▼ Media entrepreneurship has given rise to a new media space in which new innovative forms of digital technology have emerged and revolutionised the way we now see the content of new media. The on flowing relation between the creative practitioner and the medium has enabled ‘auteurs’ to use digital technology to present new reflections of their work and to create a projection of commercial content with somewhat of an advertising component. We tend to look at the commercialisation of a medium in retrospect with regard to the medium as ‘means’, forgetting however that it is the emphasis on the means which compromises the outlook of how the work of an auteur evolves through multiple digital mediums.
Though commercialized in many forms, this dissertation points out the many pathways in which ordinary auteurs have the power to claim digitally networked fame to advertise not only their own work but also to recreate that presence of in the form of a community of celebrity stardom and appeal. We could argue that the work of an auteur can achieve the role of celebrity endorser once driven and sustained through the avenues presented through digital media.
Consequently, the role of the auteur has now been transformed to the celebrity ‘quota’ who can now drive multiple projects and revenue streams thereby redefining the auteur’s significance as a primary advertising utility. We see it in musical artists, actors, sports people and even gamers. The requirement to achieve authenticity through presenting to audiences on
transmedia platforms leads to new forms of verification of a million subscribers or 20 million views and likes which has enabled prosumers to connect with their audiences, offering their special talents or advice while at the same time collecting a reward to enhance their celebrity status. The role of the auteur is still alive and it can be said that digital
transmedia media networks have helped kept it alive, albeit in a transformed state.

▼ The delivery of fiction across multiple platforms is becoming an increasingly important component of the contemporary media landscape. Transmedia storytelling is no longer a mere buzzword. Content creators, seeking to expand the lifespan of their IP’s and their revenues, are looking for ways to exploit the migratory consumption patterns of today’s media users. However, to date, storytellers have been unable to fully exploit the possibilities transmedia provides. This practice-led PhD was inspired by the necessity to understand transmedia at a stage when a new grammatical language for creators is needed, as well as updated business models. Rather than examining transmedia from an exclusively theoretical standpoint, this work uses The Tower of Fables, a project created to re-launch fairytales to the hyperlinked kids of today, as a case study. Using research and subsequent assessments, this work aims to shed light on the current situation in Europe, examining the forces at play that influence the way practitioners conceive and design a fictional world meant to unfold across distinct media. Media production is always subject to external pressures, influences and constraints. This practice-led PhD offers a breakdown of the actual development phase of my native transmedia project. Every choice is backed up by a series of theories in the hope that these practical guideposts can be used by others. The finished work was then taken to the market with the intention of investigating the aesthetic and industrial implications on the creative and financing process, and ultimately to evaluate how they affect the final product. From this it was concluded that media convergence does not necessarily lead to industry convergence. This thesis formulates a case for the urgent need of the creation of formats to facilitate dialogue between creators and investors.

▼ This thesis comprises an exploratory study with a media-archaeological approach examining the shared properties of contemporary phenomenon
transmedia storytelling and the medieval Catholic Church. The constructed opposition between storytelling in the Catholic Church and contemporary
transmedia storytelling provides new insight into the historical and recent practices of
transmedia storytelling. Using the medieval Catholic Church as a framework for contemporary
transmedia storytelling reveals structural resemblances between storytelling in the Middle Ages and storytelling in contemporary
transmedia. These resemblances will be demonstrated in interrelated textual analyses divided in four categories. The first category examines the case of the (fictional) character, because characters are often central in a
transmedia story (
transmedia character). The second category provides insight into narratological concepts and franchising (
transmedia narrative). The third looks at
transmedia as a product and the economic logic of media companies and the Catholic Church expanding their ‘products’ (
transmedia distribution), and the last one emphasizes the functional use of aesthetics (
transmedia immersion). Through these four categories, this thesis will present an alternative interpretation of historical and recent media phenomena. Placing the Catholic Church and
transmedia storytelling within a frame provides a better understanding of both phenomena. By suggesting the parallels, it is not implied that media-use in the medieval Catholic Church is identical to contemporary media culture; the categories of
transmedia storytelling discussed in this thesis have affiliations with earlier movements, but have radically different means to similar ends.

▼ Transmedia research has in the past been mainly interested in defining transmedia and examining transmedia franchises that have their starting point in movies and TV-series. However, there are multiple transmedia constellations that have a game as their starting point, or as a core. In this thesis, I suggest that there is a need for a game-centric transmedia research.
The survey data from two examples of game-centric transmedia, Defiance (Trion Worlds, 2013) and Quantum Break (Remedy Entertainment, 2016), were analyzed by using grounded theory-informed approach. This was done in order to find out what motivates an audience to consume or avoid game-centric transmedia and what kind of experiences does the integrated transmedia style of Quantum Break offer compared to the separate transmedia style of Defiance.
The results of this study show that if the developers of game-centric transmedia are aiming for an accessible and cinematic experience, integrated transmedia might be the better choice. The motivations to consume game-centric transmedia had a strong focus on narrative aspects and there were several mentions of immersion and identifying with the characters in the data. The results differ from earlier transmedia audience studies and suggest the need for more game-centric transmedia audience studies, where the core text is a game instead of a television show.

▼ A storyscape is the new medium of storytelling. It originates in the model of
transmedia storytelling defined by Henry Jenkins (2006a) in Convergence Culture and applied to The Matrix franchise. The storyscape medium is conceptualized from the author/designer perspective as four gestalts that create a whole from stand-alone parts. The four gestalts are mythopoeia, character, canon, and genre. This approach frames the authoring of this story-centric model in opposition to the design approaches of world-building or storyworlds. The four gestalts also provide an academic approach that unites theory and practice with a unified design vocabulary and an orientation toward the creation of a cultural and creative product that is defined as the storyscape medium.
Storyscapes, such as The Star Wars franchise or the Marvel Universe, consume the lion’s share of our cultural capital (Johnson 2014). Therefore, the development of a consistent vocabulary, a design approach, and an understanding of how they create meaning and define worldviews is critical to our understanding and practice of a new medium (Dena 2009). Starting with the frame of storytelling as a practice and previous aesthetic models such as The Poetics, this research charts the evolution of the storyscape medium across topics of academic
transmedia approaches, principles, affordances, and the connecting or conceptualizing principles that act as gestalts.

▼ Transmedia storytelling, as introduced by Henry Jenkins in his work Convergence Culture (2006), is not without issues. There seems to be a discrepancy between the definition of the term and the way it is implemented. Looking from a shared New Media Studies and Literary Studies perspective this paper aims to explore this discrepancy, its origin and its consequences. It serves as a starting point for further exploration of the term
transmedia storytelling and its implementations.

Mercurius.

▼ As a brand, Marvel has undergone large changes in the past thirty years. They have gone from a popular comic book brand, to bankruptcy, to a licenser of products, to an independent film studio, and finally ended up as the latest branch in the super conglomerate Disney. The brand has been a popular topic of study, as the past few years have seen Marvel grow to be the most lucrative franchise in film history. Past studies have either focused on Marvel's trade story and the economic backdrop that led to such success, or the cultural elements of the films such as plot and theme. In this paper, I want to construct a fusion of these two narratives while taking a close at Marvels past and present. While fusing the cultural and economic elements of the Marvel brand, I have discovered a distinct new paradigm of production and storytelling that will change the relationship consumers have to franchises. What makes Marvel different is that their franchises utilize a spherical model of production. What I mean to suggest by this spherical model is that many franchises are being linked together through character cross overs between films in different franchises. The metaphorical visualization of such a process could be thought of as a sphere, since the many connections can be rotated and perceived from different angles and origins. Why has this strategy not been used in the past, and where did Marvel get the idea for such a bold paradigm shift? I argue that these two questions can only be answered together, and to do so requires a sharp examination of the economic and cultural landscapes surrounding Marvel in the past thirty years. Marvel will fade as time moves forward, but the paradigm they will leave behind is why this study is so important. Already, companies are making an attempt to emulate this model (as will be explained in greater detail). As consumers, we may be witnessing a shift in the way we view franchises. Understanding where this shift came from and what it means for the world of entertainment are questions worth answering as we move into this new era.

▼ Adaptation studies has been a part of film studies since the beginning of cinema itself. However, there is a need for a push in a new direction to incorporate and acknowledge internet-based, web-series adaptations. The purpose of this paper was to come to terms with the current status of adaptation studies as a field and to determine how to best incorporate internet-based media into the previously established framework. Combining a study of adaptation studies with a study of
transmedia and the specificities of internet-based media, I looked at two web-series adaptations of classic novels:
The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, an adaptation of
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, and
The Autobiography of Jane Eyre, an adaptation of
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. Using these two case studies, I outlined the distinctive characteristics of web-series adaptations - their benefits and their drawbacks - as a means of showing how adaptation studies could benefit from an expansion to incorporate the new media our technology is producing.

Fazendo uso do transmedia storytelling e do género
This project has the objective of producing content about the theme Vanlife. In order
to do that, it was carried out an attempt to put together two distinct formats, trying to give rise
to a new way of reporting reality. Making use of transmedia and the documentary genre, I
believe it was possible to create a new format, to which I call Documental Transmedia. To be
able to achieve what I proposed myself to do it was necessary to read and analyse theoretical
texts about transmedia storytelling, participatory culture, the documentary and the van life
lifestyle. The bibliography that I put together was essential to the construction of the theoretical
contextualisation that justifies the whole project. Therefore, the final product presented as its
main objective the creation of a new way of producing content of a documental nature.

▼ Transmedia storyscapes, nonlinear narratives told across many different media platforms, have emerged as important sites of non-traditional reading and writing practices. These narratives enable a type of reading and writing that is subversive to exclusionary Western rhetorics. This study applies a Bitzerian rhetorical analysis to The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, a successful
transmedia storyscape. Bitzer's definitions of exigence, audience, and constraints are challenged when applied to a
transmedia text. This thesis will explore how meaningful redefinitions of key elements within Bitzer's rhetorical situation can further an understanding of
transmedia. This rhetorical analysis will highlight the ways in which Rhetoric and Composition can use
transmedia narratives to make space for important matters of identity and feminist forms of writing as identified by Cixous and Rich.
Transmedia storyscapes are an important, though as of yet largely unconsidered, form of digital rhetorics. This thesis seeks to establish
transmedia storyscapes as a viable genre of writing that successfully embodies feminist principles through the subversion of traditional writing practices.

transmedia intellectual property. '
Transmedia' is an emergent trend in narrative design for commercial entertainment properties that focuses upon building a rich narrative universe wherein multiple stories can be told through a variety of media. This document contains three original artifacts which together constitute the basis for such a commercially salable Intellectual Property: a Codex (aka Story Bible), a Teleplay, and a Game Design Document. The three documents are included as Appendices A, B and C, and are preceded by a text originally constituted as the Prospectus for the project, reformatted and now including a chapter analyzing the production of the artifacts and a bibliography. Technopolis Gotham is intended for the upper range of the Young Adult spectrum, Juniors in High School to College Sophomores, and is written in the Science Fiction genre.

▼ This thesis explores the branding of ABC Family as a home for ‘Millennial’ viewers through its original TV drama programme, Pretty Little Liars. ABC Family emerged during what Amanda Lotz (2007) terms the ‘post-network’ era of American television, a period that has been characterised by fierce inter-network competition and the availability of TV programming on a larger array of platforms, including online platforms. These revolutionary changes have been coupled with the emergence of a commercially desirable demographic known as the ‘Millennials’, a group of young people who are considered to be ‘native’ to this ‘post-network’ environment and whose media use and preferences are challenging networks to revise their strategies and develop programmes that aim to solicit their attention and engagement.
Pretty Little Liars has been specifically constructed to assert the brand identity of ABC Family as a channel “for and about Millennials” (Liesse A2). This programme has sought to distinguish itself within teen-oriented TV drama by incorporating cinematic aesthetics, serial storytelling, narrative complexity, and intertextuality – all of which have been characteristic of adult-oriented ‘high-end’ TV drama in the ‘post-network’ era. Pretty Little Liars has supplemented these efforts to distinguish itself by cultivating a thriving online presence. Important to this online presence are the use of ‘
transmedia storytelling’ and social media. As this thesis demonstrates,
transmedia storytelling and social media have the capacity to significantly extend the experience of a TV programme beyond what is aired on television. Importantly, their deployment in support of Pretty Little Liars has been successful in encouraging consistent viewing of new episodes as they are broadcast, a pattern that persists despite the post-network era’s capacity for delayed viewing on alternative platforms.
This thesis undertakes an in-depth examination of ABC Family’s ‘post-network’ strategy in three chapters, each of which takes a different critical perspective. Chapter One examines the internal and external challenges that contributed to the emergence of ABC Family’s rebranding. Chapter Two analyses Pretty Little Liars as a ‘high end’ teen-oriented TV drama that functions to elevate the profile of ABC Family while simultaneously engaging ‘Millennial’ viewers. Finally, Chapter Three explores the
transmedia extensions of Pretty Little Liars that function to supplement the television narrative in ways that encourage and reward consistent viewing patterns and long-term loyalty.

▼ The art of storytelling has always been subject to change. In this era of media convergence, transmedia storytelling has emerged as a distinct new form of narrative activity taking place across multiple interconnected media platforms. Textual components of a complex narrative, called a ‘world,' are distributed and thereby serialised: Each media platform can be interpreted as one instalment of a serial transmedia world, and the story told in one platform is different from the one in another. The challenge of transmedia world-building is to provide added narrative value as well as perform narrative coherence across platforms. This serial expansion of media and texts requires a new approach to the creation of transmedia narrative worlds, and new forms of collaboration. Creators from different industries have to work together from as early as the initial phase of content development. Research on transmedia storytelling and world-building has thus far neglected the German market; equally, the creative process has received hardly any sustained analytical attention. This thesis sheds light on German transmedia storytelling and world-building by examining the changing art of storytelling against the background of wider changes affecting the content development process. It examines the complex relationship between the creative process and the finished product of a transmedia series by following an interdisciplinary approach, based on poetics, combining the qualitative analysis of existing transmedia texts with interviews with German creators of transmedia series. This study shows that transmedia storytelling and transmedia world-building cannot be analysed separately. It demonstrates that what goes on during the creative process inscribes itself in every aspect of transmedia world-building. The enquiry into German production culture provides new empirical knowledge on current transmedia practices. This study establishes a coherent methodology of textual analysis that can account for the full scope and depth of transmedia stories and worlds.

▼ “The Virtual Big Sister: Television and Technology in
Girls’ Media,” provides a feminist analysis of the early 21st
century convergent media industries in the contexts of
post-feminist girlhood, television, and digital media.
Understanding how media increasingly expands across platforms, it
explores three dominant television brands for girls, Alloy,
Nickelodeon, and The CW and analyzes their
transmedia strategies
that cater to girls’ increased use of digital media. Through a
historical genre analysis, it pays special attention to the
interplay of industrial and cultural motives behind representations
of technological girlhood in specific
transmedia television texts,
contending that the characters, story lines, and industry
discourses of girls’ media culture at this moment are strategic
maneuvers on the part of the corporate girls’ media industry to
regain control at a time of industry instability and increased
consumer autonomy. The media industry confronts an inherently
dynamic and unpredictable youth market by clinging tightly to more
stable gender scripts and mythologies that have served them well. ❧
Drawing from trade papers, the popular press, and academic
publications to frame textual analyses, it considers the various
ways in which the contemporary television industry continues to
produce a limited and contradictory definition of girls in relation
to technology. But even more centrally, it presents a theory of how
the industrial discourses that shape our understandings of girls
and technology—including industrial anxieties, technological
fetishes and phobias, and changing definitions of adolescence,
publicity, and privacy—shape the visual forms, storytelling
practices, and consumption contexts of the early 21st century’s
convergent media culture.

▼ Although interest in fandom studies have grown in recent decades, there remain core issues that are under-addressed, including attempts to theorize about fandom in a general way (as opposed to focusing on individual communities) and the influence of
transmedia elements on existing fan structures and hierarchies. This study explored the ways that fans engage with particular texts and the ways that they engage with one another. Specifically, it considered (1) what it means to be an "authentic" fan, (2) how hierarchies are established within and between fan communities, and (3) the impact that the changing nature of mediated storytelling has on both authenticity and hierarchy. A combination of 25 in-depth semi-structured interviews and participant observation in both an online (TelevisionWithoutPity.com) and offline (Comic-Con International) setting were used to explore these issues. This study uncovered the following: (1) a continuum of fandom, ranging from the non-fan or casual fan at one extreme to the "too big" fan at the other, with several variants on the levels of fandom in between. Participants indicated that there was a point at which one's fandom can become "too big" or go "to far" and the behaviors associated with that level of fandom are less desirable; (2) participants identified several markers used to decide the size of one's fandom: cost, effort exerted, socializing, knowledge, and quoting. Within fan communities, participants pointed to official authority, investment, cultural capital and social capital as means of hierarchy creation. Between fan communities, divisions were established in one of three ways. Participants either differentiated between communities based on the object of fandom itself, based on the behavior of fans common to that group, or based on the medium applicable to that community. Demographic markers such as age and gender were applicable both when referring to the status within fan communities and between them. In keeping with common stereotypes outside fandom, women and young people were commonly highlighted as belonging to lower-status fandoms or engaging in behavior seen as less desirable; (3) participants presented both positive attributes of multiplatform media content or critiques of it or a combination thereof. This research contributes to fandom studies in three ways: (1) by suggesting that hierarchies do indeed exist, and that preferred placement within them is variable, (2) by focusing on multiple, diverse fan communities, as opposed to singular fandoms or communities related to them, and (3) by introducing a sliding scale of levels of fandom on which one can map and access fan behavior and activity, a concept new to the field. It also contributes to Bourdieu's theory of capital by establishing that social capital played a significant role in hierarchy construction.

▼ With continued interest in media convergence,
transmedia storytelling is as prevalent to communication studies as ever. However, research into the effects of
transmedia storytelling remains scarce. Looking at the difference between heavy and light viewers, cultivation theory purports that those who more frequently view violent programming on television are more likely to think the world is a violent place. As of writing, such effects have not yet been extended to
transmedia storytelling. This dissertation fills in those gaps in research by examining the cultivation effects of
transmedia storytelling usage on participants. First, the main themes or messages of content within the Harry Potter Universe (HPU) and Doctor Who Universe (DWU) were measured. Once the primary variables were identified, a questionnaire was developed addressing six of them. Participants were asked questions relating to media usage,
transmedia storytelling usage (particular to the DWU and HPU) and cultivation variables consisting of Machiavellianism, Social Responsibility, Bullying, Ethnocentrism, Classism, and Heroic Violence. Independent sample t-tests were calculated to assess whether or not there was a significant difference between heavy and light
transmedia storytelling users as well as between heavy and light media users for cultivation variable measures. A regression analysis with bootstrapping was calculated to measure the mediating effects of Familiarity and Identification with the DWU/HPU on these groups. Results indicate that
transmedia storytelling usage has a significant impact on how people view the real world. Specifics are discussed within.

▼ Transmedia storytelling became one of the most prevalent buzzwords in the mid- 2000s used to describe a wide array of storytelling forms ranging from entertainment franchises to alternate reality games to any project that told stories across more than one medium. Over time, the term had been diluted so significantly that it has lost most of its meaning, and the opaque discourse has left practitioners, scholars, and audiences alike confused about its true meaning. The Dynamic Story Mosaic: Defining Narrative Strategies in
Transmedia Environments charts this development and offers a typology to identify and explain narrative strategies in multi-platform environments. The typology anchors on the two dimensions of narrative deviation and the number of release events over time; these dimensions are constitutive for the production, reception and marketing and branding of
transmedia projects, and provide a stable basis for analysis and interpretation. Through a blend of analytic, comparative, and descriptive approaches, paired with a number of case studies, this dissertation is a historical analysis of the emergence of
transmedia storytelling and
transmedia discourse, and provides a direction in the analysis of
transmedia projects by providing a typology that remains stable regardless of the future of storytelling in this area.

▼ Abstract
This dissertation suggests that historical presentations should be understood as literary worlds. It studies how they are engaged with in the current media environment. The concept of a world offers a novel way of analysing how presentations are identified as being specifically historical presentations. In the case of the traditional written history, the identification of historical worlds is determined by contrasting their implied world-state at the present moment against the actual world’s world-state at the present moment with the help of counterfactual heuristics. This is done because the evidence of any e.g. past events can only be evaluated in the present as the past itself is inaccessible. The dissertation approaches the evaluation of history from a presentist point of view. It is argued that within the digital media environment, historical presentations are intuitively interpreted as incomplete presentations or as fragments of a larger whole. The functioning of historical presentations is examined as part of a large media network. History’s availability through a variety of media is then analysed through the concepts of transmedia and remediation. It is concluded that history is necessarily mediated and that the current media environment is changing how history is being engaged with.
Tiivistelmä
Väitöskirja ehdottaa, että historiallisia esityksiä tulisi käsitellä kirjallisina maailmoina. Samalla tarkastellaan, kuinka historiallisia esityksiä kohdataan nykyisessä digitaalisessa mediaympäristössä. Maailmojen tarjoama käsitteellinen viitekehys antaa mahdollisuuden analysoida, kuinka historialliset esitykset tunnistetaan juuri historiallisiksi (eikä joksikin muuksi). Perinteisen kirjoitetussa muodossa esiintyvän historian tunnistamisen analyysin kohdalla esitetään, että historiallisten maailmojen implikoidun nykyhetken maailmantilaa verrataan kontrafaktuaalisen heuristiikan avulla aktuaalisen maailman nykyhetken maailmantilaan.

▼ The
transmedia storytelling is a phenomenom recently conceptualized theoretically (JENKINS, 2009), arising from ficcional mediatic products and disseminated as well by the use on other fields. This search aims to analyze how the
transmedia storytellings can be applied to journalism on the basis of an specific genre, the reporting. To that, take as reference theoretical developments performed by brazilian authors (FECHINE et al., 2011, 2012, 2013), on the basis of televisive fiction, which culminated on concepts as transmediation and
transmedia contents and deepened the comprehension and the research in this area. Thenceforth, this study propone a problematization and apropriation of this theoretic support for the journalism field, using, for that, a comprehension of journalistic production on a speech level, as well as its social practices (newsmaking). The empiric research also take two different paths. First, analyze a group of reportings, in which there is transmediation, in order to verifying the configuration of the
transmedia phenomenom - more specifically of the
transmedia storytelling - and its particularities to journalism. Then, develops an investigation, based on the etnographic method, of the productive routine on the special reporting section of the Jornal do Commercio (Recife/PE), aiming to investigate the conditions of transmediation in this range and the practices that favor and difficult the employment of
transmedia storytelling. The result are, therefore, compared and related, with the goal of providing multidimensional view of the phenomenom

transmedia.
