaptic sites but can be found throughout the neuron including on dendrites, soma, and at presynaptic locations (Zhang et al., 2016; Zussy et al., 2016). The effects of these types of receptors on neural activity are difficult to measure as neuron activity is measured at the soma. Such measurements can reveal effects of receptors located upstream of the recording instrument including at the soma or in proximal dendrites but they can not measure changes in neural activity caused by receptors located at presynaptic sites. The effects of these presynaptic receptors must be measured in downstream, synaptically connected cells. To gain a better understanding of the cellular mechanisms of dopamine receptor signaling we study dopamine's effects on the excitability of the ASH chemosensory neuron in C. elegans. ASH excitability is modulated by dopamine acting through the D1-like dopamine receptor DOP-4 (Ezcurra et al., 2011). We have used GCaMP3, a genetically-encoded calcium sensor, to measure dopamine effects in ASH by measuring changes in GCaMP3 fluorescence at the soma and we have not observed any dopamine-dependent changes. In addition, our preliminary localization studies suggest that DOP-4 is concentrated in the axon of ASH where synapses are found. These results suggest that DOP-4 may act at presynaptic sites in ASH. To measure the effects of DOP-4 signaling at these presynaptic sites we have generated cell-specific transgenes that drive GCaMP3 expression in the neurons postsynaptic to ASH. Once these transgenes are expressed in the worm, calcium recordings will be used to measure dopamine effects on neural excitability.

▼ In recent years, there has been significant interest in the development of new and innovative rotorcraft gearboxes. Future helicopter transmissions aim to reduce overall gear train weight while maintaining efficiency and reliability. The Pericyclic Mechanical
Transmission (PMT) is one of the compelling candidates that can achieve these goals. It consists of a high reduction ratio, high tooth contact ratio, and nutating/rotating mechanism which incorporates meshing conjugate face gear (FG) pairs. The use of a FG pair is novel for aerospace applications, and represents a new area of research. Accordingly, there is a distinct knowledge gap that must be bridged for this technology to become a reality. With the intention of supporting that effort, this investigation consisted of three key areas: 1) applying commercial modeling and simulation software; 2) conducting
transmission error (TE) analysis, and; 3) exploring the performance of a FG pair. The first objective was achieved by generating the FG models with SolidWorks 2012-2013 and then introducing them to the commercial simulation package Abaqus 6.12-2 to evaluate static
transmission error (TE). A novel three-dimensional expression of TE was specifically developed for use in a FG pair. When the simulation data was post processed it showed that the FG pair is capable of a peak-to-peak static TE of 0.382 μm. This result is significantly less than typical values found in industry, which bodes well for future applications. In addition, the physics of the system were well represented, with fluctuations in TE corresponding to teeth entering and leaving the FG mesh, stress concentrations on the inner tooth radius, and clearly visible contact lines (as a function of contact pressure) along a plane of contact. All of these behaviors were predicted by previous literature, and helped build confidence in the simulation. Lastly, the entire process was documented, providing a complete evaluation package for the future. These results represent original contributions to the understanding of a FG pair, which will be integral to developing the PMT as a viable next-generation solution for demanding aerospace applications.

Simian foamy virus (SFV) are the third family of exogenous complex retroviruses infecting humans. These viruses, of origins, are transmitted by body fluids (mainly saliva), through a direct contact between an individual and an infected m establish a chronic infection in the infected human host. To date, neither pathology, nor secondary transmission has be to be associated with SFV infection in humans. Therefore, SFV represents a natural model of restriction emerging simiar in humans. During my PhD, I characterized the humoral response against SFV in people living in Cameroon and Gabon, mainly infected bites during hunting episodes. I showed the presence of SFV neutralizing antibodies in the plasma of 48 infected individ titers. Our study population is infected with viruses of 2 different genotypes, which differ in the central region of the En region involved in binding to the cellular receptor. While in 60% of cases, neutralizing response was specific to a single genotype, 40% of cases showed cross-reactivity. Cr( was associated in 50% of cases with co-infection with viruses from both genotypes. In conclusion, my PhD is the first study to characterize neutralizing antibodies in individuals chronically infected with a zoonotic SFV : these antibodies are frequently detected at high titers and are directed against epitopes commonly found in chimpanzee and gorilla SFV.

▼ Influenza viruses are known to cause seasonal
epidemics that claim nearly half a million lives each year. In
addition, influenza viruses can also cause occasional pandemics
which, in the past, have resulted in a significant increase in the
number of influenza-related deaths worldwide. Pandemics arise when
influenza viruses with novel hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase
(NA) surface proteins are introduced into the human population to
which there is no prior immunity. In addition to causing disease,
emerging viruses with pandemic potential must also be capable of
sustaining efficient human-to-human transmission. Transmission of
human influenza viruses occurs mainly through contact of the
mucosal membranes with respiratory droplets containing infectious
viral particles. Previous studies have shown that both
environmental and molecular factors can influence the efficiency of
influenza virus transmission such as air temperature and humidity,
and viral protein stability. Another factor which is likely to
affect the efficiency of influenza virus transmission is virion
morphology. Influenza virions are known to have multiple forms,
ranging from 100 nm spheres to filamentous particles with lengths
of up to 20 μm. Furthermore, there is a known correlation between
the size of respiratory droplets and the distance in which they can
travel. The smallest droplets measuring between 1 and 5 μm are
carried the greatest distances and are therefore thought to be
responsible for long range influenza virus transmission. For this
reason, influenza viruses that produce an abundance of small
spherical virions may exhibit higher transmission efficiencies than
viruses with large filamentous phenotypes.
In April of 2009, a
novel influenza virus (pH1N1) with an extremely high rate of
transmission efficiency emerged in the human population. This virus
was identified as an H1N1 reassortant between two influenza viruses
that had been circulating throughout pig populations for many
years. Most of the pH1N1 gene segments were originated from the
triple reassortant (TR) swine lineage, while the M and NA segments
are from viruses of the Eurasian swine lineage. Despite being
genetically similar, TR viruses rarely infected humans and were
incapable of sustaining efficient human-to-human transmission. We
therefore tested whether pH1N1 and TR viruses which differ in their
ability to transmit between humans also differ in virion
morphology. We discovered using immunofluorescence and electron
microscopy that the highly transmissible pH1N1 strain produced
predominantly spherical virions, whereas the poorly transmissible
TR isolates induced a filamentous phenotype. We also showed that
the difference in morphology between these viruses was due to
specific amino acid residues with the influenza matrix (M1) protein
at positions 30, 207, and 209. Substitution of these pH1N1 M1
residues with the corresponding TR residue by site-directed
mutagenesis resulted in recombinant pH1N1 viruses with filamentous
morphology, reduced viral growth kinetics, and small…

▼ Epidemiologists focus on preventing and controlling the spread of disease within populations; however the majority of current experimental research only explores how virulence factors interact with host immunity within or clinical therapeutics targeted to individual hosts. The defining characteristic of any infectious disease is its ability to transmit; investigation into how host and bacterial factors contribute to facilitate
transmission is necessary and will contribute to novel strategies that reduce infectious disease burden. This work utilizes a recently developed model system to measure the
transmission of Bordetella bronchiseptica from infected mice to naïve susceptible mice. In particular, this dissertation investigates how vaccine-induced immunity and bacterial factors affect
transmission of the Bordetella.
First, we examined the role of an evolutionarily-conserved virulence factor utilized by many bacterial pathogens, the Type III Secretion System (T3SS). Investigation of a mutant lacking an active T3SS failed to transmit to naïve susceptible mice. Following examination of multiple parameters of
transmission, initial colonization was identified to be deficient. In the course of natural colonization, a host’s first line of defense against a pathogen is its microbiota. Our analysis revealed that during infection, the T3SS is required for B. bronchiseptica to compete with microbiota in vivo and that displacement of the host microbiota by wild-type B. bronchiseptica occurs during
transmission in our model system. Furthermore, prior depletion of microbiota in susceptible mouse by enrofloxacin restored the mutant’s ability to transmit. Another important virulence factor utilized by the Bordetella is filamentous hemagglutinin (FHA). A B. bronchiseptica mutant lacking fhaB was also unable to transmit in this system. Mice inoculated with the mutant failed to shed any bacteria during the time-course. As an important factor in the
transmission process, failure to shed dramatically decreases the chances to pass disease to new hosts. FHA is capable of modulating the immune system, and in its absence, B. bronchiseptica failed to recruit neutrophils to the site of infection, a key component previously linked to the shedding of B. bronchiseptica.
Finally, we have examined how current vaccine strategies can affect
transmission rates, identifying discrepancies between whole-cell and acellular vaccines’ ability to control
transmission. Examination of mice previously vaccinated revealed that only whole-cell vaccination was able to reduce shedding from infected individuals. In particular, components of the immune system that are recruited to the site of infection play an important role in determining the amount of shedding. Increased recruitment of B cells and decreased recruitment of neutrophils to the nasal cavity of vaccinated mice correlated to the amount of shedding observed from individual mice.
Combined, the data here suggest roles for both the T3SS and FHA in the
transmission of Bordetella, and that current vaccines,…

▼ Digital video transmission is widely used nowadays in multimedia. Frame dropping, freeze and reduced number of frames in the transmitted video are common symptoms of bad transmission quality. In order to assess the quality of transmission, a criterion is introduced in a model for a no reference video jerkiness measure [3]. This model is dierent from the former models presented as it depends on viewing conditions and video resolutions, so it is applicable for any frame size from QCIF to HD. The model uses simple mathematical equations of jerkiness and can be used for any video sequence [3]. A model of reduced reference method (Qtransmission) which depends on a pre-measured Jerkiness is introduced as a suggestion of future work.

▼ A
transmission matrix (TM) describes the linear relationship between input and output when a coherent wavefront passes through a scattering medium. Measurement of the TM enables numerous applications, such as focusing light and image reconstruction. However, measuring TM continues to be very challenging due to its large dimension. The state-of-the-art methods, including phase-shifting holography and double phase retrieval, require significant amounts of measurements, and the subsequent data processing is often slow and computationally intensive. In this thesis, we propose a solution for
transmission matrix recovery, called 3PointTM, that uses a minimal number of measurements per pixel for TM recovery. As a result, 3PointTM reduces the measurement budget by a factor of two, as compared to phase-shifting holography. This enables the acquisition of TMs at high resolutions and with low computational complexity. We validate our approach on both real and simulated data, and in particular demonstrate focusing of light and image reconstruction on dense scattering media in high SNR settings at 4X reduced complexity.

▼ My sound-based arts practice is currently concerned with the shift of focus from the materiality of the sonic art object to the conceptual and semantic dimensions involved in interaction within a system. The twentieth century saw the dawn of technologies that could not only mediate the sonic arts in new ways but also inform its techniques and tropes. Over the last few decades we have seen the emergence of the genres
Transmission and Telematic Art, the methodology of both often being informed by new concepts of space. The rise of post-industrial Capitalism situates us in a new epoch of spatial awareness. This seems particularly relevant now that mediated sonic and communication technologies are an integral part of our lives. Transmitting media “punching a hole in space” now ignore acoustic container boundaries: a sound heard and its source can exist separately yet simultaneously. Physical location and distance become less relevant. How does this create a shift in how we perceive the spatial within the practice of living?; and 2. redefining concepts of author and audience. All who participate are involved in authorship creating a form that is impossible to mediate to a passive audience 5. My work explores how this situation and the aesthetics deriving from it inform me as a practitioner within the medium of sound: the generative and emergent behaviour that arises from relationship as a form of “composition” and, of particular interest to me, the desire to shift focus from the traditional role of sound as an object of aesthetic expression to immersive interactive auditory space as a means of entering into dialogue with the multidimensional environment which humanity inhabits.

▼ This dissertation looks at the traditional pottery of the Cumberland Peninsula on the island of Espiritu Santo in the context of its relationships with its makers, their history, traditional institutions and contact experiences, and also with other pottery in Vanuatu, in particular, the different pottery made further south on the same coast, that of the people of Wusi. The relationship between potteries is a persistent theme, starting with an attempt to trace their inheritance from the Lapita pottery believed to be made by the first colonisers of the region, and going on to compare the two technologies with each other and other ethnographically known potteries in Oceania. With doubt remaining about their precise relationship, the roles of contact history and cultural practice in the environments of the two areas are looked at to account for first an enhancement and then a decline of pottery making on the Cumberland Peninsula, while the comparative environmental harshness of the Wusi area has, in similar cultural and historic conditions, actually acted to help preserve pottery making there.

▼ The transmission system is critical for automotive and heavy duty equipment due to its prominent role in the powertrain system, which is often challenged with degraded torque capacity and harsh dynamic response. Simulation-guided design can provide appropriate guidelines to resolve these problems with virtual analyses. In current study, the tribological and dynamical study of an automatic transmission is performed at two levels: a wet clutch and powertrain.
In this dissertation, tribological study is performed for a wet clutch based on the thermohydrodynamic (THD) analysis that takes the following factors into account.
• The groove effect (depth, area, and pattern) is investigated for lubrication analysis;
• The elastic-plastic asperity contact model is used to predict the contact pressure;
• The heat transfer during the entire cycle of engagement from slip to lock to detachment is covered;
• The engagement time and the temperature profile are predicted for torque and thermal analysis.
With large engagement cycles, the friction lining of a wet clutch is worn off due to the material degradation at high load/temperature condition. By relating the wear behavior with the mechanism of thermal degradation and thermomechanical degradation, a physics-based wear model is proposed for the first time to analyze the wear process in a wet clutch. The predicted wear rate falls within nearly 95% confidence interval of the test results. Discrepancies of simulation are primarily due to limited availability of input data and model assumptions. Therefore, an uncertainty quantification analysis of the wear model is performed using the Monte Carlo simulations. In addition, a comprehensive parametric analysis of the clutch wear is considered with various factors, including groove design (waffle pattern shows the minimum wear), material properties and operational configurations (rotational speed plays the most influential role).
The dynamics of transmission directly affects the performance of the powertrain. The coupling effects of the key transmission components are examined. Of particular interests are the stick-slip behavior of the wet clutch and backlash of the gear train. Through simulation of the powertrain, the main source and the pattern of vibration propagation in the driveline are examined. Major vibration is observed during inappropriate clutch engagement.

▼ To be able to keep up with energy demands new
transmission lines need to be designed and built. Design and planning is a long process due to the economic, political and environmental reasons. This project will analyze the line design with respect of the efficiency, percent of voltage regulation and power losses. In the second part of the project abnormal conditions will be analyzed for all of the shunt faults occurring on the different locations throughout the line. All data are selected base on the 500 kV line as reference. Conclusion is if we transmit low power over extra high voltage and long
transmission line the receiving-end voltage is greater than sending-end voltage, which is undesirable situation, and the faults are more severe if they occur closer to the source.

▼ Actuation is possibly the most fundamental aspect of any robotic system; a robot without any means to interact with the physical world is simply a computer. As such, new actuation methods are valuable additions to the field of robotics, and optimization of such methods can help advance the field as a whole.
Twisted string actuators (TSA) are a relatively novel type of actuator, which convert the rotary motion of an electric motor to a tensile linear motion by twisting two or more strings around one another thereby shortening the length. When the twisting element is composed of high tensile strength fibers (such as high modulus polyethylene fiber), these actuators have the potential to possess many desirable characteristics of actuators, such as high force, high speed, high specific power (power to weight ratio), and high power density (power to volume ratio). Furthermore, because the
transmission element is string, these actuators can be designed and built very cost efficiently.
One of the major drawbacks of TSAs is their endurance life. While many engineering components operate in the millions of cycles, twisted string actuators operate in the range of tens of thousands of cycles. For some applications, this low endurance life is no issue, because the strings in the actuator are cheap and easily replaced. For many applications, however, this low of endurance life is unacceptable.
The purpose of this thesis is to explore the effects of the end termination of the twisted element on the endurance life of the actuator. The basic architecture and concept of twisted string actuators is presented, as well as the mathematical description of their behavior. A hypothesis concerning the endurance life of the twisted element with respect to the end termination of the twisted element is presented and supported. A potential solution to the problem of low endurance life of twisted string actuators is presented and tested alongside two other common architectures. The results from this test are presented and discussed.
When different architectures of twisted strings were tested and compared under identical conditions (i.e. style of string, material of string, resting length of twisting element, loading of the actuator, and actuation speed) it was found that the separator plate architecture outperformed both the pulley-to-pulley architecture, and the proposed architecture. The pulley-to-pulley tests resulted in a median endurance life of 36.5 cycles, the separator plate architecture resulted in a median endurance life of 364 cycles, and the proposed architecture resulted in a median endurance life of 115 cycles. During testing, the phenomenon of axial twist of individual strings, in addition to the twisting of the string pair driven by the motor, was observed, and identified as a potential explanation for the limited endurance life of the proposed architecture when compared with that of the separator plate architecture.

▼ Electricity is a crucial form of energy in our societies, and
transmission lines are key elements to ensure the reliability of electric power grids. Continuity of service is the main preoccupation of electric utilities, and this continuity may be disrupted by a large variety of sources and accidents.
Transmission lines, by their intrinsic topology, remain the grid components that are the most exposed to climatic sources of disruption. The most common and important source of dynamic loads on
transmission lines results from wind effects on the towers and conductors. Conductors are particularly sensitive to wind effects as they are long and relatively flexible (compared to their supports) and are literally wind-catching structures in the power grid infrastructure. In cold climates, wind and ice have compounding effects on lines and give rise to the most severe design loading conditions. Therefore accurate prediction of the wind pressure on overhead conductors is essential to conduct a reliable assessment of the ine response, in terms of both electrical clearances and conductor loads transferred to supports. Spatial randomness of wind loads on overhead lines has already been addressed by stochastic analysis methods and is now taken into account in design with the use of so-called span factors. Further reasonable gains in wind load accuracy can be obtained by examining the physics of wind effects on conductors, in both non-iced and iced conditions, with improved predictions of lift and drag forces determined from fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis. The traditional design method to apply wind load on
transmission lines is to convert the design wind speed to a static pressure through Bernoulli 's equation where the pressure is proportional to the air density and the squared wind speed. In this approach the fluid-structure interaction of wind and line components is ignored: wind is considered as a quasi-static load on conductors and supports, while special instability effects due to particular wind conditions suc as vortex shedding (Aeolian vibrations) and flutter (cable galloping) are accounted for separately with specific mitigation solutions if necessary. In gusty wind conditions with high turbulence intensity, conductors may experience large horizontal displacements that affect their surrounding wind flow. A physically accurate wind load evaluation on conductors is possible by computational wind-structure interaction analysis. To date, largely due to its high computational cost and the lack of experimental data to validate computational models, an advanced fluid-structure analysis framework for wind-cable interaction has not been developed. In this study a new approach based on FSI analysis to evaluate equivalent wind loads on conductors is developed. The first step in such an approach is accurate evaluation of wind pressure on conductor. For this purpose the FSI analysis is carried in two dimensions where the detailed bare and iced conductor section geometry and surrounding air flow are modeled, considering a…

▼ D.Ing.
Alternating current systems employing single-frequency sinusoidal waveforms render optimal service when the currents in that system are also sinusoidal and have a fixed phase relationship to the voltages that drive them. Under unity- power factor conditions, the currents are in phase with the voltages and optimal net-energy transfer takes place under minimum loading conditions, i.e. with the lowest effective values of current and voltage in the system. The above conditions were realised in the earlier years, because supply authorities generated 50 Hz sinusoidal voltages and consumers drew 50 Hz sinusoidal currents with fixed phase relationships to these voltages. Static and rotating electrical equipment like transformers, motors, heating and lighting equipment were equally compatible with this requirement and well-behaved AC networks were more the rule than the exception. The fact that three-phase systems conveyed the bulk of the power from one topographical location to the next did not constrain the utilisation of that concept at all, even though poly-phase transmission systems were necessary to increase the economy of transmission and to furnish non-pulsating power transfer. Also, additional theory had to be developed to handle unbalanced conditions in these multi-phase systems and to take care of complex network analysis and fault conditions. Difficulties begin to manifest themselves when equipment not meeting these requirements is connected to the network and when the currents it draws are not sinusoidal. An increasing number of applications demand DC-voltage supplies from which DC-currents are to be drawn. Because power transmission is carried out by means of AC networks, the DC is furnished by converting or rectifying the AC-supply. Power-electronic circuits, of which the R 2P2 power supplies the AEC employs are no exception, employ line-commutated AC/DC converters in their front-ends, and fall into that category. Although these line-commutated, phase-controlled AC/DC converters are capable of handling giga-watt power levels, line-frequency commutation causes the currents they draw on the AC-side to be distorted, even though still to be periodic. These non-sinusoidal currents, drawn from the source, along the transmission lines and through other distribution system immittances, also give rise to non-sinusoidal voltage drops between the source and the load, which results in distorted voltage waveforms at other nodes and at the load. Harmonic penetration studies are essential to evaluate the performance of transmission systems in the presence of current distortion sources. These sources do not only bring about voltage distortion within the confines of their own borders, but extend their influence outside into those of other consumers as well. Supplyutilities are wary of the distortion introduced into their networks by consumers and initial recommendations have now given way to rigid standards for curbing harmonic pollution by consumers Because conventional steady-state alternating current circuit theory…

▼ Transmission charges are levied against generators and suppliers for their use of transmission networks. The majority of existing transmission charging methods were designed for a system dominated by conventional and controllable generation. The resultant transmission charges reflect network users’ contribution to the system peak. The integration of renewable generation brings fundamental challenges in transmission planning and charging. Main criteria of transmission planning have changed from meeting system peak demand to the trade-offs between operational and investment costs. Transmission charging is required to effectively reflect these trade-offs. This research work aims to develop novel transmission charging methods for low carbon power systems, reflecting the contribution to transmission investments from different generation technologies, different locations, and critically different times. It firstly identifies the key drivers and key conditions of transmission investments under the economic criteria. In the second step, the key drivers and conditions are reflected in the developing of T-LRIC method, ToU-LRIC method and ToU-ICRP method. Major innovations of the proposed methods include 1. reflecting the trade-offs between operational and investments costs by employing investment time horizons to reflect the impacts of system operation on transmission investments (T-LRIC method and ToU-LRIC method). 2. differentiating various generation technologies by firstly quantifying their impacts on the time horizons of network investments, then translating these impacts to transmission charges (T-LRIC method and ToU-LRIC method). 3. providing time-specific transmission charges, in which Time-of-Use periods are identified by clustering time-series congestion costs or transmission charges, thus reflecting the typical conditions of system congestions and the required transmission investments (ToU-LRIC method and ToU-ICRP method). The main benefits from introducing these innovations are i) to guide the short-run behaviours of network users, thus mitigating transmission congestions and promoting efficient utilization of existing networks; ii) to incentivize appropriate generation expansion, thus reducing or deferring costly future transmission investments.

▼ As the success of P2P file sharing systems such as BitTorrent and eMule, P2P has become a promising technology to provide video streaming services over the Internet. The P2P technology is shown to be capable of significantly reducing the
transmission overhead of video server. However, due to the dynamic nature of peers, a P2P streaming system suffers from bursty packet loss caused by peer departures. Furthermore, as the packet being forwarded peer by peer, the situation becomes worse and worse. This problem is recognized as packet loss accumulation problem.
To overcome bursty packet loss and eliminate packet loss accumulation problems caused by peer departures in P2P streaming systems, a multi-source structure combining with a distributed FEC scheme for P2P streaming systems is proposed. In the proposed structure, each peer connects to multiple parents according to the pre-specified FEC packets ensemble and each parent forwards partial streaming packets to the peer. If one or few parents fail, other parents can still provide most of remaining part of streaming packets that can be used to recover the missing packets by using packet level FEC scheme. To evaluate the performance of P2P streaming systems using the proposed multi-source structure, we first propose a Continuous-Time Markov Chain to model the arrival/departure behavior of parents in P2P systems. Based on the Markov Chain, we further derived equations to calculate packet loss probabilities for both single-source and multi-source P2P systems. The mathematical analyses show how the packet loss accumulation occurs in P2P systems and how the proposed multi-source structure eliminates packet loss accumulation problem. In addition, simulations are conducted using NS2 to evaluate the proposed multi-source structure. Simulation results verify that the proposed multi-source structure combining with an appropriate FEC protection is capable of overcoming burst packet loss and eliminating packet loss accumulation problems. The simulation results also show that the proposed multi-source structure performs better than the single-source and the PROMISE/CollectCast P2P systems in terms of packet loss, end-to-end delay, and PSNR. A prototype system is implemented to conduct a real experiment over the Internet to validate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

▼ A purpose built facility was designed, built and operated at the Advanced Thermal Hydraulic Research Laboratory, which is located at Oregon State University. This facility was used to heat a plate of Alloy 304 Stainless Steel to 800 °C and then cool the plate using a fine mist of water droplets. During the cooling process, the temperature of the plate was measured using an infrared camera. Using the experimental data an inverse calculation was performed to determine the heat transferred from the test plate. The experimental heat transfer data was used to develop a set of piecewise equations that describe the heat transfer from the test plate with a given flow rate over the four boiling regimes.

▼ This study concerns language
transmission between multilingual parents and their children. The goal of this study is to determine what linguistic challenges are faced by multilingual parents while raising their children. This has been done using qualitative research based on semi-structured interviews.
The notions of diglossia, multilingualism, multilingual and multicultural identity, mother tongue, choice of languages and of relations between languages and emotions are examined in this study. For this thesis’ theoretical anchoring, the multidisciplinary concepts used include authors from fields such as sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, cultural anthropology, philosophy, and psychoanalysis.
The conclusion shows that the language
transmission between multilingual parents and their children is a dynamic and complex process. A choice of language is often down to the parents – however it is not always simple and numerous factors come into play in the process of making a choice. On the one hand these factors come from the multilingual parents, are connected with the parents’ personal experiences, and come from their own representations of their languages. On the other hand, they also come from the geographical, linguistic and cultural environment in which this
transmission takes place; as well as the multilingual parents’ circle of acquaintances.
Finally this study shows that the language choices made are not emotionally harmless to the parents’ linguistic identities. The minorisation of one of their languages can provoke feelings of sadness or disappointment in the parents. However despite their disappointment, the parents continue to harbour desires that their children will eventually discover the minorised languages and cultures.

▼ The World Health Organisation estimates that nine million people are infected with
tuberculosis (TB) every year of which ninety-five percent live in developing countries.
Africa has one of the highest incidences of TB in the world. but few of its countries are
equipped to diagnose drug-resistant TB. This study aimed to develop a robust. yet
simple and cost-effective assay. which would require minimal sophisticated
instrumentation and specialised personnel that would make drug sensitivity screening for
multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) and extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis
(XDR-TB) accessible to resource-poor high-burden settings.
A four-quadrant colorimetric agar plate method was developed which showed good
specificity (97.3%-100%) and sensitivity (77.8%-100%) compared to the polymerase
chain reaction (PCR) method used as gold standard. Agreement between the methods.
using Simple Kappa Coefficients. ranged between very good and excellent. all with high
statistical significance (P < 0.0001). The currently used BACTEC MGIT SIREN
sensitivity assay coupled with the E-test® strip method. as routinely used in the TB
reference laboratory. was compared and showed excellent comparison with the newlydeveloped
plate method. for each antibiotic tested. as well as the resultant monoresistant,
MDR- or XDR-TB diagnoses. Moreover. the new method was found to be
extremely cost-effective. priced at half the cost of a peR assay.
These four quadrant plates. with a colorimetric indicator and selected antibiotics. can be
considered as an economic altemative or a complimentary method for laboratories
wishing to reduce the cost and complexity for TB drug sensitivity testing. Routine
diagnostic testing would thus be made more accessible and affordable to laboratories
that are not presently diagnosing drug resistant TB. therefore enhancing case detection
and treatment in the resource-poor settings hardest hit by this curable disease.

▼ The largest source of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in children is through mother-to-child transmission and the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) programme plays a big role in reducing the infection. However, its effectiveness depends on the involvement of male partners, considering the fact that men are decision-makers in many of the African families, who make important decisions that have a big impact on women’s health. Male involvement remains a challenge in most low- and middle-income countries, including Namibia. In an effort to reduce the HIV infection among infants and young children in the country, the Ministry of Health and Social Services implemented the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV programme in 2002, unfortunately, only 4.7% of the male partners managed to visit the ANC / PMTCT facilities in Oshakati District, for a period of ten years. A quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional and analytical study on the level of male involvement and factors influencing involvement in the prevention of mother -to -child transmission of HIV programme in Oshakati district was carried out. The purpose of the study was to determine the level of male involvement and factors associated with involvement in PMTCT in the Oshakati District. The objectives were to determine the level of male involvement and factors contributing to involvement in PMTCT. The population consisted of males, whose female partners were attending the antenatal care in the Oshakati District. A purposive sampling technique was used to sample 115 male partners. A pilot test was carried out before the actual data collection. Data was collected using a standardised interview questionnaire and were analysed using a Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 22. The data analysis revealed statistical significant associations between education level (0.001), age of female partners (0.002) and type of a relationship (0.005) and male involvement. Other factors identified were attitudes and beliefs about PMTCT, lack of information about PMTCT, culture, lack of trust within the relationship, time and health system. The study recommended for the multi-sectoral approach and for the appropriate changes in labour legislations, in order to improve the PMTCT outcomes. The implementation of male champion strategy should be embraced as an attempt to change the negative attitudes and beliefs by men, by making them effective educators and advocators for PMTCT. The programme should consider involving men and opinion leaders in the monitoring and evaluation exercises through community consultative meetings since the key factors that influence male involvement in PMTCT include inadequate knowledge and misconception about HIV and PMTCT. The study concluded that male partners lack knowledge about PMTCT, hence their level of involvement is limited.

▼ BACKGROUND: The dynamic effect that fatigue plays on acute neuromuscular excitability has been studied at length without arriving at either an accepted explanation or adequate understanding. Researchers agree that the mode by which fatigue is achieved may contribute to the body's response and recovery. Eccentric exercise, as a method by which fatigue is achieved, is commonly incorporated due to its qualities of producing a high muscle strain and low energy expenditure simultaneously. The influence of eccentric-induced fatigue, as it pertains to postural stability and motoneuron pool excitability, is not well understood. PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of fatigue on motoneuron pool excitability and postural stability in healthy adults. HYPOthesis: Motoneruon pool excitability will be facilitated despite a simultaneous inhibition in postural stability. METHODS: Twelve volunteers (24.4 ± 6.7 yrs; female n=6; male n=6) participated in a single 10-minute bout of eccentric exercise-induced fatigue. H-reflex measurements, used to measure motor pool excitability, and a Limits of Stability (LOS) test, used to quantify postural stability, were administered prior to and immediately following exercise participation. T-tests were utilized to compare eccentric fatigue's effect on the specific neural functions previously delineated. RESULTS: Statistical significance (tn=+2.408, p=0.035) was found on one measure of postural stability, in which there was a facilitation. CONCLUSION: Implications for such findings indicate that eccentric-induced fatigue may more actively be prescribed as part of an appropriate rehabilitation and physical therapy protocol without exposing clients to a risk for increased neuromuscular compromise. Such findings are intended to serve as preparation for extending the investigation to an elderly cohort who may benefit more directly from the integration of eccentric exercise within therapeutic protocols.
