▼ For consumers in Taiwan, the aim of the study is to understand the social perceptions and the acceptance of sex toys, the development context of sex toy industry as well as the impact on society. Moreover, this study intends to evaluate the current and future development of the sex product industry and to call for the government attention on this industry so as to protect the rights and interests of consumers. I have individual interviews and focus group discussions with sex toy consumers, manufactures, sale traders, scholars and graduate students of sexology. In the study, I get the following findings: First, sex toys have no longer been regarded as obscene products. Gradually, they have been accepted by society, sometimes, they could meet a wide range of sexual activities. Even they have been regarded as important implements of preventing venereal diseases and AIDS. Second, the consumption of sex toys is in a state of privacy and ambiguity. Consequently, there is a flourishing channel of network sales even if the physical layout of the store also has considerable privacy. Without rent fees, full-time labor costs, and product inventory, network sales have the advantage that consumers can see and tough the products and the products are guaranteed. In addition, consumers can get appropriate recommendation and guidance from the salespersons. Also, consumers can increase the safety of using sex toys. Third, complex laws of sex toys donât have comprehensive management. Law enforcement is not stabile and doesnât limit the qualification for sale traders. The organizations of the authorities which monitor sex toy industry are not united. Thus, the industry position of the sex toys is ambiguous. There are no guarantees for consumerâs benefits. Fourth, there are no clear associations doing self-restraint in the industry. Therefore, the government has the obligations to manage and counsel the industry of sex toys. Allow the storekeepers of sex toys to have a good business environment, so the consumers will be benefited from these measures. ▼ Lead poisoning has been a constant public health concern because children absorb more lead compared to adults. The resulting health effects are irreversible and include decreased cognitive functions development and death. Lead exposure to children is in various ways and one of the ways is use of toys contaminated with lead. The allowable international standards for Lead in plastic toys is 90 ppm and this study established levels ranged from 0.001 to 2,100 ppm. The study used an analytical cross-sectional design in which 108 toys were collected from 18 randomly selected stores in Lusaka City. The toys were subjected to X-ray Fluorescence using Nilton gun machine to determine lead concentration. Stata version 12.0 was used for statistical analysis. Bivariate regression was used to test for association between independent and dependent variables at P < 0.05. Toys with lead levels above the recommended international standard of 90 ppm constituted 18.5% (20) of the total sample while 81.5% (88) toys had lead concentration within the standard. The concentration of lead had a median of 0.001 ppm and (IQR 0.001 – 60.5 ppm). Toys for children above the age of 2 years had higher lead levels of 105 ppm compared to those for children below 2 years with levels of 9.75 ppm. Toys in the midrange cost category of 16 -25 ZMK had higher levels of 232.5 ppm compared to toys in the low and high cost category of 2-15 and 36-190 ZMK. Lead levels were high in multi coloured toys (102 ppm) compared to the mean for single colours Toys of animal shape had higher lead levels of 105.5 ppm compared to toys in the miscellaneous and repetitive shape categories which had 90 and 0.001 ppm respectively. However, the association between these factors (colour, type, cost, child age category of the toy) and the concentration of lead in the toys was not statistically significant with P > 0.05. This study established that 18.5% of the toys were above the acceptable limit of lead, with some toys having lead levels 23 times higher than the internationally acceptable standard of 90ppm. There is therefore urgent need for regulatory bodies (ZEMA and ZABS) to develop standards and policy on lead in toys to ensure protection of children from lead poisoning.

▼ This thesis provides a critique of the social and ideological processes that underpin the production, consumption and disposal of toys. In particular, it examines two high-profile cases involving toys containing lead and magnets. These cases are contextualized by a spate of global toy-related recalls between 2006 and 2008, peaking in 2007. The cases focus on four toy companies, one headquartered in Canada and three in the United States. This study examines the responses to unsafe toys, by toy companies in the west and their supply chain partners in China, through the lens of deviancy theory and critical criminology. The study found that there appears to be a scripted set of responses and strategies on the part of those doing the harm. This research is concerned with conceptualizing, observing and mapping global harms, in particular toxic harms, within the broad theoretical framework of ‘green criminology’, where a key precept is conceptualizations of harm that go beyond conventional legal definitions of crime. Informed by an environmental justice perspective, it asks which toxins affect which people, which places and whose natural landscapes and why? It engages with eco-global criminology’s concerns with the ecological (environmental toxins), the global (worldwide movement of toxic harms) and issues of justice (biological, social and ecological consequences of those trajectories for people, places and nature). The study examined the flow of toxic harms across geographical and jurisdictional borders through the concept of transference. Transference refers to the movement of something (e.g. substance, activity) from one place or person (entity) to another. The research located transference within the growing interconnection of markets and the expanding flow of goods where different supply chain activities are located in particular countries and where human and ecological harms are also transferred. Denial and the use of particular techniques of neutralization on the part of those who produced and perpetuated harm in the production, consumption and disposal of toxic toys was a major concern and finding of this thesis.

Numa época em que a tecnologia domina cada vez mais as nossas vidas e as questões ambientais ganham uma importância fulcral, é necessário questionarmos a qualidade dos objectos que a sociedade produz e consome. É através desta preocupação que surge o tema para a presente dissertação - embalagens sustentáveis para brinquedos - bem como da intenção de, como designer, em início de actividade profissional, ter um papel activo que permita contribuir para alterar esta situação. Pretende-se com esta investigação compreender qual a dimensão do problema de excesso de RSU (Resíduos Sólidos Urbanos), particularmente o que está relacionado com as embalagens de brinquedos, e tentar encontrar uma forma de contribuir para a resolução desse problema e para a consciencialização do comportamento irresponsável que se assiste por parte da sociedade. Sendo este um campo muito vasto, limita-se este trabalho à concepção de um protótipo de uma embalagem para brinquedos de crianças na faixa etária compreendida entre os quatro e os seis anos de idade. De forma a desenvolver este estudo é fundamental uma investigação teórica sobre o tema de forma a sustentar as ideias a serem aprofundadas. O protótipo da embalagem será desenvolvido em colaboração com a empresa portuguesa CLASSICTOYS, o que permitirá através de testes com um grupo de amostra, saber se o produto elaborado é realmente eficiente, tanto como embalagem como elemento transmissor de uma consciência ecológica.

At a time when technology increasingly dominates our lives and environmental issues are of crucial importance, it is necessary to question the quality of the products that the society generates and consumes. It is due to this concern that the theme for this thesis - sustainable packaging for toys - arises, as well as the intention, as a designer in the beginning of occupation to have an active role in order to contribute to change this situation. The objective of this research is to better understand the extent of the problem of excess urban solid waste, particularly which is related to the packaging of toys, and try to find a way of solving this problem and to raise awareness of the irresponsible behavior we are witnessing from our society. Since this is a vast field, the work is limited to the design of one prototype package of toys for children aged between four and six years old. In order to develop this study it is fundamental a theoretical research on the topic to support the ideas to be deepened. It is part of the objective to develop a prototype of a package in collaboration with the Portuguese company CLASSICTOYS, which allows the testing of one sample group, learning the efficiency of the product produced, as well as, the package as an element capable of sparking an ecological consciousness.

▼ Abstract The process of development occurs according to the pattern established by the genetic potential but is also influenced by environmental factors. These environments provide important possibilities for undertaking action (`affordances'), which are supplied from objects, events or places in the environment. Since young children spend the majority of their time at home, the affordances in the home environment are crucial for motor development. There has been minimal research examining the relationship between motor development and the affordances in the home environment. The presence of toys provides an important possibility for undertaking action. Siblings could also have an important influence in reaching motor milestones. However, the literature study showed no consensus about the influence of the presence of siblings and also the influence of the number of siblings on early motor development. Therefore the present study was designed tot investigate whether the two distinguished affordances ‘availability of toys’ and ‘presence of siblings’ can be seen as predictors in ages of achievement of the motor milestones sitting, independent standing and self locomotion by children from 9 up to 20 months of age. The influence of the amount of siblings was also examined. Regression analyses was used to investigate to what extent the ‘availability of toys’ and the ‘presence of siblings’ can predict the age of achievement of the distinguished motor milestones. The results of the regression analyses showed that the ‘availability of toys’ and the ‘presence of siblings’ can not be seen as precursors of the age on which the motor milestones are reached. Follow-up studies are necessary to further clarify to what extent the factors ‘presence of siblings’ and the ‘availability of toys'’ predict the age on which the motor milestones are reached. Samenvatting De ontwikkeling van kinderen is enerzijds toe te schrijven aan genetische factoren, anderzijds hebben omgevingsfactoren een belangrijke invloed op de ontwikkeling. Deze omgeving biedt een kind belangrijke mogelijkheden tot het ondernemen van actie (‘affordances’), welke vanuit objecten, gebeurtenissen of plaatsen uit deze omgeving worden verstrekt. Aangezien jonge kinderen het merendeel van hun tijd in de thuisomgeving doorbrengen, vormt de thuisomgeving de belangrijkste plaats waar kinderen motorische ervaringen opdoen. Er is beperkt onderzoek gedaan naar de relatie tussen de motorische ontwikkeling en de mogelijkheden die vanuit de omgeving worden verstrekt om actie te ondernemen (‘affordances’). De aanwezigheid van speelgoed is op jonge leeftijd een belangrijke mogelijkheid om actie te ondernemen. Daarnaast zouden brusjes ook een rol kunnen spelen in het bereiken van diverse motorische mijlpalen. ▼ In this study toys were used as educative curriculum material in an intervention on the topic of energy aimed at Intermediate Phase pre-service science teachers (n= 87) registered for a BEd degree at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, South Africa. The intervention consisted of, amongst other elements, lectures, assignments and toy workshops, with the latter being a key driver in the process. The choice of toys as the educative curriculum material was informed by the fact that there is a huge variety of simple, reasonably priced and easily procured toys that are suitable to demonstrate the concept of energy from both theoretical and practical perspectives. The conclusions that can be drawn from the study are that the use of toys in the preparation of pre-service primary school teachers has the potential to substantially improve their subject content knowledge (SCK), pedagogical content knowledge (PCK), and their confidence related to these two constructs with respect to their understandings of energy. The data generated also suggest that when appropriate educative curriculum materials are integrated into a topic in science-teacher education, there may be a substantial positive impact on pre-service teachers‘ confidence in both their understanding of the science content and their perceptions of their ability to teach this content. An additional finding of the study was that, despite its popularity, status and usefulness over many years, the Science Teacher Efficacy Belief Instrument (STEBI-B) shows low sensitivity to measuring changes in efficacy as a consequence of the so-called ‗ceiling effect‘. The ceiling effect is a result of initial high scores which provide little opportunity to show iii substantial positive change as a result of an appropriate intervention that is designed to improve efficacy. While this study did not directly address this lacuna in STEBI-B, it made use of an innovative descriptive statistic, ‗percentage gain of potential‘, in an attempt to describe and interpret even small changes in efficacy as measured by STEBI-B.

▼ Abstract: This study aims to investigate the relations that children establish between television and their way of playing, inserted in a contemporary, technological society. The participants of this research are children in age between nine to seven years old, students from a private school of Uberlandia-MG. An ethnographic methodology has been used by mean of data registration related to the ways of playing in the scholar space and the appropriation of the television universe realized by these children, when this is expressed in their playful activities. We have used the participant observation, diary of field, photographs, films, informal conversations and semistructured interviews recorded by a digital recorder. This enabled us to understand that games/plays are transformed with time, where concepts and definitions overlap themselves, in accordance to the scientific and technological advance, determined by social mutations. Mutations, these, inserted in a wider context, in the society history, of which urbanization, increase of the population and mechanization of the cities are part - what dehumanizes the urban space. It has drawn our attention, the difference of gender at the play. Boys and girls have different themes, determined by culture; however, both create values and (re) create infant cultures. Also, the plays change their representation, in its majority, but preserve their essence, as in the results of this study, where the television lends itself in feeding the plays. By the other side, not all content aired on television is incorporated to the playful practices. So, it is indispensable that the television universe is connected to the structure of plays, which are less changed than the representations and their contextualization. Esta dissertação investiga a intricada trama de relações que se tece entre os brinquedos e a cultura, apresentando algumas transformações sócio-culturais que ocorreram desde a sociedade medieval até a sociedade pós-moderna, evidenciando como os traços culturais de cada época, de cada contexto sócio-histórico acabam por revelar-se nos brinquedos. Partimos de Johan Huizinga, que articula o conceito de lúdico ao de cultura, tomando o jogo como a própria essência de outras manifestações culturais. Passamos por Walter Benjamin e Philippe Ariès que apontam elementos da história dos brinquedos, fazendo uma análise da relação entre os brinquedos, a própria infância e o contexto sóciohistórico vigente. Objetos da cultura, os brinquedos capturam e transmitem valores, ideologias, idéias e expectativas do campo social para a infância. Enquanto brinca, a criança apropria-se dessas significações e representações, mas também as modifica. O brincar apresenta-se como ferramenta fundamental através da qual é possível o enlace entre a criança e seu mundo.Nesse encontro entre um objeto da cultura - os brinquedos, e a constituição do sujeito, abordada pelo viés do brincar na infância, vislumbramos a possibilidade de abrir um diálogo fértil, entre a psicanálise e a semiótica. A partir das contribuições da Semiótica da Cultura de Iuri Lotman, consideramos os brinquedos como texto complexo, num sistema semiótico mais amplo, denominado pelo autor de semiosfera. O brincar, ferramenta fundamental para a apropriação que a criança faz de elementos simbólicos da cultura, foi abordado por meio do embasamento conceitual psicanalítico em Sigmund Freud, D.W.Winnicott e Jacques Lacan. Nossos aportes ao campo psicanalítico, visaram, porém, ao que se chamou a psicanálise em extensão, ou seja, uma transposição do campo da clínica psicanalítica, para uma análise das formações culturais, numa operação mais próxima à crítica social. Aprofundamos nossos objetivos, investigando, por fim, a relação entre alguns paradigmas e formações sócio-culturais da pós-modernidade e certas formas em que se apresentam os brinquedos e as brincadeiras no universo contemporâneo. Através da análise de processos semióticos dos brinquedos e da metodologia psicanalítica, propusemos uma leitura e interpretação das posições do sujeito, no caso as crianças, e do laço social, diante dessas novas significações e transformações sociais e culturais. Numa intersecção entre a filosofia e a psicanálise, apoiamo-nos no conceito de multiculturalismo de Slavoj Zizek, em Vladimir Safatle, que analisa a passagem da sociedade moderna da produção para a sociedade pós-moderna do consumo e em Renata Salecl que aponta as novas formas do Outro nesse momento triunfante do capitalismo tardio

The purpose of this study is to increase knowledge about how gender patterns reflects served in boys and girls free play at preschool. Concepts that are central for this study is elucidated through theoretical starting points. Observations as a method have been the basis for this study, where a number of boys and girls in the age of 4-5 years old have been observed during the free play both indoors and outdoors. This survey method was used to answer the following questions; Which toys do boys and girls use in the free play at preschool? How do boys and girls use these toys in the free play? The study results illustrate that there are both similarities and differences in how boys and girls using toys. According to the results, it appears that girls and boys play more often with toys that are gender-neutral outdoors than indoors and that the traditional gender pattern is not as obvious in the outdoors environment. The expectations that is placed on boys and girls have through previous research and the results of this study proved to be important for children’s play.

Syftet med denna studie är att skapa ökad kunskap om hur könsmönster återspeglas i pojkars och flickors användande av leksaker i den fria leken på förskolan. Med den sociokulturella teorin och queerteorin som utgångspunkt kommer olika begrepp som är centrala för denna studie belysas. Observationer har legat till grund för denna studie, där ett antal pojkar och flickor i åldern 4-5 år har observerats under den fria leken både inomhus och utomhus. Denna undersökningsmetod har använts för att besvara följande frågeställningar; Vilka leksaker använder pojkar och flickor i den fria leken? Hur används dessa leksaker i den fria leken? Studiens resultat belyser att det finns både skillnader och likheter i pojkar och flickors användande av leksaker. Resultatet visar att pojkar och flickor oftare leker med könsneutrala leksaker utomhus än inomhus och att det traditionella könsmönstret inte framträder lika tydligt utomhus som inomhus. De förväntningar som ställs på pojkar och flickor har både genom tidigare forskning och studiens resultat visat sig ha stor betydelse för barns lek.

▼ Children are constantly exposed to many chemicals via the products they come in contactwith in their everyday life. One chemical group is phthalates, the most commonly usedplasticisers in the world. Phthalates are used mainly in PVC plastic products like floors, toys,food containers and wallpaper but they are also used in rubber, glue, paint, cables etc. Sincethese chemicals are weakly chemically bound to the PVC they can leak and migrate to the air,food, water and skin. Children are exposed to phthalates mainly through food, but because ofthe hand to mouth behaviour they are also exposed via dust inhalation and dust ingestion.About ten years ago regulations of the most toxic phthalates in toys and child care productswere implemented in the EU and from February 2015 it is a general prohibition for the use ofDEHP (diethylhexyl phthalate), DnBP (di-n-butyl phthalate), DiBP (diisobutyl phthalate) andBBzP (butyl benzyl phthalate). DiNP (diisononyl phthalate) is a relatively new phthalate andit has replaced DEHP to some extent in floors and toys. In phthalate free products DINCH(1,2-cyclohexane dicarboxylic acid diisononyl ester) is one of the plasticizer replacingphthalates. The banned phthalates have been shown to cause adverse effects on reproductionand recent research also investigates links between phthalate exposure and asthma and allergysymptoms in children. More experimental animal studies are needed to further investigate theasthma and allergy correlation. In the present project dust samples were collected from 30 preschool indoor environments inthe Stockholm city area to evaluate the levels of the six substances mentioned and thephthalate DEP (diethyl phthalate). The main aim of this thesis project was to search forrelations and links between the phthalate concentrations in dust and parameters from theindoor environment in preschools. Studied parameters are e.g. construction year, floor type,cleaning routines and quantity of toys and furniture made of plastic or foam. The project wascommissioned by the Swedish EPA and performed at the Institute of Environmental Medicine(IMM) at Karolinska Institutet. A negative relation was found between dust phthalate (DEHP and DnBP) concentrationand construction year. Also rooms with old PVC floors had higher concentrations of DEHPand DnBP in dust than rooms with new PVC floors. There was also a trend that dust frompreschools with PVC floors had higher DiNP concentration than dust from preschools withother floor types. The preschools that used foam mattresses for resting had higher DiNPconcentrations than those with no foam mattresses. Most preschools had new foammattresses, which could indicate a more common use of DiNP in new mattresses or mattress2covers compared to old mattresses that contains more DEHP. The four Waldorf preschoolsthat participated had lower DiNP dust concentrations than the other preschools, which wasexpected since Waldorf orientation includes using as little plastic material as possible.
