The assignment aims to present the analysis of national and international instruments of regulation of the economic exploration of natural resources and their respective flaws and dichotomies, particularly the paradox between the two main international Agreements: the TRIPS Agreement under the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CDB) with focus on the collective intellectual property of local populations. The text bring general concepts important for the comprehension of the methodological strands used in the research, elucidates the existing instruments for the Traditional Environmental Knowledge- TEK- protection, and shows pointings for the creation of the sui generis protection regime of the TEK. All this with the pivotal purpose of demarcating more precise legal contours about the theme, using the analysis of bibliographic and jurisprudential data from a post-modern methodology perspective, paved in the Jurisprudence of values, in the comprehension and application of the Law through the normative principles from our 1988 Constitution and the International Agreements.

▼ This dissertation is aimed to analyze the changes observed in the social uses of lighthouses along the northeast coast of Brazil. We aim to develop geographical and historical approaches to better understand how these monuments have been used at present, within the new social demands were at the beginning of the XXI century. To perform the analysis we organized a historical retrospective on the occupation and use of coastal areas of Brazil, along with theoretical studies concerning the category of territory, fundamental to our discussions. We emphasize that, in addition to desk research, our study consisted of field research, where we could observe the interactions between local people and the headlights. We believe that this research was justified as it helped to organize a scientific knowledge on the subject, generating theoretical support to re-interpret the headlights while coastal monuments and heritage materials from Brazil. Finally, we found that besides material wealth, the lamps can be interpreted as cultural heritages of people living on the Brazilian coast.

▼ The purpose of this study was to examine the essential elements of a community of practice intended to increase communication and collaboration between
traditional public and charter school leaders. Members of the Los Angeles Cohort of the School Leaders Network participated in this study.
This case study triangulated observation, interview, and document review data to identify the factors that were most beneficial to this particular community of practice. Drawing on the research of
communities of practice, constructivism, and leadership theory, these factors were articulated into five domains with the hope that, with further research, this framework could influence the creation of additional
communities of practice between
traditional public and charter school leaders.
This framework, including indicators and action steps to aid in creating a community of practice, identified five key factors: knowledge, relationships, authenticity, constructivism, and leadership. The convergence of these five domains pointed to two key take-aways:
Communities of practice must create a risk-free environment in which sharing can occur so that participants can use storytelling as a vehicle for the exchange of ideas. Essential in creating this environment is the influence of a skilled facilitator who can drive these conversations. Ultimately, in sharing stories and building community, these
communities of practice are meant to further the cause of a socially just education for all students regardless of the type of schools they attend.

▼ This research analyses the socio-spatial transformations occurring in rural communities of the Municipality of Tibagi (PR), particularly those whose occupational structure presented and / or characteristics common to faxinais. The faxinais are rural communities covered by the Araucaria Forests that make up the land use in a very particular and has two main spaces, a breeding community and the land to plant, separated by a fence or ditch. Was selected for the purpose of deepening the rural communities located west of the highway Transbrasiliana and river Tibagi. Having it as a case study of the Communities Faxinal of Empoçados, located in the district of Alto do Amparo and Faxinal of Mendes in the district of Caetano Mendes. Among the research methodologies used, stands the application of semi-structured questionnaires to older residents of these communities. In the economic dynamics experienced by Tibagi, from its beginnings to the present communities Faxinal had its heyday during the period called "Tropeirismo of Pig‖ in the first decades of the twentieth century. Since then, the modernization of agriculture and society have been introducing homogenizing process that left little room for these traditional communities, leading to breakdown of this tradition in the city.

The development of ecotourism in protected areas has been considered an alternative to mitigation of impacts on biodiversity, the enhancement of nature conservation and the opportunity to include local populations. In this sense, this thesis aimed to comparatively analyze the development of tourist activities in three traditional communities of Núcleo Picinguaba of the Serra do Mar State Park, located in Ubatuba (SP), trying to understand how the traditional populations of each community are engaged in such activities and which one of the three is more articulated to the development of ecotourism. For communities benchmarks studied, were created "Development Evaluation Indicators of the (Eco) Tourism", defined according to some basic premises of ecotourism development and evaluated from semi-structured interviews with local actors and field observations. It was concluded that the community better structured for the development of ecotourism is the Quilombo da Fazenda, although most of the residents interviewed were not awarded the benefits of the activity. The performance of the park is more restricted to the work done by environmental monitors, who work mainly in the Praia da Fazenda and…

▼ This thesis is an ethnographic study of Taulli, a “Peruvian peasant community” (PPC) in the highland region of Ayacucho. PPCs are a paradigmatic type of Andean community with distinctive communal features and great historical significance. The thesis offers a detailed case study that contributes to an understanding of the maintenance, current role, and functioning, of these communities in the early Twenty-first Century. Additionally, this case study reassesses key theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of Andean cultures, defending the ongoing validity of community ethnographies and many aspects of 1960s-80s research in the Andean region (particularly its “long-termist” approaches). Specifically, the thesis examines the current role that the community (as a PPC) plays for the Taullinos -such as its respective advantages and disadvantages- in a context where far-reaching social change coexists with rich local traditions. On the one hand, it is argued that the community has become a channel through which Taullinos acquire access to new services and benefits, largely resulting from increased state intervention through unprecedented development-related initiatives. Despite their limitations and mixed results, it is shown how these initiatives partially adapt to and reinforce the local PPC status. The combination of this state intervention and other factors of change, especially emigration, are deepening local integration into national society and have brought remarkable improvements to the quality of life of Taullinos. Nonetheless, such processes are also hampered by severe problems and challenges, largely linked to a legacy of social exclusion and discrimination. On the other hand, it is argued that the community and local traditions continue to offer Taullinos a strong sense of identity and social cohesion, and some important practical advantages, in the context of social change. In particular, through their participation in the local communal organisation and ritual celebrations, which are key foci of this study. Furthermore, it is demonstrated how local traditions are dynamically reinvented to serve as a primary channel through which Taullinos experience and accommodate change. Therefore, although the local communal system is demanding and has many limitations, Taullinos unanimously accept and identify with it, and with the PPC status that guarantees its continuity.

▼ Indigenous
communities are among some of the most vulnerable to climate change impacts, particularly with regards to their water resources. Planning effectively to remain resilient within existing socio-cultural, political, and economic constraints requires an assessment of the climate data and information needs most pressing in Indigenous
communities. Integrating diverse Indigenous stakeholder perspectives and knowledges with western-science is fundamental in creating comprehensive climate adaptation plans for Indigenous
communities. This process is also very complex due to the complex interconnections between Indigenous
communities and the hydrologic systems in which they depend. This study seeks to support such integration through the use of a participatory research design that assesses data and information needs critical to enhancing climate adaptation on reservation lands in the Southwestern United States. This study outlines the development of a survey instrument implemented at the 2016 and 2017 Native Waters on Arid Lands Tribal Climate Summit and highlights the results of statistical tests using responses to the 33 Likert-type scale questions. Study participants include tribal government workers, agriculturalists, researchers, and outreach professionals interested in climate adaptation on reservation lands. Results from this regional study indicate that more than 75% of the 98 voluntary participants are Native American and 83% reside in either the Great Basin or Colorado River Basins. Participants prioritize data and information that serve to: assess climate change impacts, enhance food security, and integrate
Traditional Knowledge of their
communities into reservation-wide adaptation planning and action. In this data-scarce region, respondents prioritize water quality data as their highest need followed by streamflow and temperature data. Results from this study may assist in collaborative socio-hydrologic research efforts with Indigenous
communities by reducing assumptions about climate data and information needs. Furthermore, regional needs assessments with Indigenous
communities related to climate impacts are rare relative to case studies due to the extensive diversity that exists among these
communities. This study includes a discussion on ethical collaboration when conducting such research, with special attention to protecting the data sovereignty of Indigenous
communities when sharing research information with the general public.

▼ Traditional Knowledge (TK) has previously been considered a '
subject' in the public domain,
unworthy of legal protection. However, the last few decades have witnessed increased
discussions on the need to protect the knowledge of indigenous peoples for their economic
sustenance, the conservation of biodiversity and modern scientific innovation. Questions
remain as to how TK can best be protected through existing, adapted or sui generis legal
frameworks.
Based on an examination of the formal knowledge-protection mechanisms (i.e. the existing
intellectual property system), this mini-thesis contends that these existing systems are
inadequate for protecting TK. As a matter of fact, they serve as veritable platforms for
incidences of biopiracy. It further argues that the many international initiatives designed to
protect TK have so far failed owing to inherent shortcomings embedded in them.
Furthermore, a comparative assessment of several national initiatives (in New Zealand, South
Africa and Kenya) supports an understanding that several domestic efforts to protect TK have
been rendered ineffective due to the insurmountable challenge of dealing with the
international violations of local TK rights. It is therefore important that on-going international
negotiations for the protection of TK, including the negotiations within the World Intellectual
Property Organisation's Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic
Resources,
Traditional Knowledge and Folklore (IGC), do not adopt similar approaches to
those employed in previous initiatives if TK must be efficiently and effectively protected.
This mini-thesis concludes that indigenous peoples possess peculiar protection mechanisms
for their TK within the ambit of their customary legal systems and that these indigenous
mechanisms are the required anchors for effective global protections.

The study of the relationship between the culture of traditional communities and law implies having a wide perspective, combining a comparative and an international approach, as the concepts are varied and the instruments diverse. In Brazil, a country with a great cultural diversity, the need for the protection of popular culture is a growing, justified and necessary demand. France, on the other hand, has both the benefit of being the birthplace of copyright and possessing, too, a part of traditional culture. In addition, since the 1970s, the international indigenous movement gradually took a growing place in international debates. Thus, two directions rise attempting to protect the culture of traditional communities. Firstly, the possible use of traditional instruments for the protection of intellectual property rights will result from the international negotiating processes. In addition, in recent years, the tendency of elaborating a specific protection for traditional culture has emerged. In this perspective, the comparative analysis of the French and Brazilian legal systems can allow us to broaden our reflection on regimes whose effective implementation seems to be particularly complex. This thesis prompts us to question the reasons for this dysfunction by providing a study on several normative instruments. The result is a three-level analysis (international, national and, in some cases, local) aiming to highlight the major challenges of…

▼ This study has the objective to analyze the impact of public policies for the fishing sector in the State of Pernambuco, Brazil, from 2003 to 2007. We decided to investigate with specific objectives the ocurrence of public policies in countryside water fishing communities; to identify the existing relation between fishing activities and agriculture in some river communities of Pernambuco countryside, and more specifically in the Municipalities of Catende, Cumaru, Ibimirim, Petrolândia and Jatobá, focusing in this comparison the route of those communities and how they started to practice the fishing activity. Also, the co-existence way of both activities fishing and agriculture. This is an exploratory research in its methodological route, bibliography, internet information, visits to Federal Government, State and Non-Governamental Organizations to know each of their objectives and analyze the documents related to their projects and programs to the researched public. Afterwards we visited communities, we did direct observations, informal chats where we used the Field notebook to record experience in communities, and finally, semi-structured interviews. The researched detected that public policies were in 26 thought or done projects from 2003 to 2007 for the communities which make their living by fishing in countryside Waters. But, its majority is still without social or economical sustainability, the projects were with predetermined time, begining, middle and ending. Those who live on fishing, we caracterized them as craft farmer fishermen, because fishing activity is for some of them a source of income and also feeding, linked to periods of rain, the development of selfconsumer agriculture. So, we came to a conclusion that, in the researched period, there was an advance and great achievements from public policies in the sector for craft fishermen in general, when compared with previous periods before the one chosen for this research. But, public policies for the several productive systems of family and fisherman agriculture are also necessary and yet defective, especially when it is the activity of fishing in countryside waters.

The objective of this study is to analyze the process of cultural reconversion experienced by the Negro Rural Quilombola Community of Leitão/Umbuzeiro, in the backlands of Pernambuco, during their hybridous history in a massive and hegemonic culture.
The vines (lianas) are exploited by traditional communities that require increased use of these products as an alternative for reconciling biodiversity conservation and exploitation of natural resources. The supply chain includes the activities of these plants from the extraction in the forest to end use in the form of handicraft. There is a wealth and abundance of lianas in the region of Porto Alegre, with great diversity of biological attributes. Thus, this study aims to analyze performance and economic aspects of the production chain that involves the manufacture and sale of handicrafts made from lianas and examine the structure and dynamics of three species of lianas used by Kaingangs in Porto Alegre. To characterize the collection strategy, identification and use of vines, field trips were conducted with families Kaingang following the methodology of participant observation, to assess the trade craft identificas 13 families were selling the main selling point of the city of Porto Alegre / RS, the monitoring of sales occurred from September 2008 to August 2009, to check the availability of lianas Kaingang exploited by the community survey was conducted in four remaining peri-urban and over 20…

This dissertation is the result of a research of the socio-biodiversity threatening in an estuarine zone in the Dendê Coast, in the Bahia State south coast. The study area, one of the most preserved in the Brazilian coast, distinguishes for its peculiar landscape; its biological diversity composed of a mosaic of ecosystems of transitions between Atlantic Forest and marine environment, highlighted by mangroves, sand bank and coral reefs ; and for its cultural diversity, consisting of a number of fisherman and reminiscent of slaves communities. The maintenance of this diversity is due in certain degree to the geographical isolation caused by the natural and anthropological limits imposed to the local landscape and to the sustainable use of natural resources that is an…

Environmental and cultural diversity represents an intrinsic value for itself, independently from its incorporation into a globalized urban-industrial culture. To counter the actual global socio-environmental crisis, it is important to better understand the rationalities and lifestyle modes which are closer to a sustainable dealing with nature, as it is, for example, the case of traditional societies. A two-sided learning process between proprietors of traditional knowledge and of scientific knowledge can lead to the improvement of life quality in traditional communities and can help to avoid that the incorporation of these communities into the market economy causes the degradation of its diversity. In this sense, we are on the search for a social ecology. This research evaluates communitarian tourism as a means to contribute to cultural conservation and the improvement of life quality of traditional societies, as well as the stabilization of biodiversity in its territories. It refers to the people and land properties of Faxinal communities in Paraná. It tries to avoid an imposition of the researchers perspective throughout the analysis by using methods of participant observation and unstructured interviews in the communities of Lageado de Baixo, located in the municipality of Mallet, and Lageado de Mello, in the municipality of Rio Azul. These Faxinais dispose of various resources…

▼ In the early 1980 the alternative tourism begins to gain strength in Brazilian market. This activity shows problems caused by mass tourism that explore fragile environment in an unthinking way putting the customs and habits of the local communities under threat as well as the local flora and fauna. In Paran? State there is a great potential to develop this kind of tourism activity in traditional communities. These communities are named faxinais, where is developed a community production with a joint area to raise animals in an environment of Arauc?ria Forest and private areas to plant. Nowadays there are about 44 faxinal areas in Center ?South of the State, 07 of them are located in Prudent?polis. For this reason the purpose of this research is to evaluate the touristic potential in faxinal communities of this borough. There are already areas around the faxinais exploring ecological tourism (visit to the waterfalls) and also the adventure tourism (rapel, trekking). Through Community Tourism, a tourist segmentation that fits in the alternative tourism and above all prioritizes the local community well-being, respecting their limits and desires and allowing that local people carry out the tourism management. So the intention of this study is the inclusion of the faxinal areas in this system. For this two complex of touristic narratives have been identified: ethnic(typical food, costumes, traditions, songs, dance, religion, everyday work) and the economic and technological history (subsistence agriculture, wood and erva-mate extraction, tropeirismo, pig rising and tobacco agribusiness). It is believed that this segmentation can mean an economical improvement for these communities and also the reservation of their cultural environment.

▼ A study was conducted in two pastoral communities in the reserve grazing areas. These
were the reserve grazing pastures, used by the Gogo of Makang'wa, central Tanzania and
Maasai of Tingatinga, northern Tanzania, as a strategy to alleviate acute dry seasonal feed
shortage. For each study area it composed of part I on socio-economics information and
part II on primary production and ecology.
The data from part I indicated that households had sufficient number and right categories of
people to perform roles and responsibilities on the basis of sex and age. The results of age
and education showed that most of the household heads were old people, who still held to
traditions and customs. They had difficulties in perceiving present day technological
approaches; they were not easily agreeable to changes compared to young people. There
was a significant difference (P <0.05) between ownership of land for cultivation and reserve
grazing areas in the two ~!U~y,area. In Makang'wa, 71% of the respondents indicated that
land was mainly under cultivation while in Tingatinga, 72% of the respondents indicated
that land is set aside for reserve grazing. On average Tingatinga owned large herds with an
average of90 cattle, 28 sheep and 44 goats per household, while in Makang'wa the average
was 48 cattle, 9 sheep and 15 goats per household. The major problems affecting livestock
production in the study areas were feed shortage and diseases, as indicated by the
respondents declaring the problems 60% in Makang'wa and 58% in Tingatinga.
Data on part II of the study revealed that on average forage production was higher in
reserve grazing areas, i.e., 3677 kgDM/ha in Tingatinga and 2505 kgDM/ha in Makang'wa.
There was a significant difference (P < 0.01) in forage production between sites. However,
there was no significant difference (P > 0.05) between the locations.
There was a significant difference of woody species between sites (P < 0.01). On average
forage samples from Makang'wa and Tingatinga had low values of energy (6.81 ME
Mj/kgDm and 6.92 Mj/kgDM) and crude protein (5.1% and 5.5%) respectively. It was
evident that woody species, if well managed, increased the diversity of forage resources and
forage quality. The results showed that the forage species studied in reserve grazing areas
cannot sustain livestock productivity all the year. A proper mixture of grass and legumes
will result in forage of higher yield and better quality to support livestock.
This traditional practices provide the basis and opportunities for development of improved
silvopastoral systems. Though traditional range management is blamed for not being
environmentally friendly, the results indicate that there is potential for now and in the future

▼ The goal of the current study was to describe the organizational and institutional foundations within
traditional rural
communities that facilitate implementation of participatory community poverty reduction programs. The focus was on
communities within or adjacent to protected areas. A case study research approach was used to assess community mobilization, participation and analytical capacity and also to evaluate community groups and organizations for their competence to be local implementing agents of poverty reduction programs. The research findings showed that inadequate skills and organizational levels limited the ability of
communities to fully utilize protected areas as poverty reduction initiatives. Key determinants of community participation were the ability to mobilize and also to undertake detailed analysis of local situations. Community mobilization depended on the relationship between the mobilizing agent and the community, social cohesion and gender. Analytical capacity was influenced mostly by the level of education, prior experience and gender. Interestingly, community groups that had the highest potential to be implementing agents, had strong ties to
traditional institutions, suggesting that groups with well recognized power and legitimacy within the community are better positioned to facilitate implementation of community poverty eradication initiatives. A number of indicators of community competence were identified and these were used to develop an analytical framework that can be used as a diagnostic tool for determining community competence.

The circulation of traditional knowledge is a legal issue that has been the subject of many reflections and developments in various forums since the 1990s.Beyond the evolutions in international law and national legislation, very little attention has been paid to the normative contributions of researchers and Indigenous people. Yet, they are among the social actors who are most directly concerned by the issue of the circulation of traditional knowledge and potentially the most aware of the challenges in this area. Their contributions, however, remain in many cases largely underestimated and unknown. This is why, as part of our thesis, we have embarked on the collection, description and analysis of two major types of contributions : 1- Comprehensive approaches undertaken at the level of research institutions and Indigenous institutions to monitor relationships between indigenous peoples and researchers (eg ethical codes or research protocols) ; 2- more specific instruments at the scale of specific research projects through contractual practices between the Aboriginal communities and researchers. We managed to identify 121 instruments among which 65 general frameworks and 57 contracts.

▼ Carissa lanceolata (conkerberry) is a perennial woody shrub used in traditional medicine by indigenous communities in Western Australia, the Northern Territory and Queensland for various medical conditions such as toothache, respiratory infections and the cleaning of sores, which all strongly indicate an antibacterial activity. A literature review revealed that the wood of this plant possesses significant antibacterial activity, which was found to be related to the presence of eudesmane type sesquiterpenes. C. edulis and C. carandus are frequently used in other traditional systems of medicine in different parts of the world, and thus have also been investigated for bioactive compounds and pharmacological properties. Some of these were found to be in line with the main findings of this work. Carissa lanceolata root was shown to exhibit significant antibacterial activity against both Gram negative and Gram positive organisms. A micro-broth dilution assay was performed on 96-well plates using resazurin as an indicator for microbial growth of Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus. Bioassays carried out in this work showed that crude extracts of root bark and wood, particularly their polar constituents were more active against the four strains of bacteria tested.Chemical investigation of the root bark revealed that it contains a volatile oil, which was isolated by steam distillation as well as solid phase micro extraction. It was found to consist of a single compound, which was identified as 2'-hydroxy acetophenone. The identity of this compound was confirmed by GC/MS and 1H NMR spectroscopy. Furthermore, the eudesmane-type sesquiterpene, carissone, was isolated from the root bark DCM and root wood hexane extracts. Its chemical identity was confirmed by IR, 1 [superscript] H and 13 [superscript] C NMR spectroscopy. The lignan, carinol, on the other hand, was isolated from the moderately polar fractions of the root wood MeOH extract. The obtained IR and 1 [superscript] H NMR data as well as Rf values all correspond to the literature. Two other yet unidentified compounds were isolated, but further studies into their chemistry and antibacterial activity were not possible in this current study. The antibacterial activity of the isolated compounds was considerable, with 2'-hydroxy acetophenone exhibiting the strongest effect, followed by carinol and then carissone.

▼ The purpose of this study is to understand the learning of African American pastors, specificallyhow they learn their roles and the means to fulfill them. A qualitative approach was employed as the methodology to gain insight from the
perspective of the pastors themselves. The focus of the interview questions were the means of the pastors learning and were conducted at the pastor’s churches. The pastors were asked what roles they learned in their jobs, and how they learned theroles.
The influence of the governance structure of their denominations was important to the learning and contributed to a support system for the pastors as well. The pastors were asked what role socio-historical context may have on their learning. Context was
believed to play a very important part in learning according to the pastors. Finally, the pastors were asked how they learned their roles. Interviews were conducted with ten pastors from Baptist, Methodist, and Pentecostal churches. Follow up questions
were asked and visits were made to the pastor’s churches to observe a service. Based on the data from the interviews and field notes, this study describes how learning takes place and makes suggestions for helping pastors learn their roles. The findings
of the study revealed the importance of experience, structure, and history in the development of roles as well as the pastors’ learning of the roles and how to fulfill them. While formal education was important to the pastors, they believed the actual
roles that were most important to the church they discovered in the action of doing the job. Situational learning, specifically workplace learning, was employed to contrast the learning of the pastors and other professionals. The theory help describe the
process of learning that the pastors describe in their interview. Through personal interaction with other minister, mentors, and doing the job itself, the pastors learned what the spoken and unspoken roles were and mapped a strategy for fulfilling those
roles. The pastors learned to navigate through the interpersonal issues in churches to discover their roles.

▼ The study of traditional settlements is unique in its own, as it consists of the traditional settlements’ dual dependence, both from their past and from their present. Similar cases deserve the attention of communities because of the importance of their historical presence over time and their continuity and survival in the present as living organisms. The study is expected to investigate questions related to the socio-economic and characteristics of traditional settlements, which will enable us to look at the trends that have developed over time. We will also explore the mechanisms through which the viability of traditional settlements is achieved during the transition from the traditional regime to modern reality. The present work will record their evolution over time from the 1940s until present day. Firstly, this research will emphasize on spatial planning and the policies implemented by the Greek state regarding the settlements. The legal framework governing this type of settlements will then be examined. The research will also lay emphasis on the mechanisms through which the viability of the traditional settlements is achieved during the transition from the traditional regime to the modern reality. The research focuses on the Zagori area (prefecture of Ioannina), in the region of Epirus, in Northwestern Greece. The study of Traditional Settlements is of particular importance, as their development depends both on the past, as well as in the present, and on the prevailing societal trends relating to their survival, and evolution, either into thriving tourist attractions, or traditional living history museums. This thesis introduces Zagori, from the Second World War, and up to this day, and analyses through digital maps, and by using GIS technology, the results of spatial indicators, such as population changes per ten years, employment and unemployment rate, indicator of population ageing, percentage of new buildings, etc., describing the socioeconomic dimension in the study area, with regard to its sustainable development and social cohesion. An enterprise survey, consisting of twenty-seven (27) closed and open questions, has been conducted with one hundred employer questionnaires, aiming to collect as much information as possible about businesses operating in the study area. Our aim has been to understand why traditional settlements either remain unchanged over time and grow, or simply turn into museum remnants of the past, without social life and economic activity. The results showcase the anthropogeography to be weakened, aged and small. A negative balance of economic activities does not allow the inhabitants of the settlements to develop agro-tourism, or other agricultural activities (Zagori is famous for their unbelievable natural beauty, its unique architecture and long history).

▼ This is a study of community protest against Barberton Mines (Pty) Ltd. It is a study of conflict and conflict resolutions.
Barberton Mines (Pty) Ltd is one of the three gold mining companies in Barberton, and is in dire need of a bankable community/stakeholder relation management strategy, which should at least reduce, if not eliminate, the endless violent community protests against its operations.
Methodologically, the study is predicated on a qualitative approach backed by oral interviews and the use of a survey. The study reveals that as much as the community appreciates Barberton Mines for its delivery in socio-economic development initiatives, Barberton Mines’ recruitment and procurement departments are not doing any justice in terms of preferred policy in favour of the locals/Barberton community. This is a key source of conflict. The results also reveal that the Barberton Mines Transformation Trust (BMTT), a vehicle established for socioeconomic development in Barberton, is considered to be ineffective by the community and is one of the causes of the conflict. The resolutions of the conflict include the effective implementation of the mining legislation and unrolling of the Mining Charter. The effectiveness and lack thereof of these conflict resolutions are subjected to analysis in this study.
