▼ For a long time since ancient history international trade was used to exchange capital, goods, and service. There are several modes of transportation but people have been using marine transport as a main transportation mode for certain types of good and commodities in global trades. The pioneers of marine transports in Greek, Roman, and China used sea routes to sell and buy goods for their respective kingdoms. Until now more than 80 percent of transporting goods around the world is still by sea even though the speed of sea transportation is much slower compared to air or ground transportation. Since the most disadvantage of marine transport is its slow speed, what can be done to decrease the time of transportation by sea. ❧ Suez Canal connecting the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea, and the Panama Canal connecting Caribbean Ocean and the Pacific Ocean are the best examples of the man‐made canals that show the necessity and the importance of what the alternative sea routes could do. This dissertation study presents a new route of man‐made canals that could make the shipping faster and more effective for Asian Region (between Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean). ❧ At the present time, transportation between Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean are mainly from the existing three routes: Malacca Route, Sundra Route, and Lombok Route. By introducing a man‐made canal herein called “Siam Canal” which will be located in Thailand. Siam Canal which connects the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand can shorten the travel distance between Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean up to 3,500 kilometers or 7 days of travel time. ❧ This dissertation research presents preliminary study of Siam Canal which will include the proposal of Siam Canal, the potential benefits using Siam Canal, the initial design of the proposed Siam Canal, environmental problems, and the economic and engineering feasibility study of the proposed Siam Canal. Environmental impacts due to the construction of the “Siam Canal” are addressed. The wave and tide condition, before and after the construction of the “Siam Canal” are simulated by a finite element numerical model for the Gulf of Thailand region. ▼ Considering the vital part which the construction industry plays in the economy of South Africa, as well as the objectives of the reconstruction and development thereof, the failure of contractors, despite all the interventions to identify and eradicate the root of the problem, is a matter of great concern. In November 2000, the Construction Industry Development Board Act (2000) was promulgated which led to the inception of the cidb with a mandate to implement an integrated strategy for the reconstruction, growth and development of the construction industry. The matter of contractor development has been widely studied and investigated since the inception of the cidb in 2000. However, the purpose of this study was to focus on the business problems faced by Grade 5 to 7 CE / GB Potential Emerging Contractors, with regard to construction organisations that make the move from small to medium businesses. The intention was to contribute to the successful transition from small to medium businesses by means of structured initiatives. In order to achieve this, a new business strategy must be adopted. It was therefore necessary to extensively consider the surface and core competencies required for making the transition. Liquidity problems that the transition entails were explored, as well as contractor misconceptions with regard to contractor development. In the course of the study, unethical practices and entitlement issues experienced in the built environment and the effect of this on contractor success were explored. The study aimed to recommend a structured framework for co-ordination between assistance, mentorship, contractor needs, client departments, cidb NCDP best practice guidelines and the most important of all, self-empowerment. This study further endeavoured to find possible solutions regarding the assistance requirements, as well as self-empowering objectives for emerging contractors taking the challenging step from small to medium business and by implication, becoming sustainable contractor enterprises in Grades 6 to 8. Political imperatives need to be weighed against the high unemployment rate. The Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF) indicates that there are not enough sustainable contracting opportunities to allocate to Contractor Development Programmes (CDPs). This is aggravated by the tendency that too many hopeful aspirant entrepreneurs, lacking construction surface and core competencies, are seeing the built environment as an easy industry to enter. Just less than 50% of cidb registered contractors exited the register of active contractors during the last ten years ending 2nd quarter 2015. 45% exited during the last five years. This indicates that there is a serious sustainability problem in the built environment. Considering the GFCF contractor opportunities there are too many cidb registered contractors. ▼ Within educational research, postsecondary vocational education receives relatively little attention; within this sector, trades education is studied even less frequently. This research sought to address this gap through exploring the transition of master tradespeople who have completed a first apprenticeship in their trade and who then undertake a second apprenticeship as trades teachers. The research question explored: the motivation for career change; pre-existing competencies brought to the role of teaching; the methods used to learn to teach; negotiation of a new vocational identity; and sources of satisfaction in the teaching role. Using a constructivist paradigm, this qualitative-dominant crossover sequential mixed methods study surveyed trades teachers via a newly created instrument, distributed electronically to three Western Canadian polytechnic institutions. In addition to analysis of the full data set, the survey data were divided by respondents’ years of teaching to look for possible changes with experience. A summary was shared with survey participants who were willing to participate in follow-up discussions. Interpretation panel meetings were held with these volunteers; discussions were transcribed and analyzed for themes, comparing the results of this qualitative data set to that of the quantitative survey results. As the qualitative and quantitative data were combined, the following key insights about this group emerged. Tradespeople moving to trades teaching are motivated primarily by two factors. They take pride in their trade and want to see the craft continue through teaching and mentoring apprentices on a full-time basis. Secondly, they seek an improved work-life balance through teaching and will accept lower remuneration as a teacher in order to have more time for family and life outside of work. Tradespeople bring a strong sense of having been a teacher, as an aspect of being a journeyperson, to the role of trades teacher. They are self-reflective and wish to improve as teachers. They rate themselves as stronger in the general abilities, attitudes and traits associated with teaching than in pedagogical knowledge and skills competencies, but learn in these areas to gain confidence in their overall teaching competency over time. In learning to be a teacher, trades teachers prefer to replicate the informal learning methods of the apprenticeship model: mentorship, discussions, self-study, and trial and error. They reject overly-formal or academic training as impractical, not helpful toward improving teaching, and an expression of the lower status accorded to trades teaching within higher education. The transition from tradesperson to trades teacher is not a distinct change or linear process. It is an evolution, growing from the role of teacher imbedded within journeyperson, and subsuming the trades knowledge gained through apprenticeship and practice, to become a new identity that makes one more than a teacher, more than a tradesperson, but rather a teacher of the trade. ▼ Writing from the end of the seventeenth century through the mid-eighteenth century in England, the fair triumvirate of wit—consisting of Aphra Behn, Delarivier Manley, and Eliza Haywood—are pivotal figures in the history of feminist literary recovery. What has been key to their contemporary popularity is that each used print to reach their audiences. Yet for women who consistently printed their work, little is known about their publishing practices: how they chose their booksellers, how much they were paid, or what input they may have had over design. My dissertation recovers this history and argues that a historically accurate account of women’s publishing reshapes literary studies, economic history, bibliography, and book history. Three chapters explore the relationship between authors and booksellers and the influence that tradesmen have on the development of women’s writing. As financiers, booksellers had economic motivations for encouraging the feminine personas that Behn, Manley, and Haywood created to sell their work. These personas are often described as individual constructions, but booksellers provided the paratextual space and augmented authors’ textual choices through graphic design and advertising. This conclusion emphasizes that female professional authors were as equally influenced by their economic status as their gender, and I determine that a nuanced interpretation of the intersections of class and gender is necessary for authors who inhabit the literary marketplace. I conclude that feminist recovery work was essential for bringing Behn, Manley, and Haywood back into the academy, but it operates with what Kathryn R. King describes as “feminist models of marginalisation.” These models are useful in discursive and social settings, but they do not translate to a book market that valued and courted women’s efforts. Discursive models also participate in their own form of marginalization by neglecting to explore the non-textual material work of the book trade that these authors engaged in. This project demonstrates how a broader view of women’s authorship that accounts for the rhetoric of print, what Lisa Maruca calls “text work,” recasts them as actively engaged with the business of books. ▼ This thesis is a comparative study of trades unions in the conscription debate in Australia and New Zealand during the Great War. The governments of Australia and New Zealand looked to conscription to maintain the supply of men in the war effort. However, when they declared conscription for overseas service was necessary, most unions opposed it, although some unions in both countries were divided over the issue. New Zealand’s unions fought for the repeal of the Military Service Act, which compelled men between the ages of 20 and 46 years to register for overseas military service. Australian unions fought for the defeat of two plebiscites conducted by the government of the day regarding the invocation of conscription. Several factors influenced unions to oppose conscription. Through the use of trades union and government archival material, particularly minutes of meetings, correspondence, annual reports, conference minutes, diary entries, government documents, pamphlets, biographies, union and contemporary newspapers, it is possible to establish why unions took their stance. In this thesis the factors that shaped the stance of unions on conscription are presented; including the circumstances of the formation of unions, their early history and influences, and their attitudes to compulsory military training. Evidence is also presented regarding the relationship between the union movement and the government of each country, and it is posited that these relationships were influential in the outcome of the conscription debate in the respective countries. Unions in both countries campaigned vigorously to stop conscription. Only in Australia were they successful. When war was declared in 1914, unionists from both countries balanced union beliefs against other factors. Unionists were concerned that this war was a class war, incorporating inequality of sacrifice. Unionists were also concerned about provisions for families of those serving, the cost of living and loss of civil liberties; none of which were addressed by the governments of the day in the opinion of unionists. Unionists feared economic and industrial conscription. Other unionists simply lacked a belief in war and opposed it. Unionists, in general, opposed the manufacture of war materials. However, this war was also considered to be a necessary evil. Opposition to conscription was counter-balanced with patriotism and belief in the evil of Germany, with the result that many unionists enlisted voluntarily for overseas service. When conscription became the issue, unionists in both countries opposed it. The New Zealand government legislated for a Military Service Act which the unions attempted to have repealed, but in Australia the government held two plebiscites on conscription to determine the wishes of the populace. The Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry is increasingly challenged with improving the efficacy of project team performance through collaborative working arrangements. Collaborative working arrangements such as integrated project delivery, design-build, and project partnering are all comprised of interorganizational project teams. These teams, according to relational governance theory, generally function with flexibility, solidarity, mutual respect, and openly share information. Recent research shows that collaborative and cohesive teams are perpetuated by strategies to facilitate team integration methods. Efficient knowledge sharing and processing systems, also called transactive memory systems (TMS), are integral to cohesive project teams and their tasks coordination. Although the AEC literature is widespread on the importance of team integration and cohesion, little emphasis is placed on the effects of goal alignment practices and its relationship to performance outcomes. Thus, this research aims to explore this relationship along with the moderating effects of TMS in the context of partnered-projects by investigating interorganizational AEC project teams. Some goal alignment characteristics of partnered-projects are generally in the form of partnering workshops, establishing clear goals and objectives, and the early involvement of key stakeholders (e.g., owner, designer, contractor, subcontracts). The link between partnering practices and project success dominates AEC literature, yet the elements of partnering practice should be examined separately. This research asserts collaborative project delivery practices affect goal alignment and performance in AEC project teams. Furthermore, this research points out how behavioral attributes (i.e., transactive memory systems) of partnered-project teams are important to successful project delivery on AEC projects. To achieve the aim of this study, data were collected from six case study projects and 125 participants using web-based surveys. Project information was accessed via partnering documents collected from key project stakeholders. A mixed methods approach was followed where 1) Qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis and case study tactics including pattern-matching and cross-case synthesis; and, 2) Quantitative data were analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis and multivariate regression analysis. The theoretical contribution resulting from this research help explain the variation in interorganizational project team performance by examining key behavioral attributes emanating from organizational theory. ▼ Ground improvement work is crucial in enhancing the characteristics of weak soils commonly encountered in Civil Engineering, and one such technique commonly used is vibro-stone columns. An assessment of the effectiveness of such an approach is critical to determine whether the quality of the works meets the prescribed requirements. Conventional quality testing suffers limitations including: limited coverage (both area and depth) and problems with sampling quality. Traditionally quality assurance measurements use laboratory and in-situ invasive and destructive tests. However geophysical approaches, which are typically non-invasive and non-destructive, offer a method by which improvement profiles can be measured in a cost effective way. Of these seismic surface waves have proved the most useful to assess vibro-stone columns, however, to date much of the previous work conducted has focussed on field based observations making detailed evaluation of this approach difficult. This study evaluates the application of surface waves in characterizing the properties of laterally heterogeneous soil, specifically for using in the quality control of vibro-stone column. Three models were employed which began with a simple model and extended finally to complex model: (1) concrete mortar was used to establish the method, equipment and its system, (2) pilot test on a small scale soft kaolin to adopt a model vibro-stone column and (3) main test contained a configuration of vibro-stone column in soft Oxford clay. A generic scaled-down model of vibro-stone column(s) was constructed. Measurements were conducted using different arrays of column configuration, using sand to simulate stone material. This idealized set of laboratory conditions were used to provide guidelines for the interpretation of field measurements. The phase velocity obtained from the controlled tests showed close iii agreement to those reported in literature and with those generated through empirical correlations with vane shear test. The dispersive curve demonstrated an increased phase velocity with increasing wavelength for the measurements on the clay (between columns), and decreased phase velocity with increasing wavelength for the measurements on the column. More interestingly, the results showed that in the characterization of lateral nonhomogeneities, the phase velocity versus wavelength relationship varies on stone columns of different diameters and densities. This illustrated that the shear modulus profiles are influenced by the effective region that spans both the lateral and depth axes, and also demonstrated how the results can be influenced by the positioning of sensors with respect to the survey target. This research demonstrates how Rayleigh waves can be used for quality assurance when constructing vibro-stone columns.

▼ Abstract The research is about systematic measurement of labour productivity to indicate whether construction labor productivity is low in the case of building projects in Addis Ababa, and if it is; to assess productivity problems and their causes. A review of other country studies, project reports and consultation with practitioners were made to identify the productivity problem areas and process factors for inclusion into the study instruments. A case study of seven projects on three construction trades, namely concrete, steel reinforcement placing and masonry works, revealed that 11 front line factors are responsible for low productivity; the major ones in the order of their rank are lack of materials, instruction delay, rework, change of workers, lack of tools and less work load and congestion. The research result showed that nearly all projects (except project 5) have a productivity performance ability ratio (PAR) greater than one indicating that the studied crews’ productivity performance was low. In addition opinion survey of foremen on the amount of effective productive time of workers showed that on the average the studied craftsmen spend only 56% of the total paid time. An open system theory of management was applied to identify the major managerial causes of productivity, which resulted in four factors contributory to low labor productivity; these are: external precondition factors, technical management sub system, managerial systems and organizational behavior factors. That is; The causal problems for low productive performance was analyzed and it was found that unfulfilled conditions from project site external bodies, lack of project management systems, poor technical management in areas of developing productivity standards and construction methods, average leadership efficiency and low project culture towards workers satisfaction are responsible for low productivity performance. The notion that organisations are made up of interdependent relationships has led researchers to study more carefully the impacts that informal intraorganisational networks have on organisational life. Using a Bourdieu-based theoretical platform, this research investigates the relationship between context and informal intraorganisational networks in small-to-medium sized organisations in a New Zealand setting. An owner-manager perspective is adopted for the study and a qualitative research design is used to investigate the fundamental issue of why the differing contextual environments of organisations should influence the informal networks that exist within organisations. A post-structuralist approach to an interpretive investigation, utilising qualitative interviews, facilitated the reporting of empirical research, and theory development. The Bourdieu platform allows for the exploration of contextual issues using the concepts of field, habitus, and capital. Analysis of both interviews and secondary data concludes that informal intraorganisational networks differ contextually depending upon the type of organisation/industry group in which they are located. Further, elements of field such as traditions, unwritten norms, symbols, and customs also differ contextually in different organisations. Likewise, elements of habitus such as personal perceptions, levels and standards of living, and pride in work differ contextually as do elements of capital such as qualifications, skills, and the value of reputation. By way of example and explanation regarding theoretical properties, a comparison of trades based and non-trades based organisations is undertaken in the interview analysis. The research concludes that context does matter in an investigation into informal intraorganisational networks. Furthermore, networks in trades based businesses are highly predictable, have predictable characteristics and function in a dependable manner. Conversely, networks in non-trades based businesses are less predictable, are based on the personal characteristics of the members, and behave in a less dependable manner. These properties are exposed using the Bourdieu platform. Therefore, in terms of theory development, the results of this study suggest that the Bourdieu notions of field, habitus, and capital provide a sound theoretical platform for investigating informal intraorganisational networks. This is in sharp contrast to the positivist paradigm dominating research in the field to date.

▼ This study aims to identify the distinguishing characteristics of successful international R&D collaboration among Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs). For this purpose, I used survey and interview data on Korean SMEs. First, investigating the overall patterns of international technology collaboration involving SMEs, I found that the most observed and desired type of collaboration was R&D collaboration among SMEs, but it produced the lowest level of satisfaction and thus needed further investigation. Consequently, I focused only on one particular type of collaboration, that is, "international R&D collaboration among SMEs". Then, I examined the main motivations behind such collaboration and motivation specific features of the collaboration in terms of collective strength, partner selection criteria, and project management practices. An attention was paid on the diversity of motivation, where resource based theory was adopted to develop a theoretical framework. I also analysed the benefits and costs of international R&D collaboration for SMEs compared to domestic R&D collaboration, where resource based theory with transaction cost theory were integrated. Finally, I suggested a framework to measure the performance of international R&D collaboration from the SME perspective. A logic model was adopted to identify feasible measures to assess the performance of R&D collaboration, from which the most significant measures for SMEs, considering that the collaboration is across firms in different nations, were investigated. This study represents one of the few attempts to explain the mechanisms through which how international R&D collaborations in SMEs are initiated, managed and produce benefits, and to suggest the conditions that can offer SMEs a greater value from international collaboration than domestic collaboration. Practically, the research findings are expected to help establish an R&D strategy at the firm level and will also provide valuable knowledge to develop innovation policies for SMEs at the national level.

▼ This thesis assesses the role of the Government (in Mexico) and the Foreign Trade Council of Mexico (BANCOMEXT) in the internationalization of Mexican small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in low- and medium-technology industries (LMT), which is the main group of firms serviced by BANCOMEXT-Europe. It also sheds light on the internal and external barriers this organization has identified as affecting the internationalization of these SMEs from developing countries (Mexico) in developed and distant markets (the European Union). To achieve this, a case study was undertaken in the six offices of BANCOMEXT (now PROMEXICO) in Europe: Italy, the UK, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and France. BANCOMEXT is the most specialized governmental organization dealing with the internationalization of SMEs. The story told by the BANCOMEXT officers is analysed from the international business (the Uppsala model and the role of government intermediaries in the internationalization of SMEs), innovation and policy perspectives (the national system of innovation (NSI) approach) and the economic perspective. After the inductive analysis of the interviews undertaken with government officers from BANCOMEXT-Europe, 220 concepts that span the policy, macro, micro and meso levels were identified. The findings suggest that BANCOMEXT-Europe has mainly contributed to the internationalization of LMT-SMEs by the provision of information and by putting these firms in contact with potential clients abroad, but there are some unattended areas in which BANCOMEXT-Europe could expand its activities to contribute to the internationalization of LMT-SMEs. This thesis also uncovered that the SMEs' performance and the scope of BANCOMEXT's activities have been negatively affected by problems of different origins. Some of them are internal to Mexican SMEs, and there are also external barriers of both domestic and foreign origin inhibiting the SMEs' internationalization and explaining their very limited participation in foreign markets. These problems are enhanced by the environmental differences (differences in institutional set-ups) between Mexico and the EU and the geographical distance. In addition, this research provides empirical evidence from a developing country (Mexico) about the pervasive consequences of the lack of governmental support and policies for the internationalization of LMT-SMEs. This research calls for more active participation from the Government and policy makers to contribute to long-term economic growth from the supply side by improving SMEs' competitiveness through interactive learning, knowledge access and knowledge creation, innovation (incremental innovation) and the provision of favourable conditions for the internationalization of LMT-SMEs. Accordingly, a series of suggestions aimed at improving the competitiveness and internationalization of Mexican LMT-SMEs in the EU is also presented.

▼ The research is focusing on small and mid-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the German Medical Technology (MedTech) industry and investigates the antecedents and the effects of organizational capabilities on their strategy regarding international ventures. Although there is various research in the field of strategy, internationalisation and SMEs, the impact of existing research in the specific field of German Medtech SMEs is relatively poor while theoretical and empirical findings obtained in another particular institutional context are not yet applicable in other countries or industries. As a consequence, a systematic review of the literature has been conducted. An initial conceptual model was developed, in which significant findings regards country, industry and firm-specific aspects could be identified. The philosophical stand of the researcher and his ontological view as a post-positivist allows both, a qualitative and a quantitative approach. By applying a mixed method approach a focus group discussion provided in depth-knowledge in order to sharpen the initial model. Antecedents, as well as the most important factors related to strategy, were emphasized and further important aspects that focus on capabilities were revealed. With these results, constructs and relationships were modeled and quantitative data from a survey with more than 60 German MedTech SMEs were collected and assessed. This approach led to the finding that factors such as ́market potential ́, ́physical capital ́, ́medical regulations ́ and ́product competitive-ness ́ have the highest influence on the firm ́s strategic approach. ́Organizational learning ́ and ́coordination mechanism ́ have particularly an impact on strategy development, whereas relationship capabilities mediating effect on the strategy-competitive advantage relationship. Firm size and firm ́s experience in international ventures influence a firm ́s internationalisation. The results will serve as a strategic input for SME’s in the German MedTech industry. This research provided a contribution to knowledge that is relevant from an academic as well as from an economic point of view. The findings should help academics, MedTech SMEs, and governmental institutions to understand the decisive factors for internationalisation and the importance to develop specific organizational capabilities in this context. This understanding contributes towards a sound development of German MedTech SMEs in their future internationalisation.

A pesquisa investiga as experiências artísticas inseridas no cotidiano urbano contemporâneo para compreender as perspectivas estéticas latentes nessas práticas, no que diz respeito à sua interferência nos processos de subjetivação hegemônicos promovidos pelas sociedades capitalistas. Foram analisadas as práticas de performances artísticas que fazem apropriação do espaço urbano e outras produções estéticas anônimas e relacionais, que se afastam das proposições usuais e mantêm atitudes que se fundamentam na necessidade de encontrar mecanismos de sobrevivência e de reconhecimento dentro das lógicas contemporâneas. As análises foram amparadas por três grupos de intervenções urbanas como eixo empírico da pesquisa: o primeiro trata das derivas no meio urbano com a utilização de uma moldura clássica como dispositivo disparador da performance. O segundo eixo traz as performances urbanas de sentido relacional propostas pelo coletivo paulista Garrafas Térmicas e por grupos similares, observando as variações e afinidades. Por fim, observamos as práticas artísticas dadas como inscrições poéticas arraigadas no senso comum enquanto experiências conhecidas e não pensadas. A sua contextualização teórica se fez pelo entendimento da arte contemporânea, da estética e da crítica da arte, primeiro por autores como Artur Danto, Anne Cauquelin, Hans Belting e Giorgio Argan. Em seguida, o contato com as ruas remeteu a pesquisa para autores que se utilizam da estética para abordar questões filosóficas, antropológicas e das ciências humanas, como Jacques Rancière, Levi-Strauss, Henry Lefebvre, Frederic Jameson, Máximo Canevachi e Richard Schechner. Esse percurso resumiu-se com a escolha de Michel de Certeau (2014), para a abordagem da produção estética no ambiente urbano, alinhado ao pensamento das táticas desviacionistas emergentes nas práticas cotidianas, e de Stuart Hall (2013), que norteou a reflexão sobre o campo cultural contemporâneo que envolve os sistemas de produção de ideologias implícitas nas produções de relações e de produtos engendradas pela globalização generalista do sistema capitalista. Este estudo também teve o intuito de lançar um olhar sobre o jogo de valores mercadológicos e agenciamentos institucionais que provocam a absorção dessas experiências, transformando-as em objetos estéticos. Verificamos, ainda, qual a relação dos museus e demais espaços e instituições das artes acerca dessa produção estética.

The research investigates the artistic experiences inserted in the urban everyday life in order to comprehend the dormant aesthetic perspectives in those practices concerning their interference in the processes of hegemonic subjectivation promoted by capitalistic societies. ▼ Although considered a popular and useful tool to support the creation of new enterprises and to develop existing businesses, the business model concept is used so widely and loosely that it may have no clear meaning in practice. A thorough literature review showed that the concept is often discussed theoretically and conceptually but there was a distinct lack of empirical studies of its conceptualisation and application. This research is intended to address this limitation in extant knowledge. The broad research aim was to explore the conceptualisation and application of the business model concept within three Swiss communities of academics, training and consultancy professionals and small business owner-managers. Subsidiary aims were to explore the concept's perceived limitations, and the ways that members of the three communities have further refined the concept in order to address to its shortcomings. To fulfil these aims, in-depth interviews were conducted with samples of 10 academics with expertise in business models, 13 business support professionals and 12 owner-managers of technology-based small businesses, all located in the German-speaking part of Switzerland. The research findings revealed a high level of diversity in the interpretation and application of the business model concept and in evaluations of its usefulness, both within and across the three samples. There were some interesting general differences between the samples. The academics reflected ideas from the literature while support professionals also offered new application perspectives, but only rarely applied the concept in their work with firms. Only a few SME owner-managers applied the concept in any way and some were unaware of it. The contributions include the finding that the business model concept is understood and applied differently across the three communities, a distinction being made between revenue and 'advanced' concept thinking, and the importance of time and emergence in the application of business model thinking. It is shown that SMEs are in a different business model development stage from start-ups and large firms, having different business model needs. The necessity of a framework assisting managers in the creation and diversification of revenue streams is proposed. As a final integrative contribution, the thesis concludes with a conceptual framework differentiating between the two main sub-units 'value proposition' and 'business architecture/logic' on the one side, and the two main purposes 'analysis/refinement' and 'creation' on the other side. This four-dimensional framework reduces complexity in application allows for making better-informed business model application decisions.

▼ L'étude du verre, entre Anse et Mâcon, dans le cadre d'un mémoire de master, avait mis en avant ses origines diverses et l’approvisionnement complexe des sites de consommation de la basse vallée de la Saône. Ces conclusions appelaient à élargir l'étude de ce mobilier à l'ensemble de la Gaule du Centre-Est. Carrefour de voies fluviales et terrestres de première importance, cette région apparaît comme un point névralgique et une plaque tournante des échanges et du commerce en Gaule. Située à la croisée de plusieurs zones productrices d'objets en verre, elle reçoit aussi bien les produits de l'aire méditerranéenne, par le Rhône, que ceux des provinces septentrionales, par la Saône, ou ceux de l'Italie du Nord, par les voies traversant les Alpes. Outre sa position extrêmement perméable aux importations, les recherches de ces dernières années ont permis de mettre au jour plusieurs ateliers de verriers, à Lyon, Aoste et Autun, attestant d'une production locale, bien implantée à partir du milieu du Ier s. de n. è. L'inventaire réalisé pour cette étude a révélé de nouveaux indices d'artisanat, à Clermont-Ferrand et Saint-Romain-de-Jalionas. Leur production est cependant totalement inconnue. La reprise du mobilier des ateliers d'Autun et de celui, tardif, de la rue des Colonnes, à Vienne, n'ayant pas permis de déterminer leur production, seule, celle des ateliers lyonnais fournit une base comparative. Mais, s'il existe des points communs entre les formes fabriquées par ces derniers et celles mises au jour sur les sites de la région alentour, des divergences importantes mènent à penser que la production d'un atelier n'était pas, a priori, totalement destinée au marché local. L'analyse du mobilier en verre révèle, au contraire, un approvisionnement complexe, composé de productions locales, ou supposées telles, et d'importations à moyenne (Italie du Nord, Narbonnaise, Côte atlantique, Nord de la France) ou longue distance (Orient, Rhénanie, Mer Noire). Ces origines diverses, non seulement se mêlent au sein des mêmes contextes, mais évoluent au cours du temps. Outre la production, la circulation et le commerce du verre, cette thèse a permis d’aborder les aspects fonctionnels et sociologiques que révèle son usage, soit au regard d’autres matériaux, comme la céramique ou le métal, soit au sein du mobilier en verre lui-même, à travers les catégories morpho-fonctionnelles qu’il adopte. La comparaison entre les matériaux s'est avérée souvent impossible en raison des écueils méthodologiques, dus soit aux contraintes archéologiques, soit à celles liés au matériau lui-même. A contrario, la répartition du mobilier en verre selon ses fonctions et son contexte a montré assez peu de variations, malgré la large gamme d'usage qu'il présente. Que l'on soit dans une riche domus, une villa ou un quartier artisanal aux habitats modestes, la vaisselle en verre est le plus souvent commune et dévolue principalement au service de table.
